2 out of 5 stars Good flick - Horrible transfer.......2007-04-23

This is the first time I've run into a to-DVD transfer that is so horrible that I feel I need to add to the reviews. If it wasn't for the movie, it'd get 0 stars. Aspect ratio is off (thank you PowerDVD for allowing me to fix that), sound level is low (need to turn volume up to max) and sound quality not much better. Picture quality fairly fuzzy. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-02-16

The hit movie that also got a song name after it and it was called Convoy. Kris Kristofferson starred in this picture as Rubber Duck aka Martin Penwald. Also starring in this picture was Ali MacGraw playing the role of Melissa and Ernest Borgnine plays the role of sheriff Lyle Wallace aka Cottonmouth. Rubber Duck stops at restaurant along with two other truckers. When the drivers get into a ruckus with local law officials that puts the truckers on the run. Enters Sheriff Lyle Wallace, who now has a problem with the Rubber Ducks attitude, and sets out to bring him in for justice. Enter Ali MacGraw who's a hitch hiker that the duck gives a ride to. As the duck travels down the highway with sheriff Wallace chasing him he starts to notice that a line of trucks are following him. Things get out of hand when Sheriff Wallace takes a friend of the duck and throws him in jail. All in all, I give this movie an 8. The only thing I really didn't care for was the ******. Other then that the movie was a good one.

2 out of 5 stars Late Arival.......2007-01-19

Ordered two of them in plenty of time before Christmas to give as gifts to my Trucker sons. They arrived the day AFTER Christmas!!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible squashed transfer.......2005-11-16

Don't be fooled by the cover. This is NOT a collector's edition letterbox edition. The film's original 2.35:1 widescreen has been bizarrely changed to 1.85:1. The result is an unpleasant warped, squished image. It is such a staggeringly pointless and inept thing to do, I contacted Cheezy Flicks for an explananation. They blamed the "third party" who supplied them with the transfer. If so, shame on them for selling it anyway. A cynical piece of junk. Avoid.

Following the blockbuster success of The Exorcist, director William Friedkin had the clout to make any film he wanted, and he nearly ruined his career making Sorcerer, an ill-fated remake of the classic French thriller The Wages of Fear. Given the big-budget treatment that Friedkin could command, the original plot remains unchanged: In an unnamed Latin American country, Roy Scheider leads a group of four fugitives who will earn their freedom if they can successfully transport truckloads of volatile nitroglycerine over treacherous terrain to extinguish a raging oil fire. The unstable explosives could prove deadly at any point of the journey, and numerous obstacles threaten the completion of the mission. Produced under rugged conditions in the jungles of the Dominican Republic, the film is visually impressive and contains intense moments of astonishing suspense, but the specter of the superior French version hangs over every scene. This version remains a folly of directorial ambition run amuck, but for the very same reason Sorcerer is a film that's hauntingly unforgettable, fueled by an atmosphere of dread and the forceful powers of nature. Presented in full-screen format on DVD, the film is aided immeasurably by Tangerine Dream's eerie electronic score. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It's All About The Music.......2007-06-15

This is a dark, brooding film so typical of William Friedkin. Not his best work, but entertaining nonetheless. I mean, who else can generate white knuckle suspense at two miles per hour (see the film, and you'll know what I mean).

The best aspect of the film is the intense soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. Mr. Friedkin once stated if he had known of the existence of Tangerine Dream when he made The Exorcist, he would have selected them for that soundtrack instead of Mike Oldfield.

5 out of 5 stars a timeless masterpiece.......2007-06-02

after so many years, watching this movie again was still so thrill and so suspenseful. the only thing i failed to figure out is the weird movie title.
'the wages of fear' is in black and white, this 'sorcerer' is in colors. both are amazing timeless masterpieces that should be included in your ##BEST FILMS LIST. always recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Roy Scheider at his best!.......2007-05-19

If you love epic movies from the 1970s, 'Sorcerer' is your film. Roy Scheider is at the top of his game, and the cinematography is not only scary as all hell, but it's beautiful at the same time. A slow, concentrated film with a climax that will blow you away.

5 out of 5 stars Noir suspense film that is eery and cool.......2007-04-09

Never saw "Wages of Fear" but "Sorcerer" is definitely a weird creepy movie due to the score from Tangerine Dream. Notable credit must be given to Keith Barret who supplied some nice mood music during a great panaglide helicopter shot overlooking the oil fire in the movie. Great jungle locations...something about jungle movies creep me out
(Romancing the Stone comes to mind). Excellent scenes of suspense involving the trucks transporting nitroglycerine through the rugged jungle country. Steve McQueen was considered first for the role that Roy Scheider would eventually play. Mcqueen would have been fine for the role and it would have definitely been a different movie although maybe not for the better. Roy Scheider brings an element of believeability and succeeds on all levels...Im glad he was cast and not McQueen. Anyway, pure suspense, creepy music, weird locations and the great idea of putting 4 strangers in a dangerous situation make "Sorcerer" a winner in my book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Action & Super-Cool Soundtrack.......2007-03-30

Do you like Roy Scheider? Did you like Jaws? Blue Thunder? You will love Sorcerer. Scheider is great as the pseudo leader of four guys, each on the run from something, who undertake a dangerous mission to ship volatile dynamite through a jungle to put out an oil rig fire. It's a chance to earn some money and maybe some redemption for each.

2 out of 5 stars Great movie, poor quality dvd.......2007-04-16

I love a good '70s cb radio movie as much as the next person and I really love this movie. However, this dvd is of very poor quality-it looks like it was taped off an old tv set and the sound is not synched with the picture. I couldn't watch it. It was put out by a company called Cheezy Flicks. I won't be buying anything else they put out. Let's hope some other company does a professional job of transferring this fun movie onto a dvd...how hard could it really be???

5 out of 5 stars CONVOY.......2007-03-24

MY SON IS 4 YEARS OLD I BOUGHT HIM THIS DVD BECAUSE HE INTO SEMI AND HIS DAD HAD THIS MOVIE RECORED OFF THE T.V. SO I HAD TO BY HIM THE DVD SO HE COULD HAVE IS OWN COPY AND EVERY NIGHT HE WATCHES IT THERE FOR A WHILE THE MOVIE HAD TO BE PLAYING ALL THE TIME... THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY AS FAR AS PICKING OUT A MOVIE IS TO MAKE SURE YOU OR THAT PERSON IS GOING TO LIKE IT.... I TRYED TO FIND THIS MOVIE ELS WHERE BUT NO ONE ELS CARRIED IT BUT THATS TO AMAZON I FOUND IT CAUSE THEY CARRIED IT THNAKS SO MUCH....

2 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED AGAIN,.......2007-01-01

The movie was the one I wanted, however, It was supposed to be "new" I guess "new" means different things to different people. I didnt order from "cheesey Flicks because of the reviews, I ordered from Amazon (I wont ever again, though) and it still came from "Cheesey Flicks". The picture was not "clear like it should be, it was a very poor "digital remaster" the sound track was off, it was like watching the old jaspanese monster movies, where the lips were moving, but not in sync with the soundtrack, You had to keep your finger on the volume button on the remote cause the sound went up and down...I was really disappointed, I have learned my lesson, "again" hope against hope, that I would get a fair deal when buying off the internet,.... what you see, isn't always what you get....

5 out of 5 stars Not as bad as it was made out to be.......2006-08-01

I recently purchased this DVD to replace a worn out VHS tape. After reading the other reviews about this DVD, I wondered if I should actually spend money on it. I decided to go for it and I was glad I did. I thought the sound and picture quality was excellent! I would not hesitate to buy this DVD again.

3 out of 5 stars Convoy.......2005-10-27

Movie is ok, but not like the movie on T.V. This one is cut and the one that I seen on T.V. was not cut. One scene that was cut from the dvd is where the man is talking to the truckers all down the line as to why they are in the convoy and it shows a trucker mooning the camera.

Other then that the movie was a good one.

Avoid.

        Description

"When he gets mad, Olmi really lets go!"

Busted down from homicide for arresting a diamond smuggler with friends in high places, hardboiled cop Olmi (the late great Maurizio Merli, star of VIOLENT NAPLES and THE CYNIC, THE RAT, AND THE FIST) joins Rome's emergency squad, where his extreme tactics make him a target of both the mob and the press. After killing an innocent man he mistakes for an assassin, Olmi has himself transferred to a quiet beat on the Adriatic coast. Finding love in the arms of a beautiful schoolteacher, Olmi's carefree existence is shot to Hell after he crosses paths with a gang of vicious gun runners operating out of the local port. When Olmi takes his .45 snub-nose out of storage, all hell breaks loose under the Tuscan sun.

Known in Italy as Un Poliziotto Scomodo ("The Inconvenient Cop"), CONVOY BUSTERS features Maurizio Merli in one of his last poliziotteschi assignments. Gorgeous Olga Karlatos and the ever-evil Massimo Serrato (THE 10TH VICTIM, AUTOPSY) costar in a fast-paced action vehicle fueled by slashed throats, charred corpses and 100% Italian machismo, directed by Stelvio Massi (EMERGENCY SQUAD, THE LAST ROUND) and with a cool Euro-Cult score by Stelvio Cipriani (38 COLT SPECIAL SQUAD).

NoShame is proud to present this rare latter day poliziotteschi in an eye-popping transfer, in its original aspect ratio with exclusive interviews with actors and filmmakers.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The wrong side of average.......2007-06-19

Stelvio Massi's Convoy Busters aka An Inconvenient Cop is a meandering affair that ticks boxes without much enthusiasm without ever really holding together and often feeling like three different rough treatments for a cop at odds with the system movie that got awkwardly combined in the hope that something would stick. It's watchable enough if you've nothing better to do, but apart from an amusing early warning signal for arms smugglers (a local TV channel pulling its striptease show for technical reasons and replacing it with an old movie!) there's not much in the way of imagination on display. The wrong side of average.

As if to compensate for the film, NoShame have gone all out on the extras with several inhterview featurettes, stills and poster gallery, trailer and even a comic book!

3 out of 5 stars There are better Italian cop thrillers.......2006-11-21

In his movies, the late Maurizio MERLI was Italy's version of Clint EASTWOOD's DIRTY HARRY character. Refered to as "commissario di ferro" (the iron detective)MERLI is fondly remembered among Italian genre film afficionados for his many tough-as-nails, more often than not vigilante cop roles. Being a fan of the "polizioteschi" genre (violent Italian cop movies of the 1970ies), this DVD was a mandatory purchase for me.
        Alas, I was mildly disappointed.
Not that CONVOY BUSTERS isn't worth your while, but I found it much weaker than other MERLI efforts like SPECIAL COP IN ACTION or ROME ARMED TO THE TEETH.
One of the flaws of CONVOY BUSTERS is the story (two completely unrelated plot threads). Commissario OLMI (MERLI with his trademark moustache) investigates the death of a teenage girl and a young man and is able to link these murders to a "honorable citizen" (the head of the customs office) with mob affiliations. Several action sequences later, the baddie manages to escape to Switzerland and is never heard of again. The remainder of the movie concerns OLMI's efforts to rid a small coastal city (to which he had been transfered) of a gang of arms smugglers. There is a gapping plot hole: OLMI erronously shoots an innocent bystander confusing him with an attacker; oddly this incident does not have any consequences at all for our hero (his transfer was unrelated and agreed upon earlier)!
There is plenty of action, but sadly it is rather unremarkable. A standout scene has MERLI's character chasing some baddies with a helicopter, while the villains try to get away with a van. The iron detective has ample opportunity to show off his marksmanship, as he shoots the driver and then picks off the running baddies one by one! Otherwise, CONVOY BUSTERS isn't that exciting actionwise!
There are however many good extra features: There is the film's trailer and a picture gallery (with images from the film under review as well as other MERLI movies) and lots of interviews with MERLI's son, his former agent, an actor friend and two directors, all of whom fondly remember MERLI. It is actually quite moving, as you get to know MERLI on a personal level through these interviews (MERLI is sadly no longer with us, he suffered a heart attack in 1989 while playing tennis.) There is also a trailer for a police movie COP ON FIRE starring MERLI's son.
A real great addition is a small colour comic book MILANO CRIMINALE: THE DE FALCO SOLUTION (admittedly thin pagewise), which was a fun read! I wish more DVDs had such comic book extras!

3 out of 5 stars Maurizio Merli keeps this one afloat.......2006-11-07

Fans of Italian cinema know that any film with Maurizio Merli can't be all that bad. This man has a carisma and screen presence to him that can't be riviled. You can't help but go along with anything this man does on screen.

Still even with Maurizio Merli as the main star doesn't make Convoy Busters a great Euro Crime film. Compared to his other Euro Crime gems like Violent Naples, Rome Armed to the Teech and The Cynic the Rat and teh Fist, Convoy Busters come sout being one of his weakest (and last) outings in the genre.

Merili plays his typical Dirty Harry type come who has extreme methods when it comes to upholding the law. When he connects a high political figure's son to a killing he then gets reassinged to a different precinct. While being head hancho at the new station he stumbles upon illegal smuggling of weapons. He also finds time for love with the beautiful actress Olga Karlatos (best known for the eye-ball scene in Zombie).

Director Stelvio Massi keeps the film moving at a brisk pace with some great action and a few b****-slapping scenes (for which Merli is famous for) but the film is oddly structured. There's a lot of twists and turns that don't finish the plot of the previous section. The film is like two different movies with Merli not tying up events from the first half. This is a shame as most viewers will feel somewhat cheated by the end.

Overall Merli still makes this movie extremely watchable. Merli oozes machoism and toughness from start to finish making thsi film a must for fans of Euro Crime films as well as american fodder like Dirty Harry.

Monsarrat's brilliant best seller comes surging to life. The World War II adventures of a British convoy escort ship and its officers. At the start of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is assigned to convoy escort HMS Compass Rose with inexperienced officers and men just out of training. The winter seas make life miserable enough, but the men must also harden themselves to rescuing survivors of U-Boat attacks, while seldom able to strike back. Traumatic events afloat and ashore create a warm bond between the skipper and his first officer. Atmospheric sea footage. "A well deserved salute to the Royal Navy's little ships."

        5 out of 5 stars The Hero's,The Heroines, & The Cruel Sea........2006-12-05

I first read the expurgated version of this book when I was at Senior school in 1952. I always thought that it was because of the language, not so.
I have seen the Movie many times and I always come away from the viewing with an overwhelming sense of meloncholly. Would I as a young man have had the courage of these brave sailers who fought a brutal, murderous enemy that was matched only by the equally and souless brutality of their secondry adversary, the cruel sea that the Germans, if possible, had made more cruel . Monsarrats insight into the life on board ship in the North Atlantic in a storm are as graphic as they are real. The pounding sea, the noise, the cold, the seasickness that Sub Lt Ferrabby experiences for days on end. His description of the sinking of the Compass Rose, the dying thoughts of the brave crew. As the author puts it " they new how to die, how to bury the dead," to help heal the terrible debris of the ghastly war that they were in till the bitter end. As Captain Ericson puts it at the end of the Movies, "for all the the good they did, (the Germans) they shoud'nt have bothered" I recently inherited a 1953 printing of "The Cruel Sea" I have read it three times in the last year. I now know why it was expurgated in 1952, it's the brothel description of Lt Bennett in Liverpool, their home port, happily the book was written in an age where profanity was not de riguer. The essense of this great movie and an even greater Book is that this is a love story,,, the love of comrades at war and how they share the suffering. The love of Lockhart and Ferrabee for this Collossus who is Ericson, the Captain, and he for them, as they struggle to defeat the evil menace of the "U" Boat. Countered somewhat by probably the most tender loves scenes ever in a war movie as he desribes a wartime love affair between Ft Lt Lockhart and "glamour pants" Officer Hallam in OPS. An historic Movie that all should see at least once. As Ericson puts it " The men are the Hero's, the ships are the Heroines, and the Villain is the "Cruel Sea"

5 out of 5 stars Terrific British war drama.......2005-12-14

This is a very realistic, semi-documentary account of British convoys in the Atlantic during WW II. We see the men as frightened, lonely, and, above all, dedicated. Jack Hawkins is the captain of the Compass Rose, a ship that gets blown up by a German sub, and from which he and some of his men just barely survive on a raft. He is given another command and we feel most acutely his torment over risking the lives of his men while getting revenge on another German sub. The movie is intelligent and honest, thanks mainly to Eric Ambler's script and top-notch dialogue. Produced in the Ealing Studios and a gem of a movie. Definitely worth a watch.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING WAR AT SEA STORY.......2005-07-06

This movie is quite faithful to the novel, which was also spectacular. A good example of the interaction of men thrown together on a ship, at war, in difficult conditions, fighting a cruel sea in an even crueler war.
This should be considered one bookend of the many movies covering the Second World War at sea, in the Atlantic, with the other being "Das Boot", covering the same war scenario, from opposite sides of the conflict.
A must see for an understanding and appreciation of the war at sea in WWII.
