Robert Towne is one of Hollywood's most celebrated screenwriters, but because his directorial efforts have been few and far between, anticipation was high when this star-powered crime story was released in 1988. Critical reaction was decidedly mixed, but there's plenty to admire in this silky, visually seductive film about a drug dealer (Mel Gibson) whose best friend from high-school (Kurt Russell) is now working for the Los Angeles sheriff's drug detail. Their personal and professional conflicts are intensified by their love for the same woman, a waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) at the Italian restaurant they both frequent. There's a big deal going down with a drug lord (the late Raul Julia), but as it twists and turns, Towne's story is really more about personal loyalties and individual honor. And even if it doesn't quite hold together, the movie's got a fantastic look to it (courtesy of the great cinematographer Conrad Hall), and the three stars bring depth and dimension to their well-written roles. --Jeff Shannon

A Must See Movie!!.......2007-03-26
This is an all time drug dealer/love story/ friendship classic tale, done with lots of polish and always fun to watch Mel Gibson too!
a good one.......2007-03-08
One test of a good movie (or book) is whether the film leaves you invested enough in the characters to wonder what happens to them after the movie ends. This movie passes this test with flying colors given the depth and subtlety that Kurt Russell, Mel Giblson, Michell Pfeifer and Raul Julia bring to their characters. This more than makes up for the occasional melodramatic line. Also, the criticism that the plot twists are cliche/ and make for a forced crime thriller are not quite on the mark since the real twists are psychological and refer back to the ambiguities in the characters themselves.
A letdown with nothing really special to offer except some interestings thoughts on friendship; "C+".......2007-02-17
This is a movie that tries to be overly complicated and clever and really is only saved by how successful the theme of `friendship' is played out over the course of the story. The idea of Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell being friends on opposite sides of the law keeps you interested and certain parts of the movie capture that theme quite well, but a lack of overall originality in the script and some poor characterizations let the story down: I could not buy into Gibson as the drug dealer-type and the writers gave us the most superficial of renderings with regards to Pfeifer's character. Given the interesting combination of having Gibson and Russell in the same film, the cool title itself, and an opening title sequence that really establishes a moody tone for the story, `Tequila Sunrise' was a letdown.
One of my Favorite movies!.......2006-12-27
I love this movie - have every line memorized! What great actors for fantastic characters. Many classic moments of suspence, romance and comedy.
Romance anyone??.......2006-12-04
This movie bombed at the box office but I rented it anyway because I am a huge Mel Gibson fan. In my opinion, Mel looks hotter in this movie than any others he's been in. I absolutely LOVED this movie. I am a hopeless romantic and this movie has it all. Granted, the plot may not be entirely realistic and may be about a former drug dealer, but I don't go to the movies to see perfect people in perfect situations. This is my all time favorite movie and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance with action in the mix :-)

Description
Mel's the man for screen excitement! Mel Gibson leads Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer in Tequila Sunrise (Side A). Robert Towne (Chinatown) writes and directs a volatile mix of romance and suspense involving a contraband smuggler (Gibson) who claims he's gone straight, a cop (Russell) who's a boyhood pal of the smuggler, and a restaurateur (Pfeiffer) who may be a pawn in the men's moves and countermoves. Gibson brings gonzo brilliance to Conspiracy Theory (Side B), starring with Julia Roberts in a funny, fierce thriller about a New York cabbie (Gibson) who becomes a hunted man when one of his crackpot theories turns out to be ominously true. Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon) directs this wild action ride.
