Old cartoons come alive.......2007-06-01
I got this for my 2 1/2 yr old son. He loves Mickey Mouse and the story of the 3 little pigs. He watches it all the time! I love seeing him enjoy cartoons that I liked when I was young. A great addition to any old cartoon collection!
THREE LITTLE PIGS.......2007-05-15
I have not been able to view it yet as it is in the American format. I'm trying to find someone to convert it to a form I can view.
We Love This DVD.......2007-05-14
We watch this DVD over and over. I highly recommend it.
Disney's Timeless Tales, Vol. 1.......2007-02-15
Reminded me of old times. Great DVD to have for the children.
Great!.......2005-08-25
I bought this for my 3yr old twins, and from the first showing, I kept hearing giggling and laughing as they watched the cartoons. My girls already are familiar with some fairy tales, so they really loved "The Three Little Pigs" and "The Pied Piper". I highly recommend this DVD and think it is a great buy for parents with young children.

Customer Reviews:
The Twain and the Movies Have Met.......2007-05-17
Mark Twain's witty and delightful blending of historical fact forms the basis for this rousing "trading places" adventure in medieval London.
This is a film where you can turn off the picture and just listen to Erich Wolgang Korngold's wall-to-wall score, where each scene has its own theme, as do the leading characters. Korngold envisioned his film scores as operas without words, where he pitched his music to that of the actor's voices, the melody varying in tone and tempo to reflect their feelings. The climatic Coronation sequence, featuring St. Luke's Choristers, from Long Beach, CA, is spectacular. This was one of the composer's favorite scores, which he later reworked into Violin Concerto in D. Op. 35. (The Itzhak Perlman Edition, EMI records Ltd 2003).
If this weren't enough, the period settings, costumes and mise-en-scene are incredibly detailed and richly textured. The once-in-a-lifetime cast, headed by Errol Flynn, the remarkable Mauch twins, Claude Rains and a host of familiar Warners character actors, is impeccable.
Even Shawn, Prince Edward's giant Irish wolfhound, is a scene-stealer.
William Keighley's direction is first-rate, as is Sol Polito's black and white cinematography, where each set-up enhances the drama of the moment. The term Black and White is clearly a misnomer... never more apparent than in viewing this film, with its shimmering silver halide crystals, which have never been more beautifully presented on the screen. The transfer to DVD is stunning and the sound track comes through loud and clear on my system.
Hardly just a kids' film, this is one for the ages with its dark themes of poverty, child abuse, political skulduggery and talk of beheadings. Rest assured that all's well that ends well, with Errol Flynn coming to the rescue in the nick of time!
In the words of the N. Y. Times in its original review: "The novel and the screen have been bridged so gracefully that we can not resist in saying that the Twain and the movies have met."
It doesn't if it was an illusion..........2007-05-06
Errol Flynn was the ultimate swashbuckler, the most dashing hero that ever was, is, or will be. There are many imitations, but there has never been any who could truly match him, and I doubt will ever bee any who can even truly compare.
He made all the all the ladies dream and all the men wish they could be him (some admitted it, some did not, but they all did). However, that was not all he could do. There could be many better actors, but very few could make us dream as he did and does.
A lot has been said about Flynn, some good some bad, but his image remains beyond the reach of comments and criticism. He was, and is, the stuff of which myths and legends are made, on and off the screen. And he still unsurpassed.
As it was so eloquently put in the film "My Favourite Year", it doesn't matter if it was an illusion. It worked. He could not have convinced us the way he did unless somewhere inside he had that courage. He was that silly goddamned hero! Nobody is that good of an actor.
Besides, we cannot use him 'life-size'. We all need Errol Flynns as big as we can get them!
Today, we put on airs and claim to be a lot more sophisticated an audience than we were at the time when his movies were made.
But, the truth is that when see him on the screen today, he still inspires in us the same feelings, from awe to envy, and everything in between. Of course, some of us would admit it, some of us wouldn't, but we all feel it
His movies still tell us what true heroes and adventures are all about- and if they are not, they should be.
I would more than recommend "The Prince and the Pauper", and any or Errol Flynn's movies, to anyone who still dares to believe in dashing heroes and is not ashamed to admit it.
The Prince and the Pauper.......2006-11-10
Errol Flynn is at his best in this movie. It is a testament to his acting ability in that he can play so many different roles.
Adventure.......2006-08-20
This movie takes you on a grand, childhood, adventure. You are right along in this wonderful story; back in the days of horses, swords, nobles, peasants, thieves, castles, kings, and adventurous children. The 2001 version is also very good. I enjoyed them both.
The exciting adventures of a young boy in England in the 1700's. Can't say more without giving away the plot. Written by Mark Twain, who wrote Tom Sawyer; just as good.
More in common with "The Man in the Iron Mask".......2006-02-08
This is a superb movie but it has little in common with the book by the same name. It more closely resembles Alexandre Dumas "The Man in the Iron Mask" than Mark Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper". Errol Flynn and the Mauch twins are both great in this movie. Plenty of action for Flynn to show off his skills, and wonderful drama and comedy make it a family favorite. When a young poor street urchin swaps places with a prince a kingdom is almost lost. The Mauch twins do an excellent job of carrying both roles. They do an excellent job portraying a brat and a considerate boy. As good as Freddie Bartholomew in "Captains Courageous".

Adventure.......2006-08-20
This movie takes you on a grand, childhood, adventure. You are right along in this wonderful story; back in the days of horses, swords, nobles, peasants, thieves, castles, kings, and adventurous children. The 1937, version, with Errol Flynn is also very good. I enjoyed them both.
The adventures of a poor young boy in England in the 1700's, and a prince, and a musketeer, and villains, and I can't say more without giving away the plot. Written by Mark Twain, who wrote Tom Sawyer; just as good.
Other good period, adventure movies are "Tom Brown's School Days 1935", "David Copperfield 1940 & 2000", "Oliver Twist", "At Swords Point 1952", "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 1938", "The Three Musketeers 1939", and "The Scarlet Pimpernel 1935".
Good Movie, But It's Not Mark Twain.......2006-06-29
If you are looking for a good adventure movie to watch with your family, this one definitely rates five stars.
If, however, you have read the original novel and have great respect for the writing of Mark Twain, you will hate this movie. Several reviewers have rated this version as the best of all the P&P movies. If this one is the best, I don't even want to think about the others.
On the plus side, the movie is, as stated, a good adventure family-type movie. It gives a vivid portrayal of medieval England, both the pomp and the grunge. It has plenty of action, fun, pathos, and a happy ending but also deals with the brutality, intolerance and political scheming of the age. The twins who play Prince Edward and Tom Canty are very good -- much more honestly expressive and far less hammy than most of the adult actors. They are attractive and personable without, thank God, being just-too-cute-for-words kid actors.
Now for the axe. I do not and never will understand why people who adapt books for movies think that they are better writers than the original authors and can take whatever liberties they like with the plots and story lines. I do understand that it is almost impossible to film a book without leaving out many details and even characters and I can tolerate that. What I cannot tolerate, however, is the outright changing and destroying of as much of the original story as these screenwriters have done, not only weakening it but making certain situations absurd as well as inaccurate. Thus this movie is simply not Mark Twain's imaginative, sometimes biting and brutally frank, often hilarious statement for social justice.
So -- by all means buy the movie or rent it if you want an evening of family entertainment. But avoid it like the plague if you are looking for an adjunct to the reading/study of Mark Twain's wonderful novel.
the best movie version.......2006-03-14
I am happy to report that this is not only better than the other movie versions of The Prince and the Pauper, but that it is a very good movie.
The 1937 version (a.k.a. "the Errol Flynn version") is quite good, but the ending was boggled by the introduction of an unnecessary and unhelpful delaying action, which was then made worse by being repeated (!), dispelling the high tension of the climactic end. The twins who played the lead were very appealing but were made to speak in a very phony (sickeningly sweet) way. There are also technical limitations, such as the sound quality. I'd give it 4 stars.
The 1978 version with an all-star cast had much going for it. The big stars all played their roles well, but the movie was ruined by using a 20 year-old boy to play the 12 year-old Prince. And he was repellant as well. Also, the "rollicking" scenes went on a bit too long and too often. I'd give it 3 stars.
Fortunately (and for a change), the screenwriters learned from these past versions and this version is flawless. The story rolled smoothly, not too fast, not slow, without repetitions or unnecessary delays or needless complications. The twins who played the lead were appealing and played their parts well. All of the cast were good. The color, the photography, the music, the sound--all good. The ending was just right. This version also added a coda in which the Prince of Wales kept his various promises made to the several poor people who had been kind to him.
Bottom line: Don't miss it. Also, the whole family can enjoy this one.

Lively escapist fare........2005-12-18
"The Prince and the Pauper" aka "Crossed Swords" is a lavish and lively adaptation of the Mark Twain classic. Producing the picture were the Salkinds, the father and son team responsible for "The Three Musketeers" films, as well as the "Superman" blockbusters. Released in England by Twentieth Century Fox as "The Prince and the Pauper" in 1977, it reached American shores (now distributed by Warner Brothers) in 1978 as "Crossed Swords" and with eight minutes of footage deleted.
Veteran director Richard Fleischer moves the familiar story along quite briskly, while still giving audiences ample opportunities to appreciate the handsome sets and costumes. The all-star cast is mostly impressive. Mark "Oliver" Lester is too old and stiff to give a truly authentic performance in the dual role of Prince Edward and pauper Tom Canty, but he doesn't spoil the film. Oliver Reed is a hearty and touching Miles Hendon, and Ernest Borgnine, fake cockney accent or not, shines as the pauper's cruel father. Charlton Heston perhaps overdoes the part of old King Henry, but how else can you play a character like that? Rex Harrison is smooth as an ill-fated Duke, George C Scott impresses as a beggar king, Raquel Welch looks stunning in her too-few scenes as Edith, Hendon's true love, and she beautifully underplays her part (though her surprising adeptness at comedy is evident here as well). The same cannot be said for scenery chewing David Hemmings, cast as Hugh, Hendon's evil brother, who forced Edith into an unhappy marriage. Among the supporting cast are such familiar faces as Harry Andrews, as a duplicitous Court Minister, Julian Orchard as a court fop, and Sybil Danning as Tom's mother. Two young beauties (Lalla Ward and Felicity Dean) appear as, respectively, future Queen Elizabeth and Lady Jane.
With a rousing music score by Maurice Jarre, perfect for a swashbuckler like this, and beautiful scenery photographed by the great Jack Cardiff, this is light-hearted, spirited adventure at its finest. Surprisingly, the film did not fare well on either side of the Atlantic but, like most period adventures, it has worn well. Incidentally, the DVD release restores the cut footage and includes a theatrical trailer and television spot (for the U.S. release) which compliment the flawless Anamorphic Widescreen transfer. [phillindholm]
Good production.......2005-08-19
We ordered this production of The Prince and the Pauper because we had seen it before, and do like it very much. We especially like the actors and the way they handled their roles. Very colorfully done.
MELODY WITH MARK LESTER AND TRACY HYDE!.......2004-08-05
DO YOU REMEMBER MELODY! WITH MARK LESTER, TRACY HYDE, JACK WILD AND THE SONGS OF THE BEE GEES. A BEAUTIFULL STORY ABOUT LOVE, FRIENDSHIP AND ADVENTURE. I GET IT ON ebay.com _
This is not the Errol Flynn version, but worth seeing........2004-05-11
It is a 70's remake, but by the director who gave us the 70's version of the Three Musketeers, the Four Musketeers and Return of the Musketeers with Oliver Reed, Rachael Welch and Charleston Heston. This is almost a sequel with the same cast and director, but a different story. Lots of comedy (not all of it works) lots of swordplay. Not great, but well worth seeing.
Oliver Reed is the best.......2002-03-17
I think this is a great film. Oliver Reed is not just very handsome, but he is also a great actor.

Adequate "loose" adaptation with mediocre performances makes this more "pauper" than "prince".......2007-06-14
Ah.... HALLMARK HOME ENTERTAINMENT, the production company of clean boring stories for the family! Sorry, but with so many other versions of THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER done over the years, this production for all of it's star power (Alan Bates, Aidan Quinn and Jonathan Hyde) is rather generic and ultimately unsatisfying. The screenplay is pretty choppy and cuts through alot of the book in order to make the 90 minute deadline required to fit in all of the advertisers.Aidan Quinn is SO much better than this. His role as the king's protector, Miles Hendon, is pretty much nothing! The film has a VERY made-for-television look and feel.
What I did find good about this production was the use of real life twins, Robert and Jonathan Timmins to play Edward and Tom. Generally, other productions have used the same actor to play the mirror images. Ultimately what made this film most enjoyable is the excellent soundtrack by veteran composer Stanislas Syrewicz. He has a wonderful sense of period music and he has created a very enjoyable soundtrack that far exceeds the accomplishments of the film itself. Syrewicz's other notes of work are the sountracks to THE CLANDESTINE MARRIAGE, NORA, SEPARATE LIES and THE HOLCROFT COVENANT.
EXCELLENT, FUN TO WATCH MOVIE!.......2003-04-01
I first saw this video in my language class. I immediately fell in love with it! Just to let you know, I'm actually almost 14. Even though the acting doesn't really compare with a real star; it still seems to have a likeable side to it. I kept wanting to watch it until the end! I never got tired of it. It's a VERY interesting video. I would reccomend it for kids about my age, but I don't think adults would be very partial towards it. If you want a movie to promote your kid to read a classic or just have a good time; I would deffinitely reccomend this! It's terrific!
MIRROR IMAGES.......2002-03-01
Everyone is no doubt familiar with Mark Twain's classic work of two boys (one a prince, the other a pauper) exchanging identities. In this latest film remake of The Prince and The Pauper (put out by Hallmark Entertainment) we are given an interesting spin on the story. The story line stays intact but subtle emphasis is placed on the two characters' fathers.
Prince Edward (Johnathan Timmons) and Tom Canty (Robert Timmons) have fathers that are mirror images of one another as the boys. Both sires exhibit a contempt for women, greed and an insatiable desire to control. Tenderness and mercy are not in the vocabulary of either the king nor the thief.
When the young boys exchange clothes they see the reality of life from both sides of the palace walls. Edward is confronted with poverty, unjust laws and the oppression of his father's terror. Tom witnesses the oppulance of the court, endless power plays and the ceaseless back biting. Both boys find themselves having to come to terms with their heritage and doing what they feel is just and right.
You won't find superb acting. The Timmons brothers do an adequate job in portraying the two characters. Miles (Aiden Quinn) shows a deep empathy for the pauper who is Edward. Alas the poor boy is mad thinking he is a prince then a king. Miles goes along with the game but after awhile is challenged by Edward to move beyond his own disillusions.
This is another good family video. It is entertaining and enjoyable. Mark Twain would no doubt enjoy this rendition of his work.
