Just as the castaways were left to languish on Gilligan's Island, so, too, did cancellation deprive fans of seeing Col. Hogan (Bob Crane) and company finally liberated from Stalag 13. But at least this controversial series (again; it's a P.O.W., and not a concentration, camp!) went out literally with a bang, another successful act of sabotage of Nazi operations. The sixth season brought a new face to the barracks, Kenneth Washington as Sgt. Baker, replacing (without explanation) Ivan Dixon's "Kinch." Happily, some of the series' most entertaining recurring characters put in final appearances. Bernard Fox, as the hapless Col. Crittendon, enjoys his finest hour in the two-parter "Lady Chitterly's Lover," in which he must impersonate a look-alike British traitor, and Kathleen Freeman, as the dread Gertrude Berkhalter, upsets Hogan's plans to sneak a downed U.S. general out of camp in "Kommandant Gertrude." John Banner, as Sgt. Schultz, has one of his best episodes in "Kommandant Schultz," in which power goes to the cuddly buffoon's head when he is put in command of Stalag 13.

But mostly this season is business as usual, with Hogan and his men--Newkirk (Richard Dawson), LeBeau (Robert Clary) and Carter (Larry Hovis)--smuggling, hijacking, stealing, and otherwise disrupting the German war effort under the nose of clueless Col. Klink (Werner Klemperer, an Emmy nominee for this season). One standout episode is "Eight O'Clock and All Is Well," with guest star Monte Markham as a new prisoner with impeccable credentials whom Hogan discovers is actually a Gestapo spy. And in the episode "Look at the Pretty Snowflakes," Crane gets to demonstrate his virtuoso drumming as he attempts to cause an avalanche. Between the "krauts, lice, stinking food and bloody awful weather," life in Stalag 13 was no picnic. But, as Hogan tries to convince LeBeau not to return to France in the episode "Cuisine a la Stalag 13," let us not forget "all the fun... all the laughs." That is Hogan's Heroes' final legacy. --Donald Liebenson

Product Description

The inmates of a German World War II Prisoners of War camp conduct espionage and sabotage campaign right under the noses of their warders. While the enemy is often gullible, easily fooled or downright incompetent - the real strength of Hogan's men are the elaborate ruses and sometimes dangerous lengths they will go to complete their mission.

5 out of 5 stars enjoyed watching.......2007-07-03

I really enjoyed watching the shows. I wish that they had some better extras like other scenes and outtakes, otherwise great show!

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift.......2007-06-28

I'm not a huge fan of this series but my parents and sister are. They purchase the entire series and watch it over and over again. I think the actors are very funny, but the humor doesn't 'click' with me. Still, I like Schultz and some of his lines, and I'm so pleased they found something they enjoy so much. 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Great Classic Commedy Series.......2007-06-20

This is one of my favorite Classic Commedy series from the 1960s/early 70s.

Probably seasons 2,3, and 4 were the best. They were hitting their stride in Season 2 and starting to wear a little thin towards the end of season 4. Season six is still fun to watch. If you just want a taste of the series, buy some of the earlier boxes first.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the purchase -- an outstanding final season.......2007-06-17

The Sixth & final season of HH gets some bad reviews -- many have said that the series really ran one or two seasons too long. Somewhat to the contrary, this season has some of the series' finest moments. While the absence of Ivan Dixon (Kinchloe) is certainly noticable, highlights include the 2-part "Lady Chitterly's Lover," "Operation Tiger" with a stellar performance by the great Frank Marth, "Easy Come, Easy Go," which sees Col. Klink take a trip to London, and "Look at the Pretty Snowflakes" with its memorable jam session. Standing head and shoulders above the rest, however, is "The Meister Spy," which is nothing short of absolute dramatic and comedic brilliance jammed into 25 fast-paced, intense minutes. That episode alone is worth the purchase of the series.

There are, of course, other fine moments, too numerous to mention. Far from being, as some would say, a desperate attempt by the producers to keep the series interesting, the sixth season includes some rather innovative plotlines and unusual twists, unique to this season alone. The only thing missing -- other than Kinchloe -- is the absence of a true "Series Finale," an omission for which true Hoganologists will never forgive. But, as Hogan says to close out the series, "Frankly, General, I thought it was a lousy neighborhood anyway."

4 out of 5 stars Hogan's Heroes Season Six.......2007-06-14

Hogan's Heroes is all-time favorite TV program. I own all six seasons. I think seasons 1-3 were 10/10, season 4 was 9/10, season five was 8.5/10, and season six was 7.5/10.

I think the sixth season is not as good because there was more slapstick involved, as opposed to developing strategic solutions to solve some problem or injure the enemy. I think the value in the series was the sneaking around, the impersonation of German officers, and fooling the Germans in general. Seeing Klink crash on a motorcycle just doesn't seem funny. It is still good and worth owning if you enjoy the series, I would recommend starting with one of the first four seasons.

The other notable difference on season six was that Kinchloe was replaced by Baker. Whereas Kinchloe was an integral part of the series, Baker is just a radio operator and doesn't add much value to the series. Kinchloe was a great character and losing him did detract from the series. His impersonations of Germans on the telephone were always great.

The Waltons: The Complete Fifth Season finds the Depression-era, Blue Ridge Mountains family a little more in touch with the outside world, largely because of the aspirations of the growing Walton children. The most dramatic example, over numerous epsiodes, results from the assertiveness of professional journalist John-Boy (Richard Thomas) as he insists on publishing national and international news in the small-circulation Blue Ridge Chronicle he writes, edits, and publishes. A lot of people in the county are mystified as to why John-Boy would want to bring Walton's Mountain closer to epochal events in Germany, or why he would choose to provide coverage of the Hindenburg zeppelin's aerial triumphs despite its link to the Nazis. Yet John-Boy is just as interested in his backyard as the world stage: In season opener "The First Edition," he stands up to strong pressure to kill a story about a judge whose drunk-driving offense causes costly property damage. In "The Fire Storm," locals are appalled when he prints excerpts from Hitler's Mein Kampf in order to make readers aware of what kind of madman the German chancellor is.

While John-Boy stands up to popular opinion, brother Jason (Jon Walmsley), a talented musician, has to take a job playing piano at a roadhouse to make up for the loss of his college scholarship. The decision doesn't go down too well with the Walton women, but Jason's presence at the Dew Drop Inn allows for some interesting scenes over the course of the season, none more so than the unexpected visit of a fire-and-brimstone evangelist in "The Baptism." In that same show, father John Walton, played by Ralph Waite, notorious in his Christian community for eschewing church services, faces renewed pressure from wife Olivia (Michael Learned) to accept her faith, making for one of the most interesting episodes of the season. Meanwhile, John-Boy's sister, Mary Ellen (Judy Norton), is wooed by a couple of different men and hears wedding bells with one of them. She also pursues her nursing degree and misdiagnoses an ailment of Grandma Esther (Ellen Corby), resulting in long-term hospitalization and no end of grief for Grandpa Zeb (Will Geer). The other, increasingly restless Walton boys and girls grab their share of the spotlight, too, but The Complete Fifth Season is, once again, John-Boy's year, capped by dramatic developments in his career and vision of himself. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars We Love It!.......2007-07-03

Thank you for providing access to these great family shows. I grew up watching all of these in the 70's, and I love seeing them again. My husband and I just had a baby, and we plan to show these DVDs to our child some day, as well. They just don't make the same quality t.v. shows the way they used to. I can't wait for the next season of The Waltons to become available... will you notify me?

Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Viewing.......2007-06-27

I'm so glad there are DVDs of this best of all family programs. We need more shows like this to watch over and over again. It is nice to have the collection to view when there is nothing worth my time on TV.

4 out of 5 stars old time beauty salon.......2007-06-17

As I am trying to recreate a 1930's beauty salon, I found that the episode, The Rebellion, was right on target. Not only is the beauty salon seemingly authentic, so is the perm machine that is being used. Steam was shown rising from the head! Seeing this helped me understand what I should see with my own perm machine for my videos. For those intrigued by beauty salons of days past, I highly recommend the 5th season of the Waltons, even just for this one episode!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Waltons.......2007-06-17

The 5th season is the last with the full cast and it is very good. We are already about 12 episodes in and there have been many changes during that time. For one the kids all seem to be growing up rapidly and there has already been a marriage this season. It's a great joy to be able to view these again as the last time I saw them was with my grandparents when they were originally aired on TV. The Waltons is still one of the best shows ever to grace the TV screen. What can I say if you like The Waltons then go get it now; you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT DVD's set........2007-06-11

These are a great purchase for someone who was a Waltons fan. And even if you weren't it is a great addition to your DVD collection and very good for your children to watch.

Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

this is without a doubt the best Western ever, and for Western Lovers, there's more, the whole Lonesome Dove series is worth owning. I recommend reading the books also,.... more than once

5 out of 5 stars Duval is an American treasure!.......2007-04-19

If I could have given this film 10 stars, I would have. This is an important film. Important in that every American should see it. The chemistry between Duval and Jones is superb. I watch the DVD about every six months or so. What can one say about Duval? His performance is the best he's ever done and puts him on my list of top five actors of all time. He's even said that this role was his finest. My only regret was that this was a TV mini series and not eligible for Oscar consideration. If it had been Duval would have walked off the stage with his second Best Actor statue. Please do not miss this.

5 out of 5 stars one of the greatest westerns adapted from a great novel.......2007-04-10

luckily this screenplay was not scripted by the author himself like 'dead man's walk', so all the unnecessary non-stop yammering of gus from page one until he died was so smartly omitted that making this 'lonesome dove' movie one of the greatest westerns ever made into movie. wonderful cast, terrific performance by all the actors in it. great screenplay, wonderful and appropriate sound track lingering behind, floating up in time to deepen the feeling of every specific moment. duvall did a better-than-oscar-nomination performance, amazingly made that unforgettable character alive and became a larger-than-life image. tommy lee jones was also the best choice playing call's role. wonderful cinematography footage and settings, not one inch wasted or misplaced.

Sidney Lumet's directorial debut remains a tense, atmospheric (though slightly manipulative and stagy) courtroom thriller, in which the viewer never sees a trial and the only action is verbal. As he does in his later corruption commentaries such as Serpico or Q & A, Lumet focuses on the lonely one-man battles of a protagonist whose ethics alienate him from the rest of jaded society. As the film opens, the seemingly open-and-shut trial of a young Puerto Rican accused of murdering his father with a knife has just concluded and the 12-man jury retires to their microscopic, sweltering quarters to decide the verdict. When the votes are counted, 11 men rule guilty, while one--played by Henry Fonda, again typecast as another liberal, truth-seeking hero--doubts the obvious. Stressing the idea of "reasonable doubt," Fonda slowly chips away at the jury, who represent a microcosm of white, male society--exposing the prejudices and preconceptions that directly influence the other jurors' snap judgments. The tight script by Reginald Rose (based on his own teleplay) presents each juror vividly using detailed soliloquies, all which are expertly performed by the film's flawless cast. Still, it's Lumet's claustrophobic direction--all sweaty close-ups and cramped compositions within a one-room setting--that really transforms this contrived story into an explosive and compelling nail-biter. --Dave McCoy

Description

Eleven jurors are convinced that the defendant is guilty of murder. The twelfth has no doubt of his innocence. How can this one man steer the others toward the same conclusion? It's a case of seemingly overwhelming evidence against a teenager accused of killing his father in "one of the best pictures ever made" (The Hollywood Reporter).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Justice in a Small Room.......2007-06-22

1957's "Twelve Angry Men" is the story of a jury confined to a small room on a hot, humid summer night to decide the fate of a young man accused of knifing his father to death. The jury's initial poll has eleven jurors for guilty, one for innocent. The ensuing drama revolves around the struggle by the dissenting juror, an architect played with characteristic understated determination by Henry Fonda, to convince the other jurors of the presence of reasonable doubt.

The outstanding cast, a collection of experienced 1950's movie and tv actors who may not be familiar to today's audiences, each bring their particular insights and prejudices to the debate. An elderly man, played by Joseph Sweeney, sides with the Henry Fonda character because he admires the younger man's grit. Lee J. Cobb has an outstanding role as an angry father who sees his estranged son in the actions attributed to the young man on trial. E.G. Marshall plays a confident businessman who gets a lesson in the limits of memory from the Henry Fonda character.

The confining atmosphere of the jury room adds to the tension. Sidney Lumet's brisk but deliberate direction allows each man a turn in the spotlight to examine his conscience as well as the case in front of the other jurors. The end result is a tense, insightful drama about the nature of man and justice.

This movie is highly recommended to viewers looking for an outstanding example of the movie art and a different slant on today's crime dramas.

4 out of 5 stars Minus 1 star for script/believability - the other four for acting alone.......2007-06-13

All the stars I gave was for the acting alone- superb all around though that old man was pretty annoying at times esp with the close ups on him. But the story itself wouldnt last 10 minutes in real life. It begins with Fonda pleading the boy is only 18 (dont we send 18 years olds off to war? 18 years olds can kill?) But the surreal part is when Fonda pulls out that concealed switchblade in the jury room (gov property), sticks it in the table, and tells everyone how he went into the boys neighborhood and found a store and bought it there (AKA doing your own research); all of this HIGHLY illegal; in real life, someone would have told all of this to the bailif, got Fonda arrested and hauled off, and an alternate or a mistrail would have taken place. End of movie right there. One other thing, Fonda kept mentioning "Is it possible"; Possible is not probable, and a million possibles does not equate to one possible, much less a "Reasonable" doubt.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic !!.......2007-05-27

What a great movie!! I haven't watched it in years, but for some reason i watched it tonite. Wow, as good now as ever!!

4 out of 5 stars A good film.......2007-05-18

Though I did think it to be ever so slightly predictable, I found this movie to be a great murder mystery without all the blood, guts, gore, and horror.
The movie begins with a the jury trying to decide whether or not a eighteen year old boy is guilty of brutaly killing his father. they put it to a vote, and find that all but one of them feels that the boy is guilty without giving it so much as a second thought. The one that refused to say the boy is guilty doesn't necessarily think that he is innocent, he just thinks there aught to be more thought put into it. As the story progresess, you see how everyone's personal intersts, background and prejudices get intangled as they try to decipher between right and wrong.
This movie is well worth watching, and deserves to be in anyone's collection.
And I really have to add that I think Henry Fonda's preformance in this movie is great!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-09

12 Angry Men is an awesome example of how groups work. It is very useful in demonstrating all the points of group interaction that I teach in my Sociology class. The students liked the movie and were able to quickly tie the movie to concepts taught in class. Excellent plot and follow through in developing the story line.

If you've never seen an aviation movie before in your entire life, you'll be blissfully ignorant of the fact that Memphis Belle shamelessly (and yet gloriously) incorporates just about every cliché in the flight-movie handbook. If you're a big fan of aviation movies--especially movies about World War II bomber crews--you'll be glad that the genre's clichés have been handled with such professional flair. As it follows the crew of a B-17 bomber on its final and most dangerous mission over Germany, Memphis Belle may be little more than a slick and highly authentic presentation of familiar thrills and characters, but it's a rousing piece of entertainment. Featuring an ensemble cast of fresh faces who've since enjoyed thriving careers (including Billy Zane, Sean Astin, Eric Stoltz, D.B. Sweeney, and Harry Connick Jr.), the movie exists as a fitting tribute to the men who fought and often died in the air over hostile territory. It's the Hollywood version of a 1944 wartime documentary made by legendary director William Wyler (whose daughter served as one of this film's producers), and as such it's a bit contrived and melodramatic. And yet, this exciting movie is almost certain to grab and hold your attention, offering an honorable reminder of the bravery and integrity that were crucial ingredients of any bomber's crew. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Sentimental, But It Works!.......2007-06-17

1990's "Memphis Belle" may be sentimental, corny, and cliched, but as a movie about bomber crews flying dangerous routes over Nazi Germany, it works wonderfully well. Only the most cynical of viewers will failed to be moved by its simple but effective story.

"Memphis Belle" is based on the story of a real-life B-17 about to finish 25 combat missions, after which its crew will be eligible to rotate home from the war in Europe. Their final mission will be a daylight run over Dresden, a heavily defended target. An ensemble cast headed by Matthew Modine as the sober young pilot-in-charge goes through its flight preparations, while a series of short vignettes introduces the viewer to the individual members of the crew. The stand-out young cast includes Eric Stoltz as a radio operator with aspirations of being a poet; Tate Donovan as the cocky, attention-seeking co-pilot; Billy Zane as a bombardier who is about to pay a price for living a lie; DB Sweeney as the flak-happy navigator; and in a superb cameo, jazz musician Harry Connick, Jr, as the tail gunner. Connick, by the way, does a impressive job on an improvised version of "Danny Boy" early in the movie.

The action involving the aircrew is nicely balanced by a subplot on the ground, as a war-weary Bomber Group commander (earnestly played by David Straitharn) must reel in a cynical public affairs officer (John Lithgow). Their confrontation provides context to what is happening to the Memphis Belle in the air.

The final mission turns into a nightmare of flak, enemy fighters, casualties, and mechanical failures, as the crews ends up nursing a stricken bomber towards its home field in England. The final minutes of the movie should leave no viewer unmoved.

This movie is highly recommended to those looking for an entertaining and fairly realistic movie on the bomber campaign against Hitler's Germany.

5 out of 5 stars The key to enjoying this movie..........2007-05-21

...is to realize that, although no single plane and crew experienced everything that's shown happening to the Memphis Belle in this film -- and certainly not on a single mission -- nevertheless, everything that is shown undoubtedly happened to many, many planes and crews during the long bombing campaign in the European theater. To watch this movie is to get a small taste of the fear, tragedy, and triumph experienced by those brave men (and boys).
Several years ago, I stood in my back yard and watched a vintage P-51 Mustang (the "little friends" of this movie) roar overhead at low altitude on its way to an air show at a nearby airport. I was stunned at the raw power of that 60 year old aircraft, which made today's small Cessna-type aircraft seem like mosquitos in comparison. Watching "Memphis Belle", I couldn't help but feel that the 40s were in some way the peak of manned flight. Today we have supersonic or hypersonic flight, and are beginning to see pilot-less combat aircraft. It seems to me that none of them compare to those big, lumbering, steel and plexiglass B-17s and their young, inexperienced crews.

5 out of 5 stars Good Show.......2007-03-24

I liked this movie. The airplanes in this movie are getting rare, and I like the historical aspect of the movie. We should all remember what those men did for our freedom. I would not have wanted to be in their shoes. I am thankful to be an American!

5 out of 5 stars A Big Hit for the Elementary School Boys Crowd.......2007-03-23

We purchased this DVD for our friends' son's 7th birthday. He is obsessed with airplanes. He usually fast-forwards movies to get to any scene with a fighter jet. This is his favorite movie, so of course he loved the gift. We haven't been able to find it locally for sale, only for rent. I would recommend this to anyone who has a son/nephew/etc who is into airplanes.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better..........2007-02-23

I wish I could give this movie a better rating but I saw it on cable a little while ago and it set me thinking. My problem is that the movie is a bit too prosaic and formulaic. It suffers from a weak script. Most of the crew are the clean-cut, all American boys from the movies of the war era and, as such, they lack definition, individuality and some credibility. The song by Harry Connick seems like a gratuitous addition. Having said that, it was good to see some of the old warbirds in the air and the movie gains life when the mission actually begins.
I took my Dad to see the movie when it was in the theaters. He was an waist gunner on a B-17 in 1943 and I was interested in his reaction. He said he'd seen most of the instances portrayed except the mid-air collision. He also managed to tell me a few more things over the years before he passed: like the time a plane blew up on the ground while being loaded for a mission or the time their tail gunner bailed out after the plane was hit and the communications link was shattered. He also saw men fall to their knees in tears out of fear of the upcoming mission. Anyone who has stood in a B-17 and seen the thin sheet aluminum and bracing that was their protection will realize how naked these men must have felt. They deserve a grittier and more nuanced homage than this film gives them.
It's not that it's a bad film; it's better than the juvenalia of the more recent Pearl Harbor but lacks the strength that made the series Band of Brothers so exceptional.

Re-creating the role she originated in Philip Barry's wickedly witty Broadway play, Katharine Hepburn stars as the spoiled and snobby socialite Tracy Lord in this sparkling 1940 screen adaptation of The Philadelphia Story, one of the great romantic comedies from the golden age of MGM studios. Applying her impossibly high ideals to everyone but herself, Tracy is about to marry a stuffy executive when her congenial ex-husband (Cary Grant), arrives to protect his former father-in-law from a potentially scandalous tabloid exposé. In an Oscar-winning role, James Stewart is the scandal reporter who falls for Tracy as her wedding day arrives, throwing her into a dizzying state of premarital jitters. Who will join Tracy at the altar? Snappy dialogue flows like sparkling wine under the sophisticated direction of George Cukor in this film that turned the tide of Hepburn's career from "box-office poison" to glamorous Hollywood star. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Katharine Hepburn reprises her triumphant Broadway role as a spoiled heir on the verge of marrying a snoot...but not if her ex-hubby (Cary Grant) and smitten reporter (James Stewart) can help it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Philadelphia Story.......2007-06-25

George Cukor's pitch-perfect adaptation of Philip Barry's hit play marked a triumphant Hollywood comeback for Kate (having earlier been labeled "box-office poison" by exhibitors), and an Oscar-winning vehicle for up-and-coming star James Stewart, wonderful as a fish out of water in high society. Though overlooked by the Academy, Grant is every bit as good as the raffish C.K., while Hepburn shines in what may be her signature role. Don't miss Roland Young's hilarious turn as naughty Uncle Willie. Sly and sophisticated, this title stands as one of our finest screen comedies.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Aplomb.......2007-06-01

No need to chronicle the miracle that this vehicle wrought in Kate Hepburn's career, sufficing to say that Howard Hughes bought the rights for her and she took it from success on Broadway to Hollywood gold with tremendous aplomb. She insisted on control of director (Cukor) and co-stars (Grant and Stewart) and her gambit paid big dividends. The rest is movie magic.

Hepburn portrays a Main Line divorcee on the eve of Wedding Number Two. Grant is Husband Number One and Stewart is the initially-under-cover reporter there to chronicle `An Intimate Day with a Society Bride' for "Spy" magazine. Hepburn's character is the one to watch as she grows from a distant goddess to a flesh and blood woman, but it is fair to say that one and all undergo some pretty rooty tooty transformations before The End.

Marvelous moments abound--it is playwright Philip Barry's masterpiece, after all. Favorites...

Hepburn and Virginia Weidler's send up of the Main Line drawl, complete with the lockjaw pose is dead on--people in Bryn Mawr and Chester County Horse Country still talk like that if you can believe it.

Droll moments include the witticisms about South Bend (Hepburn says vaguely, "It sounds like dancing, doesn't it?), about Duluth (Hepburn again: Duluth. That must be a lovely spot. It's west of here, isn't it?), of Stewart's friends ("Of whom you have many, I'm sure...").

And Weidler's over the top rendition of "Lydia, the Tattooed Lady".

The witty repartee holds throughout the film, and at one point, perhaps the key moment in the film, Barry gives Hepburn's character Tracy Lord the best line in this or any film, "The time to make up one's mind about someone is (pause) never."

The ending is one of the three or four ideal wedding endings in film, along with "The Graduate", "It Happened One Night" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral".

P. S. The play was remade as the musical "High Society" with Bing, Blue Eyes and soon-to-be Princess Grace, which is not half bad. But "The Philadelphia Story" is better, and among the best 20 films of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Brillance!.......2007-04-24

You cannot say enough good things about this movie!! Cary Grant was I think snubbed for the Oscar but Jimmy Stewart well deserved it too!! Dinah (the litttle sister) is hilarious! Katharine Hepburn of course shines and her presence is what makes the movie so fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Still Terrific After All These Years.......2007-04-16

#51 on the American Film Institute's Top 100 List, "The Philadelphia Story" is a 1940 comedy that has never lost its popularity. It's the film that rekindled Katherine Hepburn's then-ailing film career, the only movie James Stewart ever won an Oscar for, and a movie that Cary Grant demanded a huge salary for. Surprisingly, the movie is actually funny to this very day.

Grant plays C.K. Dexter Haven, a millionaire who has recently separated from his wife Tracy Lord (Hepburn). Now, Tracy is getting remarried and Dexter has hired two people from the gossip magazine Spy to cover the marriage. They are Macaulay Connor (Stewart) and Elizabeth Imbrie. Neither one is happy to be there. Connor is on the verge of quitting his job at the Spy, as he fancies himself a writer and is sick of writing gossip articles. Elizabeth fancies herself a painter and is sick of taking photographs of rich people. Pretty soon, Connor finds himself falling for Tracy as Dexter finds himself falling for her again.

Stewart deserved his Oscar as he steals every scene he's in. As I said, the film is still very funny to this day (a rarity, since comedy has changed so much over the years). Anyway, "The Philadelphia Story" is not my favorite film of all time. It think there's plenty of films on the list placed beneath it that are much better, but "The Philadelphia Story" is a charming film that is definitely worth your time.

The Waltons: The Complete Fourth Season finds life on Walton's Mountain changing in some significant ways. The first episode, "The Sermon," sets the tone with a story in which oldest son John-Boy Walton (Richard Thomas) is asked by the local preacher (John Ritter) to substitute for him at one Sunday service. Meanwhile, John-Boy's mother, Olivia (Michael Learned), is asked by the local schoolteacher to fill in for her for a week. Each of these Waltons has doubts that they're up to the task (Olivia has an especially hard time, since her charges include several of her own children). But they persevere, and Olivia finds herself teaching on and off throughout the season. Meanwhile, patriarch John (Ralph Waite) has a midlife crisis that causes him to leave home for a stretch, a cousin of Olivia's comes to grieve the death of her husband, the family closely follows the abdication of King Edward from the throne in England, and musician Jason Walton (Jon Walmsley) has a crisis of confidence as a performer. Special episodes include "The Fighter," starring Cleavon Little as a boxer who takes a paying job working for the Waltons, and whose presence upsets Olivia and Grandma (Ellen Corby). "The Genius" finds John-Boy being asked by his school to supervise a brilliant but socially cold 16-year-old who has to learn a lot about life. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Waltons 4th season.......2007-05-13

As far as the Waltons it was good, but the first disk had 1,2,3 on both sides, and the quality was a little lacking

5 out of 5 stars The Waltons Season Four was Great!.......2007-05-12

This season of our favorite Great Depression family, the Waltons, was one of the best in the whole entire series. Changes in the normal life of everyone increase more and more. New people come and old kin visit. John-boy takes on a challenge in the latter part of the series that will leave Walton's Mountain a beacon calling "Home,, Sweeet, Home!"

3 out of 5 stars Waltons 4th season.......2007-05-09

I enjoy these types of family movies. I especially enjoy the continuing story as the children grow up. I also watched all 9 seasons of Little House On The Prairie. That one was my favorite. I wish the children of today has just 1/2 of the values they did back then.

2 out of 5 stars Great Family Show But Poor Transfer Quality & No Extras.........2007-04-26

Now don't get the wrong impression of my rating because this is an excellent family show and it gets 5 stars it that area, but the 2 rating is my opinion of the poor way that this quality show was put on DVD.. First i noticed that this is a bare bones transfer with no extras but you would think since we are paying good money for these dvds that they would at least make sure the trasnfer quality from film to dvd is excellent, but sadly its not, it seems like there was not much care taken in the transfer process. Let me explain, during the opening music i noticed that it fades in and out something that i did not notice in the previous 3 seasons. Also on a few episodes i just watched, it appears like there was little cleaning up of the film done before transfer to get rid of all the spots or floaters that sometimes appear on older films, it would have been nice if the time was taken to remaster the film for good dvd viewing. It also would have been nice to include a closed caption feature for the hearing impaired for those who need it. In closing i really enjoy watching the Waltons and I am very pleased to have it on DVD, but if a little more care and extra work was put into the transfer process this could be so much better and i would feel i am getting the most for my money spent...

4 out of 5 stars GREAT SHOW BARE BONES RELEASE IS A BUMMER.......2007-04-18

The fifth season of Hogan's Heroes aired in 1969 with a divisive war tearing the nation apart, and decades later there is still comfort to be taken from Col. Hogan (Bob Crane) and company coming up with daring, ingenious, and outrageous plots to sabotage the German war effort from their base of operations in Stalag 13. Ineffectual commandant Col. Klink (Werner Klemperer, a two-time Emmy-winner, and a nominee for this season) may have Hogan's number as "a scheming troublemaker," but he is as ever clueless about Hogan's elaborate operations. To the outrage of visiting German brass, Hogan still has the run of the camp and still makes with the impudent wisecracks about "the little sign painter" and "Himmler with the laughing face." Getting information to the Underground and blowing up German installations remains job 1, but Hogan and his men--hustler Newkirk (Richard Dawson), LeBeau (Robert Clary), explosives expert Carter (Larry Hovis), and radio operator Kinch (Ivan Dixon)--must also ensure that the bumbling Klink is not transferred ("At Last-Schultz Knows Something," a great episode for co-star John Banner) or executed ("The Kommandant Dies at Dawn"), lest a more savvy or ruthless officer replace him. Hogan's Heroes caught considerable flack from critics for its lighthearted portrayal of life in a P.O.W. camp, but between the punchlines, effective moments of suspense and intrigue remind viewers that Hogan's work is no laughing matter. In "Unfair Exchange," the men kidnap General Burkhalter's sister, Gertrude "the Bride of Frankenstein" Linkmeyer (the great Kathleen Freeman) to exchange her for the Allied Agent who allowed herself to be captured to save Hogan and his men from discovery by the Gestapo. In its penultimate season, Hogan's Heroes is still a great escape, although, as Gertrude tells him, "Colonel Hogan, you've been here too long." --Donald Liebenson

Description

The inmates of a German World War II Prisoners of War camp conduct espionage and sabotage campaign right under the noses of their warders. While the enemy is often gullible, easily fooled or downright incompetent - the real strength of Hogan's men are the elaborate ruses and sometimes dangerous lengths they will go to complete their mission.

The war was on for 5 years and so was Hogan's Heroes. It was a shame we would never hear Klink utter "HOGAN!" or Shultz say "I see nothing...nothing" I guess the powers that be had decided that it was time. Unfortunatley we never got a chance to see the end of the war for Hogan and the crew. Just to see the look on Klinks face when he would have discovered what went on. But it is gone. Using the immortal words of Major Hochstter "BAHH!"

5 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for the complete set.......2007-07-03

The complete set of six seasons was well worth the wait. I saw Season Six at Walmart and almost bought it there but when I found the complete set on Amazon, it was one of those, "now's the time" purchases (wincing as I clicked the purchase button...) ;^D

You will fine all the episodes very entertaining with lots of healthy laughs. It is really neat watching my kids enjoy the program as much as I have and still do.

The problem is tearing them away from small installments (they wanted to watch four in one sitting). 168 episodes is alot but most of us who saw the originals and re-runs had to wait a week at a time - the wonders of technology today.

Anyhow, the quality of this set is excellent, remastered DVDs, there are a few bonuses on some of the season sets, if there was a negative more bonus material would have been a plus.

Opinion statement: Some say M*A*S*H was the all time hit, Actually I liked Hogan's Heros more and it was more family friendly, very minimal adult-type humor, Hogan's Heros has the type of humor the kids can enjoy, even at their level. Hogan's Heros successful six seasons paved the way for M*A*S*H to become a reality and a success.

It is a good family friendly set and I'll not hesitate to recommend it. It is an investment in some fun moments with you spouse and kids! (...that's 65 cents per episode...)

5 out of 5 stars hogan's heroes.......2007-06-20

I watched heroes when it was first shown in the 60's. I loved it then and I love it now. I have just ordered my 2nd complete set because I have worn out my first. there is nothing more annoying than to have your video break up in the middle of viewing.. I anxiously await receipt of my new heroes. I will be settling in my chair and enjoying.

5 out of 5 stars Colonel Klink? Make that Emmy award Best-Supporting-Actor Werner Klemperer/Klink! & Well deserved was it........2007-06-07

The comedian Gilbert Gottfried (AF-lac!) has a bit about the least likely idea to make a sitcom about. Picture this: A Nazi-era German prisoner-of-war camp; allied inmates behind barbed-wire. It's a Comedy! Yeah, right. But somehow it made it into production & now it's out on DVD, finally. I'm not saying it's the greatest sitcom or anything, but it's a vaudevillian incarnation; a treat of the first order, and can be watched again and again---the test of a genuinely whimsical show. ("Family Ties" & "Barney Miller," amongst others, were funny when they were running, but are not at all interesting to me anymore, for instance.) Quite possibly, the thing that saves "Hogan's Heroes" is that it wasn't contemporary when it came out. The plots of this WW2-set show run the gamut of the allied inmates trying to swipe or disable anything of a military nature that passes through the camp, to kidnapping German scientists, blowing up bridges miles from camp, and impersonating German officers in town...as they utilize escape tunnels to leave and return to camp, as well as employing hidden radio transmitters to send and receive coded messages from London, and most importantly play on Camp Kommandant Colonel Klink's gullibility to make him an unwitting partner in some measure, in their exploits. TV programs set in specific historical periods are simply not as easily "dated" as other shows are (think of "Sanford & Son," "Growing Pains; even dramas the likes of "Hill St. Blues"). "M*A*S*H," for instance, is still a great show and, like Hogan's Heroes," is holding up well. Exaggerated characters helps too---think of Hawkeye Pierce's Groucho Marx-inspired one-liners in "M*A*S*H." Colonel Klink likewise is a standout, and is thus (in my opinion at least) the real star of "Hogan's Heroes;" in the same sense that Gracie Allen was more essential than George Burns in making the great Burns & Allen combination successful. Klink's flamboyantly delicious delivery of his oft-repeated (of course, ridiculously untrue) lines, admonishing anyone and everyone that "There has Nev-er been an escape from Stalag 13!" or "This is the toughest P-O-W camp in all of Germany," never get old. Even funnier is when he cannot even finish such lines before being told to shut up by General Burkhalter or other visiting superior officers. While you're at it too, there's another show very much like this one. It was made in the the UK and is called "Allo, Allo." It's also set in WW2 Europe, but this time in a German-occupied French town. Akin to "Hogan's Heroes" the Germans are likewise obtuse while the French resistance attempts to persuade the same unfortunate cafe owner each episode to facilitate their wacky schemes along the lines of Hogan's men. Check out some reviews of it. If you're a fan of "Hogan's Heroes" you'll probably think it a riot; I do. Cheers!

4 out of 5 stars Good things come to those who wait.......2007-05-15

It took me years to assemble something close to a complete collection of Hogan's Heroes episodes from the 1990's television re-runs. It was a labor of love that paid off well in the years before DVD's became the dominant medium in home entertainment. Due to the limited recording capacity of the video cassette it was never cost efficient (ie profitable) for studios release entire television series on the commercial market. In the case of Hogan's Heroes there was of course the unwieldy and expensive Columbia House video cassette collection, a complete set of which would periodically come up for auction on Ebay. But unless you are a bone fide collector of Hogan's Heroes memorabilia I certainly hope you didn't manage to outbid somebody for that!

Of all the wonderful television classics now released to DVD, none excites me more than Hogan's Heroes. I have been patiently awaiting the day when the complete series would become available and I am thrilled that the day is at long last upon us. While it is undoubtedly true that greater care and attention to detail could have been devoted to the presentation and packaging of this one of a kind television classic (DVD extras, an unedited pilot episode, photographs, interviews, etc.), I have not come to expect that the heads of most major studios be interested in anything other than a quick buck. One need only witness the decimation of TV classics like WKRP In Cincinnati and Happy Days which resulted from studios unwillingness to pay for the rights to include the original music from these series in the DVD releases, to find clear evidence of endemic negligence toward consumers.

Fortunately music copyright royalties are not an issue with the DVD release of Hogan's Heroes. Fans everywhere can now enjoy, complete and without interruption, any and every episode of the heroics of Hogan and his men in the comfort of their own home. If this isn't modern living then I don't know what is!

After being murdered for quitting his role as a ruthless yet moral government assassin, Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is sent to Hell, where he makes a pact with the demon Malebolgia--if Simmons is allowed see his lover, Wanda, again, he will agree to lead the demon's armies to storm the gates of Heaven. Transformed into a superhuman entity with shape-shifting powers and quick regeneration capabilities, Simmons (soon to be dubbed "Spawn" by Malebolgia's crony, The Violator) returns to Earth and attempts to reunite with Wanda, not knowing that five years have passed. He also seeks revenge on his former boss and killer, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen), who has made a deal with The Violator to develop a lethal virus to take over the world, where Wynn is promised to be king.

Spawn wages an inner battle between good and evil as he tries to come to terms with selling his soul and what it could mean for humankind. Despite excellent effects and great potential, Spawn seems to come up short. While White certainly displays verve in his characterization of the twisted hero, he cannot overcome some forced dialogue. On the flip side, the usually engaging John Leguizamo portrays the sinister Violator--an evil monster masquerading as a rotund, weird-looking clown--as an irritating lackey who spews overbearing sarcasm and incessantly banal one-liners. Admitted, many of Spawn's action sequences are fun, and the transitions effectively brisk, but more could have been done to explore how Simmons grapples with his humanity in these daunting circumstances. But if you want sizzling action sequences and digital effects, this film should keep you happy. --Bryan Reesman

4 out of 5 stars pixelated photos on the cover art box.......2007-07-02

Just received this dvd from amazon, and I wanted to point out that all the pictures in the cover box are pixelated!!! I just found this strange and wanted to share it with anybody that is considering in buying this product.

4 out of 5 stars A Super Hero brother with Attitude. Need I say more?.......2007-04-06

Gotta support the brother. I think Michael Jai White is a great fighting and is wonderful in this movie. I also love the character of Spawn. A black superhero with an attitude. Wish we had more. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars I own Spawn on VHS - now purchasing DVD because I loved it!!!.......2007-04-03

I decided to express my view on the Spawn movie, VHS, after I read some pathetic reviews posted here; one compared it to Spiderman, YUCH! {First let me say the Spiderman movie sucked. I found it too cartoonish and juvenile with exposed cow-teats from the get-go to sexually arouse and harass children, adolescents and immature adults.]

Now on to Spawn. I loved Spawn, VHS. I found the CGI, bluescreen {whatever) to be well done BUT NOT OVERDONE. I found the movie content to be mature and comical. I also enjoyed seeing an African American in the title role of a quality film; which is certainly not the norm.

Summarizing, I DO NOT enjoy seeing women expose their private parts for sexual harassment [that's what ADULT saloons and burlesque is for] and I do not enjoy cartoonish film [animated]; I prefer action movies to be REAL ACTION, Ala Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, WELL DONE!

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Genre.......2007-03-20

To date, this is the best comic book-to-movie conversion. It retains it's comic book feel. In this sense, it could be compared with Pulp Fiction's portrayal of the pop "dime-novel." The banal one-liners can be seen as a plus in this regard. The special effects are very good, and ohhhh, that cape! If you like movies about comic book characters, don't miss this one. It's at least as good as Spiderman, another good example of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!.......2007-01-31

The whole family loved this movie. The special effects were great. If you like the Marvel comic movies you will want to see this one.
