Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
Richard Donner's 1978 epic about the Man of Steel showed how a film about a superhero could be a moving and romantic experience even for people who long ago gave up comic books. Beginning on the icy planet Krypton, the story follows the baby Kal-El, whose rocket ship lands in Smallville, Kansas. He is found there by a childless couple and raised as the shy Clark Kent (the young Kent is played by Jeff East). The film is perhaps most touching in these sequences, with expanses of wheat fields blowing in the wind and with a young man who can't figure out what part in destiny his great powers are meant to play. The second half, with Reeve taking over as Clark/Superman, is bustling, enchanting (the scene in which Superman flies girlfriend Lois Lane--played by Margot Kidder--through the night sky is great date material), and funny, thanks largely to Gene Hackman's sardonic portrayal of nemesis Lex Luthor. --Tom Keogh

Description

These adventures were the first time that Superman (and his alter ego Clark Kent), Lois Lane and Perry White had been seen in animated form since they were immortalized in the iconic Superman short films of the 1940s. In addition, this series marked the animation debut of Jimmy Olsen and classic Superman villains like Lex Luthor and Brainiac. This animated Superman was forerunner show that lead to all the subsequent animated superhero programming.

3 out of 5 stars Pure Superman.......2007-06-28

This is a totally retro superman cartoon. It's not as well animated as the theatrical Flesher cartoons. Also the plots are a bit outlandish (ie aliens and wizards). But it is fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, The Best Has Been Released!!.......2007-06-24

It's about time they released these classic cartoons. The current cartoons are worthless. The New Adventures of Superman was my favorite growing up. The simple plots along with the music made these the classics that they are. I'm sure they will release the remaining episodes as well as Superboy,Aquaman, and the Justice League. I taped these cartoons off of Boomerang a few years ago. They were ok except for the commercials and the fact small portions were omitted from the shows. I also bought the Super Powers VHS from Amazon. Release all of these fine shows from the vault--they have been collecting dust long enough!!!

5 out of 5 stars Filmation's New Adventures of Superman - Season One!.......2007-05-03

"Superman! Rocketed to Earth as an infant when the distant planet Krypton exploded. And who disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet fights a neverending battle for truth, justice and freedom with super-powers far beyond those of ordinary mortals!"

That's how announcer Jackson Beck opened this classic show from 1966. The opening scene showing Superman smashing meteorites to the show's very '60s jazz main title theme still looks cool.

Following the '40s Fleischer Superman (made for theaters) and the '50s Adventures of Superman (first done as a movie then a TV series), Filmation's New Adventures of Superman (1966) was the first Superman done specifically for television. Paid a sum of $36,000 per completed half-hour by CBS (who struck a deal with DC Comics to create the show), Superman also was the then-little studio's first major TV deal.

The legacy of the more revered Fleischer Superman shorts was not lost on Filmation. "The Fleischers did, as far as I'm concerned, the definitive one. So much so that we actually managed to hire some of them to work for us," producer Lou Scheimer said.

In additon to comics faithful character designs, and effective yet limited [compared to today] animation, The New Adventures of Superman also featured the voices of Fleischer Superman's Bud Collyer and Joan Alexander (alternating with Julie Bennett) as the animated Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

As a result, the series was a breakout hit. So much so Filmation was given a bonus and a 2nd season where the show expanded to "The Superman Aquaman Hour of Adventure" adding heroes Green Lantern, Hawkman, Flash, the Atom, Teen Titans, and Justice League to the lineup.

Due to the ongoing Siegel/DC/Time Warner battle for Superboy copyrights, the Superboy episodes originally sandwiched between the Superman episodes are not included in this set. Despite this, I still recommend the set solely on the strength of the thirty-six 6 min. Superman eps that are included.

The New Adventures of Superman is a 2-disc set featuring all 36 Superman episodes from the show's first season; Full Frame (1.33:1) video; Dolby Surround Stereo English audio; Closed caption; plus the following Special Feature: "Superman in '66" - Featurette explores how the '60s era influenced the character of Superman and led to his Filmation debut on this groundbreaking show.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Superman Animation.......2007-04-08

I loved these as a kid and can't wait to revist these adventures!
This will be a great addition to an animated collection to join the ranks of the Cartoons from the 40's and the great series from the 90's! I know they've had to take out the Superboy cartoons that originally ran with it (probably due to conflicts WB currently has over the rights to the 'Superboy' name) but regardless this will be great to for years to come!

2 out of 5 stars New Adventures of Superman.......2007-04-03

The plans for New Adventures of Superman disappoint me a lot. The Superboy cartoons from the original show have been left out altogether, according to the latest online news I've read.
As well as that, they'll only include the 36 Superman cartoons from the first 18 episodes (ie first season) of New Adventures of Superman.
Another 8 episodes (with 16 Superman cartoons and 8 Superboy cartoons) were produced in 1967 for the Superman Aquaman Hour of Adventure. (I'd hoped for years to see all of that released in full).
A further 8 two-part Superman stories and 8 more accompanying Superboy stories were produced for the Batman Superman Hour in 1968. (I'd like very much to see all that released in full, making the following complete: Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Superboy, and Aquaman's guest star spots of Justice League, Teen Titans, Atom, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Flash).
The Shazam live action series is another long awaited DC character I'd love to see released in full.
I'd also like to see the other seasons of Superfriends & Super Powers Team too. We got two sets two years ago, which I enjoyed a lot, leaving me keen to see the many other incarnations of the show:
Superfriends (1973 one hour stories)
All-New Superfriends Hour (1976; four stories with Wondertwins, guest stars, whole team, team-ups)
World's Greatest Superfriends (1980)
Superfriends (1981-83 six min shorts; 3 per show; 3 seasons)
Superfriends: Legendary Super Powers Show (1984)
Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (1985)

Consistently solid with some major developments, the fifth season of Smallville kicks the characters off to college, but not before finishing the cataclysmic disaster that ended the fourth season. With Chloe transported to the Arctic Circle and Kryptonian supervillains in town, Clark (Tom Welling) is in the Fortress of Solitude meeting Jor-El (voiced by Terence Stamp). He gives up his powers, but to get them back will cost him the life of someone he loves.

The even bigger development is that Clark and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) finally give up their dalliances with others and become an official couple. That means the other girls in Clark's life become fifth and sixth wheels, so Chloe (Allison Mack) reveals the secret she's been keeping from Clark and becomes a best pal. Super-gorgeous Lois's (Erica Durance, now part of the opening credits) banter with Clark loses its bite without any sexual tension so instead she meets Arthur "AC" Curry, a fantastic swimmer who has an eye for Lois and an accusing one toward Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) and LutherCorp. He's not the only one; Clark's Central Kansas A&M professor, Milton Fine (James Marsters) hires Clark to help him on his project, an expose of LutherCorp. Lex is the pivotal character of the season. His relationship with his best friend, Clark, now history, Lex has a Christmas Carol-type dream in which he sees himself in a law-abiding--and happy--life. (That episode, "Lexmas," also has some amusing interplay involving Clark and Chloe.) Undeterred, he decides on a life of power and dives into a state senate race against Jonathan Kent with gusto, though a fanatical Lex supporter turns the race into a literal one for life and death. Lionel Luthor (John Glover) also makes a strong comeback in this season, pulling unseen levers and making everyone wonder exactly what he knows.

There's some fun. "Thirst" is a tribute to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and another DC Comics character, Cyborg (Teen Titans), appears. Carrie Fisher plays Chloe's editor at The Daily Planet, and "Exposed" reunites Schneider with former Dukes of Hazzard costar Tom Wopat, and the two go peeling out in a vehicle. But things come to a head in the series 100th episode, when Jor-El's prediction comes to pass and splintered relationships end up leading in unexpected directions. Then in the season finale's cliffhanger, Clark has to face three of his enemies. DVD features include commentary on two episodes and a half-hour examination of the 100th episode, from writing through production. --David Horiuchi

Description

An astonishing season of destiny! Clark Kent now carries a full load of classes at Central Kansas U., but that's not all he carries. He carries the full weight of his - perhaps the world's - destiny. "We call this season Superman in Training," series co-creator Alfred Gough says. "Clark is going to accept his destiny." During this exciting pivotal season: The Fortress of Solitude rises. A spaceship mystery unfolds. A dark tragedy - one even Clark's powers can't prevent - strikes. These and more key elements of Superman lore fall into place.

5 out of 5 stars Could NOT turn it off.......2007-05-23

I loved it! For a TV show the FX are amazing. I enjoy the story line even though its not reality its great entertainment. I got lost in the series and I cant wait to get swept away in the 6th season as soon as it comes out.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to the series.......2007-05-19

The overall storyline of Season 5 is the best so far in the series. There are a few cheesy episodes that could have been done without, but for the most part, fans of Smallville will enjoy the fifth season.

5 out of 5 stars Season 5.......2007-05-16

What I liked the most about this season was the fact that Chloe has now become a much more important part of Clark's life. The friendship has become stronger and much more interesting. The relationship between Clark and Lana has some great moments and some heartwrenching moments(I especially like the opening scenes of the 100th episode). For any Dukes of Hazzard fans (the original series NOT the movie) it was great fun seeing Tom Wopat and John Schneider together. That episode featured some Dukes jokes that I really enjoyed. This season also continues the journey towards Clark and Lex being total enemies. It is overall a strong season despite a few questionable stories.

5 out of 5 stars awesome show!!.......2007-05-13

Tom Welling continues to be gorgeous as Clark Kent. Lex turns even more toward the dark side. Clark meets up with some nasty Kryptonians. Brainiac appears. Clark loses his father. It's action packed, well written and just plain fun to watch.

The arrival of another gorgeous young woman with the initials of LL further complicates Clark Kent's (Tom Welling) life in the fourth season of Smallville, the WB's hip and sexy reinvention of the Superman legend. In this case, it's Lois Lane (Erica Durance), a would-be college freshman who's come to the Kansas heartland to investigate the disappearance of her cousin, Chloe. What she discovers instead is a naked, amnesiac Clark Kent in a cornfield, and things take off from there. Durance doesn't appear in every episode--she was credited as a "special guest star"--but her tough spirit and crackling wit provide a great, non-romantic foil to Clark.

That's just as well, because there's plenty of romantic triangulation--or worse--going on. Clark's former love interest--and his first LL--Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), has returned from her summer in Paris sporting a new boyfriend, Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles), as well as a mysterious tattoo that seems to have something to do with a set of Kryptonian crystals as well as Jason's sinister mom, Genevieve (Jane Seymour). Keeping his relationship with Lana a secret, Jason has signed on as Smallville High's new assistant football coach. What's surprising is that the team's new quarterback is none other than Clark, who's grown tired of hiding his super-strength, super-speed, and invulnerability and wants to be part of the team. But nothing's easy for Clark, and he goes through the prom, a marriage, and fatherhood, not necessarily in that order, as well as his secret being discovered, unknown to him, by one of his closest friends. (On the plus side, he does uncover a cool new power.)

But the key to the season is the Kryptonian crystals. They further deteriorate the relationship between the incarcerated Lionel Luthor (John Glover), and his son, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). Lex may be Clark's best friend, but he reveals more of his dark side in a revelation about his sexual escapades and a split-personality (literally) incident. Lana's frightening dreams actually come to life in a silly Charmed-type episode. Then in the explosive season finale, the main characters are scattered and another meteor shower threatens to wipe out the town.

One of the fun things about Smallville is how producers Al Gough and Miles Millar and their team of writers acknowledge their place in a 70-year Superman mythos (even if Clark is never referred to as Superman). His DC Comics origins receive a nod with appearances by the Flash, Krypto the superdog, and the magical Mxyztplk. And the cast includes not only regular Annette O'Toole (Martha Clark), who had played Lana Lang in Superman III, but guest shots by Margot Kidder (Bridgette Porter) and Terence Stamp (the voice of Jor-El), and the late Christopher Reeve gets a brief but touching farewell in an announcement of the passing of his character, Dr. Virgil Swann.

Extras include 15 minutes with the writing team, a spotlight on Kidder, Durance, and others who have played Lois Lane, deleted scenes, and three episodes with commentary from combinations of Gough, Millar, Durance, Kreuk, Glover and others, but not Welling. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Senioritis does not affect Superman!.......2007-05-30

The fourth season joyfully continues this beloved Superman saga with plenty of the energy and creativity it is known for. Clark Kent, after an exciting opening episode, is thrown into his final year of high school and all that it brings-- a love life with deeper levels, football, and the appearance of a girl named Lois Lane. Mixed with this is an intense growth from the teenager to the young adult--finally, we see the sparks of the someday Superman there, and it's great to behold.

The episodes certainly keep up an entertaining variance (the aforementioned in both light and darker moments, plus truly dark moments from both Clark and Lex). Here in this season comes the true horror of the man named Lex Luthor. However, this balances out well with the jovialty of Lois--you will never see chemistry as sparkling as those between Tom and Erica.

Sadly this does not keep the season out of its fallen moments. Some episodes came off as downright cheesy or merely too desperate to move along a plot, but all in all it generally puts out a bold effort. Plenty of changes in the Smallville saga that are definitely worth a viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Did the producers loose their minds???.......2007-05-28

I have been watching smallville for a few months and only the dvds... so I am not sure how the show has been going past season 4. However, from watching the first two seasons the beginning of this season was just crazy, and not in a good way. I really was just shocked at how they tried the whole sex sells to teens... which me being one offends me that they think the only way I'll watch something is if they have half naked chicks. I think the thing that almost made me skip a whole episode was the girl from season three who could teleport gave him a red kryptonite necklace and teleported him to Vegas to elope. That was not the part that got me it was the fact that after they got married they continued to the hotel room and clark attempted to loose his virginity and at the same time Lana was trying to loose hers with someone else. I was just really suprised they made an episode then they for some reason that is beyond me emphasized multiple times that they were loosing their virginity.

That seemed to be how the first ten or so episodes went, it was like a bad american pie movie. Once they got done with their infatuation of freedom to do whatever story line they could from the big ties of the studio the story really picked up. And the ending was entertaining.

Now please do not be turned off to this season because of me. All I am trying to do is give you a heads up, because this is a shock to anyone who has watched the dvds only and never seen it before otherwise. Because the show did take a 180 in parts of this season. I just hope it is different in season 5, I guess I will find out soon.

4 out of 5 stars Krypto to the Rescue!.......2007-05-21

Season Four of this ground-breaking show proves one thing - not one avatar of Superman before this has done the concept THIS well. At the time of writing, actor Tom Welling is officially the longest-playing Superman in history (be it radio, TV or film), and "Smallville" is well on its' way to being the most revolutionary TV Series ever to be created on a superhero. Nothing else comes close.

There are a few things to look out for in this series, and I've listed both the good and the bad below:

1. Krypto (Super-Dog) : Yes, that's right. Season Four introduces us to Super-Dog (if you're a comic book fan, you'll know that Superman had a pet dog as well as a pet Super-Cat). Krypto is eventually named `Shelby' in his introductory episode here, but he has super-powers (due to meteor rocks, and LuthorCorp testing). The dog itself is played by a reasonably cute mutt, and the storyline was solid here. In fact, the episode `Krypto' ranks as one of the best in this season.

2. Lois Lane : Season Four officially introduced Lois Lane, and thank God for it. Even though actress Erica Durance claims she is about 29 years old, and is playing an eighteen year old, she actually looks about 40 (honestly), which is a bit unsettling at times. Of the entire cast, only Kristin Kreuk is playing anywhere near her real age. With Lois Lane, I expected someone a little more youthful, but Erica plays this character with so much humor and dark comedy (she also has the best one-liners), that its hard to hate her.

3. Countess Margaret Isobel Thoreaux : Lana Lang continues to unravel through the season, as she is apparently the descendant of a 15th century witch in Europe. This plot was a bit nonsensical and its clear the writers had nowhere to go with it. However, at least we got to witness some awesome special effects. However, this gave the makers some license to turn Lana's eyes purple every now and then and display a few powers even greater than Clarks.

4. Jason Teague : This fourth season also marked the debut of actor Jensen Ackles (CWs' "Supernatural") in the role of Lana's new boyfriend Jason Teague. Now Jensen is a really good actor, but you will be shocked at the speed of which they turned his character into a `bad guy' and sent him packing. Alongwith his mother Genevieve (played hilariously by Jane Seymour), this was a waste of some fine talent. In fact, I consider Jensen to be even better looking than Tom Welling, so this was a sore point indeed.

5. More nudity/gratuitous sex : We are reminded early on in this season that Clark and Lana are both virgins (which is kind of unbelievable). Tom Welling has a lot more opportunity here to display some skin (not that his fans are complaining). This is one actor who has refused to strip from the waist down (which is why the most undressed you'll ever find him is with his shirt off). Kristin Kreuk is clothed throughout though.

6. Clark Kent gets Married : Yes, that's right. This season has Clark getting married to resident psycho Alicia, but we're told it doesn't mean anything since they're both underage. Also, the marriage is very quickly forgotten about, which I thought was a little too convenient.

7. The CHINA Episode : The episode set in China (or Chinese sets, whatever) was one of the most beautiful and visually stunning episodes I had seen of this show. I've been a fan since Season 1, but this episode, especially the parts set in the monastery with the martial arts, was just spectacular. You have to see it to believe it.

8. Martha Kent possessed by the spirit of a teenager : Yes, that's right, and she lip-synchs to Ashlee Simpsons' "La La". This is much better than it sounds.

Overall though, I have to say this was not the best season. Despite some new inclusions, many episodes felt like a total waste of time. For every episode that stuck to the storyline, we had two-three episodes that went totally off-target and had nothing to do with Clark Kent or anyone. Hardcore fans must feel cheated! However, Tom Welling has improved dramatically as an actor, though the same cannot be said of Kristin Kreuk who plays Lana Lang. The actress, who showed so much growth in Season 2, looked dazed and confused throughout this mess. The poor script didn't help her either. Also, they REALLY tried hard to get some humorous banter going between Clark and Lana, and I was like WHY did they have to bother.

The other wasted actors were the ones playing the parents of Clark. They have less and less to do each season, and it is a disservice to Annette O'Toole that she is being given such woefully small parts to play these days. The only one I can say who came out truly unscathed was Allison Mack (Chloe) who just keeps growing as an actress. At times, you begin to wonder if the entire show should be written around her instead.

However, the Final Episode of Season Four ties up things pretty well, and Clark gets a grip on his destiny and thwarts Lexs' evil plans. The ending is a bit ambiguous, but nothing that Season Five doesn't clarify. I only hope they give Lana Lang a much meatier role in Season Seven (now that they killed her off in Season Six).

All in All, though this was one of the weaker seasons, there is enough for all fans to love and enjoy. And yes, it is monumental that they finally introduced Lois Lane, at long last.

3 out of 5 stars The loft..........2007-05-11

I would surmise that the writers felt compelled to go with more T&A while forgetting all about the demographics of a diverse audience. I love the potential of the plot line but, I have to watch each show twice ....once to screen it for my 9 year old daughter, and if it meets my approval, a 2nd time so she is able to watch it with me.

Even though we are coming to the end of season 6, as of the date of this writing, I would have felt compelled to kill off Lana before another season under their belts. If the writers have her visit Clark one more time in his loft I may have to take matters into my own hands;-)

Over-all this season teases you with Clarks real abilities yet trounces his 'super-hero' status by having him kicked around by witches and the like....{Geeze, was the writer throwing nods to "Charmed" or just bored and intoxicated at the same time.} What a waste of celluloid.

This season keeps you on track but, if it were a race horse...you would not have bet on it for winning the possibilities of more seasons. I'm glad though, given the horse, that we are still able to have follow up seasons.

Attention writers...take a long vacation..come back re-charged....or at least run a competition for the top 11 best viewer stories. I'm sure we could save half your sesason and for sure one show without Lana ending up at the end of the program in Clark's loft.... Where's my literary gun???

For many fans, the Superman revisionist series Smallville truly hit its stride in its second season, when it shifted focus from traditional comic book conflicts to one of self-discovery for its hero, a teenage Clark Kent (Tom Welling). Fans and first-timers can judge for themselves with this six-disc set, which compiles all 23 episodes and a decent selection of supplemental features. Whereas season 1 focused on Clark using his powers to combat a host of menaces à la the WB's other big fantasy hit, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 2 delved into Clark's past and the extent of his super powers, most notably in the back-to-back "Heat," in which he discovers his heat vision, and "Red," in which red kryptonite in the high school class rings uncorks Clark's less-than-upstanding side. Other plot developments from the season that pull the series in interesting directions include the arrival of Dr. Helen Bryce (Emanuelle Vaugier), who becomes involved with Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), but the season's most significant moment comes during episode 17, "Rosetta," in which Clark learns of his Kryptonian origins courtesy of a scientist, who, in an effective bit of casting, is played by Superman film star Christopher Reeve.

The complexity of the writing and issues dealt with in season 2 marked Smallville as a series with depth and drama worthy of its considerable fan following as well as a second boxed set; fittingly, the supplements in this set are more expansive than on the first one. Producers Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and Greg Beeman and cast members Welling, Rosenbaum, and Kristen Kreuk weigh in on commentary tracks for two episodes ("Red" and "Rosetta"), while a trio of short featurettes explore Christopher Reeves's appearance in "Rosetta," the show's visual effects, and the amusing "Wall of Weird" web page maintained by Chloe (Allison Mack). The extras are rounded out by a handful of deleted scenes and a gag reel. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Smallville - The Complete Second Season.......2007-06-10

Excellent 2nd Season about the growing, future Hero Superman.
Clark develops a new superpower , learns about his biological father Jor-El and his kryptonian heritage and finally comes together with Lana Lang. Unfortunately their relationship didn`t last long `cause of Clarks Secrets and his action during the last episode of the season.
Just see for yourself! It`s worth it.

Superman's "never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way" on television actually did come to an end in 1957 with the cancellation of the Adventures of Superman series, but not before it completed its sixth season, which is presented in this five-disc set along with its fifth season from 1956. Story-wise, the fifth and sixth seasons trend a fine line between the "serious" tone of the first three seasons (which saw Superman take on gangsters, corrupt scientists, and other villains with roots largely planted in reality) and the more outlandish escapades of the fourth season; examples of the latter include "The Tomb of Zaharan," in which Lois Lane (Noel Neill) is kidnapped by Middle Eastern dignitaries who believe her to be their reincarnated queen; "Mr. Zero," with Billy Curtis (High Plains Drifter) as an alien pressed into illegal service by crooks; and "The Brainy Burro," which features a mind-reading donkey(!) used by nefarious types to commit crimes (the latter is one of three episodes directed by series lead George Reeves). Fortunately, there are plenty of exciting adventures on hand as well, the best of which might be "The Perils of Superman" (also directed by Reeves), which harkens back to Superman's comic book and radio serial origins in its tale of a gang of lead-masked hooligans who subject the Man of Steel and his pals to a series of cliffhanger-style dangers. It's hard to say if modern young viewers will take to these vintage escapades--the special effects remain decidedly primitive, and some of the plotlines will challenge even the most imaginative kid's suspension of disbelief--but for Superman fans and classic TV aficionados, there's still plenty of fun to be found in the Adventures of Superman.

Supplements include a charming chat with co-star Jack Larson in the featurette "Superman's Pal: Jimmy Olson," in which the still spry actor is joined by Neill, special effects expert Bob Burns, and several Superman experts (including actor Jim Beaver of Deadwood fame). A barrage of trailers for previous Superman-related DVDs, including Superman Returns, rounds out the extras. -- Paul Gaita

Description

The first super hero created for comic books, Superman leaped from radio to television when Adventures of Superman debuted in 1952. Produced by Robert J. Maxwell (who also produced the radio version) and Bernard Luber (a veteran of Hollywood serials), each episode screens like a classic crime movie, where danger and death lurk in the shadows. Seasons 5 and 6 are the final seasons of this classic TV favorite.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERMAN 5&6.......2007-05-30

Have watched the entire collection of Superman but I believe season 5&6 are the best. It really brings back memories from the years gone buy.

5 out of 5 stars The Last two Seasons of a great show.......2007-05-23

I really enjoyed all the seasons of the adventures of superman, too bad that these are the last two sesons. i'm glad that they decided to put the show on dvd because the new generation needs to know about the best superman show of all, and thanks to George Reeves, Jack Larsen, Noel Neil, and the actor who plays Perry white on making it such a loveable show and making such memeorabale and loveable characters. Too bad George Reeves dosen't know about the classic he made, but he will and always be remebered as the man of steel.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven quality, but still excellent.......2007-03-30

I was disappointed in the quality of some of the episodes in this collection. They looked as though someone had skipped over them during the digital cleanup for DVD. A tad washed out. Other than that, it was outstanding. I'd recommend it to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia never goes out of style.......2007-03-30

There are two types of "The Adventures of Superman" fan. Type one is folks like me who grew up with the original series. By the time I was old enough to appreciate Superman, the show was well into syndication. There will never be a better Clark Kent than George Reeves. I atually liked the Clark bits better than the Superman bits. Why directors persist with the clutzy Kent personified by the Chris Reeves version, I have no idea. Given that seasons 2 to 6 were simpler and less violent plot lines (and as a result somewhat cornier)Clark's character was a lifeline for me. He was never corny. This kept the series' feet on the ground as comic relief (often dreadfully painful to watch) became the norm.

This brings me to type 2. Those who wouldn't identify with the series as part of growing up with it but as Superman officianados, would see the series as a 'time capsule'. This is how I justify to my kids (now grown) my fascination for George and Co.

Regardless of what type you may be, the collection is worth owning. It is beautifully presented, the reproduction is excellent and makes you feel damn good watching it and reliving that period of our culture. From the opening, "look...up in the sky..." I always hunkered down in the seat expecting a good time. Maybe it's me but it still delivers.

My deep regret is that George himself can't appear for the special features.

5 out of 5 stars THIS WAS SUPERMAN WITH CHARISMA!!!.......2007-03-23

This is the DVD for all Superman Fans the world Over!!! When you look at these classic episodes, I want you to take a good look at the Man that portrayed the Man of Steel and keep an open mind. Look closely at his acting and the dual roles and interpretations of Clark Kent/Superman. You will begin to see that this was no ordinary man that was blatantly selected to put on those famous tights and go through the motions for 6 years. No, What makes the Adventures of Superman is the Magnetic appeal of that Great actor George Reeves. He convinced a whole generation that He was Superman! that it was not cool to be a crook. He became the personification of Superman! He is now beloved throughout the World!

The third episode in Lois & Clark's final season is called, "Swear to God, This Time We're Not Kidding," but after what this series so maddeningly put its loyal fans through, Clark Kent (Dean Cain) could be forgiven for interrupting his nuptials to ask, "Look, everyone needs to know that this isn't some kind of evil genius-cloned-amnesiac fake out because there would be a riot." But no, viewers finally got what that they waited for so patiently; Clark and Lois Lane (Teri Hatcher) were married. But the honeymoon was short lived. The writers weren't through messing with viewers. In the next episode, "Soul Mates," Lois and Clark learn0--from H.G. Wells yet (Terri Kiser, reprising his role from season 2)--that they must first break an ancient curse that was put on their love before they can consummate their marriage. Both episodes are redeemed by blissfully romantic resolutions that more than make up for all the other nonsense. Marriage may have taken the sexual tension out of Lois and Clark's relationship, but it did not sap their considerable appeal. As professional colleagues and married partners, they work exceedingly well together, and Cain and Hatcher's palpable chemistry compensates for some not-so-super episodes. Not that the final season doesn't have its keepers. "Ghosts" features a nifty bit of stunt casting with Drew Carrey as a real-estate scam artist trying to scare Lois and Clark out of their apartment and his Drew Carrey Show nemesis Kathy Kinney as an actual ghost. The holiday episode "Twas the Night Before Mxymas" stars Howie Mandel as a havoc-wreaking imp who works a little Groundhog Day magic on Christmas. On a more dramatic note, there is a three-episode arc in which Lois is framed for murder. For Lois and Clark, first came love, then came marriage. As for what inevitably comes next, the final episode concludes this beloved series on an enormously satisfying note. --Donald Liebenson

Description

Lois Lane and Clark Kent saved the best for last. In their final season, they finally get married. There are a few roadblocks along the highway to marital bliss: a worlds-at-war battle with Lord Nor; an adventure-packed encounter with the Wedding Destroyer, who believes folks are better dead than wed; and even wedding-night interruptus compliments of time-traveling H.G. Wells. But before or after the shoes and rice, all 22 fourth-season episodes zing with Lois & Clark's action/comedy blend.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing ending to the season. . . .......2007-06-08

As a long time fan of Lois and Clark, I was really looking forward to this last season, but on rewatching the entire season I realized that I didn't recognize anything past the 1st 4 or 5 episodes. Then I realized why. The entire show is a bit cheesy, and I love it for that very reason, among others; however this season takes the cake. I must have deliberately stopped watching the show to save myself from the inanity of the new episodes.

For closure you need the first disk and maybe the second, but that is definitely where the show should have ended. In the end, as sad as I am to say it, I think that I will preserve my memories of Lois and Clark in the earlier seasons and endeavor to forget that I wasted about 14 hours of my life on this last season.

3 out of 5 stars Though still good, more "bad" elements than previous.......2007-04-12

I had to drop this season a star from what I'd give the others.
I disagree with the posters who thing their marriage (and the end of the "will they won't they" tension) was the downfall of the show. I personally thing they spaced the development of the relationship perfectly (there is only so long that you can drag out the "will they won't they" before it just becomes tedious).

That being said, I thought that this season had far too many overly serious "I love you, Lois" moments between Clark and Lois. The writers seemed to me to be trying far too hard to convey how much they love each other that their relationship lost the playful quality it had in previous seasons. When they were playful, it always seemed sexually related (which resulted in scenes that I'd rather not have my kids watching).

Also (spoiler alert), I thought the first 4 episodes were some of the worst of the entire series.
1&2: I did not like the Kryptonian episodes for a number of reasons. The first and foremost that Superman would be subjugating himself to Kryptonian law, both while on Earth and while Lord Nor is murdering people. Second, the duel in which the oversized Q-tips were used. Why would these things be delivering such a punch to Superman? They were designed to be used on new-Krypton, were the Kryptonians are no more powerful than your standard Earthling. Are they originally designed to turn the loser into a thin red mist? (If it turned out humans had super powers on another planet, would pistols at twenty paces be all that effective?) Their super powers should have been the deciding factor, in which Superman (being more accustomed to them and absorbing more energy) should have easily won. Lastly, the small follow-up that the Colonel who used the kryptonite rocket was arrested. For what? For killing invading aliens when the only other hope for his country, Superman, was already defeated at their feet?

3: The wedding. I just could not stomach that generic god-like "Mike" (obviously an attempt to add some sort of religious element to the wedding without offending anyone).

4. While I liked all the other Tempus episodes (Tempus is just a fun, over-the-top villain that makes - usually - a great episode, even if you have to take that annoying H.G. Wells character along in the mix), this particular one was painful to watch.

I did enjoy the rest of the episodes (well, with the exception of the ghost one). The final was not great, but not as bad as it could have been, given that the promised 5th season was yanked out from under them. I personally would have preferred it end with Lois finding out she's pregnant, despite all the tests, instead of the appearance of the mystery baby.

Lastly, on a shallow note, I hated the short hair look Lois is sporting this season (and half of last).

4 out of 5 stars Lois and Clark progressed the way it should have.......2007-03-28

While it was uneven at times, the final season wasn't that bad.

It began with an epic battle between Kal-El and Lord Nor for the rightful hand of Zara, to rule with her over New Krypton and ended with an infant being left in the care of Clark and Lois Kent.

In between, we were finally able to witness the marriage of the Daily Planet's hottest team in town of Lane and Kent. We traveled with them back in time with H.G. Wells to fix a curse that would have affected their marriage but before there was a chance for them to begin adjusting to their new status as Mr. and Mrs., Lois was set up and framed for murder. And that was just for starters.

The rest of the season followed the intrepid reporters and newlyweds through their first year of marriage and all the adjustments that it requires. It also gave us more insight into who Superman was and how much Clark still didn't know about his Kryptonian heritage.

The feel of the fourth season was different from the previous three. Not because the writing wasn't as good (for the most part), but because Lois and Clark were different. They were no longer working only partners, but married partners and the dynamic of their relationship changed. It had to.

The weakest episode of the season was "Bob and Carol and Lois and Clark". It was the one episode that I fast forwarded through during the first and only time I watched it.

And while "Lord of the Flys" ("Would you mind? I'm on the clock here.") and "Battleground Earth" are high on my list of favorites along with "Swear to God, This Time We're Not Kidding" and "Lois and Clarks", my most favorite is "Soul Mates".

It was a good season over all but I can't help but wonder whose baby might have been left with Lois and Clark at the end of "The Family Hour".

Zara and Ching come to mind.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-03-19

As a superman fan I watched the whole series in a week and I am working also. I finally got to see them got married and have kid!!
The whole season was everything I ever asked for.
The only missing thing was the special futures. I belive there could be more to it then just a chronology.

5 out of 5 stars L&C 4th Season.......2007-02-21

My wife & I both enjoy this series. I like the Superman stuff & she likes the gushy romance junk, er...stuff. It is a nice series overall. I wish it had gone further. Maybe a reunion could happen soon.

1 out of 5 stars Possibly Worst DVD Set Production EVER!.......2007-06-05

And not because of the content of the DVDs. The movies themselves are fine; although deep down inside everyone was a little disappointed in Superman Returns. I have purchased and exchanged this set 3 TIMES! First time, not all of the DVDs were functional. Second time, DVDs' special features fiasco. Third time, the DVDs' case was broken and the discs were loose and got scratched. Tired of this, I finally kept the set that I had on hand. However, it's worth noting that the DVDs were out of order in the case, which makes some peoples' complaints about receiving duplicate discs and missing others more plausible.
How could Warner Bros. mess this up so badly? It's Superman for crying out loud!! He is one of their flagship franchises! I have hundreds of DVDs and have never experienced this much difficulty in finding a quality copy of a boxed set. I will think long and hard before buying any more DVD sets from Warner Bros.

1 out of 5 stars Worse than George Lucas.......2007-06-05

So, Warner Bros. sells a defective product, ignores its customers' complaints, then expects us all to pay another $100+ for a "No Kidding, This Time We're SURE It'll Work" edition of a set we already bought? Thanks, but no thanks, Bullwinkle. Wow, how dumb you must believe we are...

5 out of 5 stars Up, Up And Away!!!!!!.......2007-06-04

This is a gold mine for all Superman fans everywhere. Despite the problems this set has been plagued with, it was well worth the wait. Yes, $75 is a bit painful, but think about it this way, you're only paying a little over $5 each per single disc. You won't get a deal like that anywhere.

And the content is top-notch. Reacquaint yourself with a young Christopher Reeve in his heyday, as he bumbles as Clark Kent, yet soars as The Man Of Steel. I had almost forgotten just how iconic these films were. My brother and I saw the first movie waaaaaay back in 1978 (that tells you how old I am), and needless to say, it left an indelible impression on us. But it's only now where I can appreciate it on a different level. Like George Reeves before him, Christopher Reeve had a charm about him which spoke volumes. You couldn't have found a better Superman if you tried (notice the nearly 20-year span in between the two actors). Not just anybody could play this character, but both men ran, I mean, flew away with him, and defined their careers.

And these films have never looked better. All 17 of the Fleischer brothers cartoons from the early '40's are included within this set, and let me tell you, you will cry tears of joy at the beautiful restoration Warner Bros. did on these. (These put the Bosko Video releases to shame. And those were very well done). Other than a few surface scratches, they haven't looked this good since they were originally released. (I'm not THAT old, but I can only imagine the sight of them back then, since they were the first filmed representation of Superman).

I am very well pleased with mine. This whole collection is pure gold. Sadly, for some of this collection's buyers, its become pure Kryptonite. Hopefully everyone will work their problems out, sit back and reconnect with an old friend. You'll forget all about all the money you spent.

Lois & Clark presents a more upbeat world than the one depicted in Superman Returns. In Bryan Singer's big screen version, Clark loses the girl before the credits even begin. In the third season premiere of the ABC series, however, Clark (Dean Cain) proposes to Lois (Teri Hatcher). Before answering, she wants to know, "Who's asking, Clark or Superman?" So, now he knows she knows (yet another difference). In either case, the answer is no...for now. In this episode, Bill Church (Peter Boyle) also informs Bill Jr. (Bruce Campbell) that now he'll be working for good rather than bad--which leaves Superman with little to do. That situation won't last long as the Churchs will soon be tossed in the clink and a new boss will take over Intergang. The Brylcreemed one is back in the business of saving Metropolis from the baddies. Meanwhile, a psychic named Star (Olivia Brown) moves in next door to Lois (and seems designed to add some rather dubious comic relief). Other episode highlights include "Ultra Woman," in which Shelley Long and Mary Gross transfer Clark's powers to Lois, and "Don't Tug on Superman's Cape," which spoofs I Love Lucy, Dragnet, and James Bond--with Hatcher (Tomorrow Never Dies) as "Miss Goodbottom."

Other points of interest: Both Cain and Hatcher penned episodes ("Virtually Destroyed" and "It's a Small World After All"), the title sequence changes in the third episode ("Contact") to reflect Hatcher's new hairstyle, and guest stars include future crime scene investigators Gary Dourdan ("Never on Sunday") and Emily Proctor ("Tempus, Anyone?"). Most importantly, Lois finally gets back to Clark about that little question, setting the scene for next season's super-nuptials. Extras include a sneak peek at the Singer-produced doc, Look, Up in the Sky!, which explores all incarnations of the Man of Steel. -- Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars Only true Lois and Clark fans will love........2007-06-24

Season one was the greatest and all that followed slowly lost the spark. This season has the series almost dead. There are a few good episodes, Dean Cain is cute and Teri Hatcher is hilarious but I recommend anyone new to this series to buy the season sets in order, watch them, then decide if you want to purchase season 3.

5 out of 5 stars I love lois and clark series........2007-02-11

I think the third season is great. (The fourth one is the weaker of them all).

In second season Lois doesn't know that Clark is superman and in the third season she finds out, so the relationship is quite different. I love both second season and third season. I have 1-3 seasons, but I am not planning to buy the fourth one.

5 out of 5 stars Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - Third Season.......2007-01-19

I love it. At the end love still wins. Love is patience and sacrifice.

5 out of 5 stars L & C- Season 3.......2007-01-11

I am a fan of the show and was very pleased with this product. It was high quality and no problems. I have always been happy with anything I purchase from Amazon.com and I knew this product would not be disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Lois & Clark .......2006-11-23

Lois & Clark came along way for married duo for a long time. They're relationship, in real life a lot of people would give anything what Lois & Clark have in real life. They had a lot a ups and downs it was worth it to get them together. Out of all the t.v. shows of Superman shows I seen, no one could do what these could do.

I never have to worry about Dean Cain being typecast as Superman or the Superman curse. He's doing just fine, the difference between George Reeves as Superman and Dean Cain Superman is George Reeves's Superman is a like a Saturday Morning Cartoon show. Have the time when he plays Clark Kent, Jack Larson plays Jimmy Olsen and Noelle Carter plays Lois Lane. They're like playing Ward, Beaver and June Cleaver in Leave it to Beaver. George Reeves and Jimmy Olsen were like father and son, than friends. Dean Cain is playing Superman, he was like a teenager than can't grow up and I saw another side Clark Kent I never seen before. He has feelings, problems and he was scared all the time.

When he was Superman, that he was just like a regular person like everybody else, the show was revolve around Clark Kent than Superman. Dean Cain love playing Clark Kent than Superman, Superman is kind of symbol for good and hope, has to follow truth, justice and the american way. Even though I hated that slogan truth, justice and the american way, they're just words but to me Superman is guy a like to help. Clark Kent has feelings, problems, trips, nerdy, sarcastic, he can say anything he want more than Superman than does and perverted like me. That's the reason, how I admired Clark Kent in the first place. When I was watching Smallville, the relationship of Lois and Lana are kind of the like the same relationship as Lois and Clark. The same was, Lois was trying to get close to Clark, he always leave when theirs danger when they were talking about something important. A lot of times Clark always wanted to tell Lois who he was, never had a chance to. But he did and they're still together. That's the same relationship with him and Lana had in Smallville, but the difference is when Lana found she was a target and nearly got killed by Lex. When Clark went back in time and didn't tell her. That's the reason, why he never tells anybody who he is somebody could be a target or trust. When Teri Hatcher was playing Lois Lane, in a couple episodes she was Clark's Rival, to best friend and girlfriend. Lois Lane was compared to in Smallvlle, as Lana Lanh and Chloe Sullivan. Chloe Sullivan was kind of like Clark's Private Investigating team buddy, just like Lois was in Lois and Clark. Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher are like the Adult Tom Welling and Kristin Kreuk of Lois and Clark.

I keep thinking about what would have been like anybody guest star in Smallville, were about to find out pretty soon.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection........2007-06-22

I got scared when white streaks, crackles and pops, so common to old movies, prevailed in the opening Superman theme song, but they disappear after that. Each episode was clear and flawless.

I couldn't care less that Superman became less violent as the series progressed. I love the touch of humor and "campy" feel, as well as the addition of color.

No true Superman fan should be without these DVDs. They entertain, even after all these years.

4 out of 5 stars Superman--In Color!.......2007-06-04

I just got my copy of Seasons 3 & 4 of Adventures of Superman. Special features include a piece entitled "Adventures of Superman: The Color Era" and another called "Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: The Special Effects of The Adventures Of Superman."

The former, about the series being filmed in color features interviews with Jack Larsen, Noel Neill, Gary Grossman (author of "Superman: Serial to Cereal") and a television historian whose name escapes me. All pretty much agree that it was a shrewd move of the producers to start filming the show in color, and saving the negatives until color television was common a decade later. In the words of Larsen, "Those guys were pretty smart."

The one about the sfx was mainly a profile and interview with Thol Simonson, along with Larsen and Neill. Both cast members were effusive with praise for Simonson, saying they always felt safe, no matter how risky the effect looked on screen. Something I had not seen before is a diagram of the "pan" apparatus and counterbalance that replaced the wires that had earlier suspended Reeves.

Episodes I have watched so far are "The Wedding of Superman," "The Big Freeze," and "Through the Time Barrier." As has been noted elsewhere, these stories are much less heavily dramatic as the nourish early episodes. However, the light comedy is not really campy, just good-natured. Also, Neill as Lois looks quite fetching in her cave-girl outfit in the time-travel story.

In fact, Ms. Neill still looks quite lovely in the new interview footage. She still has those same sparkling eyes and the lovely smile that gave me that first crush on Lois all those years ago.

alright now i'm even happier with the searies now that they are in color you can exactly see what the actors look like. The Third and Fourth seasons rule. My favorite Episodes Is Jimmy the Kid And The wedding Of Superman.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful entertainment for everyone!!.......2007-04-23

The Adventures of Superman entered the color age with this collection. It was one of the first television series using color. I am satisfied with the collection for its stories and excitement. George Reeves delivered as Superman. What a great show for all ages! You will be satisfied with this collection from the golden age of television!

In 1952 Superman flew right into the hearts and minds of the American TV audience faster than a speeding bullet. Though most people were already familiar with man of steel through his comic books, as well as the popular radio show, it was the new medium's Adventures of Superman that transformed our resident Kryptonian into a timeless icon. For many young baby boomers, Superman was the ultimate symbol of truth, justice and the American way. After watching this nostalgic trip back in time it is easy to see why: George Reeves. Reeves is the quintessential Superman. He is kind, confident, smart, always does the right thing and can literally do anything physically. Even Reeves' Clark Kent is cool, even cocky without any of the trademarked shy, clumsy and hickish traits the character has developed over the years. And then there's Phyllis Coates as the Lois Lane. Coates portrayal of Lois is surprisingly one of the stronger female roles in '50s television. She is one tough cookie able to stand her ground against criminals, fight off bad guys and is not afraid to outwardly express herself. Sadly, Phyllis Coates would be replaced by Noel Neill in subsequent seasons.

Adventures of Superman also stands the test of time well as one of the best shows from the early days of television. A lot of it has to do with how the writers, producers and actors approached the making of the show. This first season, as well as the second, were made as if they were making a serious show suitable for kids and adults. Instead of being a kids' comic book show, the episodes have a strong "mini-serial-crime-movie" feel, are very story driven and include loads of elements from the popular film noir style of the 1950s. This is evident in such classic episodes such as the season opener "Superman on Earth," "The Stolen Costume" where Superman has his costume stolen by a burglar, and the tense horror-noir "The Haunted Lighthouse." Also included on this DVD set is the 1951 theatrical release Superman and The Mole Men which later became the televised two-part episode "The Unknown People." --Rob Bracco

4 out of 5 stars Revisiting an Old Friend.......2007-06-04

My son gave me a copy of Season One of "The Adventures of Superman" for Christmas, and I must say it was the best present I've received in a long while. We had such a good time watching favorite episodes. I am a child of the 50's and grew up with Superman while it was still fairly new. My son experienced it on Nick at Nite re-runs, a special time for us both.

Now I have purchased the Season Two set, and the episodes here may be in many ways better than those in the first. A particular favorite is "Panic in the Sky," where our hero has to deflect a meteor as it hurtles towards Earth. Special flying sequences were filmed for this episode that were not used in any other.

A special treat is "Stamp Day for Superman," a special episode that I never saw as a child. While it is a quickie "freebie" made to support the U.S. Treasury Dept., this episode stands up pretty well with the "regular" episodes.

The featurette "First Lady of Metropolis" is a wonderful tribute to Noel Neill, who took over the role of Lois when Phyllis Coates was unable to continue. It is so nice to see Ms. Neill still looking lovely. She still has the "sparkle" in her eyes that made her Lois so enjoyable to watch.

Another favorite episode is "Around the World with Superman." Anyone who is not moved by this story of a blind girl's attempt to re-unite her troubled family just doesn't have a heart.

Thanks to Warners and to my son for helping me capture a sense of my own youth.

Gorege Reeves was the first person to bring Superman to life and did a excellent job at it. I love these serirs and i love the guy who plays Perry White and jack Larsen is so funny. I good part as Jimmy Olsen. My Favorite Episode in the this season is The Unknown People Parts 1 & 2. This is a pretty good tv show.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2007-04-28

I was a child in the fifties and watched superman faithfully. I really enjoyed watching it once again. I think it was more of a nostalgic warm fuzzy than anything else. (It's hard to be objective) I may buy more but if you didn't watch superman growing up, I'm not so sure you would like them as much.
