"Because it is there" is the reason so many men and women have risked death to climb Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on earth. NOVA follows a scientific investigation of high-altitude physiology in Everest: The Death Zone, which examines the biological and psychological changes experienced by a group of climbers during their ascent. Jodie Foster's narration accompanies the team as the NOVA photographers capture the stark, alien beauty of the mountain; the drama reaches a crescendo on the descent as it becomes unclear whether or not an ill climber will make it. Well worth watching by anyone interested in mountain climbing or the limits of human endurance, Everest: The Death Zone is at once cautionary and inspiring. --Rob Lightner

Description

Get ready for a (literally) breathtaking trek up Mt. Everest, from Base Camp at 17,600 feet; through the chilling, corpse-strewn Death Zone; to the very pinnacle of the the Earth, five and a half miles above sea level. For those brave souls who survive the harrowing climb to the top of the world, it is a transformative experience. But can the excruciating ascent—through frigid cold, blasting wind, blinding sun, and severe lack of oxygen—cause permanent, damaging changes to the human brain and body?

In the wake of the 1996 disaster that took eight climbers in a single day, scientists follow a team of hikers to measure, for the first time ever, the toll high-altitude climbing takes on the heart, lungs, blood, and brain. Why do seemingly rational people make poor, sometimes fatal decisions as they approach the peak? And the danger doesn't end there—as NOVA discovers during the descent, when one climber's respiratory illness takes a terrifying turn on the isolated mountainside. ''Even with the best technology, the best training,'' says team member, producer and director David Breashears, ''you can still end up frozen to death at 27,500 feet. That's what makes Everest Everest.''

Special DVD features include: scene selections; access to the Everest: The Death Zone Web site; and English subtitles.

On one DVD5 disc. Region coding: All regions. Audio: Dolby stereo. Screen format: 4 x 3 full frame.

4 out of 5 stars Just ok.......2007-02-13

I guess I am jaded because I watched the IMAX Everest video (which seems to get the best reviews) first and can't help but compare them. Still this video had some good participants i.e. Ed Viestur's and such. Interesting view point but the testing didn't do much for me but provide information. Would have liked more extra's on dvd to. All in all ok.

5 out of 5 stars NOVA - Everest: The Death Zone.......2007-02-01

Excellent DVD on Everest! Have read a lot of books on the Himalayan Mountains (especially Mt. Everest) and this gives you a beautiful view of the area and what it is like to climb in the Death Zone. A DVD you can watch many times!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the Imax film.......2006-07-01

David Breashears was the director of photography on both this film and the Imax film made the year before. In my opinion, this film was more successful, at least as viewed on VHS on a medium-size old tv. That's probably because the equipment for Imax was so bulky and the filming process so cumbersome that just taking the footage was an accomplishment.

On this video, the purpose of the expedition was to study the effects of altitude on the human body, so it really focused in on the human aspect. As Breashears explains in his book High Exposure, the massive film size in Imax films requires that you not pull in close to a human face, because it will not make a good image when projected on a 7-story screen.

So in terms of home viewing, I really enjoyed this video and thought it helped me visualize the things I have read about so many times. The Khumbu Icefall and the treacherous ladders, the Hillary Step, the summit itself--I could truly feel that I was there. The images were crystal clear and very beautiful.

If I were only going to watch one video to help me get a picture of what a Himilayan expedition looks and feels like, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Your head is in the jet stream.......2005-01-11

This documentary is really wonderful. But not wonderful for the glory of the conquest but showing just how deadly and treacherous this climb really is. Whether you are a wealthy wannabe or an experienced mountain climber it is beyond my conprehension why any sane person would want to endanger his or her life like that. Where's the glory in being drug up to the top like a sack of potatoes? It's almost sinful to play with your life in this way when there is no earthly reason to be there.

The camera work is breathtaking. But it was painful to watch those climbers virtually dying in front of our eyes. This NOVA is a real eye opener for respecting the one life you have been given.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not really quite what I expected.......2004-01-29

I have 7 Everest DVD's and this one was not really as I expected. It was more clinical and of medical type interest and did not have to be Mount Everest to show the effects of low oxygen. They could have used any place above or around 8,000 meters. Frustrating in some senses because I felt a lack of Everest footage and views about the Death Zone etc., as well as being a fairly short film, sort of left me feeling wanting and slighty cheated. However, it goes fairly well with the collection since some of the other DVD's fil in the gaps.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good drama with a pat ending.......2005-04-24

"Oxygen" is a crime drama starring Maura Tierney (of NBC's "NewsRadio") as a cop with a troubled personal life investigating a kidnapping. Adrien Brody plays the kidnapper three years before he burst forth as "The Pianist".

The plot follows Tierney's flawed personal decision-making processes and her involvement with the kidnapping investigation, where she forms a bizarre bond with the criminal played by Brody.

This is a cliche-ridden but absorbing crime drama featuring the two charismatic leads and a host of faces familiar from other movies. Brody's psychological portrait of the bad guy is probably the signature characterization in the film although most men (this is a "guy" movie, after all) will be riveted to Tierney, whose one dimensional role is simultaneously pathetic, sexy, vulnerable, and attractive.

There is one wonderful scene very early in the flick -- that is stylistically ripped off from "The French Connection" -- where the female lead chases a bad guy under a train in live camera action. Don't miss this good early feature!

This movie entertained me all the way through until that silly contrived ending, where a bunch of things happen that are so incredible as to be just plain dumb. Check out Brody in "Love The Hard Way", another movie he made where he plays a less than flavorful character.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Psychotic Thriller - Awesome Movie.......2005-01-12

This movie isn't your normal psychotic thriller type movie. This is a spectacular film starring The Pianist star Adrien Brody. I would highly recommend this film to anybody who appreciates a "Good Movie". With a low price and high quality, you can't go wrong!

4 out of 5 stars Wish it was a book!.......2004-11-19

Your typical serial killer flick. If you enjoy serial killers you will enjoy this movie. The movie is average, but the serial killer is a bit like Houdini. He escapes by odd and creepy methods. He will surprise you. This killer also likes to play vebal head games with cops. Particularly Maura Tierney. Her character really interested me. A woman cop married to the chief. She has an alcahol problem as well as some sexual issues and self injury secrets. The movie was good, but I would love to read the novel for more depth of the characters.

5 out of 5 stars TAKE A DEEP BREATH.......2004-09-01

OXYGEN is a subtly breathtaking thriller that derives its cinematic tension from the performances and the very idea of the horrible act the psychotic perpetrates, with no remorse or conscience.
Adrien Brody (pre PIANIST) gives a dynamic, controlled and skin-crawling performance as "Harry Houdini" who has kidnapped the wife of a wealthy businessman, buried her alive, and asking for a million dollars to tell where he's buried her.
Maura Giveney is superb as the alcoholic detective, who is married to her boss (Terry Kinney). Whether this kind of nepotism is realistic is not important, as their relationship is very human and very real.
Tierney makes the mistake of facing Brody in the interrogation room, where he manages to take the upper hand in picking away at her weaknesses.
Laila Robins as the burial victim offers a strong, gutwrenching performance as a woman pleading for her life, yet remaining as strong as the situation allows.
There's measured suspense in wondering if Brody will ever tell anyone where Robins is; he's a master of smart-talk, cool control and out and out disgusting. An Oscar nomination would have been appropriate, had the movie had a better release.
A tense, disturbing little thriller with an unusual ending.

4 out of 5 stars COMPELLING PSYCHODRAMA MAKES FOR AN ENGAGING THRILLER.......2004-06-05

I of course expected little from this small budget movie with unknown actors (including Brody, at that pre-Pianist time). Given these parameters, this is a very engaging thriller.

Very effectively creepy. The psycopath theme is occasionally so disturbing that it's hard to watch in places. But what frightens even more is the horrifying glimpse we get into the mind of a killer.

Brody offers us a frighteningly friendly and calm, hypnotically conniving psychopath, and Maura Tierney is very credible as a woman so self-destructive and full of self-hatred that in one disquieting scene she can barely look at herself in a mirror.

Definitely worth seeking out.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible movie....but entertaining commentary.......2005-01-05

Wow, watching this movie alone on a Saturday night was torture. This is almost an unwatchable, cheap low budget action flick with plot holes abound. The film begins like a average cop thriller with a crackdown and Ice-T sporting a lame car chase sequence. But then the film takes an odd turn and goes to outerspace Russian space sation and Ice-T is hardly in the rest of the film. They seemed to only have time to actually film 3/4 of a movie and padded the rest with stock footage from NASA and the Navy. When the film was over, I couldn't believe I a actually sat through it. While I was sitting there I was checking out the special features and low-and-behold it had a feature length commentary by the director and producer. I had to watch the film again to see what these numbskulls had to say about the abomination. To my surprise the commentary was very entertaining and very well done. The guys seemed to have a lot of humor and gave a really professional and entertaining commentary. Too bad the film came out so horrendously bad.

3 out of 5 stars another entertaining Fred Olen Ray joint.......2004-09-15

I was initially attracted to the films of director Fred Olen Ray due to the casting of Fred "The Hammer" Williamson in his movie ACTIVE STEALTH. I soon realized the Fred Olen Ray doesn't only have the savvy to utilize a legendary actor like "The Hammer," but Ray is a fine filmmaker in his own right. Ray's movies (especially with a director's commentary track on the DVD) are very entertaining... don't expect the big-budget fireworks of ARMAGEDDON, SPACE COWBOYS, or INDEPENDENCE DAY, but prepare yourself for a fun 90 minutes anyway.

BLACK HORIZON concerns a rescue effort in space. The Russian space station AVMA is in trouble. A team of astronauts, including Michael Dudikoff and retired Navy diver (?!) Hannes Jaenicke, visit the space station on the rescue mission. Meanwhile, the reentry codes have been stolen or changed by some opportunistic Russian. Here on Earth, Ice T pursues the Russian scoundrel to get the reentry codes.

The acting is spotty. I thought Dudikoff's acting was convincing and edgy. The female lead, Yvette Nipar, was very good. The rest of the acting varied from fair to poor. Usually Hannes Jaenicke does a better job.

Essentially, BLACK HORIZON is a low-budget action movie. Sometimes the pace drags, and sometimes (like when during a meteor storm all hell is breaking loose aboard AVMA), it's quite exciting.

The inclusion of a Director's Commentary track from Fred Olen Ray was a must. Ray, as always, is a barrel of laughs. He talks about how various scenes were shot and what locations were used. He pulls the rabbit out of the hat--special effects are demystified and explained. It's a fascinating glimpse into the world of low-budget movies, and all aspiring filmmakers should experience some of his commentaries.

Also check out the DVDs for ACTIVE STEALTH and VENOMOUS, two other Ray-helmed flicks. Each is available with a commentary track.

    1 out of 5 stars ICE T SWEETENED.......2004-09-13

In the lower right hand corner of your screen you see "January 7, blah blah." However, later on in the movie, we see Christmas decorations up, people buying Christmas trees. Now how careful an editing job is that?
BLACK HORIZON is very dull and lifeless. The fx are cheesy; the cast is about as exciting as watching a toilet flush, and Ice T continues to get roles when he wouldn't know how to act if he were coached. Michael Dudikoff, Hannes Jaenicke and Larry Poindexter aren't even watchable. The fake Russian accents are atrocious..it's just not a very good movie.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Movie In All History of All Planets of All..........2004-05-21

I rented this because of Michael Dudikoff. I realize his career is on the skids, and he'll agree to any job, but this is just awful.

I cant count the number of times I saw stock footage. They stole a scene from "Space Camp" where the NASA computer was calculating the chances of thermal curtain failure. You can even seen Jinx in the reflection. I also saw the F16/F15 swap. And what about the Space Shuttle scenes where it's the Enterprise, the Columbia, and the Atlantis?

There was a budding romance that quickly ended in the vacuum of space right when it was getting interesting. They also blew up the shuttle in the fakest explosion I've ever scene. Looks like a sparkler. The same goes for when they blew up the station. And what about the artificial gravity? I might have believed it of the station (even though it wasnt rotating), but they had this space elevator that also had artificial gravity. It was just killing me. And this is a recent film!

Doctor Who was far better filmed. This movie now rates worse than "Clockwork Orange" and "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask". I demanded my money back when I took it back to Blockbuster, and they gave it to me. This movie should be reported to someone for copyright infringement. Space Camp was never listed amongst the credits.

1 out of 5 stars The Art of Black Horizon.......2004-04-09

This was one of the worst movies I've seen. I couldn't even watch it. In the opening scene, the footage where Ice T jumps out of the black truck on to the truck with pipes is the EXACT same footage from The Art of War. This movie is terrible, crap and should not have been made. If you spent money to buy it, you got reamed.

He shows a true love of travel and of the people he meets while recognizing the customs and beliefs of these countries. The Peru trip was inspiring and fun, leaving me with a desire to travel to Peru and Machu Picchu.

5 out of 5 stars For everyone who ever asks "what's Peruvian food"?.......2007-02-18

Great video. It showcases cuisine from all the regions in Peru and Anthony Bourdain teamed up with some great people in Peru to really go where the "tourist" path doesn't often take you (Gaston Acurio, one of Peru's best chefs if not the best). A true picture of some areas of Peru, purposefully avoiding some of the newer and more upscale (albeit GREAT) restaurants Lima has and instead going for the old tried and true in Lima (Sonia's) and experiencing truly what people eat in the Andean and jungle regions. If you ever wonder "what's typical Peruvian food" or if you, as a Peruvian are ever asked "what's typical Peruvian" (pop this DVD in for them) this is for you.
Also, not to miss are the breathtaking shots of Macchu Picchu, colonial architecture, and overall Peruvian landmarks and scenery.

5 out of 5 stars To another level of ability.......2006-04-05

Aspiring skiers will love this DVD. The instructors explain fundamental skills and demonstrate techniques using step-by-step progressions. I found myself drawn to easily glide into an invigorating sport with this DVD. True experts show the audience how to ski from a skier's first day out and mentor skiers all the way through the advanced skills. I more recently picked up their new "Nordic Skiing Technique DVD" on Amazon.com and it brings the technical content to yet another level!

5 out of 5 stars True understanding of the sport from beginner to expert .......2005-04-11

I'm the head coach of a college xc racing program and I enjoy new material to dig my teeth into. I picked this DVD set up for our local club's end of season party. Boy! I wish I had bought it sooner, and may be two copies. The kids and coaches played it over and over.

The first DVD in the package is an "action documentary" - fun fun fun. Not only did it really capture the spirit of the sport, but explained the whole cross-training, dryland and on-snow stages in a skiers development. The technical standard of skiing presented in this disk is truly elite. No wonder it constitutes required viewing by the highest level coaching certification up in Canada.

There are over 50 world class athletes and I lost count of the number of World Cup - Olympic Skiers showing their stuff outside of a racing context.

The second DVD in the package has bout 3 hours of instuctional material, demonstrated in detail, by some of the best skiers in the world (Olympic Gold Medalists and World Champs again). The material takes someone from beginner right up to expert levels. The narrative, imagery and special features are rich in depth and show true understanding of the sport, at various levels. It is simply the most comprehensive package for the sport of xc skiing to date.

The menu structure let us go directly to where we needed to. Although, I would have liked a play-all button.

I researched the Internet, and spoke to my fellow coaches and club members, before purchasing this DVD. It was highly recommended and lived up to the praise. Incidently, the entire script is on the web site xczone.tv, so I knew exactly what to expect.

I was surprised, however, to read the spiteful review by Mimi Westphalen from Colorado here on amazon. It appeared completely out of context with the 17 other reviews by Sports Associations, Olympic Coaches, Instructors, World Cup Athletes, all the major ski magazines and other skiing enthusiasts. To say that the DVD covers things in a superficial manner is bizzare beyond all reason. Sounds like there is a hang up here. As for race footage, just copy the events off TV like everyone else. Personnally, I prefer the superior and professional presentation that Unlimited Nordics Skiing provided to our club and coaching staff.

My advice to readers is to ask around, read what reputable sources have to say and view the product web site xczone.tv for the scripts, previews and explainations in order to understand exactly what you are getting.

    1 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2005-04-06

My husband and I were very disappointed with this DVD set. One DVD contains an "action documentary" with music - we did not like that DVD. We thought the second instructional DVD is mediocre and might be helpful if you are a complete novice. The treatment of subjects is in our opinion pretty superficial overall. There is little breakdown of technique. There is minimal race footage, which is helpful to watch to learn by watching experts. Parts of the footage seemed recycled - we heard very similar discussions about ski wax in the separate "tuning" and "equipment primer" sections. You cannot watch the DVDs straight through as they dump you back into a main menu after you complete a scene. So you must frequently fiddle with the controls to select scenes to watch. That feature is helpful if you want to access scenes easily perhaps but we did not like it. I am not usually a complainer but we were so disappointed with this set that I wanted to put up a review.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-01-30

"Combining graceful athletes, fantastic locations and an upbeat soundtrack, XCZONE's "Unlimited" will certainly invite new people to try cross country skiing. Undoubtedly, current skiers will feel an adrenaline shot in the arm-or perhaps envy-just watching world class athletes ski top North American Nordic locations." - CROSS COUNTRY SKIER MAGAZINE

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable on a number of levels.......2004-01-09

"The Unlimited Nordic Skiing DVD by XCZONE.TV is remarkable, not only for its cinematography and energy, but for way in which the producers have actively engaged elite coaches, instructors and athletes throughout Canada and the USA, and achieved the best measure of consensus to date in what constitutes proper cross-country skiing technique." - ROGER ARCHAMBAULT, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR BIATHLON CANADA, CERTIFIED LEVEL 5 BIATHLON AND THE 1998 OLYMPIC COACH
