You know that old dramatic principle of suspension of disbelief? You'll have to rely on it for this box-office smash, but you won't be disappointed. Harrison Ford plays a U.S. president who single-handedly employs his rigid antiterrorism policy when a band of Russian thugs hatch a mid-flight takeover of Air Force One. Gary Oldman, who chews the scenery as the lead terrorist, will shoot a hostage at the slightest provocation. Glenn Close plays the sternly pragmatic vice president who negotiates with Oldman from her Washington seat of power. If you can believe that the aircraft's pressurized cabin can sustain hundreds of rounds of machine-gun fire, you'll buy anything in this entertaining potboiler, especially thanks to Ford's stalwart heroics and some nifty special effects. Director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) keeps the action moving so fast you won't be sweating the details. Don't forget your parachute! --Jeff Shannon

Harrison Ford should have been a President... He is great in this movie and could save the world....

4 out of 5 stars Great Action flick wrapped in honor.......2007-05-31

There are some unrealistic elements to this movie, but only when you stop and think about it. It's an action movie and there will always be some stretches of reality. Harrison Ford delivers as does his supporting cast. It will pull you into the story without any real trouble, you will find yourself routing for the President and telling the evil guys "take that". In the end, you will feel good about it and you may even be inspired by it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and TIMELY! (RELEVANT).......2007-05-04

People don't often celebrate this movie for its timeliness and relevance but as world events unfold, it is steadily becoming more and more relevant in my humble opinion. This particular version doesn't necessarily add anything to the enjoyment of the movie. But to be honest it's hard to add to sheer perfection. This movie is well-plotted and very believable, even in the moments when you find yourself going "NO WAY!"

Some have written it off as saying it depicts the "cowboy mentality" as if that's a bad thing. Some say that it's a training manual for terrorists that might wish to harm our own leadership.

Personally I think it's merely a good action movie with a good moral to the story. Good will only triumph over Evil when Good learns to take its head out of its scared hind end and actually be willing to stand up for what's right.

Until we are willing to have a back bone, the list of countries that are going to run right over is is ever growing. This movie cautions us not to let that happen. It's up to us to either listen or ignore this stark warning.

4 out of 5 stars My Husband loves this movie!.......2007-04-10

This is a good movie and will keep you watching all the way through. Harrison Ford is excellent in this and the supporting cast is good as well. The plot is revelent with all the current world situations. The ending makes you want to cheer!

3 out of 5 stars Once upon a time...........2007-03-27

... USA was the only country in the world where this kind of story (although farfetched) could be happening. Especially when you remember the JFK's fighting history (maybe it's one of the reasons why he was assassinated). But now, when you see the Bush family history, the only war record of the grandfather (at the same time JFK was patrolling in the Pacific) shows his best achievement was building the family's fortune by catering for the Third Reich's financial needs. And I can imagine the present Bush pounding Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the head with a bible (to show him it's better than the coran), and telling him "Get out of my world". As well, USA lost all credibility when he got RE-elected : One mistake might be understandable, but, as the Romans said "Errare humanum est, sed perseverare diabolicum" (to err is human, but to persist is diabolical).

Another cracked animated series from the Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" programming block, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Volume One's blend of superhero action and skewed humor should provide plenty of nourishment to fans of offbeat animation. The Aqua Teen Hunger Force are a squabbling trio of fast-food items (milkshake, fries, and a ball of hamburger meat) that have joined together to fight a host of monsters, aliens, and mad scientists in their native New Jersey. Fans of traditional cartoons may find the surreal plotlines and low-fi animation unmanageable, but viewers who enjoy other Adult Swim programming like Space Ghost Coast to Coast (series creators Chris Willis and Matt Maiellaro are veterans from that show) will find the Force's adventures side-splitting. The two-disc set, which features 16 episodes from the series' first two seasons, is supplemented by commentary by Willis and Maiellaro on three episodes, including an early version of "Rabbot." Disc 2 has a pair of Easter eggs that feature deleted scenes. --Paul Gaita

What isn't to love about ATHF?!? Awesome DVD set, Awesome show!!!

5 out of 5 stars ATHF- volume 1.......2007-02-23

The second ATHF volume I have bought for my husband (the first was volume 4)- definitely not to be the last! I thought that talking animated food items that are said to fight crime (but actually do not) would be insanely stupid- I was wrong! I bought it to make my husband happy and now, I watch them just as much. This is one of the funniest 'adult' cartoons ever made- albeit sometimes disturbing. Anyone who has an open mind, a sense of humor and a love of cartoons that are crass- to say the least- will love ATHF.

4 out of 5 stars Too much of a good thing..........2007-02-18

The two discs hold the first season of the adventures of Master Shake, Frylock and Meatwad, three creatures who live in a run down house near the Jersey shore. They make up Aqua Teen Hunger Force, a force of good, a force trying to deal with alien invasions, monsters, robots, rainbows, cloning machines, talking dolls, money, mold and other weird events that seem to happen on their street. Love the opening theme song.
The DVDs have three commentaries and a few extras. My only problem is that I tried to watch every episode in one day and it seems that was a mistake. Watching it all at once seems to take some of the humor out of it. It got less funny after each episode. I would suggest keeping it down to one episode per day and maybe taking some kind of booze with it along with large amounts of some kind of salty snacks.

5 out of 5 stars Unique, but very funny.......2007-01-16

If you have an open mind for comedic entertainment then there is a chance that you can appreciate the humor of this show. The setting and characters are quite unique, and by that I mean, I've never seen another show that remotely resemebles this show. I believe there is definitely some mature content in the show, but it doesn't detract from the show, as you might think.

From heated arguments at home to thunderous runs down the quarter-mile stretch, Driving Force is an entertaining, warts-and-all portrait of the first family of drag racing. As a 30-year veteran with 14 National Hot Rod Association Funny Car championships to his credit (as of late 2006), John Force is a drag-racing legend, widely regarded as the NHRA's most colorful personality since the two Dons (Prudhomme and Garlits). But as Force confesses in this A&E reality series (which premiered July 17, 2006), nothing could have prepared him for the challenge of raising three girls while juggling his thriving career and the corporate empire he runs out of the wealthy Orange County suburb of Yorba Linda, California. For better or worse, Force is a bossy, selfish, belligerent, foul-mouthed S.O.B. who hollers like the rest of the world was stone deaf, and as these 14 fast-paced episodes unfold, there are many occasions when you just want to throttle the guy and put him out of his (and our) misery. But just as often, you see how Force truly loves his family, which consists of 55-year-old wife Laurie (still married to Force but living separately with their daughters); 23-year-old Ashley, the most focused and promising heiress to Force's drag-racing legacy; rebellious 19-year-old Brittany, a competitive but not-always-devoted racer of Super-Comp dragsters; and 17-year-old Courtney, a former cheerleader struggling (like Brittany) to balance school with her new and still-uncertain racing career.

Like their devoted mother (who understandably grew apart from John while supporting his career), the Force girls are gorgeous, headstrong, and more than a little spoiled, but they form an irresistible team even when they act like trendy "O.C." girls of limited intelligence (as when debating the definition of "original"). With father John as (pardon the pun) a Force to be reckoned with, these young, attractive women hold their own with solid family values, emerging as a close-knit clan more than ready to tackle the everyday challenges of a very demanding sport. From meetings with corporate sponsors to finding time for boyfriends (a topic which gives poor Dad no end of worry), this all-American family enjoys the luxurious perks of success (including three plush homes, limousines, and a very affluent lifestyle), but they're also managing more high-pressure responsibilities than many adults. As siblings, they ultimately prove to be admirably savvy young women who've clearly benefited from the sensible and grounded upbringing that Laurie gave them (indeed, Mrs. Force is the quiet presence that keeps Driving Force from careening out of control), especially since John Force readily admits that "this dad thing doesn't come natural." And while Driving Force serves as an excellent introduction to the dynamic sport of drag racing, it primarily functions as a funny, serious, occasionally toucing and never-boring portrait of a splintered yet close-knit family that anyone can relate to--fast, occasionally furious, anything but perfect, and full of genuine love. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Racing superstar John Force is the winningest Hot Rod driver of all time. These days, with the three Force daughters following in Dad's tracks, reconnecting with family is John Force's number one priority. DRIVING FORCE chases after 22-year-old Ashley, 19-year-old Brittany, and 16-year-old Courtney as they burn serious rubber in the male-dominated world of drag racing. But once their helmets are off and they're back at home, the Forces are a family like any other. From the turmoil of a terrifying crash to the excitement of a high school dance, and the sweetness of helping Dad get ready for a date with Mom, life is never slow when you're the fastest family on the block. 2 Disc Set

4 out of 5 stars Better than Ozzie!.......2007-06-20

Though not enough of the actual racing makes the cut, the reality of family life comes through! As a Dad with two daughters (we're not in the racing business!) I can relate to the story line. They are an American icon family. and it's great to see that they have been documented on film. Better than your average flick. I would highly recommend seeing them race in person, and recommend this DVD to those who have seen them in action. A great look into a real family, as harsh as it may seem. Go Force Racing!

5 out of 5 stars Bloody Entertaining.......2007-02-19

Well presented, enjoyable romp with the Force family. John is a madman! The girls tolerate the well meaning old bugger....and I bought this from Australia, and was delighted with Wolfmother's opening theme!

A lot of fun...and with the racing thrown in, even better!

Generally underrated by critics, this 1978 sequel to the famous Guns of Navarone finds a miscellaneous group of commandos and spies trying to hinder the Nazis by destroying a bridge between them and the partisans. The story (based on a novel by Alistair MacLean) has nothing to do with the first film, but it is a tightly woven and entertaining piece with sharp performances and delightful character alliances. Director Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger) brings his trademark eye for handsome vistas to the canvas as well, so this is hardly the shoddy and dull knockoff many reviewers have previously suggested. No classic, perhaps, but a lot of fun. --Tom Keogh

Description

Robert Shaw (The Deep, Jaws) and Harrison Ford (The Fugitive, Air Force One) star as fearless World War II commandos in this thrilling follow-up to The Guns of Navarone. Directed by Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger) and adapted to the screen by Robin Chapman (screenplay) and Academy AwardÂ(r) winner* Carl Foreman (screen story), it's a large-scale action-adventure saga with "remarkable special effects" (Los Angeles Times), a powerful cast and "one hair-breadth escape after another" (Newsweek). In the darkest days of World War II, Hitler's armies are storming through Europe, annihilating all opposition in their path. But US Colonel Barnsby (Ford) plots to strike a crippling blow to the brutal Nazi forces. To succeed, he'll need the help of the most skilled and lethal soldiers in the world: the Force 10 squad, fresh from itstriumphant mission at Navarone. *1957: Adapted Screenplay, The Bridge on the River Kwai

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-06

A great "popcorn" movie. Hadn't seen this in nearly 30 years (saw it in the threatre with Dad back in '78). Anyway, great cast, good action, visually captivating - fun movie to watch if you don't get carried away with nitpicking every detail.

3 out of 5 stars Better than I remember it!.......2007-02-09

You know, when I first saw this movie many years ago, I was so disappointed - it was such a lame exercise in low quality film making after the superb Guns of Navarone.
However, watching it now, and trying to divorce it from any connection with the original, it really is a much better film than I gave it credit for.
The most obvious difference is that this restored version really does change the whole quality of the transfer, making the scenery stand out the way it should. The widescreen presentation really makes a huge difference over the pan and scan TV version.
But the whole `boys own' adventure nature of the movie is more fun than I remember it too.. and that is the crux of it really - the movie is intended not to be any deep character study, but to capture some of the fun of Maclean's novel. Sure, there is no Gregory Peck and he is keenly missed, but Robert Shaw is great casting as the laconic hero of the novel, and who can forget him delivering that last line as the camera pans back at the end of the movie, when you think all has been accomplished?
Edward Fox is a little grating as a Niven replacement, but really the casting reaches absurdity with Carl Weathers - he might have been popular back in the 80's, but now he looks incredibly out of place in this sort of movie. Harrison Ford looking spookily young, plays his part straight and true, if uninspired, and as if that was not enough we have the always excellent Franco Nero as the ? bad guy, and Barbara Bach as a Partisan member - although it's something of a stretch to believe that they had such beautiful Partisan members getting down and dirty with the fighting while keeping that long hair immaculate, but its all part of the necessary suspension of belief required to get into the spirit of the movie.
No, it's not a classic, but its darn good boys own fun. Well worth a budget purchase for a Saturday afternoon.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Movie.......2007-01-27

It's hard to believe that great actors like Harrison Ford & Robert Shaw can't save this terrible movie ! One of the worst ever made !
If you want to see a great war film buy "The Guns of Navarone" !!!

2 out of 5 stars One of Harrison Ford's Worst Movies.......2006-09-12

One of the biggest abortions, in terms of both quality and box office receipts, that Harrison Ford has ever starred in was 1978's Force 10 from Navarone.

This movie was the first big budget production that Ford was in after the success of "Star Wars." It was also the sequel to the popular 1961 flick "The Guns of Navarone." Both movies were based on the novels of the same name by popular action adventure writer Alistair MacLean. However, while "The Guns of Navarone" for the most part followed the original novel, the producers of the sequel decided to trash the novel that it was ostensibly based on and the end result was an ungodly mess.

From beginning to end, Force 10 from Navarone is a series of highly contrived events that are strung together in the mistaken belief that dreck can turn into gold. For instance, instead of just simply sending Force 10 on its mission to Yugoslavia in 1943, the producers of this movie would have you believe that Allied commandos would have to break into an Allied air base and steal an airplane to carry out their mission. Whilst doing so, the commandos pick up a black sergeant (Carl Weathers) who was somehow at the whites-only air base. This proves a problem for Force 10 since special forces need to blend in the countryside and local folks in order to fulfill their mission and having a black guy along for the ride does not help matters any.

Upon arriving in Yugoslavia, the commandos go through a series of improbable events that severely strain the audience's suspension of disbelief. Among other things, this movie made the huge historical error of making the Chetniks supporters of the Nazis. In real life, the Chetniks were the toughest opponents that the Nazis had to fight in Yugoslavia. At the time, the Soviet Union and Communists all over the world carried on propaganda campaigns to the effect that the Chetniks were really on the side of the enemy and that the Partisans of Marshal Tito were the only truly anti-Nazi group of Yugoslavian resistance fighters. Although Allied intelligence always recognized that the Chetniks were on our side, the Communists eventually succeeded in getting Allied politicians to drop support for the Chetniks and unreservedly support the Communist Partisans. In the years since World War II, historians have come to realize that the Chetniks were smeared as being pro-Nazis. Unfortunately, Force 10 from Navarone repeats that smear.

The movie winds up with one of the most ridiculous about-faces in movie history. The commandos decided that they did not have enough explosives to blow up the targeted bridge. Then, they decide that since there's a dam up the river, why not blow it up and cause the bridge to fall over. Only problem is that the dam is much bigger than the bridge, but the producers ignored that little problem. The producers also provided the dam with little German security with the result that the commandos had a ridiculously easy time gaining entry to plant their bombs.

All this is in direct contradiction of the novel. In the book, the mission was from the get go to destroy the bridge by blowing up the dam. Force 10 received supplies dropped from Allied planes and the Allied air forces bombed German forces to distract enemy attention from what Force 10 was up to. Also, the intrepid Greek hero from "The Guns of Navarone," Andrea, was in the novel but he is not in this movie. There is no legitimate reason why the movie could not have followed the book.

Force 10 from Navarone is pure drivel. Watch it only if you enjoy ridiculing stupid movies.

4 out of 5 stars Navarone Part II.......2006-08-30

I thought I saw this movie from the very beginning. Evidently, I missed the introduction tying "Force 10" back to "The Guns of Navarone." Somewhat strange to have a sequel with none of the actors from the first movie. It should be noted that this movie is not dependent on the plot from the first film. The storyline is mostly independent from the original "Navarone" and there does not appear to be any favoring of one character over the other when it comes to screen time; therefore, no definitive hero in this story.

Force 10 already has their mission behind enemy lines in order to help the rebellion against the German advance. Robert Shaw's character is tacked on as an afterthought in order to fulfill his own objective from the Allied Command. Changes in events lead to everyone having to work together while still trying to complete the objectives of both Force 10 and Maj. Mallory with a new twist than that of the intended plan. As stated before you don't need to have really seen "The Guns of Navarone" in order to see (and enjoy) this film. A great story with many suspenseful scenes that you can enjoy with your family if you would like to.

The history of presidential flight, from its beginnings with President Roosevelt making a secret wartime flight in 1943, is covered, and particular attention is appropriately given to the historic flight that returned President Kennedy's body to Washington after his assassination. Filmed in the closing months of the Clinton administration, the film features the preparation for a presidential trip, which includes close involvement of the military and antiterrorist specialists of the U.S. Secret Service. The makers of this highly informative film were given unprecedented access to Air Force One, and the footage of the presidential 747 is spectacular. --Robert J. McNamara

2 out of 5 stars Not so good!.......2006-02-28

I tought that this movie was going to tell you the real secrets of Air Force One, but it only talks about the story of the airplane since Nixon, and then it just tells you that it is cassified everything about it, so not so many details. I didn't like it.

5 out of 5 stars This is must see for everyone .......2005-03-26

This is a great movie about the U.S president's official plane Air Force One or rightly called White House on wings. Covers the history of Air Force One as to how the need for an air travel was considered a must after the second world war as the head of states of the world usually avoided Air travel before world war 2. Shows the planes in complete details alongwith the interviews of some of the former Presidents of U.S and some of the Crew members of this amazing plane. Also covers some of the sad moments of history of mankind like the transport of Dead Body of the former president of U.S John Cannedy who was shot dead in 1963 and was carried back by Air force one and the next president took oath in the plane itself. Quite a sentimental and at the same time dutiful moment captured on film.

The movie tells about the routine of the flights and the jobs of the crew members in details and what weapons and accessories are carried alongwith the plane. All in all it's a must see for everyone who lives in this world and is in touch with the current events of the globe. Must make you feel envy about the fate of U.S presidents for possesing such an out of the world Air Plane.

5 out of 5 stars probably in the top 20 best movies ever made.......2007-01-31

best part was when the Colombian military attache (Major Ernesto) tried to tell Chuck Norris and the Delta Force that they had no authority to "conduct Operation Strangehold in Colombia and that Colombia was a soverign country" Boy, was he mistaken.
Didnt have as much action in terms of total body count like "Braddock Missing in Action" where Chuck Norris takes on an entire Regiment of NVA troops with one AK-47 or even "Invasion USA" where Chuck Norris (with a few well-placed Uzis) comes out of semi-retirement to take on Cuban and Nicarguan terrorists and infamous Soviet agent Rostov...
Did have all the essentials of a good movie. Explosions, pummelling, excessive pain doled out to bad guys, good one liners, the best acting short of "Gone with the Wind". This movie just shows what back to the basics can do in terms of brilliant filmmaking and how low Hollywood has gone since the mid-1980's.
The best part of all is you can buy this one in any Walmart or Blockbuster clearance bin for probably less than 7 bucks. In fact I am still stunned this did not win an Emmy or an Oscar award in 1989.
I have watched this masterpiece over 300 times, and it gets better every time. The most important lesson of the film is; never ship drugs to America. Considering Chuck Norris moves at 104 frames per second he sure does lay waste to thousands of Ramon Cota's henchman faster than than anyone could comprehend. Also, consider the Die Hard movies with Bruce Willis or Rocky 5 with Stallone cost millions and millions to make. The budget for this movie was probably 5 million dollars with 4 million going straight to Chuck Norris. When you have Chuck Norris's brother directing the film and he has never really directed anything you know it's going to be an oscar level performance. One great piece of brilliant theatrics and directing, even the background music is good, but some of the henchmen working for drug lord Ramon Cota should spend more time enhancing their karate skills in downtown Bogota.
If you have nothing better to do with a Saturday afternoon I highly reccomend this movie. If you don't buy this when you have the chance you might end up like narco-trafficker Ramon Cota and half the Colombian army.
plot = atrocities and payback
setting = some cesspool country in South America
charactars = Chuck Norris and the other people are unimportant
theme = never ship drugs to America
conclusion = half the narco traffickers in Central America and their private armies are either dead or in a world of pain

5 out of 5 stars Chuck Norris' tears can cure Cancer. To bad Chuck Norris has never cried........2006-08-08

I would say this is the great Chuck Norris movie, no wait, the greatest movie of all-time except for one thing. And that is that all Chuck Norris movies are created equal and better then the movies like the Godfather, Schlinder's List, Back Door Sluts 9, and Braveheart combined. Chuck Norris is a much better actor then Tom Hanks and Marlon Brando because he knows karate. Hell Chuck Norris invented Karate as well as Judo, Kung Fu, and Hamster style Jap Slapping. Do yourself a favor and buy this movie so you can call yourself a man. And if your a woman buy this movie and pray Chuck Norris comes to your house and gets you pregnant.

3 out of 5 stars The War on Drugs fought Chuck Norris style.......2005-12-24

When Delta Force members Scott McCoy (Chuck Norris) and Bobby Chavez (Paul Perri) help the DEA capture the ruthless drug kingpin Ramon Cota (Billy Drago), they expect justice. Cota just shrugs off the wrap and kills Chavez's family. When Chavez attempts a little revenge himself, Cota kills him as well. That's when General Taylor (John P. Ryan) convinces the President to send the Delta Force in to take Cota down. Delta Force 2 is really an in name only sequel to the first, and only modestly successful, Delta Force movie. It's about ten minute too long, but that won't stop Norris's die hard fans from enjoying it. John P. Ryan is a hoot as well.

4 out of 5 stars Two Words: BILLY DRAGO.......2004-02-10

This one was made in Cannon's last days. In fact, only Golan was left at this point. It's still Cannon all the way. As another reviewer stated, Delta Force 2-Operation Scrotumhold could have just as easily been Missing In Action 4, coz it follows the same formula. It's a solid, fun Norris actioner as you'd come to expect from a Cannon/Norris collaboration. What really made it especially fun for me was the appearance of Billy Drago as the villian. Though he was playing the stereotypical evil drug lord, he puts his own stamp on the role. Any fan of Billy Drago knows what I mean; He's the perfect villian. He's creepy, sinister and as sleazy looking as they get. If I made action films, I'd have to cast Billy Drago in at least one of them. The film's funniest moment has Chuck throwing Billy out of an airplane as a joke. This has to be seen to be believed, it's hysterical. The plot? Evil Colombian drug lord holds DEA agents hostage and basically terrorizes everyone. Naturally, the courts can't hold him, so Norris decides to rescue the agents and bring the drug operation to the ground. With the help of the Delta Force of course! This time, John P. Ryan takes the place of Lee Marvin as the trigger happy General, and he's quite amusing. Highly recommended if you like this sorta junk.

3 out of 5 stars The inevitable sequel.......2004-02-10

With the success of The Delta Force, it was inevitable that there wouldn't be a sequel. Though it did take four years, a sequel did finally arrive. Basically Delta Force 2 is your average Norris actionier. If you liked his other action films of the 80's, then you will definitely like this one too. Basically the only connection this has to the original Delta Force is that Norris plays the character Scott McCoy, otherwise there is none. I don't even recall the term Delta Force even being used in the film other than the title itself. Though Norris was the star fo the first film, it was about the Delta Force "team" going in and talking on terrorists. This film is basically about a one man army going down to Columbia to take down a druglord. If you changed Norris's name to Braddock, you could title this film Missing In Action 4; that's how little of a connection it has to the first Delta Force. Though there is little connection, fans will enjoy. Billy Drago actually gives a decent performance as the head baddie in this little B-movie effort. Also we get another cheese performance by John P. Ryan, a veteran of Cannon films including Death Wish 4 and Runaway Train. In conclusion, Delta Force 2 is your average Norris actionier. Not as good as Missing In Action or The Delta Force, but better than Firewalker and Hellbound.

TRIVIA: The original VHS release by Media Home Video had the title DELTA FORCE 2: OPERATION STRANGLEHOLD printed on teh box art but the film itself only portrayed the title DELTA FORCE 2. The newer DVD release by MGM has the title DELTA FORCE 2 on the box but the film itself portrays the title DELTA FORCE 2: THE COLUMBIAN CONNECTION, which is also the title used when shown on various cable channels.

Brillant Movie. I loved watching Bill Wallace Fight Chuck Norris I saw this movie many years ago and still love the film. This is not like other Hollywood Martial Arts Movies full of crappy stunts. The Action is brillant.

3 out of 5 stars "Whoever did this is as good as dead...".......2005-03-15

`He hears the silence. He sees the darkness. He's the only one who can stop the killing.' That's the tagline for the drama action thriller A Force of One (1979), starring Chuck Norris. I have no idea what it means to `hear the silence', or `see the darkness', but I suppose it has something to do with being a karate man (martial artists in the late 70's apparently had yet to earn the distinction of being known as `martial artists', often referred to as `karate men', as illustrated within this film) ...or maybe some promotional person just thought it sounded cool. While this wasn't Chuck Norris' first starring feature (most accept 1979's Good Guys Wear Black to have that distinction), it was the first, decent film he starred in, and, along with his ever growing fan base, helped turn this 6-time World Karate champion an internationally known film star. Based on a story by Ernest Tidyman (Shaft, The French Connection), A Force of one was directed by Paul Aaron, whose previous credits at the time included A Different Story (1978) and the made for television version of The Miracle Worker (1979), starring Patty Duke. The film stars Chuck Norris (Lone Wolf McQuade, Missing in Action 2: The Beginning) and the always-lovely Jennifer O'Neill (Summer of '42, Scanners) with one of the most unattractive, butch haircuts I've ever seen on a female. Also appearing is Clu Gulager (The Last Picture Show), Ron O'Neal (Superfly, Red Dawn), and martial artist Bill `Superfoot' Wallace in his silver screen debut.

The film takes place in a relatively small California community, which is being overrun by the drug trade. As the film begins, we witness the death of two undercover detectives at the lethal hands of a mysterious, masked karate man. The detectives were investigating a lead, and met their fate while searching a local business (without a search warrant, I might add...which happens a number of times throughout the film, leading me to believe California has some of the most lax search and seizure laws in the nation). Anyway, the police are baffled by the deaths of two of their own, and soon come to the conclusion it must have been a karate man. This prompts them to seek out local karate expert and trainer Matt Logan (Norris) not only for possible leads, but also for training. Logan's hesitant to get involved, as he's busy training to defend his karate man title, but his conscience compels him, and he ends up helping out (which is good because everyone knows if you want to beat a karate man, you need a karate man). This ends up leading to one of the more cliché plot devices in films, where the bad guys harm one of Logan's kin, so now it's personal, forcing Logan to issue the declaration I used for the title of my review.

This wasn't a bad little independent action flick, certainly formulaic, aided marginally by some decent performances by O'Neill (the scene where she reacts to the deaths of a couple of colleagues was pretty strong) and even Norris himself (whom, incidentally got his training as an actor from Jonathan Harris, better known as Dr. Smith, from TV's Lost in Space). Director Paul Aaron seemed like an odd choice, given his non-action film work, but he did reasonably well on all counts. The supporting cast did well, but their characters weren't given a whole lot to work with, and it shows. This is especially true of Gulager's character of Chief Dunne, who seemed to know very little about what his detectives were investigating, and so when they turned up dead, there were virtually no leads to follow...great job keeping track of your people...I guess keeping you informed, reporting in, calling for back up and such, wasn't a priority (neither was the appropriation of search warrants, but I already mentioned that). I really liked the scenes where Norris' character is training the detectives in karate, as they provided a nice bit of levity in an otherwise a serious film. I also enjoyed the interaction between Norris' character and that of his adopted son as it felt natural, despite the character of the son turning into an obvious plot device later in the film (he was also in danger of becoming a comic relief character, but thankfully it never crossed that threshold). The real treat here is the fight scenes, choreographed by Norris himself and his younger brother Aaron. There's a feel of realism that's sometimes lacking in other action films. Director Aaron made a wise choice avoiding a lot of quick cuts and close-ups during these scenes, rather letting the scenes play out in lengthy wide shots. And is it me, or does the head bad guy Melrose, played by actor Clint Ritchie, look a heck of a lot like Gil Gerard, from TV's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century? And Melrose...if you're going to commit a crime, don't wear a t-shirt emblazoned with the logo of the store you work at while doing it (yeah, I know, he was wearing a blazer over it, but it was still visible)...

The film on this DVD is presented in full screen, and the picture is sharp and clear. I would have preferred the inclusion of a wide screen version, but what are you gonna do? The audio came through clearly, and gives the option of 5.1 Dolby Digital, along with 2.0 Mono in English, Spanish, or French. Special features include two featurettes titled `The Making of A Force of One' (16 min), and `How American Cinema Changed Hollywood Forever' (28 min) which details the rise and fall of American Cinema Group (the independent production company that originally released this film), and how their unique, innovative ideas and methods for making and marketing films eventually got co-opted by the larger studios, along with the company itself. Also included are cast and crew bios, along with a trailer and television commercial for the film.

3 out of 5 stars One of Chuck's Best!.......2005-01-08

This is one of Chuck's best! He plays a champion karate instructor who's been asked to help teach self-defense classes to a class of police officers on the trail of a cop-killer they believe is a skilled martial artist. There's fun dialogue (listen to that offscreen cop muse about baseball mit prices while he and his partner search for clues at a sporting goods store!), good fight scenes (Wallace's kicks and Norris's spinning back fist look very sharp during the tournament matches), involving scenes of suspense (run, Charlie, run!), and Chuck dialogue at its best ("Whoever did this, is as good as dead.") It's got a low budget feel (because it WAS a low budget pic) with some extended long shots (not a lot of different camera angles and fancy framing), but that adds a little realistic touch and some extra charm to the film as well. Highly recommended for fans of Chuck! (Other top-notch Chuck Norris films would be CODE OF SILENCE and WAY OF THE DRAGON-also known as RETURN OF THE DRAGON. And I also recommend SLAUGHTER IN SAN FRANSISCO which is a REALLY low budget Hong Kong movie starring Don Wong-also known as Wong Dao-where mouths don't match the words and Chuck plays a really good bad guy!)

3 out of 5 stars A True Guilty Pleasure: Poorly Made Movie is Still Fun.......2004-11-12

I like this film, mostly because it help fill the void in the late 70's of martial arts flicks. The fight scenes are not very good even though you have two great martial artists in Chuck Norris and Bill Wallace; the acting subpar, even though there were talented actors like Jennifer O'Neal and Ron O'Neal; and the scrip is down right silly (I mean, the father of a slain son still fights for teh championship the next night? This is just one problem, there are a lot more).

Then with such negative reviews, why three stars - completely, because I still like watchng this movie. I know it is not very good, but I still ike it. Bill Wallace is actually very good in his role as teh "bad guy." (I must admit my bias here, I grew up a big Bill Wallace fan). The plot is simple, drugs filling up the streets, cops are being killed and they turn to a karate champion for help. No surprises, no frills, but, in parts, still enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars It's the Force! .......2004-11-10

A force Of One is one of Chuck Norris's best. It had action and some big name actors like Clu Gullager (from The Hidden and Return Of The Living Dead)Chuck Norris plays a karate instructor (and a boxer on the side) who helps the police train because there is a "killer ninja" on the loose. Norris doesn't do a good job showing enough emotion though,(*possible spoiler*) as in the scene about the death of his son. As I said, there are some good action scenes, especially the boxing scenes. Go see it, because it is one of the best action films of the 1970's!

The Pentagon video is useless because anyone with a photo ID and some free time can get a tour of the Pentagon.

3 out of 5 stars Already Dated.......2003-05-26

These DVD's are already dated! "Inside Air Force One" and "Inside the White House" are both back in the Clinton era, and there is much too much fawning about Bill and Hillary. "Inside the Pentagon" is more recent, however it is well before the Second Gulf War, and the revolutions that that war has seen in the area of freeing a country without destroying its civilian population or destroying its intrastructure. While these DVD's are appropriate for children, they are too dated for most adults.

Amazon.com essential video

4 out of 5 stars Air Force One.......2007-06-08

5 out of 5 stars Air Force One On UMD.......2005-07-12

This technology is progressively improving. I bought this title before the long flight back to Japan from the U.S. and it lost none of its potency from the awesome original.

Highly recommeded. Hostage is a great UMD title also.
