5 out of 5 stars The best disaster film I've seen yet ............2007-06-28

For once, the subplots weren't overwhelming or detracting from the major theme of a film, this one focused mainly upon the prediction of the imminent "big one." The most diverting subplot dealt with a very persistent sniper determined to bag his quarry and was quite enjoyable. ;-P

And the "big one" did indeed happen, preceded by smaller quakes and followed by aftershocks. The realism was absolutely terrific, the acting superb, and the overall mood solemn and thought-provoking.

Highly recommended for disaster film fans! :-)

3 out of 5 stars Bought this for a dollar at Wal-Mart and was very happy.......2007-04-02

OK, no Oscar winner(or Emmy winner , as this was a T.V. mini-series) here but a very nice pre-CGI effects try at once again sending Los Angeles rolling around and destroying the dream factory. THe effects are not bad and the actors are very good and the 3 hours roll(sorry had to do it) by very well.

4 out of 5 stars Well-done disaster flick.......2007-03-08

Joanna Kerns, the lovable mom from Growing Pains, leads us through the "Big One" that hits Southern California. I admit that my penchant for disaster movies biases me, but The Great Los Angeles Earthquake provides a better-than-B-movie presentation of the destruction of L.A. The 'science' appeared convincing enough to bring me into the story. A cross between an educational after-school special and a prime-time disaster flick intended to grab market share, this movie adequately captures the drama surrounding the event, before, during, and after. The underlying storylines moves us through easily and credibly. The special effects certainly date this movie to some degree, but considering its own era, and the fact that the film was made for TV, the effects come off as convincing enough to repel laughter and instead draw in the audience into a horrible realism. I waited years for the movie to be placed on DVD. It's well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars The way a natural disaster flick is SUPPOSED to be!.......2007-01-22

This movie was so good, I don't think I could watch it again. This is not to knock the movie in any way, it's just my stomach isn't made for these movies. That said, the whole movie is very realistic, and the ending is not a feel good ending like Aftershock. So if you like these movies, strap yourself in.

4 out of 5 stars The Great Los Angeles Earthquake.......2007-01-03

Very prompt order receiving (unlike the ones I have waiting since 22nd December to receive directly from Amazon.com for textbooks). The movie was used by several students for reports due in a Natural Disasters class in college. We had to pick out what was "right" about the science and what was "wrong" about the science. This particular movie was mine to do so was very interested in it. It portrayed an earthquake on a real fault pretty good but what happens in earthquakes and the time it takes to get to people (or across town in a disaster) is unreal.

Product Description

Wesley Snipes is back in this captivating action-thriller about a deadly assassin who finds himself on the run when an attempt to kill a terrorist mastermind in London goes terribly wrong. Retired marksman James Dial (Snipes) has been living a secluded life on his ranch in Montana but he is haunted by his failure to exterminate one of the world's most notorious terrorists. Dial is approached by his old employers to finish the job in London, where the terrorist leader has been captured and is under heavy protection. What would be a routine mission for the sniper turns into a nightmare as Dial is forced into hiding and relentlessly pursued by the British police and their lead investigator, Windsor (Dance). But when Dial is framed for Windsor's murder, he begins to realize that he has been seriously double-crossed. His only hope is a 12-year-old girl whom Dial reluctantly befriends as he desperately searches to find the killer and the truth behind his betrayal.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Just OK... well maybe not zero-killed.......2007-06-18

The Contractor, formerly known as The Shooter, and not to be confused with Mark Wahlberg's "Shooter" is a movie starring Wesley Snipes as a CIA agent who is assigned to kill a terrorist, only to be framed for another murder. To complicate things more, Snipes will make friends with a teenager who will become his most valuable ally.

I have to say I find this film very straightforward, unimaginative, hardly believable on certain aspects, and just mildly entertaining. At times it feels like an amateur attempt to create a movie and innovate certain cinematographic aspects, but stays as an attempt. Even Lena Headey, who I always find her acting abilities exceptional, feels weak as Inspector Ballard, the one in charge of bringing Dial (Snipes) down. Eliza Bennet as the teenage girl who helps Snipes makes a very good job, even if certain aspects of her character are not believable. It's obviously not her fault, it's the writers'.

So I rate this movie as an average movie, with certain plot holes and pointless scenes. If you want some decent stuff by Wesley Snipes, take a shot, and there's the plus of having Lena Headey in it.

It's 90 minutes where you can enjoy a movie if you're not feeling too picky.

The Dark Knight and his cohorts Robin and Batgirl do battle with a scarily sympathetic archvillain in this superior animated movie that both kids and adults can watch without feeling insulted. While not quite as inspired as the previous Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (which is still the best portrayal of the title character ever to grace the screen), this well-plotted, awesomely stylish wall-to-wall actioner perfectly captures the fundamental essence of the classic comics, and makes the treatment of the same characters in the painful live-action Batman & Robin look even more ineptly misguided. Simply put, this is how the Masked Manhunter of Gotham should be depicted. --Andrew Wright

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Freeze...did he really do anything criminal?.......2007-02-13

I truly enjoyed this particular Batman episode. It was action-packed. The animation and graphics were just fantastic!

Mr. Freeze, a.k.a Victor Fries, is somewhere in the Artic, along with his wife, Nora, who is in a cyrogenic (sp?) state. Nora is suffering from some heart disease. Mr. Freeze, who truly loves his wife, has put her in a capsule to slow down the disease until a cure has been found.

However, when something happens that threatened the health of Nora, Mr. Freeze must act fast to save her life. Mr. Freeze stalks Gotham City, along with his 2 polar bears. He kidnaps a doctor, a former colleague of Mr. Freeze. With the doctor's help, they were able to pinpoint who shares the same rare blood type as Nora's...and that is Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl.

Dick Grayson (Robin) and Barbara are out on a date at a swing dance club. Mr. Freeze attacks the place and kidnaps Barbara. Dick tries to save Barbara but ultimately fails.

Batman and Robin investigate immediately. Their investigation led them to discover why Mr. Freeze is in town and why Barbara has been kidnapped. The problem is where is Barbara hidden. Time is essential.

At first, you'll look at Mr. Freeze as this vicious villian. However, after reflecting, you'll see that he shares the same frustration like the rest of us on the medical system. His wife is slowly dying. She can be saved with some medical treatment. However, the waiting list is long. The cure has yet to be discovered, despite the donations of millions of dollars. In the end, Mr. Freeze was simply a desperate man who wanted to save his wife.

My favorite part was the end, where everyone is helping each other despite what damages have been done. However, was it enough to save Nora? That's for you to watch and find out.

*SubZero* is one of the best animated shows that I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Piece That Spotlights Dick Grayson.......2007-02-11

Mr. Freeze is up to his old tricks again. For the last time, he's going to try and save the life of his comatose wife through criminal means.

Victor Fries, now turned into the tragically cold Mr. Freeze, enlists the help of a villainous master surgeon to conduct an organ transplant on his wife Nora. When there are no available organs, Freeze commands him to GET one. And the one person in Gotham who matches Nora's blood type is Barbara Gordon, secretly Batgirl.

The early minutes of the film present us with a posh shindig, to which Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson are invited. They show up looking dapper in their tuxedoes, both with one thing on their minds but in different ways. Bruce is womanizing the beautiful female guests and Dick is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the object of his affections: Barbara.

Dick and Barbara begin what one can only call a budding romance, which stays canon with comic book lore. While the two always flirted and hinted at becoming involved during their adolescence, they never really started dating until reaching their early 20's.

Sometime later while Dick and Barbara are on a date at a swing dance club, Mr. Freeze has tracked her down, bringing along two fierce polar bears as "henchmen." They tear up the place and Dick does a pretty good job trying to protect Barbara, but I know he's better than the display he put on. He's Robin for crying out loud and I expected more of a fight. "Pretty good" just isn't good enough for Batman's second as far as I'm concerned. So, to make a long story short, after a tricky car/motorcycle chase through the outskirts of Gotham Hills, Freeze gets away with his hostage.

Of course, Batman and Robin eventually sniff out their whereabouts through sheer detective work, which is nice to see from time to time. Just as Barbara is on the verge of escape, she hits a wall and the Dynamic Duo have to officially bail her out of trouble. The last sequence is absolutely beautiful. Everyone is trapped on an oil refinery in the middle of the Atlantic and, through negligence and dramatic influence on part of the writers, it's going to explode soon. Fighting fires, polar bears, Mr. Freeze and a trigger-happy doctor, Batman, Robin and Barbara Gordon manage to save themselves, the day, and a few lives in one spectacular finish with a happy ending.

The artwork is sometimes good, sometimes wonderful. I had the feeling that there was a different artist in the first half than in the second - with the second half being better by leaps and bounds. It was almost as if there's a seperate person handling the animation when Dick and Bruce are in costume. Either way, no real complaints here. The story was dead on and the voice-work presented the usual kick-butt results that we've come to expect from the Batman cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars This is the real Batman and Robin if Tim Buton would have cotinued it........2007-01-21

If Tim Burton and Michael Keaton would have continued the live action films or aleast Christopher Nolan (from Batman Begins) this would be the real Batman and Robin. In my opinion this should have replaced Batman and Robin, and came on the big screen. It has everything you want in a Batman film. It has a gothic dark gritty look like Batman, Batman Returns, and the all famous Batman Mask of the Phantasm. It also has a good story, nice action and touch ups on the animation, a very good dialog & atmospere. So if you have Batman and Robin, and don't really like it much get rid of it and replace it with a real Batman film called Batman and Mr.Freeze Sub Zero.

    4 out of 5 stars Winter...has come at last!.......2007-01-04

This movie is the second animated feature from the Batman series. As far as movie plot is concerned, Mr. Freeze's wife is on her last leg, some sort of heart failure has put her life in danger. Freeze not being one to be put on a waiting list decides that since there isn't a living donor available, he'll make his own out of a live one, Barbara Gordon. Enter both Batman and Robin(who was either still with the circus or at college in Mask of the Phantasm), step up to stop Freeze.

As far as the animated Batman movies go, I've never truly disappointed, I'm just not a big Mr. Freeze fan. My personal favorite villian is the Joker, but I don't even really consider Freeze a villian up until the Gotham Knights series. He's just an incredibly intelligent man pushed by his world into his current position. However, if you want good animation, and really good story, and Excellent voice acting, then this is your movie.

If you haven't even heard of the animated series, I'd recommend a few episodes first, or Mask of the Phantasm.

'Till Amazon asks me to do this again.

    Knight Fox

5 out of 5 stars One of the better "Batman" movies.......2006-09-28

"Subzero" is one of my favorite "Batman" movies, because of Mr. Freeze. Using traditional 2D animation, 3D CGI (Which looked cheesy) and a good story, they created a perfect conclusion to "Batman: The Animated Series". I didn't expect much since it was a direct-to-video release, but it was a theatrical-type movie that was very good. Overall, this is a must buy/rent.

4 out of 5 stars Promises to be an Entertaining Series at the Very Least.......2007-07-01

At the onset, although little has been revealed about the characters, this promises to be an engaging series. The gunplay is quite impressive as is the animation and the pulsing soundtrack's style is unique in anime. The story revolves around four mercenary sea pirates, one of whom, Rock, was recently recruited after he was kidnapped from Japan, where he was working a white-collar job. It's amusing to see Rock trying to adjust to his new, criminal lifestyle while he is surrounded by already hardened, brutal cohorts...but it's Revy that steals the show. Her savagely casual way of slaughtering her enemies is quite chilling to watch, yet she retains a human quality that seems to come out when she deals with Rock. Despite her shockingly nihilistic violence, Revy still emerges as one of anime's sexiest "heroines". (wait, is she a heroine?) Fans of Cowboy Bebop-style action and drama will enjoy this. Recommended!

TOKYO, Japan: Meet Rokuro Okajima, a young Japanese businessman...in a town full of young Japanese businessmen. He's just another working stiff who's trying to claw his way up the corporate ladder--until it's kicked out from under him.

Now dubbed "Rock" by his captors, he is dragged into a world of mercenaries, mobsters and corporate malfesance. If he's going to survive, "Rock" will have to learn how to play by their rules.

Kudos to the home-video exec who came up with the "Presents..." prefix to keep a movie franchise going, even though it has almost no relation to the entries that came before. This is number five in the series that started with American Pie, an unexpected hit of a teen sex romp that kept the box office and DVD grosses (not to mention gross-outs) coming. The last entry, American Pie Presents: Band Camp, was the first non-theatrical release, which gave the filmmakers more "anything goes" freedom in the "unrated" department than ever. The Naked Mile kicks it up another notch with more gratuitous female nudity, bodily fluid flinging, and sexual overtones than anyone thought could be topped. Pubescent boys and those with minds forever stuck in that dimension, get ready to ogle babes and roar at puerile humor like you never have before. The only American Pie connections are in the form of the Stifler family, filled with a never-ending string of sex-crazed high school and college boys, and Eugene Levy as family friend Mr. Levenstein, who pops in for a (presumably) hefty paycheck and a couple of lines of sexual wisdom about the connection between promiscuity and growing up. Our hero, Erik Stifler, is on a weekend vacation at the local college where his cousin knows all the hot babes. He's in possession of a "free pass" from his virginal girlfriend to lose his own virginity. His visit just happens to coincide with the college's traditional Naked Mile run, an excuse to fill the screen with raw young flesh and stupid drunken frat kids engaging in silly sexual deviance that some people may find funny. And let's face it, if they're going to find the nudity and sordid sex play offensive, they're not going to have this DVD in their hands. All ends as it should: Erik finds true sex--ahem, love--with his girlfriend and everyone else finds it with whoever is handy. Mostly importantly, the cycle is left open with everything ripe for another sure-to-be classic in the American Pie Presents series. --Ted Fry

3 out of 5 stars Naked Mile was a pretty good marathon.......2007-05-01

I saw Band Camp a while back, and was extremely disappointed. It was just lame lame lame. When this one came out, I thought I would give it a try just because it couldn't get much worse than Band Camp. I was pleasently surprised that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and is actually pretty good.

Once again we meet a Stiffler. This Stiffler is a somewhat awkward one, not living up to his family reputation of obnoxious and deviant behavior. He is looking to live up to his family name, and when he is given a weekend pass by his girlfriend, he and his equally awkward buddies (in reminiscence of the original Pie triology) go off for a weekend at his cousin Stiffler's college. The hilarity ensues, as they are going to take part in the Naked Mile streaking, binge drinking, and all the other accoutraments of college life.

Why not 5 stars? They played on some pretty obvious things, like the midget football, the underwear party, and the girls with weird fetishes. And didn't you know from the beginning that college Stiffler would bang his rival's girlfriend even though she was a midget? The good Stiffler realizes that he doesn't want to run wild, he just wants to be with his girlfriend at home. And at long last they get together. A little predictable, but still a pretty good time.

1 out of 5 stars American Pie: The New Lampoon.......2007-04-15

Is it just me or is American Pie becoming another National Lampoon type thing where they just create a bunch of weak, strait to DVD movies that are trying to sale based on the American Pie franchize name? About as lame as the Dukes of Hazzard sequal, Dumb & Dumberer, and the numerous Disney movies comin' out with strait to DVD release sequals to movies made like 50 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars I actually thought it was sweet.......2007-03-04

Not in that way sweet, of course. the fact that he rode a horse to her and stayed together and wont let sex come in between them. I actually want a boyfriend like that. Good movie. Eventhough it has strong sexual content in it, people ages from 14-18 would enjoy it and get the part of the story better.

3 out of 5 stars Yes... I Watched This, But If You Repeat That I'll Deny It.......2007-02-22

I secretly watched this movie because... ahem, I am familiar with the Naked Mile and despite my preference for film making as an art, I do enjoy a bad gross-out comedy once in a while.

The plot of this film revolves around familiar themes that are prevalent throughout the American Pie franchise: the desire of an adolescent protagonist to lose his virginity before graduation, squeamishly embarrassing situations, wild partying, alumni who are sexual/party legends, and outlandish scatological humor. 'American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile' continues to raise the bar on gross-out gags involving urination, vomiting, diarrhea, farting, and ejaculate. It also contains the highest amount of nudity and penis jokes seen thus far in the series. For all its crude depictions of promiscuous sexuality, alcohol and recreational drug use, and other hedonistic debauchery, it also features a plot line which concludes in a characteristically sweet manner.

Don't get me wrong. It's a really horrible movie that will never win any awards. There are times when the plot literally grinds to a stop so that they can show gratuitous sequences of partying and flesh. But for what it is: junk food movies, well, how can you criticize that? It's delicious, terribly bad for you, and irresistible.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as 1-3, but definitely better than 4.......2007-02-18

Although it doesn't live up to most of its predecessors, American Pie 5: The Naked Mile, is still a pretty good comedy. The big stars from the trilogy are overall absent as the movie focuses on Steve Stifler's little cousin Eric. Being something of the black sheep of the family for being a senior in high school and still a virgin, Eric gets a guilt-free weekend pass from his girlfriend to visit a college campus for the legendary Naked Mile...
The movie, though not a masterpiece, is quite funny and it is guaranteed to provide more than a just a few laughs. The casting is pretty good, but it's just too bad that most of the original characters are missing. An appearance by Seann William Scott would have been great!
The setting, the dialogues, the music and the humor, are overall good.
As for the film's highlight, it has to be the girls! Jessy Schram and Candace Kroslak to name a few were simply AMAZING!!!
Overall, it is a movie worth watching, and even though quite silly at times, it will surely put you in a good mood!

The other girl, Jessica, is seemingly inconsequential - just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But what the Abu Karaf could not possibly know that they picked the wrong girl. 4 out of 5 stars GOOD FILM BY SEGAL.......2007-01-20

    BELLY OF THE BEAST

I found this dvd in the pawn shop the other day for 2 dollars and decided to get it since I enjoy pointless action films. As another one of the straight to dvd movies from Segal I figured this would be like most straight to video action films, not that great. But I was pleasantly surprised with this film, it had the action of course, with fight scenes and things going BOOM. But it was the story line and some of the performances that made this movie good.
The story is as follows, Jake Hopper is a former C.I.A. agent who just happens to have a daughter that is friends with a senator's daughter. The two girls head off on vacation to Thailand with their boyfriends and get kidnapped by a terrorist group. Well as you can guess Segal [even in old age] heads into battle with the group, the local police force, and even his own old friends.
Director Ching Siu Tung did a pretty good job with this film, and along with Cinematographer Danny Novak made this film look good. Along with six producers, one of which being Avi Lerner, and writer James Townsend they all put together a really enjoyable movie. Is it a great film on the classic level, no, but it is good enough to just chill one day and watch. I recommend owning it, it is a pretty good flick.

3 out of 5 stars For love of a child.......2007-01-10

This is the best film Steven Seagal has made in a while. Seagal plays a retired CIA operative that use to work in Thailand. Ten years later he finds out his daughter was kidnapped while she was on vacation in Thailand. And as usual, his character does not play by the rules and will do what ever it takes to get his daughter back. Don't analyze the movie just sit back and enjoy the action. I also think you should pay attention to his sidekick who becomes a Buddhist monk. His character is very interesting, that is for what little we see of it. This is a good `B' action movie.

1 out of 5 stars the belly of seagal.......2006-06-27

mr. seagal really needs to rethink his movie making,as this film shows. no longer the sleak hard nosed tough guy he was,now he looks overweight, tired, and VERY,VERY SLOW!!!!!! this movie is a sad reminder of what mr. seagal was once capable of doing! really a sad movie!!!!!! skip it!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1 out of 5 stars Don't do it!.......2006-02-17

This is not the Seagal of the early nineties. Something has happened to him and it's not good. He's gained weight, does not move like before, and is hard to understand. The technical process is terrible. I will never buy another Seagal (I have 14 of the old ones) again and I think Amazon should seriously consider taking this off their site.

2 out of 5 stars Oh, Stevie, what has happened to thee?.......2006-01-04

The best way to describe this picture is to tell you a story.
My girlfriend is a huge Steven Seagall fan. But the last film she saw was Exit Wounds. She loved Under Seige 1 and 2, and On Deadly Ground. She thought he looked soooo hot.
When the DVD of Belly of the Beast started and Segall first appeared on the screen, I turned and saw the look of a zombie on her face. "What happened to him?," she muttered. She went on to notice that his eyes looked like slits because his face was so round and fat. His hair looked like he was wearing a rat. And the fight scenes....well... she noticed how the sidekick was very fast and Seagall was always filmed in slow motion. She even noticed he looked skinner in the stunt double shots...filmed from behind or below his neck. And she is no movie critic...
She laughed at some of the lines by the Thai actors that came from B movies from the 1960s. But they at least tried to act..Segall was as wooden as a cigar store Indian.
In short, by the end of the film she wondered how a person of Seagall's former status and fan base could have let himself sink so low. I didn't have the heart to tell her that at least Belly of the Beast had a little bit of plot....others he made lately like Out for a Kill and Submerged were pulled out for viewing by busting under the toliets of the stadium men's restroom after the last Superbowl.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining but not accurate........2007-05-09

Its a very entertaining movie but the character and the facts and events were not what happened in reality. Look it up on wikipedia if your interrested in the truth, or watch "Freedom Downtime" from the "2600" group.

To the person below who said "Movies are never accurate dont expect it out of this one...." Ok lets make a movie about Osama flying some planes into a building, but before he hits them he lands and hands out ice-cream... because thats what really happened isnt it? or was it? If your going to tell a story tell it right in my opinion, why do you think Students are taught HISTORY in school and not issued TABLOIDS!

    4 out of 5 stars surprised me........2007-03-28

this movie surprised me, i enjoyed it a lot more than i thought, and was actually on the edge of my seat. especially cause it's based on a true story and is quite accurate.

i watched it again a couple of weeks later and still enjoyed it and then i read "the fugitive game" (available at Amazon.com!!!) i got that book instead of the one the movie was based on, because of the comments of users and it was written by a third party so i felt it would be less biased.

ANYWAY, if you have any interest in computers and find "the art" of hacking to be interesting......check it out!
ah... the movie that is, not the "art of hacking", just something to live vicariously thru the movies!

    4 out of 5 stars A nice movie.......2006-11-16

If you like, this "histories" about hacking, here you got some of what MAYBE happen with the capture of kevin mitnick...

I recomend it for perople who really like the type... go for it...

5 out of 5 stars Great Suspense Thriller!.......2006-08-21

A really great hacker film that becomes a cat-and-mouse edge-of-your-seat thriller. In the spirit of War Games and Sneakers, this film is exciting, thrilling, and fast-paced.
I don't care how accurate it is, THIS is a great movie!

3 out of 5 stars not bad--did the 2600 protests help it in rewrite?.......2005-11-08

I saw this after watching "Freedom Downtime," and I have to say that if they'd seen the final script they needn't have bothered to protest. The film is quite sympathetic to Kevin Mitnick--he comes out as more of a sympathetic character than Tsutomu Shimomura does (and "wins" in the end despite jail). There's no trial scene, there's no garbage can lid scene (contrary to one of the reviewers, who seems to be reviewing the initial script rather than the final product)--Mitnick is not portrayed as violent in this film. Sure, they took some liberties with the facts to try to make it more entertaining, but that was probably necessary.

Watch for the real Tsutomu Shimomura in the scene where the actor portraying him is speaking at a conference--he's sitting next to Donal Logue (the Lewis DePayne, er, Alex Lowe character), who is giving Shimomura a hard time (as the real Shimomura laughs).

It is amusing that one of the best scenes in the movie (in the strip club where Lowe and Mitnick are meeting with an "Agent Steal"-like character named Icebreaker) comes out of Jonathan Littman's _The Fugitive Game_ rather than the Shimomura and Markoff book. Littman filed a copyright infringement suit over it, according to Kevin Poulsen's review of the DVD on The Register (Feb. 13, 2001).

5 out of 5 stars Great for two reasons.......2006-08-27

This film is great for two reasons. Firstly, it is a very detailed account of the purpose and development of the cathedral based around the account of a fictional cathedral construction project complete with a very dated (but wonderful) cartoon, interspersed with current (1983) on location examinations of cathedrals. The viewer will certainly gain an understanding of the social, economic and religious contexts of cathedrals in a light-hearted, amiable documentary.

Secondly, this film's dated quality appeals greatly to my sense of nostalgia for my childhood. I was only 7 when I first saw "Cathedral" and it captivated my imagination with a sense of wonder about the days of old when monks and kings and maidens were not just the stuff of legend. It was the beginning of a lifetime's interest in the subjects of religion and medieval history. Everytime I watch it, I feel like I am reliving two histories- the days of the great cathedrals and my own childhood afternoons in the long and cold winters of Michigan. Everyone needs those touchstones that remind them of the past's magic and sense of wonder, and this film does that for me. Give it a shot. I think you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Look at History for Kids and Adults.......2001-01-23

David Macaulay's video series has to be one of the best introductions to some of the major architectural achievements in the ancient world. Combining animation with live-action shots of historic sites is a stroke of brilliance as both work hand-in-hand to enhance the viewer's comprehension of the architectural, social, and historical importance of the subjects Macaulay describes. David Macaulay, himself, is a wonderful host on this guide through the ancient world. There are four videos in this series: Pyramid, Roman City, Cathedral, and Castle, and I highly recommend them all.

    5 out of 5 stars Edifying!.......2000-12-11

Next to the Doric temple the structure that most ineffably captures the concept of "purity" is the Gothic cathedral .With their soaring spires and flying buttresses these Gothic marvels incarnate the eternal human yearning for the infinite and the undefinable .This video walks you through the layout of a Gothic cathedral : nave , transept, altar, chapels , the crypt etc. Most of these cathedrals were erected in the late 12th to mid 13th century AD (Chartres c.1194-1221 AD , Rheims c.1209-1290 AD, Amiens c.1219-1269 AD , Bourges c.1195-1255 AD, Notre Dame c.1152-1240 AD & Laon 1153-1223 AD ). To me these cathedrals represent the first stirrings of creative energy in medieval Europe after being shrouded in the Dark Ages for more than 700 years . This same energy and love of learning and adventure spills over into the Crusades and culminates in the Rennaissance .Finally I must mention the animations in this video which liven up some of the human interest stories that went into the construction of these cathedrals : they are cute but a bit overdone . I would have much preferred it if the narrators had spent the extra time going over the finer details of the statuary & architecture at these masterpieces i.e. the aristocratic figures that face the west portal at Chartres .

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......1999-05-29

A wonderful and dramatic telling of the most famous French cathedrals of the Middle Ages. Not only do we learn about the marvels of this architecture in standard documentary style through David Macaulay's narration, but we are also treated to an animated story of the building of the fictional (but representative) Notra Dame de Beaulieu. Exceptional.
