This 1974 feature by Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff) is an equally fascinating and amusing piece of historical lore about three whalers (played by Timothy Bottoms, Warren Oates, and Lou Gossett) marooned on an ice cap in the Canadian Arctic. Rescued by a nomadic Inuit community, the trio gradually becomes a part of its rituals and rhythms, despite their occasional reluctance and exploitative impulses. Kaufman's grasp of the experience of wonder beyond one's usual horizons is as enthralling as his later The Wanderers or The Unbearable Lightness of Being, though the exotica of The White Dawn is craftily cut by the crusty, suspicious performance by Oates (whose character introduces his hosts to alcohol). Bottoms's boyish sentimentality brings some balance to the story, but in the end it's the fateful blending of wildly different cultures that seizes one's imagination. The great cinematography is by Michael Chapman (Taxi Driver). Henry Mancini's memorable score was re-orchestrated and used quite effectively in The Right Stuff. --Tom Keogh
Description
In THE WHITE DAWN, three sailors find their boat capsized while in the arctic hunting for polar bears and walruses. Rescued by Eskimo, the sailors are welcomed into the village and immediately notice that this world is much different from the society they're used to. Daggett (Bottoms), the youngest of the group, adapts to his new style of living, while Billy (Oates) and Portigee (Gossett Jr.) have a much harder time. Without giving up hope of being rescued, they start to bring their own culture into the village, introducing the Eskimos to alcohol and gambling. The Eskimos at first tolerate this behavior, but soon after become angered.

Shock-talk TV host Jerry Springer makes his feature-film debut in Ringmaster and is, unfortunately, the least interesting aspect of this ragtag comedy that purports to be a behind-the-scenes look at the kind of people who regularly appear on his show. To be fair, Springer doesn't have much to do except play the often-befuddled moderator. The only time he breaks loose is to defend his guests' right to air their dirty laundry on national television. But most of the juicy lines and situations are assigned to the competent cast of trailer-park denizens who pop in and out of each other's beds and then go on TV to tell everyone about it. There's a hair-pulling scene about every 10 minutes or so. But unlike the nationally televised syndicated program, there is also a great deal of real nudity and unbleeped profanity. There aren't many surprises here, but the actors are amiable and attractive and don't play down to their characters. For all its raunchiness, Ringmaster doesn't have a mean bone in its body. The DVD is formatted in widescreen. Additional features include the film's trailer, a music video, production information, and a commentary from the director, Neil Abramson. --Richard Natale

Ay Ay Aye...........2007-01-16
Another Round DVD, it plays a movie. If you're seriously interested in this movie, you're probably still using Beta Max tapes...
Just a few remarks from a viewer over in Scandinavia.......2006-06-07
With 49 reviews currently in here, I don't need to go in depth on this one. I am sure that premise, synopsis etc. has been discussed at length by prior reviewers.
This movie happened on me a few days ago, as leaves on trees clouded my sattelite dish and all I could receive was national television channels in Norway (including a couple of commercial ones). I had read nothing about it, and just came across the opening titles as I zapped through the 4 sorry channels at my disposal.
It immediately caught my eye.
I watched it all the way through, promising myself at the very beginning that once this film gets boring or stupid, I'll do what I had previously intented to do, which was watch a DVD I had borrowed from a friend. At no point during the film did I feel the urge to stop watching.
Obviously, a lot of people will thrash a movie like this. It's main charachters engage in lewd, obscene and morally questionable acts all the way throughout the film. Many people will be put off by this nasty and/or downright trashy behaviour, but it resonnated with me.
I know people like this. I have at least one friend who has slept with bot mother and daughter in some backwaters place in Florida. I have at least one ex-girlfriend who has done a guy that also her mother has done. And as to this x-gf; the things she put me through, would have been solid Jerry Springer and/or Ricki Lake show, had we had those in Scandinavia. And she had similar stories with most other boyfriends she had done. I'd compare her with the trailer trash daughter in this movie without a second of hesitation. According to the eyes of the beholder, she could be either slightly more or slightly less sexy than this charachter in "Ringmaster".
After seeing it, I conferred with my Video & DVD guide, a book from 2003 (paperback). It awarded the film with a turkey symbol, and discarded it as pure and utter sleaze. Well, this particular paperback has families as target audiences, but still, that was too easy a dismissal. I couldn't quite believe that everybody would miss the point completely, and later conferred with Rottentomatoes.com. It didn't have a 0% fresh rating, as one might expect. Instead it had an 18% fresh rating. Most memorably, Roger Ebert, arguably America's (and perhaps the world's) finest movie critic, awarded it two - 2 - out of four possible stars, and provided a decent and just comment on it.
But Ebert probably never experienced people and/or conditions like these in his own life. Had he had such experiences, I believe he would have awarded it three stars.
I give it four out of five stars. I don't see how a movie like this one could have been made much more realistically. The finish is very much like that of a TV movie, but I gather that it was in wide theatrical release. I believe the TV movie finish is justifiable, as these are NOT larger-than-life charachters on display here. On the contrary, they are everyday people of the somewhat less fortunate kind, and should be portrayed as such.
This story is not earth-shattering. It is pretty much a feel-good film, and has no big central theme that is intended to be revelatory or remarkably uplifting. It is a movie that paints probably a quite fair picture of both ex-politician (mayor of Cincinnati, was he?) -turned-talk-show-host Jerry Springer, and of the knd of people who one would think constitutes a mean average of the ususal fair he and his TV show collaborators and henchmen deal with on a daily basis.
For the sake of entertainment, the charachters are to varying degrees more animated than one would expect from such a demographic, and maybe in some instances slightly less. Like Ebert states, the actors mostly do a fine job of portraying their charachters in a decent but somewhat superficial manner (this IS a comedy-drama, not pure comedy or pure parody), and no charachter is taken to the level of ridicule and/or outright parody.
We can empathize with these people - or at least we can if we have actual real life experience that compels us to believe that these people could be for real. (If one reflects upon it, an all-out-realistic and down to the nitty-gritty movie about people from these demographics, could just as well have played as Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers"; all-be-it at the opposite and most extreme end of the scale of mild-to-excessive portrayal of the denizens of trailer parks and such).
There are touching moments, such as the very plausible emptyness, lonelyness and doubts felt by the trailer park mother when she is all alone in her hotel room.
I can recommend this movie. It's not Saturday night fare or a "date movie". It's something you could watch on your laptop while on a Greyhound-bus or an interstate train. It's something to watch in your dorm room on a night that your schedule is empty, or if you're in sick from work with the flu. It won't change your life, but it'll be a whole lot more easy-going on your senses than actually watching an episode of the televised Jerry Springer show... Where the TV-show is chaotic and in-your-face, this little flick gives you enough background to actually empathize, more or less understand and possibly even believe the "guests" Springer has on his usual shows.
No small feat that.
Garbage.......2006-01-04
If you live in a mobile home, have to drive an old car with no wheel covers, do your laundry at a laundomat, or have a menial job such as operating a lunchwagon or cleaning motel rooms --- and you enjoy being mocked for it by a millionaire opportunist ---- then this movie is for you! This film exploits and is insulting to the black culture, women, members of broken homes, homosexuals, poor people, the religiously chaste, et al. Alas, we are all just a bunch of voyeuristic trash . . . except for Jerry Springer. Jerry, of course, is totally balanced but slightly befuddled as chaos reigns around him. BALONEY. He attepts to redeem himself near the close by browbeating a "religious fanatic" in the audience in defense of his guests. Then the teary-eyed closing scenes which suggest that "poor trailer trash people" might actually have some positive values and emotions (OH, REALLY?!). This guy is a parasite.
Tha White Trash Talk Show Host!.......2005-11-06
This is 1 funny-ass movie, I watched in the summer when I was watching Comedy Central, I was already a fan of Jerry Springer & his show, yet I just weared to him because all of his episode were the same, till' I saw Ring Master!!!!!
This is a tight-ass White trash movie, about a strugglin' couple that live in a Trailer Park, in somewhere in Tampa Bay, FL......where this 1 Hoe with a nice Ass pretends that her own Dad got her prgenant, and her own Mom plays along, while her Boyfriend is confused & opressed! They make it to the Jerry Springer show, where they have to take a plane from Tampa Bay, FL to Los Angeles, CA! Now, lots goes on in this movie and it is Trailer Park madness! Lots of Fyne hoochies, and plenty of Booty-tang 2! Jerry Springer-4-Life!
Amazingly Trashy From 1998.......2005-03-22
People having sordid affairs appear with their loved ones on a talk-show host's popular, controversial TV program. Very trashy. Jerry Springer plays himself. I can't believe that he was going to campaign for US Senator. This is like the TV show, except the guests in this movie are actors.

Best of Tony Hillerman's - to date!.......2005-11-29
Personally, I found this film ... out of the current films based on Tony Hillerman's books the best of the films! However, I suggest anyone thinking about buying ... and not having seen any of the 3 films released to date ... (see these films first) ... otherwise you maybe dissapointed.
I have seen all 3 films ... and, have read the other reviews here posted which I might add, all have valid pro's & con's about made about this film that are helpful. They do not though mention how this film breaks out -of the box- compared to the others, in that it uses a HISTORICAL angle in it's script touching on the 'Anasazi culture' and 'Chaco Canyon' which was refreshing to me ... in that I find history interesting especially in relation to Native American Indian history.
(If you feel the same way, and think you might like one of the Hillerman based movies mentioned in reviews here - this maybe the one out of the 3 movie/DVDs for you). Then again you may not want any of -or- want all of them?
Major Mystery Transformed into Movie Disappointment .......2005-05-25
I have read each and every Tony Hillerman mystery and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Likewise, I eagerly awaited this DVD, A Thief of Time. Unfortunately, I cannot say anything very good about it. Unlike the many (read British) PBS series that have dramatized great detective novels into entertaining movies, this installment in the initial "American Mystery" series is a hopeless dud.
Tony Hillerman writes a rich, vivid novel in the nuance of the Navajo culture. His details and characters are too much for a 93 minute DVD to digest. Scenes flit around in small one and three minute sequences, disjointed and disorganized. Hillerman's plot device of having parallel plot lines join at the end create too many complexities for a rushed presentation.
I deeply regret the disservice to a wonderful author and mystery novel, and frankly wish I could say something more positive. Well....let's try...the Four Corners scenery is beautiful.
Thief Of Time is time well spent........2005-04-20
I'm a fan of Tony Hillerman, having read most of his books. Frankly, I'm surprised at the middling ratings most people have given this movie. I thought it was wonderful, and the performances given by the cast were very satisfying. It's always a treat to watch a cast like this. My eyes are likely to brighten when I see the names Graham Greene, Wes Studi, Adam Beach and Tantoo Cardinal participating in a movie venture. I have added Sheila Tonsey and others to this last as well, having greatly enjoyed their roles in this series. Graham Greene has given another unforgettable performance as the oily Slick Nakai. I have to believe that he's now in my top five American actors. Tantoo gave a brief but typically engaging perfomance. Wes and Adam are now locked in my minds eye as Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn. It was good seeing Peter Fonda again in is role. Chris Eyre did a fine job directing, and conveying the intent of the novel. Included is an engaging bonus feature with Tony Hillerman.
The review below me made some defamatory comments intending to be caustic, but which are patently untrue. Any resemblance to a soap opera has entirely escaped me. His observation that this movie sneers at Navajo attitudes toward the dead, Navajo spiritual or cultural matters, is impossible. Anyone who is acquainted with Chris Eyre knows the integrity of the director, having directed Smoke Signals and Skins, and has shown is dedication toward negating stereotypes and prejudice. Seems that the reviewer below was just looking for an opportunity to flog around the term "injun". People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, and the below reviewer might be concerned that his education has failed him. Moreover, keep your eyes on Chris Eyre, who promises to be attached to quality movies in the future.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and hope to see more. I will continue to devour anything written by Tony Hillerman, and seek out anything by these cast members.
My thanks are to Robert Redford as a co-producer of this series. I have admired the integrity of this man for quite some time, watching him place his effort and resources in the right place, time and time again. I tip my hat once again to PBS Pictures for distributing this series. PBS has been involved in offering us quality which is hard to find.
PowWow In the Ivory Tower.......2005-03-18
Take a novel. Hand it to an inexperienced script-writer who only knows genre dialogue, and has never been outside the soap opera community. Make a movie or a tv show that ignores the original audience because the script-writer doesn't read books. So instead of the tongue-in-cheek dry dialogue of a Tony Hillerman, you get a stilted cliche As The World Turns with Injun cops. And I use the word "Injun" advisedly. The sneering at the Navajo attitude toward the dead, and at their culture is unbelieveably crass. And the writing down for an American audience -- well, perhaps our reputation for a trashed educational system is getting too well recognized in the world.
Great Mystery.......2004-11-08
I cannot agree with the negative reviewers. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, like I did the two previous ones in this series. I love mystery novels/films, and this one was not difficult to comprehend at all. An added bonus is the setting of the story in the for me - a European living in the US - completely new world of Native American history and culture. I don't know the novels of Mr. Hillerman, so I don't have the great expectations of someone who has read them. I think anybody who loves a good mystery and is interested in getting an introduction into Native American lore and culture of the Southwest should enjoy the movies in this series. I certainly hope there will be more of them.

"Rage at Dawn (1955) ... Randolph Scott ... RKO Pictures Classic Westerns".......2007-04-10
RKO Pictures presents "RAGE AT DAWN" (1955) (87 mins/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring Randolph Scott, Forrest Tucker, Mala Powers, J. Carrol Naish & Edgar Buchanan --- Directed by Tim Whelan and released in March 26, 1955, our story line and film, Terrorizing 1866 Indiana, the Reno brothers use the town of Seymour as a safe haven, paying off three crooked town officials. Sent in to clean up the gang is Peterson Detective Agency operative James Barlow, who poses as an outlaw to gain the confidence of the officials and the Renos ... Complicating matters are Barlow's feelings for the Reno sister, Laura, who reluctantly keeps house for the boys out of family loyalty, events heat up and rage surfaces as Barlow sets up the gang in a dawn train robbery --- from the book "Seven Bad Men" by author Frank Gruber --- Scott's presence carried many a mediocre western and, with interesting actors supporting him like Forrest Tucker, J. Carrol Naish, Denver Plye and Edgar Buchanan it's a winner --- The film is shot in California State parks as is reflected on the coloristic cinematography by the cameraman Ray Rennahan, with storyline by Horace McCoy and Frank Gruber, two wonderful screenwriters ... the film is splendidly directed by Tim Whelan --- this will satisfy western lovers and Randolph Scott fans alike.
Under Tim Whelan (Director), Nat Holt (Producer), Frank Gruber (Short Story Author), Horace McCoy (Screenwriter), Ray Rennahan (Cinematographer), Paul Sawtell (Musical Direction/Supervision / Composer (Music Score), Harry Marker (Editor), Walter E. Keller (Art Director) - - - - the cast includes Randolph Scott (James Barlow), Forrest Tucker (Frank Reno), Mala Powers (Laura Reno), J. Carrol Naish (Sim Reno), Denver Pyle (Clint Reno), Myron Healey (John Reno), Edgar Buchanan (Judge Hawkins), Ray Teal (Constable Brant), William Forrest (Amos Peterson), Trevor Bardette (Fisher), Kenneth Tobey (Monk Claxton), Chubby Johnson (Hyronemus), Richard Garland (Bill Reno), Howard Petrie (Lattimore) - - - - Randy Scott had a quiet gentleman nature about him which is not seen in the films of today ... Randy took his job and his responsibility to his audience very seriously ,,, would not settle for anything less than his best ... same was true in his personal life.
SPECIAL FEATURES BIOS:
1. Randolph Scott (aka: George Randolph Scott)
Date of birth: 23 January 1898 - Orange County, Virginia
Date of death: 2 March 1987 - Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California
Special footnote, George Randolph Scott better known as Randolph Scott, was an American film actor whose career spanned the sound era from the late 1920s to the early 1960s ... his popularity grew in the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in such films as "Gung Ho"! (1943) and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1938); but he was especially famous for his numerous Westerns including "Virginia City" (1940) with Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart, "Western Union" (1941) with Robert Young and "Ride the High Country" (1962) with Joel McCrea (a coin was flipped to see whether Scott or McCrea would receive top billing, and Scott won despite having a slightly smaller role) ... his long fistfight with John Wayne in "The Spoilers" (1942) was frequently cited by critics and the press as the most thrilling ever filmed; they were fighting over Marlene Dietrich ... another smash hit film together that same year called "Pittsburgh" (1942) once again with Dietrich, Scott and Wayne --- Daniel Webster defines "Legend", as being a notable person, or the stories told about that person exploits --- well by the time Randolph Scott made his best films he had long established himself as a legend in the film industry --- they say practice makes perfect, if that is true by 1958 at 60 years of age he was the master with these oaters from the 50s ... Carrol Naish) pretends to be drunk in the local saloon letting out false information to the bartender Murphy (Arthur Space) They discover that he is a Peterson agent, they captured tied him up in a stable, Frank Reno (Forrest Tucker) then proceeds to set the barn alight the Peterson man with it!
At the head office of The Peterson National Detective Agency in Chicago agent Monk Claxton (Kenneth Tobey) and told of the death of the Peterson man at Seymour he is then told he is to work with a new man special agent Jim Barlow (Randolph Scott) Petersons arrange for Barlow to rob a train so as to allow to infiltrate the Reno gang while Claxton stays on the outside as the contact man. On arrival in Seymour, Barlow makes a play for Laura Reno (Mala Powers) Later he also meets Clint Reno (Denver Pyle) who is a law-abiding citizen. Later, with difficulty he works his way in with the rest of the Reno brothers. A bank hold-up is carried out to establish Barlow's credentials followed by a set up train robbery - A violent shoot-out at the robbery followed by Barlow, Laura and Clint trying to thwart a lynch mob in North Vernon as we head towards "rage at dawn" (which refers to the films conclusion).
This RKO 87 minute western was director Tim Wheelan's penultimate film taken from a fact-based Frank Gruber story with screenplay by Horace McCoy. It has an excellent supporting cast which is necessary as Scott doesn't even appear until the film is some twenty minutes or so old. Now in the public domain (out of copyright) RAGE AT DAWN has been around for a few years on DVD and it can be found just about anywhere in various guises (packaging) and in Box Western Sets. I now see that a widescreen format is also available. I can only comment on my copy, which shows the same picture on the DVD case as the one on the Amazon site, sadly the transfer is poor which may just be due to the source movie, whatever it spoils a pretty good Scott western. Hence only three stars!
Rage at Dawn.......2007-01-09
This is a well done movie that is a true story of The Reno Brothers....outlaws. It is perfected by the star....Randolph Scott, as the under cover lawman, who brings the outlaws to justice.
There are much better Scott films.......2006-06-28
I have liked most of the Scott films, but this I found a rather tedious film. Scott just follows the gang and does not do much. The story is very predictable. Rather, look for the Boetticher films.
Good Randolph Scott Western.......2005-06-21
Rage at Dawn is a good 1955 Western starring Randolph Scott as an undercover government agent who infiltrates the notorious Reno brothers gang. Scott (who was usually pretty good, but rarely great) gives one of his better performances in Rage, as all of his charm and personality comes shining through. Like many stars of that era who (to some degree) played variations on the same character for much of their careers (John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, to name a few) Randolph Scott found his niche in Westerns and it fit him like a glove.
While Rage at Dawn isn't an award winning movie, it is very entertaining, and a good example of 1950's moviemaking. The supporting cast is solid, and features a spirited performance from the late Denver Pyle. If Westerns are your cup of tea you could do a lot worse than to pick up Rage at Dawn.
Roan's DVD is actually pretty good. Sure, there is the common film reel "wobble" at the beginning, and there is plenty of dust and debris on this print, but the colors are still pretty good, and it is shown in anamorphic widescreen (unlike all the other versions of this movie on DVD). The picture is a little soft, but still not too bad considering its age. The sound is a bit muffled, but still listenable (I've heard a lot worse). While this may not be a shining example of an anamorphic widescreen DVD it is more than passable for a public domain movie from the 1950's. This would seem to be the best version of Rage at Dawn currently available.

A Great Finsh To The Pusser Story.......2007-02-24
This was the final chapter of Walking Tall the life of Sheriff Buford Pusser. Bo Svensen returns to play the role of Sheriff Buford Pusser, Lurene Tuttle plays the role of Grandma Pusser, and Forrest Tucker plays the role of Grandpa Pusser. When the picture ended the last time Pusser had just finished of the last man that was involved in killing his wife. Pusser term as Sheriff is coming to an end and now he has a new challenger. Pusser looses the election and now is unemployed. He turns to buying junk cars and fixes them up to be sold. In the mean time Pusser tries to get on with the highway patrol but is ****** ****. When things get bad a movie director comes calling and wants to make a Hollywood production out of his life. Pusser agrees but he's got more problems then he realizes. I give this movie 5 weasel stars because of the suspense that keeps watching the picture and the action. You can get all three films in DVD right here on Amazon.Com
End of the Road.......2006-09-26
The second Walking Tall ends with a notice that Sheriff Buford was killed in an auto accident. This third one picks up earlier in the story though. He is still adamant about getting the people who killed his wife and the Mob is still bent on getting the sheriff but Buford has a problem. He has lost his job as sheriff.
The job loss comes about for several reasons. In some cases, Buford is scene as having gone too far outside the legal boundaries. This happens even when his solutions make life easier for everyone, including the perpetrators. The people of his county also seem a bit jaded by continued success. Where they once cheered him, now they are not ready to support him.
The loss of his job means that Buford has to go after justice as a private citizen and he is well on his way to the poorhouse in pursuing his aims. The new sheriff is suspicious of him and is fearful that Buford might become a problem for him. It begins to look like he might have to move away with his business unfinished when he gets a lucky break.
A Hollywood producer learns of his story and wants to make a movie about him. That brings in money and a chance for achieving his goals. The mob leader with a taste for vengeance finally gets his chance and we learn the story of the end of the former Sheriff of McNairy County.
This one is better than the second but not as good as the first.
the first Walking Tall was best but..........2004-12-14
Walking Tall - the Final Chapter has an ending that breaks my heart. VERY MOVING AND TRAGIC. Svenson does another fine job conveying integrity and a hunger for justice.

very strong film.......2007-02-08
this film is very real as it deals with a Prisoner played by Hill Harper who is dying from Aids. Harper is a Very Good Actor. Billy Dee Wlliams does a very Good Job playing Harper's Father in the film. Phylicia Rashad does a strong job as well. very Good Writing, Directing, Pacing&overall chemistry on a film that is a must see.
hill harper is so intense.......2006-11-27
get this, do not watch it alone, it so emotional!
hill harper is so intensely understated it gave me goosebumps. very rare a film goes along that its subject matter is so lost in the fine writing and directing and acting. originally a stage play, this was set to the big screen but it only played the film fests.
critically acclaimed, hill lost weight to look like an aids-infected prisoner estanged from his father billy dee williams. coming to terms with an emphathetic phylicia rashad reconnecting with obba and rae dawn, this movie was just what the doctor ordered.
a fine cast assembled, great directing/writing, excellent story, couln't ask for more
A story for any family dealing with forgiveness.......2005-03-18
Dealing with family and forgiveness is one of the hardest and most humbling things we all, as humans, go through in life. This story shows how this one man, who is dying and is in prison, not only tortures himself because of anger, love and forgiveness, but how his family and friends support, and at times don't support his journey. If you are looking for a story with raw emotions, hard cold truths, and saving love, this is the story for you. It applies to us all as humans as it erases the differences of race or color and deals with the heart.
The acting in this movie is superb. Hill Harper and Billy Dee Williams have outdone themselves again.
Jordan Walker-Pearlman has taken this play and has shown us all this valuable life lesson on film. I expect great things from Jordan in the future and anxiously await them. You have my support.
Bear's take on The Visit.......2005-01-31
I am a Black African from South Africa and like movies in general but I am an avid supporter of Black Amarican movies. This was a very good movie with superb acting by all. This movie for me was a fresh change from movies like Boys 'n the Hood, Best Man, Love Jones etc. Don't get me wrong, these movies hold their own in their respective genres and I love them. It's just that seeing Hill Harper giving such a powerful, convincing portrayal of inmate Alex Waters dying of AIDS made me respect him even more as an actor. In fact i regretted buying his other movie Loving Jezebel. I know the genre is different but I still think that The Visit is a better movie both in terms of material and Hill Harper's acting. Having said that, the performance by the entire cast (Rae dawn Chong, Obba Babatunde, Phylicia Rashad, Marla Gibbs and Billy Dee Williams) was excellent.
I really welcome movies like this, movies that tackle social issues experienced by real people and at the same time provide actors with serious roles with depth. Keep up the good work
Simangele Mkhize, Westville, South Africa.
Transformation.......2005-01-01
Although I missed the beginning of The Visit ,I found it filled with powerful acting and a story of transformation. How did I miss this? It was released in 2001. What else is out there?

Don't judge a book..........2007-04-21
If I had come across this movie on the shelf at the video store, I would have not just passed it by but avoided it overtly. It has the stupidest DVD cover ever. Which is ironic considering the lead character's line of work.
I gave it a chance for a couple of reasons. For one, I am always searching for the ultimate Annabeth Gish vessel, and for two, it had a solid romantic premise.
Regarding point number one, this is, in my opinion, definately the "one." As you may recall, Annabeth had a few hits in the 80s and then kind of fell off the map, fame-wise, after that. It's an absolute shame, really.
The fact is, she is brilliant at what she does -- heart rending emotions and gleaming charm. She does not disappoint in this movie. Her character is constantly making you want to reach through the screen and hug her. Thankfully she has her best friend of many years to do that for us. And for that perfect reason, this movie has officially ascended to one of my favorites - certainly within the ranks of Annabeth Gish's filmography.
If you can look past the annoying characterization of Amy Jo Johnson's role, the movie is absolutely worth at least one viewing, if not several.
Supermarket-quality movie.......2006-09-10
I first saw this movie on TV (early morning),and wasn't surprised to later see it at a supermarket checkout line.
Frank Whaley plays a schlub who's considering working for 'Playboy' (a scary thought, this movie giving fear a new name),and who may (or may not)be in love with Annabeth Gish, his childhood sweetheart. The story is needlessly confusing, but you know the two will come together because they're meant for each other.Awwwwww....
Mediocre writing & direction.......2006-06-10
I like romantic comedies in general, even some that I recognize as being formulaic, but I didn't like this movie. The weaknesses were immediately apparent--awkward dialogue, lack of visual style--but I hoped the movie would overcome its faults. It didn't. Unlike, for example, Wedding for Bella, which had some similar shortcomings and obvious outcomes, this movie never made me care about the lead characters--they were two-dimensional sketches rather than fleshed-out characters. I liked Amy Jo Johnson, although being a 30-year-old playing "the teenager" suggests a reason for her undistinguished career, and I liked Liz Vassey who was also relaxed in her character rather than awkwardly acting a part. Otherwise, nothing to see here. Move along.
A SUPERB OLD FASHION ROMANTIC COMEDY.......2005-05-07
"Pursuit of Happiness" is a superb old fashion romantic comedy film. Actors are really good, especially I liked Annabeth Gish very much. She is a talented, beautiful and smart actress. It seems to be a simple romantic movie but it is much more than that. The perfect atmosphere of the movie can make you feel a lot of different emotions. It shows me a lot of truth that I was not aware of. It shows that the job, money, carrer and things like that are not really important. The important thing is to aware of the day, love the day, seize the day and just be happy because there are somebody around you that loves you whatever you are or you will become. If you want to watch a good film, feel wondeful things and see good acting, I suggest this film strongly.
Good offbeat comedy. Worth a rental .......2005-01-14
The Pursuit of Happiness is a light romantic comedy about a man who is dissatisfied with his life. He thinks changing his job and relationships will make things better but winds up in more misery. It's not until the end of the movie that he realizes the things that make him happy are right in front of him. Most will want to see this movie for Amy Jo Johnson, TV's "Pink Ranger" but the other actors in this entertaining film give great performances in this fun movie.

Customer Reviews:
Where's the ending?.......2007-02-12
Having just viewed this film on DVD I have to say the acting, directing, on-location photography are all superb. No need to go into commenting of the storyline since other viewers have already done so.
However, from the other reviews, and coupled with one of the special features on the DVD it's apparent something is wrong with the DVD or just my copy.
My copy ends right after the young eskimo girl crawls into the snow, drunk and half-nude, then segues into the cast credits. The one feature shows several scenes which plainly take place after that, when justice is meted out to the sailors.
The entire story is logical and can do nothing but end in tragedy for all concerned, the Eskimos included. In the case of my DVD ending without the ending which should be there it's a sore disappointment. I'm now going to have to buy a VHS tape so I can view the conclusion.
I'd advise others to be careful in purchasing the DVD. It doesn't seem logical that there would be a handful of copies which were made without the movie's conclusion although anything is possible. I can say that viewing the movie without its conclusion is extremely frustating.
A film lost in time.......2006-06-29
The White Dawn was a film both ahead of and behind its time. In the early 70s a film about the fatal culture clash between three stranded whalers (Warren Oates, Lou Gosset and Timothy Bottoms) and a tribe of Inuits at the turn of the 20th Century was too early for the eco-friendly green lobby and far too late for either the hippies or the slew of early pseudo-documentary adventures like Nanook of the North and Men of Two Worlds, although a fight with a polar bear did manage to infuriate animal rights activists despite the animal being rather too-obviously unharmed. The film made barely a ripple at the box-office or with the critics before quietly disappearing and causing Paramount to cancel Philip Kaufman's intended follow-up for the studio, a Star Trek movie spin-off
Being a Kaufman film, the emphasis is on an alien, more spiritual way of life rather than high adventure as the trio of "dog-children" bring their saviors nothing but bad luck, their not necessarily hostile inability to understand and abide by a different set of cultural and moral values ultimately corrupting their hosts and ending in an uncharacteristic act of premeditated violence (the moral of the tale: never accept a pair of mittens from an Inuit). There IS a certain element of contrivance underpinning the story, most notably their conflict with a hostile travelling Shaman, but the film generally manages to avoid National Geographic voyeurism and patronising melodrama, taking its pace from the seasons and the move from hunting ground to hunting ground. Unlike The Savage Innocents and its all-too-obvious studio shooting and dubbing, it also benefits immensely from being shot entirely on location with non-professional actors.
Yet despite the strong visuals, in many ways the real star of the film is Henry Mancini's astonishingly beautiful score. A world away from the easy listening elevator musak he's now associated with, the style is closer to his lyrical score for The Molly Maguires without the melancholy, although the main theme was expanded from a piece an Inuit woman improvised on the set. Never released on record aside from a couple of extracts on Mancini compilation albums, Kaufman reused the lyrical theme for the orbiting the Earth sequence in The Right Stuff. It's a shame Paramount didn't include an isolated score on the DVD, although it does at least come with a couple of interesting featurettes and a commentary by Kaufman.
Fascinating Anthropological Study.......2005-12-05
This film, based on James A. Houston's fine book, is a fascinating glimpse into the Inuit way of life. The Inuit (commonly known as the Eskimo) culture remained unchanged for thousands of years but,as with all Native American people, thier culture rapidly became threatned once Europeans arrived onto the continent. Enough has been said about the plot, so I will just tell you that there is tremendous value watching the Inuit using ancient skills developed for hunting, killing and building igloos that are necessary to survive in the unforgiving environment on Earth. This film invites you into their intimate family life and reveals a clash of cultures that will haunt you for some time. The three lead American actors give a fine performance, but it is the Inuit people who are the true stars of this film.
Oh what a jip.......2004-08-25
And here I was hoping this was a sequel to RED DAWN.
But nope here you get a movie about violence which doesnt show any!
Luv Mom
Surprisingly good.......2004-04-07
This story of three sailors marooned on the ice who were rescued and taken in by the Inuits reminded me of something I read in my cultural anthropology class in college, and was one reason I was interested in the movie. In the readings for the class I came across a statement that occasionally sailors on whaling ships in the 19th century would jump ship and go to live with the Eskimos, where, except for the rigors of arctic living, their new lives among the Inuit seemed far preferable to what they had left. Many of them took Eskimo wives and stayed the rest of their lives with their adoptive tribes. So I was interested to see how the movie might portray such a story.
The three sailors in this story, however, aren't so lucky. After their good fortune of being rescued and taken in by the generous and well-meaning Eskimos, things gradually turn sour from there. In contrast to the innocent and generous-to-a-fault Eskimos, the sailors are exploitative, deceptive, and manipulative of their Inuit hosts. After stealing a canoe in an abortive and ill-fated attempt to return to civilization, they're again rescued by the Eskimos and returned to the village. Instead of learning their lesson, the three sailors begin to cause even more trouble for their new tribe.
At this point it becomes clear that in the clash of the two cultures we have an unavoidable tragedy in the making, and that it's only a matter of time before something terrible happens. Then during a bout of drinking a young Eskimo girl becomes intoxicated and crawls off into the snow, where she freezes to death. That's just the beginning of the end, however, and I won't mention anything else in the way of a spoiler, so you'll have to see the movie to see how it all turns out, but the movie builds from there to the final, tragic climax.
Bottoms, Oates, and Gossett are all excellent in their roles, and the Eskimo actors also did an impressive job with their parts and were very believable. There are also some memorable scenes, such as when the small Eskimo kills a huge polar bear with his spear on the ice floe. Overall, a fine flick that is all the more poignant considering the eventual destructive impact of European and U.S. civilization on the Eskimos.

Anything With Ross Hagen And Robbie The Robot Will Be Excellent, I'm Sure..........2006-12-22
This is a cheapie starring legendary B-movie icon Ross Hagen as a master spelunker, scream queen Michelle Bauer as a "cave bunny," and Sybil Danning as an alien queen. The plot is almost unbearably silly: some explorers and scientists go on a trek to the center of the Earth, where they discover a land of luscious prehistoric cave bunnies who can't speak a word, but who have crafted rather nice bikinis for themselves. The cave bunnies are entangled with a group of underground mutant cannibals (I never knew that when you roasted a live human female on a spit that you left her swimsuit on, removing only the jeans...) and the three parties spend the first half of the film chasing each other around the caves until a laser-wielding Robbie the Robot turns up to try to stop the fight, though he is defeated by the makeup mirror in a woman's compact. (Really. Don't ask.)
Eventually the explorers plus cave bunny Bauer emerge from the cave in (of course) a land that time forgot featuring an evil, but busty alien queen, Sybil Danning, in the most ludicrous vehicle I have seen in a long time. From then on there is a three way struggle featuring the explorers, the Queen and her minions, and stop motion dinosaurs clearly lifted from another movie (I believe they are from the same source as was seen in the altogether more entertaining "Galaxy of the Dinosaurs.") They chase each other around the desert, wrestle, and encounter a volcano (more stock footage) before ultimately carjacking the Queen's vehicle, blowing it up in a cave, and finding themselves free on the other side of the cave with millions worth of diamonds they discovered in the desert. Confused? You will be.
This is essentially low-budget monster movie mayhem, and as such is camp of the highest order. It is stupid, but cheesily fun. I recommend it only to people who like campy, trashy mindlessly silly pictures starring yesterday's favorites from the B-movie circuit. The DVD has several extras including a commentary, and a sometimes (though mostly not) amusing introduction from Director Fred Olen Ray; this is part of his "Nite Owl Theater" series, which I hope he continues in the same spirit of Joe Bob Briggs. The drive in will live forever!
What more could you want?.......2006-07-16
This movie has everything: lost underground "civilisations", cave mutants, bikini clad cave bunnies, Barbeque Girl, Robbie the Robot (back after all these years with a new head and available for rent, cheap), dinosaurs, a spaceship, topless catfighting, swordplay, laserbolts, stock footage of a volcano and Sybil Danning bounding about in, and almost out of, very tight leather. It just keeps rollicking along.
Who cares if it doesn't have a believable plot, a good script or decent acting? If you want a decent laugh listen to the director's commentary and the interviews. Shot in about six days on virturally no budget, nobody took this seriously, and neither should you.
The eye-candy keeps improving as the movie progresses, too. Somebody in Hollywood must have made a fortune making bikinis for movies like this. And Sybil Danning, almost busting out, bounds gleefully around the set, swinging a sword, glowering imperiously down her nose and trying not to laugh as she delivers her lines. Sybil, the Mistress of the Master Race (she is Austrian) plays the Alien Queen. (In this one they didn't let her carry a whip, but at the bequest of the other women on the set she punched out the leading actor.) She is tall, athletic, gorgeous and sexy, which makes her one of my favourite actresses. Who cares if she didn't have to act? I've seen her act in other movies, but in this one, she just doesn't have to.
If you want a movie with reasonable T&A, a fast pace, a bit of a laugh and which requires no use of the grey matter at all, I recommend this. If you want a good movie, forget it.

Not very good. Not even quite a horror film........2006-11-26
I wouldn't even call this a horror film. Horror requires some "unnatural threat." Something mysterious and larger than life. What made HALLOWEEN a horror film is that Michael Meyers wouldn't die.
SANTA CLAWS is more akin to THE TOOLBOX MURDERS and MANIAC and VISITING HOURS (although not as "slick") in that we see the killer right away, and we see that he's a seedy and pathetic little man. So he lacks the awesome power of a Michael Meyers or Jason Vorhees.
SANTA CLAWS is also not a horror film in that about half the film (and it's a short 82 minutes) is just various women posing semi-nude for the camera. The story is about an obsessed fan (Grant Kramer) who kills everyone around this horror-porn movie actress (Debbie Rochon). So we spend much time at the porn studio watching various actresses being filmed topless. If that's what you want, great, but know that this is as much a soft-core porn film as horror.
Not much story (what porn film has a substantive story?). The acting is uniformly bad. The "walls" wobble when struck -- we also glimpse where the tops of these "walls" end. And the special effects are laughably poor. Unlike many slashers, this killer sticks to only one implement, a relatively mild-looking garden rake. He hits people with it, leaving small red dots, which we're supposed to think are gashes. Doesn't look it.
Debbie Rochon bears some resemblance to Parker Posey, though without the talent. Grant Kramer evokes Chris Elliott, though not as funny. All the actresses in this film appear to have massive breast implants.
Certainly there are many better "killer Santa" films. While SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT has historically garnered the most attention, I'd say that CHRISTMAS EVIL is the most inspired and thought-provoking, while DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS is a personal favorite.
I'm giving SANTA CLAWS a generous two stars because I'm a fan of both Chris Elliott and Parker Posey.
A FUN FLICK.......2004-10-06
This is a fun slasher flick which doesn't take itself to seriously. It has a wicked sense of humor and not only features the skewering of murder victims but it skewers the film industry too. It's not for everybody and those who dislike slashers should stay away, but for the rest of us there's a lot to like about this movie. The cast and writing are both on target and if you "get" these types of films you should definitely get Santa Claws.
You'd better watch out--Santa Claws is coming to town.......2003-02-20
Ah, Christmas and psychopathic, murderous, obsessed movie star fans-you can hardly think of one without the other. It's the holidays, but no one is having a holly, jolly Christmas. B movie scream queen Raven Quinn (Debbie Rochon)-zoologist, scream queen, wife, and mother-has just had a fight with her husband, and he is threatening to divorce her once he gets back home from an out-of-town photo shoot. Her in-laws despise her because of her body-baring film career (although they have no problem with her husband photographing naked women in his job). The only person she can turn to is her ingratiatingly nice neighbor Wayne (Grant Kramer). What she does not know is that Wayne is completely obsessed with her, maintaining a Raven shrine inside his house. With her marriage on the rocks, he thinks the time is right to make his move. Now, Wayne has some problems; just ask his mother and uncle-oh, wait, you can't ask them because he shot them to death as a young teenager. He wants Raven all to himself, and this raging desire compels him to murder everyone who might get in his way. By the time the end game rolls around, Wayne has transformed himself into the dastardly Santa Claws, and he decides who has been naughty and who has been nice.
Obviously, this is a low-budget B-movie production. Some effort went into making the film, but there's no mistaking its origins. The acting is quite bad at times, although I think Debbie Rochon puts in a better than average performance as Raven; the sets are sadly unimpressive, especially the furnishings in Debbie's home (she and her husband could certainly have afforded better furniture); and the accompanying music is oftentimes just a step above elevator muzak, although I do give the filmmakers credit for attempting to insert relevant songs to accompany the story as it progresses-the intent was there, but apparently the money was not. Grant Kramer gives an inconsistent performance as the serial killer and Raven fanatic Wayne, and this limits the effectiveness of this movie to some degree. It can be rather painful to watch him sitting before his shrine confessing his love for Raven, but he comes across pretty well in those scenes requiring him to be psychotically angry and frustrated. I must also mention the murder weapon of choice here-it is a little plastic set of claws that wouldn't scare a child in the middle of a graveyard on Halloween night. This little toy is quite deadly in Wayne's hands, though. What I found really funny was the appearance of the murder victims after the fact; someone basically just took fake blood and daubed a few spots here and there on the bodies.
Certainly, there are problems with this movie. I for one am still confused about one particular sequence wherein several scenes seemed to be presented in the wrong order. I have to admit, though, that I really did enjoy watching Santa Claws. I would have enjoyed it even more if, instead of having to watch the shadow of the claws rise and fall against the wall, I had been allowed to actually witness the brutal murders as they took place-there is really no blood and gore to speak of here.
An Interesting Story........2002-05-25
I thought this film had a great premise and I enjoyed the two lead performances; Raven and Wayne. It focuses a little too long on the nudity, but an interesting commentary piece on the B movie industry.
Santa Claws is great B movie filmaking!!.......2002-04-09
This movie is hilarious! And the funny thing is that the original cast members of night of the living dead are in it making it even better! John Russo directed this flick and many other movies like midnight 2, heartstopper, majorettes, and night of the living dead 30th anniversary! They are all pretty interesting to watch because of it's low budget. If you are into B movies directed by once famous people, Santa Claws is it!
The acting is overacted and laughable, the plot is ridiculous, and the effects are beyond cheesy. Grant Kramer is enjoyable to watch as a psycopath!

Strongly cast well-scripted Scott western, sadly let down by poor DVD transfer........2007-01-23
In 1866 Indiana the Reno brothers gang are ambushed during an attempted bank robbery in the town of North Vernon, Bill Reno is killed as the rest of the gang escape over the Jackson County border. On return to their gangster friendly hometown of Seymour, Southern Indiana where they are in cahoots with the local sheriff (Ray Teal) the Judge (Edgar Buchanan) and Prosecuting Attorney (Howard Petrie). The brothers set a trap to find out who betrayed them Sim Reno (J.
