Whether or not you can sympathize with its fascistic/vigilante approach to law enforcement, Dirty Harry (directed by star Clint Eastwood's longtime friend and directorial mentor, Don Siegel) is one hell of a cop thriller. The movie makes evocative use of its San Francisco locations as cop Harry Callahan (Eastwood) tracks the elusive "Scorpio killer" who has been terrorizing the city by the Bay. As the psychopath's trail grows hotter, Harry becomes increasingly impatient and intolerant of the frustrating obstacles (departmental red tape, individuals' civil rights) that he feels are keeping him from doing his job. A characteristically taut and tense piece of filmmaking from Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Shootist, Escape from Alcatraz), it also remains a fascinating slice of American pop culture. It was a big hit (followed by four sequels) that obviously reflected--or exploited--the almost obsessive or paranoid fears and frustrations many Americans felt about crime in the streets. At a time when "law and order" was a familiar slogan for political candidates, Harry Callahan may have represented neither, but from his point of view his job was simple: stop criminals. To him that end justified any means he deemed necessary. The digital video disc preserves the film's anamorphic widescreen format. --Jim Emerson

There's no mistaking the 1968 mood of Play Dirty: this cynical war movie could only have been made during the disillusioned Vietnam era, despite its WWII subject. Michael Caine plays a British captain in North Africa, tapped to lead a suicidal mission across the desert to destroy a German fuel depot. He's got a scurvy band of mercenaries to help him (this was a year after The Dirty Dozen, so keep that in mind), although most of the time they seem indifferent to both the job and Caine's survival. Nigel Davenport plays Caine's black-hearted yet lethally competent assistant, possibly the most nihilistic character on the side of the good guys in any war movie. Large patches of the film play without dialogue, including a grueling sequence in which vehicles are winched up the side of a hill, but somehow this adds to the grim, fatalistic atmosphere. The hard edge suits the style of director Andre De Toth, veteran maker of many a B-picture (this was his next-to-last effort). Caine plays it repressed and close to the vest, the better to contrast with Davenport's Mephistophelian soldier of fortune. Oh, and the ending--well, you'll want to stick around for the ending. It was 1968, after all. --Robert Horton

Old Classic, Finally on DVD.......2007-06-14
This movie by the way, was filmed in Panavision, incorrectly described on Amazon as having a full screen 1:33:1 ratio, when in reality has been released in it's original widescreen 1:85:1 ratio. It's a classic WWII British Long Range Patrol action movie set in the North African Lybian dessert, where the Italian and German Afrika Corp troops are the bad guys. Excellent color with crisp clean restored print. RECOMMEND HIGHLY for serious WWII movie fans!!!!!!!
Great WWII adventure, even better ending.......2007-02-13
Play Dirty is an excellent WWII movie set in Africa that is in the mold of Tobruk and The Rat Patrol. British Colonel Masters is head of a less than elite group of commandos who has come under the wrath of his superiors. With one last chance to save his skin, Masters organizes a raid deep behind German lines to blow up a crucial German fuel depot. But part of the agreement of the mission is that a British officer or engineer with some knowledge on the subject lead Masters' commandos. Cue Captain Douglas, who immediately clashes with his second in command, Capt. Cyril Leech. Along with six convict-commandos (think Dirty Dozen), Douglas and Leech set across the African desert to blow up the fuel depot. They go up against murdering gypsies, horrific conditions, patrolling Germans, each other, and even their commanders back at headquarters. The movie builds slowly, but still entertaining, to a climax that has to be one of the biggest surprise/shocks ever made. You won't be disappointed. As well, plenty of tense, exciting action scenes, beautiful cinematography, and that fantastic ending make for a great WWII adventure.
In a subdued but still very strong performance, Michael Caine plays Capt. Douglas, the unwilling leader of the group of convict commandos trying to blow up the crucial German fuel depot. He clashes with Capt. Cyril Leech(a great part for Nigel Davenport) the possible double agent who may be working for the Germans as well. The tension over command and strategy between Caine and Davenport drives the movie's plot and is what makes the movie all hold together. Nigel Green, Harry Andrews and Patrick Jordan are good in small parts as the different level of commanders who have control over the mission. Green is especially good as Col. Masters. The rest of the convict-commandos, who don't have much to do in the way of lines, include Aly Ben Ayed as Sadok, Enrique Avila as Kafkarides, Mohsen Ben Abdallah and Mohammed Kouka as Hassan and Assine, the two homosexual desert guides, Takis Emmanuel as Kostos Manou, and Scott Miller as Boudesh. The special features, if there are any, for the upcoming dvd release, April 27th, haven't been released, but I'd be happy to just get widescreen presentation and a trailer. Of course, I'd love to see some interviews with Caine, but that's probably wishful thinking. So for a relatively little known WWII action movie with great performances from Caine and Davenport along with one of the best shocker endings ever, check out Play Dirty!
The Dirty Half Dozen.......2006-06-24
This film was released in 1968. Michael Caine is an oil company executive in civvy street who has been commisioned only to handle fuel deliveries at ports in N. Africa in WWII. If you liked the Dirty Dozen you will love this film. This film is real. The "officers" are great character actors you have seen in many British films. The uniforms, weapons and equipment are correct. Scenes of the desert are so real you feel the heat. The mission is real. The ending is a stunner. This film was made in Panavision, see it in that mode.

One of the 70's best.......2007-06-22
In terms of acting this is perhaps the role that defined Clint Eastwood as a movie icon. The reasons for this are threefold:
1. Its directed by Don Siegel, so not a shot is wasted (a big influence on Clint Eastwoods later directing career).
2. The screenplay gives Eastwood the chance to deliver some classic lines.
3. The rest of the cast are excellent. Particularly John Vernon as The Mayor and the exceptional Andrew Robinson as Scorpio.
Of course Eastwood himself should be given as much credit as anyone. He wasn't the first choice for the movie, but if somebodyelse had taken the leading role it wouldn't have had the same impact. Eastwood's huge screen presence, and caustic delivery of his lines is unmatched in cinema history. I'm not saying he's the greatest actor, he is good though, but what he lacks in pure acting ability he more than makes up for in these other qualities.
It would be amazing if you haven't seen this film, but if you are of the generation born after this was made and have somehow missed it I recommend buying the DVD without delay. For those that have seen it many many times (like me) it holds up to repeated viewings so its still worth buying, to see it in widescreen with 5.1 sound.
Made Me Want To Be a Vigilante!.......2007-04-24
I'm told that whenever I got riled up in the baby-blue crib, my parents would play Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow album -- and I would get blissed out! My parents *kept* playing the album through the years, and by age 4 it hit me: My parents are hippies! I realized there was a total lack of law and order in the house! A major power vacuum! By age 5, I had a watershed moment: My friends' family took me to the drive in -- and we saw Dirty Harry. I never felt so alive or less alone! I stopped the dream of being a pop star artfully sweeping hair out of my wide eyes to croon a new decree. No, sir. I wanted to be a cop on the edge! (Thanks Dirty Harry!)
I started training right away. When my neighbors pulled out of their driveway, I would run and jump on the hood of their van! The hood was painted in day-glo, and sprayed in lime green was the word "Further". Further? I don't think so scruffs!
"Hey man, this is OUR love-van!"
"And this is MY "Goof-Off" paint remover, Clyde!"
I would have wiped the painted flowers off their cheeks too, and turned their van inside-out -- if it wasn't for those damn liberals' search and seizure laws. Damn them! Alright then, keep it moving beatniks, get out of here. Show's over everybody.
If someone with long hair or fringe walked down the sidewalk with groceries, I would tug on their wide belt and shake them down -- "Where's the stuff!" When they inevitably feigned ignorance, I knew they were hiding something. It was all part of their "game."
And when a hippie approached and started to "rap" with my older sister, I would run out to the front yard and tumble - coming up on one knee with my squirtgun, ordering, "Let her go!" My sister was supposed to reply, "Don't worry about me! Take him out!" Instead, she would say, "Get out of here, you creep!"
Under pressure from the "community" (a hippy word if I ever heard one), my dad called me to his backyard herb garden. He sat me down on the macrame hanging "loveseat" and said, "Your mom's been riding my rump about you. Maybe you need a vacation, man. You seem on edge." I replied, "Yeah. That's pretty much what I do - I'm a cop on the edge. It's my job." Hippies. I considered myself a vigilante, a one man judge and jury. My mom considered me a "fascist." You say tomato.... After my mom refused to get me the Dirty Harry lunchbox, we communicated less than the US and China in the pre-Nixon years. (Or less than Dirty Harry and shaggy hippies).
But that was all a long time ago. My parents and I are now closer than ever. We agree to disagree, and "leave politics at the door". They still enjoy the sounds of Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow, as "one of the most brazen low-fi psychedelic freakout records anywhere." Meanwhile, I enjoy bow-hunting while playing Ted Nugent on the discman. Anyway, I still believe that if more people were like the hard-charging Dirty Harry this country might be nearly hippie free. This DVD is great for entertainment and life lessons. Watch the film at least 3 times, and take notes. You may learn something about the greatest country on God's green earth. And you just may learn something about yourself.
HOW TO YOU DEAL WITH A PSYCHOPATH? SEND ANOTHER PSYCHOPATH AFTER HIM.......2007-03-05
The more I watch "Dirty Harry" the more this movie stands out, not only as a classic example of 70s American cinema, but it illustrates in no uncertain terms that the meek will not herit the earth. Andrew Robinson's character, Scorpio, turns in a performance like no other; he is brilliantly over-the-top in his craziness. But the kudos must go the world-weary and violent Det. Harry Calahan. Clint Eastwood turns in an extraordinary performance as the cool and remorseless Calahan. For Calahan, the only thing the Justice System is meant to do is protect the criminals. If Calahan has his way, every criminal would get a bullet in the head and a second one for good measure. One cannot help but cheer on Calahan as he tortures confessions out of criminals and puts his .44 Magnum in their faces and asks them, "Do they feel lucky?" Yeah, I can get used to justice Harry Calahan's way. Even in the scene of the night time drives through the city's filthy redlight districts, one cannot help but believe if we killed everyone on that street at that moment, the world would be a better place. As for the Justice System, their belief that they are the guardians of all that is civilized and good is nonsense when they are the first to defend the criminals' rights before the victims. When Calahan asks the D.A. "Who speaks for this dead 14 year old girl?" all the D.A. can do is offer excuses and wax on about the integrity of the law and the courts. Obviously, the guardians of civilization are powerless in the face of real evil. We need more Calahans to clean our streets, and then civilization will survive.
This Could Never Be Made Today.......2007-02-23
A lot of aspects of this movie are a bit dated. For example, the violence is cartoonish and unrealistic. The blood in the movie looks fake. And the city itself acts unrealistic. People went about their daily business even though a sniper was in their midst. In reality, mass panic would ensue, like it did in the DC area a few years ago,
With that said, the story here was awesome. One man, standing for what's right, going after the evil criminal despite being blocked every step of the way by bureaucracy and bleeding-heart lawyers.
A movie like this would never be made today, because our society has become too feminized and liberal. For that reason, 5 stars all the way.
The Begining of the Dirty Harry ERA.......2007-01-29
This was the beginning of Clint Eastwood era of 5 Dirty Harry films. Eastwood plays the role of Inspector Harry Callahan who works for the police department in San Francisco. Reni Santoni plays the role of Lt. Al Bressler, Harry's partner. Andrew Robinson plays the role of Scorpio killer. Robinson holds the city of San Francisco hostage when he wants money in return of the life of the woman he's kidnapped. Eastwood thrives in his role as Dirty Harry taking no prisoners when going after the bad guy. Robinson is arrested and then release do to the evident that was retrieved by illegal Robinson is released by the DA. When Robinson claims that the police department is harassing Callahan is told by Lt. Al Bressler to not go near him Callahan does what he usually does and that's disobey orders.

It's "Classic Clint!!!!!" Enough said!.......2007-07-01
The movies sell themselves. However, they are not the first in the "Dirty Harry" series I was trying to find as a set. It was as close as I could come to it. I had a hard time finding these the way it was. I'll have to purchase "Sudden Impact" seperately.
This was also the best price I could find on the web from a reputable source. Fast delivery. Very Satisfied.
Thanks Amazon!!!!!!
A good deal.......2007-04-23
When you figure that all these movies go for about 13-15 dollars each elsewhere, it's a good deal. Individually, the choice of movies is odd. While the first two Dirty Harry movies are the better of the series, and entertaining, the psychological horror of tightrope almost feels misplaced. Perhaps Dirty Harry, tightrope, and another non-dirty harry copy movie would have been better. Regardless, the movies themselves are all good, and worthy of purchase.
Clint Eastwood-Dirty Harry.......2007-02-20
If you are a "Dirty Harry" fan this set is a must. wonderful. I wish more of the movies were on DVD.

Description
Atten-hut! Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin lead these tales of combat that mix firepower with tongue-in-cheek attitude. Eastwood's misfit troops are in the army and in the money when they slip behind enemy lines to steal Nazi gold. Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas and Don Rickles are among the larcenous heroes in Kelly's Heroes [Side A]. The Dirty Dozen [Side B] is the influential granddaddy of hard-hitting ensemble action flicks, a tale of jailed losers volunteered in the army way for a suicide mission. Marvin plays the tough-as-nails major who bullies his squad (Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, Sutherland, Savalas and more) into a fighting unit that can win this war any of a dozen ways. Fall in for action!

Deceptive Packaging.......2007-06-05
I already own both films but purchased this as the case described "Dirty Dozen" as being a 16x9 transfer. It is not. Further, special features are listed for this film that are not actually on the disc. I knew I was in trouble when the film began with the Turner logo. Old transfer. "Kelly's Heroes" IS 16x9 as it was on the single feature release.
In addition, it appears the newly repackaged "How the West Was Won" suffers from the same deceptive packaging by being labeled "enhanced for widescreen TVs" when it is not and is also an old Turner master.
People are bound to complain so it's hard to believe Warner Home Video, previously very reliable, would do this intentionally. Something is defintely wrong in their QC department these days.

Canines star in each of three adaptations of famous children's books: Gene Zion's Harry the Dirty Dog, Peggy Rathmann's Officer Buckle and Gloria, and Marjorie Flack's Angus and the Ducks. When Harry, a white dog with black spots, runs away at bath time, his playful curiosity soon finds him filthy and longing for his family. Imagine his surprise when his family doesn't recognize this strange black dog with white spots. Gloria, a newly acquired police dog, brings a fresh life and enthusiasm to Officer Buckle's previously monotonous school safety speeches, but when Officer Buckle discovers that he's being out-shone the newfound friendship is threatened. Both Harry the Dirty Dog and Officer Buckle and Gloria are animated presentations that faithfully adhere to the original illustrations. In stark contrast, Angus and the Ducks features real-life photography of a curious young Scottie Dog that goes exploring to see just what's making the funny noise on the other side of the tall green hedge. This gift for my five (5) year old granddaughter was a hit. She has watched it several times and loves it just as much each time. I would recommend it to others.
WONDERFUL tool for enhancing, enriching reading for tots!!.......2004-05-26
My son (just-turned-three) and I had just picked up Harry the Dirty Dog from the library when my mom purchased this video for us. It is a WONDERFUL, magical way to enhance the reading experience! The video animation is a direct copy of the book's illustrations--so it really feels like the illustrations have magically sprung to life. My son and I cuddled up in bed together with the book before bedtime, reading and watching simultaneously. My son LOVED it so much that we bought the other books featured on the video and have made this a regular bedtime ritual.
The narrations are first-rate and slowly paced so that you can easily read along and turn pages as you watch.
I highly recommend this and the other video (the one with Good Night Gorilla, which is just as excellent) to any parent or educator in search of a way to enhance and enrich a child's reading experience. Research has shown that children who hear words and see them at the same time can improve their reading abilities--and this is a FUN way to do this!
Harry, Gloria and Angus.......2003-09-05
This DVD has three wonderful dog stories as well as three bonus stories.
Harry the Dirty Dog is about a small white dog with black spots. One day he get so dirty that he becomes a black dog with white spots and finally agrees to a bath. Nicely done and narrated. Very close to the original story.
Officer Buckle and Gloria is about a safety conscious police man who finally manages to get his message across with the help of the talented police dog Gloria. John Lithgow dos a great job with this one. The story includes a scene of Officer Buckle testing Gloria's training. Otherwise it is right on with the book.
Angus and the Ducks is about a curious Scottie who finally finds out what is making the quackity quack noises on the other side of the hedge. This one is live action and includes Angus with his siblings and being taken to his new home, walks in the park and other small differences from the original book.
The Beast of Monsieur Racine is about a champion pear-grower who finds a mysterious beast in his garden one night and stuns the scientific community. I am not familiar with the book but found the narration choppy and the animation crude.
14 Rats and a Rat-Catcher is a two-sided story about an old lady in her cottage and the rats that live underneath (or the rats' cottage and the horrible lady who lives above). Another book I am not familiar with but nicely done.
John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat is about an old lady, her jealous sheep dog and a cat that visits the garden at night. Another book I do not know. The animation was a series of stills (no actual movement anywhere in the story).
I bought this one as the three main stories are all favorites in the family.

Five--count 'em, five--chances to wallow in the shoot-first, ask-questions-later ethos of San Francisco cop Harry Callahan, who became a signature character for actor Clint Eastwood. The first one, Dirty Harry, is the best, a Don Siegel film in which Harry flouts rules about police brutality to capture a serial killer. In Magnum Force he tracks rogue cops and utters his "Do you feel lucky, punk?" speech. In The Enforcer he gets a female partner (future Cagney and Lacy star Tyne Daly). Sudden Impact featured him tracking a female serial killer and offered a new catch phrase: "Go ahead. Make my day." And The Dead Pool, aside from offering a smart little chase involving a radio-controlled model car, brought him face to face with Liam Neeson. You can't ask for much more firepower in one box than this. --Marshall Fine

70s Gold.......2007-06-24
I love films like these.Only have the first two though. Hoping for a new box set in the near future with more features.
Husband loved it!.......2007-05-07
They just don't make cop movies like they used to. My favorite part were the 'making of' films for the first three movies. They were narrated by the guy from Dragnet.
Do yourself a favor -- you may find this set cheaper someplace else on the web. But you should buy it here. This was originally my hubbie's Valentine's Day gift. He didn't get it until a month later because I was trying to be cheap. Two other online vendors couldn't deliver (and getting refunds was a nightmare). I ordered it here and three business days later I had it in hand.
Magnificent "CLINT".......2007-01-10
Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan has style. All 5 movies watched in a sequence are a treat for action fans. Plots are well set & keep you gripped throughout. Never a dull moment. A must buy for action lovers.
Great collection and gift idea.......2007-01-09
This Dirty Harry collection is a great gift idea. I gave it to my husband for Christmas and he loved it!

This was a gift for a soldier in Iraq. He appreciated a touch of home.

The Hunting of the President, a documentary examining the Republican campaign to discredit Bill Clinton's presidency, unfolds like a paranoid thriller--made all the more astonishing by scrupulous documentation and an impressive breadth of interviews with journalists, lawyers, political analysts, judges, newspaper editors, and many of the people caught up in the Whitewater scandal--which, after an expense of many millions of dollars and several years of investigation, failed to find any criminal act. The relentless efforts of Clinton's enemies grow into an appalling abuse of power, ultimately resulting in his impeachment (but not his removal from office). This documentary, like those of Michael Moore (Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11), uses brief clips from Hollywood movies and television to give a boost to the narrative; this could seem cloying, but The Hunting of the President presents such an impressive barrage of facts and perspectives that it earns some moments of flippancy. --Bret Fetzer
Description
The Hunting of the President is the story of a sustained and well-funded effort to discredit and defeat Bill Clinton, dating from his gubernatorial days in Arkansas and eventually leading to his impeachment trial. The film also acknowledges that Clinton?s reckless behavior, along with the ?panicky, defensive, and occasionally less-than-perfectly honest? responses from the White House press office, didn?t hurt his opponents. Investigative journalism at its juiciest, The Hunting of the President is a surprising valediction to a far-from-angelic public leader who often outmaneuvered his enemies with otherworldly skill.

more polical truth.......2007-01-19
find out what really happened during the Clinton Administration. Get a good inside look at the propaganda machine of the right and how mean spirited and hypocritical they are.
Great Information.......2007-01-12
The Information in this documentary is excellent! This is a story that needed to be told. However, I feel that it ought to be Told again, only by a film-maker. I love Joe Conason, yet let's call Micheal Moore for the next one.
More on President Clinton.......2007-01-10
This is an interesting documentary on the Presidency of Clinton. Worth watching, but probably not something you will watch over and over.
"Hunting of the President" missed the mark.......2006-03-07
The material was powerful, Morgan Freeman's delivery was great. However, the cartoon/old movie clip material was frustratingly off-point and distracting. What could/should have been an analysis of the political dealings of the right wing of the Republican party and a wake-up call to America, became an erratic difficult-to-follow series of interviews. I was disappointed.
The Hunting of the President.......2006-02-24
This was a very good DVD. It answered a lot of questions for me. It was very well done. I would hightly recommend this DVD.
