Fans of The Great Escape and The Longest Yard will cheer venerable director John Huston's rousing 1981 adventure that pits Allied prisoners of war against their German captors in a soccer match. Michael Caine, who starred in Huston's The Man Who Would Be King, heads an international all-star cast as true-Brit John Colby, a former soccer champion, who heads the rag-tag squad. Max Von Sydow costars as the humane German officer who proposes the match, improbably staged for maximum propaganda impact in a stadium in Paris. As the Allied team, which includes real-life soccer legends Pele and Bobby Moore, practices, the officers' only goal is an audacious half-time escape. Sylvester Stallone is somewhat out of his league as the American determined to join the team. As an actor, Pele may not be on the same playing field as his Oscar-winning costars, but he is thrilling to watch as he executes some awesome, game-winning kicks. --Donald Liebenson

You don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985 live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L. Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-7 set.
Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be, er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids). She wakes up in the land of Oz, now in tatters, and searches for its king, the Scarecrow. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvelous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. --Doug Thomas

With every twist in the yellow brick road, you'll find awesome new surprises and special effects that will astound you!

Not Bad.......2007-06-16
I checked this out at the library and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The dated special effects give it a more gothic feel than the original, and the director's interpretation of the characters is messed up. All in all, worth seeing a few times, but nothing to write home about.
a favorite in spots, beautifully filmed.......2007-05-23
When Return To Oz came out in 1985 I was excited as I am an Oz fan and enjoy the Oz books. I was wondering how they would combine the two Oz Books, Ozma of Oz and The Land of Oz and I have to say at the time I was pleased and saw the film several times. That was years ago and now I see the movie a bit more critically. Many who have read the books and seen the film say it is closer to Baum and yes in parts it is. I love every moment Dorothy is in Oz. Tik-tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and Billina all come to life and are fun to see. Dorothy saves the day and manages to fight the Nome King by just being the strong little girl she is. If this film just took place in Oz it would be perfect, well almost perfect. To my mind the director made a mistake not having the scarecrow and Tin woodman through out the film. Few people knew about TikTok and Jack Pumpkinhead and just assumed they were rip offs of the Scarecrow and Tinwoodman. A continual presence in the film would have helped. Then there is the beginining of the film and it is a nightmare. Why would Aunt Em send Dorothy in for shock treatment? Did she really feel she was sick? To make a long story short they could have made a better introduction for a very good film which would have been much more appealing due to the changes. If this movie were a sandwich I would say the meat or center is good but the bread needs work. Still I enjoy it even today and feel it could have done better.
One of my FAV movies!.......2007-05-15
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I just purchased it recently and I still love it. this is a classic movie that will be with my family forever.
childhood favorite.......2007-05-07
another great movie that i grew up watching, the scary parts are still a little freaky and i just loved this version as a child. It is very good for opening the imagination, and i will cherish it for a long time!
Great for all ages.......2007-04-05
I first saw this movie as a child, age 8, and ever since I have loved this movie, for the most important fact that it is a darker, and more interesting, adaptation of the Oz story. The dark side of this movie may scare children, as it did myself, but it is not overwhelming or too extreme. In fact, this movie strikes a fine and perfect balance on the darker elements, so that a typical child, over the age of 6 or so, will be scared in a good way. This is because the darker sides of this film are represented by things that children really should watch out for in real life, such as stranger adults, and the temptations to wander to far off from home. The characters are unique and original, and the set designs are a visual treat. This movie is a must see for people who want more substance than the overrated sappy 'The Wizard of Oz' movie with the pathetically timid Judy Garland. In this movie, Fairuza Balk plays a much stronger and compelling Dorothy, who we can respect and believe in. Overall, this movie is far better than any other Oz movie in terms of its dedication to the original books.

A 26-episode World War II documentary, Victory at Sea is one of the most important series in the history of television. Made in 1952, the show was a huge success, winning many major awards and even spawning albums featuring the orchestral score by Richard Rodgers, best known for his musicals with Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II. Produced with the full cooperation of the U.S. Navy, each 26-minute program consists of black-and-white wartime film set to a narration by Leonard Graves. The two years leading up to America's entry into the war are dismissed in episode one, while the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor gets a show of its own, the raid depicted in a brilliantly edited montage that almost certainly contains "docu-drama" footage. Each episode contains at least one powerful stand-alone sequence in the tradition of Serge Eisenstein (Battleship Potemkin), these action-suspense set-pieces giving the programs an urgent, surprisingly modern feel. Indeed, the emphasis is at least as much on entertainment as information, the factual content delivered in poetic narration, the score transforming the war into a more than usually serious Hollywood adventure. The documentaries are nothing if not wide-ranging, covering parts of the land war despite the title, and including everything from the Atlantic convoys and U-boat "Wolfpacks" to war in Alaska, the South Atlantic, and the Far East, the Pacific War, and the Fall of Japan. There is an attempt to include other nations--certainly the D-Day episode acknowledges the British far more than Saving Private Ryan--but inevitably the focus is on America's war. The very dated narration gives a fascinating insight into how America saw WWII in the early 1950s, while the dynamic cutting and often genuinely remarkable wartime footage make Victory at Sea still gripping today. Twenty years later, Granada's The World at War would become the definitive television WWII history, but this release offers a unique opportunity to see a series of great importance from the very early days of television. --Gary S. Dalkin

Dramatic Documentary.......2007-05-30
Since 1952, when NBC television first aired "Victory at Sea," the 26 half-hour programs have been repeatedly shown on television and finally released on home video. Admittedly, the sound quality of the narration, music, and sound effects is typical of television in the early 1950s, but the visual impact of the actual wartime footage remains quite powerful.
For those who want to enjoy a true high fidelity version of much of the music Richard Rodgers and Robert Russell Bennett produced, the RCA Victor albums (first released in the early 1960s) remain the best source. It is known that Rodgers composed the melodies in a piano version, then turned it over to Bennett to arrange and orchestrate. The albums take the 13 hours of music, which repeated themes, and present them in a cohesive and concise version. Bennett conducted the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, which was drawn from the Symphony of the Air, itself a reorganization of Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra. Back in 1952, when the documentary was prepared, Bennett used the actual NBC Symphony, presumably with the blessings of the Maestro, who was a big fan of early television as well as Broadway musicals.
The main focus in the 26 episodes is on the American Navy's involvement in World War II. In editing millions of feet of archival footage, NBC assembled programs which captured not only the naval and aerial battles but the lighter moments when the sailors, pilots, and crew waited for the inevitable deadly combat to begin or resume. The most important elements of the war are vividly represented here in sharp black and white.
Yes, "The World of War" was probably more comprehensive and utilized some of the rare color footage of the war, but this was the first television documentary to chronicle the historic events, complete with glimpses of the famous and infamous leaders -- Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Tojo, and Stalin. When you see the real figures, instead of actors portaying them, you recognize their unique and remarkable qualities.
The visual images remain quite powerful on the videos. To enjoy the brilliance of the music, listen to the CDs for the outstanding musical performances by the New York musicians.
Is it just me, or.......2007-05-25
...has the History Channel version been cut? I have been watching a version played on PBS that has scenes that my version does not possess, or so it seems. I am old enough to have watched the originals, and still enjoy each segment, and especially the Score. Sound being the weakest feature (IMO) cost it a star.
5 Stars for original documentary - 2 stars for DVD transfer.......2007-05-13
Excellent documentary about our brave fighting men of WWII. Anyone who's ever wondered why the depression/WWII generation is often refered too as "The Greatest Generation" need only to watch this documentary to find out. Made before the America hating looney left took over our media, when it was still okay to be unashamedly patriotic.
Unfortunately, the audio transfer to DVD was badly botched. The narrator's voice is barely audible when the musical score is played at a normal volume. You basically have to blast the musical score to make out what the narrator is saying.
Maybe I'll try watching it again with the surround sound turned off. Sometimes the transfer doesn't work very well when they try to take an old program that was origninally done in mono and transfer it to a surround sound DVD.
Disturbing and boring.......2007-05-12
This is classic cold war propaganda about good over evil. Of course, the U.S. is the good. Some of the "reconstructions" are hokey. It is quite boring at times. However, in places, the producers had the guts to show some pretty graphic images of the violence of war. The show does not include much detail about battles and strategy.
The film quality is ok, after all, it is 60 years old.
Don't overstate audio concern.......2007-03-25
The so-called audio problem is NOT a big deal. The sound on the set can be adjusted upward a bit without changing any Digital TV settings. I took a chance and purchased this series, and I am not disappointed. I first saw it as a boy and the impact of seeing it today is the same as then. I suppose that if you are an audiophile purist you can jump up and down. But while you are jumping, I enjoy the series.

Description
Victory at Sea, a 26-episode series on World War II, represented one of the most ambitious documentary undertakings of early network television.
The series premiered on the last Sunday of October 1952, and subsequent episodes played each Sunday afternoon through May 1953. Each half-hour installment dealt with some aspect of World War II naval warfare and highlighted each of the sea war's major campaigns. That drama was enhanced by the program's sententious voice-over narration and by Richard Rogers's stirring musical score.

Customer Reviews:
It's all here, this version is NOT abridged!.......2007-06-19
. . . just watched this incredible series and while the eps are not pristine they are more than watchable and EVERYTHING is here, contrary to what another poster incorrectly implied. (Each of the 26 episodes has a running time of apprx. 26:20; do the math!)
"And now" The Drama of World War II at Sea.......2007-06-17
The drama of World War II at sea with the NBC symphony orchestra and narration written by journalists. Only mishap is the D-Day episode where the chapters seem to have been reversed: they show the cement Mulberry docks being destroyed by storm and then show the actual D-Day landings.
I don't know why a reviewer complained the 26-part series is abridged. Each "half-hour" espisode is about 26 minutes. I presume the missing 4 minutes are the commercials.
This is an awesome bargain........2007-06-12
Victory at Sea is an awesome series and for $10 you can't beat it.
Rememberance of Things Past.......2007-05-09
I watched this series on TV years ago with my Dad (a WW2 combat vet) and wanted to remember our time together, so I bought this DVD. I read that some folks had trouble with the audio. I took the advice of one of the other reviewers and disabled all of the DOLBY, etc on my TV and was completely satisfied with this very inexpensive version.
I would recommend it to anyone interested in WW2 history.
Vikctory At Sea, the series.......2007-03-09
Believe it or not, this version is far better than the one released by the History Channel two years ago! The reason I say that is this; The sound was terrible. You could not hear the narrator for the music and yet this series cost over $55.00 vice $10.00 for the one I am reviewing. I have always had good quality from Amazon and always will!!!!

BIG YAWN .......2007-05-12
I guess I was expecting much more.
I don't know when you watch an instructional video on sex it would seem to me that being able to view the male and female sex organs would be a necessary part of the visual effect. All I saw were two naked bodies with just occasional glimpses of pubic hairs and some sexual positions described.
If you want to see some new positions preformed than buy this video. If you want to see some new positions that will excite you as well -- KEEP LOOKING because you won't find it here.
Disappointment.......2007-04-25
If you are looking for some ideas maybe this is ok but visual execution is not inspiring (video quality is ok and people are good looking): some positions are clearly acted not done actually. I sold this away after couple of days. I've seen better done under category "kama sutra"
Yawn.......2007-02-10
For such an interesting subject one really hoped it would have been more interesting...
This is the DVD to get..........2007-01-15
After some horrifying experiences looking at educational dvds that didn't deliver, this DVD was a very welcome suprise. It is very tastefully done, has attractive models, and is very educational without being tacky or pornographic.
I can't fault anything about this, and would certainly purchase another in the series. This is the type of DVD that I wish I had as a teenager curious about sex, but is also very relevant as a thirty-something year old. The positions include both regular and advanced, and have tips on how to increase stimulation and cautions to watch for. It has three main series - male superior, female superior, and a beautiful set of positions using seated positions on a kitchen chair.
The best thing about this DVD is that opposed to other DVDs that you watch once, get the ideas and then have to pass along to a friend, this is one that you can keep as something tasteful to play in the background of the bedroom.
Just ok...........2006-10-05
No, totally not a porn video. You won't see the man's pubic area. It is just a video that gives you ideas if you are bored w/ that one position you are always having.
I somehow feel strange when I see one guy having sex on a coffee table w/ the woman. His leg rubbed again the table and it is not hurting?? Some positions are hard. Creative? just ok. Gives me new ideas? well.... i don't remember, not really that impressive. I guess I know most of the positions.

Disappointed.......2007-05-26
I was expecting to learn the art of the whole process but the video only show the intercourse position. There's no lesson on foreplay eg: how to rub or touch your partner or where to touch first and etc.
Worth it.......2007-02-12
You can find all of these positions (and more) just by searching the internet. But it is really nice to just press play on the dvd player. They offer a little instruction that is helpful as well. The awesome sex we had right after viewing this video was worth the price alone.
Disappointed.......2007-01-02
I bought this video for some new ideas and from what i read in other reviews, for tasteful erotic entertainment that isn't hardcore porn. We watched the whole thing and found it rather boring. None of the positions were really "new" to us and there was no foreplay at all. The couples didn't appear to be enjoying themselves, it was just very mechanical. And did i mention, there was no foreplay? That's no fun.
Five Stars!!!.......2006-11-29
When it comes to sex there are the few basic positions that everyone seems to use. Missionary, doggy, spooning, and oh my favorite...woman on top.
Although the video focuses on the basics, they do build on these by adding variations to each of these as well as add seated and side by side positions.
Additional pointers are provided by the hosts on how to prolong sex, how to make sex better, as well as different techniques to make your partner scream for joy.
Filming was tasteful. The models were attractive. And the presentation of the information was straight forward.
Overall, I give this DVD 5 Stars.
Covers all Positions.......2006-11-28
My boyfriend and I really enjoyed every minute of this DVD. It covers everything: Man on Top, Women on Top, Seated, Side by Side, and Rear Entry. The two hosts explained everything from getting into the position to tips on how to make each position better. The video was elegantly done and it gave us a lot of great ideas for having "fun" in the bedroom. We tried all 27 positions and if I say it's a definite must buy for any couple.

Customer Reviews:
Exciting movie for all.......2007-05-15
Great family movie for soccer players and fans, and for everyone who like to see the underdog have success. Music is wonderful. Setting is in prisoner of war camp during WWII - subtle messages of values and honor throughout.
"I think we can win this!".......2007-03-22
This is the greatest sports movie of all time. Sorry to those of us who loved "Hoosiers." This movie is stirring in so many ways. I saw this movie in the theater back in 1981 as a 10 year old who loved American Soccer, and to this day, it still gives me goosebumps. The soccer part of the movie is so insignificant to me now, though.
Don't let Sly Stallone's presence in this movie deter you. The movie is directed by the legendary John Huston who made such classic films as "The Maltese Falcon," "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," "The Asphalt Jungle" and "The African Queen," and it's main character is played by world-reknowned actor Michael Caine. Stallone plays the lone American character in the film, and is a dreadful soccer player. He only makes "the team" because he has connections to the French Underground who are trying to help him escape the WWII POW camp he and the other characters are held captive in. He also has a knack for catching the ball...
The movie takes place during WWII, and, as other reviewers have stated, the story centers around a game which one of the German Officers decides to sponsor: The German National team vs. "The Allies" (a team made up of mostly English and European-born prisoners). The plot thickens when they decide to hold the game in German-occupied Paris in order to break the spirits of the Allies. The players on the prisoner team don't want Stallone's character to play, but he is their ticket out of prison, so they reluctantly decide to allow him onto the team.
The greatest part of this movie involves the final 30 minutes of the film. The game reaches halftime with the Germans up 4-1. It is obvious to the prisoners at this point that the referees have been paid off to let the Germans win the game, but they managed a fantastic goal just before halftime giving them a bit of momentum. The plan is to escape at halftime, as the French Resistance has dug out a tunnel underneath the prisoners' locker room. In a moving sequence of events, the prisoners enter the tunnel, only to have Pele and a few other characters talk the entire team out of escaping.
"We can win this!" yells one of the players. "What did he say?" calls out Caine's character. "I said, I think we can win this!" Then Pele tells Stallone's character that England has never beaten Germany in soccer...ever. The players would rather spend the rest of their lives in a POW camp and play out the second half rather than leave now and not finish the game. Michael Caine informs Stallone that they can't play the game without him, so if he escapes, the whole team has to go with him. Quickly, the scene cuts to the field, as many fans in the stadium know that the prisoners were to escape. Unexpectedly, the prisoners return to the field to play the second half.
The ending is incredible. The prisoners come out ferociously intent on winning the game. Representing England, the French Resistance, and the entire Allied world, the players score 3 straight goals to tie the game, including a signature Pele bicycle kick, and the fans in the stands do the unthinkable--they risk their lives and begin singing the French National anthem, which is illegal (considered treasonous at the time). Trying to aid the Germans, the referee calls a foul as time expires to give them one last chance, through a penalty kick, to win the game. In a scene that seems to take as long as the step sequence in "The Untouchables," The German takes the free kick, Stallone stops it, the game ends in a tie, and the crazed French fans bust down the fences and storm the field. The prisoners are quickly given trench coats, and they escape as the masses break down the gates to the stadium and storm out into the streets of Paris. The allstar cast included the aforementioned guys plus reknowned soccer stars Mike Summerbee, Co Prins, Osvaldo Ardiles and Bobby Moore.
The historical significance of this film is remarkable. Viewing the film, you truly feel the solidarity of the Allies, both on the soccer field and also during the war. Ironically enough, in real life the English actually won the World Cup in 1950, shortly after WWII, it's only World Cup championship to date, defeating powerhouse Germany along the way. This is a great movie for anyone who is a war buff, soccer fan, or just loved to watch Hogan's Heroes!
"Goal!!!!!!!".......2006-09-11
An outstanding WWII-cum-sports movie. Stallone plays his role as an American POW well, Michael Caine as the captain of a British POW football team is superb and the soccer action itself is brilliant, what with Pele, Moore & other soccer greats in the action. The movie was previously released as "Escape to Victory". It was not a great commercial success, but it tugs at the heartstrings, and is well made, with an excellent script, and good production values. Well worth a buy.
Great Football and Great story.......2006-08-16
i think anyone interested in WWII or Football (soccer) has to watch this movie, you really get great performance from Michael Caine and Max Von Sidow. These guys really make you believe the story, which for anyone who ever played football soccer for even a minute and got the bit of enjoyment, it wont be hard to follow and this movie will be excilarating. Aside the story of propaganda and Stallone as the stubborn hero, the team really comes together, which is another reason why this movie is good for both afficionados, sport enthusiast and WWII interested
Excellent football and excellent movie.......2006-08-09
For the time that this movie was made it has one of the best visuale effects that i have witnessed in a long time. It was one of the most entertaining and intrigueing movies that i have witnessed in a while. It really captured the moment of the games.Although the movie was great i still think that they should have stuck to more of the historical accuracy of the Dynamo team in Kiev,Ukraine.

Based on the Joseph Conrad story "Amy Foster," this swirlingly romantic melodrama tells the story of a Polish sailor (Vincent Perez) shipwrecked and washed ashore on the English coast in the 19th century. Found by a servant girl, Amy (Rachel Weisz), who is a village outcast, he is considered retarded because no one can understand what he says. But slowly, through Amy's love and the doctor's tutelage, the sailor learns enough English to decide he wants to make an honest woman out of Amy. Which doesn't sit well with the disapproving villagers, who don't like Amy. Even the doctor, who has a fondness for the sailor, has a blind spot when it comes to the servant girl. Strong performances and gritty period settings lift this film above bodice-ripper status to something richer. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Excellent movie based on a classic novel.......2007-03-18
Adapting a novel of J Conrad is not easy; yet this movie achieved a magnificent result. Interesting, moving with an excellent script this is a movie that makes you ponder about how to value individuals when they are differetn from the group, and how accpetance of diversuty is inherent to all human "civilized" cultures.
Dream-haunting...soul-stoking........2007-02-15
If you like a film,
where all the characters have so much depth
you can empathize with their actions
based on their experiences and circumstances.
A film that spikes your imagination, haunts your dreams,
challenges your judgements
and speaks volumes on an ever exponentially increasing number
of subjects.
Then, my friend you've found "true gold"
in this cinematic treasure.
Until you walk on you someone else's shoes,
can you really understand that person....
and love that person.
The truth allows us to forgive, to love and gives us to courage
to change. This and many more issues this
seemingly simple movie grapples with
will take you on a quantum leap to understanding
the phenomenon it truly is to be human.
Layered with metaphors concerning religion,
fear, persecution
all because of what?.
See for yourself,
grow and be swept into love!
Good....Could have been better.......2006-12-21
I really enjoyed this movie however one of the more interesting parts of the movie was not fully developed. Ian Mckellen's character was supposed to be homosexual .....he is in love with Vincent Perez's character. It was a pretty subtle subplot in the movie and while I was watching it I was thinking....hmmmm is Ian Mckellen's character gay? I read Roger Ebert's review of the movie on [...]. In his article Ebert says the movie could have been more interesting if this plot was further developed....I agree. I really enjoyed the movie but I thought Ian Mckellen's character was very interesting and if his desires were further explored it could have turned this fairly ordinary romance movie into an extraordinary movie.
A beautiful movie.......2006-11-04
This is a beautiful story with great acting. The music is wonderful. Highly recommended!
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart........2006-09-11

Description
In this fascinating and informative DVD, best-selling author, medical anthropologist and shaman-healer of the Inka tradition Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., introduces viewers to the luminous energy field that surrounds and informs the physical body like a blueprint of life. Unveiling the secret of ancient shaman-healers, he teaches that many of our physical and psychological problems stem from imprints within our luminous body.
During the course of this DVD, Dr. Villoldo reveals the extraordinary nature of this luminous energy field and how, by understanding its nature, we can actually heal ourselves and each other. Once the luminous field is cleared, Dr. Villoldo explains, true physical and emotional healing can begin.
Trained as a medical anthropologist, Dr. Villoldo left the academic world behind twenty years ago to study among the Inka shamans. It was in the Andes mountains of South America that he discovered the wisdom of the luminous energy field from the indigenous shamans. This ancient knowledge reveals the secret of true heath and happiness.
To aid Dr. Villoldo in explaining the luminous energy field, the paintings of visionary artist Alex Grey are presented. No other artist has depicted the luminous energy field in all of its intricacies as clearly as Alex Grey. Dr. Villoldo's presentation, together with Alex Grey's images help us to gain a deeper perception of the path to spiritual , emotional and physical well-being.
Many of our illnesses, psychological disorders, addictions and failed relationships can be traced to faulty imprints in our luminous energy fields. In this DVD, Dr. Villoldo reveals how to heal and recover from these destructive imprints.
Join Dr. Villoldo, as he travels to the Andes Mountains to learn the secret of the ancient shamans, a secret that can lead all of us to heath, happiness and beauty.
Customer Reviews:
Healing the Luminous Body.......2007-03-18
Although this is only what I consider an introduction to The Inca Healing
methods it provides an important overview with wonderful pictures.
I fully recomend also the books from Dr.Alberto Villoldo especially
Shaman,Healer,Sage......
Healing the Luminous Body.......2007-03-09
It was informative. But, kind of slow starting out. Stay with it and you will be happy you did.
interesting video.......2007-01-15
There are no directions for healing.. only explanations in a general way about this approach. Nicely done though. Just more general, ad for buying Villaldos books or courses.
Healing the Luminous Body.......2006-11-05
A bit shallow I think. It doesn't present Villoldo's work especially good. I've met him on an earlier occasion, and I use his tools in my own practice, but this video doesn't come close to what I think he stands for
Only an Info-mercial.......2006-06-21
This DVD is basically a come-on to entice you to enroll in Villoldo's school. When I read the intro in the Gaiam catalog, where I first saw this video and ordered it, it read as an instructional video. Even on the back of the DVD cover itself there is an inference that it is more than just a presentaion of infomation.
I genuinely thought this was an instructional video and it most definitely is not. I was hugely disappointed. I regret spending the money for this video.
If you're wanting a How-To then pass this one up!
I gave it a one-star rating simply because there wasn't a lower choice.

Even in the 21st century, very few film stars create and define their own genre--and certainly not in the complete way Bette Davis did. The Bette Davis Collection gives an exceptionally good survey of essential Bette, with four of the five films absolute knock-down classics from her long reign at Warner Bros. Davis's personality was so strong that she tended to overpower her directors, but William Wyler was one of the few to maintain his own distinctive style with her, and The Letter (1940) is a triumph for both of them. At a humid Malaysian plantation, Davis kills a man in the brilliant opening sequence, and the remainder is a darkly suggestive unraveling of the complicated explanation.
Dark Victory (1939) and Now, Voyager (1942) would be on anybody's list of most representative Davis pictures. In the former, she's a doomed heiress nobly losing her eyesight, a multiple-handkerchief situation that proved one of her biggest hits. Voyager allows Davis one of her favored techniques (appearing frumpy for at least part of her performance) as a mother-dominated spinster who comes out of her shell. Her match with Paul Henreid--and the music of Max Steiner--turns this into one luscious melodrama.
If Mr. Skeffington (1944) is not as celebrated as those films, it is nevertheless a characteristic Warners work-out. Davis wasn't shy about playing unsympathetic roles, and Fanny Skeffington--vain, selfish, married for practicality--is an exasperating tour de force. She gets good support from Claude Rains as the sensible, adoring husband. The Star (1952) is no classic, but its Pirandellian aspects will appeal to the actress's fans: Bette plays a washed-up Oscar-winning star desperate to get herself back in the public eye (think if it as a less witty postscript to All About Eve). There's some hint the main character is modeled more on Joan Crawford than Bette herself, in which case Davis must have loved playing it.
Extras are modest, with short featurettes giving background on three of the discs, and director Vincent Sherman providing commentary for Mr. Skeffington. But the films themselves, and their neurotically intense star, are quite capable of standing alone. --Robert Horton
Description
The Bette Davis Collection includes 3 new-to-DVD classics, featuring Davis in multiple Emmy-nominated performances as a captivating adulteress, a manipulative beauty, and a former Oscar-winning actress recovering from the end of her career.
Customer Reviews:
Changing my tune.......2007-05-05
As my tagline indicates I am mad about musicals, and I vowed I would never add dramas to my collection because with musicals, you can play the numbers over and over again, like a record, and enjoy. You can never tire of songs, dance and spectacle. But dramas? Once seen, to be put away for years, otherwise you become too familiar with the plot and the initial impact weakens. I revised my thinking with the release of the Bette Davis Collections because I realised that - in keeping with my love of musicals - every Bette Davis movie is a symphony. A symphony of emotions that equals major musical works - grand opera, concertos, and the subtlety of chamber ensembles. I also have a personal connection with "Dark Victory" and "Now Voyager". They were the work of screenwriter Casey Robinson, top Warner Brothers writer of the 30's and 40's, who retired with his Australian wife, Joan, to Sydney and became a close friend. Having heard all the stories, I asked him if Bette was difficult. "She never changed a line," he told me, "she respected a good script." Enough said. I worry a bit about them shoving "The Star" into this collection - it's a lesser vehicle when they could have included "The Old Maid" or "The Sisters"...but that's the deal, huh? It seems 'collections' are an opportunity to offload at least one minor low-budget movie. However, it's still interesting given Bette's typically bravura performance, and it's wonderful that her formidable contribution to cinema is preserved so magnificently. Go see what I think about Collection Two.
The Bette Davis Collection.......2007-02-23
Absolultely must have for any fan. It is great. I love "The Letter".
Regards
BRAVO!.......2007-02-17
My favorite is Mr. Skeffingtion. Talk about a dose of cold hard reality. That psychiatrist was a real trip! Very enjoyable movie.
Fabulous.......2006-12-23
Better is the best and fabulous in this box set. We've never had a better actress.
Bette Davis's Best Movies All In One Simple Box.......2006-11-04
People have often said that Bette Davis is the most versitile and simply the best actress to have come out of Hollywood, and until Meryl Streep came along I would agree with that statement, Bette Davis give remarkable performances in all five of these films, In The Letter, Bette Davis gives one of her finest performances a moody cheating housewife who murders her lover and then claims it was self defence, in Now Voyage she plays the shy and intraverted daughter of a controlling mother, when the mother dies she has trouble coming out of her shell and when she does she finds love, but none of it is that simple, a very good film, extremely good dialogue, all the films in this box set a brilliant and I would recommend these films to anyone that wants to watch a film with real actors that have real talent.

Description

Grandson loves it........2006-11-05
We have racking our brains for older shows that our kids loved for our grandkids. The tv today is simply brainless shy of moral values.
Ernest rocks and our five year old grandson laughs himself silly.
A TERRITYING & TERRIFIC 'ERNEST' MOMENT IN CINEMATIC HISTORY.......2006-10-27
JUST WHAT IS 'ERNEST SCARED STUPID'?
A terrifying and terrific 'Ernest' moment in cinema history. Indeed, 'Ernest Scared Stupid', is rapidly becoming a neo-classic Halloween fairy-tale, featuring the clown-prince of modern slapstick -- the memorable Jim Varney. Though Jim Varney is sorely missed he will live forever within the very special films, like this one, that he presented to a world in dire need of something silly to muse over.
IN A NUTSHELL: JIM VARNEY TEAMS UP AGAIN WITH DIRECTOR/SCREENWRITER JOHN CHERRY
This is a really cute and highly enjoyable Halloween yarn that the entire family can appreciate without being inappropriate for the younger members of the family.
Jim Varney - Ernest P. Worrell
Austin Nagler - Kenny
Shay Astar - Elizabeth
Jonas Moscartolo - Trantor
Ernest Fosselius - Trantor the Troll [Voice]
Eartha Kitt - Old Lady Hackmore
Larry Black - Mayor Murdock
Jackie Welch - Teacher
HERE'S SOMETHING OF THE STORY LINE: [plot spoilers below]
200 years ago in Briarville an direct ancestor of Ernest saved the village from an evil troll and, after trapping, banished to the underworld deep beneath an oak tree which was then being planted.
That would have been the end of the story, as there was only one way for Trantor, the evil troll, to return to menace us on Earth. Essentially, Ernest, as the only decendant of the original Reverend Phinneaus Worrel was the only human who could bring the curse of Trantor back. There was a long list of things Ernest would have to do in order for Trantor to return, which included disturbing the roots of the now 200 year old oak tree, and reciting some old-english jibberish. Naturally, Ernest did just this, never realizing the significance of his acts -- of course!
Trantor, as he did 200 years before, goes about his business of terrorizing and imprisoning the souls of the children, leaving only a wooden facsimile of his victims after their capture. Ernest and his tree house club friends are the only ones who believe that Trantor has returned, with the exception of 'Old Lady Hackmore' [Eartha Kitt], who still has some missing loved ones to retrieve from Trantor's last visit 200 years earlier. Yes, that makes 'Old Lady Hackmore' a really old lady.
The problem is simple, no adults including the mayor and sheriff believe what Ernest is telling them. So Briarville will depend on Ernest and the local pre-teens to defeat Trantor and his invading army. How Ernest and his young friends defeat Trantor is what 'Ernest Scared Stupid' is all about.
ABOUT THE DVD:
Frankly, this DVD is in full-frame and does not play as well as I would have expected. Also, there are NO FEATURES whatsoever, unless you consider close-captioning a Special Feature. That is a real shame because like most of Jim Varney's fans I am anxious to discover whatever I can about the world of 'Ernest' and his films.
BOTTOM LINE: KINDNESS WINS THE DAY AGAIN FOR ERNEST
Ernest has all his ducks lined-up for this epic. He has his usual array of strange mechanical gadgets that don't quite work right, rimshot, his trusty sidekick pup and most of the town's 12 year olds as his closest friends, plus many of Ernest multiple personalities. On top of all this he has Halloween and a scary Troll story that is really well produced, perhaps that slickest Ernest production ever. All of this and funny too without violence, sex or profanity. In fact, the successful conclusion of the film truly demonstrates how kindness rather than hate or violence can win the day.
100 Words on "Ernest Scared Stupid".......2006-08-10
As I sat and watched "Ernest Scared Stupid" (the "Citizen Kane" of Ernest movies) I realized there's something to be said for knowing what you want to do and doing it. That's what Jim Varney did. His Earnest P. Worrell was to the 80's and 90's what the likes of Abbott and Costello, the Three Stooges and the Bowery Boys were to the 40's and 50's: silly, juvenile slapstick brought to you by kooky but lovable characters. Sure they were low budget, flawed and, some might say, just plain stupid, but, why did they have to be anything more? Knowwhutimean?
Hey Vern, It's Halloween!.......2005-10-11
In the sleepy little town of Briarville, an ancient curse is about to be unleashed on the unsuspecting inhabitants. Ernest P., the last surviving Worrell, will unintentionally, and quite stupidly, set loose the evil troll known as Trantor from his sacred prison to visit horror and tragedy on the innocent townsfolk once again. It will then be solely up to Ernest, the lovable and brainless redneck garbage man, to destroy the evil creature once and for all before he transforms all the children of Briarville into wooden dolls on Halloween night!
The late, great Jim Varney shined whenever he played the role of loving and childlike Ernest P. Worrell, and "Ernest, Scared Stupid" is one of his finest moments! In no danger of being declared one of the greatest films ever made, it is nonetheless highly enjoyable, as any Ernest film should be. Perfect for the annual Halloween viewing at the very least! Together with his dog, Rimshot, some high-spirited neighborhood kids, and the advice of the mysterious "Old Lady" Hackmore, Ernest takes on his deadly foe headfirst, with all the careless and steadfast determination the character is known for, and with all the humor too! Easily among the best of the Ernest films, "Ernest, Scared Stupid" mixes familiar Varney characters with fantastic Halloween fun! Gailard Sartain is missed as Bobby's big-mouthed brother Chuck, but John Cadenhead does a fair job, and the cast is sufficient since Ernest is the real focus. Eartha Kitt adds some extra luster to the line-up as Old Lady Hackmore. Excellent, slightly scary entertainment for the whole family! The DVD is disappointingly bare bones, without so much as a trailer or bio, and it's not even widescreen, but at such an affordable price as this film can be found, one shouldn't hesitate to add "Ernest, Scared Stupid" to their DVD collection! It's too good to pass up!
