"Sentries have come in from the hill, sir.... They report Zulus to the southeast. Thousands of them." One of the best pure action movies ever made, this rousing adventure recounts the true story of a small 18th-century regiment of British troops (including a very blue-blooded turn by a young Michael Caine) endlessly besieged by an seemingly unceasing number of fierce attackers. Although the basic premise has since been executed with more technical skill and panache (most notably by Aliens and Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans), it's unlikely that anything will ever top the utter spectacle and, above all, sheer unbelievable size of the combat scenes that almost wholly comprise the last half of this film. A gloriously exhilarating essential for anyone looking to get lost in the heat of cinematic battle, topped off with a healthy dose of gallows humor. Not to be missed. Richard Burton voiced the stirring narration. Zulu was followed by a slightly dry but still recommended prequel, Zulu Dawn. --Andrew Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great breakdancing DVD :).......2007-05-31

I thought this DVD was very well put together. It has a lot of great breakdancing techniques and the background scenes and the camera angles showing the breakdancing techniques makes it clear as to how to perform them. There are two DVDs inside, one for basic moves and another for more advanced techniques. It will keep you coming back to it also because you can't master it all the techniques in a day, and you can learn some breakdance terminology also. Decently priced and cool DVD!

5 out of 5 stars The best!!!.......2007-05-10

The best b-boy instructional video around. Period.

Loaded with extras.

1 out of 5 stars NOT SO GOOD.......2007-05-03

This video looks amatuer in the way it was shot. It looks like it was filmed in someone's basement or backyard. Also, the language is so street I barely understood what they were saying (not everybody is a street kid english please!!). Very disappointed and definitley not worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD, i personally DO recommend this dvd.......2007-04-14

I bought the dvd last year, and I only apologize to the curious possible buyers that it took me so long to get on here and tell you how good the program is. First, the videographers are excellent because when they show the guys dancing, if they're doing a full body dance, they show them head to toe at all times, and whether its the upper body, lower body you ALWAYS know what the dancer is doing which is crucial to learning. Next, it teaches a whole lot of material, street dancing, waves with you body through muscle and joint isolation, the robot, top rocks, advanced/power moves, basic moves, it teaches you everything you need to get your bboy skills goin if you're serious about not only learning to break from a beginners stand point, but also advancing very far. If you master this dvd set you'll rock with anyone out there. Because you'll not only know so many different moves, and aspects of breaking and just street dancing period, that you'll be skilled enough to literally start developing your own style and moves, as well as to update on present day moves that you see in the coming future. You'll be strong enough, and fast enough in your body, and you're mind will just be in that breaking mode. If there are any moves your seeing from the past two years that arn't on the dvd, it's because the dvd was copyrighted in 2004, but if theres any level you need to get to this dvd will definetely advance you to it beyond measure. I'm glad I bought it, I can't say I regret anything from it. Oh i forgot, it has alot of different guys that brought different aspects to the culture of breaking, and if you like researching the dance, theres some names on here that you might appreciate knowing about. Theres a basic moves dvd in the pack, and an power moves dvd, and theres breaking events that you'll see, and just all these different dudes that'll teach you any and everything.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT.......2007-04-04

Actually it is VERY COOL CD i swear it is so clear in everything especially in the accent it is very easy for who don't know a lot in english language & i did a good breaking :P :D WOW i'm now a bboy :D

Cy Endfield co-wrote the epic prequel Zulu Dawn 15 years after his enormously popular Zulu. Set in 1879, this film depicts the catastrophic Battle of Isandhlwana, which remains the worst defeat of the British army by natives, with the British contingent outnumbered 16-to-1 by the Zulu tribesmen. The film's opinion of events is made immediately clear in its title sequence: ebullient African village life presided over by King Cetshwayo is contrasted with aristocratic artifice under the arrogant eye of General Lord Chelmsford (Peter O'Toole). Chelmsford is at the heart of all that goes wrong, initiating the catastrophic battle with an ultimatum made seemingly for the sake of giving his troops something to do. His detached manner leads to one mistake after another, and this is wryly illustrated in a moment when neither he nor his officers can be bothered to pronounce the name of the land they're in. That it's a beautiful land nonetheless is made clear by the superb cinematography, which drinks in the massive open spaces that shrink the British army to a line of red ants. Splendidly stiff-upper-lipped support comes from a heroic Burt Lancaster and a fluffy, yet gruff, Bob Hoskins. Although the story is less focused and inevitably more diffuse than the concentrated events of Rorke's Drift which followed soon after, Zulu Dawn is an unflinchingly honest depiction of British Imperial diplomacy. --Paul Tonks

Description

A prequel to the war epic "Zulu", this dramatic story recounts the breathtaking defeat of British forces at the hands of a 25,000 strong and relentlessly determined Zulu army in 1870. The all-star cast, and extravagant production quality make Zulu Dawn a spectacular film with a guaranteed place in the list of Hollywood Greats.

Slow, dull and done on the "cheap"....stick with "Zulu" and read your history book's ....far more entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Black Hawk Dawn.......2007-03-19

A rare historically correct film that shows the defeat of a modern army by primitive forces. History is written by the victor but in this case you find a British film which admits a ruinous defeat by African Warriors.
What you don't find here is the fact that the Zulus were being gunned down continuously but due to the constant firing of the British issued Martini rifles, the weapons overheated causing them to malfunction.
The film also expresses the pompous arrogant attitudes of some of the British Officers who overestimated themselves thus underestimating the enemy.
There was a scene with ammo distribution which teaches us that strict attention to accountability by some of the non-commissioned officers eventually led to their demise thus the rules and tactics of an organized army can work against itself when dealing with warrior factions.
It is a strong film and reminds me of "Black Hawk Down". Burt Lancaster's character is undercasted here. He deserved a much better role. Michael Caine should have been in this one along with Peter O'Toole & Richard Harris.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy .......2007-03-15

Its hard to know if you would understand what actually happened at Isandlewana if all you had to go on was this film - but all the elements are there - Screwed down ammo boxes - underestimation of Zulu capabilities - A trumped up rationalization of why we are going to annex Zulu land. The personalities - or lack of them - Overall a feast for the Military Historian. Not as satisfactory as a Movie (no happy ending here). The missing element here is that although this was a major embarrassment for the British Empire - The subsequent victory at Rourkes drift allowed them to save face - regroup and ultimately devastate the Zulus

5 out of 5 stars Never Let Pride Under Estimate your Opponent.......2007-02-15

If you own Zulu, then you should purchase Zulu Dawn as this put into perspective the greatness of the Zulu Nation. It is slower that Zulu, as it must lay the ground work for the greatest humiliation of the British Army and why. The slaughter is swift, the defeat masterful and pride over arching.

4 out of 5 stars Two Parts.......2007-02-12

This makes a nice companion piece to the movie Zulu. Released after Zulu, this movie is never the less a prequel. Both movies are stand alone, so it is not imperative to see one or the other before viewing either. A first rate cast and African scenery makes this a winner. Though there seems to be a bit of an anti-British undercurrent, the movie has only a few historical inaccuracies. The British did make a mistake, and sadly for the men involved, it resulted in the greatest defeat of a modern army by a tribal force. Incredible battle scenes make this a must.

Description

A towering cinematic achievement. An astonishing true story. And "a battle film in the grand tradition of Four Feathers and Gunga Din" (Time)! Filmed against the exotic locales of Africa and starring Stanley Baker (The Guns of Navarone), Jack Hawkins (Lawrence of Arabia) and Academy AwardÂ(r) winner* Michael Caine (in his first major motion picture role), Zulu is a thrilling account of one of history's fiercest battles! As a terrifying war chant echoes across the majestic African plains, 4000 Zulu tribesmen rise up from the tall grassthat hides them. Furiously beating their swords against their shields, the warriors descend upon a small garrison of English soldiers. "Usuto! Usuto! (Kill! Kill!)," they cry as they launch into a battle with the vastly outnumbered English militia who must manifest incredible skill and incomparable bravery just to survive. *1999: Supporting Actor, The Cider House Rules; 1986: Supporting Actor, Hannah and Her Sisters

5 out of 5 stars Zulu.......2007-07-02

Endfield's breathless depiction of a rag-tag English force battling an implacable enemy remains one of our very best war films. Baker (who co-produced) was never better, and got his mystified Zulu extras to cooperate only after showing them an old Gene Autry Western, which helped them understand the nature of acting. In one of his final appearances, Jack Hawkins registers as a fanatical priest, and you can almost see the word "star" emblazoned on Caine's forehead. Like the heroes it portrays, the stellar "Zulu" richly earns a chestful of medals.

5 out of 5 stars A small pocket of History.......2007-06-13

One of the great action/adventure films of all time, Zulu has the advantage of being inspired by an actual incident in British Colonial history. Credit Stanley Baker and an exceptionally fine cast for bringing this almost unbelievable, even if true, story to vibrant life.

5 out of 5 stars Early chapter in the Anglo-Zulu War.......2007-05-13

"Zulu" stars Stanley Baker and a very young Michael Caine as British officers charged with defending a missionary station at Rorke's Drift in a British held colony in Africa on January 22-23 1879. Basically this is a siege movie on par with "Rio Bravo" with African Zulu tribes and British provincial army standing in for the American Calvary and Indians. Stanley Baker's Lieutenant John Chard is the movies focal point, and he is highly intelligent and brave as he assumes command of the fort. Caine plays Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, Chard's junior by a few months. At first Bromhead is arrogant and shallow, and I thought he would be as much an impediment as the Zulus. But as the film progressed he quickly became compliant, brave and as dedicated to the defense as a British soldier is supposed to. Usually in a movie like this in the time "Zulu" was made (that is 1964), the Zulus would have been portrayed as evil, blood thirsty barbarians; not so here. Although the reason for the Anglo-Zulu War is not stated (which didn't make since to me because as a modern American I am not familiar with the history), the warrior-tribesmen are shown as brave and good tough fighters though not excessively ruthless or cruel (though I do not mean to take away from their threat; they are a worthy enemy to the crown). I really enjoyed this solid, very fast paced adventure movie. I think "Zulu" is a good companion piece to David Lean's "The Bridge Over River Kwai".

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Film.......2007-05-11

I've watched this film so many times, and the fact that it is based on a true story makes it more than inspiring. Whatever ones personal opinion regarding war and conflict, 140 men stood against 4000, and like it or not that took guts. Raw courage.

There are a few things about the real event that aren't portrayed in the film correctly. For instance, it was not a Welsh Regiment at that time, but an English one as the 24th Regiment of Foot in 1879 was the 2nd Warwickshires, not becoming the South Wales Borderers until nearly two years after the Anglo-Zulu war ended. Only approximately 11% of the men at Rorkes Drift were Welsh. The cavalry didn't abandon the men at Rorkes Drift, but had initially fanned out to intercept any Zulu's but then were sent back when it was realised they were hopelessly outnumbered and their presence gave no tactical advantage.
There was no 'Men of Harlech', there was no warrior salute but that was added in to the film at the request of the Zulu chief whilst the film was in progress.
Last, but by no means least, the character of Hook in real life was not the ne'er do well portrayed in the film but was actually quite a decent character, as was the Church minister Otto Witt who had initially stayed to assist the men and kept watch for the Zulus from a nearby hill, but then had to leave, as he was concerned for his wifes safety and went to be at her side, taking a wounded officer with him as well. Reading the mens personal accounts of the battle is quite revealing, and those accounts are freely available on the Internet now.

Even so, it is still a superb film.

This sweeping miniseries from 1986 captures the rise and fall of an African emperor. Shaka Zulu begins following a British expedition sent to bargain with the fearsome Zulu army assembling on the outer edges of the British colonies in South Africa. Led by Lt. Francis Farewell (The Day of the Jackal, A Bridge Too Far), the expedition hopes to bamboozle a superstitious primitive, but their arrogance gets taken down a notch by a cunning and ruthless warlord who has unified vast territories through a combination of political charisma and military discipline. At this point, the focus shifts to how Shaka (the riveting Henry Cele), king of the Zulus, rose from a brutal childhood to royal grandeur--a semi-mythological tale filled with family strife, political intrigue, witchcraft, and bloody warfare. Powerful performances by Cele and Dudu Mikhize (as Shaka's iron-willed mother, Nandi) give this sprawling epic the drive and emotional scope of a Shakespearean drama. Shaka Zulu also draws sneaky parallels between the Zulu and British empires, often to sharp satirical effect. Full of richly conceived characters and compelling political maneuvering, this eight-hour series brings faraway history to living, breathing life. Also featuring Christopher Lee (whose always-steady career exploded at age 79 with juicy roles in The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars: Episode II, Attack of the Clones). --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars A Masterful Miniseries.......2007-04-10

This one is great. It is well done in terms of story, action and historicity. It takes liberties but it well conveys the legend of Shaka, the king that transformed the Zulus from a minor tribe into a major power.

The backdrop of the series is a colonial government that is worried about the power and threat of the Zulus. Since the colonial office is in a parsimonious mood, funds are not available for sending troops. Instead, an officer of the royal navy is sent to make contact with Shaka in order to try and make a friendly alliance. This officer is played by Edward Fox.

Fox and his band make contact with Shaka but start off at a disadvantage since they are themselves shipwrecked. Even so, they manage to pique Shaka's curiosity and become his valued assets as well as being his prisoners. During the course of this, a series of episodes are used as flashbacks to explain how Shaka came to power.

The series is fascinating. It relies on legend and on history. Many of the actors are big names but most of them have only cameo roles. The real stars are the Zulus, particularly Henry Cele (as Shaka) who are telling their own story. There are ten fascinating hours.

I purchased Shaka Zula - The Complete Mimiseries on DVD's for my Dad who has this movie on a VHS tape from when this series originally aired. My Dad loves this movie, and needless to say the VHS tape has started to jump and wear and did not have much life left in it. He was receiving a new DVD player for Christmas so I purchased Shaka Zulu on DVD for him. Dad has raved about the quality and this set has the whole miniseries (all 8 hours) which he is thrilled with. If your looking for the original miniseries this is it. Thank You. Denise L.

When Nandi and her unborn child are saved by the ancient witch doctor, he proclaims: "A force has been generated that in time will rock the foundation of the African sub-continent."

Indeed the prophecy shaped the event and Shaka was the ruthless founder of southern Africa's Zulu Empire... In less than a decade, the paramount chieftain of the Zulu clan revolutionized the techniques of tribal warfare and fashioned an efficient and terrifying fighting force that devastated the entire region...

Set against the emergence of British power in Africa during the early 19th Century, the film provides some valuable insights into comparative cultures...

Shaka (Henry Cele) is a man of considerable height, thin, with athletic body and white teeth who can read and write... He is a great warrior, tactically, strategically and physically... He rearms his army with a long-bladed, short-shafted stabbing spear, which forced them to fight at close quarters... He goes for extermination, incorporating the remnants of the clans he smashed into the Zulu, making it increase with numbers and power..

The Mini-Series begins with a letter to the British king (George IV) regarding the Zulus' potential threat to the Cape Colony... In an attempt to intimidate Shaka into an alliance with the British empire, the Secretary of War sends a delegation to inner African to meet with the fearful warrior...

We see :

- The meeting of Nandi, an orphaned princess of the neighboring Langeni clan and Senzangakona, the chief of the then small Zulu tribe... They are instantly attracted to each other... Nandi becomes pregnant, at the same time as Kona's wife, but the marriage did not last... Their marriage violated Zulu custom, and the stigma of this extended to the child...

- The couple separated when Shaka was six, and Nandi took her son back to the Langeni, where he passed a fatherless boyhood among a people who despised his mother and made him the butt of endless cruel pranks... He grew up to be bitter and angry, hating his tormentors... The Langeni drove Nandi out, and she finally found shelter with the Dletsheni, a subclan of the powerful Mtetwa...

- Shaka ruled with an iron hand from the beginning, distributing instant death for the slightest opposition...

- While en route to Shaka's capital, the crew's doctor saves a girl who is in a coma and nearly buried alive by her tribe... Impressed by both the deed and their horses, Shaka agrees to meet with the crew... And so begins the clash of two cultures, two different worlds...

- Shaka, seriously wounded for saving an unknown warrior (King Dingiswayo), is nursed to health by a beautiful Mtwetwa girl...

- Shaka, believing in total annihilation, joins the Mtwetwa army and creates a dangerous weapon for the African warfare...

- Shaka grants Port Natal, with its ivory rights, to the British crew after he is saved by the crew's doctor from an assassination attempt...

- Shaka's mighty army saving the British delegation in a battle against thousands of Ndwandwe warriors... To test the alliance and allegiance of the British delegation, Shaka orders them into battle alone against the Ndwandwe warriors...

- With his mother's death Shaka becomes openly psychotic... Thousands are killed in the initial paroxysm of his grief... All women found pregnant are slain with their husbands...

- Shaka rules by the sheer force of his personality, building, by scores of daily executions, a fear so profound that he could afford to ignore it...

Set against the spectacular panorama of the Zulu tribal homelands, and with graphic violence and frequent nudity, "Shaka Zulu" is a tremendous epic Mini-Series, chronicling the rise and fall of one of the most famous South Africans who has already passed into legend...

5 out of 5 stars Shaka Zulu.......2007-01-12

The stunning documentary Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony tells the story of protest music in South Africa--but as it does so, it tells the story of the struggle against apartheid itself, for the music and the revolution are inseparable. Through archival footage and interviews with musicians, freedom fighters, and even members of the former government police, Amandla! creates a vivid and powerful portrait of how music was crucial not only to communicating a political message beyond words, but also to the resistance itself--how songs bonded communities, buoyed resistance in the face of bullets and tear gas, and sowed fear in the ruling elite. Part history, part musical exploration, part sheer force of life, Amandla! captures both the sorrow and the triumph of life in South Africa from the 1950s to 1990, when Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress came into power. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars A document of great significance.......2006-12-08

Amandla - A Revolution in Four Part Harmony - tells the story of four periods in the history of South Africa, from 1948 until today. From the beginning of legalized apartheid, through the oppression of the sixties, to the uprising of the late seveties and Mandela's release in the early 90's. Each period is presented through its Ngoma - the music that was an integral part of the political struggle. It is clear from watching the film the music was one of the weapons used to "engage the apartheid regime".
There are many emotional moments - moments of despair, moments of joy. People such as Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masakela and Abdullah Ibrahim speak candidly about their exile, and their love for their country. The songs, such as "What have we done ?" and the "Toy Toy" song and dance are also the heroes of this film, as well as a collection of freedom fighters who all speak with great eloquence and sincerity. (It should be noted that Jesse Jackson who is listed as one of the "stars" - is actually shown for no more than 5 seconds).
The film is an inspiration to any lover of freedom, in a period where despair may seem a reasonable conclusion. If you love freedom and you love music - get this DVD.

    3 out of 5 stars a very big questionmark?????.......2006-06-25

I really wished I had seen Amandla, but unfortunatly the RegionCode was not good. It would be interesting if you could do something about this problem. The nephew of my friend saw it via his computer (because he has a dvd-writer) and was very enthousiastic about the dvd. So let's say then 8/10

    5 out of 5 stars Eye opening!.......2006-04-11

This movie is eye opening accurate experience into South Africa during Apartied. Th music is simply wonderful and will move you.

Buying it for a class but recommend for anyone interested in history, anthropology, music, sociology, etc.

I'd give it 6 stars but it won't let me

    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2005-09-18

What a work! This is by all means one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. I think this documentary should be shown to high school and college students. Even in this age of arms and ammunitions and warfare, this documentary is evidence of South Africa's persistent non-violent struggle, a struggle that branches from the roots of its own culture, a struggle that unites the country for one common purpose - to enjoy the basic rights of one's own country.
Music can create miracles; music can create wonders. African music has proved this as South African singers and musicians from all over the world join hands to establish their own government for the first time in their own country.
I watched Nelson Mandela dance for the first time, and it was not just a dance; it was a celebration of victory coming from almost a century long game full of upheavels, trials and tribulations, sacrifices and martyrdoms, and separation and suffering, still filled with love, unity and MUSIC.

5 out of 5 stars "We Shall Overcome" It Ain't .......2004-11-11

This is an excellent history of the role of music in the anti-aparthied struggle of S/A. Familiar greats like Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masakela are covered as well as interesting lost history such as the tale of Vuyisile Mini (who was hanged in 1964 for fight-the power songs such as "Beware Voeword.").

For the most part, these are not "We Shall Overcome" or "Kum by Ya" type of anthems (though that's cool in it's place). This is hardcore, fight-the power, we ain't gonna take it type of music. Sibongile Kumalo's song about the struggle near the end of the film will bring tears to your eyes-first for the beauty of her voice and THEN when you read the translation! The sequences of the Toyi-toyi (the war dance of S/A) are inspirational and revealing, as is this DVD itself.

Moving scenes abound. A picture is shown of a beautiful S/A teenager sitting prettily on a sofa, then the camera pulls back to reveal that she has a machine gun next to her. One young lady, crying at the funeral of a comrade in the midst of the struggle cries, "I wish I were a dog! I wish I were cattle grazing in the grass!" If you can watch scenes like that with a dry eye then something is WRONG with you!

We also have some extra-rare footage of the young Nelson Mandela (in 1961, prior to his imprisonment) telling of his views on the choice of violence or nonviolence. There is also footage of his sentancing in 1964 and his eventual release. The scenes of his dancing in celebration are a sight to behold!

But enough of this. Get it and see and hear the power that music has over the human spirit! I'd give it ten stars!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Zulu War Enthusiasts!!.......2004-02-29

If you are a fan of the Zulu and Zulu Dawn movies, this is a DVD that you should own. Mind you, it is a documentary feature, but it is extremely well done. History buffs in general should love it. The production values are outstanding, the narration by John Hurt is excellent, and there are commentaries by Ian Knight, surely, for we Americans, the leading expert and writer on the Zulu Wars. The great majority of the trio of features consist of live action reproduction, brialliantly acted, and filmed on location in South Africa. I hesitated before buying this, as I had never caught it on the Learning or History channels, there were no extant reviews, and the packaging did not initially inspire confidence. However, my hunch paid off, and this outstanding little gem is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars The Zulus Represented!.......2007-06-22

In typical history classes, students learn why a war was fought and who won. The mechanics of the war are usually only studied by those in military classes. This work goes into specifics about weapons not working, battle plans, retreat plans, etc.

It's easy to think that Europeans defeated non-Europeans without exception. However, the battle in South Dakota's Black Hills, this battle, Algeria, Vietnam, and the Ethiopian battle against Italians prove that the line of domination was not always unidirectional. Whereas history suggests that Custer was foolhardy, the British Frere (whose French last name is never explained) had valid reasons to think the Zulus could not overthrow the Europeans. The documentary immediately states how the Zulu success was a Pyrrhic victory because five Zulus died for every one Brit killed and the Zulus were not able to keep their independence for long.

Many of the battle reenactments were well-done, rather than cheesy. I wonder if they took clips from Michael Caine's film "Zulu." In the reenactments, they actually had the Zulu King speaking in Zulu with English subtitles. Shaka Zulu is mentioned once but it's implied that not in the picture by this point. Just as indigenous tribes helped the Spanish conquer the Aztecs and the Incas, this documentary stated that some Zulus did support the British. The fact that the Zulus killed Napoleon IV ended a French dynasty never comes up either.

Unlike most documentaries that interview four or five scholars, this work only interviewed one. This is a British production, so it uses British spellings.

Remember, Boy George sang, "War, war is stupid!" Even Bart Simpson gave a caveat that wars are terrible. Still, this documentary made a battle look interesting. I really think Civil War recreationists and other hawks will really enjoy this work.

1 out of 5 stars This movie is an insult.......2007-06-07

This movie is horrible. Don't buy it. I am lucky to have looked at a friend's copy. It insults the memory of the great Shaka Zulu. It must have been painful for Celes to act in this silly movie
    which makes no historical sense.

    2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2007-03-22

I really enjoyed the Shaka Zulu miniseries which featured this same cast. For that reason I was expecting more of the same. I got the same cast but I did not get the same enjoyment. This one was not worth much.

The story is of the furthering encroachment by the English and the Boers into the Zulu kingdom. Shaka is not a king to be trifled with and is in many way "primitive" but that does not keep him from sophisticated thinking as well. He is portrayed as a great leader of his people who can be violent but who is also willing and indeed eager to learn new things. So much they got right.

A great part of this story tells of Shaka being betrayed and captured by slavers. He vows vengeance but tempers that vengeance because of the example of an Englishwoman who shows him kindness. This part of the story is very simplistic and is dramatically flat. So too is most of the rest of the story. The one good acting job in this sequel is that of the title role. He tries to portray the complexity of the character. The rest are one dimensional.

2 out of 5 stars Means well but ends horribly.......2007-03-22

This movie is pretty hard to watch for anyone who likes a good drama or historical movies. Every scene was over the top and tried its best to make you care. Miss Farewell and Cpt. Prentice falling in love is nausiating. Yet, this tacky scene is trumped by the pitiful image of Grace Jones dead, sitting up with eyes open!!!!, because her man, Shaka Zulu, was away too long! The only highlights of the movie are the scenes where Shaka kicks butt and saves the day. The downside to that is the action scenes are so off the wall there's no point in saying it is based on a true story. Ex1-Shaka runs across Africa, on foot!, to kill a rivile king. Ex2-Shaka breaks the slave shackels from his wrists and takes over a slave ship single handed!
It's one of those you have to see once to tell people it's nothing like the real miniseries movies.
For the record, one of the worst sequels ever made. Should not be allowed to have the name "Shaka Zulu" on the cover!

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-01

This is not the movie I was expecting. I thought it would be the film I saw on TV several years ago.

1 out of 5 stars It might have been good before Hollywood got a hold of it........2006-12-14

It must have been completly exhausting for Henry Cele to carry this movie for an hour and a half. You rarely see such true stage presence. It's too bad it was wasted in this movie. It gave a few shining monments of social criticism on the English colonial system and slave trade, but spent the rest of the time mooning over the weak romantic subplot.
