One of the best martial arts DVD's.......2007-03-09
Dirty Ho is one of the best DVD's in the martial arts category. What can I say about it..if you are into martial arts classics, this DVD is for you. It also stars Gordon Liu and Lau Kar Leung...2 of the best in the business. Get it. You will not regret it.
Dirty shovel.......2007-02-28
Hey kung fu fans like myself! I know whatever i say you might still want to see this movie, but trust me when you do see it ha ha you will be bored! This is another movie that recieved tons of hype for who knows what reason? I gave it three stars for having a story you can follow. As far as the fight scenes go they are not spectacular. I know its an oldie but still . Go see the magnificant butcher or fearless heyena. bye
Old 'Skool" Kung Fu!!.......2006-07-02
I really enjoyed this flick,,truly one of Gordon Liu best performance,,,there is no question,,not only is this guy an amazing kung fu performer, but he can truly act. This flick is truly a gem,,a ,must have classic. Old school kung fu very transparent from the start to finish!! Definatly a must have for the collection,,,,you will not be dissapointed!!
One of the best Shaw Brothers movies ever.......2006-05-25
Now this is one of the best red sun releases there are. It is presented in a letterboxed format. And the film print has been restored 100%. It is so beautiful. I am telling you, when you buy red sun release, MAKE SURE IT SAYS REMASTERED ON THE BOX. If it doesn't say it, it is non remastered, has imbedded subs, is full screened, etc. Every red sun release has been exceptable to me(except 1), but the remastered ones are seriously of the top 5 percentile fo my HUGE dvd collection. And if you are wonderign if it is good, look it up on here, most likely I have reviewed it and the red sun version they are showign too.
Now this movie is truly one of the best shaw productions ever. Great opening shaw white backround battle sequence. Wong Yue(not jimmy wang yu) and gordon liu are both in a brothel and keep both of the guys keep giving all the girls a ton of money in hopes to be with them all night. When Wong yue realizes that Gordon is the playboy who is competing with him he tries to fight him. What we find out is that gordon is a Prince. So since gordon can't(won't) fight, wong yue beats him up anyway. Dirty Ho. I saw the title of this movie, and said WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it is surprisingly a fitting title. So wong yue gets into a little too much trouble(not like he hadn't caused any before), and gordon decides to take him on. He forces him to be his disciple and does this by making Dirty Ho think he is poisoned. So just before this we see that the Gordon Liu's brother has plans to kill him so that he can become emperor. He doesn't want it to be known so he sends assasins. First up is Johhny Wang(lung lung wei) who invites him to a wine tasting event. This fight is one of the most brilliant I have ever seen put to the jade screen. Hsiou Ho, who has played little monkey in "Mad Monkey Kung Fu" and Fong Sai Yuk in "Disciples of master Killer" is Johhny Wang's sidekick(waiter) and his acrobatics are on full display. Watching Gordon have to hide his skills whenever Dirty Ho is around is SUCH a pleasure. Finally at the midway point we get a twist. One that I wasn't expecting and didn't think it was going to work. But it turned out to be a great final fight and the arrow use was pretty unique I thought for a movie like this. They have these Mongolian Archers in the back row who freaking jump over the front row archers already shooting arrows in mid air RIGHT after the front row archers shoot. It is just some more stunning choreography by Master Lau Kar Leung. Also unique to this is a group of very wierd vilians. A group comes over to fight wing yue and gordon and they are all just a bit on the wierd side. The first one is a guy who you punch all you can and he just takes it. The next guy is the biter, you can guess what he does. The next guy is bitter face and has a sad face and he bi*** slaps you until your face is cringed up like his. I won't tell you the rest but like I said, this classic has some VERY unique touches. It ends up being a weird scene but the only questionable part of the movie, Not everyday that you find a good kung fu MOVIE. Just like what he did in Shaolin mantis and Shaolin Challenges Ninja, Master Lau has proven to be the best kung fu director ever.
So the picture quality is absolutely perfecto. And the 2-channel classic dub job is very good too. Trailers include celestial's releases of Five Venoms, Crippled Avengers, and Mad Monkey Kung Fu. By the way, all these movies have been released by red sun. Just make sure it says remastered, cause if it does, then they DO NOT lie like ground zero or crash cinema does.
Cherish this movie people, it is one for adults, the children, everyone.

"Mr. Ho, let me toast you.".......2006-02-16
As unlikely as it seems, Dirty Ho might actually be the better translation of the original Cantonese title. It's certainly better than Rotten Head Ho. Whatever the english title may be the film is one of the best Shaw Studio releases. Directed by Liu Chia-Liang and starring Gordon Liu (Kill Bill), Dirty Ho set high standards for comic sensibility, fight choreography, and costume and set design. Standards that many martial arts films today fail to live up to.
Like many Shaw releases, Dirty Ho opens with a funky horn theme that plays through the opening credits. Before those credits have finished there has already been a huge battle that works just as well as a dance number. It's anachronistic to the character relationships and doesn't have anything to do with the film yet in no way does it detract from the finished product. The narrative begins with two men, Ho (Wong Yue) & Mr. Wang (G. Liu), each hosting a little party in adjoining spaces. They each aim to win the attention of several women at the parties. This is where one of the first jokes begins. For narrative purposes the scene is meant to show how Ho is so hopelessly outclassed by Wang that he doesn't even realize that he's being schooled. The scene works equally well as a joke about the competing macho personalities of the protagonists. They one-up each other to the point of bankruptcy (for one of the characters) for the sole reason of having a few pretty courtesans hang out for but a few minutes. After Ho is escorted from the premises by the dirty po-po he's broke and needs to score some more jewels to get back in the game. His travels keep his path crossing with Mr. Wang's and soon he becomes Wang's disciple. Ho is not a willing disciple but must remain with Wang in order to get the cure for a poison that makes his head rot. This is all part of a plan from Mr. Wang to develop the talent he sees in Ho.
Wang though has other problems, like concealing his true identity. He is thought of as the likely successor to his father, who happens to be the king. Since he cares nothing for power and desires only to study and better the martial arts, wine and fine arts he is in a bit of a pickle. Trying to help him out of this fix is one of his brothers who has sent assassins to make sure that he never has to make the decision. It's up to Wang & Ho to fight back. They do this through a variety of means, mostly having something to do with fisticuffs. During Ho's training Wang beats back several would-be killers in some of the smartest battles to ever land on screen. In one scene Wang is tasting wine with an assassin and the two continue polite discussion and drinking while simultaneously trying to kill each other. The assistant to the host attempts to attack Mr. Wang with fighting styles that change according to the wine he is serving. Look especially for the boxing that follows the "Monkey Placenta/Deer Antler" wine. Wang later has a similar battle while browsing antiques with Ho generally remaining clueless about the entire affair until the build up to the final battle begins.
Released in 1979 Dirty Ho is quite a bit more than just a few fights scenes and a thin plot. The attempts on Wang's life are witty critiques of the pseudo-civility of politics where "The Gentleman" from one place might humbly and gently disagree with the views of his "esteemed colleague" while each does everything they possibly can to destroy the other by essentially any possible means. Mr. Wang as the protagonist as well is a more thoughtful character than one might expect from a kung fu flic. He is superficially portrayed as a benevolent royal of sorts but his actions show a many using his wealth to manipulate those around him, essentially for sport. His mentoring of Ho is mostly for his own gain and it leads up to a final action shot that freezes as the end credits begin to roll. Those are two of the many reasons that Dirty Ho is far better than one might expect from any film with that name.
A classic and must-own for martial arts film fans.......2003-06-30
Gordon Liu plays the comedian, something you haven't seen him do before. This movie is filled with comedic moments and excellent martial arts sequences. The only version I've been able to find is dubbed and has imprinted subtitles in multiple languages. The quality isn't the best, but this movie shines anyway. Don't pass it up--you'll be missing out on one that will likely become a favorite.

5 Stars.......2002-04-16
Definately a must buy for Gordon Liu & Liu Chia Liang fans. Liu Chiang Liang's excellent direction and choreography and Gordon Liu's perfect execution of stealth fighting make watching this film a delight. Wang Yu as the bungling disciple adds some humor to dark tone of the film. Best fight: Gordon Liu versus the art dealer. Funniest scenes: Wang Yu trying to heal his injured head.
Fighting while not fighting. Hilarious!.......2001-12-16
Gordon Liu plays Mr. Wang, an art, jewelry, and wine afficionado who is travelling across China. He encouters Mr. Ho a jewel thief in a crazy party competition (as in who can attract the most girls to their party). These two continue to run into each other. Ho is wanting to get back at Wang, and Wang apparently thinks Ho is amusing. There is more to the plot, but you will have to watch the movie.
The fight scenes were very well done. There was a really cool fight between Ho and Wang where Wang was using a female musician to actually do the battle, but Ho couldn't see what was happening and thought that she was actually very skilled in kung fu. Really well done!
There were a number of encounters between Wang and various assassins. For some reasons these assassins did not just up and start wailing on Wang, they were carrying on normal conversations and steathily fighting under the table. Ho, who was present at these encounters had no idea that Wang was actually fighting! Also very cool!
The sound and video quality was pretty good overall. The dubbed voices were a bit corny in places, but that is to be expected. There was a bit of noise from time to time (it looked like tracking problems from a VHS), but this was on the DVD. Nothing that harmed the movie anyway.
This was a pretty good one if you want to see some unusual hidden combat.

Do not buy this version.......2007-06-06
This is a great movie, but we were unable to see the entire thing because the DVD skipped and stopped toward the end. Unfortunately, it is past the date when we can return the product to Amazon and I can't find any information on how to contact the manufacturer about this. We're calling it a loss and have ordered the Red Sun version from an independant seller.

I rating the movie; please read- it's important that people know........2007-03-26
It's actually 3 1/2 stars from me. But I could of done better with another actor at the time instead of Wang Yu. I love Liu Chia- liang's martial arts choreography in this films first and foremost.
A far as this DVD: I bought this DVD at first as a pre order because I had the Ground Zero version which had (before I threw it away) skips and jumps on the DVD and Amazon {on the Pre- Order} comments mentioned that it had 5.1 surround sound and it was widescreen. Very seductive for a kung fu fan like me to give in, but guess what people- It's the same version as Ground Zero's but the difference is that they (Wu Wei) had rescaled their version (Ground Zero's) to 2:60 instead of the original aspect ratio which was 2:35. Hold on there is more: they rescaled it again to 1:85, so, when you are watching the film- the original aspect ratio {of their version- Wu Wei} is covered by a 1:85 strip. It's horrible. At least Ground Zero's version had better resolution and it was the original 2:35 ratio. Hold on their is more: they copied Ground Zero's version from the VHS copy not the DVD as you can clearly see.
Horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I paid $21 for this... Deltamac or IVL is the way to go Kung fu fans. Also, thanks goodness for Quentin Tarantino and Dragon Dynasty..... they are going to put bootleggers like these people out of business.
Fun Movie; Cruddy DVD.......2005-07-20
This famous Shaw Brothers title is pretty entertaining, but is badly let down by a substandard presentation. It appears to have beenmastered from an old VHS tape, and the picture isfull of tape dropout...add to this the audio anddigital artifacts and you have a most annoyingvideo experience. The fairly high price adds insult to injury; I've bought DVDs for $5.00 thatplay far better. I haven't gotten any discs from this particular company before, and I'm not likelyto do so again...buy if you must, but be forewarned.
