Jim Henson's fantasy epic The Dark Crystal doesn't take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but like Star Wars it takes the audience to a place that exists only in the imagination and, for an hour and a half, on the screen. Recalling the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe. Henson and codirector Frank Oz have pushed puppetry into a new direction: traditional puppets, marionettes, giant bodysuits, and mechanical constructions are mixed seamlessly in a fantasy world of towering castles, simple huts, dank caves, a giant clockwork observatory, and a magnificent landscape that seem to have leaped off the pages of a storybook. Muppet fans will recognize many of the voice actors--a few characters sound awfully close to familiar comic creations--but otherwise it's a completely alien world made familiar by a mythic quest that resonates through stories over the ages. --Sean Axmaker

This movie I bought because I had never seen it. If you don't mind squaking bird sounds and nails on a chalkboard- than go for it. I had a headache half way through. This movie has more noise than dialogue.

There are 10 Skekses left in the world. This cruel, violent species's emporer is dying. There are 10 Mystics left in the world. The wisest Mysitc is dying. When the Mystic leader (the dying one) was younger he rescued a Gelfling from a Skekses raid (there were more of each species back then) and dubbed him Jem. The Mystics taught him everything - except the prophecy (IF YOU TRY TO STOP A PROPHECY IN A MOVIE YOU WILL FAIL, PERIOD.) The prophecy said that if a Gelfling does not repair the Crystal, located in the Crystal Castle, before the 3 suns lined up the world will be plunged into a time of evil forever. Skekses send bug-monsters to catch and kill Jem. Jem goes to the ugly witch Olgra to get the shard which came off. As he turns to leave, the bug-monster things attack Olgra's dome-house. Then they carry off Olgra, but she turns out not to be a Gelfling, let alone Jem. Jem is running for dear life. Then this puffball dog thing growls at him. A girl Gelfling comes out and says something to the puffball, who shuts up. It turns out that the Pod People had saved HER from the SAME raid. Love love lovie dovie. Jem goes to the Pod People with Kira, but then the bugs attack again, and carry off the Pod People, who also turn out not to be Gelflings. Then the bugs actually almost get them, but Kira grabs Jem and flies down a handy cliff. Jem says that he doen't have wings, but Kira replies that, of course not, he's a BOY! Then a Skekse gets banished, and says NOT to repair the Crystal, because they didn't need to, no, they could just live out here forever. Jem thwacks him, and Skekse gets cut.

Although the characters are Muppets, there are no real jokes. Plenty of adventure. So good, my critical-of-every-detail dad watched it twice a day for who knows how long. Also, in 2008, a sequel called the Power of the Dark Crystal will come out, but with (ugh) ANAMATRONIC PUPPETS. I will watch both, personally.

This is a pretty good movie, it was better to me when I was little though :) Since technology has come so far along now. I couldn't get over the price though, it was $6.99 so I couldn't resist adding it to my collection.

Our favorite American hero has returned in this rerelease of the now cult-classic G.I. Joe movie from 1987. Once again G.I. Joe must protect the world from total obliteration. Cobra, the deadliest of foes and leader of an underground race of snake people, is proving to be a great threat to humankind. After spending many generations underground, he plans to take over the world again (with the help of his evil foes Pythona and Serpentor) by releasing deadly spores into the atmosphere. These spores can transform all life into the weakest of creatures, which means humans could potentially devolve into amoebas. However, in order to accomplish this, Cobra must acquire the Broadcast Energy Transmitter. (The BET activates the spores.) Luckily G.I. Joe is there to stop Cobra and his evil army. There are terrific fight scenes in which nobody gets hurt (like in all great A-Team episodes) and the cartoon style is true to the G.I. Joe character. All your favorite G.I. Joe characters are here, including Falcon, Bazooka, Alpine, Duke, Snowjob, and Roadblock. Starring voices also help lend a hand: Don Johnson, Burgess Meredith, and Sergeant Slaughter. Forever and always G.I. Joe will be "fighting for freedom wherever there's trouble, over land and sea and air!" --Samantha Allen Storey

Description

A 40,000-year-old race of snake people resurface, and with help of Serpentor, Desto, Baroness and Dr. Mindbender, plan to eliminate all of mankind and rebuild Cobrala. Once rulers of Earth, the Snake people were driven underground by ice-age temperatures. While in exile, they developed a plant whose spores turn ordinary men into mindless, weak animals. The key to their plan is G.I. Joe's secret project--the Broadcast Energy Emitter. Only this device generates enough heat so that the spores can mature. Humankind's very existance depends on G.I. Joe, but are they strong enough, smart enough, cunning enough to fight a warrior race with 40,000 years of experience?

3 out of 5 stars Was never and still not a fan of G.I. Joe.......2007-06-15

Overall, I hate G.I.Joe. I dont own the seasons. I hate anything that contains a whole lot of shooting and nobody is ever shot. And if they were shot, it was never, ever, fatally. If there's ammo flying. Animated or otherwise, I want to see people shot dead! GI Joe never gave me that. And there was no blood. With that being said. I pretty much thought this movie was decent. Because it had a little blood. It continued with Cobra fighting for world domination. And with the Joes trying to stop them.

I dont know about others, but I liked the dark setting of this one. And that opening was to die for. This movie delivers more with the action. There is fisticuffs all over this movie. The story in my opinion is a mixed bag. They do a good job in my opinion with the origin of Cobra the organization and Cobra Commander himself. The plot leading up to the end was ok at best. This is what dragged the movie down alot for me. The new characters on both sides just weren't very likable. Tell you how popular they were. Except for Falcon, none of them made an appearance in the episodes after the movie. 'Nuff said.

Well GI JOE the Movie should appeal to most fans. I thought it was alright even though I'm not a fan of GI Joe. This is the only thing of GI Joe in my collection. If you love the series then pick this up. But to those who are new to this should probably rent it. If you didn't follow the seasons its possible you won't enjoy this the same way a fan would because you don't know the characters. Still if your looking for a movie full of fistfights, you might not be disappointed with this.

5 out of 5 stars A fun time for Joe Fans.......2006-11-06

This movie had its problems, but looking at it now I see a lot of fun. I remember as a kid I didn't like some of the things that happened in the movie. Now I see it as a good mix of G.I. Joe and science fiction two things I have always loved. I never thought of G.I. Joe as science fiction as a kid, but looking back I wonder how I missed all the the super science G.I. Joe had in it. The move's big flaw is that the characters from the show were not used that much in it. They focused on new characters who we didn't get enough time to really care about like we did the old favorites. Still, it is a movie all Joe fans should see. I have shown it to some who have never seen an episode of G.I. Joe and they loved it. It got them to look at the other episodes. Check it out... and... Yo Joe!

3 out of 5 stars Got to get tough Yo Joe!.......2005-09-06

In the 80s cartoon graduation went something like this... He-Man, Transformers, GI Joe, and Ninja Turtles. Yes there were other shows you may have seen, even other shows you may have enjoyed more, but there is no denying that if you were a boy between 5 - 11 these were the shows you mainly remember watching.

G.I. Joe is the series for the patriotic gung-ho attitude of freedom over communism that the 80s really flaunted with stuff like Rocky 4 and the Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi "coke wars". G.I. Joe is also one of the corniest yet lovable animated shows of that time. The series was a constant hit or miss. You either had brilliant shows with plausible plots (like Cobra ruining the oil supply) or farfetched fantasy (The Egyptian gods episode).

So what was G.I. Joe the movie? Well you take the brilliance and mix it with the bizzare and you get Cobra-la. If you take it as is the movie is really action packed and fun, but unfortunately it's supposed to be an awesome American military force that fights terrorism. Instead it looks like "Alien vs Predator" meets "Starship Troopers".

The public service annoucements are the one saving grace. They are truly entertaining and more memorable than the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Too bad America can't do nothing this creative anymore. Japan could teach this young generation something!.......2005-08-08

This movie change the way we look at cartoon's forever. Kids were blown away by the animation the way the drawing's were so mature looking and not cartoony. Back then U.S.A. could make good orginal cartoons, drawing them almost like it's an anime. The Joe's deal with an 40,000 year old race of snake which looks half snake half human. Shargent Slutter the wrestler had his cartoon character on this movie. The action is way cooler in this movie then the series.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired casting and brilliant writing.......2005-03-24

Brilliant to get Burgess Meredith, who played the tragically martyred journalist Ernie Pyle in the original movie of the STORY OF G.I. JOE, to take the role of Globulus in this sequel made some 40 years later! Okay, it's not strictly a sequel, but talk about going over from the forces of light over to the dark side! No one does it better than Burgess Meredith, as he proved playing the Penguin in the 1960s TV series of BATMAN, and now here in the middle of this stylish movie cartoon.

Some complain that the emotional tone of the movie is too different from the TV series we all grew up watching. On the other hand some of the exact same writers were employed on both, including Ron Friedman, who wrote "Revenge of the Cobra." I saw his movie (that he wrote) BROTHER BEAR and I'm looking forward to his next animated special, Disney's new one CHICKEN LITTLE.

Friedman also wrote the TRANSFORMERS MOVIE. Where the hell is his OSCAR? Better send in Tunnel Rat and Dial Tone to retrieve it, boys!

ONE OF THE SCARIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME Even More Terrifying 30 Years Later!
- Entertainment Weekly

The Ultimate Two-Disc Edition Of The Original Classic Now Remastered in High-Definition And Loaded With All-New Extras.

It has been called grisly, sick, and perverse as well as raw, unshakeable, and the movie that redefined horror. It was attacked by churches, banned by governments, and acclaimed by only the bravest of critics. It stunned audiences worldwide and set a new standard in movie terror forever. In 1974, writer-producer-director Tobe Hooper unleashed this dark, visionary tale about a group of five young friends who face a nightmare of torment at the hands of a depraved Texas clan. Today it remains unequaled as a landmark of outlaw filmmaking and unparalleled in its impact as perhaps the most frightening motion picture ever made.

Dark Sky Films presents this masterpiece like you ve never seen or heard it before, newly transferred in High Definition from the 16mm camera originals, remixed in 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo Surround, and featuring never-before-seen Bonus Materials produced exclusively for this definitive collection.

This sensational, extremely influential, 1974 low-budget horror movie directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, Lifeforce, Salem's Lot), may be notorious for its title, but it's also a damn fine piece of moviemaking. And it's blood-curdling scary, too. Loosely based on the true crimes of Ed Gein (also a partial inspiration for Psycho), the original Jeffrey Dahmer, Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows a group of teenagers who pick up a hitchhiker and wind up in a backwoods horror chamber where they're held captive, tortured, chopped up, and impaled on meat hooks by a demented cannibalistic family, including a character known as Leatherface who maniacally wields one helluva chainsaw. The movie's powerful sense of dread is heightened by its grainy, semi-documentary style--but it also has a wicked sense of humor (and not that camp, self-referential variety that became so tiresome in subsequent horror films of the '70s, '80s, and '90s). OK, in case you couldn't tell, it's "not for everyone." But as a landmark in the development of the horror/slasher genre, it ranks with Psycho, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Everything, including the chainsaw on the kitchen sink..........2007-06-17

Fans of this cult favorite can relax - no, they didn't gloss up the film stock with digital sheen to make it look as though it were filmed yesterday. To be certain, TCM was cleaned up: the colors are brighter and more vibrant, and the film's nocturnal sequences aren't quite as murky as they were in the VHS edition. But this minor buffing hasn't betrayed the film's gritty, low-budget, high-grain 16mm (as transferred to 35mm stock) aesthetic. The '70s zeitgeist isn't even remotely diminished, but the attractive wide shots (mostly rural Texan landscapes) are as eye-catching as ever. The only way to get a better look at this film is to obtain the original theatrical reels, cigarette burns and all!

I hardly need to explain a film that's become an B-movie legend, one of the most successful and notorious independent films in American cinematic history. The synopsis, in summary: a traveling group of well-intentioned young twenty somethings run afoul of a family of redneck cannibals, one of which wears human faces as masks and uses a certain popular power tool for hunting and butchering. Fans of this film know the rest, and newcomers don't need to know any more. Even though the sheer horror of this film has been overrated (as is that of most popular horror films), few low-budget slasher flicks provide as much excitement and black humor as this one. If you haven't seen this yet, there's no reason not to.

This DVD offers quite a few features for fans of TCM, Tobe Hooper and Gunnar Hansen. Prominent among these are the soundtrack selections. For standard viewing, the film's soundtrack can be heard as a crisp stereo surround track that's a bit bright, and as the film's original mono recording, which is blunt, a bit messy and preferable for anyone who wants a more authentic viewing experience. The third option is a conversational audio commentary voiced by Hooper, Hansen and cinematographer Daniel Pearl. For fans and film students alike, I couldn't recommend this feature more; it's informative and very funny. Unlike certain audio commentary tracks, which are very dry as a result of the participants being recorded independently, this one benefits from the interaction between director, actor and cinematographer, especially when the three are comparing memories and discussing related experiences of a film that they collaborated on almost thirty years prior to this recording.

The disc's deleted scenes and alternate footage aren't quite so essential, but they are of mild interest. All of them consist of raw, untreated footage. The clips that haven't any sound are supplemented with textual script extracts. I think that audio commentary tracks would have been preferable to the textual summaries provided for each clip. Yes, the infamous makeup scene is included.

One of the more interesting features is "A Study In Filming," which consists of every unedited shot that was used to film the twenty-second scene in which Leatherface commits his first on screen murder. Even though this is essentially filler, it is somewhat engrossing, as it illustrates how much footage is required for a heavily edited (albeit short) scene.

This disc would be far from complete without the theatrical and televised trailers for the 1974 Bryanston release and New Line Cinema's 1980 re-release. Both sets of trailers are adequate and stylistically representative of their respective periods of release. Although it was hardly necessary to include the ludicrous trailers of TCM's two awful sequels and the incomparably terrible remake, they do make for compulsive viewing. They may induce squirms in a state of embarrassed discomfort.

The blooper reel is short, but rather amusing. Although it's nice to know that the making of this film was sometimes as jocular as it was maddening, the finished product is much more hilarious.

Silent footage of the Family's house is included. This provides a more detailed perspective of the macabre interior art design that featured quite a few chicken and human bones. I needn't mention that this is strictly intended for fans.

The provided film and production stills are competently shot, but not terribly interesting. They're included for the sake of completeness.

On the other hand, the scanned lobby cards and posters are definitely worth a look. The cards are typical (and probably worth quite a bit on eBay), but the art design of the theater posters are especially interesting. The Italian, German and Japanese posters are especially attractive and evocative, and some of them implement a few photos and paintings that I've never seen before.

For hardcore fans of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," this is an essential purchase if they don't already have it. For the more casual fan of horror and '70s B-films, this is definitely worth a rental. For anyone with a weak stomach, stay away - the nausea that this film can produce lives up to its' cult legend!

5 out of 5 stars Not a gorefest, but a real celluloid nightmare..........2007-06-04

This is as terrifying as you've heard. Whether you saw it on an old, faded VHS copy, or you saw it in the theater when it came out, or on a later, remasted edition, it is so relentless and claustrophobic that it is impossible to shed from your mind. The thing about this film that despite its reputation, it has hardly any gore in it. It is not a gorehound film, not even close. It runs along the lines of Night of the Living Dead, an independent horror film that is truly scary and disturbing. It's not a film in which you get a few scares and then some comic relief. It's a plain nightmare of a film, and even in the end when one of the captives escape, you're still scared like hell. It burns into your subconscious like only a handful of films do (Cannibal Holocaust, Night of the Living Dead, and Salo for example). It's a testament to the filmmaker, Tobe Hooper, for making such a great film that still can scare people today. Forget the sequels or the remakes: this is the only one you need to see.

5 out of 5 stars i'm shaking my head.......2007-04-25

This movie feels so wrong and yet so right at the same time. It tortures your mind and brings out your fear but I still love it anyway. I'm glad I waited until I was 24 to watch this movie as it is that unsettling. I've never been so relieved that a movie was over not because I didn't like it but because I was so glad that the terror I was experiencing was finally over. I was exhausted when I got through with this film. It is my top 3 for scariest movies of all time. One of the best things about this movie is that there is very little blood. NOT recommend for kids as they WILL have nightmares.

5 out of 5 stars The scariest movie ever made!!!.......2007-04-22

I was in high school the first time I saw this movie...I watched it one day at 2 am thinking that it was gonna be just a gory lame kinda horror movie...When it was over, I was too scared to even want to turn off all the lights in the house and go up to bed...It scared the hell out of me...What I really loved about the movie was that since it was such a low budget film it looked too real(Unlike the crappy horror movies that come out now)...If you have never seen any of the TCM movies, this is the one to watch(the remake was ok)...

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest horror films ever made.......2007-04-16

The 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre adheres to the pure and simple slasher movie formula: Introduce a gaggle of sexy young people, make vague gestures to distinguish them--Jessica Biel (Summer Catch) wants to get married and doesn't like pot, so she's our moral compass--then start hacking them to pieces one by one. The visual palette includes grimy crucified dolls, fly-specked pig carcasses, body parts floating in murky jars, a tobacco-chewing redneck sheriff, and many slender beams of sunlight cutting through dank, dusty interiors. The camera lovingly photographs Biel's tank-topped bosom and sculpted abs as she's running in terror from a bloated, chainsaw-wielding, human-skin-wearing maniac. This remake lacks the macabre comedy of the original; it's all about the nauseating sensation of waiting for something to jump out of the dark. Also featuring Eric Balfour (Six Feet Under) and R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket, Mail Call). --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Gave me chills!!.......2007-06-21

When this movie first came out, I remember going to the theatre to watch it. It was sometime around Halloween and because I'm a huge fan of the holiday, I thought watching this would be fun. I love scary movies. Nothing really scares me anymore because most scary movies have the same storyline so what's to be scared about? However, this movie had me covering my eyes during some parts and it gave me chills.

So what's this movie about? If you've seen the original, it's basically the same thing. If you haven't, here's a brief rundown. A group of kids are on a roadtrip when they spot a girl on the side of the road. When they pick her up, they discover that something is terribly wrong. Upon looking for help, they come across a host of creepy people including one in particular, a chainsaw-wielding killer.

What's to like about this movie? First, this movie contains an abundance of famous actors and actresses including Jessica Biel (which is refreshing to watch her go from 7th Heaven to a horror flick), Eric Balfour, and R. Lee Ermey. There's a ton of eye candy in this movie for those who like that sort of thing. Second, the beginning of this film states that it's based on a true story. If you're a crime buff like I am, you'd know that this movie is based extremely loosely on Ed Gein, a serial killer who mutilated women and made various items from their body parts. If you attempt to believe the "based on a true story" part, this movie is even better. To think that there's a lunatic out there that chases people with chainsaws and experiments with their bodies is almost too much to bear. Third, not including the gory scenes, there are a lot of disturbing characters and scenes that will shock you. And lastly, fans of scary movies should enjoy something new based on a classic.

And what's not to like? Look, in general remakes tend to be not as good as the original. If you like older scary movies, you probably won't like this one. I personally prefer this movie to the original but I understand why some people prefer the original.

If you're looking for a good scary movie and don't really care how it compares to the original, check this one out.

3 out of 5 stars Better than the original version..........2007-06-15

Had a bit of a read up on Amazon.com from people who had seen the movie and they all said it was totally frightening, you wouldn't see this alone in the dark, even with the light on, one boy's arm hairs were standing on end.
So, as you do when so many say the same sorts of things; this embedds in the back of your brain, and you subconsciously expect to see the worst of the worst. Not worst as in bad, but worst as in gruesome, horrifying, nightmare-inducing. (Not much use for me as I ALWAYS have nightmares, with or without horror movies!) :P
First of all, I just want to clarify that the Chainsaw Massacre WAS enjoyable to watch. As all horror movies are. However, the amount of violence, squirmish deaths and suspense was very, very low. In other words, it was hardly HORRORfying. Hah. Ha. Lame. joke. time.
There are two kinds of cliches in most horror films which are usually done over and over again. One being the murderer depicted as a male. The other, a disfigured monster-like looking face that looks inhuman. This just makes the movie seem silly and unrealistic, whereas you want to be engrossed and frightened by what the murderer is planning, instead you feel like the character is just another outtake or backbencher from an old Star Wars movie.
The normalest looking people can often be the most suspicious of criminals, they aren't all ugly and freakish, some can be the most calmly spoken and well dressed 'saints' you could ever meet. You never know what's really going on inside someone's brain until they moment their true intentions come out, and they snap. That's why you gotta be wary of strangers until they can prove their honesty, loyalty and trust, and even then they can let you down further down the track...
It's also hard to tell in these movies of torture, the exact reasons for wanting to do certain things. For example, the teenagers hooked up on a meat hook; are they cannibals? Do we see any evidence of cannibalism? What exactly are all the jars and bits of thread? What do they do there when they're not chopping pigs and tourists up? Do they do this sort of thing all the time? Who is the man in the wheelchair? None of these questions are really answered; and if they are, they aren't answered very well...
The violence was medium. The most blood you ever get is when one of the characters blows their head off in the back of a van. And even then there is not a lot of blood. The deaths are drawn out and hardly make you hide behind your lounge chair in fear. No headless corpes or halved bodies from the maniac weilding the chainsaw, as soon as someone gets cut, the cameraman seems to move away from them as if they too, as well as the audience, are creaming their pants wondering what will happen next.
But thankyou all the same for this movie; I don't hate it and will definately hang onto it. A good movie to see at random times and watch like it's never been seen, thus creating the thrill once again.
Oh, and is this honestly a true life story? Well, they do say truth is stranger than fiction... definately in this case it would be true!

3 out of 5 stars You've got to admit that chainsaws work pretty well in horror movies.......2007-06-07

Slick, watchable fun... perfect for when you don't want to slog through a complicated plot but just want some scary scenes and gruesome villains. The opening and closing sequences, which make the movie feel like one of those "true crime" shows that endlessly play on the A&E channel, are also effective.

But it's probably the gore you'll remember most about this. The other reviewers are right: whatever your opinion regarding how this movie compares to the original artistically and creatively, this remake is inarguably MUCH gorier than its predecessor. Having said that, however, I still think the film pulls its punches on a few occasions, probably to secure its "R" rating and avoid the dreaded, unmarketable "NC-17". If you think today's horror movies rely too much on gore, you'll likely appreciate the occasional restraint here. Myself, I think if you're paying to see a movie called "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", you know what you're signing on for and don't need to be protected. But I have to admit that, even with the filmmakers' occasional squeamishness, this certainly is no Disney movie and, as a whole, it does deliver the goods.

And having Jessica Biel running around in it ain't bad, either.

3 out of 5 stars Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 vs. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003:.......2007-05-20

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974:

* This one is SOO MUCH SCARIER AND SUSPENSFUL!!!
* The evil gang desing is SOO CREEPY!!
* The settings are also scarier.
* There are more screams here.
* The story here is better.
* The violence is more realistic.
* The ending is SO MUCH BETTER!

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003:

* Better budget.
* Better acting.
* More blood and gore.
* More graphic violence.

To my conclution, no need to say that the 1974 version is beter! But if you only want to see blood and gore then I recomend this one.

adios.

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-05-01

Being the horror movie buff that I am, I can honestly say that few movies have kept me on the edge of my seat like this one did. It may fall into your typical "slasher movies" category but it does that with excellence. Yes, it features the usual bunch of kiddos herded by a blonde chick with a cleavage; yes, they're lost in a creepy ghost-town; and yes, almost all of them die a gruesome death. Yet despite all that, the film is just utterly fun. You indulge in your fear. I literally had to bite my fingers throughout to make sure they were there. The brick house where all the freak-show takes place is a horror movie to itself. And You know you'll never look at a chainsaw the same way again. I thus highly recommand this film, just don't say I didn't warn you: get ready for some really nasty images.

Straight from the set-'em-up and knock-'em-down school of teen-horror filmmaking, Stay Alive gives literal meaning to the parental lament, "Those games will kill you someday." Not that you'll find any parents in this gimmicky thriller set in New Orleans; they're conspicuously absent when Hutch (Jon Foster) and his hardcore gamer pals discover "Stay Alive," a mysterious next-generation computer game that has a nasty way of precipitating mayhem, horror, and death. If your character dies in the game, you're doomed to die in identically grisly fashion in real life. So, just don't play the game, right? WRONG. This being a teen horror flick with a screenplay that makes no sense whatsoever, the gamer pals (including victim #2, Hutch's boss, played with game-addicted fervor by Adam Goldberg) obsessively investigate the game and its creepy Ring-like origins in the 17th century murder spree of a woman known as "The Blood Countess." Because movies like this are best viewed on a steady diet of Pop Tarts and Ritalin, Jimmi Simpson earns top honors as the gamer pal with the creepiest behavior, and Malcolm in the Middle fans will enjoy the presence of Frankie Muniz as a gamer geek whose primary fashion statement consists of grimy T-shirts and green plastic poker-visors. While not nearly as fun or clever as the Final Destination movies, Stay Alive delivers a few good deaths while blatantly stealing most of its horror highlights from Ju-On and other Japanese horror hits. It's junk from start to finish, but its target audience of mallrats and gamers (especially those with attention deficit disorder, which helps to ignore the plot holes) won't mind a bit.--Jeff Shannon

Description

The blood runs deep in this extended director's cut of STAY ALIVE, the mind-bending thriller about a killer video game. The real world and the game world gruesomely collide when a group of friends play STAY ALIVE, a mysterious underground videogame that kills the gamer whose character dies in play. In a death-defying race against time, the survivors must solve the mystery of the game while desperately trying to stay alive. More spine-chilling gore and action, plus all-new never-before-seen material -- including a new character and subplot -- push this version way over the edge of what could be seen in theaters.

4 out of 5 stars This was a good horror flick.......2007-06-30

I liked this horror flick because it was a different kind of story. It was a story of some people getting together and playing the same game of a "ghost that was called back from the dead" only to realize that the ghost was looking for revenge to anyone that encounters it within the game. If you would "die" in the game, you would die in real life of the same circumstances. It was a good horror flick and did keep me interested through out the movie. I do highly recommend this movie to anyone that is a horror fan and likes a "different" story.

1 out of 5 stars Why Not Just Destroy the Game.......2007-06-24

Stay Alive has an interesting premise and a good looking cast. The problem is that the execution (no real pun intended) is horrible. This was the last film made in New Orleans pre Katrina so I had some interest in seeing it. I must say that the City is quite possibly the best character in the film.

Hutch (Jon Foster) is an avid videogamer who inherits a prototype game from a recently deceased friend. After playing the game with a group of friends they begin to die in the way they were killed in the game. On a mission to find out how to stop the deaths the legend of the Blood Countess is revealed by an author who sounds amazingly like Elmer Fudd. What follows is standard slasher fare with the obigatory jerky girls of Asian horror thrown in for good measure.

The film looks terribly dark through most of the film and the sound design is not the best that I've heard on a new film. Add to this a weak storyline and too perfect characters and you get a film that it is better to stay away from.

Not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars An OK horror flick........2007-06-09

Major points to the creators of this film for creating a horror movie that is different from the rest of the movies in its' genre (in terms of the video game aspect). That being said, this movie could be much better as it pulls ideas from many other horror movies.

So what's to like about this movie? As I said above, it's different. A group of kids must stay alive by playing a video game that controls how they die. As far as keeping my interest, it did a fair job of doing so.

What's not to like? I would have liked for the creators to have more of the actual video game in the movie. If these kids are literally trying to stay alive by playing a video game, you would think that they would show more of the actual video game to let the audience see what is going on. Also, the characters are nothing to be excited about. In general, "scary" movies" contain likeable characters so that you feel some sort of emotion when something bad happens to them. This creates a more intense movie. Unfortunately, Stay Alive's characters are incredibly unlikeable. Furthermore, if you've seen any scary movie, you'll know what's going to happen in this movie. It's very predictable.

My verdict? 3/5 stars. It's an ok movie. Nothing special. The flaws I mentioned above ruined what could have possibly been a great movie. If you really want to see this movie, I suggest renting it rather than buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Some will watch it more than once.......2007-05-28

I don't know why all the negative reviews for this movie. I watched it a number of times and had fun with it. I enjoyed the characters and the way they were depicted. Rip Off of other films? Hey, in today's (especially horror)movies, what isn't? The idea is to make the next one better than the others or just as darn good. I thought Stay Alive did that.

I give it four stars for it's entertainment value, but that's just me.

3 out of 5 stars Not your average horror flick........2007-05-01

I'm sure most people interested in this movie have seen the trailer at the least, which tells you most of the story right there. Dude gets a killer video game, literally, and wants to share with friends. It's interesting, the graphics decent, the acting not bad. Through most of it, I'm thinking to myself, 'It's Doogie Howser turned techno geek'. As my daughter and I watched it, I kept waiting for Sophia Bush to get 'bumped off'. While some pople think it's cliche, I thought it was a bit more innovative than that. The whole set up, of it being a killer video game, while reaching into fantasy, was actually done quite well. There isn't an overabundance of 'hack and slash' like the Jason or Freddy movies, it is somewhat unique. It's not a movie for everyone, but it is worth seeing at least once if you are into special effects and graphics. It isn't nearly as cheesy as most of the garbage that's been getting onto the sci-fi channel. I don't know if I can take another really horrible sci-fi thriller starring Casper Van Dien...Someone save us from that crappolla!!

Italian exploitation legend Umberto Lenzi birthed the cannibal subgenre of Italian horror with Deep River Savages, but he turned out one of the so-called classics of the genre with this 1981 effort, a blunt, brutal story of five New Yorkers who face the wrath of angry Amazon cannibals. Three completely clueless would-be anthropologists set out to disprove the racist myth of tribal cannibalism perpetuated by colonial Europeans. Turning a blind eye to danger at every turn, they join up with a pair of drug-crazed psychos on the run from supposed cannibals (in truth, the reign of terror has been perpetrated solely by greedy Americans) and then wait patiently for the bloody vengeance of the tribal survivors. Lenzi is no stylist, and his attempts at irony are crude at best, but he delivers all he promises (or threatens): evisceration, emasculation, gouged eyeballs, and a sick twist on the initiation scene from A Man Called Horse. His generous budget allowed him to shoot on location in South America and New York (where a police detective searches for the homicidal drug dealer in a subplot) and lavish attention on his carnage, elevating it to near cult status. More than simply gory, this is a sadistic, cynical, mean-spirited film, for hardcore fans of the genre only.

Lenzi and star John Morghen (the only animated actor in the otherwise flat cast) offer commentary on an alternate track, but Lenzi is all but unintelligible through his thick accent at times. A supplemental interview with Lenzi is helpfully translated by his interviewer. --Sean Axmaker

2 out of 5 stars Rent It First.......2007-06-02

The hype that surrounds this movie is way too high. The acting sucks and the FX are terrible. The popcorn I ate while watching this were really good though.

5 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2007-05-12

Cannibal flicks always go a little further than your average Italian gore-fest and are definitely my favorites, because when I watch a horror movie I want to be rupulsed and disgusted(see definition of horror)I don't want to see little creepy kids that they put in every pop-horror movie now, that [...] doesn't scare me,this scares me.Not on the same level as cannibal holocaust but pretty close.THIS IS REAL HORROR!

1 out of 5 stars Beware: Animal Cruelty.......2007-05-12

I love gory movies (Zombie, Re-Animator) and this one was kind of cool until some characters started chopping off the parts of a real turtle. It was upsetting. There should be a warning for this kind of material. Just a heads up in case you're gonna buy it. (I've read that Cannibal Holocaust also has animal cruelty, but I haven't seen it.)

2 out of 5 stars Not for DVD aficionados.......2006-12-15

I'm rather upset with the technical quality of this DVD. Grindhouse rereleased this disc exactly as it was in 2000, without so much as a 16x9 animorphic upgrade. This is certainly not worth the $20+ dollar price tag Amazon.com has right now.

5 out of 5 stars The 2nd best cannibal film........2006-11-27

This is the second best/most disturbing film next to Cannibal Holocaust which will always be the champion. But thats not taking anything away from Cannibal Ferox which was banned in 31 countires and contains some of the most brutal scenes ever filmed. See this film it wont dissapoint!

Amazon.com essential video

Description

(Horror) Before the death penalty was abolished in the Netherlands in 1860, convicted killers were used in mines to detect dangerous gas leaks and then set them off. If they survived the explosion, they would be pardoned. No one ever survived. Years later, a group of friends enter these mines and awaken their angry spirits and unleash a night of mayhem and murder. Tonight will be slaughter night.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasingly Surprised.......2007-06-28

I was surprised at how well-paced this horror flick was - back to basics, with a group of tourists trapped in an underground labrynth of mines with a vengeful spirit linked to a past of wrong-doings. Standard stalk'n'scare plot well executed, like a low-rent (but exciting) take on Neal Marshall's "The Descent".

5 out of 5 stars I liked it..................2007-04-13

Kris and her father get into a car accident and she ends up loosing her father. Kris and her friends go to Belgium to clean out her fathers study where he had been working on his latest manuscript. While there the caretakes talks them into taking a tour of the mine. While in the mine the group learns the story of Andries Martines who was a murderer and also into black magic. However as it turns out Andries spirit was not laid to rest. I don't want to give away too much of it but I really enjoyed it. Very well done all around and creepy which is a big plus considering some the stinkers I have seen lately!

5 out of 5 stars 1 of the BEST horror movies EVER!.......2007-04-12

so, it starts out like a genuinely creepy ghost story. then, a little voodoo back-story and poof! you have a totally original story-line with a well-written script and plenty of scares that make you jump out of your seat.
it's fun, too. kind of reminds me of the way i felt when i first saw "evil dead," but much-MUCH better!
oh, and there is some gore for the sick and twisted's satisfaction scale.
after i saw it (via netflix), i quickly wanted to add it to my collection of horror greats...so, i did.
it's definitely 1 you want to watch with friends and lots of popcorn, but whatever you do...just be sure and put away your ouiga board!
BOO!!!
i hope you enjoy it as much as i did.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Old School.......2007-06-08

I love this movie! I grew up in the 70's and just takes you back to the days in the "hood" and how things use to be.

2 out of 5 stars Title is misleading.......2007-04-16

I saw this movie way back in like '91. When you see the cover you think maybe a women prison flick with some soft porn or what not. But actually it is a film about black youths living an impoverished life in Compton. It has it's hysterically funny moments, but if you are a true movie buff, you might have to make yourself sit and watch this.
I didn't think it was all that bad cuz I'm not that much of a movie buff and don't pay attention to many details in movies. However, this movie is really cheap and grainy looking, the actors can't really act, the plot is lukewarm and it's only worth about .99 cents.
This movie looks like someone gathered a few neighborhood kids, grabbed a cheap camcorder, started filming and somehow got it on vhs/dvd. It can be an eye sore at times with all the really really 70's clothes and settings and decor.
It's probably worth a watch if you can get it for real cheap, rained in, and really not in the mood or expecting much but a few good laughs.

3 out of 5 stars Watch it for what it is - Blaxploitation.......2006-06-07

When I brought this movie I wasn't expecting much. I thought maybe a movie that would show me a good plot and a low budget production set but nothing more. However, when I started to watch "Black Sisters Revenge" I saw how fast it moved from when Emma (a country girl and the star of the movie) first came to Compton to live with her aunt's family to how she started to shuffle and jivin' in the "chicken n' biscuit joint"; she went to a house party where of course the movie had to show "brothers and sisters" smoking weed and drinking beer; oh yes, we can't forget the gangs that where at the party to `cause some trouble and have a shoot-out; and last but not least Emma fell in love and went to bed with an idiot junkie(the whole plot for the movie. He is the one she goes to bat for when he is in jail). You would think this all happened over a month or so; nope not this movie. This all happened within a 24hr period!
Watching this movie made me realize why white people think so low of black people. This movie made absolutely no sense. I don't want to give a way the whole story for the movie but I can tell you this. If you like shows like Archie Bunker and GoodTimes (which I do) watch the movie with a grain of salt; see it for what it was at that present time and learn from it. Yes the movie is horrible but if it makes you wiser (especially if you are black) than I give the movie a passing grade.

Peace!

3 out of 5 stars "Nobody, I mean nobody, celebrates at Jack In The Box.".......2005-11-22

I love the plot keywords listed for the film Black Sister's Revenge (1976) aka Emma Mae on The Internet Movie Database...Hit In Crotch, Racial Slur, Independent Film, Blaxploitation...not much, but you had me at `Hit In Crotch'. Written, produced, and directed by Jamaa Fanaka (Penitentiary, Penitentiary II, Street Wars), the film features a cast of relative unknown performers, many in their only screen role, including Jerri Hayes, Eddie Allen, Charles D. Brooks III (Soul Vengeance), Malik Carter (Black Belt Jones), and Ernest Williams II, whom some may remember in the pivotal role as `Customer', from the television role "That's My Mama", specifically the episode titled "The Gun"...give me a break, as I had not a lot to work with here...

Jerri Hayes play Emma Mae, a young woman from rural Mississippi (or `Sippi' as was referred to in the film) who has come to L.A. (Compton to be exact) live with her aunt and her family after the passing of Emma Mae's mother. As Emma Mae gets off the bus, her cousins look at her like she's some sort of alien, as the chick is pure corn pone, if you know what I mean. Anyway, her cousins reluctantly let Emma Mae tag along as they go to the local college student union, and the joint is jumping. Her cousins try to set her up, but there are no takers. Emma Mae does eventually catch the eye of a local hoodlum and pill pusher named Jesse (Williams II) after she beats the tar out of his weasely friend named Zeke (Brooks III), earning the respect of her peers (seems Zeke was more vocal than the others in terms of her funky appearance, to which Emma Mae laid a few smacks upside his head). Emma Mae ends up falling hard for Jesse who eventually has an altercation with The Fuzz, goes into hiding (call me mint jelly baby, cause I'm on the lam), eventually gets popped and thrown into the can, the joint, the slammer, the hoosegow, the pen, the tank, the cooler, the jug, the cooler, the brig...what I'm trying to say is he was committed to a house of correction. Anyway, being smitten with the lug, Emma Mae gets the locals together to raise money to hire a lawyer to defend Jesse and Zeke, as they work out a deal to open a carwash on an unused property. Things are going well, so well, in fact that The Man takes notice and shuts them down (some BS zoning laws), to which Emma Mae and a couple of others resort to robbing a bank...they get away, use the money to get Jesse and Zeke out on bail, but then Jesse ends up two-timing Emma Mae (turns out he was only using her the whole time), to which she retaliates by putting her foot square into Jesse's behind, among other places...

I learned a lot of things from this movie, the first being you don't want to disrespect a country girl with nappy hair, because if you do, she'll have no problem in dishing out a country beating (particularly in working over your jewels, if you're a male). I also learned some new terms, like fender benders...this is used to describe pills that, if you take, and then drive a car, they'll make you crash into things causing you to bend your fender. Also, an `ugmug' is an unattractive person (I think the word is actually a combination of two words, ugly and mug). And if you really want to disrespect someone, you can call him or her `armadillo ugly'...another thing, I didn't realize wearing overalls without a shirt was such a predominant fad in the mid 70s...interesting look. All right, as far as the film goes, it was interesting, but one should keep in mind the cast is made up of inexperienced performers, so a lot of the acting really isn't all that good, but the effort, for the most part, was there, and that counts for something with me. The story moves along pretty well, but it does get bogged down occasionally as a character experiences a verbose, moment of drama meant, I think, to appeal to the audience the trials and tribulations of the disenfranchised African American community. Emma Mae has a few of these scenes, along with another character named Big Daddy, played by Carter. Big Daddy was kind of a weird guy in that he wore traditional African attire, a sheik headdress, full gray bread, mumbles to himself, and had a militant attitude. There's one scene where he speaks about a number of things including the evils of whitey, the ironic plight of brothers killing each other over turf which they don't even own, and the need for African Americans to get up off their collective behinds and take what they can from The Man. Some of the sequences didn't seem to be related to the story, but were fun to watch, nonetheless, one in particular being when Jesse and Zeke were eating crab and hitching a ride, finally getting picked up by some acquaintances. That crab looked nasty, and they were eating parts of it I don't think you're supposed to eat. All in all this was an odd, low budget, independent drama with blaxploitation underpinnings, displaying some pretty shabby acting through and through, but it does feature some effort (in my opinion), along with a bit of heart (or soul, if you prefer), and possibly worth checking out if only to watch the last five minutes when the character of Emma Mae performs her rendition of The Nutcracker Suite...

The fullscreen picture (1.33:1) on this Xenon Pictures DVD does show signs of age, but overall, looks relatively decent and certainly watchable. The audio comes through relatively well, but I'm not really sure what format it's presented in...there are chapter stops, and a number of previews for other DVD releases including Bad Attitude (1993), Black Godfather (1974), Dolemite (1975), Penitentiary (1979), Soul Survivor (1995), and Sweetback (1971).

Cookieman108

By the way, someone was asking about the music played during the final credits...the song, titled Theme from Emma Mae (Long to be Back Home), was arranged by HB Barnum (who also did the scoring for the film), and performed by Keisa Brown, and released as a 45 back in 1976 on the Los Angeles label Marsel Records.

4 out of 5 stars Weird but Fun.......2005-07-16

This movie was a weird one but fun. The acting was not that good but the movie had a meaning to it. Once you start looking at it you will want to finish it out til the end. That fight at the end, that was a good one. That's what one gets when they try to PLAY someone! GREAT CLASSICAL B-FILM.

    Product Description

Ted (Keaton), top salesman at the Bindview sales company, is forced to show new hire and midwest transplant, Jamie (Fraser), the ropes. Jamie's enthusiasm isn't squashed by Ted's cynical and angry personality, but after he fails to make sale after sale, Jamie quickly becomes disillusioned with the big city. When Jamie introduces Ted to his beautiful fiancé, Belisa (Valletta), the hard-bitten salesman falls hard, and when they begin an illicit affair, the real Ted emerges; losing the bitter edge that made him a great salesman. Jamie continues to fail at the sales game and Ted's guilt over the affair prompts him to feed Jamie his own sales leads to try and keep him afloat. Even as Bindview begins to lose profitability, Ted becomes increasingly focused on Belisa and his sales start to suffer. It is only when the company falls victim to a hostile takeover, that the ingenious con is revealed.
