This John Irvin film is a small, hard-edged little gem, full of crisp action and tough-minded codes of honor. Harvey Keitel stars as a retired professional criminal whose younger brother (Timothy Hutton) lures him to Los Angeles for a can't-miss heist in Palm Springs. But Hutton hasn't picked his other partners very well, particularly wheelman Stephen Dorff: when it's time to divvy up the spoils, Dorff kills Hutton and a fourth partner and tries to rub out Keitel. Keitel escapes, however, and trails Dorff back to L.A., where he also figures out which Chinese mob he's tied in with. It's strictly revenge time from there on out, with Keitel as the one-man wrecking crew cutting a bloody swath through the L.A. underworld. Keitel is grittily good, a man of few words and many bullets, while Dorff is an enjoyably sleazy psychopath. A violently propulsive little noir. --Marshall Fine

Keitel.......2007-02-01

This was better than I thought it would be, particularly due to Keitel and Janssen's performances. A little more Timothy Hutton would have been terrific too, as their relationship, as brothers was a success.
After all, this genre (betrayal & underworld/a brothers revenge)isn't original. But the environmental use of Los Angeles' working class and industrial areas adds it to a list that includes To Live and Die in L.A., The Limey, Heat, and Training Day...A good list indeed.
But I return to Keitel who stabalizes this film, even with the histriotics of Stephen Dorff and the so-so script.

Excellent movie!.......2006-12-22

This is a very exciting movie that draws you into the storyline early on, and holds the viewers attention all the way through to the climactic moment! Highly recommended!

Fun noir........2006-08-15

City of Industry (John Irvin, 1997)

Okay, so pretty much everyone who knows this movie exists knows it because Lucy Liu is topless for roughly forty-five seconds of this film. Which is too bad, because it's a fun little slice of noir that's sure to please.

Roy Egan (Harvey Keitel) is a professional thief who's getting ready to retire. His brother Lee (Timothy Hutton, fresh off the success of Playing God) convinces him to put off retirement to do one more job, robbing the Russian Mob of three million dollars' worth of contraband diamonds. Also in on the job are Jorge Montana (the late Wade Dominguez, of Dangerous Minds fame) and Skip Kovich (Blade's Stephen Dorff), the getaway driver. Things go horribly wrong in the worst possible way: Skip kills Lee and Jorge, and narrowly misses Roy, who (of course) vows revenge. The bulk of the film is Roy tracking Skip, while being hidden by Jorge's wife Rachel (Famke Janssen). Meanwhile, the Russians aren't too happy with being hit, either.

Good, solid action, a fast pace, and some decent acting make this one worth watching. Oh, yeah, and there's a Lucy Liu semi-nude scene, in case you hadn't heard. *** ½

Potent noir film!.......2005-07-27

The film runs with astonishing intensity, with verycredible characters, very well written and solid script that will catch your attention.
Obviously there are certain codes that maintain the whole interest in the film. There are certain thieves who still believe in the word: loyaly and honesty, and this is not a cynical expression.
So in this state of things you can look behind through the time, essential and related films: here I go: Point blank, Reservoir dogs( the best film noir of the nineties in USA),Le cercle rouge and Rififi. Four astonishing and crucial films that defy any possible match.
But the fabulous presence of Harvey Keitel, Stephen Dorff and Timothy Hutton make of this thriller a true tour de force; the increasing tension will struggle you from start to finish.
A remarkable and neglected picture of this year.

Rappers Pras and Ja Rule star as Diamond and Gage, drug-dealing buddies on the mean streets of New York, in this energetic but hopelessly muddled hip-hop crime thriller. "I can't guarantee I'll be there for you," Diamond lamely sputters to his pregnant girlfriend before heading back out for a night of music and gunplay, coming to life with two-fisted ferocity as he coolly empties clip after clip into rival gangs. Director-screenwriter Robert Adetuyi never worries about reconciling the two sides of Diamond, and the contradictory clichés about loyalty and responsibility are delivered without a trace of irony. The John Woo-inspired action scenes are the highlights of the film, flashy, high-energy explosions of excitement that reveal Diamond as a cool-headed, criminally sharp gangster at heart. He just doesn't know it, and the film is too embarrassed to admit it. This glib, sense-numbing action fantasy coasts on the energy of the action and the music while having it both ways: violence without personal consequences and decisions without repercussions. --Sean Axmaker

All in all a respectable movie. Obviously no urban movies are gunna be winning awards but if given the proper amount of showing to audiences this movie could rate up there with the best urban movies. Ja rule's acting is amazing for a freshman appearence and pras hits the sympathetic actor alrite. I give it about 7.5/10 on my scale and would highly suggest watching it to any fan of hip hop. The soundtrack to go with it/songs preformed within the movie by ja rule and pras are also very good.

The plot was tired, but the acting was ok especially Ja Rule who seemed a natural to his role. Not a bad first outing Ja.
Pras co-produced and I think he should stick to doing that. His character just seemed too disinterested, or perhaps it was just Pras.
Props to Robert Adetuyi for writing and directing - Jolly good show mah men, but did the editing kill the flow?

I gave it a chance and not suprisingly I was thoroughly sickened. This is one of the latest in a crop of Hip Hop crime dramas featuring the same horrible rappers that fuel the ... soundtracks in the acting roles. This movie left a foul taste in my mouth and quite a headache. This is further proof that Rap is ruining all forms of entertainment. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this incorrigible trash. Word Yo!
