In between the Hollywood productions Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon, Hong Kong's most popular export, Jackie Chan, returned home to indulge his romantic side in this modern fairy tale. He plays a modern Prince Charming, a big business mogul and notoriously eligible big-city bachelor to dreamy teenager Shu Qi, a girl from a Taiwan fishing village. When a heartbreaking message in a bottle washes ashore, she traces it back to Hong Kong, where she meets Jackie in the midst of a mid-ocean brawl on a luxury yacht. Hong Kong heartthrob Tony Leung has a grand time spoofing his image, playing a gay fashion photographer who "adopts" Shu Qi and helps her woo her handsome dream lover. It's a pleasant change to see 40-plus Jackie discard his usual goofy lovesick fool to play a suave swinger, but next to giggly teen Shu Qi, who proves to be a spunky and winning actress, he seems a little too mature. There are still plenty of opportunities to see Jackie in acrobatic action with a subplot involving a boyhood friend turned shady business rival, but at heart it's a sweet, silly little love song full of unabashed romantic imagery, elegant art design, snazzy fashions, and a gooey happy ending. Jackie doesn't provide his own voice in the English dubbed edition, which makes a minor dent in his charm but does little to affect the film as a whole. --Sean Axmaker

Subtle is not the word to describe Drop Dead Gorgeous, a mock documentary purporting to cover the Sarah Rose Cosmetics Teen America Beauty Pageant in Mount Rose, Minnesota. Ellen Barkin (Sea of Love) and Kirsten Dunst (Interview with a Vampire, Dick) are perfectly cast as a mother and daughter whose only ambition is to use the pageant to get out of their claustrophobic small-town lives. Opposing them are Denise Richards (Wild Things, Starship Troopers) and her mother, Kirstie Alley (Look Who's Talking), who just happens to be the pageant's organizer. The plot, which centers on contestants being murdered (mostly by flaming explosions), is clearly secondary to the backstage shenanigans and satirical portrayals of vanity, small-town corruption, and family dysfunction. There's not much suspense to the pageant itself, but Dunst is an endearing protagonist and along with the broad jokes are some excellent acting turns from the cast, particularly Barkin, Brittany Murphy (Clueless), Nora Dunn (a Saturday Night Live alumna), and the great character actress Allison Janney, who's played small roles in countless movies but finally gets a chance to shine as the supportive neighbor of Barkin and Dunst. In fact, for all the jokes and satirical jabs, in the end it's the characters' relationships that stay in your mind. A bonus: the soundtrack features a hard-rocking version of the theme from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, performed with cool aplomb by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. --Bret Fetzer

horrible service.......2007-05-13
had to get in contact first because it was never shipped. recieved sincere apology and a promise to have it shipped immediately... was NOT shipped immediately. took 2 1/2 months for a movie that is a ten years old to be shipped to me. Dissapointed with service.
drop dead gorgeous.......2007-02-06
first rate light comedy. highest marks for the casting; esp. kirsten dunst.
Drop Dead Gorgeous.......2007-01-23
If you are a Lutheran with parents who were both born in Minnesota, you can really appreciate the humor in this movie. The Minnesota accent is great, and the reference to Lutefisk really put it over the top for me. Eventhough I grewup in Southern California, my parents brought their Scandinavian customs, so we had Lutefisk for Christmas and New Years. Also, the Womans Lutheran Gun Club was a nice touch. Bottom line, this is a very funny movie.
This is no mere teen comedy!.......2007-01-23
One of the funniest films to come out in a long time, `Drop Dead Gorgeous' delivers on every page, from it's collective cast to it's genuine laughs. In true mockumentary style this film follows a group of girls as they compete in the Sarah Rose Cosmetics Teen American Beauty Pageant in Mount Rose, Minnesota. This group includes the sweet girl who everyone loves, namely Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst) and the social queen whom everyone loathes, namely Rebecca Leeman (Denise Richards). Amber is the talented poor girl who everyone feels should win the whole shebang, but standing in her way every step of the way is talentless rich girl Becky and her mother Gladys (Kirstie Alley who is absolutely fantastic!) who just so happens to be hosting the pageant.
The interaction between the contestants coupled with the over-dramatized drama and competitive spirit make for an entertaining comedy that will have you in stitches scene after scene. Helping this film along are great comedic performances by it's entire cast, Dunst included who just shines in every role she undertakes (why is she not `Oscar Nominated' Kirsten Dunst yet???). Ellen Barkin is fantastic as Amber's mother Annette (trailer park at its finest) and Allison Janney is a pure scene stealer as their neighbor and friend Loretta. The rest of the girls competing are great as well, Brittany Murphy and Amy Adams being recognizable faces, and Michael McShane is hilarious as Harold the overweight father of a mentally handicapped son.
Look for plenty of memorable scenes like when Harold's son gets his pants caught in the car door or when the previous winner of the pageant comes out on stage to sing `Don't Cry Out Loud' (my favorite scene). There is a lot to love here and for that I'm sure many will find this film to be not only hilariously enjoyable but worthy of repeat viewings for it's one of those films that just never gets old. Put this up there with `Best in Show' as one of the most ingenious comedies to come along in quite some time!
Extremely Subversive.......2007-01-13
Imagine a weird blend of "This Is Spinal Tap" and "Fargo" and you will have a fairly good read on 1999's "Drop Dead Gorgeous. There is definitely a Coen Brothers feel to the film, which is done in "mockumentary" style and told from the point of view of a film crew investigating the world of local beauty pageants; specifically the Miss Teen Princess contest in Mount Rose, Minnesota.
But it would be a mistake to think that this is just a satire of the beauty pageant world or of folks from Minnesota. The film has much bigger targets, as it pretty much takes on every excess to be found in the competitive culture of modern American. Making it the most subversive comedy since "Dr. Strangelove". It may not have the consistency of Kubrick's masterpiece, but it has a slightly higher comic hit to miss ratio than "Airplane".
Former Miss Teen Princess Gladys Leeman (Kirstie Alley) is in charge of the Mount Rose preliminary, a conflict of interest because her daughter Becky (Denise Richards) (a younger version of her mercenary mother) is a leading contender. After murdering her daughter's only real competition, Gladys targets trailer-park girl Amber (Kirsten Dunst), who hopes to use the contest as a means to follow in the footsteps of her idol Diane Sawyer.
There are so many different types of humor in "Drop Dead Gorgeous" that almost any viewer will find something amusing. But the degree of amusement will be in direct proportion to your degree of irreverence and "nothing sacred" attitudes. So if you are easily offended or are sense of humor challenged you would do well to stay away from this film.
I particularly liked the contestant's dramatic reading from "Soylent Green", and Britney Murphy's line about being conceived because her parents wanted someone who could donate a kidney to her older brother.
Although she only has a small part, Murphy pretty much steals every scene in which she appears. The three big parts (Alley, Richards, and Dunst) are played straight (or with parodied straightness) so most of the comedy comes from the supporting cast; most notably Allison Janney as a trailer park neighbor, Will Sasso as a mentally challenged small businessman, Seiko Matsudo as the resentful biological daughter of an Asian couple who dote on their adopted Caucasian daughter, and Matt Malloy as a contest judge with a not so secret agenda.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

Customer Reviews:
Decent Jackie movie.......2006-10-03
So I was pretty impressed with Gorgeous until the end came around. I enjoyed the non violence theme and could definitely get with the humor that I was being given. Odd, but still funny and enjoyable. Seeing Jackie in a non comedic role was very interesting. You won't find that very often. The first fight Jackie has with Brad Allen is certainly gorgeous but the finale is just pure crapola. I really wish they wouldn't have turned to the comedy and made Jackie into the stupid character he always plays. Shu Qi does a very good job in trying to make herself Jackie's love interest. Fun movie, could have been way better though.
I was really looking forward to the Jackie commentary and while it was very informative, it was just an interview and he wasn't actually watching the movie with us, at least it seemed that way. The making of also gives you an more of an inside view of the film. You can tell that the cast and crew had one heck of a good time making this movie.
fairly pretty maybe.......2006-10-01
Gorgeous is a lot different than most of Jackie Chan's films. In this movie, a love story is the focus, and it results in less action scenes than most of Jackie Chan's movies. Fortunately, there are 2 fight scenes in this movie that still make Gorgeous worth getting.
The first hour of the film is slow, developing the love story, and only has 2 small action scenes involving goons against the Jackie Chan character, "C.H. Chan". After an hour, the story and action begins to pick up, with the first of two fights involving Chan against a small, white kickboxer from overseas, who is very quick and skilled. The last fight in the movie is truly spectacular, again with Chan against his short opponent. The whole scene lasts almost 10 minutes.
Besides Chan and his kickboxing opponent, most of the characters in Gorgeous aren't very entertaining, at least the English dubbing may make it seem that way cause it is bad. The movie doesn't even have Jackie Chan's English dubbed voice, which he usually does for his movies. The whole love story thing just didn't work for me - the girl seemed more like a 17 year old spoiled brat, while C.H. Chan had to be in his mid 30's at least.
Gorgeous may not appeal to the avergae Jackie Chan fan except for the final 30 minutes of the movie. The fights are awesome, and again some of the best on screen, but the rest of the movie was just too boring and cheesy.
Charming, romantic, fun.......2006-06-19
Gorgeous is a modern fairy-tale that blends traditional romance-comedy themes with Jackie Chan's trademark sense of action. A teenage country girl finds a romantic message in a bottle and travels to Hong Kong to find its sender. Though that doesn't exactly work out like planned, she does meet Chan's character, a millionarie industrialist. As the two get to know each other, a business rival plots to humiliate Chan by pitting him against an American fighter.
This love story works quite well, thanks to the strengths of its leads. Shu Qi's cuteness, spunky personality and exaggerated facial expressions set the movie's tone, while it's nice to see the always-loveable Jackie Chan play a different role (though really, Jackie Chan plays Jackie Chan in all the movies he does). It's not a revolutionary plot, and a few scenes could have been better executed (the obligatory 'break-up' before the happy ending is rather weak), but on the whole the mushy side of me ate it up. Jackie Chan does romance quite well.
There are also some fight sequences sprinkled here and there; two are classic Jackie Chan where he uses the environment against his opponents, and the other two are showcase-quality fights against Bradley James Allan, a member of Jackie's own stunt team. These fights, well-executed that they are, feel tacked-on to the movie. It's like someone was afraid fans wouldn't respond well to a Jackie Chan movie without fights, and so contrived a few for the heck of it. In keeping with the movie's lighthearted tone, the bad guys arent really evil, and the fights are either cartoonish or done in a manner where the combatants show respect to each other. It's a nice variation.
Gorgeous really won me over. The dvd loses a star for not including the uncut version, though it includes a Jackie Chan commentary that the Hong Kong version doesn't. Great date movie that has something for guys and girls, and worth seeing for anyone curious about a 'Jackie Chan romance'.
A fun movie..........2006-03-12
This was a good movie, and it is always enjoyable to see Jackie Chan branch out a bit and show his acting ability (though, this was not the best of his movies for that.) I have to say that, even though I have my own copy of this movie and have watched it and enjoyed it several times, I am never able to suspend my disbelief. I am always bothered by the disparity in the ages of Jackie Chan and his leading teenager! I will be glad when Jackie Chan stops playing 20-somethings and moves entirely into his true age group with roles that allow him to show off his acting range (which is actually quite impressive.) The man is a good actor, and he can sing! As he matures and his impressive martial arts and acrobatic abilities inevitably change, I would like to see him develop and share his other abilities.
Average Jackie Film at Best.......2006-03-07
I say this because Jackie doesn't usually do wired Kung-Fu and this movie utilized that. It also utilized the sped up frame rate to make the fighters appear more skilled. Now that being said, the martial artists really are quite skilled. They really are pretty quick. They really can do most of those moves. It had some OK though special effects assisted fights, but this movie wasn't really about that. Jackie Chan was trying to break into "real" acting in this movie. I wouldn't buy it if you are trying to watch him fight, and if you buy it for the story....well that's your choice I guess.

I wish the complete full seasons were released rather than the Best of editions but this one is still worth checking out. The other reviewer pointed out the matches to you, but there are some extra features that you might enjoy like clips from the GLOW Games of Summer which was hosted by David McLane and Susie Spirit (sporting a cast after breaking her elbow...really wish they'd show us that match again!). If you recall thats when the first season gals competed against each other in the pizza eating contest, the escalator races, the tug of war, arm wrestling, etc... Another feature is the full length music video of the Bad Girls performing "Nasty and Mean". However, I was disappointed that they only showed a few seconds of the Good Girls music video "Good Girls Don't". What were the dvd producers thinking not including a full segment of the GLOW girls wearing bikinis at the Riviera Hotel poolside?!?! There is also a small compilation of Chainsaw and Spike's greatest moments in the wrestling ring. To the dvd producers, give us the complete full season box sets!

This DVD was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Finally a GLOW release on some of the girls I remember as a kid! I had never seen seasons 1&2 growing up so when I bought the earlier shows I was disapointed! It seemed like a completly differn't show then what I had remembered! If you are a season 3&4 year fan this DVD is for you! You can't complain about something that has not been altered in anyway! What you saw as a kid is what you get on this one! I would have given it 10 stars! Way to go Babe/Ursula you are the living Barbie Doll I remember! Thanks and keep season 3&4 alive! FOREVER!

GLOWING DISAPPOINTMENT.......2007-03-16
I just received the GLOW: 20th Anniversary DVD in the mail today and I am VERY disappointed. I watched GLOW from seasons 1-4 and was thrilled when rumors started up sveral years ago about a new GLOW series. I think the fans deserved a better anniversary DVD than the one released. Basically it's a DVD of one episode from season 4, I think. Nothing new here. I thought an anniversary DVD would be packed with clips, interviews, etc. Unless you don't have copies of season 4 on VHS somewhere, don't order this. It's not worth it. Hopefully...GLOW will be released the way it should be in a season format (GLOW: Season 1 for $60.00 or whatever, featuring all episodes from each season). I know that fans would pay for them...especially seasons 1 & 2. What a truly nice and respectful way this idea would be to honor true GLOW fans. Please stop insulting our intelligence with low-rate DVDs of a show we once loved. Give us what we want...what we deserve!
It's a Huge Disappointment, Ursula.......2007-02-01
Ursula Hayden (who played Babe the Farmer's Daughter) has purchased the rights to the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling and is trying to revive the franchise. As a huge fan of the show, I thought this was good news. However, based on this DVD I'm not gonna hold out much hope for its return:
Dear Ursula (because I know she's going to be reading these reviews),
If you want to revive interest in GLOW, this isn't the way to do it. You don't start by lying to the small band of hardcore fans that kept interest in the show alive. This is not "The Very Best of Glow." You really ought to have called it "Some Random Episode from Season Four"! It is not two hours long. Even with the "bonus" matches in the "features" section it clocks in at under an hour. It shows a pretty blatant disregard for the fans, if you ask me.
And Season Four? I know that these were your years on the show, but these were the episodes that killed the series! Market shows from Seasons One and Two, focus on the wrestling, lose the campy comedy bits, and drop any episode with the annoying commentary from Motor Mouth Morgan. Do that and you'll be golden.
Thanks for listening,
A rabid GLOW fan (Ashley Cartier rules!!!)
GLOW Vol.1.......2006-12-23
Let's start by clearing up an error that this web site (and a few others) made. This DVD is not 2hours long as listed above. This is one episode of GLOW, which ran an hour long, and is about 45 minutes with the commercials taken out. Add in the two short bonus matches, and an advertisement for another wrestling video, and you have about an hour of footage.
I do think GLOW was very unique. The wrestling was decent, and the characters were pretty creative. The skits they did were kind of funny too. Some of these ladies were pretty hot. This is definetly something that any collecter of wrestling footage would like to have, but due to the short length of it, you would probably only want to get it if you can get it at a good deal.
I really think they should have put two episodes on here, though. Afterall, one of the main advatages to making DVD's these days, instead of VHS, is that you can fit more footage on it, without hurting the video quality. I'll probably get Vol.2 eventually, but only if I'm able to get it at a relatively low price.

A DELICIOUS DRAMA/MYSTERY.......2005-11-21
I had a jolly good ole time watching this presentation. `Dead Gorgeous" reminds me a lot of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. It has many plot twists and turns along with wonderfully recreating the depicted era (1940s) The movie has one very bright/sharp and conniving character that appears to be leading the seemly dem character astray with the dense character, of course, being a little smarter than she appears (or just damn lucky) and MOST OF ALL the presentation has lots of that so-called British "black humor". It's really a good show that kept this viewer on the edge of his seat while at the same time completely amused. I plan on watching this DVD many times. "Dead Gorgeous" is FAR superior to what usually is offered on the T.V. screen or (to me) what's in the movie houses.
If you want to have a pleasant evening of entertainment buy this DVD-you'll love it!
Plenty of twists and turns in Dead Gorgeous.......2005-06-20
We would not be a bit surprised if Dead Gorgeous had been directed by Alfred Hitchcock, which is a great tribute to director Sarah Harding. Twists and turns abound in this story of a murderous femme fatale, Antonia, played to the hilt by Helen McCrory, and her not so willing accomplice, Rose, skillfully acted by Fay Ripley.
Rose and her long lost friend Antonia are both in a pickle. Each has a husband she would prefer dead. Antonia has a plan to get rid of both of them and immediately disposes of Rose's husband in what appears to be an accident at the train station. Getting rid of Antonia's husband proves to be more difficult, yet the murderous Antonia has the skills and disposition worthy of Lady Macbeth. Her friend Rose is in over her head and does not know what to do about it. She appears to be no match for Antonia's determination and manipulative behavior. The action builds to a surprising and satisfying conclusion.
Dead Gorgeous is so much better than 80% of the movies turned out by Hollywood, yet it is unlikely that many people outside of Great Britain will have heard of it. I hope that this review will be seen by a few people who will then be persuaded to watch the film, which will delight and entertain them. Highly recommended.
Immensely Entertaining!.......2004-08-06
This movie had me until the very end. Excellent acting, humorous, and a surprise ending to boot.
Excellent Entertainment.......2004-08-02
Truly amusing and the surprises never stop coming. Loosely based on the old Hitchcock film 'Strangers on a Train', this film shows what a determined, if somewhat insane, woman can do.
excellent.......2004-02-29
Just great. I really liked how they stuck with the time period, rather than trying to modernize or overly idealize. Love the sense of humor. It was a nice change from soppy romantic love stories one usually sees. An good story, and not done to death and overblow. Just about perfect in fact. Love the ending.

boring masterbation.......2006-09-27
This was basically just 14 guys jacking off..but with no flavor or style of anything new. How can you get off by dry humping a blanket or your mattress?? And many of it just got over-played. I actually fell asleep while watching this. I woke up and I was on guy 14, but I thought that I was on guy 5?? That disturbs me because I spent a good deal amount of money on this movie. The guy on the cover was descent looking, but the hottest guy was number 1. He was really going to town in the woodshop. haha. But, don't bother buying...I fell asleep, and I'm sure you will too.
Decent but far from great..........2000-12-04
14 solos. Mildly attractive. Well built. Gets old and only mildly arousing. Their is better.
Interesting....Boring....Slow.......2000-12-02
This movie has some attractive men w/ great bodies. I found it to get old and they could have gotten a little bit more hardcore. Very little real "stuff". Decent but I've seen better.

"Featuring Johan Paulik! In You're Gorgeous, we find 14 of the best European guys playing around, enjoying themselves in the hottest, most erotic solo scenes ever filmed! It includes sensual and even more beautiful new footage than seen before on a video cast by Bel Ami. There can be no doubt about it, Bel Ami's reputation for casting the best looking young men for our videos remains unsurpassed. Scouring his home country of Slovakia and neighboring Hungary and Czechoslovakia, he finds amazing talent such as world famous beauties Stephan Anderson and the spectacular Johan Paulik." - From Pride Video
"Fourteen all-too-brief vignettes starring smooth, slender, virtually hairless studs pups. An erotic video nonetheless for its dreamy images, atmospheric lighting and other top-of-the-line tech credits. Considering Paulik gets top billing, his scene could have lasted longer. One ill-timed sneeze and you'll miss it." --AVN Feb. 98

Comparing The DVD To The Previous VHS Release.......2005-05-05

--------------------------------------------------
This DVD was previously released on VHS in 1986.
There are two minor portions at the start and end of the program from the original VHS that were edited out of the DVD. (1) Seven seconds of music on a black screen before the first visual. It's the first seven seconds of the song that's already playing as the show on the DVD begins. (2) The INI logo at the very end.
Except for these two minor portions, nothing else was edited out. The F word was used twice and racial slurs were used once (all left intact from the original VHS release).
There are two minor defects that weren't in the VHS: At 21.59 is a slight defect that is not in the original videotape. Also, at 56.16 is a minor edit that is not in the original video tape. During the end credits Tina Ferrari interview, about 21 frames (less than a second) is cut. It sounds like it was done because the audio on the master they used to make the DVD was bad at that spot. Tina's complete line is: "I like a man... that you can have a little control over." The "..." represents a one second pause in her words.
By the way, all three GLOW DVDs contain the same slideshow and promo bonus features.
Fond Childhood memories . . . .......2004-08-31
I can remember staying up very late on Saturday nights over a friend's house so that at some ungodly hour, on some channel I'm not even sure of today, G.L.O.W. would come on and we would be mesmerized! I don't think most people today would "get it" and you either love it or hate it. Watching this disk made me want to call my old grade school friend and invite him over for another round! On a side note the DVD and video are identical so the other review by D. Hoyt is relevant to this DVD release.
women wrestling at its "worst" BUT entertaining!.......2004-01-05
The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling is probably forgotten for the most part unfortunately but if you love the 80s, like women's wrestling and enjoy the comedic aspects of the sport of wrestling then you'll probably enjoy this. I don't have the dvd, but I have the video cassette so this review is based on that. This episode is the series premiere of GLOW back in 1985 (or 86) which always took place at the Riviera hotel in Las Vegas. The MATCHES: 1) Americana and California Doll (a different girl, not the points to ponder one) versus Royal Hawaiian and Spanish Red (2) Salt & Pepper versus Sara & Mabel (3) Hollywood (woohoo! my fav!) & Vine versus Tina & Ashley (Tina is now known as Ivory from the WWE by the way) and match 4 is for the GLOW crown (their championship) Matilda the Hun (aka Queen Kong) vs Tammy Jones. If the dvd is the same as the video tape, then this will be WITHOUT the comedy skits and mini rap sessions that the Glow girls were famous for. The first segment on the tape opens with clips from the various matches on the video while Patti Labelle's "new attitude" plays. There's also another segment with this song playing and it follows with an introduction to the glow girls. There's also a couple other musical numbers with Tammy Jones and Matilda the Hun accompanied with Hollywood & Vine. IF you followed wrestling in the 80s then you know that the wrestling was...well, not at its best! There were some good matches every now and then, but I just found the show entertaining. The girls always looked like they were having a great time and they were very different than any other wrestling program. For this first show specifically, I think they tried to be more serious and it was targeted to an adult audience. Even their interview sessions had a few "f" words thrown in UNCENSORED (unlike the show that aired on tv) so just a warning to you parents out there. This version of the episode is also no the same televised version. There were segments shown on television that aren't shown here for some reason like Americana and Spanish Red fighting all the way to the parking lot. I'm not sure what else isn't shown, but that's just one thing I noticed. There's not much to say about the show. You either liked it or you didn't. After seeing what women can do on WWE nowadays, I suggest getting this just for nostalgic purposes because you're not going to find the "tough" action. But you will find alot of colorful characters full and GORGEOUS women!

Good tips!.......2004-02-07
I bought this dvd to show to my girls so they could learn how to apply makeup after seeing one of my daughters walk out of the bathroom one day with eyeshadow above her eyebrows. It was a great buy and we learned a lot from the dvd. Catherine Hickman keeps it really simple and uses the same technique over and over so you can see what you should do. My girls loved it and so did I. We were inspired to get on to Catherine Hickman's website, www.catcosmetics.com, and order some of her products. The products were excellent quality and beautiful colors and we are going to buy more. She had so many great makeup tips and we felt we could use all the information in the dvd. She really taught us how to wear makeup without looking like we have a mask on. She had a great tip for me, the mom on the go who has no time to apply makeup, and now I am able to pull myself together and look pretty even though I have no time. She was practical and told us that we could get away with buying cheap makeup but to splurge on good brushes- the key being to blend the makeup so it looks natural. My favorite part of the video is the introduction when she walks up to the camera and she has no makeup on! Kudos to her for being honest and making glamor accessable to the average Jane.
