If only this were an Anne Rice fanfic, it could get banned..........2005-09-04
I heard good things about this anime, so I decided, "What the heck?" I'll give it a shot. The first episode or so things are looking good, but as the series progressed I just got slightly annoyed, perturbed, disturbed...and flat out disappointed.
The first thing I noticed was the soundtrack. I didn't know steel mill machinery counted as an instrument. The minute that God-awful sound came blaring from my speakers my fingers instantly lept for the "skip chapter" button. Later at a friend's house I heard the song starting from the middle, and decided it wasn't so bad. Then I heard it the whole way through again - sorry, but I can't stand that noise.
The other thing I noticed was Shiro is not that capable a hero. He is either constantly foiled, made a fool of, or arrives too late to really save the day since lots of innocent people have already died. If he were Sherlock Holmes he would have killed the Hound of the Baskervilles AFTER it killed Sir Henry Baskerville. One villain doesn't even die by Shiro's hands, they die by getting struck by lightning as if God said, "I AM WHO AM...really ticked off you can't even beat one minor villain."
By the way, whoever wrote the script for this anime really, really, really hates kids. I say this because every kid character either dies or goes through some traumatic experience. There's even one episode where a girl gets killed in front of her friends, they walk off the screen sobbing, and we never get a resolution as to what happened.
The unnecessary violence doesn't end there though. There's one odd sequence where a vampire is rampaging through a subway fighting the police. He goes through them like they were all old women with the flu. Shouldn't the police be better prepared? I know what you're thinking: but they don't know about vampires! Normally that explanation would work, but here the anime kills itself. In an earlier scene the female police detective was speaking with a superior who mentions vampires and the problem they cause. If the police know about vampires, then why don't they prepare for it? At least in the later Godzilla films the Japanese military were portrayed to accurately depict a nation that had been attacked by Godzilla a bunch of times. I also have to say I got a good laugh at the scene where Shiro's highschool girl friend get's turned into a vampire. She goes through the movie with a B-cup, but once her shirt and bra are taken off it suddenly morphs to a DD-cup. I don't know any bra that can withstand that much. It's always amusing in animes how the girl's chest will grow five cup sizes when the clothes are taken off. (take a look at Deedlit's sudden implants at the end of the "Lodoss War" OVA)
I spoke with a female friend of mine who was all up about this series. Main reason? Shiro is cute. Oh yeah, and the villain, Kain, is cute as well. You know, even though he's evil, his good looks are a redeeming quality. Why do fangirls do this? They'll make comments about the way a girl looks, or say a guy will only go after a certain type of girl or say a girl looks a certain way just for the men, then they'll base an entire opinion of a show just on physical appeal of a handful of male characters.
I must now get something off my chest that has been lurking inside me for some time. All you fangirls out there drop your yaoi comics and take note:
JUST BECAUSE THE HERO IS CUTE DOES NOT MAKE THE ANIME GOOD!
Did you get that? Good. I don't think that people liked "Lawrence of Arabia" just because girls swooned when Peter O'Toole took his shirt off. And remember: if Hitler had long flowing hair, well-defined cheekbones, a great outfit, and a sexy smile...he'd still be scum.
Wow! This anime series is awesome!.......2005-09-03
Way back when, my friend was telling me about an anime series. "It's pretty cool!" she said, "The main character is a vampire, and he has this cute little fairy partner! It's called Nightwalker!" She didn't give me a very detailed plotline, but she had only seen one or two episodes. Anyway, I forgot about it for a week or so, until one day I saw it and decided to pick it up.
I was not disappointed. I ended up watching the second DVD first by accident, but oh well. I don't know why people keep calling this anime series clichéd...it's not. There are some parts that are, but that didn't really detract from the series. There are a bunch of original things to enjoy as well though. For instance, I thought it was truly unique that the vampires could make weapons out of their own blood. Shido has a sword, and Cain has a whip. Well, actually they can both use either one, but they usually stick to their respective weapons. Also, I like the little detail that their eyes can change gold when they're in full "vampire mode." (No, that's not what they actually call it.)
Another original aspect is the breed. The breed are both similar and different than vampires. A few differences are that the breed don't come with bodies...they have to possess a human. They also feed off of human energy rather than blood. Shido has made it his quest to destroy the breed, even though vampires and the breed are usually comrades. Together with Yayoi, his blood donor and partner, Guni, an urban fairy, and Riho, his young secretary, he sets out to save humans from them.
The best part of the series though, in my opinion, is definitely Cain and his relationship with Shido. Cain is Shido's sire, and he's deeply in love with him, though Shido doesn't return the feelings. His quest in life is to get Shido to return to him. In the second DVD all the characters get remodeled... Cain was rather ugly in the first DVD, but in the second one - wow! He's simply gorgeous.
The opening is one of the coolest openings I've ever seen in any anime so far. The song they play is Gessekai, and it's a beautiful song.
If you're bored of the usual in vampire movies and anime, check this one out. It's definitely refreshing, and the only bad part is that it was too short! It'll leave you wanting more.
Addictive.......2004-04-03
Many many people will tell you that Nightwalker is one of the more clichéd Vampire anime's out there. And it is. All the standard vampire rules apply. If you're buying the second disk, then I'd assume you've seen the first and enjoied it so I don't have to talk you into loving it. In this disk you see more of Shido's past and Riho's new life as a vampire is explored.
I'm not sure about other people's experiences, but I found some of the colouring and a couple of other aspects changed as the series progressed. My other big whinge is that there's not enough of it! I could have very happily watched quite a bit more of this one :)
Excellent Continuation of a Different Kind of Vampire Anime.......2003-04-16
The vampire is certainly a popular figure in anime, spawing films from Vampire Hunter D to series like Vampire Princess Miyu. Though the ideas and stories of NightWalker are not exactly original, the anime OAV (direct to video) series is rather cute and entertaining.
Eternal Darkness is the second DVD (containing episodes 7-12) of the NightWalker OAV series. For readers unfamiliar with the series itself, here are a few quick details:
Private eye Shiro's secret is that he's actually a vampire, but one who has taken on the task of defeating the creatures of darkness in a futile quest to redeem the fall that transformed him to a vampire--viewers may find this similar to television's Forever Knight. Created by a powerful vampire bearing the biblically-suggestive name Kain, Shiro also bears a sprinkling of Anne Rice.
Shiro's partner, paranormal cop Yayoi, offers her own blood to sustain him as the two must defeat the "night breeds" in a series of six related yet distinct episodes. His "kawai" schoolgirl secretary Riho--though not immediately in on the secret--also finds herself caught up in the struggles between good and evil.
In this second DVD, Shiro's sidekick Riho has herself become a vampire. Though Shiro himself did the deed to save her "life" when vampire progenitor Kain had mortally wounded her, Riho now must learn to deal with eternal darkness. The stories do a rather good job of characterizing the difficulties Riho faces adjusting to her new life while remaining true to the spirit of the first six episodes as Shiro & company must battle the evil night breeds.
As before, what really drew me into the series was the characters, as at times the stories themselves are somewhat cliche. When in the final episode Riho apparently has turned to evil and Shiro must confront and likely kill her, you'll sit on the edge of your seat trying to figure out how the characters will possibly recover and return to their (un)lives together.
The English voiceovers are passable, but most anime purists will prefer the Japanese with subtitles option. The special features aren't incredibly detailed but do include scripts, an art gallery, character info, and production data.
I found that the cliches presented did not detract from the overall stories and came to rather enjoy the series as a whole. There may be grittier or more involved vampire anime available, but if you're looking for something different in vampire anime, give NightWalker a try.

Beginner's Luck.......2003-05-15
Ok, I'm pretty new to the anime scene, but, for a beginner's choice, this one rocks! Shido is a half-vampire who compensates for his need for human blood by hunting nightbreeds, the local evil demon baddies. He's assisted by the supernatural specialist policewoman Yayoi, his spunky secretary Riho, and this bizarre little fairie thing(I'm not clear on her history) Guni. This series really turned me on to japanime stuff and now I'm pretty obsessed. While I've heard the plot may not be all that original, it's very easy to follow(sort of). All the episodes have individual plots and the ongoing one has to do with Shido's sire/former lover Cain, who wants Shido back with him. I really liked the action scenes, even though they got predictable after a while. Shido uses his own blood to make weapons such as whips, swords, and little darty things. It's all great if you like vampires and demons, though, the vampire theme isn't focused on very much, the nightbreeds kinda dominate. I'm confused about Shido's relationships with his aquaintences. With Yayoi, it's either professional or sexual, with Riho, he's either an older brother, a father figure, a boyfriend/crush, or employer. Anyway, I was facinated, but, like I said, this is pretty much the extent of my knowledge as far as vampire anime goes. I recommend it for beginners and anyone who wants to laugh(Guni's got a mouth on her)or see Shido whip the hell outta these nightbreeds. The animation is great and the casting was very well done. Watch this if you ever get a chance, it's incredibly, absolutely fabulous!

The series as a whole bears out a plotline of darkness verses light, with humans subverted by demonic forces to fall from grace and both Shiro and breeds wishing only for a life again in the light. The characters are what really drive the story, though; their interactions through a couple of episodes should draw in most viewers as they come to care about Shiro, Riho, Yayoi, and Shiro's impish, voice of his conscience sidekick Guni.
The English voiceovers are passable, but most anime purists will prefer the Japanese with subtitles option. The special features aren't incredibly detailed but do include scripts, an art gallery, character info, and production data.

Well, start it up again!!.......2002-10-14
I thought that this series would go farther than it did, why did it stop? Now that Rorouni Kenshin has ended NightWalker should start up again. I found the drawing well done along with the dubbing. It should continue.
What Happened?????.......2002-10-06
OK, I know that some anime should not be made into a long series, but I beleave that only two dvd's of Night Walker is not enough. Good art, Good dubbing, What happened? I want more. True there is only so much you can do with a vampire who hunts night breeds but I know there has to more. I gave NIght Walker five stars because I found it to be one of the best anime features I have seen.
Batting Cleanup.......2002-09-15
While the Tokyo police are fine at dealing with human criminals, it takes something special to deal with the incursion of nightbreeds plaguing the city. Demonic creatures, rumored to come from the crossbreeding of vampires with humans, they seize human bodies from their original owners and use them to find new victims for their hungers. To combat this problem the beautiful agent Yayoi has formed an alliance with Shido, a vampire now sworn to aid humanity. Joining them are Guni, Shido's mini-demon familiar, and Riho, his secretary and assistant.
This may sound a bit like Buffy's Angel, but the similarity is only superficial. Nightwalker is much lighter in tone than its U.S. counterpart, depending on wisecracking and innuendo rather than the dark wit and sarcasm. Nor is 'Nightwalker' much like 'Hellsing,' another anime series starring a hero vampire, which deals with some of the same issues, but lacks humor entirely. Expect entertainment with a slightly noir touch and you won't be disappointed.
This DVD contains the first six episodes or 'nights' of the series. Each is an individual story of Shido's confrontation with a different nightbreed. These creatures range from things that lurk in tunnels treating cars as if they were filled pastries, to possessed actresses with a habit of devouring the competition. Shido and his team rely on the vampire's superior strength and instincts, as well as his ability to use his blood as a magical sword.
Several overall story arcs are also in play as well. Shido's old vampire lover, Cain, tries to make Shido take a part in the mysterious 'Golden Dawn.' This in turn introduces the theme of Megumi who bears a child that might be a new kind of demon. The other theme of interest is the development of Riho, who starts out as a schoolgirl with a crush on Shido, but who is much more by the end of episode 6.
As I've already indicated, this series is a bit of a confection, but it is a successful one. The artwork is attractive and the characters have some depth to them. There is quite a bit of sexual banter as well as violence and nudity, so this is not an anime for children. On the other hand, none of this is so offensive that it needs to be treated as 'adults only' either. Most anime fans will find it very mainstream and enjoyable. I am looking forward to the second DVD.

I Want To Be Turned.......2005-12-12
Warning: This anime is for adults only!
Nightwalker- Midnight Detective is about a half-human/vampire detective named, Shido. Shido aims to stop the dark creatures called "Nightbreeds" who are evil creatures that possess, torture, feed and kill humans. Aided by an attractive police woman named Yayoi and his secretary Riho, they hunt the night breed and try to save humans from falling prey. Shido has some vamperic powers like enhanced self-healing, speed and strength and he is also able to walk in daylight without much problem. He always has a fairy-sized demon called, Goonie, on his shoulder, who keeps him company and also helps with her tiny powers. The series can get very gory, with body parts, guts and even a bit cannibalism, blood pouring out from heros and foes alike. Shido also has a strange arrangement with his female partner who lets him suck her blood when they do a job; this just adds to the overall mystery and a bit of erotic undertone to the noir atmosphere of the series. The stories are well paced with an excellent balance of dialog and action scenes; making you sit through each episode and wanting more. The main characters are fun to watch and some of them can be funny or creepy. The english voice-overs are excellent as is the overall production quality of the artwork, animation. If you like vampire anime you should really watch for this exellent series! It runs twelve episodes and most of the episodes are self-contained. Contains blood, gore and slight nudity, for adults only. I also recommend the anime series called "Hellsing".
audio track ripoff.......2004-10-22
While the series itself is decent, the audio selections of these disks are lacking. The original single releases of this series are bilingual (Japanese and English), however, for some reason, the "complete" set has removed the original Japanese entirely. For those fans that don't care how the English sounds, this probably won't phase you at all. However, for those who prefer the Japanese audio don't bother wasting your money on this.
Midnight Detective a great Anime on Two DVDS.......2004-06-26
I just checked the DVD of "Midnight Detective" not knowing what to expect. I've never seen the series or heard the Anime, but I was completely surprised and impressed by this Anime.
In fact, I can't believe none of the so called "experts" of Anime have commented on this series.
The series combines "Interview With The Vampire", "Blade" and "Vampire Hunter" all in one.
The series is about a detective named Shido who is part vampire and part human. He solves cases involving what's none as the "Night Breed". The Night breed are vampires with major exceptions. The Night Breed can occupy the bodies of their victims and use and abuse them till they die. When their victims die, the Night Breed, inhibit another unsuspecting victim, by eating biting them or sucking their blood like a vampire.
The series is filled with fantastic visuals, action, violence and nudity.
In the first episode, we meet Shido, his young beautiful assisant Riho and Shido's girlfried Yayoi Matsunaga.
Yayoi is part of the Nos, which is the Japanese equivalent of the FBI.
Shido and Yayoi work together to try to stop the breed but meet tough foes like Cain.
Cain is the head vampire, who like Lestat in Interview With The Vampire is the one that gives Shido , "Eternal Life" by being a vampire.
Cain wants Shido back to do his bidding, but Shido must fight the temptations of the darkside and stop Cain and the Night Breed.
The DVD is spectacular and it's great. It comes with 6 episodes, special trailers of other Manga movies, a special meeting of the characters and much more.
The visuals are impressive in fact, since this is an anime, the creators are able to pull off feats that couldn't be done in "Interview With Vampire". For example , Shido is like Spiderman, and walk up buildings, fly, and kill his enemies at the same time.
Shido like Goku in Dragonballz, has a magic staff which he uses to take care of his enemies. Also like "Vampire Hunter" comes with a vampire demon, who watches over his shoulder, and becomes Shido's part conscious.
If you're looking for great Anime , "Midnight Vampire" is it. Another great anime in the same breath as "Macross", "Escaflowne", "Dragnballz" and many others.
However only thirteen episodes were made and theyre put
on two dvds. DVD one by Manga Corps has 7 episodes
and the Second DVD has the rest of the episodes.
The last episode of the series is pretty good too, bringing
together everythings that happened to Shido's vampire life.
Dark guardian.......2003-08-08
This was my introduction to vampire anime. It is about a vampire with no memory of his mortal past fighting to save humanity from the darkness that he now dwells in. He is aided by a demonic fairie, a very beautiful human detective and his perky secretary, who also happens to be a vampire. And dwelling in the shadows is a former lover who wishes to drag our hero back into the darkness. If you like your anime extream, yet with a little tenderness, then this is the ticket.
Oh you remember.......2003-07-29
You remember that television show called Forever Knight shown on USA and then the Sci-fi Channel. You rememeber that cartoon called Trigun on the Cartoon Network...and oh yeah you remember Lestat from interview with the vampire. Well if you do then you know that what I am bout to say is true. NIGHTWALK IS THE SHIZZNICK! (translation: Nightwalker is like the best thing every created) It has the humanity of Forever Knight, the beautiful characterization and artistry of Trigun and the deep rooted meaning of Interview with the vampire. This is the type of movie that brings everyone's taste of vampires and put them all together in a three hour disc set!

Better than I had hoped!.......2005-08-18
I'm confused about so many reviews bad-mouthing english dubbing. Since when was American English so horrible? I admit, some translations are terribly done, but overall, I prefer English dubbing. Japanese is okay, but I don't speak it, so some voices are too high pitched and too similar to other characters for me to distinguish. If you like the voice actor for Kenshin (TV series) you'll like the english dubbing, he does the voice of Shido the vampire detective. It would have been better if they had the Japanese track as well, but they didn't put it in for some reason. If you want Japanese dubbing you will have to buy the two separate volumes. This volume contains all 12 episodes. The only dissatisfying thing about this series is that it ends too soon. Its kind of like Outlaw Star where they say "SEE YOU SOON" but never do. It makes you hopeful that there will be more, but there never is. Still, they are still awesome in their own rights. Shido is a 300 year old vampire. He started life as an aspiring HUMAN doctor of the 1700's. In his "youth" he is much like any normal vampire; living in Transylvania, killing towns full of people, devouring his family, that sort of thing. But then he comes to a realization and is tormented by his crimes. He flees to a city where he takes up detective work. He solves cases involving nightbreeds, demons who live in the darkness and have a taste for human flesh. They also have a desire to live in the world of light and will take any body they can to do so. Shido works with an urban fairy and a beautiful special agent (Ya Yoi) to solve the crimes. His "secretary" is a young college girl (Riho) who has a crush on him. She jumps to conclusions and it is hilarious to see how she reacts when she is jealous. When Cain, the vampire who turned Shido into a vampire, comes to the city, he proclaims that the Golden Dawn is coming. A time when all nightbreeds and vampires will be able to walk in the daylight. He has also come to reclaim Shido. There is some vampire homosexuality here. Shido tries to fight against the coming Golden Dawn and to resist Cain's hypnotic trots down memory lane, but in consequence Riho meets "an untimely end" (there is a surprise here). There is no real conclusion, perhaps the lesson is that some things cannot be stopped. The Golden Dawn has begun and in a way Shido has come to accept it. What's surprising is that in some cases you sympathsize with the nightbreeds. This series is interesting in that it shows how even evil has some good qualities, and that you cannot always judge someone by societies established views. The show ends on a slightly naughty scene, making it even better. All in all this was a great show! Most Japanese anime portrays vampires as the evil villanious element. It's refreshing to have them as the heroes and see things from their point of view. The music score is also great. I can't get the intro song out of my head. This collection is a steal for the number of episodes that you get. Buy IT!
good until I found out........2005-03-16
I really like this searies and with the two DVD set you get the whole series, but would have killed them to leave the Japanese audio track on it? The english voice acting is enough to make you run from the room! So if you want the only english virson of this show, buy this set but if you want the japanese then go for the two.

The best anime series ever!!.......2003-05-23
In my opinion Nightwalker eternal darkness is one of the best series ever.It is packed with something for everyone for example if your for action, romance, adventure or horror its got it all in this fantasic vampire collection. In this show you find yourself going through a series of emotions including the following: sympathy, fear, exitment and sorrow. It's only bad points are that it's not 100% original and in certain episodes it can be in just the slightest bit confusing but apart from that it's an amazing prodution.
My favourite things about the series are the well balanced story plots, the amusing scripts, the music and above all the characters.Shido the main charater is the most interesting character with his mysterius past and unknown future and of coarse the blue hair adds alot too.Yayio,Shido's assistant would be my least favourite character because she has the least exiting story.Guni, the little faery is hilarious,I found myself in fits of laughter at her sarcastic comments.Riho, the secretery high school girl is probably my favourite charater because she's so cute and has the most enigmatic story with sudden turn to"eternal darkness" hence the title. It almost had me in tears when Shido's arch enemy and his sire,Kain, turned Riho into a vampire leaving Shido with the hardest decision of his life to kill her or let her kill others. So I would highly recommend this anime vampire series to everyone!
Nightwalker-eternal darkness.......2003-05-18
The movie Nightwalker-eternal darkness is definitly one of the best movies I have ever seen. The animation is cute, the music is excellent and the script is extremely well put together. Each scene is another mystery unlocked. The most exciting bit is when you find out about Shiro's past and the dark secret he holds(very shocking).I found myself completely mesmerized by the storyline,I have now seen this movie 4 times because it was so good.I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone,I would think of it to appeal to people of all ages.A wonderful movie.

Sultry and Dark with a touch of humor.......2002-11-16
Sultry and dark with just enough humor to keep you interested, i liked this DVD a lot. Dark story of a detective which is really a vampire and his exploits...
People Meet and People Part.......2002-09-28
This DVD contains nights 7 through 12 of the 'Nightwalker' series, tales of a Shido, a Tokyo vampire, committed to fighting creatures of spiritual evil called the nightbreeds. Shido's companions in the quest are Guni, an 'urban fairy,' the newly mad vampire Riho, his assistant, and Yayoi the beautiful agent who provides her blood in return for Shido's help. This second DVD is more introspective than the first (Midnight Detective) and reveals much of the interior motivations of the main characters.
Night 7 - 'A Mother and Her Son.' Riho finds a small boy playing with a kitten in the park. His mother, who refuses to let him even touch small animals, becomes the suspect in a series of animal mutilation cases. In a moment of horror, Shido finds himself faced with a horrible choice.
Night 8 - 'A Soul Lost in the Darkness.' Broken China draws Shido into the search for a young woman's grandfather only to find he isn't missing but one of the walking dead.
Night 9 - 'Someone Else's Face.' In a grim tale of disfigurement and tormented guilt, we are told the story of the first meeting between Shido, Guni, and Yayoi.
Night 10 - 'Tears of an Angel.' The unusual luck of a young schoolgirl alerts Shido to the influence of a nightbreed. A quest for happiness leaves everyone with regrets.
Night 11 - 'A Witch in the Forest.' Shido relives a contest of wills with Cain. A woman trades her souls to stay young for her absent lover as Shido struggles to find the road to redemption.
Night 12 - 'Eternal Darkness.' Cain returns for real as Shido is forced to confront his own feelings for Riho.
As you can see, the material in this DVD is darker than the previous series. The stories turn on the more bitter and sorrowful aspects of human love. Shido is more thoughtful than he was in previous episodes, and we are treated to a good deal of insight into the motivations of Riho and Yayoi. This adds surprising depth to what originally appeared to be a fun but lightweight series. One has to admire has to admire 'Nightwalker' for both its stylishness and its efforts to transcend the traditional blood and violence of anime vampire stories (not that that is necessarily bad). Hopefully we will get another change to visit Shido's detective agency.
