Most Courageous film ever........2007-06-11

American people should be proud of this film, the courage of showing such a disgusting subject and not only the courage of producers, but the actors and the director are equally courageous. Why I said that American people should be proud of this film, unfortunately United States are the greatest producer of pornography and all kind of pornography of the whole world, in Miami for example white americans get men from Africa and countries like Cuba and put them to make sex with "barely legal white american girls" creating tons and tons of sexual sites that are a direct offense to American families and to American history, someone should do something immediately, maybe CIA or FBI, someone, so this film is an alert to American people of what's been happening nowadays, thank you Nicolas Cage, sometimes is necessary to show things even when it is not what we want to see. It is necessary to recover the moral values of the founding fathers.

Extraordinary Film.......2007-03-14

Once you get past the nagging and uninspired performance of Catherine Keener, You will find this to be an outstanding and often times very uncomfortable (in a good way) film. With the exception of Keener, great performances abound....Including Cage, who in my opinion has never returned to the form he displayed in "Leaving Las Vegas"...This movie being the exception. Joaquin Phoenix, however, is the real standout. Great performance. James Gandolfinni is completely unlikeable, but being the villan, that is a good thing. Great story, beautifully shot and completely engrossing. You cannot lose with this film. This is great filmaking !!! 5 Stars.

This movie actually takes you like it or not to a completely different world and I don't mean by use of a Star Ship or matter energy transporter. No the strange new worlds one experiences watching this movie are found right here on Earth in the seedy sides of town. OFTEN SOME rich powerful men by day have GIGANTIC strange even perverse sexual appitites by night for treats both subtle and gross. As we know in the United States wherever there is money waiting their is no need so twisted, saddistic and sick that some willing hard up enterprising soul won't make it his personal business of satisfy fully completely and often.

Men of wealth with perverse sexual needs and those who satisfy them is the core of the story. 8MM is a peek into a world of, rich powerful men with saddistic sexual needs that appear to know no boundries at all. 8MM also highlights in great detail the things done by those thuggish brutish men who make it their life's work to satisfy their clients most craven evil ruthlessly profligate dispicable passions. How the movie unfolds I won't share here but trust me this is an action adventure movie with a truly sick and twisted plot. 8MM brings to the surface some of the gruesome horror lurking in deep shadows of some alternative sexual lifestyles. 8MM will imprint itself on your mind because, a visit to the world it reveals is not one easily forgotten at least by me and I loved watching it.

A note this movie is diffinately not family viewing. 8MM is not even for the faint of heart from polite society. I am warning you that while still VERY MUCH Hollywood this film does a pretty good job of being real in ways that could way too easily gag a maggot!

Rare and Unusual 8mm Loops from the Sick, Sick 70s!

8mm loops were the sexual underground. They were sold under the counter in adult bookstores or by shady peddlers and selling or possessing them was a crime back in the day. The loops usually came in white boxes: b&w was one price, color was a higher price. A film like this could cost $20 to $100 per loop...and that's `60s and `70s money! And you never knew what you were getting. Later the loops would be labeled with names like "Pretty Girls," "Golden Girls," etc. Most of these loops had no titles as after repeated playing the film would get worn and simply break off: they would just start with "saucy material" or get down to it after a minute or so of plot. Common plots were doctor/patient, boss/secretary, hitchhikers being picked up, etc., with darker plots showcasing S&M and other twisted stuff.

42nd Street has hand-picked 20 loops out of the 42P archives. This first installment is all color and has something for everyone. Call it a great mixed bag, and a salute as well, to that 42nd Street mainstay, Blackjack Books - a place that retained that old Times Square squalor right up until it was closed.

Brings back Memories.......2007-04-10

A week before viewing the DVD, I was telling the younger guys at work how lucky they are, to have DVD's and VHS's and Cable. It brings back memories of feeding the projector, and hoping the film did'nt break and hanging up a white bedsheet if you did't have a screen.. I have to share this with a fellow "ART" Lover, before he retires in June.

This thoroughly unpleasant thriller from the hands of Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin) offers very little in its lurid tour of snuff films and the seedy pornographic underworld. A wooden Nicolas Cage stars as a private detective hired by a tycoon's widow, who discovers in her dead husband's safe some 8mm footage of a young girl being sexually abused and slaughtered. Cage's job is to determine the veracity of the film and to find out the girl's identity, whether she be alive or dead. What could have been a taut, nerve-jangling thriller is instead a lumbering, overwrought but underwritten tale of vigilante justice. Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker also penned the imaginative and compelling Seven, but you wouldn't know it from this tired and monotonous script. Schumacher tries for echoes of both The Silence of the Lambs and Paul Schrader's Hardcore (which stars George C. Scott as a father trying to find his daughter in the seedy porn industry), but despite some slick camerawork, the film fails to draw the audience into either the mystery of the missing girl or Cage's supposed internal conflicts. It's not so much the unsavory subject matter as it is the sloppy and unimaginative filmmaking that makes the movie unbearable. Of the entire cast only Joaquin Phoenix, as a charismatic goth boy who works at an adult book store, comes away with a memorable performance. --Mark Englehart

This is a very well-made movie that made me feel a lot of different emotions. Disturbing to think about "snuff" films and its great that someone made a good movie revolving around that. Nicholas Cage once again displays his talent as an amazing actor. I am really impressed by this movie and how it made me feel throughout. Unique, creative, thrilling and chilling!!!! I love it!!

Two stars for the movie and another for Joaquin Pheonix.......2006-04-03

The main plot of the movie: a rich man dies; his wife hires Cage as a PI to see if a woman was really killed on a film she found in his safe. While the material that is dealt with in the film is disgusting, it's not why I didn't like it. I usually like Cage and think he is a great actor, but he was stiff and un-Cage like throughout the movie. He just couldn't get into the part and become his character, rather than just saying the lines. The movie moved sooo slowly, that I just wanted to skip to the end and find out what happened.

The only true treasure of the film was Joaquin Pheonix, whose role was unfortunately too short. He was the only one who seemed to hold the film together and made it worth watching. It reminded me just how good of an actor he is, even in a small part like that. Other than that, I did respect the end of the movie, which showed that anyone could be a monster, your neighbor, your friend, even someone in your family...and monsters aren't dressed like the boogeyman, but rather look like everyone else on the street.

If you have nothing to do and like Pheonix, then I recommend it. If you like Cage then don't watch it, you will be highly disappointed. The unfortunate thing is that the plot is a good idea; it just wasn't pulled off well.

Disturbing Subject Matter.......2006-02-06

The first time I saw this movie I found it so disturbing in subject matter that I thought I would never watch it again. It is still disturbing but I don't find it as bad as the first time I saw it. The topic and what the film is based around is the underbelly society and the horrible side of human behavior in the outlaw culture of underground pornography, specifically snuff films. Snuff films are supposedly an urban legend where some one is raped and or assaulted and then killed on film. The premise revolves around a rich widow who finds a reel of film in her recently deceased husbands safe that contains what appears to be a 'Snuff Film'. She hires family man and P.I. Nicholas Cage to investigate and says she only wants to know if the film is real, who the girl was and if she is alive or if she was murdered on film. This plunges family man Cage into the scummy dark world of outlaw underground porn and the sick disgusting people that bottom feed there. And as the old saying goes and as Joaquin Phoenix warns Cage, "when you dance with the devil you don't change him, he changes you."

Good movie but definitely not for everyone and the material can be very disturbing to those who can't handle it. Katherine Keener is good as is Peter Stormare and an unforgettable villian simply known as The Machine.

Dark Disturbing and Utterly Enthralling.......2006-01-14

It seems that whenever this movie is brought up in a discussion the general negative reaction seems to be: It was so *bad*! The entire thing was about violent porn! Who on Earth would *like* that?!?!

Well, no one. And that's the point. This movie is *not* made as a way of glamorizing violence and death so that the viewer will like it. The entire point of the movie is to show that there happens to be a very real and very ugly world out there that we happily do not or can not see on a day to day basis.

The film pulls no punches with reality even going so far as to be the only film of it;s kind in history to have a paid dominatrix as a consultant. It shows a gritty part of the porn industry that 20/20 in all of it's Oh So Shocked pompous news reports would vomit at the site of.

But don't let that turn you off. The worst of it is mostly psychological. As for violence the hardest part for me to watch was in the beginning when Cage is watching the snuff film he's asked to investigate. We see the girl's killer sock her in the face before slashing her to bits which I found hard to watch because: 1) I HATE seeing women get punched. So from a moral stand point I was offended which is a good thing. Seeing things like this serve to remind us of why it's important to hold onto our own morals and ethics which seems to be the theam of the movie. And...2) The actual "slashing to bits" is never shown at any point throughout the movie, but what we *do* see is Cage's expression when watching the film which sometimes can be more jarring than seeing the actual deed its self.

Watching this movie I'm reminded of another book I read where the author had written something along the lines of: I make a point to never turn away from torture. It seems disrespectful to turn your head away because you have the option when the person who is in pain has nothing at all. To shut of your TV because you found some of this offensive to your person seems like a cheep way out. More than anything this film serves to remind us that there are parts of you that you may not like, but exists anyway.

How you deal with them after that will determine who you are.

Who did the music?.......2006-01-09

At best this is a bad B-movie remake of Hardcore.

But who did the music? the credits only list two peices, neither one of which apppears to be the arabic music all thru the film.

I WAS VERY SURPRISED WITH THE ENDING. I LOVE GUESSING WHO DONE IT, BUT HAVE TO ADMIT; THIS ONE FOOLED ME! THIS IS THE FIRST MOVIE, I HAVE SEEN WITH JOHNATON SCHAECH. HE REALLY UNDERSTOOD HIS CHARACTER FULLY. ALSO, LORI HEURING, WAS VERY BELEIVABLE!

Sexy Thriller - great Sat nite flick for edgy couples wanting smart & erotic fun.......2006-11-07

Even with a cursory perusal of the cover art and the use of a few excess brain cells not killed by drinking, it is obvious to the casual viewer that 8MM 2 - Unrated and Exposed bares no resemblance to the fantastic original starring Nicolas Cage & Joaquin Phoenix (get that out your head right away), and written by the dude, Andrew Kevin Walker, who wrote the earth-shattering "Se7en". The film-makers are using the "8MM" brand for recogniton-sake (i.e. they owned the rights, ergo - they can sell this "brand as something familiar). However, the movie manages to combine solid acting, nice locations and good production values to make a dark thriller that is both salacious and entertaining. The film is about an attractive young couple (played by gorgeous, fresh faces Johnathon Schaech and Lori Heuring) whose vacation "indiscretion" with a Euro-babe played by Zita Görög (a gorgeous girl who hosts Hungary's version of American Idol in real life) leads to big trouble, secret videos, back-mail, murder & the whole 9 yards. Nice twists and turns lead to some surprising outcomes - some may keep guessing (I did), some may figure it out, but still well-crafted entertainment.

What separates 8MM 2 from most of the drek in this genre (you see these flicks all the time on late night Skin-a-max and just outside the"adult" section of your neighborhood video store) is that it is skillfully made, has talented actors and is filmed in Budapest, the real life sex capital of the world. These touches elevate the film above most of the low-budget, T&A soap operas being cranked out by auteurs looking to make a quick buck by titillating the audience. The settings are authentic, explicit and even a bit sleazy (many scenes have acres of leggy Penthouse Pet-like Euros, walking around naked, having sex, etc...). As a viewer, I really bought into the scenario that found this young couple entering a strange world and descending into a moral and sexual abyss (and liking it a bit). The actors are easy on the eyes and believable (particularly the low-key, girl-next-door-esque Lori Heuring). The production is exceedingly professional - spectacular Budapest exteriors; very competent and well-made. I even liked the DVD extras and "making of" material - it framed the film and revelaed clearly that the people involved took the project seriously and were not just attempting to cash in on another "Wild Things" sequel.

Some viewers may be disappointed that the film had nothing to do with the original. Seriously folks, how many flicks can you make about snuff films (which ironically have no sequels). If you're looking for some nice couples fun to get the old lady (or man) in the mood on a Saturday night, and want something that won't insult your intelligence, check out 8MM 2 - Unrated and Exposed.

Good Unclean Fun - A Chocolate Supper instead of a Square Meal .......2006-05-31

8 MM 2's biggest flaw is its title. I've heard that it was originally released as "The Velvet Side of Hell". The latter title would have done the film justice by correctly setting the audience's expectations. 8 MM 2 is a guilty pleasure that's the equivalent of making dinner out of a Chunky bar dipped in a jar of Skippy. This film is simply a competently filmed erotic romp with sexy leads and interesting scenery. Johnathon Schaech and Lori Heuring are gorgeous but not plastic...or silicon (remember this as you watch the film, ha ha). The erotic content is lavishly filmed and very sleazy but not cheesy.

In a miscalculated attempt to leverage a tie-in to 8 MM, the producers / distributors / studio reached the wrong audience and the scheme backfired. And "wrong audience" doesn't just mean the wrong individual viewers. It also applies to the cinematic appetite of the viewer at the time that she's considering a film. For instance, I very much enjoyed the original 8 MM. It was a well written, well made, well acted, relevant film. And surprise, I also very much enjoyed 8 MM 2. This "sequel" is fun and pretty good for what it is. When I first popped it in, thinking that it was a true sequel, I was put off, but also titillated. So I put 8 MM 2 aside, watched a more serious film and then enjoyed 8 MM 2 when I was in a lighter, more...um...adventurous...mood.

8 MM 2 has an attractive professional cast, expensive sets, competent camera work, good lighting and compelling scenery. The plot is as trivially functional as a plot should be in a film subtitled "Unrated and Exposed". (At some points, the film seems to be poking fun at itself and even if it's not, you sure can.) So just mentally edit the title to "The Velvet Side of Hell" before you decide whether or not such a film will satisfy your current cinematic appetite.

Thrill-less Sexual Thriller: Criminally Tedious and Awfully Boring.......2006-04-03

Years ago I saw Nicholas Cage's `8 MM,' which was a pretty bad film, leaving some nasty taste in my mouth. Then someone still remembered this forgettable film, and decided to re-use the title again to lure the unsuspecting viewers like me. The fact is, `8MM 2'was originally called `The Velvet Side of Hell' another forgettable film that has absolutely nothing to do with Nick Cage's thriller. Apparently the film is categorized as thriller or mystery, but the greatest mystery is how this kind of dishonesty can be allowed at all.

The film's director refers to the film as "sexual thriller." Surely it is sexual, but never thrilling. Right from the beginning that includes one incredible and laughable sexual fantasy in the courtroom, David, aspiring (and boring) politician played by Johnathon Schaech does so many ridiculous things that it is impossible to believe that he could be a fiancé of Tish, daughter of American ambassador in Budapest.

And these lovers are stupidly seduced by the night of Budapest when one glamorous lady named Rita shows up before them. Cue to the obligatory `threesome' scene. And they are blackmailed. And they search Rita who just disappeared. And they go further into the underworld of porno industry of the city. And they are deep in trouble. And we are going to see just another predictable ending that is not as clever as the filmmakers seem to think.

[TEDIOUS, SO TEDIOUS] Actually, at the earliest stage of `8MM 2,' tedium settles in, so you cannot enjoy the film even as `so-bad-so-good' film. The film tries to stretch the poor story more than 100 minutes, which is told in the most thrill-free, by-the-number way, without giving the couple any real dangers. The film also attempts to show the psychological changes that are happening in the characters, that of Tish in particular, but unfortunately poor acting from the leading lady cannot convince us that she is fatally attracted to the world forbidden to her. One scene about two ladies dancing together is clearly inspired by `Basic Instinct,' but there is no Sharon Stone and her fearless and audacious performance, which is not afraid of being campy.

Johnathon Schaech and director J. S. Cardone have worked together in `The Forsaken' and `Mummy an' the Armadillo.' Probably `8MM 2' is worse than these, and much worse than Nicholas Cage's original. The only thing I thought good about it is the beautiful buildings of Budapest. But as many scenes are shot at night, even this fun is denied to us.

SEX SEX SEX.......2006-02-22

This lurid, sex-gorged nudy has nothing to do with the Nicolas Cage thriller; instead it's more a soft porn peep show. The characters who are not likeable in the least do stupid thing after stupid thing, and what's worse, seem bored doing it. Johnathon Schaech and Lori Heuring, who are usually adept in their performances, are tepid and listless in this inane story about an aspiring politician, his nympho wife and a threesome that gets them into all sorts of trouble. Poor Bruce Davison who is so good in KINGDOM HOSPITAL is lost in the role of Heurings judicial aspiring father, and the twist ending is unresolved so we've actually had no reason to want anything good to happen to anyone. A waste of celluloid.

By the 1950s, 8mm was the preferred format, whether to record junior's 3rd birthday party, a family's vacation travelogue, or a big-breasted burlesque dancer's erotic strip-tease. Guess which one evolved into marketable commodity?
