Anaconda had the grace to be campily bad; Python, a flagrant rip-off, just sucks. A military transport carrying a whopper of a snake crashes somewhere in the mountains near a sweet little town, where two brothers live. One of them is an avid cyclist who's come back after his father's death to help his brother with the family business--a metal-engraving company that, for some reason, has enormous vats of acid. The snake starts eating people; when their semidigested remains are found, suspicion falls on the cyclist, because only he would have access to the acid necessary to burn the victims to the bone in this disgusting manner. (It's a particularly tacky detail that a lesbian couple are the first victims of the enormous, phallic snake.) Anyhow, some special unit of the government comes in, including our supposed stars Casper Van Dien (with a cheesy mustache and a cheesier accent) and Robert Englund (of Nightmare on Elm Street fame). In various incomprehensible action sequences, they prove to be incompetent, and it's only our stalwart bicyclist and a sturdy young deputy who save the day. Python is terribly written, terribly acted, and terribly directed and features mediocre special effects (the snake is never the same size from scene to scene). Jenny McCarthy has a cameo, for those who care about such things. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Scientist Dr. Anton Rudolph (Englund) has engineered the perfect killing machine - the world's first massive, genetically enhanced python. Mistakenly unleashed in a small American town, this unstoppable creature with a voracious appetite is raging out of control. As the massive python gobbles up the locals one by one, it's up to Special Agent Parker (Van Dien) to conquer nature's ulitmate terror. If you enjoyed movies like Lake Placid and Anaconda, you'll eat up PYTHON.

Could this be the funniest movie ever made? By any rational measure of comedy, this medieval romp from the Monty Python troupe certainly belongs on the short list of candidates. According to Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, it's "recommended for fans only," but we say hogwash to that--you could be a complete newcomer to the Python phenomenon and still find this send-up of the Arthurian legend to be wet-your-pants hilarious. It's basically a series of sketches woven together as King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman as the King, Terry Gilliam as his simpleton sidekick Patsy, and the rest of the Python gang filling out a variety of outrageous roles. The comedy highlights are too numerous to mention, but once you've seen Arthur's outrageously bloody encounter with the ominous Black Knight (John Cleese), you'll know that nothing's sacred in the Python school of comedy. From holy hand grenades to killer bunnies to the absurdity of the three-headed knights who say "Ni--!," this is the kind of movie that will strike you as fantastically funny or just plain silly, but why stop there? It's all over the map, and the pace lags a bit here and there, but for every throwaway gag the Pythons have invented, there's a bit of subtle business or grand-scale insanity that's utterly inspired. The sum of this madness is a movie that's beloved by anyone with a pulse and an irreverent sense of humor. If this movie doesn't make you laugh, you're almost certainly dead. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Only Funny When Your High.......2007-06-28

I've seen this movie 4 times now and ever since the first time I sit there wondering "What the heck do people think is funny in this movie" - Than I realized that if I had been high when I watched it this movie probably would have been hilarious! That's actually a good thing because than I could have some killer food and laugh at this stuff even though usually I'd just turn it off lol

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-06-26

What is there to say about this, except that this is a classic. Great extra stuff with the DVD and as usual a comical movie from beginning to end. What you would expect form Monty Python.

5 out of 5 stars Silly, Clever.......2007-06-20

It's easy to dismiss this movie and everything done by the Monty Python troupe as silly, throw-away. But you would be doing yourself a huge disservice. There's an underlying deep understanding of the very legends and events the boys are making such merry fun of.

This 'special edition' was not worth it if you look at it from the point of view of the extra scene - it truly is throw-away. However, the extras range from interesting (how the castle was used in various and sundry scenes) to funny (how to get your own coconuts and run like a silly person around the castle grounds).

As I said, merry fun. Hilarious... don't miss this movie!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, the funniest movie of all time.... totally worth buying.......2007-06-19

This movie is HILARIOUS!!!! No, not the cute kind like in Ella Enchanted, nor the crude kind used with cursing and bad language. It's the kind that has you laughing at every scene and 35 years later repeating lines word for word like "Bring out your dead!" or "I'm not quite dead yet. I'm getting better!" and my favorite, most popular line.." What is the air-height velocity of an unladen swallow?"

The movie is set in the middle ages, starting with King Arthur looking for more knights to sit with him at his round table.

The movie makers came up with everything, from a "Trojan Rabbit" to The bridge of Death to a vicious little bunny, the guardian of the Holy Grail.

The only part I didn't like was "Sir Gallahad's Adventure", which is not very long. not long at all.

Me and my friends liked it This movie so much that we actually wrote a play, acted it out, and filmed it. We wanted to call it Monty Python and the Holy Hand grenade, since we stole most of our ideas from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but we decided it wasn't very original. We called our play The good, the Bad, and the Doofas. sorry, hopping down a bunny trail there. Moving on.

Anywaaaay, This movie is down- right hilarious, adventuresome, and has something fun in it every 5 minutes.

and, no, there are no sad, weepy, slow background scenes where the main character is sitting alone, crying his heart out. no romance scenes either HOORAY!!

5 out of 5 stars Bring out your dead!.......2007-05-31

Where can I start with is classic? It has all of the famous Monty Python skits (missing is the parrot skit) and is still hilarious -- viewing after viewing. The material, after all of these years, is still fresh. My fourteen year old niece recently saw the movie for the first time and it has become one of her favorites. Buy this movie or...I'll turn you into a newt!

New for 2005, The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus 16-Ton Megaset packs together the original 14-DVD megaset with the two-disc Monty Python Live in space-saving Thinpaks. While more cautious fans may want to pick and choose among the previously released individual volumes of Monty Python for their collection, true Pythonites will want to own this definitive megaset that contains all 45 episodes (in chronological order) of Monty Python's Flying Circus. This "persistently silly" collection encompasses three-and-a-half seasons of dead parrots, cross-dressing lumberjacks, loonies, upper class twits, and spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, and spam. Click past the occasional clunker and go directly to such signature sketches as the Ministry of Silly Walks, the Spanish Inquisition, the Fish-Slapping Dance, the Dead Parrot Sketch, the Lumberjack Song, the Cheese Shop, the Argument Clinic, and Nudge, Nudge. Taken as a whole, one marvels at how Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam thoroughly subverted television convention with "something completely different," like sketches with no punch lines ("Your average TV viewer isn't going to understand this"). A warning to the uninitiated: there is much "material that some may find offensive, but which is really smashing." Violations of something called the "Strange Sketch Act" are the least of the troupe's offenses, as witness the Oscar Wilde Sketch, the Dirty Vicar Sketch, and the Most Awful Family in Britain Sketch, all of which achieve "the really gross awfulness" all Python fans are looking for. Say no more.

Monty Python TV shows, movies, records, and books are a time capsule of their anarchic lunacy. But more precious is an audience with Python, and as close as we can get is Live at the Hollywood Bowl, the long-sought-after 1982 concert film in which the Fab Six perform their greatest hits before a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Robert Klein moderates Live at Aspen, the irreverent 1998 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival tribute that reunited John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, and Terry Jones onstage for the first time in 18 years on the occasion of the troupe's 30th anniversary. Highlights include a shockingly funny moment involving Graham Chapman's ashes, and a joyous "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" sing-along. Less essential is 1989's clip show Parrot Sketch Not Included: 20 Years of Python, which also does not include "The Oscar Wilde Sketch," "Cheese Shop," "Nudge-Nudge," and many other signature sketches. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Truly something completely different!!.......2007-07-01

In 1974 thanks to public television I was introduced to the sheer lunacy of Monty Python. Thanks to A and E, I can enjoy the sketches that I enjoyed way back when any time I want to! This is a collection that is a must for all Python fans! The humor is still fresh to this very day. No one can equal the talents of Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. Simply the best when it comes to British comedy!!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money for a Python fan.......2007-07-01

An essential for a Monty Python fan! No more do you have to search the TV guide in hopes that an episode will be played at a reasonable hour. No more do you have to rewatch recorded episodes that you've seen too many times (okay maybe that was just me). No, really, I have very much enjoyed this product, plus the two bonus CDs at the end. May I suggest in addition to the complete set that you buy the books The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus; All the Words Volume One andThe Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus : All the Words, Volume 2; they are very useful as a detailed index (and pretty cheap if you buy them from the Used and New section of Amazon). I will enjoy this set for many years to come, and I have absolutely no regrets that I spent the money on it!

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus 16 Ton Megaset.......2007-05-23

Now here is a problem, how do you review the work of comedy gods? I'm not even going to go there, to even start would be blasphemous. For years I have wanted a complete copy of all the series of Flying Circus yet in the U.K. this has still not been released. Only now are the series being released here on dvd and only each individual series. So for the same amount of money as collecting all 4 series of Flying Circus you can get this boxset which also gives you 2 extra discs of live shows, the German Episode, plus bonus features, making this collected edition much more value for money (but only if you have a multi-regional dvd player).

This boxset is fantastic, it took me an entire week to watch all 16 dvds! But there are a few things that let the boxset down. The "Meet the Chaps" feature gets repetitive as it's the same information on each of the episode discs. The "Upper-class twit of the Year" and "Gumby" quizzes are a good feature but slightly repetative. I loved the Gillianimations Art Gallery, to see the images Terry Gilliam used for the animated sequences is great. The interactive menus are good but a bit more variety could have been added to the main menus to make them more entertaining. But to be honest none of that matters to an ardent Monty Python fan, they would just click through the menu until they get to their beloved Flying Circus, whether it would be a full episode or just their favourite sketch.

My biggest and major gripe about this boxset (and this is the only reason why I have rated this 4 stars instead of 5) is that under the shear weight of all 16 dvd discs that the spine of the boxset has a tendancy to rip at the bottom and at the top, if the spine, bottom and top were reinforced it could take the weight of all those discs. Or if was to be re-released I would suggest that it would more amusing to have it repackaged in the shape of a 16 Ton weight.

5 out of 5 stars The (almost) Complete, Original and Genuine........2007-05-20

In the autumn of 1969 I was a thirteen year old schoolboy when Python appeared: it was love at first sight and over the years I grew to appreciate the subtelties even more. I bought the 'Best of...' DVDs from the BBC and enjoyed them, but something was missing and it wasn't just Australian tennis stars' investigation into the intelligence of penguins!
Now that I have the complete series in original sequence I can see that the shows were planned as complete self contained entities. I recommend all my fellow 'Brits' to buy this... it isn't much more than the exerpts and you get one (but not both of the german) shows.
I'm off for a lemon curry... enjoy!

Perhaps only the collective brilliant minds of the Monty Python film and television troupe are up to the task of tackling a subject as weighty as the Meaning of Life. Sure, Kierkegaard, Wittgenstein, and their ilk have tried their hands at this puzzler, but only Python has attempted to do so within the commercial motion picture medium. Happily for us all, Monty Python's the Meaning of Life truly explains everything one conceivably needs to know about the perplexities of human existence, from the mysteries of Catholic doctrine to the miracle of reproduction to why one should avoid the salmon mousse to the critical importance of the machine that goes ping! Using fish as a linking device (and what marvelous links those aquatic creatures make), The Meaning of Life is presented as a series of sketches: a musical production number about why seed is sacred; a look at dining in the afterlife; the quest for a missing fish (there they are again); a visit from Mr. Death; the cautionary tale of Mr. Creosote and his rather gluttonous appetite; an unflinching examination of the harsh realities of organ donation, and so on. Sadly, this was the last original Python film, but it's a beaut. You'll laugh. You'll cry (probably because you're laughing so hard). You may even learn something about the Meaning of Life. Or at least about how fish fit into the grand scheme of things. --Jim Emerson

1 out of 5 stars Someone please take it out of my hands!.......2007-06-05

I grew up watching "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," so when I saw this VHS for sale at the low cost of $1 I thought I was in for a treat. Unfortunately it was awful. I know their reputation is built on pushing the limits and nothing is too sacred, but this was disgusting and stupid. I have to be honest in admitting there were a couple of funny parts (when the Yorkshire father says he will sell his children for scientific experiments) but it was not worth the $1 I paid for it and I want it out of my house before my kids find it!

4 out of 5 stars Typical Monty Python Hilarious Satire.......2007-05-23

It is Monty Python how can you go wrong if you like humor.

4 out of 5 stars British for sure but aging fast.......2007-04-26

Monty Python has a tendency to use, reuse and even overuse some tricks when he has invented them. Here he will definitely overuse and abuse the after-dinner mint. And yet, even if I have never thought Monty Python to be the genius of the second half of the 20th century some think he is, the film has some marvelous scenes that are worth the watching, for example the attack of the old City of London clerks against the super-tyrannical City of New York Stock Exchange, generally known as Wall Street. It becomes a pirate tale and it is funny, even as a satire of the excessive power of the financial market in and on our ordinary lives. A new slavery? Probably. The restaurant scene is overdone unluckily and the vomiting is by far too much to be just funny. It is disgusting, gross, funnily gross for sure but not in any way, at least for me, hilariously gross or funny. And we all know in a way or another this famous after-dinner mint that has been used or hinted at in so many occasions. It is a classic and like all classic it loses its edge, it becomes a little bit blunt or dull.

3 out of 5 stars Eric Idle and John Cleese present.......2007-04-01

To me, this is not a Monty Python movie. The humour might be intact, but its not really a Python movie. I've watched the series and seen The Quest for the Holy Grail, this is not Python. Where was Graham Chapman? I dont know the history behind the troupe, but where the hell is Chapman? He is usually in every sketch and he was absent for most of the movie. I saw Cleese and Idle alot, but not enough Chapman. The movie just seemed to be a attempt to make Python look cool by swearing and adding nudity. Didnt really work for me. All and all, the worst Python ive seen yet.

5 out of 5 stars Monty Python and the Holy Grail.......2007-07-04

Perhaps one of the greatest film comedies of all time (certainly for Pythonites), this zany cult classic by the famed Monty Python troupe will leave you gasping for breath and occasionally howling at the hilarious bad taste of certain slapstick sequences. Cleese, Chapman, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Gilliam, and Jones all play multiple roles, combining non-sequitur humor with bloody duels and other pratfalls that parody medieval chivalry and archaic religious sentiment. Somehow, senselessly silly gags like the encounter with a killer rabbit and the Knights Who Say "Ni!" tickle the funny bone no matter how many times you watch. For brilliant, irreverent lunacy, seek the "Holy Grail."

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Gail.......2007-05-19

A film one can watch over and over. Obsurd yet hilarious. Classic Python at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Grail ++.......2007-01-12

Well, Monty Python's Holy Grail is a gem in and of itself, but this edition has quite a bit of added pleasures (as you probably could surmise from the title). It has an intro that I hadn't seen before - I thought I'd stuck in the wrong video, which I quickly discovered was its intent. There were added scenes in the movie, which I enjoyed.

All around, it's a must for those who adore these guys as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars *****************************They only gave me FIVE stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-31

This is the funniest film of all time. Period. End of discussion. The End. . . oh, alright!! NOT the end! "How could they possibly make it better?", you ask. I answer: 5.1 Surround Sound. AND!!!!: a hilarious - new - beginning to the beginning of the credits of the movie of the film! What more can possibly be written about the sheer genius of this landmark cinematic milestone??? HELL, I don't know!! What I do know is that every time a New, Improved, Deluxe, Magnificent, Refined, Extended, EXTRAORDINARILY UNIQUELY updated version of this movie is released, I WILL be first in line to purchase it. So there!!. . . Oh, and the new HD film transfer is very nice, very nice indeed.

Description

Those six pandemonium-mad Pythons are back with their craziest adventure ever! John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin have returned to explain The Meaning of Life. These naughty Brits offer the usual tasteful sketches involving favorite body parts and bodily functions, the wonders of war, the miracle of birth and a special preview of what's waiting for us in Heaven. Nothing is too sacred for the probing Python crew. You'll never look at life in quite the same way again. Time pronounces it "an exhilarating experience!" Newsweek agrees, calling it, "the best movie from England's satirical sextet." Winner of the 1983 Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Award.

3 out of 5 stars Monty Python's: The Meaning of Life (HD DVD) Review by Justin Sluss.......2007-06-21

The Movie Itself is in my own personal opinion the best of the films by the British comedy troupe Monty Python which included (the late) Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Michael Palin. The group made a total of four motion pictures aside from their widely popular television sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus. This was the last of those films and was released in 1983. The whole plot to this movie as you guessed even if you're not a Python fan is obviously about The Meaning of Life. And it's pieced down into 8 stages with a little bit of fun thrown in before, during and after. The film has a lot of musical numbers that are absolutely hilarious and extremely catchy to boot (refer to my audio quality review for song titles).

If you're a fan of British sketch comedy or even Canadian sketch like The Kids in the Hall you're going to love this if you've never seen it before. This is sketch comedy at it's finest in the form of a film. The film was directed by Terry Jones who was a member of the comedy troupe and obviously acted quiet a bit in this as well as bossed everyone around. It's obvious that some people will clearly argue the best Python film would be "The Quest for the Holy Grail" or "Life of Brian." They are all great films by me and I look forward to the three others eventually making their way to High Definition disc release. This is encouraging to see one being released you have to admit either way.

Video Quality on this release is presented in 1080p VC-1 encoded on a 30gb disc. First off, yes this is an improvement over the DVD version(s) of this film available in the past but at the same time it's not really the best video transfer to High Def. Don't get me wrong, I mean yes this film is from 1983 for starters and has it's obvious original film grain to it and that's cool in it's own way. The thing I'm really trying to say is that don't expect it to look amazing. Just instead expect it to look better than before. There are some artifacts and pixilatation problems in rare occasions but nothing really to complain about that much.

Audio Quality on this release is in Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. This is only a small improvement over Dolby Digital 5.1 on the latest DVD release of this film. As Python Eric Idle says in one of the bonus materials "the film is a disguised musical" so the songs of this film are really important to the sound mix. I mean after all who can forget such classics as "Isn't it awfully nice to have a penis?", "Every Sperm is Sacred", "Galaxy Song", "Christmas in Heaven" and of course the opening track "It's the Meaning of Life."

Bonus Materials are primarily all in 16:9 (Widescreen) standard definition and ported over from the latest DVD release of the film. There's loads of material here, first off an introduction from Eric Idle before the film, audio Commentary by both Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. There's also another audio commentary track called "Soundtrack for the Lonely" which is sure to keep you company if "Terry and Terry" don't.

"Snipped Bits" (18 minutes) is basically deleted scenes with occasional commentary introductions or comment from Terry Jones. There's some laughs here but you see why some scenes were obviously deleted. "The Meaning of Making The Meaning of Life" (49 minutes) is your obvious "making of" documentary featuring interviews with the entire Monty Python... cast (even clips of the late Graham Chapman). Eric Idle says "... the film is a disguised musical." in this and we also learn that John Cleese isn't too fond of this film. He argues "Life of Brian" is the better of the Python films. Some would argue "Holy Grail" is but that's to be debated elsewhere, not in my review of bonus materials. "Education Tips" (6 minutes) is a series of skits done by John Cleese, Eric Idle and Michael Palin. I like Cleese's last character "Dr. Ken Enron Chaney." He cracks me up with just his name alone but there's some really hilarious stuff here overall. Including Michael Palin as the world's worst voice over narrator. It's ironic because he actually does voice over narration now on a nature television show.

"Un Film De John Cleese" (1 minute) is absolutely hilarious. It's nothing more than his edit of the film with only him in it. "Written, produced, directed, conceived, edited and probably projected by John Cleese." To only be a minute long it's definitely worth the minute for a good laugh. "Remastering A Masterpiece" is a spoof restoration documentary narrated by Michael Palin. It offers some goofy interviews with Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam as they try to restore the film by washing it. Gilliam and Jones both seem to have no luck as Jones resorts to a local British laundromat washing machine. Eventually Terry Gilliam gives up and says "I hate this film!" I guess this explains the video quality rating I gave this HD DVD doesn't it? Just kidding. There's a bit more material to be found but they really don't prove to be worth watching to even the most die-hard fan like myself. This is about where it stops for the bonus materials worth watching on this release. Nothing too bad but it is nothing more than the bonus materials from the DVD release ported over.

5 out of 5 stars Great film, not that necessary on HD-DVD..........2007-06-18

Although this is probably the most inconsistent film that Monty Python made, it's still fantastic. It ends up being a series of sketches loosely tied together around the meaning of life. Some are the absolute highlights of the Monty Python canon (e.g. the sex education scene and the disgusting Mr. Creosote), while others are much less successful. This was essentially the last material made by the Python troupe.

This HD-DVD release contains the exact same features as the recent 2-disc DVD special edition. The extra features are superb with a hilarious and insightful commentary by director Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, who aren't afraid to admit its faults. The trouble with this release is that the film is now over 20 years old and was shot with a relatively low budget so it doesn't look that good to start with. So by getting the HD-DVD you're just seeing the graininess and clunky special effects more clearly. If you already have the DVD there's really no need to get this, but if you're looking to buy it for the first time and you have an HD-DVD player then it's a no-brainer...

...and yes, the meaning of life is revealed in this movie!

"Blessed are the cheesemakers," a wise man once said. Or maybe not. But the point is Monty Python's Life of Brian is a religious satire that does not target specific religions or religious leaders (like, say, Jesus of Nazareth). Instead, it pokes fun at the mindless and fanatical among their followers--it's an attack on religious zealotry and hypocrisy--things that that fellow from Nazareth didn't particularly care for either. Nevertheless, at the time of its release in 1979, those who hadn't seen it considered it to be quite "controversial." Life of Brian, you see, is about a chap named Brian (Graham Chapman) born December 25 in a hovel not far from a soon-to-be-famous Bethlehem manger. Brian is mistaken for the messiah and therefore manipulated, abused, and exploited by various religious and political factions. And it's really, really funny. Particularly memorable bits include the brassy Shirley Bassey/James Bond-like title song; the bitter rivalry between the anti-Roman resistance groups, the Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea; Michael Palin's turn as a lisping, risible Pontius Pilate; Brian urging a throng of false-idol worshippers to think for themselves--to which they reply en masse "Yes, we must think for ourselves!"; the fact that everything Brian does, including losing his sandal in an attempt to flee these wackos, is interpreted as "a sign." Life of Brian is not only one of Monty Python's funniest achievements, it's also the group's sharpest and smartest sustained satire. Blessed are the Pythons. --Jim Emerson

Description

After slaying the Arthurian legend in their now classic Holy Grail, the Pythons set their sights on the Greatest Story Ever Told. Blind faith, virgin birth, crucifixion-nothing is sacred in this epic send-up of ancient times, which draws on the cornball biblical blockbusters of the 1950s to lampoon celebrity culture in any era. Criterion has gathered the guilty parties-including John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin-for two commentary tracks as provocative and hilarious as the film itself. Available for the first time in a 16:9 enhanced transfer, Monty Python's Life of Brian can finally be viewed in all its - ahem - glory.

5 out of 5 stars Monty Python is always a pleasure to watch........2007-05-26

The cast of The Life of Brian seemed to have as much fune making the movie as I did watching it. There is always a touch of the sacreligious in th e work of the Monty Python team and the Life of Brian can strik some people harshly. But as in most of their works the tewam seems to be having fun with a story that could have been.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, funny, funny.......2007-05-24

A slight bit of deep tongue-in-cheek stupid slap stick humor, but, hey, that's what these guys are all about. Laugh a little, laugh a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Monty Python.......2007-05-07

at their best. a Laugh out Loud movie. Irreverent, yet pleasing.

4 out of 5 stars First Try At Python....What Took Me So Long?.......2007-04-23

On a friend's strong recommendation, I just got done viewing the Life of Brian. I am glad I did. He had raved about how funny the movie is, so I finally relented and gave it a try. There are many laugh out loud moments in this film. Very witty and smart dialogue, and satirical looks at the way people donduct themselves when in a large group of people. From Brian's "mom" to the song that closes the movie, this film boasts some sheer hilarity. I enjoy smart films, even when the smart is in the form of satire. A movie like the Lif of Brian further illustrates how mediocre many of the new Hollywood comedies are (Talladega Nights, R.V., etc.).

I recommend this movie. Granted it can be described as an acquired taste, yet I found the taste fast to acquire. Four stars.

1 out of 5 stars Controversial?.......2007-03-26

With by far the majority raving over this trite and predictably British schoolyard humour since its release, I would hardly ever have called it 'controversial'.
Seems the vocal Christians were surprisingly mum over this one. Could have sent this 5 star rating down a few pegs if they'd spoken up against what they would have called mockery and blasphemy.

Well since I love Monty Python it's always awesome. The CDs were in great shape.

4 out of 5 stars Retrospective.......2007-01-16

I really enjoyed seeing the old sketches, although some of the commentary was a bit forced and boring. John Cleese as a crotchety 92 year old was pretty lame. (I am a fan of most of Cleese's work.) It was a Christmas present for my teenage son, who LOVES it and has watched it over and over again, so it was money well spent. It's great to hear my boy singing the Lumberjack Song in German.

5 out of 5 stars This parrot is no more... it has ceased to be!.......2007-03-11

My dad loved Holy grail so much he actually bought the vhs, in around 1995. Now some of you would say, thats not a big deal? WEll for my dad, buying a movie when you had a tv (hbo none the less) was like going fishing with a freezer full of fish, It just didnt add up. But this movie was so great and hilarious he caved and bought it. Well now we are in this Dvd era and soon to be something else, so i decided to buy this movie on Dvd. And i saw this great deal with the tv show and a sort-of random add in movie. The ANFSCD is classic, but most of my friends do not find Monty Python funny. Yet they also did not like Clerks I, so do not take their judgment too seriously (or rationally). WEll to the point, MP & the HG + ANFSCD are great and worth the price. Then they add in a almost-as-funny movie, that just sealed the deal.

4 out of 5 stars Only way to get the Baron.......2007-01-18

Our son wanted The Adventures of Baron Munchausen for Christmas. This was the only way (boxed set of three, and we already own The Holy Grail)to get a copy. Service from Amazon was amazing, as usual. Overall, not a bad deal for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.......2007-01-11

If you are a fan of Monty Python, this is a must have. The Holy Grail is quite possibly the funniest movie ever made and Something Completely Different is a collection of skits that includes the Funniest Joke Ever Told, Hell's Grannies, and the famous Parrot skit. The three movies are all on separate discs in the thinner DVD cases so it isn't even as bulky as most boxed sets. Overall, no Monty Python fan's library is complete without this set.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate example of British humor.......2007-01-10

I have to say that anything to do with Monty Python craziness is absolutely hilarious. I've even heard rumors that Jacqueline Kennedy as First Lady adored Monty Python and would invite friends to the White House to watch their movies.

5 out of 5 stars And Now For Something Completely Hilarious.......2006-01-03

Monty Python are probably the best known sketch comedian ever. They made a tv show, Monty Python's Flying Circus, and several hilarious movies.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
Their first movie, which is a collection of their best skits from their tv show. This movie is hilarious. It includes The Lumberjack Song, The Dead Parrot Sketch, The Dirty Fork, and the World Funniest Joke.

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
Their best movie. It's about Arthur and his knights looking for the Holy Grail. This movie will make you laugh insanely. Funny moments include The Killer Rabbit, The Knights Who Say Ni, and The Black Knight.

THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN
This movie is not a Monty Python film but was made by Terry Gilliam and co-stars Eric Idle, both of whom are former Pythons.
A must have for any Monty Python fan.

This set deserves the five stars and more. I recommend this to any Monty Python fan, British Comedy fan, or comedy fan in general. Too bad it didn't inlude The Meaning Of Life or Life Of Brian.

Monty Python TV shows, movies, records, and books are a time capsule of their anarchic lunacy. But more precious is an audience with Python, and this three-volume boxed set is as close as we can get. Live at the Hollywood Bowl is the long-sought-after 1982 concert film in which the Fab Six perform their greatest hits before a wildly enthusiastic crowd.

4 out of 5 stars Live at the Hollywood Bowl + Extras.......2005-12-21

If you're a Python fan, you've probably seen all their TV episodes and their major feature films. This two-DVD set collects material you probably haven't seen, namely their concert film "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" and their early 1970s appearance on German television.

"Hollywood Bowl" is a true treat from the middle 1970s. By this time, Monty Python were bonafide celebrities and it's a thrill to see them perform so many of their best sketches in front of a live and supportive audience. I greatly prefer their performances here to their earlier renditions on their TV show - like all great teams they had gotten better with both experience and time. All the Pythons are especially self-confident as performers here, and as a bonus we have a couple of musical numbers courtesy of Neil Innes. I especially enjoyed the irreverent sketch where John Cleese plays the Pope.

The German Episode hasn't aged nearly as well. There's some good material (especially a mock-documentary about Albrecht Durer) but it's hampered by poor video quality. Honestly, the entire thing looks like it was filmed in Super 8 and the constant subtitling doesn't help matters. It looks like a third generation bootleg. The best of the sequences also appear (in considerably higher quality) in "Hollywood Bowl." You do get "The Lumberjack Song" sung in German, however. And it is a kick hearing Graham Chapman speak German with a thick American accent.

The remainder of the discs contain "20 Years of Monty Python," a greatest-hits style program hosted by Steve Martin, and a group interview conducted by Robert Klein. It's fun for completists.

Still, "Hollywood Bowl" is the real draw and its a pleasure to see it on a reasonably priced DVD with extras.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, yeah!!.......2005-08-10

So, we have two live performances, a best-of type compilation, and a German episode in German.

Live at the Hollywood Boal has always looked like it was done on a $10 budget. It looks no better here. It's still VERY funny, and our only complete document of a live Python show.

The Aspen Comedy appearance is superb, a great reunion and interview with many new and hysterical bits. This is probably the final time all five will get together and really be fun.

The "Parrot Sketch Not Included" compilation has some good Steve Martin bits, and a final appearance of all six members together, shortly before the death of Graham Chapman. There's really not much more to reccomend to this.

Then there's the German episode #1. This is perhaps one of the best Monty Python shows ever, with somply great writing, a very brisk pace, almost no filler, and a great appearance by John Cleese as Little Red Riding Hood. This is the episode I turn to when I feel down, and it's inclusion is perhaps one of the best things that A&E has accomplished with their wonderful re-issues of all things Python. Very, very good.

All in all, a good set to own.

5 out of 5 stars The title's a bit misleading..........2005-08-03

...but nothing can be said about the quality of material contained within these DVD's.

The first of the four main programs in this set is the Pythons' live performance at the Hollywood Bowl in the early 80's. It's a performance so intimate that you feel that you're actually in the audience watching the sketches take place, which are of high quality. I had never seen this show before I bought the DVD, and I was not dissapointed. Also on the first disk is an interview titled "Live in Aspen." This is not neccessarily a Python show, but it does bring the 5 surviving Pythons (and the 1 non-surviving Python) together on stage again. The program can be informative, but for the most part, it's hysterical. I'm not going to spoil anything for you (if you haven't had it spoiled for you already).

Disk 2 is where things start getting Not-So-Live. Not in the sense that the title implies, anyway. However, the "20 years of Monty Python" program that is present on here is probably the best thing to come out of these DVD's. It's consistently hilarious, and great for folks who are not particularly familiar with the TV show. (the end of the program is pretty cool as well). Also there is an entire Monty Python's Flying Circus episode on here. The catch? It was filmed for German TV. My personal opinion is that the episode is above average, but the enjoyment of the program is probably brought down by the fact that you have to read subtitles for 45 minutes straight. I guess this counts as more of a special feature, though.

If there's any problem with this set, it's that some sketches are repeated throughout the four programs. It gets tedious to go through them over and over again. However, getting so much great stuff for under $20 can never be a bad thing.

4 out of 5 stars monty python live 2-disc set WHERE'S THE PARROT SKETCH?.......2004-02-26

just one complaint but it's a big one. under the blurb on the hollywood bowl it states clearly that the "incomparable parrot sketch" is one performed along with the lumberjack song and the philosophers song. the only reason i bought the set was for the parrot sketch. CAVEAT EMPTOR---THE PARROT SKETCH IS NOT ON EITHER DISC! there is about a 2 minute clip of the parrot sketch included in the aspen part of disc 1. but that is all. terribly disappointed not to have the parrot sketch! but there is a bit in the aspen discussion group involving GRAHAM CHAPMAN'S ASHES that is worth the price of the 2-disc set. i saw it on tv when it initially aired and laughed probably as hard as i did the first time i heard the parrot sketch. when i saw it these 5 years later i was surprised that i laughed just as hard and as long as i did the first time. you have to see it to believe it.
just be aware of what you are and are not getting. would have given it 5 plus stars if the parrot sketch were included.

5 out of 5 stars And Now For Something Not Completely Live!.......2003-12-08

A&E has done a great service to Monty Python fans the world over by finally releasing rare, out of print, or otherwise unavailable Python material. Disc # 1 starts with Monty Python Live At The Hollywood Bowl. The group opens with the song "Sit On My Face" wearing long aprons and, when they turn to go off stage, reveal their bare buttocks! This is followed by Graham Chapman, playing Colin 'Bomber' Harris, who wrestles himself to a pinfall. The Crunchy Frog skit concerns the Whizzo Chocolate Company and their choice of chocolate-covered confectionaries, such as anthrax ripple and cockroach cluster. This sketch is highlighted by Terry Gilliam throwing up in his policeman's hat and then being forced to wear the hat! The Custard Pies sketch involves demonstrating the history of physical comedy with pratfalls and pie throwing, with Terry Jones getting the worst of it. Truly, this is Monty Python at their subtle best. The concert ends with a rousing version of the Lumberjack Song. That concert is followed by Monty Python Live At Aspen, hosted by comedian Robert Klein. The group members talk about their early days at the BBC and their transition into movies. For their film work in particular, they receive an American Film Institute Star Award. Since this show was taped in 1998, Graham Chapman sadly had passed away. An urn supposedly containing his ashes represents him and also gets the biggest laughs at the event!

Disc #2 starts with a 1989 retrospective of the group, hosted by Steve Martin. Steve talks about Monty Python for a few minutes, followed by an hour of sketches from their classic TV series. This is very much a hit or miss affair, as some of their weaker skits are included and some of their best sketches are not shown in their entirety. Steve Martin appears at the end of the hour, opens a door to find the Pythoners huddled in a closet, and then promptly shuts the door on them. That retrospective is followed by Monty Python's German Episode #1. Apparently, German TV paid for the Pythoners to perform two episodes of their series in Germany! Naturally, the sketches are in German with English subtitles. It's surreal to hear the Lumberjack Song sung in German! Some of this footage appears in various collections, particularly the Olympic events and the Little Red Riding Hood sketch. It's great to finally see the 45 minute German show in its entirety. For completists, Monty Python's German Episode #2 is included in A&E's "The Life Of Python" boxed set. With 2 DVDs clocking in at 4 1/2 hours, "Monty Python Live!" is an essential addition to every Python fan's collection.

Description

The Monty Python team are at it again in their second movie. This time we follow King Arthur and his knights in their search for the Holy Grail. This isn't your average medieval knights and horses story - for a start, due to a shortage in the kingdom, all the horses have been replaced by servants clopping coconuts together.

4 out of 5 stars Wholly grilled - 70s dada.......2006-11-19

At the end of the 1970s, Monty Python was the height of British Humor. Since we Yanks have had a bit of an inferiority complex about that for the last couple-hundred years, that made them the height of humor. Add in that whole legendary grail thing. C'mon guys, you've had centuries - longer if you paint yourselves blue. This side of the pond, we don't have legends. Heck, we've barely had time for any good juicy rumors. Bring `em on! We'll love it!

And we have loved it well, for these many years. The broad gag, the running joke, the literate aside, we've spent years here trying to show y'all that it didn't go over our heads. It really was funny. Lots of it still is.

But times have moved on. Parts are still good, but standards have changed. Fer cryin' out loud, a geeky high school boy with no girlfriend has more gigaflops in his botnet then existed back then. Effects? That's not effects. THIS is effects!

The movie was as good now as it was then, but "good" now isn't what was "good" then. I found the extras to be extraneous. Memory was much kinder to this movie than reality testing was, except in a few places:
"I got better."
"I will taunt you again."
"I'll bite your legs off."

But alas, there is no I in "reminiscing." Well, it's a metaphor. If you just have to be that niggly about it, there are three, but I meant the higher I that it doesn't have, in that metaphoric way. Well, it's my metaphor and it means what I said it means. What do you mean, what I mean? I mean - I mean that you mean what I mean, but not the way you mean it. What do you mean, that you don't mean what I said you mean that I mean? I meant that I meant that you meant that ... never mind.

1 out of 5 stars Shocked at Amazon's decision here..........2006-11-04

This is my first real negative experience with Amazon. I would have sworn that they would 'no problem, we're sorry' exchange the PSP disc with the Extraordinarily Deluxe that I and so many others ordered. Deeply disappointed to learn that they're only return-and-refunding. I have heard of them honoring much more substantial pricing errors... this didn't even seem like much of one. It was a 'good' price, yes ($13.99 pre-order for the new 2 dvd/1 cd Grail re-package), but it wasn't SUCH a ridiculous goof that it seemed impossible...

Anyway. Won't turn me off of Amazon forever, of course, but it does besmirch the near-perfect record they had going.

1 out of 5 stars Bad mistake from Amazon.......2006-10-26

1 out of 5 stars Not The DVD Shown in Picture - Misleading-.......2006-10-22

I saw this in the store but thought I would order it from amazon , the picture shows the dvd version like I saw in the store and said extroardinarily deluxe two-disc edition (it did say that, but not anymore) now I have to pay more than I would have in the store cause I paid shipping to get here and now I have to pay to ship back then go buy it from store , two payments of shipping for nothin'. Agrivating.

1 out of 5 stars Not a DVD!!!!!!.......2006-10-21

What a rip off! This is my very first bad experience with Amazon. Heck, this is the first time I haven't been extremely satisfied.

Who in the world would purposely order a PSP disc of ANY movie?????? The heading for this item still incorrectly states that it is a two (2) disc set. It does not mention that it is in some stange format no one in their right mind would buy. You can imagine my surprise when I opened the case and found what looked like some kind of strange contraceptive device. Don't order this!
