Saki Asamiya is an unlikely heroine: while serving time in prison on trumped-up charges, she's forced to become an undercover police agent to keep her mother, who's serving time on death row, from being executed. She returns to her old high school and acquires two friends: gentle artist Junko and adoring Sampei Nowake. The three Mizuchi sisters, the daughters of a corrupt politician, are using the school to launch their own schemes that include extortion, assault, drug-dealing, kidnapping, rape, and murder. In addition to her skill as martial artist, Saki fights with a police-issue yo-yo (!), which becomes a deadly weapon in her hands. The improbable and violent story gets sorted out in the end--more or less, but it hardly seems worth the bother. (Rated 15 and older, but more appropriate for 17 and older: nudity, violence, violence against women, sexual situations, profanity, alcohol, tobacco and drug use) --Charles Solomon
Description
The last time Saki left school it was to change her school uniform for prison greys, but when the Feds needed someone to infiltrate a ruthless criminal organization operating within an exclusive high school, they knew they needed the baddest bad girl of them all! Now Saki's back on the streets for the ultimate final exam, armed with a top-secret weapon that only LOOKS like a yo-yo, and a license to use whatever force necessary to achieve her goal. Saki's lovely, lethal and ready to lay it all on the line-because if she fails this test, the next outfit she'll be wearing is a body bag!

Yoko Minamino Rocks!!!.......2007-02-09
Ive been a big fun of yoko minamino since her debut in 1985. I watched all Sukebandeka series on TV back in 1980's and loved them all.
I enjoyed watching this movie, however, I wish if there were more scenes of Okyo, Yukino, and Yui using their weapons. Personaly I think that battle scene is the best part of Sukebandeka. All three girls, Okyo, Yukino, and Yui rarely used their weapon at the last part of the movie. Yukino even didn't use Fukusa; which appeared in the TV series quite often. Saki's ultimate yoyo was quite awesome.
It is a great movie with cute Japanese girls in it. I remember Sukebandeka The Movie was quite success for an idol movie in Japan.
Correction.......2006-06-08
the statement by JT maruyama "Sukeban Deka: Counter Attack of the Kazama Sisters features Asaka Yui as Minamino's replacement and take place midway in Season 3 of the series." is incorrect. The story, in fact, occurs after the end of Season 3.
The movie was great but what a horrendous DVD cover..........2006-04-28
Don't be fooled by the neat cover graphic that Amazon has accompanying the DVD information, that's not the true cover art. The cover art that came with my DVD was a washed-out, garish and almost amateurish scan cover that looked dreadful (what was Tokyo Shock thinking?). Thankfully, the DVD itself was good quality. Both movies will definitely please those fans of the original "Sukeban Deka" TV series. "Sukeban Deka:The Movie" takes place after the events of Season 2 and features Minamino Yoko, who was the second actress to protray the heroine Asamiya Saki. "Sukeban Deka: Counter Attack of the Kazama Sisters" features Asaka Yui as Minamino's replacement and take place midway in Season 3 of the series. Minamino is quite fetching in her role while Asaka brings a youthful spunk and charm to her character. The action for both movies is a step above the TV series (although not what you would call big budget). Both movies do get a bit campy at times especially towards the finales but all-in-all both are fun movies that will have viewers entertained (so as long as you suspend logic). Bonus features are a bit scarce but do include production specials and the original trailers.
Rebel with a Cause.......2006-04-13
A classic of Japanese cinema? Well, no. But as fun, campy adventure movies go, this is a really nice one. The movie is based on a successful Japanese TV series in mid-1980's Japan (itself based on a manga of the early 1970's by Wada Shinji), in which tough, delinquent (but not too delinquent) high school girls work as secret agents investigating crimes for some weird branch of the police (hence the title: "sukeban"="juvenile delinquent girl" and "deka"="detective"). In the TV series, there were three Sukeban Deka agents (after one retired, another took her place when a new threat to Japan/the world showed up), each of which used a distinctive yo-yo weapon in addition to good old punches and kicks. The main character in this movie is Sukeban Deka #2 (played by Minamino Yoko), who is rejoined by her cohorts Kyoko (Sagara Haruko) and Yukino (Yoshizawa Akie) and teamed up with her successor #3 (Asaka Yui).
In the movie, Sukeban Deka #2 and the other girls are all trying to lead normal lives--you know, graduate high school, get into college, work part-time jobs, study abroad, and all that. But of course fate throws a monkey wrench into these well-laid plans. They discover that at a boot camp reform school on an isolated island in Tokyo Bay the school principal is in fact training the kids to be neo-fascist paramilitary shock troops whom he plans to lead in a coup d'etat of Japan. Naturally the heroic young ladies have to stop him and rescue the kids (at least the ones who haven't been totally brainwashed by this sort of Mishima Yukio-esque program of "tough love"), dealing with a host of challenges and set-backs and squaring off against a seemingly impervious principal and his army of villains.
This movie being based on a prior TV show, the moviemakers assume some knowledge of the characters on the viewer's part and so they don't work too hard to establish the characters' personalities and back stories here, though some judicious flashbacks and conversational references more or less do the job. Still, some scenes must be just plain cryptic to anyone who never saw the show--for example, at the end, two unidentified girls never before seen in the movie abruptly show up and congratulate Sukeban Deka #3 (these are Kazama Yuka (Onishi Yuka) and Kazama Yuma (Nakamura Yuma), SD#3's cohorts)*. It must be admitted too that some of the action scenes are somewhat implausible or a bit clumsily done...but frankly, that actually adds to the enjoyment.
The movie is unrated, but there's nothing in the movie that wouldn't be Rated PG here in the States. Just good, clean, campy fun.
*For anyone interested, if you have a region 2 DVD player and can comprehend spoken Japanese reasonably well, the entire Sukeban Deka TV series is available at amazon.co.jp. There are five DVD sets for each of the three Sukeban Deka incarnations, making for fifteen in all (most of which are double sets).

a yo-yo? Oh boy........2007-06-03
Sukeban deka is a sub par action flick. Good for its time but if you been watching anime for awhile, then nothing here is going to blow you away or even raise your eyebrows. A couple of plot twist, an unexpected turn, a decent story and decent characters. The action scenes aren't too bad either. The anime is very cliche with the ulrta skiny anime girl with incredible strength and just a very cheesy concept. She fights with a yo-yo. Thats pretty corny to me. I recommend this only if you have some extra cash. Nothing too special but nothing bad either.
It sounded good when I ordered it.......2005-10-09
I watched it and I couldnt walk away, I loved the fights and the feel of power you felt coming from that family, it had a great story line, its a story of betrayal and murder. When I say its great I dont mean its great, I mean its excellent! It caught my eye awhile back and I got it, but the ending was the best part of all.. So if you like action or something with Mafia or Yokuza traits then buy it or rent it.
a cult anime.......2005-07-06
This is an 90's anime that only had 2 episodes which makes me mad cause in that case this should of been a movie if they won't make a series out of it with several episodes. It's the manga off of the orginial live action anime back in 1972 now animated.
A.D.Vision needs to stop rating mature animes like this 15 what are they dum.
It Saki vs the law, she ask two friends from her high to help her get her mother out of jail. This anime has a lot of action and adult situations in it.
Don't watch for the plot........2005-05-01
I say that because to be honest, it's a cliche, by the numbers good vs evil story and there's holes you can drive a Mack Truck through. The makers tried very hard to make her an anti hero and they only sort of suceeded.
That said, watch it because Saki kicks ass and uses a yo-yo for a weapon. There are some wonderful fight scenes and she uses the yo-yo to great effect. Watch it for those. Heck, make a drinking game out of it.
I should also add that in the end, when she starts tearing up the bad guy's organization single handed, is when the animation comes into it's own.
cool Cool COOL!!.......2004-12-02
Excellent anime series, has 2 episodes, and WAIT! There's character development, Suffecient action scenes, AND A PLOT?!?!?
Wow! Oh yeah, and Saki Asamiya rocks in Sukeban Deka, yeah..It makes me mad how those people who made UTENA ripped off Saki's character design!!

Rebel, Rebel and the Law of Diminishing Returns.......2006-06-05
Like its predecessor "Sukeban Deka: The Movie" of which it's the sequel of sorts, this DVD is a fun, campy adventure movie that is enjoyable to watch if you determine beforehand not to take it too seriously. (Cinema snobs beware, this is not the next Kurosawa). Again, the movie is based on a successful Japanese TV series in mid-1980's Japan (itself based on a manga of the early 1970's by Wada Shinji), in which tough, delinquent (and yet heart-warmingly delinquent in a pleasant way somehow) high school girls work as secret agents investigating crimes for some high-level branch of the police (hence the title: "sukeban"="juvenile delinquent girl" and "deka"="detective"). In the TV series, there were three Sukeban Deka agents (after one retired, another took her place when a new threat to Japan/the world showed up), each of which used a distinctive yo-yo weapon in addition to good old punches and kicks. The main character in this movie is Sukeban Deka #3, Kazama Yui (played by Asaka Yui), who is rejoined by her sisters Kazama Yuka (Onishi Yuka) and Kazama Yuma (Nakamura Yuma)--yes, in all three cases the character's first name is the same as the actress who plays her.
The basic premise of "Sukeban Deka 2" is largely recycled from the first movie, with a radically right-wing organization using a legitimate cover in order to train a teenage army to overthrow the current Japanese government. This time it's the enemy within, though--the police branch in charge of the Sukeban Deka project having expanded on the concept and created a taskforce of yoyo-toting teenagers to enforce law and order among the youth of Tokyo. The overseer of this taskforce of course turns out to be the bad guy, who is in fact grooming the kids for much bigger things. Kazama Yui is at first a member of this taskforce, but then gets disenchanted with their ruthlessness and opts out; then she finds out about their evil schemes, rejoins her sisters, and teams up with a rag-tag band of misfits and social drop-outs to stop them.
The movie has a number of good points. Asaka Yui is a cute young lady who, as a reviewer for the first movie (where she has a supporting role) says, "brings a youthful spunk and charm to her character"--I totally agree, and she continues to do so here. In general too she's the best of the three Sukeban Dekas when it comes to fight scenes and action, and she's somewhat more convincing in this regard. And her chief nemesis in this movie is the group leader of the youth taskforce, a tough girl with a mean yo-yo of her own, so the doppelganger effect is kind of neat.
That said, this sequel seems a little weaker overall. Once again the moviemakers assume you've watched the TV series* and so don't do much to establish the characters' personalities and back stories, but this is not so much a fault of the movie as an effect of its eccentric distribution in the U.S. Other problems are just intrinsic to the film, though. The plot is loose and meandering and doesn't hold together well--I'm not expecting a masterpiece storyline here, but the developments should at least be kept on track in something like a streamlined manner. Then too, Yui's two sisters are largely superfluous, with roles largely equivalent to fifth wheels; they leave most of the actual "counter-attack" to Yui, and it seems like they're in the movie just because they were in the TV series and so are expected to show up here too. Finally, and most importantly (for me, anyway), this movie totally--and I mean totally--lacks the incredibly interesting elements based on Esoteric Buddhism, Shugendo (a type of mountaineering blend of Buddhism, Shinto, and Taoism) and folk ninja stuff that made the TV series with Yui so cool and enchanting. All of that's been secularized away in the movie, and it seems rather flat and bland as a result.
All that aside, though, the movie is still very enjoyable. If you like fun, campy adventure stories where strong, heroic girls beat up the bad guys and save the day, I highly recommend this movie even with all its little faults.
Note: The movie is unrated, but there's nothing in the movie that wouldn't be Rated PG here in the States. Just good, clean fun here, folks.
