The race murders committed by a group of neo-Nazis in Dead-Bang are based on fact, but the down-on-his-luck, L.A. homicide detective (Don Johnson in a role inspired by a real-life cop) investigating them is the real show here. His personal life in such turmoil that he vomits on a witness, his finances so bad that he has to tape his broken glasses, Johnson's gumshoe is a study in dedicated grimness. There's adequate suspense and drama surrounding the killer fascists, but this 1989 film by John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate) is more noteworthy for a few examples of the director's stylish flair for hard action than social commentary. --Tom Keogh

This CD is a perfect tool to view violence from another perspective and how the zero tolerance policy can be a controversial issue.
Deals with todays hot issue of school violence.......2006-11-28
This is a very good movie. It really hits on the way schools are today. I believe everyone should see this. Watch with your children or parents and converse on what is going on. There has never been a movie like this. It gets to the point of the matter which is school bullying and what the outcome can be.
a great movie with an amazing actor.......2006-11-06
i saw this movie on showtime and i was surprised to see that this movie
was made after what happened at those schools but then i thought this is
good, a movie like this should be made because people need to know about
this kind of thing. i was one of those kids who got teased in school and
at times i felt like going and shotting the people who tormented me but i
didn't, but i think every kid who's been teased should see this movie be-
cause it can show them that you don't have to go out there and kill the
people who hurt you, you can get revenge in different ways.
i also thought randy harrison was great in this movie, i've been a fan of
his sense queer as folk and i thought he was amazing in this movie and i
think he's going to go far. i can't wait to see his next movie and any thing else he does in the future.
True high school drama!!.......2006-07-06
You know what? I saw this movie and loved it! This is a true high school drama! It is the only high school drama I would ever watch. It shows just what brutal of a place high school really is. I agree 100% with the guy who said like "bullying is true drama. Not my boyfriend ditched me or my parents caught me getting wasted and they took away my Porche". Bullying is true drama. Like I said this is the only high school drama I would ever watch. I really hate those stupid fake chick flicks that just glorify high school and have all that fake drama. I think it should be shown in all schools. I can almost gauruntee this movie would certainly change anybodys opinion on school bullying. Think before you bully somebody. You could wind up dead someday!
Great film! Great actors!.......2006-05-05
Amazing work by these two young actors, Ben Foster and Randy Harrison. The white heat of passion and intensity of these two can melt solid concrete.

Daring dark comedy.......2007-06-12
I had heard about Kiss Kiss Bang Bang prior to its release, and fully intended on seeing it in theatres. However, it was put into limited release, and I missed out on it. It is unfortunate that this is the fate of such a fine film. I'm sure it will be one of those "DVD hits" like Donnie Darko, Boondock Saints and Pitch Black. The movie features under-rated actor Robert Downey Jr. as a petty burglar who happens, by chance, to land a gig as an actor. He's sent to Los Angeles for more screen tests and training with a detective - played by another under-rated actor, Val Kilmer - for his part in the film. Downey finds himself in the middle of the Hollywood party scene where he runs into Michelle Monaghan, whom he had grown up with in a small Iowan town. Together, the three of them are thrust into a plot featuring many dead bodies appearing in places they would rather not have them, and many dark comedic moments. The beauty of this film is how well writer/director Shane Black (adapted from a novel by Brett Halliday) mixes the conspiratorial murder mystery with off-kilter humor and fanciful cinematography. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, suspense, and humor all as independent movies, but brought together into one coherent piece moved it beyond any one part.
Kiss Color Bang Dialog.......2007-02-21
This is a wonderful and much underrated film: and in Blu-Ray format the color is dazzling. Add to that the self-referential script (including set decoration that you have to scan carefully to get all the hidden jokes) and the flip dialog and canny narrative from Robert Downey,Jr. and they add up to a delightful evening of smiles, chuckles and outright guffaws! Watch closely!

As a screenwriter, Shane Black made millions of dollars from screenplays for the big-budget action movies Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, among others. With his directing debut Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Black mocks and undercuts every cliche he once helped to invent. While fleeing from the cops, small time hood Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr., Wonder Boys) stumbles into an acting audition--and does so well he gets taken to Hollywood, where--pursuing a girl he loved in high school (foxy Michelle Monaghan, North Country)--he gets caught up in twisty murder mystery. His only chance of getting out alive is a private detective named Gay Perry (Val Kilmer, Wonderland, The Doors), who sidelights as a consultant for movies. No plot turn goes untweaked by Black's clever, witty script, and Downey, Kilmer, and Monaghan clearly have a ball playing their screwball variations on action movie stereotypes. There's nothing profound about Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, but it brings back wicked mischief to a genre that all often takes itself too seriously. --Bret Fetzer

Absolutely loved this movie! Witty dialogue, wild action and a fun ride for movie-lovers!.......2007-06-18
Writer Shane Black has always crafted films that may be a little too quirky and over-the-top for the mass audience, but I love his love for film and talent for dialogue which are on display in his directorial debut.
After a botched robbery, the RDJ character stumbles into a film audition, which leads to an LA oddessey. In the course of it, bullets, dead bodies and a severed finger start to pile up, as the case turns into a cheap detective novel - not unlike the kind the characters riff about in the movie.
I found "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" to be a real treat for cinema-philes who like smart characters and a bit of the "breaking the fourth wall" feel. Admittedly, the plot is a little loose, and really only exists to facilitate the action (Noires sometimes have plot issues - see The Big Sleep & Night Moves for examples - so many twists). The movie takes itself just seriously enough to be wild but coherent. The "LA flare" and the fact that the actors seem to be having so much fun made this a fun view for me. RDJ & Val Kilmer (who steals a few scenes of his own) are great together, and Michelle Monaghan was witty, fun and nice to look at. This is the kind of fun film experience I enjoy & miss in the garbage they churn out in Hollywood now - really dug it.
We Didn't Like It!.......2007-06-05
Wow! If they had left the "F" word out of this movie, there wouldn't have been much dialog!!!! Could have been great, but our poor ears were cringing! Not even funny. What a disappointment. There are a lot better comedies out there.
A pleasant surprise........2007-05-12
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Shane Black, 2005)
I sometimes forget that under Robert Downey, Jr.'s deeply troubled exterior lies a world-class actor. Then I see one of his good movies, and the late eighties come flooding back. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, despite its awkward title (and how strange is it that this is the sixth movie to carry that title?), is definitely one of those.
Downey plays Harry Lockhart, a small-time crook who stumbles into the beginnings of an acting career while fleeing from some nasty men with guns. Lockhart is transplanted to the other side of the country and under consideration for the lead in a detective series; in order to get him some ideas about what happens on the job, he gets paired up with real private detective Perry (Val Kilmer). Meanwhile, he's run into Harmony (Unfaithful's Michelle Monaghan), the girl he had a major crush on in high school who went out to Hollywood to become an actress. Perry is planning on keeping Harry out of danger, but the two of them quickly become embroiled in an ugly, complex case.
I don't watch too many comedies; not because I don't like them, but because I prefer other genres of film. So I don't laugh terribly much when watching movies. This month, though, I've laughed more at movies than I have in the past year. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was half the reason. (He Died with a Felafel in His Hand was the other half.) Kilmer and Downey are great foils for one another, and both have very good timing here. Add in a few overly weird minor characters and the mother of all Rube Goldbergian plots, and you've got yourself a winner. No one will mistake this for deathless cinema, but then again, it never aspires to be. *** ½
Clever tribute to crime pix delivers both laughs and thrills.......2007-04-17
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is one of those humorous takes on the "film noir" genre that wants to have it both ways: it makes clever comments and funny asides about the conventions of the genre (mostly via voiceover narration) while, at the same time, wanting to tell a genuinely involving "noir" story, too. And I have to say that, for the most part, the film succeeds. While I'm not as madly in love with this movie as many of the reviewers here, I certainly didn't feel that it's the train wreck some on this site describe it to be. Discovering this on DVD, I found it to be slick, fun, and clever. Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer in particular seem to be having a lot of fun. The DVD features attractive, slickly designed menus, dynamite picture and sound, and some good extras (including a gag reel that for once is actually fun to watch). Check this one out.
Self-conscious noir.......2007-03-28
A small-time crook (Robert Downey Jr) stumbles into an audition while running from police and ends up with a free ticket to LA, where he becomes involved in a complicated scheme along with his high school sweetheart (Michelle Monaghan) and a gay PI (Val Kilmer). There is much to enjoy here, including some laugh-out-loud moments and some enthusiastic skewering of action movie cliches. In the end, however, it is a little too cute and self-conscious, though never boring. Stick around for the credits. Robert Downey Jr. co-wrote and performs the final song.

The Search for Bobby Burns.......2007-02-08
The film opens with a man looking at a pile of past due debts. Jerry Beck is a divorced policeman who has a restraining order. Then we see an armed robber shoot a store owner, then a policeman, when he escapes. Beck is sent to search for suspects in these killings. One name is on the top of the list, so Beck tracks him down, but Bobby Burns gets away.
Another scene show more bad guys robbing a cantiña and shooting the customers. The sheriff calls Jerry Beck to report this because of the wanted notice. When they go to investigate the robbers attack them with machine guns! [Too exaggerated?] These robbers are part of a white supremacy group. Beck traced them to Oklahoma (a long way from California and Arizona). More action occurs, but not much happens.
Beck's actions cause him to be treated by a psychiatrist to determine his fitness for duty. [This is the comic part.] Reinstated, Beck goes to Boulder Colorado to investigate the "Selby Ranch". This a military operation doesn't find Bobby Burns there. But the search continues, they find a secret tunnel. There is a shoot-out, a surprising finish, and the good guys win in the end.
The basic idea for this film is good, but this plot could have been better. It wasn't serious enough.
a good time waster but not "dead bang" on .......2006-01-03
i have to admit i like this movie. sure you could drive a truck through the plot holes, but for some reason this one clicked for me. don johnson gives a very good preformance as a cop to beat down to let this case of a cop killer go, and as is always the case it leads to a much bigger problem than he though. like i saidnot a great film, but i did enjoy it,so if you like don johnson sit back and enjoy
Pretty Good, Not Bad at ALL !.......2005-12-26
Don Johnson plays Jerry Beck a tough cop who doesn't play it by the book everytime. He's got an arduous task of tracking down & bringing to justice a group of white supremists who are responsible for knocking down among other things a black store owner, a hispanic restaurant owner and also kill a cop in the process. His obsessive chase takes him far & wide across the country until he hits the mountain plains of Denver ( Canadian location used cleverly instead of the mile high city ) . The climax especially with an unhelpful FBI agent leads him to an isolated church where the final action takes place. Without doubt the last 25 mins or so, is excellent action and veteran director John Frankenheimer shows an eye for DETAIL ! Don Johnson does full justice to his role with some clever humor thrown in as well. The editing and cinematography is sharp and one definite plus point is the music of Gary Chang.
Highly underrated!!.......2005-11-14
I don't agree with some of the other reviewers comments about this movie. It moves along at a fast pace with sarcasm and witty
dialogue that keeps me entertained and laughing throughout. I say give Dead-Bang a chance. It's one of the best movies Don Johnson ever did.
Dirty Lethal Don.......2005-01-18
I don't know what provoked Don Johnson to use his spare time from "Miami Vice" to take part in this fairly repellant film. He should have fired his agent. His Detective Jerry Beck character is one of the more unsavory protagonists to ever grace the silver screen. When Beck vomits on a perp you get the feeling that the only place "Dead Bang" has to go is up. The only thing that redeems Beck is that he is allegedly better than the cartoonish white-supremacists that he is tailing. The film also wastes the talents of Tim Reid as a sherriff, William Forsythe as an uptight FBI agent,Michael Jeter as a police psychiatrist who Beck intimidates, and Penelope Ann Miller whose sole purpose in the film is to share a perfunctory bedroom scene with Johnson. About the only thing that redeems this film is that director John Frankenheimer stages a fairly decent showdown scene with the supremacists in the catacombs of an Aryan church.
