Everything clicked in this 1994 action hit, from the premise (a city bus has to keep moving at 50 mph or blow up) to the two leads (the usually inscrutable Keanu Reeves and the cute-as-a-button Sandra Bullock) to the villain (Dennis Hopper in psycho mode) to the director (Jan De Bont, who made this film hit the ground running with an edge-of-your-seat opening sequence on a broken elevator). This is the sort of movie that becomes a prototype for a thousand lesser films (including De Bont's lousy sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control), but Speed really is a one-of-a-kind experience almost anyone can enjoy. --Tom Keogh

Waking Life is a film that never settles down. Or maybe it never wakes up. Regardless, Richard Linklater's animated meditation seems to strike a perfect balance between the plotless meanderings of Slacker and the unquenchable knowledge-seeking of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha. Any way you look at it, this is a weird, original movie.

As he attempts to figure out what separates dreams from reality, the protagonist (Dazed and Confused's Wiley Wiggins) hears an earful from everyone he stumbles upon. Ramblings range from the scholarly (Linklater's former college professor Robert C. Solomon gives a monologue) to the banal (of which there are plenty). Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Steven Soderbergh, and Adam Goldberg all get animated cameos, basically playing themselves. The dream-centered dialogues eventually grow mind-numbing, but that's OK; the animation steals the show. Each frame of the movie, which was first shot with live actors, was painted over, and the process renders a distorted and trippy collage of sights and sounds. Linklater's film is ultimately quite poignant, but, as with any good journey, you'll need to sit through some fairly tedious moments before reaching the destination. --Jason Verlinde

Description

From the director of Slacker and Dazed and Confused comes one of the most imaginative animated features ever made. This funny, ingenious film, which Rolling Stone Magazine calls "nothing short of amazing," explores the fascinating question: "Are we sleep-walking through our waking state or wake- walking through our dreams"? Join Wiley Wiggins as he searches for answers to lifes most important questions in a world that may or may not be reality in the "most visually alive movie of the year." (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times)

3 out of 5 stars Typical of Linklater....talky, uneven, occasionally insightful, occasionally banal and tiresome..........2007-06-16

I like Richard Linklater more as a person than a filmmaker. Here is a good example of his work. The ideas put forth are interesting and necessary, but the film overall is very ponderous, talky (almost all of Linklater's films are talky), pseudo-intellectual (like his generation, Gen X), and kind of boring in spots. The conversations veer from passable to banal, and the rotoscoping, while interesting, isn't really groundbreaking. Rotoscoping has been done for quite some time, but it looks better than it used to, because of digital technology. The film is average. I like Linklater's intelligence and ambition, and he's very personable in interviews, but his work is usually disappointing. It's not terrible, but it's not as good as it can be.

2 out of 5 stars Was a good effort.......2007-06-12

This movie takes the risk and gets silly at times. It is a series of monologues (Or an alternative description would be 'ramblings'). There is not, however, anything deep or eye-opening about it. Rather just observations from an 'altered' state of mind. As a whole, it comes off as pretentious. The rotoscoping technique used is different but not terribly inventive or original. I wasn't impressed but it was a good effort.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Piece Of Work........2007-06-02

This movie can be a barrage for the senses and can make you doubt what you might think is reality. I was moved greatly by this movie and I have loved ith from the first time that I saw it. Some of the theories in it may seem so far out there because you have never really thought about them that way before, but once they are presented to you they kinda make sense. If you like to think outside of the box then give this movie a shot and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Sort of awake.......2007-05-12

Unique unearthing of subjects which sort have lived in the ether of American thought for the last ten years or so. Subjects and presentations range from the 'would you please just shut up' to 'that's odd and interesting' variety.

Good to know that films like this can still be made. Every once in awhile nice to see something for people who enjoy thinking and aren't embarrassed to say so.

5 out of 5 stars Real.......2007-04-03

What is REAL??? This film shows something to discuss... is this reality?? Yes!! But... are we or am I in a dream?? Does that matter???

If u like this film, read from Peter Berger n Thomas Luckmann "The Social Construction of REALITY"

One of the first "Japanimation" series to air in the U.S., Speed Racer (Mach Go Go Go) debuted in syndication in September 1967. Eighteen-year-old Speed Racer wants to become a race car driver, but his father, automotive engineer "Pops" Racer, "blows a gasket" at the idea. Pops, who designed the amazing Mach 5, relents when Speed demonstrates his extraordinary driving skills. He embarks on a series of fantastic adventures that pit him and his friends against Skull Duggery, Snake Oiler, Mr. Wiley, and the Alpha Gang. With their wide chins, large mouths, and small eyes, the Speed Racer characters reflect the influence of contemporary Hanna-Barbara series, rather than the indigenous style the Japanese animation industry would later develop. Members of Gen-X who grew up watching the original show will enjoy this "collector's edition" that offers the first 11 episodes, a theme song sing-along, a villains' gallery, and an interactive demonstration of controls of the Mach 5. (Unrated: suitable for ages 6 and older: mild cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Speed Racer Releases.......2007-05-14

I finally picked up the first of the volumes the other day. This is the best of all of them. I am still enjoying the on screen Mach 5 demonstrations. Way to much fun!
I can remember being a kid and watching this show in the morning before school. It's been so much fun to recapture the energy of this show on dvd.
The other following volumes are only ok. I mean they're good each on their own, but nowhere near as great as this first release of the set. The quality of the show went downhill as can be seen throughout the volumes subsequent releases.
It was my first taste of Japanimation; even at an early age. And it isn't going to be my last all these (30 +) years later.

5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-04-09

It's about memories! One of the reasons I enjoyed this DVD so much is because of childhood memories of running home from school to watch Speed Racer and a few other 70s classics. Cartoons have changed tremendously! So, the one thing that will make a difference other than quality (in which I thought the DVD was of good quaility), is your early memories. My children even watch it.

3 out of 5 stars Go Speed .......2007-03-31

It takes you back to the good ol'days. I wish the picture was clearer - a little fuzzy.

5 out of 5 stars My Kids Love Speed Racer!.......2007-03-09

In this second set of adventures, Speed and his friends race against a madman's robot-controlled car in "Race for Revenge." Trixie gets jealous when Speed pays too much attention to the pretty title character in "The Girl Daredevil." In "The Desperate Desert Race," the gang is taken prisoner by rebel army leader Ali ben Schemer, a character who may offend Arab-American viewers.

When Mach Go Go Go debuted in syndication in the U.S. as Speed Racer in 1967, the series had been extensively re-edited to excise much of the violence. These edits cause some continuity problems: in "Girl Daredevil," new tires appear on the Mach-5 between two scenes, and a villain steals the car, although it was out of gas minutes earlier. As the exploits of Speed, Trixie, Sparks, Spritle, and Chim Chim remain a touchstone for fans who grew up watching them, members of Gen-Y are unlikely to be troubled by these awkward moments. (Unrated, suitable for ages 6 and older: cartoon violence, tobacco use, minor ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Speed Racer - Episodes 12-23..........2007-06-02

I'm a Speed Racer fan - what can I say? - I rate the disc 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2007-03-09

What a great series this was. It brings back allot of happy memories. I used to watch Speed Racer every day when I came home from elementary school in the 70's.

It's interesting to compare cartoons from this period to those of today. People were actually hurt and killed in these old cartoons, though over-all there was less violence. Perhaps it was better to show the consequences of violent actions? Anyway, the stories continue to be entertaining to me even today.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, as ever!!.......2007-01-05

One of the great selling points of this package is the low price.

In my opinion, there is an episode in this set that is so much better than the others (which are very good, also), that makes watching the others a little less pleasure. The episode I'm talking about is "The Fire Race". This episode is so full of action, the race itself so absurdly dangerous and fatal, that you are at the edge of your seta for the most part of the episode. 96 drivers entered the race and only two survived!!

1 out of 5 stars Speed Racer -Episodes 12-23.......2006-12-08

The DVD I got did not have the light up or music feature as advertised and reviewed. I was very disappointed after already knowing that there was a sub par duplicate copy and expected the orignial as reviewed and advertised. This item should say not as orignally produced

5 out of 5 stars Great experience .......2006-07-10

This is a great experience for children to have a good, clean fun experience with well-rounded entertaining characters.
Thanks for the old cartoon experiences.

Hold on tight for a rush of pulse-pounding thrills, breathtaking stunts and unexpected romance in a film you'll want to see again and again. Keanu Reeves stars as Jack Traven, an L.A.P.D. SWAT team specialist who is sent to diffuse a bomb that a revenge-driven extortionist (Dennis Hopper) has planted on a bus. But until he does, Jack and passenger Sandra Bullock must keep the bus speeding through the streets of Los Angeles at more than 50 miles per hour - or the bomb will explode. A high-octane chase of suspense, non-stop action and surprise twists, Speed is a joyride sure to keep everyone on the edge of their seats.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Fav. Movie.......2007-05-26

The movie I received was in great shape and I have watched it many times, thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Very Exciting........2007-05-12

This movie keeps you on your toes, very exciting and entertaining, not a dull moment, just great.

5 out of 5 stars action movie.......2007-05-12

One of my favorite mindless action movies. Just turn off, sit back and enjoy. Dennis Hopper was terrific.

4 out of 5 stars Reeves, Bullock, Hopper press some pedal.......2007-03-24

This 1994 matchup of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock would not be the last pairing of this couple. This fortunate outcome for movie viewers makes it even more fascinating to watch the chemistry between the two back in 1994 when they did not trip off the tongue easily as a twinned male-female leads.

The flashes of humor that pass between them in this flick are brilliant, all the more so because the bomb-rigged bus they're maneuvering through LA, knowing that if bus and passengers will blow up if their speed goes below 50 mph, provides a death trap as a background.

The two wryly observe that relationships that begin under high-stress circumstances don't last. This reviewer is glad to file Bullock and Reeves in SPEED as an exception.

Dennis Hopper pulls a great turn as a heartless but very smart psycho terrorist. He's only in it for the money, so the show can move on without having to get the audience up to speed on any complicated grievances flowing from the past into Hopper's absurdly expressive brain.

Back to Reeves and Bullock, it's almost preternatural how cool the former can appear and how girl-next-door the latter. A lot of cinematic water has flowed under the bridge since the first SPEED back in the 90's. Reeves' and Bullocks repertoires have considerably expanded.

All the better than that such fun can come out of an evening's watching how they established a relationship (in role and as actors) under this most stressful of circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Speed.......2007-01-31

The storyline is simple and great. There is never a dull moment is this movie. The director did a great job in casting Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock as screen couple. This movie still manage to glue me down to my seat even after ten years of production. It is a "must-have" for any good moives collector.

Even if you've never witnessed the intensity of MotoGP motorcycle racing, Faster will take your breath away. It's a perfect primer for newcomers, offering a comprehensive survey of the fastest sport on two wheels, and it's guaranteed to satisfy hardcore fans with its detailed history, profiles of the top riders from the 2001-02 seasons, highlights of spectacular crashes and unforgettable races, and a veritable feast of the best MotoGP cinematography you're ever likely to see. From front-and-rearview cycle cameras to swooping overhead track coverage, filmmaker Mark Neale immerses the viewer in the MotoGP experience, enhancing the adrenaline-pumping visuals with expert interviews and commentary (and cool, low-key narration by globetrotting cycle-lover Ewan McGregor) that any sportswriter would consider authoritative.

Literally and figuratively, a lot of ground gets covered: From Kenny Roberts and the late Barry Sheene discussing their innovative knee-dragging styles and the origins of rear-wheel steering to the colorful rivalry of Max Biaggi and reigning champion Valentino Rossi (including Biaggi's infamous "Elbow Incident" at Suzuka in 2001), Faster never loses sight of the human element that makes this ultra-dangerous sport so fascinating. Track physician "Dr. Costa" is profiled (and offers some eloquently philosophical thoughts about MotoGP riders), along with innovative rider Garry McCoy (plagued by injuries); former champion Wayne Rainey (now paraplegic and active in kart-racing); young prodigy John Hopkins in his rookie season; and several other prominent figures in the world of MotoGP.

The bonus disc includes Faster & Faster, a sequel covering the 2003 and 2004 seasons, which saw the rise of the 500cc 4-stroke engine (and speeds in excess of 215 mph), Ducati's dominance and trend-setting removal of engine silencers (to boost power); Rossi's move to Yamaha; the fatal crash of Daijiro Kato; the victories of Sete Gibernau; and the rookie debuts of Neil Hodgson, Ruben Xaus, and Shane Byrne. Through it all, Faster and its sequel serve as the ultimate guide to MotoGP, certain to inspire future champions and armchair fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A heart-hammering sensation at Slamdance, Faster is an electrifying tribute to the white-knuckle world of the Motorcycle Grand Prix--the fastest sport on two wheels--where only the most audacious competitors race at speeds over 200mph and crash at over 100mph. Narrated by Ewan McGregor (Big Fish, Star Wars: Episodes I-III), Faster chases two seasons' worth of the world championship, featuring revealing interviews with riders, mechanics, doctors, commentators and fans.

This is my second copy of "Faster"....the first was borrowed and stayed that way. Wonderfully shot with insightful narration from the stars of Moto GP. Can't recommend it enough!!

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-06-10

This documentary is a classic, gives you in detail the change from the 500 two stroke to the 990 four stroke in 2002, very good, for people who is really into moto GP is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Even kept my girlfriend interested..........2007-03-27

My girlfriend hates my motorcycle and has absolutely no interest in motorsports. I started watching this one night at her place and before I knew it she and one of her roommates had gotten sucked into watching. It puts a very human perspective on the trials and tribulations of arguably one of the most challenging motorsports arenas. Watching Gary McCoy throttle slide a 200+ HP motorcycle out of a turn, some crazy spills and victory wheelies doesn't hurt...

5 out of 5 stars MOTOGP The movie!.......2007-03-25

this is the single best dvd about the greatest motorcycle race in the world. It's a little behind right now as far as the current motogp rosters; however, if you are intersted at all in the motogp or motorcycle racing. Buy this dvd now!

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2007-01-25

I don't know how to ride a motorcycle (I'm a car guy). I've never watched MotoGP on TV. I can't tell a Honda from a Yamaha if placed in front of me. And yet, I was simply and totally captivated by this DVD.

I admit I do enjoy Ewan McGregor's movies, and I especially enjoyed 'Long Way Round'. This was a guy who seemed to know what he was doing, so it was on the basis of this (and my being rather bored one day) that I bought this DVD. I didn't know what to expect. But I can tell you now: it was better than anything I could have imagined.

Basically, this is a documentary following the people and events during two seasons of MotoGP. The cast of characters is colorful. There is the rock-star-like veteran, the meteoric challenger, the likeable everyman plagued by bad luck, the young rookie, and the mad doctor looking after the whole flock. The documentary takes a sympathetic look at these guys, charting their ups and downs over 2 tumultuous seasons of furious racing and pain-staking preparations. The battles between them on the track are riveting and dramatic. Full of dirty tricks, bitter mindgames, and hot-blooded racing with multiple overtaking maneuvers. Think of all the racing movies you've ever watched (Le Mans, Days of Thunder, Driven etc etc) - this beats them all by a wide margin in terms of drama and tension ... and it's all real life ! After this, you'll probably never be thrilled by F1, Indy, NASCAR or any race on 4 wheels ever again - where you'll be lucky to get one breath-taking overtaking move per race, not several per lap as in MotoGP.

This documentary has really remarkable access to all the big stars in the sport. The heroes, the prima-donnas, and the hotshot rookies all open themselves to the camera. And they all turn out to be charismatic, genuine and 'human' individuals. Any movie screenplay would struggle to depict characters as instantly sympathetic as this bunch of bikers. You simply cannot imagine Schumacher, Alonso and co from Formula 1 doing a DVD like this - where you the viewer can get up close and ride with them. Magic. The only thing comparable in my experience would have to be the 'Metallica: Some Kind of Monster' documentary - in terms of the close, personal access to mega-stars that the film-makers had.

The race footage is brilliant, and matched with a decent soundtrack. Watching the races (albeit highlights only) was enough to get the pulse rate up. The film-makers do a good job keeping the pace of the film running along just right. The thrash-speed races intercut well between the more introspective looks at the invidual riders. Nice job.

The DVD offers good extras. The ability to follow key laps of key races with any one of the key riders is an interesting touch. It allows the viewer to see exactly how the race was won or lost from the perspective of each protagonist. But the best extra of all was the 'sequel' documentary, following the riders on the next two seasons. After an exhilirating film like this, you don't want it to just end like that - you keep on wanting to know what happens next. For me, that's a mark of a successful film.

Well, you can see that I liked this film. Watching it has not spurred me on to get a motorbike licence (I still prefer my turbo 4WD car), but it HAS excited me enough that I'll be tuning in to MotoGP this season.

You don't have to be a bike fan to enjoy this DVD (I wasn't). I would recommend it to anyone who:
- enjoys real-life drama (actually melodrama !)
- enjoys good documentary film-making
- or simply has a bit of 'speed' in their blood

Here the last 8 episodes of Speed Racer in the 1960s.Speed Racer is a professional racer who competes in all races in the world with his advanced and unique car the Mach 5.He and all the grease gang(Sparky,Sprite,Chim Chim,Pops)travels over the world to defeat the most siniester and weird adversaries and racers. One known as Racer X is the older brother of Speed Rex Speed who runs away from home after Pops forbids him to become a professional racer.Interesting eps are the two part Race Around the World,Trick Race.

A favorite show of mine from when I was a little boy. A part of my past I was able to ACTUALLY recapture.

5 out of 5 stars Great Birthday Gift for my little brother (He's 41 yr old).......2007-05-09

My brother and I used to watch Speed Racer as kids together. He now has the full set, all volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Speed Racer Ends With a Bang.......2007-03-27

This is the last entry in a five volume set collecting all 52 episodes of the 1960s Speed Racer. This series has a very self-contained air, with a beginning, a middle and an end. It begins with Speed's first professional race and ends when he becomes world champion. With all the episodes now available to fans on DVD, we can evaluate the series as a whole. And I am forced to the conclusion that while the beginning and the end rock, the middle fairly sucks.

As the series progressed I suspect the creators began to run out of money because episode quality dropped immensely. Most of the truly excellent eps, "The Great Plan", "Challenge of the Masked Racer", "The Race Against the Mammoth Car", "The Most Dangerous Race", "The Fire Race" and "The Fastest Car on Earth" are two-parters (or in the case of "The Most Dangerous Race" the show's only three-parter) clustered in the series' early days; they're all on Volumes 1 and 2 of the set. Toward the middle/end (the stuff on Volumes 3 and 4) we get a bunch of single ep stories with artwork, scripting, and even the amount of animation all noticably inferior to earlier efforts.

Which brings us to Volume 5 (the last eight eps). Episode quality on this DVD varies wildly, containing both Speed's absolute worst adventure and one of his very best. Other eps range from mediocre to good, with, thankfully, rather more of the latter.

I've always had a weak spot for "The Great Car Wrestling Match" (Episode #45). True, its animation is limited, but the artwork is good, and the storyline amazingly strong. If I may be allowed to seemingly digress for a moment: one reason so many fans love "The Race Against the Mammoth Car" I feel is that it's one of the few times in the series Speed uses the Mach 5 offensively against another vehicle. When Speed breaks out the saw blades and starts slicing tires off the Mammoth Car that just flat DOES it for people. For "The Great Car Wrestling Match" they came up with the absolutely deranged idea of having Speed enter the Mach 5 in a demolition derby. This episode gives us what we love most about "Mammoth Car" - the Mach 5 in car-on-car battle - only instead of a few brief moments within a larger storyline, it's the focus of the entire ep. Thus Speed uses every trick he can pull out of that fantastic car to trash about fifty-seven million other vehicles AND one of his opponents has a highly tricked-out car of his own with a built-in arsenal of weaponry specifically designed to kill the Mach 5.

Ah, good stuff.

I despise "Motorcycle Apaches" (#46). To my mind it's the single worst ep. Speed and the gang look really, really stupid wearing cowboy hats. The characterization of the Apaches is more than a little racist. "Ugh!" indeed. Don't all "Indians" talk that way? Then we have Speed's comments, courtesy of Japanese writers, on what a horrible, selfish thing it is that the Apaches have a problem with their land being used, without their permission, for a facility to build better and more powerful nuclear bombs. This struck me, even as a kid, as self-righteous tripe propounded by outsiders who didn't know what the hell they were talking about.

"Car With a Brain" and "Junk Car Grand Prix" (#s 47 & 48) are forgettable examples of the aforementioned inferior writing, artwork and animation.

"The Car in the Sky" (#49) is decent. "The Trick Race" (#50) features the return of the Car Acrobatic Team from "The Most Dangerous Race" and co-stars Racer X, always a good thing. "The Trick Race" relies heavily on footage from earlier episodes, chiefly "The Most Dangerous Race". Even some of the events happening within the storyline use footage cribbed from other eps. Whenever new footage is intercut with old, the wide disparity in quality of animation (often none at all as characters talk without moving their mouths) and artwork is evident. "The Trick Race" is a pristine example of talented creators turning necessity into virtue; because they had very little money to produce the ep, about half of it is stitched together from previously existent footage. Amazingly, with an ingenious script, "The Trick Race" works, and works well. What happens between Racer X and Speed at the end of the ep has to be seen to be believed. It's genuinely moving and was picked by TV Guide as one of the most memorable moments in television history.

Then there's the series finale, the two-part "Race Around the World" (#s 51 & 52). Obviously the creators wanted to end the series on an up note. None of that weinie single episode stuff, Speed Racer needed to end with a two-parter, and it needed to be great! It was, due to an amazingly inventive script combined with some of the series' best artwork and animation. Speed competes in the Around-the-World Grand Prix requiring him to pilot a Formula 1 car, rocket powered raceboat, airboat, biplane, raft, submarine, snow tractor, ice yacht, truck, motorcycle, kayak - and of course he finishes in the Mach 5 - all while nature and two other racing teams pull every dirty trick they can think of to knock him out of the running. In the final ep, Racer X shows up one last time. Really, they should have called this adventure "Everything But the Kitchen Sink". For my money "The Most Dangerous Race" will always be the best Speed Racer, but "Race Around the World" is in a strong 2nd place, a fine and worthy send-off for our hero.

Looking over the entirety of this five-volume collection, here's my advice to Speed Racer fans. If you want to enjoy the series' worthwhile eps, you should buy Volumes 1 and 2. Volumes 3 and 4 are for completists only. However you NEED Volume 5 for "Race Around the World". Speed Racer may have gotten a bit soft around the middle, but it ended rock hard.

Amazon's DVD does NOT come with the collectible miniature license plate (even though the photo shows it and the description mentions it). Save yourself the trouble of getting and then having to return it(like I did). I went and bought mine for $2 less than Amazon's price (and with the license plate) at Best Buy.

4 out of 5 stars Go Speed Racer!.......2007-03-21

I love going back to my Speed Racer days! It is so much fun showing my own little guys. I am not a critic but, there's no doubt that these collections are great! I have two others and I enjoy them all.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-02-24

A must have for the Speed Racer fan. A new cartoon for kids and a definate blast from the past for grown ups. Speed Racer was wayyyyyyyy ahead of it's time! Great episodes. Definately appreciate the details more as an adult!

5 out of 5 stars Mark Twain meets Ninja Theater in the;The Royal Racer........2006-09-01

This episode mixes the plot of "Prince & the Pauper" with ninja spies and Formula racing! Sprital nearly causes an international incident when he trades places with Prince Jam, a young Asian prince who some how looks exactly like Sprital. The real prince gets spanked by Pops, teased by Trixie and is subjected to all the problems Speed's little brother deals with dailey. Sprital, as the prince, is targeted for assassination by a would be usurper to the throne. He gets to fight ninjas along side his brother and actually gets a chance to participate in a real, genuine car race, and a Formula One race at that. As one might expect, any episode that focuses on Sprital rates high on the laugh-meter. This is one of the funniest Speed installments ever. It's also got plenty of action and interesting animated backgrounds. Essential viewing for any Speed-o-phile.

4 out of 5 stars go speed go!!!!!.......2006-05-03

as a man who grew up on speed racer i'm glad to see taht the third instalment of the shows is out,but i take one star away for the package which makes it hard to store. other wise this is one fine set and my kids are loving speed as much as i did.

3 out of 5 stars Speed RULES!!! --- but WHERE ARE THE JAPANESE EXTRAS?!.......2005-09-15

Speed Racer was my favorite cartoon growing up. I would pass up an after school KickBall game to watch Speed and the Coolest Car on Earth. I always laughed myself onto the floor watching Spritle's tears spraying out like a fountain. These cartoons were crude ... but they had a unique character and spirit that made refined art, sound, and production irrelevant. In fact the mismatched mouth movements (seemingly due to more than translation) and coarse animation only added to it's unique charm. I've waited a long time for a collection like this.

HOWEVER, I agree with other reviewers in that Lion's Gate should include the ORIGINAL JAPANESE theme song, and it would be GREAT to have a whole episode in Japanese as it aired in Japan. That would make this a much better collection.

Also, they should put forth some effort to improve the video quality. I have a VHS tape that provides better image quality. It's as if they are not using original masters.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Good workout!.......2007-06-27

This is the 2nd Leslie Sansone walk video I purchased. I like it very much. The workout is good. She increases the speed and intensity of the workout gradually so it is easy to keep up. The 30 minutes goes quickly and it is easy to get this video in every day. There are only two things I do not like. First, she talks way too much (she even admits that during the workout). Second, the music is hard to hear. When you turn the volume up, all you can hear is the talking. If you can get past that, you will like this workout.

4 out of 5 stars Good low impact workout.......2007-06-20

If you are looking for a quick, low-impact workout, this one is great. It's not intense enough for someone in really good shape, but it's plenty for someone starting out or recovering from an injury. After learning I was pregnant, I wanted a low-impact workout that wasn't yoga or pilates. This one is fun and can be modified up or down for a more or less intense workout. Leslie Sansone is a chatterbox but she keeps you moving.

    5 out of 5 stars great 2 mile walk.......2007-06-08

I sweat to this one! A good fast pace. I have several other of Leslie's DVD's and this one was a very good carido workout without weights.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for Leslie!.......2006-11-27

If you're looking for an upbeat positive workout experience that features very simple coreography, then Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds programs are for you! This particular program is 30 minutes (2 miles). Fortunately, it features the same group of people as the 1 mile and 3 mile routines, each with a unique personality that will put a smile on your face no matter how sour you are about having to exercise.

Leslie uses five basic steps that are easy to follow:
    - Walking in place
    - Side Steps
    - Knee Lifts
    - Kicks
    - Kick backs

She includes simple arm extensions, swinging movement, and clapping to get the upper body involved. About halfway through the routine, she has you pick up the "walk away weights" and add in some basic lifts and extensions. This really helps to get that extra burn. You can buy very similar weights at Wal Mart or even use hand weights. My wife uses water bottles!

The Walk Away routines are fun and definitely positive - you can't help but feeling like you are with friends. I found Leslie's bubbly presonality contagious and don't mind her quirky remarks. This routine gives a nice blend somewhere between easy going and a fairly vigorous burn. Highly recommended!

Written by Arthur Bradley, author of "Process of Elimination" - an exciting thriller that pits a martial arts expert against a world-class sniper out to shape the next presidential election.

Please be kind enough to indicate if reviews are helpful.

5 out of 5 stars another great video.......2006-09-04

I now have two Leslie Sansone videos and love them both. I highly recommend this one and Walk Strong. It's time to get into shape!!

--Tom Keogh

    Description

Obviously Speed Racer is timeless. Our kids love the DVD. We don't leave home without it.

5 out of 5 stars Love Speed Racer.......2007-02-16

I have all 5 DVDs of Speed Racer. What a nice blast from the past. It's also somewhat refreshing to let my child watch it vs. the endless drone of Dora or Diego. He loves it. We watch all of the DVDs depending on his mood and he even wants to be Speed Racer for Halloween. It's a shame that the Speed Racer "comeback" on the internet seems mindless. Speed Racer was almost like James Bond, fighting bad guys back then. You don't see that nowadays in many cartoons. I was 3 when I first was watching these and I still think they are all awesome. Even more fun to watch now that I'm older and understand what is going on now.

It's too bad they aren't bringing it back, old school style. That would be the way to do it.

3 out of 5 stars VOLUME FOUR IS RUNNING ON FUMES !! .......2006-12-17

Speed Racer volume 4 is a complete disappointment. Why did the studio decide to split the final 16 episodes of speed racer into two volumes?.The entire series only had 52 episodes,so why 5 volumes. The studio has resorted to cheap gimmick's from the start to sell their dvd's and that's just wrong. The first season had rubber tire packaging(neat). The second season had a slip cover with music and blinking headlights(cool). The third season was a dvd in a cheap tin can(very cheap). The fourth season contains only 8 episodes and comes with a 1/64 scale diecast mach 5(big deal).I don't know about the rest of you but i stopped playing with dinky cars a long time ago and would have liked the final 16 episodes on one volume. Why didn't the studio just release the entire series in a limited edition boxed set.Maybe some tv shows need gimmick's to sell, Speed Racer certainly doesn't!.

3 out of 5 stars Skimping on storylines.......2006-08-30

If you enjoy Speed Racer, this is an essential part of the series to have as a die-hard regardless. However, most of the episodes are only one part episodes. They wrap up much too quickly. I say get the other volumes if you like the multi-part episode series. The two-part storylines are needed to make a good plot and development. There is only one two-part series on this DVD. And the collector's car isn't anything special to look at. It's just a neat little bonus to have I guess. If you want a better looking model car, Johnny Lightning brand is the ticket if you can fine one.

    3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2006-05-23

Only 8 episodes not in order as the Tv broadcasted, the last one compressed and fast paced.Only the die cast collectible makes the set worth.I hope Lions Gate learn the lesson and the last release of the series can be better.I'll be waiting.
