The Fullmetal Alchemist theatrical feature, The Conqueror of Shamballa, takes place two years after the last episode of the popular broadcast series. Edward Elric has been transported to Earth and is living in Weimar-era Munich with Alphonse Heiderich, a young engineer who reminds him of Al. This Alphonse is working for the Thule Society, a group of Aryan fanatics who hope to cross dimensions to the world they call Shambala and acquire weapons that will ensure a German victory in the next war. Back in the world where the broadcast series took place, a restored Alphonse Elric searches for a way to bring Ed back. He was no one's (including his own) idea of a great actor--one senses that the one Oscar he won, for True Grit in 1970, was as much for his longevity as his talent--but "icon" is an apt description for John "Duke" Wayne, who starred in scores of movies in a career that spanned 50 years. Five of them are collected on John Wayne - An American Icon Collection, a two-disc, no-frills (as in no bonus material) set offered at a very reasonable price. Ranging from 1940 to 1957, these items reveal that although he didn't have a lot of range ("I play John Wayne in pretty much every film I do," he once admitted), Wayne was at least willing to tackle other genres besides the Westerns with which he's so closely identified; here he portrays a coal miner, a moonshiner, and a legendary warrior, along with the more expected military roles. As for the quality of the films, let's just say that "good" and "entertaining" don't always go on the same page, and the set at least has plenty of the latter. Seven Sinners ('40) is the best of the lot, with Marlene Dietrich sly and radiant as the delightfully named Bijou Blanche, a South Pacific cabaret singer who tantalizes naval officer Wayne. At the other end of the spectrum is The Conqueror ('55), generally regarded as Wayne's worst feature ever, but even it is a campy hoot. Sporting a Fu Manchu 'stache and many silly hats and delivering some preposterously stilted dialogue ("Hi, Mom" becomes "I greet you, my mother!"), Wayne plays Mongol warlord Temujin, soon to become Genghis Khan, who's obsessed with a beautiful princess (Susan Hayward as a Tartar? Mayonnaise is more like it) who just happens to be the daughter of the man responsible for the death of Temujin's father. Pittsburgh ('42), again pairing Wayne with the luminous Dietrich, is considerably better, charting the rise, fall, and redemption of miner-turned-captain-of-industry Charles "Pittsburgh" Markham in a story that's both humorous and dramatic before devolving into flag-waving World War II propaganda. Neither The Shepherd of the Hills ('41), sentimental hokum about a clan of drawling, superstitious Ozark hicks, nor Jet Pilot ('57), with a pre-Psycho Janet Leigh as a Russian spy (!), ranks as what you'd call a classic--indeed, there are no classics to be found anywhere here--but the Duke, always a man's man, probably wouldn't mind. "When people say a John Wayne picture got bad reviews," he said, "I always wonder if they know it's a redundant sentence, but hell, I don't care. People like my pictures and that's all that counts." --Sam Graham

This must-own set confirms John Wayne's status as a true American icon!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great American at some of his best.......2007-06-27

Movies used to be great, John Wayne truly was a great icon of American bigscreen, movies then always defeated the evil forces, good always triumphed. I guess, we had real writers then, who knew what people wanted to see. I highly reccommend this. The DVD got here in a timely fashion.

4 out of 5 stars Not Iconic but Interesting.......2007-06-11

This collection fills in another void in available John Wayne films. Most of these movies, save Shepherd, have not been seen on TV for decades, if ever and none of them are his best work. But these movies span the War years, during Wayne's transition into a star.

In the "Seven Sinners" - 1940 - Wayne plays second fiddle to Marlene Dietrich, a cabaret singer for whose love Wayne is willing to sacrafice his Naval career. Made a year before Pearl Harbor, the movie shows a strangely innocent view of the service - where chasing chorus girls and visiting native bars seemed to be the sole occupation of the Navy.

The "Shepherd of the Hills" - 1941 - is the gem of this collection, in which Wayne plays an Ozark orphan who is manipulated by his aunt to murder his absent father. Harry Carry, as Wayne's long-lost father, who is willing to kill his own son rather than see him branded a murderer, steals the show.

Pittsburgh - 1942 - Wayne stars with Randolf Scott and Marlene Dietrich (again) in this "Horatio Alger" story about two coal miners with an idea that make them rich. Along the way, Wayne loses his moral center and loses the girl and his friends. This movie almost turns into a pro-industry/anti-labor propoganda piece in support of the war effort.

The Conqueror - 1955 - This is one of the worst movies John Wayne ever made. It is worth watching just to see how bad an actor he could be. Wayne plays Genghis Khan, and Susan Hayward plays a mongol princess. The costumes are ridiculous, the acting awful, and the results are tragic, as Howard Hughes filmed the movie out in the Nevada desert in a region polluted by above-ground nuclear testing. Worse yet, when the production moved into the studio, Hughes had tons of the red, radioactive dirt trucked into the set. Many of the actors in the movie, including Wayne, eventually died of various cancer. No doubt Wayne's lifetime of cigarette smoking was the main factor in his death, but the fact that he spent months, during the filming of the Conquerer, breathing radioactive isolotes did not help.

Jet Pilot - 1957 - is another forgettable Wayne film, in which he plays a pilot who defects to Russian (but not really) for love of a female Russia pilot who defects to the U.S., turns out to be a spy, but not really. The only virtue of this film is that it is marginally better than The Conqueror.

This set is a good mix of Wayne's non-cowboy films and show the wide range of roles he was able to play from romantic comedies to period drama and propaganda film to war movies. Wayne affectionados will want to add this to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Shepherd of the Hills.......2007-06-08

this was very good movie and of special interest to me. the other movies were good, too. John Wayne was an excellent actor.

5 out of 5 stars J.W. an american icon.......2007-05-27

The "Duke" is my favorite action hero. Out of 152 movies this giant has made, I have seen 116. The oldest being "SALUTE'. I will continue to add to my collection as his older movies are being added to the dvd list.

5 out of 5 stars The Shepherd of the Hills.......2007-01-21

I bought this DVD simply because it contained The Shepherd of the Hills, which is a different kind of movie for John Wayne, who did a great job in his role as a young and determined Ozark mountain man who learns a great lesson at the end of the movie.

If you're into sword-and-sorcery tales, look no further than this critically underrated big-screen fantasy based on the fiction of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard. It was a troubled production and the outcome is far different from the more serious and intelligent epic that screenwriter Charles Pogue had originally conceived. Still, this is a giddy, energetic throwback to the Ray Harryhausen movie fantasies of the 1950s and '60s, and it's a perfect vehicle for Kevin Sorbo, the hunky star of TV's Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Sorbo brings an appropriate combination of depth and physical agility to the role of Kull (son of Conan), but he and director John Nicolella know better than to take this stuff too seriously. The movie's humor is nicely integrated into the dialogue without resorting to lame punch lines, and Tia Carrere is enjoyably campy as the evil goddess who lures Kull from his favorite concubine (Karina Lombard) as she plots to overthrow the kingdom of Valusia. Playwright Harvey Fierstein also provides comic relief in a scene-stealing role, and with an abundance of black magic, stunning Slovakian locations, and grand battles of good versus evil, this heroic adventure is more entertaining than you might expect. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kevin over Arnold anytime.......2007-05-07

Well.. at least this time. This movie is a funny, action packed, sword slashing, babe rescuing, good time.

4 out of 5 stars "That's How A Barbarian Fights".......2006-07-13

'Kull' released in '97 is an enjoyable fantasy action/adventure starring Kevin Sorbo as the invincible barbarian Kull. There's not much difference in Kevin's characterization in this film from his 'Hercules' role he played so well for 6 seasons on television, but when you've got a good thing going why change.

The film has all the required elements; attractive hero Kull (Kevin Sorbo), beautiful love interest Zareta (Karina Lombard), sexy evil villianess Akivasha (Tia Carrera), likeable side-kick Ascalante (Litefoot), an oncoming invasion of demons, and a dangerous quest against impossible odds. What else could anyone ask for? Add to that a superior supporting cast of other would be heroes and villians and you've got a pretty good evening of entertainment awaiting.

Maybe it's not exactly a classic, but if you're a Hercules fan or just a kid (chronologically or at heart) who loves sword and sorcery movies this is one you'll watch over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars the best rainy saturday afternoon movie I know.......2006-06-29

Kevin Sorbo is fun to watch, with or without a shirt. But for a rainy Saturday afternoon, I will opt for this delightful actor, fencing across the screen, tossing one-liners such as "She said she was only 18" and doing in the bad guys, or bad girls, as the moment requires.

Is the story original? No, but it is intertaining.
Is the acting legendary? No, but does it matter?
Are the special effects the best I have ever seen? I don't know, I got lost in the movie again and forgot to pay attention to the electronic wizardry.
Does the good guy get the girl? Silly question, considering the good guy is a tall, gorgeous man with muscles and a twinkle in his eye.
Go get the popcorn, pour out a glass of iced tea, turn off the phone and settle back and just enjoy the show.

1 out of 5 stars horrid treatment of Howard's work.......2005-12-07

This movie is just horrible. Whereas Robert Howard's Kull was a somber, brooding character capable of both savagery and scholarly pursuits, this movie's Kull lacks any definable personality at all. Sorbo--horrible actor he is--simply is not the right actor to play Howard's first savage barbarian. Putting Acheron ahead of Valusia's time shows the writers couldn't even research the source naterial carefully enough to at least try to translate Howard to the screen. In addition, Howard's Kull is uninterested in women, while this Kull is almost as much a womanizer as Conan. (If they wanted to make another Conan movie, they should have done so. This is a completely different character.) Almost all--if not all--of Kull's supporting characters are removed in favor of holdovers from Howard's Conan stories (ie, Ascalante, Akivasha, et al). Though the story vaguely borrows from several Howard stories like The Hour of the Dragon (Howard's Conan novel), "By This Axe, I Rule!" (the story Howard converted from a Kull story into the first Conan story), and Exile of Atlantis (Kull's origin story), it is sloppy and incoherent and reduces his lyrical writing to dissonant garbage. Although of course it too has its flaws, Conan the Barbarian featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger is a much more satisfying rendition of one of Howard's creations. This movie should definitely be avoided while someone in Hollywood finds a way to bring a worthwhile version of something the late, great Texan wrote to the screen. Lastly, even the reviewer couldn't get things right, for Kull was an Atlantean of the Pre-Cataclysmic Age even as Conan was a Cimmerian of the Hyborian Age of several thousand years after Kull's time. Ah, well. I'm done venting.

5 out of 5 stars Ridiculous rock music + Tia Carrere + Action = Awesome.......2005-10-12

Tia Carrere is awesome in this movie, only better in Showdown in Little Tokyo. And Dolph Lundgren owns Kevin Sorbo. But still, this movie rocks. If you buy this movie, you cannot be disappointed - it's scientific fact. Unless of course you're a communist. But what kind of communist would be reading reviews for a product at an online store? Hypocrite!

Follow the rise to glory of Genghis Kahn, the 13th century Mongol leader whose empire covered four times the area conquered by Alexander the Great. Combining the savagery of a real-life Conan the Barbarian with the sheer tactical genius of Napoleon, Genghis brought his armies from the outermost reaches of eastern Asia to the edge of Europe, uniting the disparate Mongol tribes along the way and establishing an empire that would last until the 17th century. From his humble beginning as an orphaned child in the wilderness to his deathbed plea to his sons to expand his empire to the ends of the earth, learn how Genghis rose to power and maintained his stranglehold on the Asian continent through a mix of diplomacy, military acumen and brutality.

5 out of 5 stars so good that you can see your whole life differently.......2007-05-03

This is an absolutely wonderful historical film, about a time barely 100 years ago. Father and son are poverty striken and alone, seeking their fortune in a new country that is primitive, prejudiced, and brutal. As they struggle, Pelle is coming of age, observing the world around him with an acute and sensitive intelligence. His father is old and will be left behind, to die.

This is a masterpiece of social realism. As such, it lifted me out of my mundane concerns and brought me into an entirely different milieu and time, which was a welcome yet frightening experience. Only the greatest films and art can do this kind of leeching into one's heart. It is completely believable.

If there are any criticisms I have, it is the film's heavy-handedness, such as the punishment meted to the horrible philandering husband. In this, it resembles The Jungle, with its political propaganda not too far below the surface.

Warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best films about immigration and father - son relationship.......2007-04-20

If any film ever deserves a sequel, "Pelle the Conqueror" is it. In the admirable winner of both the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film, Max von Sydow (in his only Oscar nominated performance) is Lasse, a Swedish middle- aged widower who takes his young son Pelle from impoverished ninetieth century Sweden to Denmark in search and hope of finding a better life. Because of his age and lack of any specific job skills, Lasse is forced to become a laborer on a farm, with Pelle helping him out. You know, when my family and I first came to America in 1991, one of our new friends, himself a "new American" told us one thing that I always remember, "No matter what, every immigrant is going to eat a lot of dirt, some - more, some- less". Lasse and Pelle of Billie August's superb drama had been served plenty of that meal - they had to sleep in a former chicken coop, they are poor, Pelle is bullied by kids at the local school. Lasse meets a nice local woman whose husband has been lost at sea and wants to marry her but the husband returns... Lasse and his son will go through many of cruelties and indignities together but they always remain devoted to each other. Their relationship is not only of a son and his father but also of two loyal friends. In the end, Pelle has realized that the farm is no place for him, and I want to know what happens to him and to his father next - but there is no sequel for this involving, moving, and simply magnificent movie yet.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful father -son movie.......2007-01-22

This is a GREAT movie. The son wants the father to protect and stand up for him but alas, the father is just too old, tired and worn out. Hope never dies in the hearts of the young tho. GREAT acting for sure.
A must watch!

elements of great cinema are in there. So
buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Pelle the Conqueror.......2006-08-28

Swedish immigrants move to Denmark in search of a better life in the land of riches and find themselves facing the same crap as Mexicans in the USA, Filipinas in Hong Kong, etc. Mostly, we focus on an old widower (Max von Sydow) and his young son, portrayed by a very talented actor we've never heard of. We get a full cast of characters, each with his or her own story, and we get to know them. Authenticity was sought and achieved. It was a little slow getting started, I admit, but since it clocks in at 2.5 hours, so what? What's your hurry? It's a fine film and I enjoyed watching it.

I'd also like to mention that it was made in 1987. Just in case you watch it. There's a little scene that may remind my American readers of Lorena Bobbitt. The film came first. 1987. Life imitates art. Or something.

2 out of 5 stars A Silly Movie.......2007-06-16

I thought this was a silly movie. John Wayne was hopelessly miscast. It is historically laughable. Susan Hayward's part is absurd. The ending was absurd. All of this said, it was a passable entertainment that was in other ways well directed & still somewhat enjoyable. The script if silly was well constructed.

4 out of 5 stars racy for it's time.......2007-06-13

good, bad, corny, historical documentary, who cares. it's a fun way to pass the evening without wasting gas and suffering thru the harrassment of renting another movie. i showed it at a nursing home and the old gizzers came alive. especially when hayworth danced in the red costume. later they said howard hughes locked it up and never released it in theaters. it was much too racy for it's time.

3 out of 5 stars Vigorous, unusual, funny and spectacular!..........2006-12-24

In the 1950s, people liked Cinemascope and Technicolor movies...

Epic movies with gigantic battles, huge and fantastic sets and costumes, were massive projects and hugely popular...

One of them is 'The Conqueror' played by legendary actors...

The film deals with Mongols, Merkits, and Tartars struggling for survival in a harsh and arid land.. Plunder and rapine were their way of life and no man trusted his brother...

The Mongols, led by Temujin (John Wayne) and his blood brother Jamuga (Pedro Armendariz), attack a Merkit caravan, capturing the untamed princess Bortai (Susan Hayward), daughter of Kumlek (Ted De Corsia), ruler of the Tartars and slayer of Temujin's father...

Temujin's mother, Hunlun (Agnes Moorehead), fears Kumlek's wrath, and she begs Temujin to set Bortai free, but he refuses... Despite his vow to avenge his father's death, Temujin was fascinated by the girl's beauty and fire..

The Merkits attack in an attempt to rescue the hot-blooded Bortai but are defeated... Bortai escapes but is soon recaptured by Temujin, who declares he will make her his wife... But later, she lets him know how much she despises him: 'Before that day dawns, Mongol, the vultures will have feasted on your heart!'

Temujin waits... The Mongols then go on to Urga--a Chinesea town ruled by the powerful Wang Khan (Thomas Gomez).

The mighty ruler welcomes his guests and entertains them at a banquet... Bortai attends and is seated next to him... She suddenly decides to dance for the Khan and, taking two swords, starts her exotic dance... At the end, having discarded one of the swords, she aims the other one at Temujin...

As Genghis Khan, the 12th Century Mongol warrior whose coming changed the face of the world, John Wayne won't disappoint his ardent followers...

The highlight of the film is the sensational veil and swords dance Susan Hayward performs... Hayward looked radiant in her wrath...

Agnes Moorehead nearly manages to steal the show as her imitation of a talking prune is absolutely extraordinary...

Two of Wayne's sons had bit parts as warriors...

4 out of 5 stars john wayne IS genghis khan in a movie that isn't as bad as they say.......2006-05-09

i know you have all heard the stories about this movie, the cancer among the cast, and how bad the movie is,well i hate to burst anyones bubble but this is a good epic from hollywood.not a great film but a good one.
the story of how genghis khan came to power, this has some great battle scenes and great widescreen shots of the vast plains and desert. wayne is really quite good in the role9it's the screenplay that saddles him with charlie chan speaches that make him seem bad at times), and at the center of it all susan hayward as his object of lust. it may be me but they had a very real heat between them that makes them shine when they play off one another.
skip all the hype, turn down what you expect(this is no quiet man or searchers) and i think if you like wayne you will like this one.

3 out of 5 stars Review - The Conqueror.......2006-01-24

This movie suffers from a lot of criticism, because it seems to have been cast for the star power of the actors than to try to make it's appearance accurate to the story it's based on. On it's own it's not a bad story, although it's hard to take John Wayne as either a bad guy or an asian. But this was the 1950's, I'm not sure that there were enough asian-descended actors available to cast it with an accurate look, and I'm sure even if there was the production company would have been afraid it wouldn't have done well cast that way. In the end, it's still here making them some money or you wouldn't be able to buy a DVD of it.

Pretty much you'll either hate it or be okay with it, so if in doubt try and rent it somewhere before buying. Don't look for accuracy, just for the entertainment value.

Curiously, this is a mistake Hollywood has yet to learn from, even movies as recent as the bomb Dukes Of Hazzard film suffer from the same terrible miscasting based on star power instead of trying to make a film that remains accurate to the original story.

I'd love to see the audio track from this used to make an anime-styled version and see how people take it. Would it work better with the same actors voices, but drawn to appear more accurately?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, surreal, philosophical and sexy !.......2006-06-08

"Reign: The Conqueror" is an amazing series that is half about the story of Alexander the Great and half about ancient Western philosophy. Confusing and surreal at first, the intricate story and subtle symbolism become more clear when viewed again. The authors have clearly studied Greek philosophy, especially that of Plato and Aristotle (who are both characters in the show), as well as the half math / half mysticism of Pythagoras.

The startlingly original art by Peter Chung is what really makes this show work. It is fascinating, dreamy and brilliant like "Aeon Flux", and it brings out so many subtleties in the story.

The story is very sexually charged. Alexander's mother is a sorceress who builds up her energy supply by getting masturbated by a large snake while naked women dance around her. Alexander and his crew are all queer in some way. Two of the guys are clearly in some sort of a relationship at the beginning of the show and are explicitly not interested in having sex with women. Another one has fantasies of getting tied up and whipped by Alexander while wearing leather. And Alexander's harp-playing bodyguard and confidante is a tranny ninja with excellent make-up skills who looks like a skinnier Boy George. Plus there is wonderful sexual tension between Alexander and Darius the King of Persia, who is modelled after Freddy Mercury.

The combination of amazing art, interesting historical-based story, well-thought-out philosophical ideas (compared to other 'philosophical' anime), progressive and mature sexual themes, and good music, produce a cool, surreal, subversive, and unique anime show that definitely gets better every time you watch it.

Recommended to anyone who is a fan of Peter Chung, has an interest in ancient Western thought and/or the story of Alexander the Great, is looking for more anime that addresses alternative sexualities and genders, or just wants something good to get stoned to.

The series is great...check out the other informative reviews, BUT this set is no longer available. I placed my order for this on December 5th, 2005....contacted Amazon customer service and the friendly service rep figured out that Amazon has had this item backordered since January 4th, 2004. I can't find a web site for Tokyopop (the releasing studio) nor any contact info for them.

Try buying the seperate DVD's instead of this set. Or take your chance with the auction sites.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT "ANIME"!!!.......2005-12-14

People have already discussed the story aspect a lot, so let me talk a bit about the visual style.

Someone complained about the style of this series, criticizing the way the faces and characters looked, etc. Thing is, THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ANIME!!! And that's the point. It was *not* created in Japan, It was *not* created by Japanese anime artists, it has its own unique style, an almost anti-anime feel, at times.

I fell in love with the Aeon Flux series almost 10 years ago and love this one as well for many reasons. One of them is that it looks like nothing else. The big eyed, spikey-colored-haired Japanese cliches are everywhere to the point where they have become a gigantic fetid pool of staleness and unoriginal ideas. The "look and feel" that Peter Chung has created is that of comic book grace and agility in Western look with jagged edges and ugly lines that make up beautiful and unique characters... It's just so hard to describe; The way they look is an extension of their personality.

We're just tired of the same old Anime plastic-character look that you see over and over and over and over... It's gotten stale. It's good to have some variety now and again. If you were disappointed that the characters didn't look like Super Milk Chan or Pokemon or whatever anime garbage is currently on the Cartoon Network... well, if it makes you feel any better I feel completely sorry for you.

5 out of 5 stars Fans of Peter Chung's animation, along with Greek and Alexander the Great history buffs will love this.......2005-11-29

Reign the Conqueror is an animation tour de force; as the graphic novel Watchmen proved comics were not just for children, this epic series does the same for animation. Reign the Conqueror is the story of Alexander the Great told in a unique manner with an extremely deep and layered plot presented in the most stylized and creative animation seen in ages. A myriad of elements from Greek history are presented here in an innovative manner unlike anything I have ever observed; the closest thing I can compare it to is the film version of Shakespeare's Titus that brings the Roman Empire into modern times, but with Reign there is more of a fantastical twist. To call it either science fiction or fantasy tethers the series to conceptions of these respective genres that don't quite justly describe Reign the Conqueror. The realm presented in the series is a blending of science and magic meshed with the classical Greek world as it was when Alexander the Great lived, creating a monolithic landscape inspired by the Hellenistic empire. Greek philosophy also plays a pivotal role in the series, with Pythagoras, Diogenes, Plato and Aristotle all present, and each act opening with a philosophical quip to help explain the theme of the episode.
The historical sources that deal with Alexander are constantly deconstructed for their viability, and each of them varies widely in their telling of the events of history's most accomplished empire-builder as well as presenting him with a wide range of descriptions of personality; in some Alexander is a conquering hero, in others a bloody and selfish barbarian. Reign the Conqueror builds on this trend, choosing to show Alexander in a stoic, mostly honorable and ultimately sympathetic light without presenting him as a perfect or flawless hero. Reign the Conqueror is obviously not purely historical, but it does pay homage to the majority of the milestones from the history of Alexander (the Oracle of Ammon in a remote corner of Egypt is visited and foretells Ptolemy's destiny as ruler of Egypt; Alexander destroys the city-state of Thebes; the Gordian knot is severed; Alexander's meeting with Diogenes; Olympias is the priestess-princess of Samothrace and is found with a great serpent while pregnant with Alexander...) Aside from the fantastical landscape that the series takes place in, only a few MAJOR deviations from the historical inspiration occur (Alexander's infamous alcoholism is not shown, Aristotle has a niece that is in Alexander's inner-circle, Alexander slays Darius in battle instead of the Persian emperor being betrayed by one of his own men, Clitus is not killed by Alexander, and Philotas and his father Parmenion are not killed by order of Alexander directly, with the controversy of proskynesis being absent as well).
The plot is very intricate, but the gist of it goes as thus: Olympias, mother of Alexander, is the high priestess of the mystery cult of Samothrace and is destined to give birth to the Devil King that will destroy the world. She meets Philip II of Macedon at one of the cult's secret initiation rituals and soon becomes his queen. Olympias unnerves the populace of Macedon with her oracles regarding Alexander's fate, and this mixed with her foreign ancestry splits public opinion on the Queen and her son, Alexander, who she keeps close to her side, resulting in his strained relations with Philip. The famed philosopher Aristotle tutors Alexander, and by the time the prince is at the cusp of manhood he has developed his own deep ambitions for the civilizing of the world- with Alexander being the perfect tool for the job. The first few episodes of the series mainly deal with the unfolding of events that lead to the ascension of Alexander to the throne of Macedon and the death of Philip. Once enthroned, Alexander quickly sweeps across Greece, putting down the Athenian-led resistance movement to Macedonian hegemony and making his ambition to take on the Persian Empire well known. The Cult of Pythagoras in Greece, the Magi of Zoroaster in Persia, and the Brahman priests of India all possess formidable supernatural powers and a steadfast devotion to killing Alexander and pursue him throughout his epic quest for power (note: the Oracle of Ammon in Egypt presents priests that seem to bear some resemblance to the three related orders that seek to assassinate Alexander but whatever relationship exists between them remains obscure). Mixed into this tapestry of conspiracies and ambitions is the mysterious object known as the Platohedron, a strange crystal that is the receptacle for all knowledge in the world as well as a cornerstone of reality itself, and as Alexander and Darius and the other temporal rulers clash on the field of battle, the more esoteric cast seeks to locate the Platohedron and uncover its connection with Alexander. As Alexander pushes his conquest to the very edge of the world he comes into conflict with is own godlike aspect, the Devil King of Destruction, and the prophecy that he will rule the world and then destroy it.
Criticisms of the series tend to be generated from the one major failing of the series: it is perhaps too deep, too complex, too philosophical, and too innovative for most audiences. People expecting typical anime will be severely disappointed; there is nothing typical about Reign the Conqueror and as such many of the distinctive elements of anime, if not all of them, are not present in the series (personally I think even classifying it as anime is misleading). Some are critical of it not being historical. This is the poorest criticism as the series is clearly not intended to be a purist account of Alexander the Great, and any one who has studied his history is aware that such a thing is simply not possible; NONE of the historical, contemporary or anthropological accounts collectively agree on a majority of the elements of the story of Alexander.
Others have criticized its sexual undertones. The "thong"-controversy can be explained by the involvement of Peter Chung in the animation of the series (and his influence is heavy and obvious); as it was in Aeon Flux, the body language of the characters is an important as the dialogue and to present them in minimalist clothing serves this endeavor, depicting them with more complicated clothing makes the animation about the clothes, not the characters. The series is intended for an adult and mature audience, and if the fact that you see a little skin should influence whether or not you will enjoy Reign the Conqueror then there is little chance that you will be able to really grasp the deeper context involved (note: I have not seen one review that is critical of all the bare breasts that pop up in the series, only the skimpy clothing gets panned). Also there have been complaints on both sides of the issue regarding the depiction of Alexander's sexuality. The historical sources of him do present a few examples that he, like many males in the Hellenic world, was intimately involved with both genders (namely a pubescent castrati inherited from Darius' court), and most believe that he and his life-long friend Hephaestion were lovers although the historical evidence of such a relationship between the two of them is scant and ambiguous at best. The series has been criticized for depicting Alexander as being bisexual and by others for NOT being depicted as bisexual. Unless the Japanese version is different from the unedited English version DVD, it seems Alexander is more asexual than anything; there is no overt sexual element in his relationship with Hephaestion or any other male, and his relationship with Roxanna, although hinting at a carnal impulses, is mostly cold and distant and could easily be seen as a political necessity for him to produce an heir of mixed Macedonian/Persian heritage.
I highly recommend this series to any who are fans of Peter Chung and/or fascinated with Classical studies. The animation is stunning, and the depiction of Hellenic Greece (and Persia, Egypt, etc...) will fascinate the imagination; it is so far some of Peter Chung's best work (at least in my opinion, even better than Aeon Flux in some respects) and I recommend it to any who enjoy his distinctive style. The story is very deep and any dramatization of Alexander the Great (the series is probably more informative than the Oliver Stone movie despite its more fantastical presentation) or any other tale of ancient Hellas (the recent movie Troy took more unnecessary liberties with the essential fabric of the legend of the Trojan War than this series did with Alexander- maybe we will be blessed with a similar animation epic dealing with Troy someday) will have a tough time topping this one.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not genius.......2004-11-26

Peter chung has a love-hate relationship with most fans, and this is no exception. Be warned, this is not a historical essay but it is just fun to watch. The fact that it is a sci-fi/historical(is that possible????) story means that it will not sit well with some. This anime takes the life of alexander the great, but gives it a mecha( for non-anime fans mecha = big robots)/shounen(for non anime fans-anime for boys)/scifi touch, and spins it with drama along with some good battle scenes. Reign is a good break from typical shounen anime, and carries it's ideas out well. However, some of the characters aren't well developed, and sometimes the philosphical references are ill-explained. Reign also has some major flaws in the art&animation, being that it would seem that corners were cut during battle scenes(they have a habit of using the same cavalry charging scene every time) and some times the characters are drawn poorly. The character designs are not standard in anime, being that there is no big eyes, huge heads, shiny hair or little tear drops. Instead the characters in reign are thin and angular(fyi, everybody wears a thong in this show :( ). Overall, it's an above avarge anime with good ideas, but it dosen't reach its full potential.

This bizarre reworking of the story of Alexander the Great features character designs by Peter Chung (Aeon Flux). It's a singularly weird mixture of anime conventions, sci-fi and fantasy elements, special effects, and muddled ancient history. Alexander's comrades and future generals, including Hephaestion and Ptolemy, have been recast as effete courtiers. Bucephalus ("Ox-head"), his steed, is a flesh-eating monster. His mother is a Medea-esque sorceress, and his tutor Aristotle has the inevitably spunky niece, Cassandra. The magician-disciples of Pythagoras appear and disappear, searching for the "Platohedron." The elongated, mannerist figures bear Chung's distinctive stamp. The women wear revealing robes; the men run around in bits of armor and codpieces. Reign is slated for the Adult Swim bloc on the Cartoon Network, but editing this violent series to American broadcast standards will pose real challenges. (Unrated; suitable for ages 17 and older: violence, nudity, alcohol use, grotesque imagery, sexual situations) --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The first volume is the best of the series.......2005-10-13

A bit about my background. I like some anime, but I'm no otaku. Fact is, I rented this because I am getting a PhD in Egyptology, and at the time I saw this, was heavily studying Alexander the Great and his successors.

That said, I liked this movie. I liked how it took the story of Alexander and tried to make a fantasy space-opera out of it. It works a lot of the time. They didn't even have to exaggerate too much. I laughed when they got things wrong and laughed harder when they got things right. It rewarded my scholarship and entertained me. The art direction and character design are ridiculous, I got used to it. Besides, don't tell me that androgyny and flexible sexuality has no place in an Alexander story.

The later volumes of the series are not as entertaining, and they waver from what I like about the historical character too much for me to ignore, and I was dissapointed in the ending. But if I find this volume on sale for a discount somewhere, I probably will pick it up.

I can't recommend this to anime fans. They might hate it, they might like it, but I just don't have enough background. And I can't recommend it to the casual observer, because the plot is kooky even for someone with graduate-level knowledge of the subject.

I will recommend it to anyone who knows a thing or two about Alexander the Great and has an open mind to see what Chung and his associates did with the story. Listen with the Japanese-language track and sing along to the ludicrous J-pop love song theme, or use the English track with its slightly more appropriate theme song. Either way, rent this at your local video store before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Did you like Aeon Flux?.......2003-12-11

If you liked Aeon Flux (either the Liquid TV shorts or the longer episodes), then you'll like Reign. If you have no idea what Aeon Flux is, then you should watch it or an ep of Reign before committing to buying the DVD. The animation style is very unique, and not everyone likes it. It doesn't look like what people have come to expect from "anime." It's really sort of a post-anime style. I'm not sure why there are all those other people's names in the credits, because this show has Peter Chung's fingerprints all over it.

The plot is decent and makes the viewer pay attention. The show actually makes you think about what is going on. In fact, some of the plot is *gasp* ambiguous. So if Trigun's plot taxed your noggin, maybe Reign is too far in the deep end for you. The one improvement over Aeon Flux is that the plot makes a heck of a lot more sense and hangs together throughout the series.

As others have mentioned, the clothing choices are somewhat bizarre (similar to Aeon Flux), and the sexual persuasion of some of the characters is ambiguous (not sure what someone who has a sexual preference for snakes is called), so if you're not comfortable with that, maybe you should move on.

A unique and cutting-edge animated series.

1 out of 5 stars I can't belive it, I don't believe it. You people are MAD!.......2003-08-21

I read some 5-star reviews saying how great this anime is. Great? It's awful. The worst anime next to Beyblade. "Oh it has gorgeous animation and character designs..." WTF?! Yes the character designs are different...I guess Peter Chung doesn't like to see men wearing pants. Oh no, he likes to see his men in METAL THONGS! WTF?!!!!! Of ALL the things he could think of, metal thongs? Wouldn't those hurt like hell? Not to mention how nasty they look x_x I'd rather see them in mini-skirts! Chung ruined Alexander. He made him look like a cross-dresser (o_0) It's all VERY historically inaccurate and 100% disgusting. Monsters crawling out of navels...gross.

I have no clue WHAT Chung was smoking when he made this. The anime itself looks like it's on drugs. No kidding, when do you see an anime where guys are wearing metal thongs? Oh and before you tell me, "Dont listen to all those ppl givin bad reviews! Theyre non-otakus (anime fans)!!! this show rox!!" I love anime. I've seen Nausicaa, Trigun, Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, Princess Mononoke, Inuyasha, Spirited Away, Naruto, and many others. This one is probably the worst (along with Beyblade x_x). DO NOT SEE IT. Not even worth one star. A big fat ZERO from this otaku.

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical anime, but still one of the best I've seen.......2003-04-19

As other reviewers have said, if you didn't like Aeon Flux then you may not like the artwork of Reign. My wife couldn't get beyond the character styling until I forced her to sit through an entire episode. Now she's hooked! Although different, the styling has its moments where the quality shines through. The English voice track is excellent, and fits both the characters and adult mood.

Yes, this is very much an adult-oriented anime; for reasons other than the nudity, etc. Although obviously based on several factual/historical elements of Alexander's life, it deviates in many ways that I'll leave for the viewer to discover. This imaginative reworking and time-forwarding of Alexander's life is still completely captivating. It manages to place all of the elements that made Alexander the larger-than-life historical figure into a completely different context, yet still preserves the essence of his life that has drawn readers to the story of "Alexander the Great" for centuries.

Reign is another beautiful facet in the growing collection of world-class anime on DVD that should rank favorably among the other greats like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D. It's a highly imaginative and inspiring anime!!!

....and a bar-b-que samich. haw haw haw

How do you say "unwatchable" in Mongol? Booga booga tamponski! Yeah, thats right. Totally booga booga.

Oh how I want to love this movie, it's just too bad I cant seem to get past minute 22 of the thing. I mean come'on think about it...John Wayne as Genghis Khan? Only Howard Hughes could lord over a production so insanely bad, with the most cornball script and dialogue in Hollywood history like this line assigned to the Duke..."There are moments fur wisdom, Juh-mooo-gah, then I listen to YOU--and there are moments fur action--then I listen to my blood. I feel this Tar-Tar wo-mern is fur me, and my blood says, 'TAKE HER!'" Bwahahaahahahahahahahaaahahaaaa

I have watched the first 22 minutes of this flick about 10 times, hoping each time that I'll see something artfully redeeming about this monumental disaster...I dont think I can sit through those first two chapters again.

However, this Korean import DVD is a pretty solid transfer. It actually works on both my computer and DVD player, but the 2.0 Dolby is all to the front, no surround effect, and no extras to speak of. Filmed in Fallout-O-Rama. RIP to the 80+ cast and crew that contracted and/or died from the Big C as a result of filming in a location impacted by A-bomb tests conducted earlier at Yucca Flats. 1 Nuke

2 out of 5 stars Movie Trivia.......2006-02-19

Once you stop laughing at the idea of the "Duke" playing Genghis Khan with that same western drawl, consider this: almost everyone who worked on this film died of cancer because the movie was made on location in the desert where there had been testing of the a-bomb.

3 out of 5 stars I WAITED FIFTY YEARS TO SEE THIS! WAS IT WORTH THE WAIT?.......2005-10-18

This is the import edition of this film. It has some Chinese writing in the front, but I did have the option of playing it in English.

"The Conqueror" is probably the strangest mainstream film I can recall ever seeing. It is a grand production and there is NO reason to avoid seeing this film. Nevertheless, I do have some strong opinions about the film.

Today when actors take on projects that are out-of-character and don't go well, like DeNiro in "Rocky and Bullwinkle", we say they were experimenting in the role. On that basis, John Wayne's foray into experimentation definitely hit its peak when he starred as Genghis Khan in "The Conqueror". Of course, John Wayne is the quintessential "GOOD GUY" and "GENGHIS KHAN" played like a "Good Guy" is like "Santa Claus" playing a serial killer. Yucky at the very least, impossible to do well is more like it.

John Wayne, or let's suspend disbelief now by just referring to him henceforth as Genghis. Okay, Genghis definitely came to work on this film and no one could say in their right mind that he didn't give his all in this try-to-be epic during this, his prime of acting power mid-1950s. Genghis was trying to be like the real Genghis, but he looked and sounded like John Wayne. Yes, the trapping of being too popular, too good-natured and too well-known definitely affected Genghis in both the making of and the audiences' reception of "The Conqueror".

I was okay with everything right up until he slapped Susan Hayward several times [wife of Genghis according to Genghis] and ordered that several of his "loyal" men who were drunk on guard duty be hanged. Whether this type of violence was fitting seemed not to matter as I forgot we were watching Genghis at work and just saw John Wayne acting very unbelievably. That's it. That's what is wrong with the movie. It is VERY HARD TO BELIEVE!

It's not the stilted, ridiculous dialogue. Even the best historical films have some of that, recall "Ben Hur". It's not the American actors like William Conrad and Agnes Moorehead passing for Asians along with the Duke [I mean Genghis]. It's not that Susan Hayward's make-up and appearance was much too modern, or that the brief, seductive dance by former Playboy Bunny Sylvia Lewis at the palace of Wang Khan [Thomas Gomez] was a bit too much, especially for 1956. It's not that Susan Hayward's father, a tribal leader, was drunk for the entire film and seemed far too crude to have Susan Hayward in her most polished state as his daughter or to lead a tribe. It's not the complete lack of regard for human life that permeates the entire film and the underlying cruelty and treachery that is implicitly and often all too explicity welded into every scene.

No, it is not any one of the aforementioned issues, but all of them together that is just too much for any film to overcome. Having said that, this movie is worth watching as it is a big and rather bizarre sprawling spectacle very much in the Howard Hughes [more is better] style of filmmaking. There is no cutting corners on this film.

THE DVD: Whereas the film was lavishly produced, this "IMPORTED" DVD is a "single-layer" transfer and has no features, but it does play surprisingly well for an "IMPORTED" product and this widescreen 2.35:1 looks much better than the video did. Though it claims to be in "Dolby Surround" I could not hear that, but the sound was satisfactory. It is in English only, but English or Spanish subtitles are available if needed.

Somehow this spartan, imported-edition DVD sells for over $30 and the only other available DVD [Goodtimes] also starts at about $30 which makes this a questionable purchase. Many city libraries do have this dubious classic available for circulation. I would recommend checking it out.

Though I put off seeing this film for almost 50 years, I wish I had seen it sooner as it was definitely worth seeing. I am sure to see it again before another 50 years elapses. I did manage to see the film twice now, but both available DVDs completely lacked features.
