Having based so much of his career on the films from the region, Jean Claude Van Damme heads to Hong Kong itself for Knock Off. Set in the 72 hours running up to the British handover to China (and released a mere year after the actual event), the film's action centers around the colony's thriving bootleg business, tied in with a rather convoluted plot concerning the CIA, Russian Mafia, and an attempt to hold the United States ransom through covert attacks. The opening section unwisely tries Van Damme's hand at knockabout humor with partner Rob Schneider but merely proves that the star is severely lacking the sort of humorous touch that Arnold Schwarzenegger has so successfully utilized. Once Knock Off descends into more familiar Van Damme territory, the film--and its leading man--are on surer ground. There are a good deal of spectacular fight sequences, some amazing stunts, and a feisty female sparring partner in the form of Lela Rochen. Even the always-reliable Paul Sorvino pops up. Director Tsui Hark hits upon some interesting and initially invigorating visual effects but soon overdoes them, actually highlighting the lack of decent story rather than enhancing it. There is an incredible film to be made about this period in history but this isn't it. Knock Off is merely another undemanding, high-kicking, high-octane vehicle for Van Damme. --Phil Udell

A Dog.......2007-03-26
This movie is a dog, pure and simple. We ended up with two of these are the freebie give aways for the last few DVD players we bought. They can't sell it, so they're giving them away. Hide ...fast !
Excellent.......2006-11-10
This product was brand new like you always say and the picture quality and image was clear to understand. Thanks for a job well done and I look forward to do more business with you now and in the future. Once again, thanks for a job well done and keep up the good work.
A+ material.......2005-09-25
Excellent movie. The plot is great. The bringing of Rob Schneider and JCVD to one movie might have seemed like a bad idea at first, but they really pulled it off, this movie was one of the funnest movies I ever seen JVCD played in, it still is an action just like all his other movies. They do some non-stop action in China. Their are these pants that can rip apart easily cause their called Knockoffs.
Van Damme was AXED by Hollywood for this Flop. .......2005-07-04

I am a Jean Claude Van Damme fan, but this movie "Knock Off"
ruinned Van Damme's career in 1998 which lead to his demise from the big screen across the country (USA). Since then, many of his movies have gone straight to video. All of his movies before had solid box office ticket sales, and yes there was a time in where his movies were shown across the country, and yes he appeared on the talk shows to talk about them, but those days are long gone. Knock off has a dumb plot, and the leading lady who is a nice African American woman was placed in a stupid light by the silly director. I have followed his career (Van Damme's)since the 80's when he used to appear on the "Arsenio Hall Show" but this is film that was made in order to generate huge dollars, failed big. It is obvious that Hollywood has never given Van Damme the credit that he deserves but he really did himself in with this picture. The picture has no order nor depth. People or should i say faithful fans of him will say that i am wrong but after 1998, his films are not shown on the screen at whatever cinema you go to here in the USA. Next, The former SNL Comedian star who appears here lacks chemistry with the lead actor, the two are mismatched. The relationship lacks chemistry, and this hurts the flow of the story. I don't recommened Knock off at all, but i do recommend Van Damme's "In Hell" which was directed by Ringo Lam. "In Hell" (2003)will have classic Prison fighting as compared to his "Kick boxing" style that he has used in past movies such as "Cyborg" and "Hard Target."
-------- "In Hell" in the eyes of blockbuster is considered a gem. ****True Fact*** it was stated on a fan site that Van Damme's dvd/video release dates are always jotted down by the major movie companies (companies who have Tom Cruise, Juliane Moore and Tom Hanks for example.)So when Van Dammes films are released so are the films of the A list celebrities. Any way, don't buy Knock off, instead rent it for a dollar at the video store in case you want to watch it but this is not classic Van Damme. For any new fan of Van Damme who wants to watch a great movie of his, i recommend the following: Lion Heart, Cyborg (very action packed), and In Hell. He was going to do a movie titled, "The Monk" but i don't know what happened there. I guess it did not get released,or made, i believe it was going to be directed by Ringo Lam(Diretor of the action packed In Hell, starring Jean Claude Van Damme(real name):Jean Claude Van Varenberg.) He was given this name back in the late 80's or early nineties, and this is what he was called, "The muscles from Brussels." He was born in the country Belgium.
How did this movie flop?.......2004-04-15
This was a really cool movie with great stunts, great comedy, and great camera views. This was plain and simply one of the best JCVD movies ever. I find amazing how this film, Leigonaire, and Universal Soldier:The Return all did not revive his career. It is a total mind F*** to figure this out. The plot was a little confusing at first but if you really pay attention you will get the idea of the movie.

Nowhere to Run
Poor Rosanna Arquette ended up in this Van Damme potboiler about an escaped convict who moves onto the farm of a widow (Arquette) and her two kids. Stuff happens: a cop who likes her gets jealous and beats up the Muscles from Brussels (but only after handcuffing him), there's a fire in the barn, bad guys are trying to drive her away, etc. The story was first developed by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct) and the late director Richard Marquand (Eye of the Needle). Eszterhas wrote the script, but who knows what direction this story was originally going? Van Damme's best film is still Timecop, and this is a long way from the quality of that. --Tom Keogh
