A recut version of the four-part OAV (1994), the Macross Plus movie plays like a mixture of Top Gun, Gundam Wing, and Key the Metal Idol. It's 2040 on the planet Eden: former high school rivals Isamu Dyson and half-human/half-Zentraedi Guld Goa Bowman have become rival mecha test pilots. They're also still competing for the affection of Myung Lone, the producer for cybernetic singing sensation Sharon Apple. When an illegal "bio-neural" chip is implanted into the computer that generates Sharon, she becomes sentient, attacking Myung and attempting to lure Isamu to his death. Wild and crazy Isamu and serious Guld defeat the plot with their hotshot piloting. The film boasts elaborate computer-animated special effects and exceptionally well choreographed aerial battles, but director Shoji Kawamori correctly summed up Macross Plus as "a serious story with a silly plot." Unrated; suitable for ages 16 and up: Nudity, violence, sexual situations. --Charles Solomon

a very good film, whether you're a Macross fan or not.......2005-08-15
... and I've never seen a second of any other thing from the series, though from my understanding this one's a bit of a side story that takes place in the same universe, rather than a sequel. Because of this, you can enter it blind like I did and not feel left out.
Many have called this the anime Top Gun, and I guess it sort of is, except for the whole part about the cybernetic pop star who becomes sentient and tries to slay our two male protagonists out of burning desire. It was codirected by the Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe and it has some of the same themes. Much of the plot hinges on characters confronting their pasts, which are unveiled bit by bit, like the layers of an onion. While this is done with less subtlety than in Watanabe's later work, this very intimate and personal style of character development still works amidst the futuristic landscape of transformer fighter jets, giant dino birds and digital pop. Speaking of which, it is also brilliantly scored by Yoko Kanno the anime soundtrack maestro. The plot is admittedly somewhat silly but then, so was the plot to Top Gun, and the execution here is more than good enough to compensate.
P.S. I personally did not mind any of these things, but be forewarned:
1. There's no dubbing, subtitles only.
2. Video quality is not very good for DVD, though still quite acceptable.
3. A dearth of special features.
Don't do it in the name of Macross!.......2005-06-28
I was disappointed with this movie. I didn't really find a connection, at least a real connection, with the original story. Just a 'forced relation' so as you can use the Macross (so as to sell more?) name.
The movie is not bad (not good either) but they shouldn't use the Macross name.
It hasn't also, have the 'soul' of the original story.
huge macross plus fan..........2005-05-07
I have been a Macross fan since Robotech hit U.S. television. It was only a matter of time before I explored the world of Japanese Anime after seeing Robotech.
When Macross Plus arrived I was an adult and I was so impressed by the animation and the sound track is awsome still!! Most of all, the plot was finally a mature one!
I have both the OVA series and the Movie Version. I felt to get all aspects of the story line I had to watch both versions. Both are great as stand alone howerver. I appriciated the Movie version since there was some nudity and the death of Gould was more intense. I didn't like that the Movie left out some plot development though. I truely felt,at the time of release, this movie was the most superior film out there. (In my opinion.)
Now, I must tell you that I have not viewed the DVD version of this release. So I appriciate reading the reviews here. I just rewatched the VHS version a couple of nights ago. And the story still grabs my heart. But the quality of tape compared to watching DVD's is so grainy. I am shocked and dissappointed to hear that the DVD release is a copy of the VHS! I have been considering buying the DVD of Macross Plus, but I'm glad to know ahead of time it isn't worth it. I thought there was an English dubbed version of the Movie version. I ordered, prefered, the subtitled version VHS.
Perhapse I will still order the OVA series version on DVD, since people said it was good quality.
4 stars because of the end.......2005-01-04
The major differences between the movie and the series is that the movie has some old scenes deleted and new scenes added. Certain sequences of events have been altered in the movie too.
I was disappointed how they deleted the fight scene at the beginning. That truly sucked. However, they made Gauld's dogfight with the ghost more spectacular and his death more heroic, and more scenes were added to give Sharon more depth which gave you more of an understanding about her.
If you own the series, i wouldnt bother with the movie edition. However, the movie is good in its own right, especially with the added scenes.
The biggest disappointment in my life.......2004-05-05
I was a really big fan of Macross Plus The Movie. It was the one of my favourite anime ever. I was waiting many years for this title to be released on DVD. They were saying that on DVD this film will be remastered etc. So I've preordered it from Amazon as soon as it was possible. It was the biggest disappointment in my life, when I watched the movie. It was looking exactly the same as on VHS! Even subtitles were encoded on the screen. The chinese bootleg was a lot better than this original release!
