Film fans might someday recognize 1997 and '98 as the years Hong Kong came to Hollywood. Stars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Chow Yun-Fat, Jet Li, and Michelle Yeoh all appeared in major Hollywood projects and directors John Woo, Ronny Yu, and Tsui Hark directed Face/Off, Bride of Chucky, and Knock Off, respectively. Another entry into this new era of entertainment is The Big Hit, directed by Che-Kirk Wong (who also directed Jackie Chan in Crime Story), executive produced by John Woo, and produced by Wesley Snipes. Mark Wahlberg leads this all-American cast in a played-for-laughs macho blowout. Rounding out the testosterone brigade are Lou Diamond Phillips (sprouting a gold-capped tooth and a dirty mouth), Bokeem Woodbine (who, according to this DVD's director audio track, wore extra socks where it counts), Antonio Sabàto Jr., and Avery Brooks. Wahlberg plays Melvin Smiley, a nice-guy hit man with an ulcer and a severe insecurity problem. He's short on cash due to the spending habits of his unsuspecting fiancée Pam (Christina Applegate) and his girlfriend-on-the-sly Chantel (Lela Rochon). He and his crew decide to do a little freelancing and cook up their own heist to make a little mo' money--specifically by kidnapping Keiko (China Chow), the daughter of a Japanese businessman whom they target for ransom. Little do they know her dad is broke and she's the goddaughter of their boss. The Big Hit has action scenes aplenty (one of the stunt coordinators worked on Woo's The Killer and Bullet in the Head) and the same cornball sense of humor as other films in the Hong Kong action genre. Slick pacing and over-the-top humor made this movie a miss with the critics but a fun ride for fans of Hong Kong-styled action. --Shannon Gee

Customer Reviews:
An average action flick that you can't help but to laugh.......2007-06-07
This is a ridiculous movie, which is why I liked it so much. It is a very stylish movie with the action scenes having lots of crazy jumps, flips, and explosions. In here we have Mel, played by Mark Wahlberg, who is a hit man who works as part of a crew for Paris. However he has money problems and stress that gives him a constant upset stomach. His main stress comes from his two women. His fiancé has arranged for her disapproving parents to come to stay with them for the weekend, while his girlfriend Chantel is determined to get every penny she can out of him. When Cisco offers him a job outside of Paris's contracts he takes it and kidnaps Keiko, the daughter of a rich industrialist who also happens to be Paris's goddaughter. Betrayed by Cisco, Mel finds himself with the hostage but also targeted by plenty of firepower.
I've seen this couple of times and fine it worthwhile. The plot is silly but could have worked, however the action scenes don't really have any character and are best described as functional rather than special. The director has chosen to give the film a constant energy and pace rather than work on giving the film it's own character or style. Some of the scenes hint at what could have worked in the script. Quiet scenes between Mel and Keiko show a character that should have been worked into the action better. Instead these are rare and make way for meaningless, overblown action sequences which also, surprisingly for Wong, lack a sense of character or excitement. The effects aren't as good as you'd hope and several blue screen bits are poor.
Wahlberg is likeable in a goofy innocent role as Mel. He does well with the action as well as the insecure character. Phillips is either bad or brilliant depending on your feelings about what his role needed. He hams it up so much that at times he's hard to take but he compliments the absurd vein of comedy running through the narrative. Woodbine is wasted despite an amusing running gag about his discovery of [...]. The biggest waste for me was Lela Rochon. In `Knock Off' she proved that she is talented and sexy enough to rise above a bad film, here she hardly has any screen time - another example of wasted talent.
However this is disposal more than anything else. It has enough pace and energy to fool you into being entertained and in fairness the time does pass quite easily. My only complaint is that the film's style goes overboard towards the end of the movie, watch it and you'll see what I mean. Overall this is an average action movie who's weaknesses outweigh any strengths it may have had at the time of writing the original script.
Hot Hitman.......2007-02-01
This was really the first movie that you got to see Mark be a leading man. He really showed that he could carry a movie not only the action end of it but he showed that he can add humor to it as well.
I've seen all but 3 of his movies and i can seriously say that this is one of his BEST films!!!
My top 3 Mark movies would be:
1) The Big Hit
2) The Italian Job (he does some really hot driving in that movie)
3) Fear (he might play a creepy character, but he shows a lot of range with his acting in it)
The Big Hit a Big Laugh!.......2007-01-12
I loved this movie the first time I watched it some years back and promised myself I'd see it again because apparently it was the LAST time I ever saw it on broadcast television, it was so long ago I can't even remember what channel broadcast it was; but I saw it and thought to myself "I love this movie." And always have up till the day I got it because now I can watch it over, and over, and over again and it still cracks me up everytime. With that aside and Mark Wahlberg being one of my most favorite male actors-- this movie was topnotch in the very element it was supposed to be, a hard-hitting action movie with some right down comedy. It's not a movie to be taken seriously, but not a movie to let you down either of its mockery-- top notch acting and reasons why Mark Wahlberg, as an action star actor can do comedy, unlike Densel Washington who's even asked Jay Leno on his show why he couldn't do comedy, the response was because Densel was just too serious to be taken lightly. Here though, whether this wasn't a role Mark fit ideally to some peeople's benefit of his other marks; I still think it was one hell of a role for him that he did EXTREMELY well as the soft-spoken hitmen who could do everything right but has the incredible turn of luck to always get the crap end of the stick at times.
Good movie.
Good laughs.
Good times.
Even my fiancee enjoyed it and she'd never seen the movie up till I showed her some days ago! Good quality movie worth its time and laughter appeal.
One of my top 10 films.......2006-08-21
Every person that has reviewed this movie so far is an idiot.
This movie is the funniest thing I have ever seen. Plus it has Christina Applegate in it. And Sisko (Avery Brooks) from Deep Space Nine. What more could you want.
Moments that I still laugh about years after first seeing it are;
1. Lou Diamond Phillips when the phone rings. The use of slow motion is perfect.
2. Avery Brooks laying down the law to Lou Diamond Phillips when suddenly his phone rings at the worst moment. "Give Me That..."
3. Elliott Gould's speech at the dinner table.
I needed a gut transplant from laughing when this film was finished. A must see if you are still brave enough to smile in front of your feinds - unlike the idiot credit card shopping yuppies reviewing this film on here.
:0).......2006-06-18
I think Mark Wahlberg can have that little tiny comedic side to him love the cast, the action, the plot and the movie will add to collection

Lovely.......2007-02-08
Love the stories on this DVD. Angelina is a sweet, soothing show that is good for calming and entertaining little ones at the end of the day. My 2-year-old twins enjoy seeing Angelina dance. I like hearing the British accents as well.
Angelina Ballerina.......2007-01-13
My grandaughter who is 3 1/2 loves Angelina. She likes to play with her Angelina doll while watching the video. Cute and age appropriate video.
sweet, quiet video.......2006-03-03
My 3- and 2-yr-old absolutely LOVE Angelina Ballerina, so I wanted to get a few of her DVDs since it doesn't come on PBS very often. They adore this video, and they'll sit and watch it over and over--although I try to limit that b/c it only has four episodes on it, and I don't want them to get tired of it. It's also not over-stimulating, so it's a great way to wind down before naps or bed.
I think other reviewers have complained about having to watch commercials to get to the episodes, but I just hit the skip forward button on my DVD player, and it passes right over them--even the FBI warnings, which is very unusual.
No complaints here! And it's a great way to start talking about social interactions and siblings. The episode about Angelina's new baby sister is a special favorite, especially since we have two sisters very close in age. I think it never occurred to them that it was OK to be frustrated with having a sister before!

Take a Ride in a Brand New Wiggly Way.......2007-06-13
For the first time ever, the Wiggles have more than just the Big Red Car... they also have a Big Red Boat. This time, Anthony is doing the driving instead of Greg-only in one of the bonus features' storybook.
I'm getting used to singing some of the old songs in english while the animated Mariachi Wiggles sang them in spanish. There's a special Wigglehouse scene that I know very well from Playhouse Disney.
Disappointed with 1st Wiggles Purchase.......2007-02-24
We don't have cable, so my daughter isn't exposed to the Wiggles on TV. She has been enamored with previews of other wiggles videos, and I actually enjoyed them myself.
This video seems like a random selection, and I was very disappointed in the lack of choreography on the part of the wiggles themselves. The educational value was also disappointing, as I expected more from someone who majored in education in college. Learning can be fun, I'm just not sure how much my daughter will actually learn from this series of random songs.
We have watched the first 20 minutes of this, and that's about all I could take. My sister in law warned me, suggested I choose Little Einsteins or Blue's Clues... I should have listened to her.
My 16 month old daughter does seem to enjoy the video, so I will probably let her watch it while I'm in the shower and she is in her pack and play.
Perhaps I am being overly critical, as a first time Mom. I am not sure whether I should be glad or worried that my daughter actually seems to like it.
Same Old Songs.......2006-08-26
I agree with the other two reviewers that the Wiggles really need some fresh material! This is completely recycled songs just sung in front of a different set. And yes, there are 3 or 4 songs sung in spanish that my kids were completely disinterested in. We love the Wiggles, have seen them in concert twice and have a lot of their DVD's. But, this one really bores.
Please guys, get us some new stuff!
Not the best, but still entertaining..........2006-08-18
This one isn't our favorite, but still worth buying for a devoted Wiggles fan.
Kept Attention.......2006-08-02
I have been pleased with the Big Red Boat DVD. It is a normal, silly Wiggles video...nothing really different than their recent stuff. There are a couple of new songs though. Being that most of the Wiggles videos are also the same segments used in their Disney show, it was nice to see something a little different than what my kids can watch every day. My oldest son (2 1/2) asked to watch the DVD quite a bit when we first got it.
Just an FYI, it is a really long video...about 50 minutes or so. Since it was so long, I felt like I got my money's worth.

This is a good parody of mob/hit films. Four hit men kidnap a college girl without their boss knowing about it. It reminds me a bit of The Whole Nine Yards but it is not as good. It is funny at times and the cast seem to enjoy themselves.

Bob's friend and co-worker, Wendy, is the star of the show in this installment of Nick Jr's popular animated program for preschoolers. The 45-minute feature includes four stories plus an additional four mini-adventures. The plucky blonde supervises the resurfacing of a road when Bob falls ill in "Wendy's Busy Day," saves the day when he bungles a painting job in "Wallpaper Wendy," oversees the construction of a soccer field in "Wendy's Big Game," and fixes a tennis court after Spud the scarecrow falls into wet cement in "Wendy's Tennis Match." In each story, Wendy and Bob are joined by their building machines--Dizzy the cement mixer, Lofty the crane, Muck the bulldozer, etc.--who contribute something unique to each project. Even when things go wrong, the colorful, industrious characters treat each other with respect, work together to resolve conflicts, and take time out to have a little fun after each job. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Game time is hours away, but Bob the Builder and his friends are ready to play! As Wendy and the machines are prepping the soccer field for the big game, Spud sends the line-marking machine running amok. Can everyone fix the line before the game? Yes, they can! Then, it's almost time for tennis when the merry builders put the finishing touches on the tennis court. Unfortunately, Spud falls flat into the gooey green asphalt that Dizzy has just poured! Never fear. This team is unstoppable! And not even Spud can keep the builders down Ready! Set! Work!

BOB THE BUILDER.......2006-01-17
I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF ADVERTISING ON THE DVD!! TARGETTING 2 YR.OLDS IS BEYOND LIMITS, I FEEL!!
Very well done!.......2005-07-22
I think this is one of the best Bob the Builder videos we have. It's pretty funny seeing how Wendy has to come to Bob's rescue when he tries to hang wallpaper. I suppose the best part of this video is that even though Wendy is a girl, she can fix things too which I think gives confidence to girls to "try" something that just might be out of the ordinary for a girl. As the daughter of a Mr. Fixit, I have learned and used many of the things I was taught as a youngster and Wendy makes it appear to be just "normal" for girls to do these things and not weird. Life puts you in different situations and sometimes the "Barbie Princess" needs to remove her crown and pick up a toolbelt, if you know what I mean! Wendy is just as comfortable fixing cement and painting a soccer field as she is in organizing the construction office. Very well done and I highly recommend this one!
sports themes, very positive roles for wendy too........2004-01-16
Some of the original British only Bob the Builders had rather restrictive roles for Wendy, very stereotyped into helpless female etc. These episodes are fantastic on two levels -- Except for the wallpaper Wendy, they all feature ball games, soccer, tennis, mini golf etc. Very appealing for any little boy. AND, as a stay at home mom, who does all of the fixing around our house, I like that Wendy takes over very capably when Bob is sick, and acts like an equal partner, rather than just being a secretary sitting in the office and taking phone calls.
great addition to your Bob the builder collection.......2003-03-20
This one has largely positive stories with Wendy solving problems and in charge while Bob is sick/busy etc. The stories that involve fixing a tennis court, soccer field, etc are a great deal of fun for my 2 1/2 year old son. Very sweet, and nice to see Wendy as a capable and equal partner in Bob's business.
Can he fix it? Of course he can!.......2002-06-09
My 5 year old loves Bob and his crew. This movie is a big hit at our house. I even like it, and with some preschool videos, that just doesn't happen. But Bob and Wendy seem to bring out the best values. My son loves putting on his hardhat and playing Bob with his sisters. This video emphasizes helping each other. My kids are also soccer fans, so this was a big plus too. If you've got a small kid hooked on videos, I can really recommend this video or any from this series.

Get up and Dance!!!.......2007-01-15
My toddler loves the dances and songs on this DVD! The whole family gets up and dances along with the songs. An unusual form of aerobics, but hey try it!! There aren't any kids in the dvd but my daughter doesn't seem to mind. The DVD is really long so we break up watching it into about 2 to 3 sittings, so for us this item is a real bargain!
inferior.......2006-12-03
These songs and skits lack the energy and artistry of the TV show and some of the other DVDs. If you are looking for something different from the TV show, but still want your little one to be entertained try Wiggly Safari or Big Red Boat instead.
Disappointed.......2006-11-30
We used to have all the Wiggles for the kids several years ago so when I ordered this I assumed it would be the same quality. It isn't and I wish I'd read the reviews here first but I didn't think of it. A mistake I'll never make again. The little boy I got it for doesn't seem to mind though so if you haven't seen better I guess it doesn't matter.
nothing special.......2006-10-11
We have four wonderful Wiggles DVDs (we even like the puppets on Yummy Yummy). I borrowed Big Red Car from the library today and it will be going back tomorrow. I once owned Sailing Around the World, but do not have it anymore. Let's just say I did not give it away to anyone else. At least half of the Big Red Car feature is composed of songs and skits by the Captain and his crew, very much like SATW, and those segments are just irritating. This gets 2 stars only because the first few songs actually feature the guys themselves with many songs we don't have already on our other DVDs. I will not rent, borrow, or buy this DVD again.
The Wiggles Here comes the Big red Car.......2006-08-17
I was very disappointed with this DVD, the songs were the same. But, I HATED that fact that they didn't have any children dancing to the songs as they sange. They have the Wiggle dancers (Leeanne, and the rest of the adults). We enjoy the Wiggles, but we enjoy watching the children dance and perform when they sing. I was very disappointed. My favorite Wiggle DVD is the Live Concert one. We watch that one all the time. Check the Wiggles website, they are having more concerts for 2006.

Description
"Arthur's Big Hit"
Is it ever okay to hit someone? Sometimes you just get so mad, you wanna.... pow! Right?? Arthur experiences considerable confusion, and finally clarity, as he finds himself on both ends of the hitting question.
"Bully for Binky"
Is Binky Barnes really the most disgusting, nasty, horrible person on the planet, or is he just misunderstood? When someone--a girl, no less--dares to stand up to Binky, he gets a taste of his own medicine and discovers just how good it is to have friends.
"Arthur, World's Greatest Gleeper"
OK, Arthur didn't mean to tell a lie, he just got stuck in a sort of fib, because he thought it was cool to be a Gleeper. (Too late, he finds out that gleeping means stealing...!) But when put to the test, Arthur has to admit that not only isn't he the world's greatest gleeper, he's not a gleeper at all.

Bob builds, teaches, and saves the planet.......2007-02-01
Not being a regular watcher/fan of Bob the Builder movies, I was not aware of the changed character voices. I first viewed the movie with my five-year-old nephew who is a Bob fan, and he did not notice the differences. We both enjoyed the movie and the lesson. It is a great first learning tool for children to understand about the environment and how they too are able to contribute to the preservation. I have since shown the movie to a group of 3-7 year olds in the community to teach about recycling. The showing was well attended and received. Each child walked away reciting the movie's mantra "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." I recommend the whole family watching this film together. The teenagers might role their eyes at some of the antics, but they too will find themselves remembering the 3 Rs. I apologize in advance for you not being able to sleep due to Lofty, Scoop, and the Gang's chants of "Yes, We Can!"
Sends excellent message to children.......2005-10-13
At first the new voice was "weird" but my almost 4 year old son did not skip a beat! He LOVES the new characters Benny and Scrambler. He never mentioned the new voices. I have read some of the other reviews and say so what if Bob now sends the message to Renue, Reuse and Recycle...my son thinks it is cool. Is there anything wrong with teaching a little conservation? I also like that Lofty now says I think so in a more up beat way....overall I think the characters are more up beat and Bob does not make fun of his father anymore...he actually shows more respect for the way or the reason his father is doing things unlike in previouse shows where he got VERY impatient with his Dad. My son loves to watch the progress of Bob building in Sunflower Valley and loves Farmer Pickles new straw house.
If your child is a Bob the builder fan he will LOVE this new DVD and the new show over all.
Whose Bob is it anyway?.......2005-10-09
Alright, perhaps I am an overly protective mother, but when I heard there would be a new Bob movie I became both excited and cautious.
Bob the Builder was originally a British construct, from my information. My cousin in London sent me a CD of some great modern pop songs addapted to the theme. My fav? Mambo number 5...
Having seen only the first episode of the new series (and not as yet the movie) I squinted at the screen (having forgotten my glasses in the shower) in utter frustration trying to place 'that' voice. My four year old son had fallen back to sleep, only to stir at my yell across the house to my husband, "Hey, it's that guy from Who's line".
To either my utter joy or shame, Whose Line is it Anyway happens to be one of my son's favorite shows. Next time you're stuck in line at the post office try playing 'Props' with the express envelopes. My son has yet to notice, still sleeping as he is, but he is sure to and it'll either be the coolest thing ever or a 'Mommie, why does Bob sound more like Wendy" moment. Either way, we'll weather the storm...much like when Joe started house sitting Blue when Steve went off to College. But at least that transition episode we didn't have to pay for. And does anybody know what happend to Steve Burns anyway?
Too much change in new series!.......2005-09-18
We just could not get over the drastic changes in the voices. Bob, Spud, Lofty, & Mr. Bentley all had different voices than the original series and movies. Bob & Spud were especially difficult to listen to. This movie did not hold my children's attention the way the other Bob the Builder movies have. I'm sure it's because of the voices. The environmental message was a bit overdone, but we could even tolerate that if the voices weren't so different! I would NOT rebuy this movie knowing what I know now. We should have borrowed it from the library instead.
Bob Can Do it! .......2005-09-14
I and my family love Bob we realise that as he gets older he changes just like the children who watch him. The change in character voice was noticed but nobody cared, we still loved it. However, the subject matter - AWSOME. Finally, an enjoyable project of some real building (rather than filling a hole in the road or putting a new roof on a barn), this time it's a new town.
This grand scheme of things is made truly essential viewing, by it's environmental soundness. It seems to me that since we adults are a lost cause (the phrase, "I'll be dead before anything happens so why should I worry," springs to mind). This project sets a standard of living we should all be aspiring to. It's a sound, funny, educational and dare I say it "thought provoking" chapter for Bob. He's always been a fine bloke but now he's really proved he cares about the future and using his what he does best (Building!!) to do a great job.
A word of warning, if your household lives like there is no tomorrow (i.e. wasting energy and materials) obviously for a number good reasons...... Allowing your kids to watch this could result in some very embarrassing questions. We're in the process of getting a solar panel and went for a picnic to a wind farm.
