Highly underrated.......2007-02-23
I remember seeing Trancers on cable back in the mid-eighties. This film, although a very cheap B-movie, has got so much style that you can't help but love it. Obviously, the movie "borrows" much of its style and visuals from Blade Runner as well as the characterization of the protagonist, Jack Deth, but even so, Tim Thomerson's performance, a brilliant soundtrack, and a VERY original plot and story line combine to make Trancers a cult classic. The sequels never quite measured up to the original (which is usually the case), so the first film alone is worthy of any DVD collection. Aside from occasional foul language and "suggestive" sex scenes (no nudity), the older kids might be able to enjoy this one with mom or dad who probably remember seeing this one back when they were teenagers.
Bottom line: if you like action films, you gotta see this one. If you like sci-fi films: you gotta see this one. If you like Tim Thomerson, you gotta see this film.
What are you waiting for?
Trancers: great story, poor dvd.......2007-01-03
I love this story. I mean, after all, with a protagonist named Jack Death, what's not to love?
But the quality bites! The video is fuzzy and glary. What a disappointment.
Guilty Pleasure.......2006-07-09
Well, maybe not too guilty about it, I do like Trancers. Tim Thomerson does a good job of playing the hard boiled, wise cracking detective. Trancers, like the many of the movies from New Moon were low budget, cheesy but very enjoyable to watch. Mr Thomerson did a good job in all of them.
One of those movies..........2006-07-03
...that once you see it you can't seem to get it out of your head, even years later. Finally decided to get my own copy and it was just as much fun as when I saw it years ago. Notable for an early preformance of Helen Hunt.
Trancer I review.......2006-03-24
If you like typical 80's schlock sci-fi, this movie is for you! I loved it when I saw it originally, and still do today! Who doesn't think Tim Thomerson is handsome with his greased-look 80's hair? Helen Hunt always has been one of my favorites also! I only wish the entire series was on DVD, but alas...it's not! Unless you liked it originally when it came out in the 80's you probably won't get it, but my gang liked all of Jack Deth's movies!

Good memories.......2007-03-06
During the home video revolution of the mid-to-late 80's, a low-budget film company called Full Moon Entertainment helped usher in a new genre of films: The direct-to-video feature. These are commonplace today, and often are comprised of cheapskate sequels to successful feature films. I'm not sure if Full Moon was the first company to take this approach, but in the late 80's and early 90's, they did it often and did it. . .well, pretty well. And they wore their low-budget suits like a badge of honor--they were certainly among the first companies to pack their VHS releases with exclusive "making-of" documentaries and sneak peeks at upcoming projects.
For the unintiated, the original TRANCERS (1985) was, in fact, released theatrically in the U.S. The film, set in the near future, was an obvious attempt to cash in on the success of THE TERMINATOR. A future cop with the unlikely name of Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) is sent back through time to protect the ancestors of present-day judges who will sentence a criminal named Whistler to die. Whistler himself pursues Deth, who is befriended by a woman named Lena (a young Helen Hunt). Oh, and Whistler is also creating an army of zombies--"Trancers." It's all done on the cheap, but works surprisingly well. Thomerson is a wry anti-hero--think Kurt Russell's Snake Plisksen if he cared about grooming ("Dry hair is for squids.") and you'll get the picture.
The direct-to-video sequels began in the early 90's, as Full Moon honcho Charles Band was cranking out such cult items as Dollman, Puppet Master and Demonic Toys. TRANCERS 2: THE RETURN OF JACK DETH reunites most of the cast, as Jack struggles to free his thought-to-be-dead wife from a cult. Helen Hunt returns briefly for TRANCERS 3: DETH LIVES, which finds Jack taking on an alien partner named Shark. The back-to-back 4th and 5th installments send Deth and Shark back to medieval times.
Even though I'm a fan of this quirky series, I'll be the first to admit that the quality really decreased with each successive film. The Jack and Lena romance was an integral part of the first 2 films, but of course Helen Hunt was on the verge of real stardom and I'm sure her asking price by 1993 (when TRANCERS 4: Jack of Swords was released) could have financed 2 or 3 complete Full Moon productions. Still, I have fond memories of these films, and eagerly looked forward to the Full Moon "Videozone" bonus materials--which, happily, are preserved for these releases. In fact, these DVD's appear to be direct ports of the VHS versions. It's probably the only DVD release these films will ever get, so if you're a fan, you'll want to go ahead and pick this set up. Most others might like to rent the original film first, and see if you want to invest in this somewhat expensive DVD collection.

Jack Deth lives -- sorta........2007-05-21
An execellent addition to the Transers series. Zette Sullivan plays the role of Jack Deth, in the form of his daughter by Leena Forest. Sullivan is convincing and enoyable in the role, but the movie fails to get five stars because, unlike the other Trancers movies, there are no other characters to care about. The ending implies the possibility of further sequels, but, after five years, these seem unlikely. Too bad.
Good story, bad drama!.......2007-05-13
So, Jack Deth helps his future daughter Josphine continue kill those Tranchers..... Not saying how! But if you like futuristic science fiction with low drama, this movie is for you!!!!!!!!!!!
For a B movie, it's an A..........2007-03-09
...but it's still a B movie.
It should be noted that I did not hear the movie; I am nearly deaf and this flick does not have subtitles.
This is the one where they "upgrade" (pr downgrade, or degrade, however you see it) Jack Deth to Jo Deth. I heard that Yvette Sullivan was cute, which does not do her justice, and I kind of like the idea of switching over from one actor to another to play the same role -- kind of like in Dr. Who. Or James Bond. No question that there was only ONE Jack Deth and Jo can't compete on his level, but she had him beat elsewhere.
For instance: she's wicked awesome hot.
All the usual cliches are here, minus the car chase, which is required by law in most of these films.
A painfully awful outing........2006-05-31
I'm a huge, huge fan of the original Trancers. The rest of the series-- not so much. But at least every outing till now had featured original footage of B-Movie king Tim Thomerson. Trancers 6 has the dubious honor of being the first in the series to use stock footage of Thomerson; basically, Sir B-Movie wanted nothing to do with the project. And I don't blame him; Trancers 6 is edges into the realm of C-Movie. The plot makes little to no sense, the dialogue is forced in principle and acted even worse, and the effects are simply laughable. The old B-Movie style effects from the original Trancers had a certain charm to them, perhaps because they didn't try to do too much. Trancers 6 feels like it was made by an overeager college wannabe that just got his first Avid in the mail. It's truly painful to watch. I didn't get through it in the first round through. Really, Trancers 6 has no redeeming qualities. 1/5 stars.
Don't watch if you are a TRUE fan of Trancers series.......2005-03-30
I am a big fan of the Trancers series. The last one Trancers 5 was supposed to be the last one. I was happy to hear that they are making Trancers 6. But, no Tim Thomerson? They put him on the box cover, but he is not in this film. They use old footage from the other movies and cut and paste.
This time is Jill Deth. Jack Deth goes "down the line" and into his daughter (supposed to be the daughter he had with the character Lena (played by Helen Hunt in parts 1 and 2).
I wouldn't say Trancers of the past are well written, great special effects Sci Fi. Trancers was a very solid B movie. What made Trancers work was star of Tim Thomerson.
Jill Deth character is not going to work for future movies. What this franchise needs is the return of Tim Thomerson. If you want to pass the torch to somebody else, you are going to have find someone who can carry it. Not many people can. They are out there, but this girl who played Jill Deth is not going to cut it.

The Trancers set on dvd, it is about itme. .......2006-06-18
I have loved this set since I was a teenager, I have the first five movies on vhs and now I am going to have them on dvd. I can't wait. Jack Deth is a cop from the future who has to come back in time to stop the bad guys from killing council members ancesters. Jack goes everywhere in time in this set back and forth in time and even to another dymention in Trancers 4 and 5. [...] Also if you are interested Dollman and Subspecies is out too if you are into those movies.
