Product Description

Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) prowls the steel-and-microchip jungle of 21st Century Los Angeles. He's a "blade runner" stalking genetically made criminal replicants. His assignment: kill them. Their crime: wanting to be human.

The story of Blade Runner is familiar to countless fans. But few have seen it like this. Because this is director Ridley Scott's own vision of his sci-fi classic. This new version omits Deckard's voice narration, develops in slightly greater detail the romance between Deckard and Rachael (Sean Young) and removes the "uplifting" finale. The result is a heightened emotional impact: a great film made greater. Most intriguing of all is a newly included unicorn vision that suggests that Deckard may be a humanoid. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Is Deckard a replicant? As with all things in the future, you must discover the answer yourself.

Running Time: 116 min.

If you're a Blade Runner fan, this is the one to own.

2 out of 5 stars Something has been lost since I first saw this movie.......2007-06-01

I heard the "suits" at Warner made Scott add the voice over because they thought the movie's plot was too vague without it, looks like they were right. But this movie has other weaknesses. First the FX which set the mood has lost much of its power to impress, granted that can't be helped, but its still a fact. The not so subtle Japan bashing, from a time when Japan was seen as our #1 threat, seems as corny today as a Red Scare movie from the `50s. Last the endless philosophizing by beings, that don't exist, and probably never will, on the subject of "are skin jobs human". Maybe expecting a movie to have the same impact 25 years later is unrealistic, or maybe it was based on once trendy now passé ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A deep look at humanity.. basic existencialism..and dystopia.......2007-05-10

43 yo No qualifications whatsoever as movie critic

This is one of my favorite films. I write recalling the first time I viewed it, somewhere in the mid 80's while in the university. The images and hidden messages is something that will captivate you and encourage always to look for some detail that may have been overlooked (trust me this is a movie to be seen)....fantastic images.. and yes.. Vangelis does the soundtrack...atmospheric setting

To me geniality of the movie lies in the fact of telling a tragic tell of a group of "humanoids"- improved biological replicas designed to have amazing physical powers- they were created to do chores and jobs such as soldiers, inter-stellar explorers and "pleasure models". Replicas have one limitation by design, they cannot live more than 4 years.

The replicas are manufactured by a supercorporation, whose CEO is a genious who still lives in earth (a place mostly inhabited by the degenerate, outcasts and unfit to pass the migration criteria for interplanetary travel).. a group of rebelious replicas want a to meet with their Creator and asks for more life, a request that this mortal god cannot concede... Harrison Ford is a retired "skin remover" - that is , a policeman in charge of removing replicas- that is forced back to his former job to help take the group of replicas or "become little people". He is a antiheroe we can quickly relate to.. the world is now a babelistic mixture of tongues, so we hear chinese, spanish and english words as a background of street pappiamento. No I am not going to spoil it for you.

At least the replicas have the chance to find their creator- they are moved by our same existencialistic motives, but they are not given the paths of faith to find the answers. What do they want? I guess the same as everyone else, they just want a fair share of life- We have created new slaves whose notion of equality is just to live longer or at least as much as we do.

I wonder what would I do if I found my maker and could openly ask for more life, and find out he has limitations on that? A god with limitations, if we could forget the damn Aristotelic and Scholastic tradition of the contradiction of such a term, and we indeed find a god- made into our same image- and listen to his benevolent amorous advice and consolation- but realice that- "Yes Virginia (I am so sorry to say)- there is no santa claus"-

I forgot where I read it, was it Nietche, was it Schopenhauer?, oh well, it goes like this " truth can only belong to those who can bear it"

In spanish sound better "La verdad es de quien la pueda soportar"

So many angles to start an interesting discussion with a group of good friends over a good argentinian Malbec wine.

5 out of 5 stars Dark and brooding, (e.g.) a great film.......2007-04-26

Ridley Scott's film Blade Runner, based on the novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Phillip K. [...], is an allegory that teaches us something about the nature of our mortality. It asks the questions we all ask: "Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got?" I know it asks these exact questions because the character of ex-cop Deckard tells us so exactly in the voiceover-laden theatrical version of the film.

In spite of the persistent flaw of the VO's, this film goes on my list of top 15 favorites nonetheless. It is a beautiful film, moody, poetic and yet suspenseful. It is an intensely human drama set in a dark and rainy future where genetically engineered humans are relinquished to roles of servitude. Disenfranchised, they are built and programmed to be prostitutes, laborers, soldiers or other grunts. All the jobs "real" humans either can't or won't do are the rice bowls for this new generation of slaves called "replicants". Programmed into them is a biological clock that shortens their life span, making them easier to manage and very expendable. The knowledge of their shortened life span sends a small group of replicants on a quest...oh, hell, I'm telling you the storyline -- see the movie for that... One of the many memorable things about this film is the relationship between Deckard and Rachael, a replicant so well made and supplied with memories so complete she has no idea she's one of them.

Deckard's job is to terminate errant, runaway replicants, and when he forms a relationship with Rachael, his ambivalence, already to the point of impairing his professional judgment, is made worse. This sets the stage for the powerful transformation of Deckard later in the film, making his repentance about killing who he now perceives as real people, replicants or not, all the more moving. The end of the film has one of the most beautiful, hanky-dabbing cinematic sequences I've ever seen when Rutger Hauer as the replicant Roy Batty recites in his moment of death: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe - troop ships on fire off the..." Crud. I used to have that especially poetic passage memorized, but I'm afraid I'll just butcher it now.

Strong characterizations, fascinating themes, great special effects and brilliant art direction make this one of the best SF dramas ever made. Replicants Pris and Rachael are wonderfully portrayed by Darryl Hannah and Sean Young, and Harrison Ford is spot on as the morally tortured blade runner, Deckard. The movie is filled with characters and concepts you just won't forget. If you can, see the director's cut without the VO's. It's a much better version of the film and makes one wonder why the VO's were used in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars I want a Double Deckard.......2007-04-19

I want the original and the directors cut and won't settle for less. I saw the original in the theater more than once. No other movie besides "Star Wars" impressed me so much. This movie is in the top 5 of all time great SciFi movies. No other movie will do a better job of immersing you in a future world than Ridley Scott did here. Imagine how impressive it was in the theater over twenty-five years ago if it can do that even today. It is an astounding vision of the future. When it comes to robot movies I will take this over "I, Robot" any day. This movie showed how good of actors that Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer could be. Both have done alot since, but not necessarily better. This was probably Hauer's best film, but I do like "Ladyhawke" quite a bit. Ford, well he has several good ones, "The Fugitive" is hard to top and I enjoy him in "Star Wars", but this is still my favorite of all he has done. Any fan of SciFi must have this in their collection. This almost seems like a cop drama crossed with a SciFi movie. The sets, lighting, and camera work are amazing and will make you feel you are living in the future. This one is a keeper that you will want on DVD. I wish Ridley Scott would put Isaac Asimov's Foundation series into movies. If it was half as good as what he did with Blade Runner I'm sure it would be breath taking.

2 out of 5 stars Would be 5 stars, but............2007-06-12

First off, let me say that this movie is one of my all-time favorites. I was only 11 when I first saw it in theaters and I didn't quite "get it" at the time.

In my late teens, I revisited the movie again when it ran on cable and I was able to copy it onto video tape. With my slightly better educated teenage mind, I finally "got it". I had come to the conclusion that Blade Runner was a cinematic masterpiece.

The film was perfectly cast (many of the actors were relatively unkown at the time), the special effects were amazing (even rivaling some of today's effects standards), the costumes, sets, and lighting were extraordinary, the music (by Vangelis) was gorgeous and the cinematography was breathtaking.

So, why only 2 stars?

First off, the DVD transfer is horrible. It's not much better than the VHS copy I have. I know that the film was digitally remastered and re-released in late 2006, but I simply refused to buy it again because of my second point:

This is the director's cut. Call me crazy, but I much prefer the original theatrical version. I LIKED Ford's voice-over narraration. It reminded me of the classic detective serials. Crossing that over to the sci-fi genre was a brilliant move in my opinion.

The director's cut actually took scenes OUT (with the exception of Deckard's dream which gave a totally new interpretation of whether or not he was a replicant). Usually, a director's cut is LONGER and includes MORE scenes. Why go to all of the trouble to re-release a film if you're going to make it shorter and take scenes out? This was especially hard for me to take when Deckard's dream sequence replaced the scene where he is half-drunk and plinking away on the piano and we hear an alternate version of the beautiful "love theme". To me, that was an amazing scene and for some reason, Ridley Scott felt that he had to change or eliminate it.

Thirdly, the DVD contains no extras to speak of.

Rumors have been floating around for years that a definitive "final cut" of Blade Runner was to be released on DVD with a lot of extras and bonus features, including the original theatrical version, the director's cut and the final cut of the film. Due to legal problems and disputes, this never materialized.

Luckily, I found this movie for $2.50 in the bargain bin at a local store. Otherwise, I would not have paid any real money to own this movie, which is a real shame.

This film is a classic and deserves MUCH better treatment. Hopefully, 2007 (Blade Runner's 25th birthday) will prove to be the year that this definitve edition comes to fruition. If and when it does, I will gladly shell out my hard-earned money to own it.

Only time will tell.....

1 out of 5 stars DOES NOT HAVE EXTRA VERSIONS OF MOVIE BEWARE.......2007-05-19

VERY DISPOINTING SET HAS THE SAME DVD AVAILABLE ALL READY WITH JUST ONE VERISON, THERE WAS VHS VERSION THAT HAD THE NARRATION AND MORE GRAPHIC SCENES THAT WERE DELETED IN THE THEATRICAL VERSION FOR BEING TO GRAPHIC WHY CANT WE GET THIS VERSION ON DVD WHATS UP!

3 out of 5 stars interesting...........2007-02-18

I was very much conflicted over this movie. It is well directed and has depth to its themes but I had a hard time getting into this movie. At times the pace of the movie got so slow that it had a sedative effect on me. The backdrop of the futuristic world, is the real highlight of this movie. \

5 out of 5 stars Excelent film.......2007-01-17

I saw the film years ago, but this director's cut makes a big difference. I recommend Blade Runner to everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Ok dark future type movie.......2007-01-12

Harrison Ford was still hot after the Star Wars movies. Could never follow the "story" . Another overrated dark future beware of the evil robots movie done in noir style. Really, would anyone actually eat at one of those filthy outdoor noodle stands? And Harry always plays himself anyway. Skip this hokey, baloney crap and rent "The Day the Earth Stood Still" much better movie.

The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie
Chuck Jones directed some of the funniest shorts in the history of filmmaking, and this 1979 feature-length compilation includes several of his best cartoons. Among the 11 shorts shown in their entirety are the classics "Robin Hood Daffy," "What's Opera, Doc?," "Bully for Bugs," and "Duck Amuck," which remain as hilarious as they were when first released 50 years ago. As with any collection, the viewer wonders why some films were omitted or cut ("Long Haired Hare" combs footage from several Road Runner shorts into a 20-minute montage weakening the pacing). These caveats aside, The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Movie provides a showcase not only for Jones's razor-sharp timing, but for the work of his exceptional crew, which included designer Maurice Noble, writer Mike Maltese, composers Carl Stalling and Milt Franklyn, and voice actor Mel Blanc. --Charles Solomon
1001 Rabbit Tales
If Bugs Bunny were to direct his signature inquiry--"What's up, doc?"--toward the modern-day Warner Bros. creative team, he wouldn't be far off. For 1001 Rabbit Tales, they've doctored up a batch of classic cartoons featuring the carrot muncher and his bumbling comrades and bundled them, near seamlessly, into a feature-length film. Here's the premise: Bugs and Daffy, both book salesmen, are competing to sell the most copies of a kids' book. Instead of burrowing a beeline to his sales territory (he should have made a left at Albuquerque), Bugs ends up in the castle of Yosemite Sam, here a harem-leading honcho. Sam's pain-in-the-spurs son, Prince Abalaba, needs somebody to read him stories; Bugs, who'd sooner take the job than suffer the alternative, that involving being boiled in oil, signs on. Each rabbit-read narrative replaces a sedate story with a Loony Tunes favorite: In "Jack and the Beanstalk," a canary-keeping giant bellows "Fee, fi, fo, fat, I tawt I taw a puddy tat"; the witch in "Hansel and Gretel" develops a hankering for rabbit stew; "Goldilocks" goes feline as Sylvester swaps his porridge for suffering succotash on behalf of his bratty son. In the end, the varmint finds a way to vamoose, but, being a generous sort of bunny, he doesn't keep the address from his commission-hungry coworker. From there, the feathers fly, as does the rest of this feature, which is undiluted fun for fans of these cartoons from way back as well as those just getting to know the loopy Looney Tunes gang. (Ages 4 and older) --Tammy La Gorce

This DVD is absolutely excellent. The DVD medium provides a succinct and visual explanation of the ChiRunning method. Since using its principles, it has transformed my running to become much more enjoyable and increase the distance and comfort of my running. After lots of knee and foot weaknesses, I found this revolutionary approach extremely enabling. I also like the philosophical grounding. I was so impressed that ordered both the book and the ChiWalking book, too. Danny's zest for life is the opposite of how one might normally feel after a run so it a good indication of the method's success.

Sean Penn announced his retirement from acting, then wrote and directed this emotionally raw, somewhat sprawling film, suggested by Bruce Springsteen's song "Highway Patrolman." David Morse is the title character, an upstanding citizen and peace officer who tries to help his troubled--and troublesome--brother (Viggo Mortensen), recently returned from Vietnam. The brother and his girlfriend (Patricia Arquette) have bad news written all over them--but Morse does what he can to be protector, to no avail. Penn, whose model was John Cassavetes, favors long scenes that draw intense emotions from his cast, which includes Charles Bronson (in an unusually low-key role), Sandy Dennis, and Valeria Golino. But it's as depressing as Springsteen's song. --Marshall Fine

Be prepared for a very dark story however.Viggo Mortensen and David Morse play brothers who took different paths in life and we watch as one is unable to save the other from himself & his demons.Viet Nam is an integral part of Mortensen's disintegration and it ain't pretty. It is very moving however.David Morse, a fine actor, has never been better. There is a full frontal nude shot of Viggo but there's nothing sexy about it.Sean Penn has given us a film that's a lot like him.Intense, deep, brilliant and unsettling.Perhaps it's "a message".

4 out of 5 stars The train wreck you can't look away from.......2006-12-22

This fine movie probably didn't get as much attention as it merited because of its bleakness and because it represented Penn's earliest work as a director. It is much like watching the proverbial train wreck: devastating but irresistable. It is well worth enduring the pain for at least one viewing, which will leave a lasting impression. It can be a bit slow in places but is well-written, superbly acted, and beautifully photographed. Mortensen is fantastic - repulsive and heart-breaking as the hopelessly destructive younger brother. David Morse gives a beautiful performance of the anguished older brother, who has to determine at what point he stops trying to save his sibling from himself. The rest of the cast is equally fine, especially a young Patricia Arquette as Mortensen's love. This film is not only about the struggle between the two brothers, but about the mysterious inexorability of character. In the best tradition of good film-making, the former theme stands on its own and merely suggests the latter. Sad but memorable and kudos to Penn and his cast for making this film - it was obviously a labor of love.

4 out of 5 stars Shades Of: A History Of Violence.......2006-05-22

I see shades of Viggo's recent movie: A History Of Violence in this movie Sean Penn wrote and directed. This compelling film brought out emotional, heart wrenching scenes that cause the same emotion in the viewer. We see the 'good brother' Joey (David Morse)--a peace officer, trying to help his deeply troubled, Vietnam vet brother Frank (Viggo Mortensen).
On a personal note: Valeria Golino did a wonderful job in this movie as Joey's amazing, perfect wife.

True to most of Viggo's movies in his pre-Aragorn days, here he is as a self-absorbed, heartless sleaze ball who cares basically for no one but himself. Whether it was the war or his feelings that life itself has played him a cruel hand, Frank cannot come to grips with the impulses and the rage in him. The murder scene and the bar scene both bring to memory: A History Of Violence. In this movie as well, he is more of a victim who victimizes everyone around him. One can almost feel his pain as he weeps over his father's death and later says 'sorry' to his brother for every heartache he has caused in the past. Still, later, one learns to hate him.

I see Joey as this naýve man who cannot see the warning signs in those hurting around him, like his father (Charles Bronson) who tries reaching out to Joey and then admits defeat and ends it. Nor can he succeed in helping Frank see the good side of life and all that it has to offer. Frank's poor wife Dorothy (Patricia Arquette) though, took the worst of Frank's sick behavior during his rages and ultimate abandonment of her. It seems that no one can get through to Frank who sees how life has been good to Joey--as he remarks how 'you got a kiss in and a- -, and I got prison.' Well, Frank, what did you expect? Bad boys get prison. Still, in the end it's the good brother who makes the ultimate sacrifice in this intense, gripping film.
(Beware of nuttity and nudity)

Vig, a message to you. You look HOT as a construction worker. Just one question though, is this movie the one where you bonded with your old pal Dennis Hopper? Just wondering! I am looking forward to more of your films.

3 out of 5 stars Not very Entertaining.......2006-05-09

this movie was totally boring. I think Sean Penn should stick with acting or Direct a movie worth seeing. Viggo mortesen did a very well job on his role as frankie but thats it, the movie was totally boring.

If you liked this movie check out the soundtrack.

A bleak, but powerful 1960 British film that ranks as one of the most important United Kingdom imports of the decade. Director Tony Richardson (Tom Jones) tells the story of a rebellious social misfit and petty thief played by Tom Courtenay (The Dresser) who is picked to run on the track team at a reform school for boys. He finds he must balance his spirit and desire to win with his anger and frustration at the life he has led. At times a wrenching character study with no easy answers, Courtenay's performance is a touching portrait of a young man and the journey he takes as he tries to run not only for an unclear future, but from a past he cannot forget. A film indicative of the working class expressionism that came out of England in the early 1960s, Richardson's films stands alone as a downbeat, but insightful story of one man's struggle to determine who he is. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.......2007-06-28

One of the best of Britain's Angry Young Man films, Richardson's expressive drama hinges on the complex psychology of Colin, an uneducated but cunning youth still smarting from the recent death of his father. Richardson builds tension by cutting between the restrictions and tensions of reform-school life and Colin's recollection of events leading up to his arrest and detention. Courtenay ("of "Billy Liar" fame) gives a haunting performance in the title role, and Redgrave is masterful playing a cold rehabilitator obsessed with winning a trophy. For a powerful expression of working-class disaffection, go the distance with "Runner."

5 out of 5 stars Borstal Blues.......2007-06-11

Tony Richardson's "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" requires a lot from the viewer because it paints a pretty bleak picture of Britain in the early Sixties. Young Colin Smith(Tom Courtenay) is angry and rightly so. His father has died and his employer gives the family a pittance for his life's work. Mum indiscrimently wastes the money on silly things. Before Dad's body is cold Mum has already moved a male lover into the house. Society offers Colin little hope outside of mandatory conscription into the military or a dead-end factory job that probably bought his father an early grave. How does Colin lash out? A few wreckless acts like pinching an auto or breaking into a bakery and stealing a cash box. The last act lands Colin in reform school. At least there Colin can hope for some equity. No, not really because there's a pecking order there that usually depends on athletic prowess. So Colin takes up long distance running. Why does Colin run? Only he knows for sure and he's not telling. Courtenay is absolutely brilliant in a role that requires him to emote very little but convey the anger that seethes beneath the surface. Richardson expertly handles the different story threads here. The narrative requires him to go back and forth in time and the film is edited brilliantly. It's easy to lump this film with the other "angry young man" films that emerged from that time but "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" stands the test of time.

3 out of 5 stars DVD is slightly cropped.......2007-03-25

This is a wonderful British film and the DVD is an excellent transfer, except for one detail -- it has been cropped from its original 1.66 ratio (the prevailing British standard for the time) to 1.85. I wish they'd left it in its original form, as they did Julie Christie's Darling. It's a small bone of contention but to the purist these things matter.

5 out of 5 stars An incisive portrait of british establishment.......2005-06-23

" The loneliness of the long-distance runner " is a honest expresionist portrait of british working class. Director Tony Richardson developed a short-story by Alan Sillitoe, who collaborates as scripwriter in the film, for what's probably the movie that synthesizes better than any other the subversive spirit of Free Cinema, a cinematographic social phenomenon that joined a group of angry young men revolted against the narrow borders of a manipulative and hygienic industry interested in keeping under latch the miseries and contradictions of british establishment. The film condenses wonderfully almost everything of the innovations and social worries that have converted Free Cinema in the most important experience of british cinematography: the use of documentary film tecniques following the example of Humphrey Jannings' movies and the documentary school of John Grierson; independent production; antiestablisment criticism;antiacademic performances;the rebound of glamour and stylism; the use of montage strategies inspired in political russian cinematographers and innovative technologies as portable cameras; and the interest in reflecting underground social subjects.

Colin Smith(Tom Courtenay)is an intelligent and desillusioned teenager who has been sent to a reform school for youths from the low step of the british class pyramid due to a petty robbery in a bakery. Soon the reformatory governor ( Michael Redgrave ),obssesed in discipline and sports and in winning a cross country running competition against a local private school, ingratiates with him once he has could evaluate Colin's excellent background as long-distance runner, circumstance that supposes for him the favour of the reformatory governor and a excellent chance of getting a fast "freedom". During his "privileged" solitary runs outside the reformatory Colin reminds his life just before his incarceration, balancing his paradoxal situation. In the following lines I describe what I think are three representative moments of the combative ideology of the film and the " fresh " spirit of Free Cinema:the scene when the inmates revolts against their superiors in the reformatory's dinning-room for which Tony Richardson uses wisely montage tecniques learned of vanguardist russian directors as Eisenstein or Dovzhenko;the ironic portrait of the "society of comfort" where we see Colin's family spending the money of the insurance in a succcession of vignettes preceded by "advertising curtains" and enclosed with a sardonic music and, finally, the brilliant parallel-action montage where we see the inmates singing a patriotic song in the chapel of the reformatory while at the same moment in a looser cell of the building the inmate who had got to runaway days before is wildly punished. Another of the much achievements of this extraordinary film is the expressionist use of jazz music in the sequences of the solitary runs of Colin outside the reformatory gates.

For when another "free cinema" ?

5 out of 5 stars The British version of The Longest Yard.......2004-06-05

This was the story later used in the American film with Burt Reynolds, The Longest Yard. British actor, Tom Courtenay, in his first major film role plays the downcast, but likeable youth from the seedy side of town.

Courtenay's character is saturated with events in his life for which he has no control. He lives in poverty, his father dies, his mother's waiting in the wings-boyfriend is a jerk, and he has no job skills or future. He is ultimately placed in a youth detention facility where he finds, to his warden's joy, that he has athletic ability. He is ambivalent about this skill, but he can obtain privileges and possible early freedom if only he wins the running trophy for the warden.

The Burt Reynolds film, centered on his character developing an interest in his fellow prisoners to decide on how to respond to the warden's promised rewards and punishments. The British version focuses almost completely on the character's internal conflict. Ultimately, his decision is based on how he could best gain an aspect of control in his life. His decision is based not for his peers, and not for the authorities, but for his own sense of self. Aspects of the youth prison may seem funny by today's standard, but the story remains fresh and interesting. I highly recommend it.

The Fast Runner turns the frozen landscape of northern Canada into the stage for an adventure as sweeping as The Odyssey or Beowulf. Adapted from an Inuit legend, The Fast Runner centers on Atanarjuat, a charismatic young hunter struggling for the affections of Atuat, who has already been promised to Oki, the son of the camp's leader. When Atuat chooses Atanarjuat, Oki seems to accept it, but later events turn his anger and hatred into a murderous spite. This story, as passionate and primal as any film noir, is framed by the daily lives of the Inuit--a struggle for survival that is both simple and vivid, foreign yet immediately understandable. No one in the cast is a professional actor, but the performances are direct and compelling, telling a story that is both epic and intimate. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars This is an Insult!.......2007-04-10

I would NEVER have purchased this movie had I really known of it's contents. It is an insult to the Native American race, filled with sex, violence, nudity, and witchcraft. This protrays the Indians in a very poor manner and is spoken in an Indian language, and subtitled in English. I do not object to this but the subtitles are on the screen so quickly that you miss a lot of what is being said. I would not even rate this movie a ONE!

5 out of 5 stars "I can only sing this song to someone who understands it." Give yourself half a chance and you will........2007-03-03

"Evil came to us like death and we just had to live with it," says the legend teller. The Fast Runner is a powerful, fascinating film about an Inuit community of less than two dozen people, living their lives above the Arctic Circle anywhere from a thousand to a couple hundred years ago. Their world is made up of vast frozen tundra and endless snow combined with the claustrophobia of living together in such close quarters that there are no secrets. Their survival and happiness depend on everyone living together in harmony. When the leadership of this group is assumed under questionable circumstances, when a rival is humiliated and when power is worked unfairly, evil descends on the group. The feelings of envy, ambition and lust which lead to murder may be familiar to anyone in any culture; how this plays out in such a small group of people and in such cold, severe conditions turns this movie into a unique and engrossing experience.

Saari is the leader of the group. He has a son, Oki (Peter-Henry Amatsiaq), and a daughter, Puja (Lucy Tulugarjuk). Tulmaq, now dead, had been a rival for leadership long ago, but had been humiliated until his spirit was broken. He had two sons, Amaqjuaq, who was called the Strong One, and Atanarjuat (Natar Ungalaaq), who was called the Fast Runner. Oki has grown to be a bully. As a child he and Ayuat (Sylvia Ivalu) were promised to each other, but now she and Atanarjuat have fallen in love. Oki and Atanarjuat settle the issue in a brutal fight. In front of the group, they stand facing each other. Then they take turns deliberately hitting each other on the side of the head as powerfully as they can. The one who fails to get up loses, and that is Oki. From then on we see how Oki's resentments and envy, and his sister's own trouble-making, lead to murder. By the time this small community casts out evil, Amaqjuaq is dead and Atanarjuat has barely escape with his life, running naked over ice fields and through pools of icy water, pursued by three killers, Oki in the lead. If nothing else does, this race against death will stay with you. Atanarjuat survives and finally returns to the group, where justice is meted out.

This film puts us in the middle of this tiny community. We see how they live, how they hunt, how they survive, they way they build an igloo, what they butcher and how they eat, how they dress. More powerfully, we see how they must adjust and accommodate. This is a community so small that resentments must be settled early, where humor can be direct, where intimacy is a part of the life; and where jealousy, envy, trouble-making, love and passion are the same as everywhere else. "I can only sing this song to someone who understands it," the legend teller says at the beginning of the movie. The story is long (172 minutes), the language, Inukitut, is strange, the environment is frigid and unforgiving. But the people come from the same pool of humanity as we do. Give this film half a chance and you'll find you understand the song.

The DVD picture and audio are excellent. There are no significant extras. If you enjoy films which concern themselves with people of dramatically different cultures, you might find interesting The Story of the Weeping Camel, Himalaya, Close to Eden and Saltmen of Tibet.

5 out of 5 stars Running Ahead of the Pack.......2006-10-29

Reviewers have rightly invoked the writing of Joseph Campbell's Heroe studies in their reports on 'Atanarjuat'. Its epic sweep ia as far removed from Campbell's directorial acolyte, George Lucas, as one could imagine. Not its story content, which Campbell well knew, but in its touch of authentic telling. Its mythic narrative has no resemblance to,'The Ring','Harry Potter' and their ilk. It bursts spontaneously upon its audience, free from Hollywood, box-office self-consciousness, endowed with scale, patience, pace and nuance of place, and NO pedantry. The camera takes us us up close, smelling, in touching reach of fur, flesh, piss and blood, the fumes of arctic life, and by contrasting these with the vast and barren surrounds, speaks eloquently of how this country impacts on these people, and how such myths came into being and continue their relevance. In this context, the struggle of adultery, revenge and shamanistic powers glove together seamlessly, explicably, but without a trace of moral grandstanding. It's a superb model for film-makers, a brilliant piece for jaded viewers, and probably impossible to conceive, even granted a wish to emulate(artistic envy) stirred in the hearts of Hollywood filmakers.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid Account of Shamans, Sorcery, and Love Rivalry.......2006-10-03

This Inuit tale set in what later become the Northern Canadian Arctic is an old myth brought to life. A love triangle on both sides brings out an maliscious shaman bent on cursing Atanarjuat who must conquer and break the spell through his own tests of endurance. A vivid must see!

5 out of 5 stars Utterly transporting, brilliant visuals, entertaining story..........2006-09-14

A murder mystery set in the far north and recorded in an Inuit language... sounds like a long shot. Sounds almost certainly boring.

In fact, this is one of the most visually striking movies I have ever watched. Many scenes are world-class, and a few are among the most remarkable ever recorded: not just the arctic scenery, which is strange and sublime, but the igloo interiors, the now-famous run accross the ice, the many lingering close-ups in which no acting is evident, the low sun seen through and off of snow... Suspend disbelief and watch this movie.

Beyond the visuals, I have to say that the acting, which achieves a very enviable transparency and un-self-conscious immediacy, drew me to these characters like no other movie since Derzu Uzala. When the screen went black at the end I felt truly disoriented, as though stepping from one universe to another. The movie is utterly transporting. Hardly a moment wasn't completely convincing. I rate this a work of true originality, creative genius, and clear vision.

5 out of 5 stars Watch it again and again and...........2007-05-18

Without a doubt one of the most inspiring movies I have ever seen. David Horton is not only an exceptional runner he is also a very interesting person, who comes across as very sympathetic and thoughtful throughout the movie.
The movie is filled with great footage of the run itself and runners from all over the place and just looking at it makes you want to go for a run, although perhaps not AS long as the ones Horton prefers.
I wish there where more movies like this and I would buy each and every one of them.

THis was inspiring. I ran my first Ultra distance last October (2006) and thought I woudl never do it again. Having kept an eye on Dean Karnazes as well as seeing thismovie, I'm re-inspired to do it again in '08. Looking forward to the biography of Dean Karnazes by Journey Film

5 out of 5 stars surpassed my expectations.......2007-03-17

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie more than i anticipated. David Horton is such an interesting person and it was really great to be able to follow him thru this adventure of his. Also, the movie did show aspects of Horton's life, including his classes at the local college he is a professor, his family, his running routine and his RD'ing.

3 out of 5 stars The DVD is ok.......2007-03-09

I wanted to see more of the running and more of details of the physical impact of all of that running. I wanted to hear about how they dealt with it from a runners point of view. I think the movie is ok from a broader perspective of the big journey, it just wasn't what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Chalked full of emotion. .......2007-02-17

"The Runner", a film about Dr. David Horton's attempt to set the speed record for running the entire 2,600 mile Pacific Crest Trail is more than a film about running or extreme endurance sports. This documentary provides us with a glimpse into the soul of a very unique individual. The film catches Dr. Horton's emotional vulnerability, his personal struggles and the conflict between the love for his family and the love of his sport. This film weaves Dr. Horton's legendary ultra running career with spectacular footage of the PCT. The director provides us with real time running footage and an emotional ending that will inspire not only the veteran athlete, but anyone who chooses to pursue their life passion.

When Ridley Scott's cut of Blade Runner was finally released in 1993, one had to wonder why the studio hadn't done it right the first time--11 years earlier. This version is so much better, mostly because of what's been eliminated (the ludicrous and redundant voice-over narration and the phony happy ending) rather than what's been added (a bit more character development and a brief unicorn dream). Star Harrison Ford originally recorded the narration under duress at the insistence of Warner Bros. executives who thought the story needed further "explanation"; he later confessed that he thought if he did it badly they wouldn't use it. (Moral: Never overestimate the taste of movie executives.) The movie's spectacular futuristic vision of Los Angeles--a perpetually dark and rainy metropolis that's the nightmare antithesis of "Sunny Southern California"--is still its most seductive feature, an otherworldly atmosphere in which you can immerse yourself. The movie's shadowy visual style, along with its classic private-detective/murder-mystery plot line (with Ford on the trail of a murderous android, or "replicant"), makes Blade Runner one of the few science fiction pictures to legitimately claim a place in the film noir tradition. And, as in the best noir, the sleuth discovers a whole lot more (about himself and the people he encounters) than he anticipates.... With Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, and M. Emmet Walsh. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Original internet humor comes to DVD.......2005-11-19

Strong Bad is the lead character in the animated fictional world of Homestar Runner, in which he answers emails from fans throughout the world who have visited the actual website. The answers Strong Bad gives to these emails are each the subject of 100 comedic animations under one minute in length and are the centerpiece of this DVD. Strong Bad is modeled after a Mexican wrestler from Nintendo's "Tag Team Wrestling", and the creators obviously like poking fun of 1980's era computing by featuring Strong Bad's computer the "Compy 386", and then when that computer is destroyed by a virus- and a shotgun - the "Lappy 486". My favorite emails include:
"trevor the vampire"- An incomplete email from Trevor the Vampire has Strong Bad fearing the worst- that Trevor has been done in by vampire hunters!
"credit card"-Strongbad gets "phished" by someone seeking his credit card information & forwards the email to Homestar. Homestar gives out his credit card info and Strongbad proceeds to buy a spaceship, rocket launcher, killer robot, and 200 bean burritos using the information.
"techno"-Strong Bad gets an e-mail asking if he likes techno. He proceeds to make up and sing a techno song of his own, with accompanyment by The Cheat.
"english paper"- Strongbad writes an English paper for someone- convinced that the secret to success is to have a cool knickname- in this case "Kyle the Yellow Dart"-, and to tape some money to the last page of the report.
My personal all-time favorite is "dragon" in which Strong Bad displays his "skills as an artist" as he shows Strong Mad, Strong Sad, and CoachZ how to draw a dragon. Strong Bad names his own drawing "Trogdor the Burninator". Trogdor is mentioned on the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a tribute by Joss Whedon, who happens to be a big fan of Strong Bad.
In short, the Strong Bad emails are hilarious and the accompanying commentaries and extras found on the DVD are great and are suitable for kids and adults alike. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Coach Z is "deep-southern accented?".......2005-06-10

The Coach is so upper-midwestern, dude. I'm surprised I haven't heard him say "You betcha!" yet. You need to get your accents together. And YOU, reader of this review, must get with the picture and check out homestarrunner.com. You don't have to buy this DVD... right now. Just wait until you've watched every freakin' episode of Teen Girl Squad and well up with tears at the thought of losing this site someday to the great domain in the sky. Then you'll be crawling back here if you haven't already had the forsight to buy this DVD. There. I'm done.
