) before passing it along for my brother-in-law to enjoy. I hadn't recalled the series as being so *intense* and downright disturbing at times. My most recent viewing of the entire series was a real eye opener ... and heart pounder! Maybe one needs to pass the age of 40 to recognize the depths this story actually imparts ...
Highly recommended for young and old alike! :-)
Roar- complete series.......2007-05-07
A great product- interesting perspective on the Roman expansion of Europe- Love the pagan and old religion themes and how they fitting harmoniously with ancient christian practices. I only wish they had made more seasons... that 13th episode comes... and it's sad when it is all over!
Céad Míle Shudders.......2007-04-17
As an Irish person it was difficult to overlook one particular historical fact while watching this series - the Romans never invaded Ireland. There were trading links between Roman Britain (present day England, Wales and southern Scotland)and Ireland but that's all. The Romans maintained that they could conquer Ireland with one legion, but they never put this claim to the test! And I really wish non-Irish people would stop trying to "do" an Irish accent - there are many Irish accents depending on location, but actors always manage to invent some new cringeworthy one. I found myself watching this series in the same way that I'd watch a horror movie I don't want to watch but can't look away from -with a sense of horrified fascination. For pure enjoyable Irish/Roman/Greek hokum, I much preferred the episode of "Hercules, the Incredible Journeys" where our hero ends up in Ireland and helps defeat an attempted Roman invasion.
Good Series but short lived........2007-03-09
Started out as a excellent series. However they did not plan too well for a longer tenure.

Description
The Classic Profile of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa
This is the masterful portrait of the late 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, the great Tibetan Buddhist master known as the Black Hat Lama. His line of successive reincarnations has its origins in the 13th century when it was the first to identify tulkus, reincarnations of Buddhist teachers. He is recognized as the embodiment of the teachings of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, one that traces its source through Tibet's greatest teachers Milarepa and Marpa to India's Naropa and Tilopa all the way back to the Shakyamuni Buddha himself.
Features rare footage of renowned Tibetan Buddhist lamas Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Kalu Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
Filmed on location in Sikkim and North America, with archival footage from France
Customer Reviews:
Stunning.......2007-04-15
The best movie about HH XVI Karmapa on the market, full recommendation for everyone - buddhists and non-buddhists.
A stunning documentary.......2007-01-10
This is a beautifully composed film with some amazing footage of many revered Tibetan lamas. As I had read Mick Brown's excellent book 'The Dance of 17 Lives' just before watching this film, it was particularly rewarding to actually see the story of the 16th Karmapa on screen and have the whole story brought to life in this way. Even though the film focuses on Karmapa, I also very much enjoyed seeing the footage on Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Kalu Rinpoche. A rare treat, and a highly recommended film.

Outstanding.......2007-04-10
This was the first time I watched a Wagner opera. I have been listening to the music for years, but I felt I was missing out by not actually seeing a performance. I have yet to be able to see a live performance, so I ordered this DVD. Now I know why Wagner is so loved. The seriousness and drama of the performance was unlike anything I had ever seen. The singing boggles my mind, and the music is simply beautiful. I know very little about opera, but I know this: this breathtaking.
Our uncivilized culture is unaware of the true beauty German culture is capable of. Yes, Beethoven and Bach are wonderful, but Wagner is totally unique. Peter Hoffman, who plays Lohengrin, is the quintessential Germanic man - blonde, strong, stolid, and honorable. His performance was excellent. The woman who played Elsa was too old, but her voice is awesome. I have always wanted to go to the Bayreuth Festival, and I will. Wathcing this performance made me feel as if I was there. I highly recommend this.
The best Lohengrin, yet insuperable.......2007-03-25
When one of my friends suggested me to introduce into the Wagner world (during the VHS good old times)through Lohengrin, he knew what he was advising a newcomer and he did it right! I just loved the music, nothing was better than that for me in that time (10 years ago or maybe more) and I loved Wagner's music, then was Tannhauser, Fliegende Hollander, The Ring (exciting Walkyrie), Tristan und Isolde, Meistersinger, Parsifal...and every discovery was a trip to excitement.
So this Baeyrouth version was my first Lohengrin, and it has remained unsurpassed. I've tried to follow other versions (now in DVD and CD), and I yet I have not been able to find another Elsa as MS Armstrong's and another Ortrud as MS Connell. They are credible, they are fabulous, their voice match their character and their wonderful lines. So I have to say to Mr Roar's Telramund and Mr Hoffman's Lohengrin, and of course, the chorus, masterful, brilliant, overwhelming. So, for someone who is hesitating which version to get, I would advise this one. A must in your collection.
A great Lohengrin.......2007-02-23
I purchased this DVD after getting Nikolaus Lehnhoff's interpretation of the opera on Opus Arte and being somewhat disappointed with it. While the Opus Arte has its moments, the heart of the drama is here. One is never in doubt that this Lohengrin loves his Elsa but their love is doomed (and he is cursed) by his need to keep his name unsaid. The magic associated with the fearful question, not an inability to communicate, is at issue and the drama of the opera is heightened considerably by the tension of their predicament. Singing and acting vary from very good to excellent. Orchestra and chorus are very fine. Sound and picture quality are excellent - and Act III was NOT out of sync on my copy. I agree with all the positive other reviews listed. This, indeed, is the preferred Lohengrin.
5-plus stars if there could be........2007-01-31
I've got both DG Lohengrin with Peter Hoffmann in the title role. I would only say that age has a lot to do with a heldentenor's voice.
This earlier performance shows Hoffmann's exceptional voice in its prime. What a pity - but that is how things go for this special breed of tenors.
Yes, the chorus in this Bayreuth version is far superior to Levine's MET chorus. So is the general accoustics: Leif Roar is also better in this version, though dramatically I find it hard to convince myself that this Telarund is a tragic character: Roar's is an outright base creature.
Elizabeth Connell shines out as the wicked character Ortrud. She subsequently changed her fach to soprano, and the move is right, judging from her timbre here. She also has the edge over Armstrong in that her stage presence in this performance is immense.
The other great stage presence is of course Peter Hoffmann's knight of the Holy Grail. If you do not like Wagner (or do not know anything about Wagner's works), you would do no wrong by getting this Lohengrin as a starter. Hoffmann conveys everything in the drama - through his voice, his acting, and of course, his looks.
Nowhere could you find a better portrayal of Lohengrin that is faithful to the script to the last detail, and made very much alive onstage.
Bravo, Hoffmann!
THE BEST LOHENGRIN AVAILABLE.......2007-01-03
This is the best Lohengrin available. The Bayreuth forces under the direction of Woldemar Nelsson are excellent. The Bayreuth chorus is splendid throughout, and Lohengrin is an opera where the chorus performance is vital. The orchestra plays superbly except, perhaps, in the Prelude of Act I, which sounds less opulent than oither performances because of the fast tempo adopted by Nelsson. Peter Hoffmann is much better here than he was in the Metropolitan production. Karan Armstrong may have some vocal problems, mainly in the most dramatic moments of the opera, but her weaknesses convey the frailty of the character. In this aspect, she is a much more believable Elsa than Eva Marton, whose weighty voice does not suit the role. Leif Roar is a very good Telramund and so is Siegfried Vogel as the King. Elizabeth Connell is a surprise as Ortrud, both as a singer and as an actress. I did not expect so much from her in this role, but she is excellent. Of course, she cannot match the best Ortrud I have ever heard: Christa Ludwig in Rudolph Kempe's Lohengrin, available in CD (nor can Roar match the Telramund of Fischer-Dieskau for Kempe). But who can equal these two singers in these parts? Bernd Weikl is excellent in the small role of the Herald. Good image quality and superb sound. Highly recommended.

Lohengrin.......2007-01-04
Vocally this is a most satisfying performance. All the voices are clear and the acting is good. I do miss the swan however.
The Vocalists Are Not Always Perfect But The Opera Is Brought Thrillingly To Life In This Production.......2006-11-08
To start with, James Levine conducts masterfully, with spaciousness where needed and exciting drama in other places. He is certainly one of the best operatic conductors working today. The staging, lighting, costumes, the whole production is fully captivating. The DVD quality is very fine, good picture and sound.
Other reviewers have mentioned that the vocalists are not always at the top of their game, I concur. However having this opera on DVD with their masterful characterizations is much more persuasive than it would be to just hear this on a sound recording. Peter Hofman plays Lohengrin really well although Domingo in a competing DVD is his superior in voice. The other singers do their parts proud, Eva Marton makes a very good, not always great Elsa. The other two main characters played by Leonie Rysanek as Ortrud and Leif Roar as Telramund are both phenomenal actors and singers.
The production is large and spares no expense in it's tradional staging, all the big set pieces come off wonderfully, the direction is top-notch. If you're a Wagner newcomer, this DVD of Lohengrin or the Placido Domingo version are both wonderful choices to view this most accessible of Richard Wagner's grandiose works for the stage.
A different take on this production.......2004-10-14
I was very excited to come across this Met performance by one of my favorite dramatic sopranos, Eva Marton. Wonderful dramatic gifts aside, I was quite disappointed and saddened by the amount of wear and tear the voice exhibited at this point by such a gifted actress and musician. She put tears in my eyes and touched my life when I saw her in a concert video singing "Sola, perduta, abbandonata" from Manon Lescaut. It is a rarity to have as much emotional depth as she had in that recital. I also hold the opinion that she attacks the role of Elsa with so much vocal force that it sounds as though it would be more fitting for Isolde. I believe that Cheryl Studer hit the nail more squarely on the head with a more lyrical approach to the vocalism in the Abbado-Vienna production, although Studer did not have Marton's depth of character. I am completely amazed at the choice of Telramund, Leif Roar, who made up for his apparent inability to sing the exposed high notes of the role by snarling and literally screaming them out in a melodramatic manner here, as well as in the Vienna State Opera venture also out on video. Levine and the Met Orchestra exhibit exceptional, intense playing here. In my humble opinion, the orchestra's comtribution was on of this production's saving graces. Peter Hofmann's voice as Lohengrin is crystal clear, youthful and as powerful as necessary here, but I prefer Placido Domingo's (in the Vienna production) warmth and color, although his German is un-idiomatic. Also what was up with Levine's shameful casting of the Herald, whose wobble was so great that it was impossible to discern his pitch?? One should be focusing on the drama at hand and not worrying about someone's attention-grabbing lack of technique. Shouldn't we expect more from the Met, with such a supposed standard of excellence? I am glad I bought this on Ebay and didn't pay full price.
Another Triumph For Eva Marton!!!.......2004-05-22
As Elsa, the lovely Miss Marton stole the show, despite attempts by the fading glory Leonie Rysanek to upstage her. I found Rysanek's voice as Ortud a bit caustic at times & shrill the rest of the time. Miss Marton maintained her composure, elegance & grace throughout. She brought the innocence to the role so needed when performing Elsa. Her voice was flawless. A true genius of a singer! She allowed her art to make her statement rather than pander to the crowd. The Lohengrin looked the part but fell short vocally. The music is glorious. The supporting singers are adequate.
Slight Hiccup.......2004-04-24
I must admit slight disappointment after watching this DVD. Let's start with the plus's: Levine's conducting, staging and chorus efforts are admirable. Hofmann's portrayl of Lohengrin, while coarse in some places, sounds great, Roar as Telramund also sings and acts well. Now the not so good moments: Marton, as much as I admire her vocal prowress, simply sounds too heavy for Elsa. Her acting is also too stifled and contrived. Rysanek as Ortrud, as intensely as her acting is, simply does not have the voice for her part. Her high notes, as secure as she places them, just do not hold much weight as compared with perhaps Waltraud Meier. Marton should have reprised Ortrud from the previous staging and another singer performed Elsa. Otherwise, the supporting roles are well filled. The other DVD version of Lohengrin with Domingo from the VSO also lacks a good Ortrud. Can we not perhaps have Meier's performances released? They must be lurking somewhere.................

A Must to Have!.......2007-01-09
It is just mind blowing to see how all those cats have interacted with each other and the actors!! Never mind the story...although it is not bad but that's not the reason why should watch the movie. It is the footage which is incredible.
Roar doesn't.......2005-09-07
I love animals, big cats in particular and was very excited after watching the special on this movie. The movie wasn't a movie, it was more like a home movie with no plot of any kind. It would have been more interesting to watch a documentary on how they lived with these animals.
Simply Awesome.......2005-01-21
Roar is a perfect treat for a Bigcat Lover. Don't mind the high price, 19.99, it sure is worth it.
But the DVD could have been made more interesting if they had provided more footage of "movie in the making". And the movie would have rocked if they have showed the fight interaction (if any during the filming) between the Lion & the Tiger.
Nonetheless, ROAR is just one of a kind movie...Go for it.
Simply amazing.......2004-10-18
This movie breaks all the barriers when it comes to interaction between the BIG CATS and humans. The scenes in this movie are simply breath-taking yet at the same time very heartening to watch especially when the big cats show their love and affection for the actors in the movie.
Its an ideal family movie one which everyone will love to see especially you're a big cats fan of lions-tigers-jaguars-leopards etc.
I saw this movie when I was a child in 1989 and last year when I found it was available on DVD, without hesitation I bought it...for more visit www.roarthemovie.com

A perfect learning experience for your kids.......2006-10-26
As parents of a 2 year old boy, 4 year old girl and a 7 year old girl
we are always looking for DVDs that educate and have age appropriate
content for our children. "Bees Buzz & Lions Roar: A World of Animals
Just for You!" is perfect for our kids in that it presents a variety of
animals from around the world, each matched to a letter of the alphabet
and a variety of beautifully illustrated stories. Each section of the
DVD is colorful with excellent animation and illustrations and the
narration quality and sounds are top-notch. Unlike other DVDs that
present too much too fast, this DVD is perfectly paced allowing our
kids to quickly process each part in to their memories. They later
recall the alphabet, animals and stories easily and accurately when
away from our TV. We have found that watching it often, either on the
road or at home, helps reinforce the learning experience. We are always
exploring the Spanish version bundled on the same DVD allowing our
family to learn another extremely valuable language. We recommend this
DVD highly to anyone with kids of all ages 1-100!
Good for children of all ages.......2006-10-24
Both my 1 year old and 3 year old daughters love this DVD. They love the graphics and the voices used. It is rare to find a DVD that entertains both of them. I highly recommend it!
Professionally produced DVD - Incredibly entertaining.......2006-10-13
My 3 year old son can't get enough of this DVD! The animations are beautifully rendered and colorful which adds to my son's delight and they're all about animals which he loves. Professional voice overs and music add to the production value of this title. The layout, use of icons, colors and geometric and organic shapes are well executed. It is obvious that a lot of thought went into the production of this title and is appropriate for children of all ages. It is a bilingual DVD (English and Spanish) which is great as it exposes my son to another language in an entertaining setting. Well designed with animal sounds, fun facts, animal alphabet, stories and more. This DVD has merit and educational value while being entertaining for my son. That is not a combination that is easy to find. I highly recommend it and I don't take the time to write many reviews. We look forward to the next title.

Description
It was the weapon no one wanted, until it fell into the wrong hands. It blasted its way into history as the favorite of history's most infamous gangsters. The Thompson submachine gun was the most powerful, fastest-shooting weapon of its time. Built for the military and the police, they resisted the new gun, preferring to stay with ones they were familiar with. Soon, though, they learned to regret their decision, for the "Tommy Gun" proved its worth in the hands of men like Al Capone. TOMMY GUN is the definitive video history of this historic weapon. Retired FBI agent John Wallace remembers what it was like to face down criminals armed with this overpowering weapon. Author Tracie Hill, the world's leading expert on the Tommy Gun, reveals why it was snubbed by law enforcement and embraced by criminals. And film clips and real-life footage speak of the mystique and power that surrounded the weapon that helped put the roar into the '20s.
