Terrific And Very Funny Chinese Horror-Comedy!.......2007-04-23
I wish there were more films like this one. It's great to see parody in any genre. Moreover, it is necessary at times. Which leads us to this unique film "Mr. Vampire." Having first seen the film many years ago [release date around 1986], I originally owned an import VHS copy which was pretty choppy and bad to say the least. I was happy when the DVD was released and grabbed it up right away. That's how much I like this film. The film has action, horror and comedy. Those who are into Martial Arts films, however, may not find the film as much action-based as you might like. But it does deliver as a fun parody of Martial Arts action. Nevertheless, I did like the fight sequences and acting, and the film succeeds exceptionally well as a very funny film. Which is one of the reasons I bought the film initially anyway. This is a funny delight of cinema from Hong Kong, and I would recommend to viewers to check it out.
I don't wish to give away too much of the film, therefore, I will leave out some of the funnier sequences from this review. However, I will write that the film centers on one Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam) and his two assistants Chou (Siu-hou Chin) and Man Choi (Ricky Hui). Master Gau is in the business of controlling vampires. Both he and his assistants [bumbling ones at that] are in for one funny romp. They are trying to cope with the rewawakened corpse of a man. However, things backfire, and the viewer is in for one exceptionally funny horror-comedy. In trying to deal with the very strong 'hopping vampires' the film progresses through a maze of slapstick comedy [But in a very good way] as it spoofs Kung Fu and gives a delightfully comedic twist to the horror genre. Also, Chinese bureaucracy and the police are dealt with in a funny and lampooning way.
Yes, there are silly parts in the film, but it's done in a hysterically funny way, and that's what makes this film so funny. Also, while garlic is the recipe in the West for combating Vampires: English and American films in particular, in China--it's sticky rice. I really like this film. It delivers in every way that one will find entertaining. With Master Gau up to his elbows in trying to help his two assistant's Man Choi and Chou from falling prey to the vampire curse they now battle, he also finds himself up against one tough super powerful vampire. Not at all like what we see in the vampires flicks here in the West. This is a great and entertaining film. I recommend the film highly. I enjoyed the film immensely, and still do. Highly recommended.
Temporarily Hold Your Breath.......2007-03-16
Don't let the title mislead you. The film title should have been translated as Mr. Zoombie instead of Mr. Vampire as these hopping ghosts are what we called zoombie. When the film was first released in the 80's, it was titled as Temporarily Stop Your Breathing. It was an enormous hit throughout Asia. 2 or 3 sequels were made afterwards. It also created a zoombie sensation in Japan. Among the Chinese zoombie movie, this one stood out the most as it succeeded in all three genres that it tried to achieve: action, comedy and horror.
Mr. Vampire, along with Chinese Ghost Story 1, is among my favorite films from the 80's.
Hop, hop and hop.
Sticky rice!.......2006-07-19
"Mr. Vampire" is a movie for people tired of angsty, gorgeous vampires with thick Transylvanian accents.
Instead, this hilarious supernatural comedy has a different kind of vampire -- the superstrong, zombielike "hopping vampire." And dealing with the hopping vampires are a long-suffering Taoist priest and his bumbling assistants, who add all sorts of wacky twists.
Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam) agrees to help the wealthy Yam family move their patriarch's body -- until he sees the undecayed body. Turns out Grandpa is a vampire. And after his bumbling assistants fail to properly restrain the vampire, it gets loose, kills its son, and now the vampire hunters are facing TWO vampires instead of one.
To make matters worse, Man Choi (Ricky Hui) has been infected with vampire toxin, which will turn him into a vampire if they can't cure him with sticky rice, and Chou (Siu-hou Chin) is being seduced at night by a ghost. Master Gau must cure one, save the other, and somehow destroy a superpowerful vampire that invades the Yam household.
"Mr. Vampire" was such a success in China that it started a whole trend of "hopping vampire" movies. But as with most trends, the original is still the best and more entertaining example. And it incorporates traditional vampires and succubi from China, as well as little-known mythical trivia (such as sticky rice being the "garlic" for a Chinese vampire).
Expect lots of Peter Jacksonish twisted humor (Man Choi having his fangs filed down) alongside the more typical kind (Chou and Man Choi cast a spell to make their romantic rival strip in public). But when the vampires show up, there are plenty of wild, undignified action scenes. And lots of property damage -- they break every piece of furniture they come across.
The late Ching-Ying Lam became a star thanks to this movie, and his staid, unibrowed priest is a likable guy when you consider everything he has to deal with. Hui and Chin are hysterical as a pair of earnest but hormonal guys. They're kind of an annoyance when Gau isn't actually fighting vampires, but perhaps they're good for doing errands.
(Fortunately they also cleaned up the subtitling on this movie. The original subtitling was comically bad, but the new ones are are very well done)
"Mr Vampire" is one of China's better supernatural comedies, with weird vampires and lots of sticky rice. Hysterical and warped.
A classic film of undead martial arts tomfoolery.......2006-02-27
Very good.
The performances are excellent, and the broad humor is genuinely amusing. There's also a heck of a weird story with hopping vampires and a ghost lover. The Asian sensibility of these elements is what pushes this into the forefront. These are not Bram Stoker's undead, and even the ghost is much more physical than you'd ever see in an American film. And she can even shoot off her head, which is pretty damn neat.
This is an excellent movie for anyone looking for monsters, martial arts, and a healthy dose of humor. Can't recommend it enough. So see it already.
Chinese ghost tale keeps things hopping.......2005-09-23
Sifu, the One Eyebrow Priest, needs all his skill to vanquish a powerful "hopping ghost"(like Hsien-Ko in "Darkstalkers," but more vicious) without much help from his two likeable, less-than-bright pupils. A bite from this creature will turn the bitten one into another vampire-zombie-ghost. Quick, get the sticky rice!

Van Helsing: The London Assignment is a wild and clever animated prequel, slightly more than a half-hour, to the live-action hit film about 19th-century monster hunter Dr. Gabriel Van Helsing. Set just before actor Hugh Jackman's dark hero heads off for battle with Count Dracula in Eastern Europe, The London Assignment finds Van Helsing attempting to stop Dr. Jekyll, and the latter's terrifying associate, Mr. Hyde, from their bizarre and bloody quest to turn septuagenarian Queen Victoria into a lovelorn girl again. While the widescreen artistry is often brutal, it is also breathtaking, especially in a fantastic chase sequence involving train cars. Besides Jackman, several actors from the feature lend voices to their cartoon counterparts, including Robbie Coltrane (as Hyde), Alun Armstrong (as Cardinal Jinette), and David Wenhman (as sidekick Carl). Special features include an incisive interview with Jackman about his character. --Tom Keogh
Description
Combining thrilling adventure and cutting edge animation, Van Helsing: The London Assignment is the original prequel that unlocks the incredible story behind Van Helsing and Mr. Hyde. With the city in a panic, the Knights of the Holy Order send Van Helsing into London with the mission of tracking down and capturing the evil Mr. Hyde. Featuring the voice of Hugh Jackman, this original animated film will thrill you with non-stop adventure and give you an inside look into the world of Van Helsing.
Customer Reviews:
A New Opening.......2007-01-10
The Van Helsing movie opens with Van Helsing in a final battle with Mr. Hyde in Paris. This short animated adventure tells you how he got to that point. Van Helsing and Carl travel to London to investigate some sinister killings of young prostitutes. But the chase leads to far more complex plots than just the killing on young women.
Van Helsing gets tied up in a plot that involved Dr. Jekyll who is physician to Queen Victoria. The not-so-good doctor is obsessed with the Queen and has devised a plot to further his own ends with her. As we know from the full-length movie, Mr. Hyde manages to get to Paris. I won't reveal who the battles progress or the details of the plot but I found it to be rather entertaining. Other than Mr. Hyde being huge (taken from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) unlike in Stevenson's book where Hyde is smaller than Jekyll, the story doesn't twist his tale as much as that of Dracula in the longer feature.
The animation is clean and the voices are true (Hugh Jackman and others from the feature film). If you enjoyed the feature film then you are sure to enjoy this one as it is very true to the movie (other than Carl being in the field). Check it out.
Van Helsing.......2006-08-17
I rate this cartoon movie at three stars, but the documentary is worthy of 5 stars. Its actually worth the price just for the documentary. Its basically a great making of feature about the 2004 Van Helsing film.
good.......2005-11-16
This movie is reasonably good. It's something to watch when you're bored but don't want to sit through a long, gritty movie. The London Assignment is short, sweet, and packs quite a bit into it.
"Van-Fluff", the perfect way to describe it........2005-09-04
This over all prequel to motion picture is just an overblown fluff piece that could have been saved or perhaps will show up on the eventual DVD release of Van Helsing.
The animation feature is nicely done and the sound is great. The supliments are more or less a kind of press junket for te feature film follow-up.
At only a half-hour running time, you wish it was at least 80 mins. Hugh Jackman and the cast provide voice talent to bring this 'teaser' to life.
Rating: 3 1/2 stars out of 5
Even Worse Than The Movie.......2005-05-27
Well, they did it with the Riddick series and it succeded, so I guess Universal decided it would work for Van Helsing as well. This is one of the hugest pieces of crap I've ever seen make it to DVD. Everything about it including the music and voices make it seem like some episode of a boring Saturday morning cartoon. From the first minute of it I was wishing for it to be over, and when it was I was happier than ever. If you didn't like the movie you'll probably hate this, likewise if you didn't like this but haven't seen the movie I doubt you'll like it either. If you liked the movie and haven't seen this I can't guarantee you'll like this short. Universal Studios have never sank so low in the history of their moviemaking.

The ever popular MR.VAMPIRE saga continues in this third installment, now finally on DVD! When a group of supernatural horse thieves and vengeance-seeking ghosts are terrorizing the neighborhood, the always-reliable Taoist master (the late Lam Ching Ying reprising his famous role from the first film) is once again summoned to fight against evil. Co-starring the great SAMMO HUNG and COREY YUEN (Action director of Jet Li's KISS OF THE DRAGON and THE ONE), MR. VAMPIRE 3 is otherworldly kung fu at its finest!
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not Great.......2007-01-20
From a western vampire-film fan who does not know a great deal about Taoism or Chinese folklore, I would say that this film is funny and entertaining but not nearly as good as the first one. The plot is interesting, the special effects are competent, there's a lot of neat "Taoist magic" moments, there's a few cool stunts, and the acting overall is good (considering this film is intended to be goofy); nevertheless, Mr. Vampire 3 just doesn't deliver as well as Mr Vampire 1. My two biggest complaints are that the apprentices in this installment are not as likeable or as believable as the first film's duo, and the pacing isn't nearly as good. This latter may not sound like a big problem, but in a film whose major appeal lies in suspense and humour, it really is.
In sum: if you liked the first film, you'll probably like this one too, but it feels very much like a sequel (if you know what I mean).
Simply Fun!.......2003-08-08
I really like the Mr. Vampire series. Volume 3 was much better than volume 2. In Volume 3, Mr. Vampire is confronted by a rogue priest (Uncle Ming) who uses the disembodied ghosts of his 2 nephews to bilk victims out of cash. When Mr. Vampire and Ming meet, Mr. Vampire's genuine personality and honorable nature eventually wins the rogue over, and they become friends. Together, they team up to fight a group of supernatural mongols who raid the town seeking to rape, burn. and pillage. (Of course, what else?)
This was a great episode. In particular I like the inclusion of the two ghosts. They were 'good ghosts' who spent their time looking after their 'uncle.' I felt sorry for them, and hoped they might be so way to be resurrected Unfortunately not. Also, the villain's motivation was not quite clear. The Mongol's were led by an evil woman with a cat skull (?) inlaid tiara. I never quite got, her relationship to the two men she tried so hard to rescue. Was one her boyfriend? Or her brothers? What? Even though she was evil, I felt impressed by her loyalty.
Things I could do without? The melted 'blob' ghosts. These were disgusting, and the accompanying repulsive 'squishy' sounds they make as they fought almost turned my stomach. Otherwise! Excellent. Well worth a viewing! A+++

A new approach to an old theme.......2005-10-19
Alan is what "American Idol" would term, a triple threat. Not only is he a gifted musician, songwriter, and arranger - he is an exceptional director who brings stunning color, backdrops, and a keen continuity to his work. It is apparent he is respected by the cast as their individual chatacters are brought to life with zest and determination. J and H has been done and redone to the nth degree, but this film is not to be passed over as another effort to rework a tired story. Its new, refreshing, vibrant, serious; one to watch again and again.
A dynamite interpretation with awesome music.......2005-10-18
This project is worth listening to, watching and most of all, owning! Each time I see it I find something new. The music is very haunting, and yes, you can sing along to it -- unlike some more recent musicals. Bernhoft/Champagne are a duo to be watched and to be reckoned with. Give them the support that they deserve and have definitely earned.
Don't miss this version of Dr. Jekyll.......2005-10-16
Completely enjoyable, contemporized version of Jekyll and Hyde. One that gives new life and perspective to an old tale. Great original music helps to set the story. The true mark of how good this music really is--finding yourself singing the songs!

Cute, not as good as the first, but still funny..........2003-08-06
This is the second DVD in the "Mr. Vampire" saga, staring this time a modern day larcenous Professor and his two college interns. In this installment, the professor unearths a century old tomb with the remains of a woman, a man, and a child. (If you've saw the first Mr. Vampire, you might recognize the magic spells attached to each corpses forehead as spells to prevent the dead from rising).
Of course the 'professor' being more intent on STEALING from the tomb, doesn't notice this. He takes the bodies back to the lab, and his assistant inadvertently remove the spells...Surprise, they revive. Although the professor manages to contain the adults, the child vampire escapes, causing many amusing hijinks.
While I liked Mr. Vampire 2, some elements I could have lived without. The one assistant who killed and ate things like frogs, and the innards of snakes (while they were still alive) for 'tonics', just grossed me out and seemed to have been added for shock value. Also, the 'cutsie' scenes with the child-vampire and the Chinese single-parent family just went on WAY too long. I mean, a little is okay 20 minutes is overkill.
Overall, though, quite amusing. A funny edition to the Mr. Vampire Saga
The eternal Sifu Returns for another round........2000-11-03
Again the eternal Sifu Lam Ching Ying Returns to use his taoist powers to supress a vampire infestation in our world . This time Lam (Sifu) fights the dark vampire family brought back to life by some idiotic cave explorers. The comedy element is high in this film as it is in the other Mr. Vampire saga Films. This time we have a little munchkin of a vampire boy that befriends and plays with some children that hide him in there closet. The parents also reawakend are searching the city for there child whos busy playing and spooking other kids from the neighborhood. Lam and his funny students of the arts have a hell of a time with the vampire parents that are wreaking hilarious havok on the locals and even are hopping across cartops at one point.Lam and crew work with all there taoist arts to comabet the vampire family yet are somewhat compassionate to the little vampire boy.More comedy antics in this 2nd installment in the Mr. Vampire series a must see and highly recommended. We also see more of the taoist magic and spells used to combat the vampyric chinese undead.

Not example "New".......2006-08-03
Technically, "New Mr. Vampire" is not part of the "Mr. Vampire" series of comic/martial arts/horror movies.
Sure, it has the gross-looking zombies, inept military and bumbling ghost hunters. But it doesn't star Ching-Ying Lam and it doesn't really connect to the other "Mr. Vampire" movies. But it is a moderately entertaining horror/comedy with some funny subplots and wacky acting.
The movie opens with an inept grave robber setting loose a vampire, which reignites the feud between Master Chin (Chung Fat) and his old schoolmate Wu (Chin Yuet-sang), rival ghost hunters who also live across the street. Both are called in by a local gangster for the honor of burying his dead brother, and Chin's more stylish and sensitive approach gets him the job.
Unfortunately, Wu turns the corpse into a vampire along the way, as Chin and his apprentice try to deal with the same graverobber, who is being followed by a pretty zombie. To make matters worse, the zombie is the former girlfriend of a local dictator, and Wu enhances the vampire's strength -- and causes it to only attack Chin.
"New Mr. Vampire" is pretty typical of the many "hopping vampire" movies that followed "Mr. Vampire," although the vampires in here don't hop (they stagger or run). Basically it's not particularly excellent in any way, but it is entertaining in a run-around-screaming-with-a-rotted-vampire-running-after-you manner.
The plot tends to lag in places, and the dialogue is pretty tepid, without any really memorable one-liners. The comedy is mostly provided by the absurdist fights with the vampire, and the pretty zombie who is bound to mimic the graverobber's every move -- which makes slow-dancing with her still-living boyfriend an interesting experience.
Chung Fat is no Ching-Ying Lam, but he is a pretty entertaining vampire hunter who uses too much hair gel, but is still infinitely smarter than his slimy rival. His sidekick is pretty useless, and I suspect he was put in just for infodumping. And there's a dual performance stolen by Pauline Wong and Siu-hou Chin, who have to do the same expressions and motions all the time -- even in the bathroom, which makes things awkward.
"New Mr. Vampire" is pretty typical of the cash-in "hopping vampires" genre, but is still fairly entertaining in a forgettable kind of way.
Give it a try if you're looking for something different..........2003-02-02
First, let me state that I was expecting a hopping vampire movie, but unfortunately the vampire does not hop. Aside from my initial disappointment, I thought New Mr. Vampire was a very entertaining movie. The plot concerns two rival ghost hunters. One is commissioned to bury a dead gangster. The other decides to sabotage the mission by making sure the corpse comes back to life as a vampire. Along the way they run into a grave robber who happens to have accidentally resurrected a woman. The dead woman mimics his every move, which is a really interesting concept and leads to many funny situations. Most of the action takes place in a hotel. I think the movie would have been better off subtitled in English rather than dubbed, but this is still a great little Kung fu-vampire-horror-comedy, and worth buying if your tastes in movies is on the eclectic side. Be sure to get a hold of the original Mr. Vampire as well as Mr. Vampire 3, which, in my opinion, is the best of these movies.
Vampires, Zombies, and Kung Fu!.......2002-09-14
I've recently stumbled into the genre of Kung Fu vampire flicks and found New Mr. Vampire to be quite entertaining.
The story centers around a Ghost Chaser, his student, and a grave robber. The story begins when the ghost chaser and his studnet accept a job of burying a dead ganster in his home town. Along the way they pick up the grave robber who has a number nine concubine zombie girl chasing him. She follows him and does exactly what the grave robber does due to the fact that she's bound to him. Behind the scenes a rival ghost chaser revives the dead ganster and turns him into a vampire. The story progresses and lends itself to several humourous situations. Particularly between the grave robber and his mimicing ghost played by Pauline Wong. I also agree that she does an excellent job of shadowing the grave robber, and adds a lot of light hearted moments to the film.
The story is really a comedy and should be viewed as such. Although there is some Kung Fu in the movie, it's not the focus of the film. There's also an audio commentary by Ric Meyers included on the DVD version which explains a little bit about the orgin of Chinese Vampires. He does point out that the Vampires don't hop like they do in the original Mr. Vampire, and Spooky Encouters by Sammo Hung, but that did'nt really bother me. The U.S. has potrayed vampires many different ways, so I don't see a problem with different Hong Kong versions.
If your curious about New Mr. Vampire and want a good laugh, give it a try. I think you'll enjoy it. Escpecially around Halloween. Oh, and it is a tad bit scary too. Just a tad.
Good comedy, but not really Mr. Vampire.......2002-03-04
"New Mr. Vampire" is a pretty solid Chinese Vampire comedy, though
it's not really part of the "Mr. Vampire" series. It doesn' star Lam
Ching Ying, for starters, despite being made about a year after the
original Mr. Vampire.
Also, the vampires don't hop. That may sound
like a weird complaint if you've never seen any Mr. Vampire movies,
but since the whole Chinese vampire genre is often called "hopping
vampire" movies, it is something I really miss. (In case you're
wondering, Chinese vampires hop because the ground hurts their feet
when they walk).
Such niggling complaints aside, though, "New
Mr. Vampire" is a very funny movie. The plot is not terribly deep or
complex, but the walking corpses provide a steady stream of excellent
slapstick.
Pauline Wong Siu Fung in particular is outstanding as a
corpse whose essence becomes tied to a grave robber's, such that she
moves exactly the way he does. Her ability to mimic his movements is
amazing.
The action scenes are also quite well done, striking a good
balance of comedy and kung fu butt kicking.
My major complaint about
this DVD is that it does not have a Chinese language soundtrack, and
the dubbing is done with those typical cartoonish bad Kung Fu movie
voices. When is Tai Seng going to realize that they don't have to get
rid of the Chinese audio track when they dub something? Subtitling is
cheap, especially since they've previously released a subtitled
version of this movie.
The English language commentary on this DVD
is OK, though it was geared toward someone who had no idea what they
were watching. The DVD transfer quality is decent, though again,
nothing very exciting.
