Peter Sellers's third go-around as the prideful but bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau is funny enough, but this 1975 Blake Edwards revival of the Sellers-Clouseau connection is a little weak in comparison to predecessors The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark (both made in 1964). Costar Christopher Plummer actually gets some of the most interesting screen time as a retired cat burglar whom Clouseau accuses of getting back into the business. (If it sounds like there might be a To Catch a Thief vibe mixed in here, you're right.) Herbert Lom is hilarious as Clouseau's psychologically eroding boss, and Clouseau's ritualistic collisions with valet Cato (Burt Kwouk) are great examples of Edwards's delicious comic timing. --Tom Keogh

This motion picture, is not included in the MGM collection, it's a need to get it, to complete the PINK PANTHER series.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good for a sequal !!!!.......2007-03-26

Hey, for the third installment of the Pink Panther franchise. It's not that bad. The acting was excellent as ususal. The plot is a simple one. The famous Pink Panther diamond is stolen once again and all clues are pointing to that rouge jewel thief "The Phantom". Clouseau is brought in to solve the case. But there is one problem, this time "The Phantom" aka ,Sir Charles Lytton really didn't do it this time. So, now both Closeau and Lytton must race to figure out this mystery before they are both killed.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not the best.......2007-01-23

One of better movies from Jacq Clusoe series, although not the best. There are some dull moments but also plenty of laughs supported by Peter Sellers antics. Recommended for "Pink Panther" series funs but also for those who love European comedies in general.

    5 out of 5 stars it's a no brainer.......2007-01-20

Never did understand why the powers that be did not include this title in the DVD Boxed Set. For the serious collector of Peter Sellers or Pink Panther, this movie is a must have. Personally, I think it's the funniest out of all of them. Purchase with no fear my humor loving friend.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Sellers returns in fine form.......2007-01-18

Although most critics prefer the older Pink Panther movies to this one, I think this one delivers the Peter Sellers humor just as well and with greater frequency. It moves much faster than the earlier movies and is family friendly.

Hoodwinked fuses the classic fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood with the crisscrossing storylines of film noir--pretty ambitious stuff for a computer-animated cartoon. The police cordon off Grandma's cottage and an amphibious version of William Powell named Nicky Flippers (voiced by David Ogden Stiers, M*A*S*H) begins interrogating the suspects: A Little Red in bell-bottoms (Anne Hathaway, Ella Enchanted), a Wolf turned investigative journalist (Patrick Warburton, The Woman Chaser), a snow-boarding Granny (Glenn Close, 101 Dalmatians), and a dimwitted would-be Woodsman (Jim Belushi, Curly Sue), each of whom have very different reasons for ending up in that cottage living room. The visual style of Hoodwinked mixes a clunky, video-game look with an homage to the stop-motion puppetry of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and other Rankin-Bass holiday specials. While sometimes awkward, there are also moments of surreal beauty, such as when a depressed Red wanders through a field of blue and red flowers--and moments of lunatic comedy, such as the Schnitzel song, which is irresistibly bizarre. The Shrek-style pop-culture references grow annoying, but the left-field goofiness of a yodeling goat points toward a far more distinct and delightful comic world. Also featuring the voices of Anthony Anderson (Kangaroo Jack), rapper Xzibit, and an especially witty turn by Andy Dick (NewsRadio) as a deceptively cute bunny rabbit. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

So you think you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Don't be too sure. . . . One of your favorite fairy tales is turned upside-down and inside-out in what the L.A. Times called "high-energy, imaginative entertainment." With irreverent storytelling, spunk and wit, Hoodwinked delivers a comedy caper for the young, the young at heart and everyone in between. When the police arrive at Granny's cottage in the woods to answer a domestic disturbance call, it looks like just another open-and-shut case. But Red, Granny, the Big Bad Wolf and the Woodsman are not your usual suspects, as they have their own dark secrets, wily deceptions and conflicting accounts of the crime. Together, they must put aside their differences and find their own original twist on Happily Ever After in this "raucous, genre-busting, animated gem (Entertainment Weekly, The Must List)."

1 out of 5 stars Wow- this was a BORING, uninteresting stinker..........2007-06-19

...and it looked good from the trailers. So I finally rented it. Watched the first 30 minutes and found it too ANNOYING for some reason & just hard to keep any interest in. So I stopped it & did other stuff. The next day, my cousin says, come over and we'll watch a movie. I said I had Hoodwinked and she said to bring it over because she wanted to see it. Again, after 30-40 minutes, we both looked at each other and stopped it. We both agreed it was annoying, uninteresting and definately NOT funny. If you want to laugh, then just rent Fletch.

Super job on this film - congrats to the writers, producer, director and actors on it. One of the better of it's genre I've seen in recent years. Much better than most. Clever writing, wonderful voice acting, great comedic delivery, timing, and superb plot twists.

This was one of the best animated features I've seen (and I've seen almost all of them). Great to watch w/family, very fast paced, witty and well done. Bravo, gang! Cheers for a wonderfully produced family film. A+++

5 out of 5 stars Witty! Clever! We watch it all the time........2007-05-25

I love this movie. My son has a bunch of kids movies, and when he wants to watch one together this is always the one I want to put in.

It's got grown up humor, but not "adult" humor, so you don't have to worry about your kid repeating something awful. I hear a new one-liner or witty remark every time I watch it. Without exception I laugh out loud when we watch it. It's got quick, humorous dialoge, and good music (catch myself singing little snippits of tunes around the house). All this and my kid (5 when we got it, 6 now) thinks it's hilarious, too.

Most of the characters are really likable and well done. There is one character I wish they'd have cast with a different voice, and Little Red Riding Hood could have been designed a little cuter or softer, but the movie's good features make up for the little shortcomings.

Really funny. Can't decide which character I like best -- probably the wolf, but the goat's pretty darn funny, too.

5 out of 5 stars WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE.......2007-05-08

WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE I HAVE EVER SEEN & FOR BEING ANATMAED IT IS UN-BLEAVABLE IN SO MEAN WAYS

5 out of 5 stars Maybe even more fun for parents.......2007-03-27

As have many parents, I've watched hundreds of kid's films. Many are insufferable to sit through. This is so fun, so fast-paced, so laden with plot twists and colorful characters and quotable lines and NO scary stuff or sex jokes... it's a rare treat for children and adults alike. I consider Hoodwinked simply the best animated feature of the past ten years.

Mel Gibson set aside his art-house credentials to star as a crazy cop paired with a stable one (Danny Glover) in this full-blown 1987 Richard Donner action picture. The most violent film in the series (which includes three sequels), it is also the edgiest and most interesting. After Gibson's character jumps off a building handcuffed to a man, and Gary Busey (as a cold, efficient enforcer) lets his hand get burned without flinching, there is a sense that anything can happen, and it usually does. Donner's strangely messy visual and audio style doesn't make a lot of aesthetic sense, but it stuck with all four movies. The DVD release includes production notes, Dolby sound, theatrical trailer, optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, optional French soundtrack, and optional English, French, and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

    Description

With over seven minutes of previously unavailable scenes, the director's cut of Lethal Weapon is a long-overdue present for fans. Riggs' solitary homelife and the tragic loss spurring him in a reckless disregard for his own safety now come into greater focus. We see that recklessness is new scenes underlining the differences between the two cops. Murtaugh, just 50, needs reassurance about his skills at a firing range. Riggs, not caring if he sees another birthday, coolly walks into a schoolyard sniper's field of fire. All the humor and adrenaline that made this original an entertainment milestone are here, too. No scenes have been removed. But new action and new insight are now included. Include yourself in the excitement.

5 out of 5 stars A good old movie transfer to HD-DVD - BUY IT........2007-05-07

It's a good try and transfer of old movie to HD-DVD good action and interesting topic.

3 out of 5 stars All in favor say 'die'!.......2007-02-27

It may well have appeared fresh and exciting back in 1987 but Lethal Weapon is soaked in so many 80s clichés it's sometimes hard to take it seriously. First of all we have the maverick cop on the edge who doesn't play by the rules but gets results. Second we have him being teamed up with a by-the-book partner. Third...it's all about drugs. There are countless more, from LA setting to the Vietnam vet psycho stuff and even all the way down to the deep voiced trailer guy saying stuff like 'They'll have to work together even if it kills them' and so-forth.

Opening with long travelling shot of LA, complete with an agonizingly 80s credit front, Lethal Weapon begins with the death of a porn actress, high on cocktail of white powders, who thinks she can fly. But what she really gets is a 20-storey descent to the parking lot, the fast way. I first saw Lethal Weapon on TV in about 1990 and this scene had pretty much everything cut from it, the nudity, the drugs, it's amazing people actually made sense of films back then.

Anyways, before I go off on a tangent rant, the dead girl is actually the daughter of a crooked banker involved in heroin smuggling. LAPD Sargeant Roger Murtaugh is his old pal and takes the case, but not before being teamed-up with renegade, suicidal cop Martin Riggs. Together 'They don't make the rules, they break them' and 'They'll have to survive each other first' and 'blah blah blah!' Honestly, the wafer-thin plot of Lethal Weapon has truly perished with time. Bad guys smuggle heroin, cops kill them for it. There are multiple, totally absurd elements such as Riggs being a Vietnam vet despite only being about 30 at the time (meaning he was 19 when the conflict ended), the rolling around with the gun firing a gun blindly but still hitting targets is hard to swallow, the martial arts showdown seems to come out of nowhere and belongs in a different film, kids recognizing tiny Special Forces tattoos from a significant distance and the contrived death of Murtaugh's daughter's never seen boyfriend.

In fact, a LOT of this film is contrived and rather ramshackle. Shane Black IS a great writer but this film is just too underdeveloped. We never get to see the heroin or learn anything about how the villains do business. There's not any decent amount of mystery solving or police procedure and there is absolutely NO reason at all for the film being set at Christmas. There is no festive, yuletide atmosphere or Xmasy themes. Plus, with the film being set in LA, Christmas is all blue skies and sun. It adds nothing at all.

What makes Lethal Weapon watchable however are the characters and the silly banter between them. Riggs and Murtaugh really seem to click with each other as pals and I think it's this that kept the sequels coming rather than the need to tell another macho action story set in LA.

And I do wish that Michael Kamen never used those damn saxophones! The score can frequently be quite jarring and annoying whenever those things start screeching. I have the limited edition score CD, but skip those tracks whenever I stick it on. But since Kamen has died in recent years I will spare him my rant over his misjudged score.

Unwisely regarded as a classic, Lethal Weapon only exhibits how to weave 40 million clichés into a macho action movie. The humor is what I like best, I can leave the rest to stagnate back in the 80s, where it really belongs.

The HD-DVD sports a great 1.78:1 1080p transfer with Dolby Digital+ sound. Extras are limited to a trailer and deleted scenes. Warner should really have issued the Director's Cut on HD. But still, it's a great step-up from the SD DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Bad hair day Mel? .......2007-02-27

I chose this film thinking it would be Mel Gibson when he was still good. Yes, he was good, but I'd seen it many years ago, when I was still at school, and didn't remember. Until I was watching the film and thinking that I'd already seen this before. I had an inkling that I'd already seen it, when the girl jumped off the building (I think I had a moan about why she had to be almost topless the first time round) and then Mel gets out of bed. I definitely remember that scene! Damn.

The thing about watching Lethal Weapon now, is that it's been either spoofed too many times or it's been copied so many times. Almost every 80s cop movie is like this. Good cop, bad cop. Neither wants a partner. Then they realise they can't work without each other. And it spawns some mediocre sequels. In the case of the spoofing, see Loaded Weapon, with Emilio Estevez and Samuel L Jackson.

There was nothing particularly stand out about this film - apart from Mel's hair, which was just awful - I liked the pairing of Mel & Danny, and I liked the albino Gary Busey, playing a bad guy, who doesn't even flinch at his arm getting burnt with a lighter. Ouch. The guy about to commit suicide from the top of the building and then having Mel's character handcuffed to him was the stand out scene for me, not including the opening scene.

The reason I'm only giving this 2 stars (which isn't going to go down to well with some reviewers) is because if I'd seen it when it originally came out, I probably could have given a higher rating. But we've seen it all before these days, and yes, it may have been a brilliant movie then, but not so much for me.

For me, I would like to see another sequel to this. Maybe Mel could grow his hair again? I mean, there is another Indiana Jones on the way, and another Die Hard. Lets revive Lethal Weapon shall we? You're never too old, as Harrison Ford is proving and Mel and Danny are both younger. They could still do it. Couldn't they? Maybe Mel could save his reputation.

Most reviewers consider this a classic, but in my case, it was worthy of a watch, but I don't remember being that impressed by it the first time round. (So much so that I didn't realise I'd already seen it!) If you saw it the first time, relive the happy memories, and watch it on HD, cos it amazing. (Bearing in mind I did see it on VIDEO, so anything is better than that.)

    4 out of 5 stars THE example of 80's action-buddie-cop-comedies; a "B+" .......2007-02-19

I don't think I can say very much that hasn't already been said, so I'll try and keep this brief: the "let's not take things too seriously" tone of this movie (helped largely by the musical score and the quick humor that runs throughout) are, for me, what make this movie so watchable - and rewatchable. I've seen the movie dozens of times now and it just doesn't get old. The action itself is perhaps starting to get a little quaint by today's standards, but it's the aforementioned tone and humor of the movie (aided by the perfectly cast Mel Gibson and Danny Glover) that still give it vibrancy and make it so enjoyable. This really is Mel Gibson's defining role in that he can play both the dramatic and comedic parts so well. If movies were defined solely by the number of times I've stopped to watch them while channel surfing, 'Lethal Weapon' would be at the top of my list - it's very entertaining and just a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Lethal Weapon turns 20!.......2007-01-24

LETHAL WEAPON turns 20 this year and in fact,it was one of 1987's highest-grossing films next to DIRTY DANCING,THREE MEN AND A BABY,PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES,FATAL ATTRACTION and MANNEQUIN. In this Warner Bros. action-packed film,Roger Murtaugh(Danny Glover) is a husband and a father of three who returns to the force after an extended hiatus. He is first seen soaking in his bathtub, then retreats downstairs to the kitchen with his beard shaved down to a moustache. He is far from enthused about his partner-in-crime,Martin Riggs(Mel Gibson). Martin is a mentally disabled individual who is a "lethal weapon". Martin often thinks he's a firearm of some sort. This behavior frequently aggravates Roger. But,they end up making a great team and becoming best buddies. Watch for a special appearance by Gary Busey(The Buddy Holly Story) as the criminal who's wanted. Darlene Love is Roger's wife Trish. Love is a singer as well who had a hit in 1963,(Today I Met)THE BOY I'M GONNA MARRY. Director Richard Donner reteamed with Gibson and Glover for three sequels released respectively in 1989,1992 and 1998.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Movie Kuffs........2007-02-13

I forgot how funny this movie is kinda of a ferris bueller/fletch comedy thriller keep you on the edge of your seat while laughing too what a great movie. supporting cast is wonderful in this film you'll just love it.

    It's PG-13 For Lauguage , Action Violence.

2 out of 5 stars Time travel back to the early to mid 1980's.......2007-01-04

Now exceeding 20 years, this 1980's movie may attract
viewers on account of the big-name actress Ashley Judd in
it, although in reality she's shown for less than 90
seconds in the entire movie, and this in an action
sequence, showing a paint shop getting drilled with
machine gun fire. In that respect, KUFFS will be a major
disappointment for those expecting Judd to be at the
    center stage.

In reality, the protagonist is the Jack Nicholson wannabe
or hopeful of the time, Christian Slater as well as the
city of San Francisco. Much like the other movie, also in
San Francisco, (TWISTED with Ashley Judd), that city is
prominently shown in various aspects, namely the world
reknowned bridge, and some surroundings of the area,
    parks, hills, etc.

The story is not entirely serious, which is a benefit,
considering most people going to the movies want to relax,
so in this sense, the picture is successful, if not for
the not tasteless but redundant nudity involving Slater
and the lovely and young Milla Jovovich, playing his girlfriend.

The movie, from a visual point of view, works extremely
well, with many varied, sharp, colored and interesting
streets, buildings and filming locations chosen. Anyone
not having done tourism in that city or area will benefit,
much like that which is the case in another movie, showing
Raleigh, NC, "Kiss the Girls" with Morgan Freeman, for example.

There is a focus on the clothes people wear, obviously, as
the characters seem to only wear pastel-colored items that many
for some were trendy at the time, as made clear from other
movies, such as Miami Vice, also from the 80's, for example.
Ironically, in the opening sequence, the bad guy has his mug
shot stenciled onto his pastel T-Shirt, yet is covering his
face with a scarf, to avoid being later recognized. How
his victims would fail to remember to police the image seen on his
T-Shirt, to track him down, is less understood.

The weak spot, clearly, is the music, as it is had considerably
aged and seems considerably unsophisticated. In reality, the music may
or may not be a liability, considering often there's a
discrepancy in tastes and musical experience among the
audience, regardless of age, who themselves are very differnet
    from one another.

A a recurring jingle is obviously inspired from the one heard
on Beverly Hills Cop, a big commercial success at about the
    same year KUFFS was released.

Overall, KUFFS completely wasted Judd's acting talents, as
only 90 seconds were shown. On the other hand, for those
wanting a light-hearted time travel back to the early to
mid 1980's this is not a bad place to start.

    5 out of 5 stars Kuffs.......2006-01-15

This is a great Mid 90s movie.

5 out of 5 stars Sadly Overlooked Action Adventure Comedy.......2005-01-16

Christian Slater's character reminds me of a young Jack Nicholson, who replaces his brother on the Police Force after he is murdered. I was surprised that he didn't become as popular as Tom Cruise after this film was released in 1992, but he had a few personal issues during the 90s that stalled his career. I think he's a better actor than most people realize, with much more talent than making below average movies like "Broken Arrow".

    4 out of 5 stars 7 out of 10.......2004-08-18

Kuffs is a highly enjoyable Christian Slater film. Great narration. Very quirky ideas. Clever at a lot of times. Great acting by Christian Slater. There is a certain "Johnny Depp" quality about Christian Slater when I saw this film. He pulled it off great. Great comedy. Very good lessons taught here also. Consider the film as a smart comedy about being stupid but lucky. A couple highest points in this film were the gunshot wound lesson and the subtitles while being duct taped. There are other great moments. It is very unpredictable and fun movie to watch. This movie has solidified me as a great Christian Slater fan. Although it was made in 1992, I find it hard to believe that I haven't seen films like this. That is amazing. This kind of thing just tells me that Hollywood is releasing the wrong kinds of films. Kudos to Bruce Evans for witty direction.

Together, they must put aside their differences and find their own original twist on Happily Ever After in this "raucous, genre-busting, animated gem (Entertainment Weekly, The Must List)."

...and it looked good from the trailers.

As have many parents, I've watched hundreds of kid's films. Many are insufferable to sit through. This is so fun, so fast-paced, so laden with plot twists and colorful characters and quotable lines and NO scary stuff or sex jokes... it's a rare treat for children and adults alike. I consider Hoodwinked simply the best animated feature of the past ten years.

if you liked classic 80s Chase, like Vacation or Three Amigos, heck, i'll even throw in Deal of the Century.... then you might think this movie really makes you gasp while reaching for your pelvic region... but then again... you could enjoy Curley with his crazy greying hair trying to relive the glory of City Slickers. but unlike slickers, this movie's "one thing" that every man must realize is that Chase couldn't even save this one, baby.

5 out of 5 stars Cops and Robbersons is better than Citizen Kane.......2004-11-16

When you talk about the classics, you will now have to add this Chevy Chase gem to your discussion. Simply put, this film is the greatest work in the history of American film. People were laughing so hard in the movie theater that it was frightening. A fat woman in the back row rocked back, broke her chair, and dislocated two vertebrae. She refused medical treatment just to see how this hilarious epic ended!

Further, some people in the front row were so visibly shaken by the amazing chemistry between Chase and Palance that they started to light their seats on fire!

The fire department then arrived to try to put out the flames, but they just started laughing at Chevy Chase's brilliant physical comedy!

Luckily, the movie ended just as the flames were becoming uncontrollable! I missed some of the credits due to this large fire, but it was all worth it.

Cops and Robbersons is a must see! IT will go down as one of the classics...Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Godfather, Cops and Robbersons

    4 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2003-01-09

I am a huge fan of both Chevy Chase and Jack Palance. This movie is worth-while, for sure. It is Chevy Chase at his best. One of the funniest scenes was with the garage door opener. Right before we watched the movie, we had a new opener installed and had some interesting experiences of our own. So we could relate. I do agree it was almost like a typical National Lampoon movie, but that's what makes it so good. I have seen better Chevy Chase movies, but I've never seen one that I didn't like. Buy it! If you are a true Chevy or Jack fan, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I wasn't! Get it today!

2 out of 5 stars It's Chevy Chase. What more can I say?.......2002-04-26

"Cops & Robbersons" strongly reminds me of a Griswold Vacation movie. In fact, I kept expecting Chevy to call his kids Rusty and Audrey. The only difference is that the family in this film don't get to go anywhere. They are stuck at home with a couple of cops as live-in visitors. The police are doing surveillance on a criminal who lives in the house across the street.

Chevy is up to his old "Boy, am I a clueless ... or what?" routine. What's extremely frustrating is the fact that nobody around him gives it any thought. Look at these two examples: First, he hides the two cops in the closet (don't ask!) and his wife comes downstairs. She asks what the noise is coming from the closet. He states that it is the cat. Then the daughter comes down the stairs holding the cat. What does his wife think about that? Nothing. Another example is when Chevy asks his neighbor (who is under surveillance) if he could use his bathroom. While his neighbor is on the phone, Chevy sneaks upstairs and cuts open the guy's mattress to the point that springs are actually popping out. What does his neighbor think of this? Nothing!

I think you get the idea. The people in this film are so completely ignorant that the comedy falls flat. To make it worse, Jack Palance is downright vicious. I was absolutely stunned at something he stated to one of Chevy's kids. This is supposed to be a family movie. I can't tell you what he said because it violates Amazon's review guidelines against obscenity.

The only reason that this film gets 2 stars instead of 1 is the presence of Dianne Wiest. She appears as if she is in a film all her own. She is caring, charming and feisty all at once. However, I would only recommend this movie for diehard Wiest fans or for people who enjoy watching Chevy Chase act really dumb for 90 minutes.

3 out of 5 stars Drop Dead Funny.......2000-12-24

Any fan of Palance or Davi will love this movie. Chevy Chase fans will be treated to a revamped version of his "National Lampoon" character, but played with a slightly more restrained hand. Robert Davi provides his usual stellar performance as the dangerous and disturbing next door neighbor, and Palance provides a hysterically funny twist to the movie; at the very beginning, you will see him feeding the dead fish in his office. It only gets better. This film is surprisingly realistic, delightfully cheesy, and the perfect Saturday night entertainment. Enjoy!

I was in this movie as an extra while working for the Milwaukee Police Department, so was a friend of mine. As most know it was filmed in Milwaukee and in Toronto. It was a lot of fun and I made $110.00 dollars for the day.

During that day I broke up an actual fight between two crew memebers. If I recall, I believe it was between the vehicle rangler and stuntman.

In one scene Charles Bronson was to drive around the access road of the Milwaukee County Courthouse in an unmarked squad car and pull up at the front door. He had to then exit the vehicle and walk into the court house with a purpose. It had to be shot several times. I recall that after the first take he would have to back the squad car back around the access road to the starting mark. During that process he hit the curb several times while backing and voiced his discussed with several explitives...

    What a great day!

I later saw the movie and thought it was not the greatest, but if your a Bronson fan its a must to see...at least once.

3 out of 5 stars Best of the 3 movies.......2001-07-19

This is the only "Family Of Cops" movie you really need. I wonder if the sequels were planned at this point, because the performances seem to have more juice here. The action scenes are pretty good, especially the one in the woods. Bronson's involved in a couple of shoot-outs, but they're practically identical to similar scenes in the other two movies. (-Notice in particular the shoot-out by his character's house; arms stretched out in trademark "Telefon" aiming position, shooting at a car.) Forget about the two uninvolving ones that followed, and stick with this one.

3 out of 5 stars Ok Bronson Film.......2000-07-31

This Bronson film was ok, not his best work though, rent one of the Death Wish movies to see Bronson at his best. I used to Enjoy Bronson films quite a bit, but he needs to stop. The man is way to old, and its hard to believe that a man his age, would be running around shooting people. He Belongs in a wheel chair and a nursing home, not making movies anymore, sorry Mr. Bronson its time to Retire. Watch the movie if you absolutely love Charles Bronson!

Not a bad movie but I mainly wanted a copy because I was an extra on the set and appeared in a few scenes. Charles Bronson chatted with us between takes and seemed to be a nice man.
The outdoor scenes were filmed in High Park, Toronto, Canada with many local actor and extras.

In Family of Cops III, Charles Bronson plays the aging, paunchy patriarch of a... well... family of cops. The point of this series seems to be the contrast between the family's hard-as-nails attitude toward crime and their warm, loving treatment of each other, but the writing is so cliché-ridden, and the acting so dominated by smug, ham-fisted machismo, that the most mediocre episode of NYPD Blue or Homicide: Life on the Street must be 10 times more compelling than this. There's a main story line about a murder within a prestigious banking family and a subplot about a young buck who feels responsible for the death of a fellow cop. There isn't a shred of intelligence, originality, or suspense in this entire movie. Does Bronson really have enough of a following to warrant making three of these? --Bret Fetzer

As a big Bronson fan I don't know what to think of these "Family Of Cops" TV movies. Did they really HAVE to make three ?. I don't think they had to, but unfortunately they made them anyway. The first one was o.k., and more than enough, but three is stretching it too far. -The old copper he portrays here is simply not interesting enough. Personally, I'd much rather have liked to see Bronson play two other final characters in two other final movies, than have this dull cop come back twice. (The father/daughter-relationship between Bronson and Dana Delaney in the TV movie "Donato & Daughter" would've qualified a lot better as a series of TV movies, actually.) I'm afraid absolutely nothing of interest to most Bronson fans happen in this series, and it's a bit of a shame he chose to end his acting career with this dud and not with a bang. It's not that I mind Bronson doing a bit of serious drama and less action, especially at his age, but the combination doesn't work here. Also, the "F.O.C." movies suffer from the same problem many TV series and movies today face; they have too many characters, and not enough time to care about them.

4 out of 5 stars The chemistry between Powell and Loy is still strong, but Nora is in danger of becoming Lucy Ricardo.......2007-06-07

Sycamore Springs is Nick Charles' home town, where his parents still live. It's small town Americana, MGM style. We half-way expect that the murderer, when Nick catches him, will turn out to be Andy Hardy. In this, the fifth of the Thin Man series, Nick and Nora (William Powell and Myrna Loy) journey from New York to celebrate his birthday with his parents. Dr. Charles is a medical man who disapproves of Nick's line of work as a "policeman." He had hoped his son would become a doctor and that they could work together. Nick's mother understands and loves them both and bustles around. And Nora, determined to show her father-in-law what such a smart and successful detective Nick really is, begins to leak the story that Nick is really in Sycamore Springs to solve an important case. "Nicky always says there's a skeleton in nearly every closet," Nora points out to her mother-in-law, "and if you rattle it hard enough something always happens."

It's not long before a number of things happen, including a young man shot by a sniper at the elder Charles' front door, an intense attempt by a shady character and his wife to buy or steal a second-rate painting of a windmill and the death by shotgun blast of a disturbed recluse. Nick has to deal with war plants and war plans, twenty-year-old secrets involving illicit love and an unexpected baby, innocent or not-so innocent theatrics and the impact of some of his street-wise friends on the respectability of his parents. All the way, the need to show his father that he is worthy of respect even if he is just a "policeman" keeps things humming. The conclusion, with everyone gathered around, the true motivation for the murders uncovered and the killer unmasked, ends satisfactorily with his father grinning in approval and a button on Nick's vest popping with pride, just as Nora predicted. This being wartime, Nick's exertions have had to be fueled by apple cider, not martinis.

The pleasure of this movie rests squarely on the personalities of Powell and Loy. They fit into being Nick and Nora with the grace and affection of old friends. That's how we see them, as actors and as Nick and Nora. They're good company and fun to be with. While the mystery itself may not be great shakes (the rationale for the murders seemed to come a little out of left field), the actors are a crowd of familiar faces and predictable and welcome personalities. We get Harry Davenport, everyone's favorite father or grandfather; Leon Ames; Donald Meek, small and always flustered; Edward Brophy, Donald MacBride, one of the master's of the double-take; Lloyd Corrigan; Helen Vinson; Lucille Watson and Anne Revere, such a fine actress whose career was ruined by the Hollywood witch-hunts of the late Forties and early Fifties. In a part that lasts probably no more than 20 seconds we even have Moose Malloy, I mean Mike Mazurki, in a barbershop.

So what could make a fan of Nick and Nora Charles queasy? Here's a hint. Says Nora outside a pool hall to Sycamore Springs' police chief, "There's a man here. I want you to arrest him." "What for?" says the chief. "Does it have to be for something," Nora asks with genuine innocence. Is this the smart, sophisticated Nora from the first two Thin Man movies? Not even close. With The Thin Man Comes Home, MGM has nearly finished the job of turning Nora Charles into an adoring wife and cutely innocent early version of Lucy Ricardo. The affectionate banter between Nick and Nora remains, but little is left of Nora as at least a semi-equal partner in her husband's adventures in murder and crime. Nora's role is to provide comic relief so that we can smile indulgently at the situations she gets herself involved in. I watched the movie with a smile because Powell and Loy are so good together. But in a sad way I also felt I was watching Nora Charles' death by the safe, middle class conventions of Hollywood.

The DVD transfer looks just fine, clear and sharp. There is a Robert Benchley short feature and a cartoon as extras.

5 out of 5 stars "That's alright. Pool rooms are so informal.".......2007-05-26

Nick and Nora are off to Nick's parents in Sycamore Springs in this fun outing for our favorite mystery duo. Nick has taken to apple cider in anticipation of his birthday visit hoping for a pat on the back from his disapproving dad, who wanted Nick to follow in his footsteps and become a doctor.

A good screenplay from Frank Capra's favorite writer, Robert Riskin, in collaboration with Dwight Taylor, has the couple becoming involved in another crime while being a bit more domestic visiting the folks. Everett Riskin produced this fun MGM entry in the series, directed nicely by Richard Thorpe this time. While it doesn't have the frantic snap of some of the other entries, the charm and witty byplay between the screen's most fun couple remains to make this one very enjoyable.

The mystery involves a painting of an old windmill Nora buys as a birthday gift for Nicky, much to her chagrin. It will turn out, however, to Nora's delight, to be the key to two murders that will force Nick into action and show his dad (Harry Davenport) just why he should be proud. There is the usual detective work from Nick and, of course, the suspects all gathered together as the murderer is exposed. But it is the fun getting there which makes "The Thin Man Goes Home" so much fun for fans.

Nora has some fine moments telling Nick's dad and mom (Lucile Watson) about Nick's capture of "Stinky" in an effort to impress them. It's also great fun as Nick rests in a hammock wearing his old high school uniform and reading detective magazines while Nora fruitlessly attempts to set up a lawn chair. The most fun, however, occurs when a solo Nora, tracking down a suspect, starts a brawl in a pool hall.

There is a solid supporting cast as always, led by Gloria DeHaven as the dramatic young Laura Belle Ronson. Donald Meek, Leon Ames, Anne Revere as "Crazy Mary," and lovely Helen Vinson round out the fine cast. It is nice to see Vinson, especially, as film buffs will remember her tender role in "I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang."

Will Nick finally get that pat on the back from the old man and pop a button on his vest? You don't want to miss Nora getting a spanking from Nick while you find out. William Powell and Myrna Loy will forever hold a special place in the heart of every film buff for these wonderful films so full of entertainment. Don't miss Nora's wild dance with a sailor as Nick tries to ditch her in this one. That alone is worth the price of admission.

W.S. Van Dyke, director of the first four "Thin Man" films committed suicide, February 5, 1943 at the age of 53.
Richard Thorpe is the director of this fifth film in the series.
Our mystery sleuths, Nick (William Powell) and Nora (Myrna Loy) have taken a train to Sycamore Springs to visit his mother (Lucille Watson) and his father (Harry Davenport). While in town, Nora was way too insistant on buying a windmill farm scene painting which belongs to someone else by special order. The saleman, Mr. Crump (Donald Meek) gave in and let Nora have it. When the owner of the painting, Helena (Helen Vinson) came in to pick up her painting, she was furious about the sale. Her husband, Edgar (Leon Ames), who is eager for the painting too, swears, "Somebody's going to pay plenty for that picture before we're though".
A nighttime, a young man, Peter (Ralph Brooke)comes to visit Nick Charles. Within seconds, a mystery person from outside quietly shoots the man at the doorway.
Also in the cast: Lloyd Corrigan, Wally Cassell, Gloria DeHaven, Jane Green, Connie Gilchrist.

Special Features: Theatrical Trailer, 9-minute short "Why Daddy", MGM Technicolor cartoon "Screball Squirrel".

Leon Ames also appears in the last film, SONG OF THE THIN MAN (1947).

5 out of 5 stars "Just keep on doing what you're doing; I'll have the cocoa in a few minutes.".......2006-08-01

10 years later, Nick and Nora Charles (and Asta) are back for a delightful fifth installment in the Thin Man series. This time, on Nick's birthday, the Charles are visiting Nick's parents in the rural, small town of Sycamore Springs. But all is not well between Nick and his dad, Dr. Bertram Charles (Harry Davenport). Nora is distressed to find out that Dr. Charles patronizingly looks down at Nick's "policeman" profession, and she asks Mrs. Charles if there are any cases lying about which Nick could solve to impress his father. If he could just make his father proud once, Nick'll pop a vest button. Well, no sooner asked than granted. One evening, a man is murdered at the Charles' front door and Nick and Nora find themselves suddenly embroiled in another humdinger of a murder mystery. Yes, this is a bit of a departure from the usual cosmopolitan settings in which we routinely see the Charles. However, it doesn't take long for Nick to start feeling right at home again as he strives to crack the case, despite the number of corpses piling up. En route, he unearths several small town secrets and uncovers a murderer and a spy ring. But is it enough to make a father proud?

True, Nick and Nora Charles, formerly the lives-of-the-cocktail-party, may have settled down a bit (after all, they have a brat now), and Nick now imbibes cider rather than martinis. But, even after all this time, Powell and Loy's dazzling chemistry is still very much intact. As usual, the murder mystery is secondary to the charming play between Nick and Nora. In fact, the mystery isn't even introduced until 30 minutes into the picture, as director Richard Thorpe first has the film leisurely wallow in an amusing train escapade, several introductions of quirky character actors, Nora's virtuoso breakdown of the case of Stinky Davis, and Nora's epic cage match with a lawn chair.

But even with the advent of the mystery element, the film still takes time to indulge in Nick and Nora frolickings. There's a little scene with Nick and Nora and her frustrated attempts to introduce his birthday present, a painting of a windmill from Nick's childhood. There's Nora's amateurish shadowing of a "suspect," with Nora, in turn, being followed, which all climaxes in a pool room brawl. And what about Nick foisting off his wife onto a partnerless sailor who longs to dance at a charity event? Jitterbug, anyone?

I get a kick out of how Nick Charles's urbane sophistication seems to strand him in the face of his father's low expectations. Dr. Charles never got over the disappointment of Nick not following him in the doctoring biz. A nice touch early on, which whets the viewer's appetite, is the scene of Nick ineptly fixing an endtable, only to have it fall apart and bushwhack him, leaving him prone on the carpet, which is exactly where his father finds him. Nick has to insist that Dr. Charles take a sip of his cider drink to convince him he isn't inebriated.

The dialogue as usual is smart and snappy; the plot is convoluted but is ably enlivened by two leads in full rapport with each other. The character actors, a great staple of the series, once again sparkle and divert. Lucile Watson as Mrs. Charles, Harry Davenport as Dr. Charles, Donald Meek as the pawnshop owner Mr. Crump, Gloria DeHaven as the overly dramatic Laura Ronson, Anne Revere as Crazy Mary, and Anita Sharp-Bolster as the suspicious Charles' housekeeper all do very credible work. The Thin Man Goes Home may not have the fresh and seminal quality of the first Thin Man, but at this point, any Thin Man installment is like comfort food or hot cocoa, brimming with warmth and nostalgia. This fifth offering is actually my second favorite of the series, after The Thin Man, and mostly because of the family dynamics brought in. The underlying theme of the film is Nick trying to make his father proud of him, and I'm on board with that.

I'm not one for suggesting that people spend their money frivolously, but the Thin Man series is that rare case where every film is worth its weight in gold. So my recommendation for folks thinking of purchasing a Thin Man movie: just go ahead and buy the entire box set collection. Trust me, if you own one Thin Man, you'll want to own the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Nick & Nora Get a Little Too Domestic on Account of the War........2006-03-27

"The Thin Man Goes Home" (1945) was the 5th movie in the "Thin Man" franchise and the first directed by Richard Thorpe, from a screenplay by newcomers Robert Riskin and Dwight Taylor. "The Thin Man Goes Home" is a convoluted murder mystery with a long list of diverse suspects, as usual, but it is otherwise a departure from the previous "Thin Man" movies. It isn't set in an urban environment, but in an idyllic small-town America that anticipates the Eisenhower era with its apparent purity. There are sordid dramas among regular folk, but criminal underworld characters are absent. And Nick and Nora Charles no longer lead glamorous, exciting lives. They seem dowdy, in fact. It's as if hard-boiled fiction met "Leave It To Beaver" -a decade too early. I can only guess that the reason for the change was Hollywood's desire to present an idealized vision of middle class Americans during World War II. Nick is even on the wagon, drinking apple cider from his flask! It's ironic, since movies were getting markedly less sentimental and more hard-boiled in the 1940s, while the "Thin Man" series is becoming more domestic. Go figure.

"The Thin Man Goes Home" finds Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy) visiting Nick's family in the town where he grew up. While Nick has his heart set on rest and relaxation, Nora hopes that a mystery will turn up for him to solve, so that Nick will have the opportunity to prove himself to his disappointed father (Harry Davenport), who wanted Nick to be a doctor like himself. As if on queue, a stranger collapses dead on their doorstep. So Nick goes about looking for clues, stirring things up in the tranquil town of Sycamore Springs -where people don't like things stirred up.

I didn't like "The Thin Man Goes Home" at first. There is no glamour and no gangsters. The Charleses are a comfortable middle-aged couple -or rather Nick is comfortable in his sweatshirt and Nora looks like an absurd decoration. Poor Myrna Loy wins my Worst Wardrobe Award for her frizzy hairdo, horrible house dresses, and the ugliest suits imaginable. But "The Thin Man Goes Home" is not a bad mystery; it's simply dated. It's WWII propaganda, insomuch as a comedic murder mystery could be. Nick and Nora Charles have left the high life behind to become Everyman and Everywoman, even traveling in coach on the train, which seems inexplicable given their wealth. Nick uncovers international espionage, not just murder for passion or money. "The Thin Man Goes Home" is a film for a certain time and place. It doesn't really hold up today, but that, in itself, is interesting on some level. And the mystery is reasonably well-written, which is more than I would expect from the 5th film in a 6-film series.

The DVD (Warner Brothers 2005): "Why Daddy?" (9 min) is a comedic short film written by and starring Robert Benchley. He plays Joe, a man who goes on a radio quiz show to match wits with a child contestant. "Screwball Squirrel" (7 min) is a cartoon in which a smart aleck fox torments a dopey bird dog. The gimmick is that the animals know that they're performing in a movie. There is also a theatrical trailer for "The Thin Man Goes Home". Subtitles are available in English, Spanish, and French.
