Another John Grisham legal thriller comes to the screen, pairing Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts in a film directed by Alan J. Pakula, who is known for dark-hued suspense pictures such as Klute, The Parallax View,All the President's Men, and Presumed Innocent. The Pelican Brief isn't up to the level of those films, but it is a perfectly entertaining movie about a law student (Roberts) whose life is endangered when she discovers evidence of a conspiracy behind the killings of two Supreme Court justices. She enlists the help of an investigative reporter (Washington) and the two become fugitives. The charisma and chemistry of the leads goes a long way toward compensating for the story's shortcomings, as does a truly impressive supporting cast that includes Sam Shepard, John Heard, James B. Sikking, Tony Goldwyn, Stanley Tucci, Hume Cronyn, John Lithgow, William Atherton, and Robert Culp. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars John Grisham wrote it. Enough said........2007-03-28

As an owner of and multiple time reader and watcher of every Grisham book and movie made from those books, this one may be at the top of my list. Note that I said May Be, because they are all unique and first rate. A lawyer myself, I have always been struck by the authenticity of his treatment of the subject matter in his books and by the way he takes a hands off attitude with the making of them into movies, which have all turned out well in my opinion. This one is no exception. It is intriguing, hair raising, clever, full of great acting and dialogue which Grisham is so adept at using to weave his stories. You won't be sorry you bought it. It is a top notch movie you will want to see multiple times.

The movie does justice to Grisham's novel. Plausible plot; a genuine thriller. I like it.

2 out of 5 stars The Pelican Brief.......2007-01-12

Living in the area, I love to view the scenery and enjoy the atmosphere of New Orleans so I never get tired of looking at The Pelican Brief. I even have friends that appear as "extras" in this movie. I am extremely disappointed in the DVD. It has to be truned over to view the second half of the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Pelican Brief.......2007-01-10

The movie is good, but the setup for DVD is ridiculous. It's two sided and you have to flip over everytime. It's not in the 21st Century.

The Art of War is the first action movie with a hero who works for the United Nations--the U.N. Covert Operations Unit, to be specific. Who knew there was such a thing? Wesley Snipes plays Shaw, their top operative, who's unafraid of dropping several stories from one ledge of a skyscraper to another. When the Chinese ambassador is assassinated, it threatens the stability of an impending trade agreement that the secretary-general (played by Donald Sutherland) has worked so hard to achieve. Shaw gets arrested for the assassination, but who's really responsible? Is it the wily Chinese capitalist? A seemingly affable FBI agent? Only a lovely U.N. interpreter (Marie Matiko) believes he's innocent, especially when someone tries to knock her off and Shaw is the only person she can turn to... well, you get the idea. The script is neither original nor comprehensible, but that's not why you'd want to watch a movie like The Art of War--it's the action. And the action is pretty good, particularly earlier on when the confusions of the plot don't matter as much. Michael Biehn (The Terminator, The Rock) does a serviceable job as one of Shaw's associates, Anne Archer (Fatal Attraction, Clear and Present Danger) tries to seem complicated as the head of the Covert Operations Unit, and Maury Chaykin (The Mask of Zorro, Devil in a Blue Dress) is dependable as ever as the FBI guy. --Bret Fetzer

Description

While on assignment during a UN trade meeting, the Ambassador to China is suddenly killed by an assassin's bullet. Unable to speak of his true identity, top agent Neil Shaw has been set-up for the murder and on the run to prove his innocence.

1 out of 5 stars Poor, poor Wesley.......2007-06-09

The best thing about this movie is the poster, which recalls the posters of the thrillers of the '70s.

The second best thing is the trailer, which makes it seem silly, but a little fun, like a cheap thrill.

You'll observe that neither the poster nor the trailer are actually IN the movie.

This movie is worse than just bad, but not bad in an even somewhat amusing way. This is the most poorly directed movie I have ever seen. There is no point of view, there is no logic, there is no rhythm or momentum. Every cut is jarring, every angle thoughtless.

I respect Wesley for taking control and producing his own films, but he's gotta do better than this. If he just had a better director (and a script wouldn't hurt) a lot of the glaring problems of this movie would be less visible. Actors who are not so clearly bottom of the bargain barrel would help, too.

But special mention has to go to Anne Archer. She's always been awful, but she reaches new lows here. The most ridiculous thing is that she's supposed to be in charge of this super high-level espionage unit, and she's about as savvy and sophisticated as an Iowa housewife who's watched one episode of Martha Stewart. And the worst part is: she tends to sound a little drunk when she's just trying to speak normally. Talk about a weak link.

Wesley, how bout producing a nice romantic comedy with yourself? Or take your time and seek out a really decent script. Or just take time to... find yourself.

And as for you, dear reader, you do not want to see this movie. You really, really don't. Just look at the cool poster.

And keep hoping the Blade series gets back on track.

4 out of 5 stars Oh Snipes! .......2007-06-06

I enjoyed this movie. It is a shame that his persona gives a bad impression. This was a pretty good dvd for under $10. Decent story just enough violence that you and your girlfriend/wife can watch without flinching.

4 out of 5 stars International Diplomacy Gone Array.......2006-06-13

'The Art of War' starring Wesley Snipes is a superior action/adventure tale about an international conspiracy involving United Nations "One World Insiders", the FBI, high level Chinese politicians and Asian Triad gangs. Neil Shaw (Wesley Snipes) is a U.N. secret agent caught in the middle of a growing mystery which seems centered around the arrival of an important Chinese Ambassador and his entourage in New York.

Also involved is a lovely Chinese national named Julia Fang (Marie Matiko) who appears marked for death by both Triad and U.N. factions. Agent Neil becomes Julia's only means of survival as the two work together to stay alive and reveal the conspirators. As the action builds towards a climax and the dead bodies pile up they both become increasingly aware that the conspiracy rises to the highest eschalons of international politics.

A highly entertaining film with lots of suspense and a great cast; Wesley Snipes, Marie Matiko, James Hong, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Donald Sutherland, Anne Archer and Michael Biehn.

3 out of 5 stars Hollywood.......2006-01-03

This is a typical hollywood movie, in both good and bad way. First, the budget is big, the premise thought provoking, and the actions scenes well directed. Those are the good parts.

The bad includes the casting: wesley snipes is black, his boss is female, his love interest is an asian diplomat w a nose ring, and his sidekick a cop who while theoretically italian is obviously jewish and speaks in yinglish. More hollywood postive discrimination than you can shake a stick at. Also the plot totally sucks, and is best disregarded (altho the concerns about china and so forth are interesting, the way things play out is completely hokey). All in all worth seeing, but not a must see by any means. I wouldn't pay full price, if I were you... (I bought it used).

5 out of 5 stars The Art od War.......2005-06-17

Wesley Snipes plays (Shaw) who workd for the U.N. (United Nations) he is like the black James Bond in this movie. When the chinese ambassader gets murder Shaw gets blame for it and put in jail Marie Matiko character believes he is innocent. Donald Sutherland character wants to keep china all to himself.

5 out of 5 stars intelligent links.......2007-04-25

This high quality-movie provides a few intelligent links. Such as setting a somewhat dark plot against the eve of world war 1, an equally dark era when Europe saw its old order of Kings, Czars and Kaisers collapse by its own incompetence. Never to rise again in its ancient splendor, glitter & shine.

Another link with history is made by Diana Rigg, acting out a very independent journalist. In those days women's lib just came off, and got strongly promoted by the need to employ women in Europe's extensive war industries - as the men were taken in by the armed forces.

Of course Rigg's independence also refers to her famous role of Emma Peel in 'the Avengers' - the extremely succesfull tv-series she did a few years earlier. In this movie Rigg acts at least as well, showing her great versatility.

Apart from her individual play, Diana Rigg also convincingly teams up with male lead Oliver Reed. Strong supporting roles are provided by Telly Savalas as the society-criminal, and by German Curd Jurgens as his corrupt general in the Kaiser's army.

Tongue-in-cheek humor against a setting of impending doom, combined with good acting, makes 'The Assassination Bureau' a memorable movie. Shot & styled in 1969, another era with a ruthless change of morals & behavior.

5 out of 5 stars "Virtue, it seems, has been rewarded." "Well, really!".......2006-04-21

This is one of my four favorite late 60's comedies that I used to make a point of watching for and watching again and again every time they were shown on TV. "The Assassination Bureau" is based on the unfinished Jack London novel, The Assassination Bureau, Ltd. (Twentieth-Century Classics), posthumously completed by Robert L. Fish with the assistance of London's and his wife's notes. London had basically written himself into a corner, which Fish only did a marginal job of extricating the novel from. The movie is MUCH better.

In a subtly altered pre-WWI Europe, would-be journalist Miss Sonya Winter (a cool as a cucumber Diana Rigg) has a plan for how to get a job in her male-dominated chosen field: do a story exposing a secret organization of assassins for hire AND destroy said organization by taking advantage of its policy of guaranteeing that the target will be killed upon presentation of sufficient justification and prepayment of the fee. Newspaper publisher Lord Bostwick (Telly Savalas) agrees to back her plan which is to put out a contract on the chairman of the organization, Ivan Dragomiloff (Oliver Reed at his oiliest). Dragomiloff himself accepts the commission in part because he believes his aging colleagues and friends of his late father the founder have degenerated into amoral killers for the sake of money, effectively challenging them all to a duel.

Doesn't sound like much of a comedy, does it? Yet it is relentlessly, hysterically funny! Diana Rigg's icy coolness is the perfect counterpoint to Oliver Reed's smoldering unctuousness, and Telly Savalas is dead solid perfect. Some of film's finest character actors round out the cast of assassins, including Curd Jurgens as the manic General von Pinck. The dialog is witty and full of understated hilarity, and the verbal sparring between Miss Winter and Dragomiloff is particularly choice as she follows him across Europe to "report on his... whatever happens to him." A frenetic score, gorgeous sets and costumes, unexpected twists and turns during the dash across Europe, and somewhat dated special effects round out the effort. If you've never seen it, you owe yourself at least a rental of this all but forgotten gem.

Note: Though produced from a clear, crisp print, this widescreen DVD is about as bare bones as you can get. No extras of any kind -- just scene selection and English subtitles, which helped me pick up a few things I'd missed due to thick accents despite my multitudinous TV viewings over the years. At this price though, it is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Amusing Caper.......2005-01-23

"The Assassination Bureau" has an amusing premise and for the most part executes it ably enough. Oliver Reed stars as the head of a consortium of international assassins who takes on an interesting assignment. Crusading reporter Diana Rigg contracts his organization to kill him. Reed takes up this proposal because he feels that it will enable him to weed out the weaknesses in the organization. Assistant Chairman Telly Savalas has other ideas, however. The film starts off well enough, has kind of a clunky midsection. This portion of the film feels more slapsticky than darkly comic. The film recovers and delivers a slam-bang ending. Oliver Reed is charismatically suave as Ivan, the head of the Bureau. Savalas and Curt Jurgens as a German associate are sublimely villainous. Diana Rigg, however, isn't given much to do as Miss Winters. The high point for her in this film is a scene where she is required to walk around in a bath towel. Not classic comedy but not a bad way to wile away a few hours.

5 out of 5 stars DIANA AND TELLY - TOGETHER AGAIN.......2004-09-19

1969 was a good year for the inimitable Diana Rigg and the ubiquitous at that time Telly Savalas. They appeared together in the essential James Bond "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and in this little-seen but wonderfully done "Assassination Bureau."
Dame Diana was an icon of the late sixties, having charmed us for three years as Emma Peel in the exquisite AVENGERS TV series. After leaving the series, Rigg appeared in these two movies and also in George C. Scott's "The Hospital" and Vincent Price's "Theater of Blood." Cooly beautiful, unassumedly British and elegant, Diana Rigg became one of our most underappreciated screen presences.
Her buoyant performance as the feminist Sarah Winters in this film is delightful; never has she appeared so coy and kittenish as in this role. The also underappreciated Oliver Reed is dashing as the hero/villain, and of course, Savalas is triumphant as the quinessential villain. Add Curt Jurgens in a delightfully daffy role as a crazy German and you have a delightful drawing room black comedy. The special effects for a late sixties movie are predictably shoddy, but this is like watching one of those delightful Jules Verne movies---it doesn't matter, the cast is so good. Definitely a minor classic.

4 out of 5 stars Zeppelins, bombs, and bordellos, oh my..........2004-08-29

The Assassination Bureau (1969), directed by Basil Deardon, is a wonderfully funny dark comedy, full of suave, sophisticated characters, lush settings, and wry humor, the kind we just don't see made anymore as it treats its' audience with intelligence and respect while not being too smart for its' own good, as opposed to many comedies of the present that focus on toilet humor, foul language, and just the general need to try and be a gross as possible, dumbing things down as much as possible for the broadest audience. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to be a film snob as I like most all kinds of movies, but I just wish along with what we have, we could also have more films along the lines of this one.

The film stars a very handsome Oliver Reed and the exceptionally beautiful Diana Rigg as Ivan Dragomiloff and Miss Winter, respectively. The story, set in what seems to be early 20th century, begins with Miss Winter desires to gain employment within a newspaper, one own by Lord Bostwick, played by Telly Savalas (Who loves ya, baby?). Her method for getting her foot in the door comes in the form of information she's uncovered about a mysterious international organization of hitmen, secretly called The Assassination Bureau, Limited, that takes commissions to execute people for money. Bostwick agrees to hire her, and in order to get a better handle on the story, she makes contact with the group, with the purpose to commission them to do a killing for her. She meets Ivan, and requests that he be the target. Ivan, who inherited his position and the company from his father, is of the idealistic sort, and sees this as a real opportunity to not only test his organization, but to strengthen the idealistic principles which his father brought forth when he started the bureau, as Ivan feels the current bureau has become to focused on the monetary gains from their lucrative business. He accepts Miss Winter's commission, and presents it to the board, and soon the challenge begins. Ivan must survive against some of the world's most deadly killers, taking them out before they do him in...with Miss Winters in tow, as she follows the story for her newspaper. Will the bureau be successful? Or will Ivan manage to elude his own murder, one which he accepted a commission for himself? I'm not going to tell, but I will say it's worth watching to find out. There's actually a lot more within the plot that I didn't detail, as I didn't want to give too much away for those who haven't seen the film.

As I said, the movie is a lot of fun and very enjoyable. Reed is especially charming and witty, and the chemistry between him and Diana Rigg's character comes through in nearly every scene they appear. Both actors bring a natural sophistication to their characters that just a real treat to watch. The film has the overall feel of a really well done comedy thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep the viewer on his/her feet. The supporting cast did an excellent job, and there seemed to be a strong effort to choose suitable actors to fill out the international cast of characters. While the story was complex, yet easy to follow, some of the relationships between the characters seemed a little light, but this was such a minor nitpick to me, given the films strengths. Also, great attention was given to the look and feel of the scenes and the wardrobe, and also the scenes shot on location, as to convey a sense of the time period during which the film takes place. Speaking of place, the film travels from England throughout Europe, visiting countries like Switzerland, Germany, Italy, to name a few, providing a wonderful, lush, adventurous backdrop to an interesting story. One of the things I really liked about the movie that the story sticks to its' plot, offering little in the way of diversions that only cause the viewer to be removed from the film. The pacing may slow a bit at some points, but it does move along at a comfortable, even pace. While some elements may be predictable, I found overall that the story appeared to original and engaging. The special effects in the film will appear extremely obvious, but given when the film was made, this was about the level one could expect. I would say just go along with it, and appreciate the movie as a whole, and forgo focusing too much on these elements. Also, when is the last time you saw a zeppelin in a movie? Okay, maybe that not so entertaining James Bond flick A View to a Kill (1985), but this film is much better.

The wide screen print provided on this DVD looks exceptional, providing a clear and crisp image that really shows of the vibrant and beautiful colors throughout the film, especially highlighting the finer details of the costuming (I don't usually notice the costuming within a film, unless it's really off base or the film is a presenting a certain period in time. This particular period just happened to include colorful, elaborate, and intricate costumes, which were, at least in my opinion, really well done). There is a noticeable absence of special features, even lacking the customary theatrical trailer, but there are English subtitles available, which I found handy at times as the accents within the film sometimes were a bit thick and not easily understood. I would have enjoyed a little more in the way of special features, but I really can't complain, as the film looks excellent.

1 out of 5 stars Is there a lower rating than 1 star?.......2007-04-07

The movie is absolute garbage. Everyone's a badguy(almost all the characters but Pierce are involved in some crazy plot to blow everyone else up), the acting by almost all involved is horrendous, and the editing blows! The silly love scene in the bathtub actually has 3 hair style changes where the woman's bangs disappear and reappear and disappear again, then reappear again in bed. You can see the people running from the bomb threats just falling over in panic, the "bad guys" completely overact and many don't seam to have any reason to even be involved. Hah, Pierce got shot point blank by two guys with uzi's and still not only gets away, but blows them up and goes on to finish the mastermind off and rescue the girl. It kind of reminded of a Beverly Hill's Cop(even has the same love interest) without any comedic value and an all B-list acting crew. I would say don't waste your time... but it does have a certain "so bad it's good" quality. Just know what your walking into :) (Btw I can't understand how this possibly has a 3 1/2 star rating... it really is bad).

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-03-11

The movie is great, unfortunately only the R-rated DVD was available. I originally saw the uncut version which is better. All in all, a good movie for Pierce Brosnan fans.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than His Bond Flicks.......2006-03-05

OK I know thats a bold statement that this is better than Pierce's Bond flicks. It's probably less than 10% of any of their budgets but it is at least as good as The World Is Not Enough and better than his other Bond films, at least I enjoyed it more and thats why we watch movies right? Maybe I'm tired of Bond (God forgive me but it is getting old, and without the big bad Soviets the world just seems different, I guess Bond needs to take on Al Qieda soon to make it more relevant), but I enjoyed watching this film when it first came out (I think it's an HBO flick). I have not seen it since 10 years ago so not sure if I'd still like it but I probably would cause Pierce in his non Bond roles has consistently been entertaining for me. I liked the part with the bomb under the blond with no panties car seat that is activated to blow up if she gets up (I think thats the way it went), that was a funny scene. The secret bomb was cool too and had me going hook, line, and sinker. Recommended!

3 out of 5 stars he's an urban guerilla..........2005-11-30

My wife suggested this movie while browsing in the local video store mainly because of her fascination for all things Brosnan whom she has liked since she first saw Remington Steele.

Very reminiscent at the outset of Blown Away, the premise suggests that the US, so long immune from terrorist threat, may be subject to internal terroism. As the plot proceeds, one is reminded of the storyline of Die Hard where a supposed terrorist is nothing but a robber.

Themeans by which the terror is spread is an explosive which is detonated by the human body itself and thus leaves no trace. Brosnan appears as an explosives expertwith a personal life in turmoil instigated in the first instance by the accidental drowning of his young daughter in the family swimming pool and an estranged wife allegedly in the midst of a relationship with a senator.

It is clear from the start that there is no terorist in the sense of a freedom fighter but there is a ruthless murderer who uses a terrorist approach to secure a ten million dollar payoff which he has been swindled out of.

The story proceeds at a good pace with hardly any time to draw breath but really does not carry the viewer with it. The scenes are all shot in glorious sunshine which shows off the Washington tourist attractions to good effect but which also serves to reduce the impact of the story. Similarly the extensive inclusion of insiders in the senate reduces the plausibilty of the plot. I was disturbed too by the focus on the ease by which Brosnan's character concocts explosives using highly visible ingredients in order to defeat the baddies. Although I do not like the idea of censorship I do question the judgement of film producers to educate the weak minded in this way.

In the end the bad guys get their comeuppance, the good guy gets thegirl and we all live happily everafter.

Brosnan had not yet aquired the gravitas that he would eventually bring to Bond and in many ways his character is an extension of the Remington Steels one where he is basically a good looking model. At times the character resembles that of an earlier movie, Taffin, where he falls into a depressive state but pulls himself out although the character there is much more interesting and dark.

This is not a bad movie but an OK movie. I would not put it into the same class as Blown Away or the Devil's Own or In the Name of the Father but nevertheless it is a slient reminder of the dangers we face from within. It does not take much for one person to terrorise anyone and we should always be on our guard for that eventuality.

On a final note. As I drew this review to a close I realised why the third senator in the story is so recognisable. It is because it is essentially the same part that the same actor plays in Timecop.
Ha.

2 out of 5 stars Deeply creepy, but ends up a dud.......2005-08-29

The film starts out with a brilliant, and creepy premise -- what if there was a chemical that could be added to ordinary water, colorless, tasteless and odorless, that, when drunk, didn't just kill its drinker but turned that person's body into a deadly explosive? As the movie initially unfolds, this premise is handled well and is remarkably chilling.

Pierce Brosnan plays the munitions expert who is in charge of determining the cause of several inexplicable explosions that have been taking out prominent senators. His investigations put him in uncomfortably close proximity with one of the senators who may be the next target -- the man his ex-wife left him for following the death of their daughter. As his investigation leads him to the bizarre method being used to kill off these lawmakers, he finds that his attempts to protect them are being misinterpreted and miscast, damaging his reputation... until he manages to prevent what would have been a deadly attack during a public rally.

Unfortunately, it's right after this attack that the film unravels into a mess. Up until this point it was a tight, chilling mystery; the attacks unfolded with spooky "it could happen anywhere" finesse, the chemistry used in the film to explain the explosive compound was handled remarkably well, and the haunted past driving the protagonist (his daughter's accidental drowning and the way his life and marriage fell apart in the aftermath) was a nice subplot that helped but wasn't overbearing.

But at this point the film abruptly changes course and becomes a cliche'd 80s actioner. His wife, witnessing his act of heroism, has the epiphany that she's with the wrong guy and comes back to him for a heapin' helping of "hot" 80s-style music-video simulated-sex. Now the senator is the one on the outs, and gee, turns out he's dirty and probably deserves to get blown up, but our hero is still sworn to protect him. The man out to get him, who up until now has been using remarkable finesse (and who wouldn't be creeped out by the concept that any glass of water could be their last?) suddenly switches over to much cruder tactics. You could swap in virtually any action movie with a rugged loner hero, unscrupulous ass who has to be protected, glowering villain, and useless woman screaming encouragement on the sidelines, at this point, to the same effect. Our hero, of course, saves the day, solves the crime, and wins the girl.

Live Wire had the potential to be brilliant, and would have been, but the final act ruins the entire puzzle-box effect of the film. It's a shame, because it could have been a great thriller. But it's not.

My recommendation: rent, don't buy. Watch up until the end of the rally sequence, when the ex-wife gets that speculative, "we're going to have SO much sex!" gleam in her eye, and then hit the stop button, and imagine the ending yourself. You'll get a much better film out of it that way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a government scandal.......2007-01-10

I was interested in this movie because i was in Puerto Rico in 1987 when this scandal came out. The movie is great and very interesting and now I have a clear picture as to what happen and the agencies involved.

4 out of 5 stars Good performances.......2007-01-03

This is the dramatization of a real event that took place in Puerto Rico. So this captured my interest as I do not no much about that island and the feelings of its inhabitants. It is quite an atmospheric movie with good acting performances. Kevin Spacey shines in a minor role as a kind of an "FBI-villain", Andy Garcia plays a prosecutor and sports a massive beard. Amy Irving is effective in the lead role. My favorite scene is her character's encounter with tha one Garcia plays, who apparently falls in love with her immediately, staggering dumbfounded through the tropical heat. It is an encounter without consequences, romancewise, maybe that's why it stuck to my mind.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Fact Based Thriller.......2000-09-18

Based on actual events, "A Show of Force" was based on the scandalous Cerro Maravilla incident that rocked Puerto Rican politics in 1978. On July 25, 1978, two young independence-seekers were ambushed by island police and murdered in cold blood near Cerro Maravilla. Police reports claim that the activists were trying to sabotage a radio transmitter to air pro-independence messages throughout the island, however after a serious investigation by the Puerto Rican government, it was discovered that this was a planned murder sponsored by the governor at the time, Carlos Romero Barcelo, and members in his pro-statehood administration.

The scandal which left a major mark on the dirtiness of Puerto Rican politics, helped paved the way to Barcelo's defeat by pro-Commonwealth governor, Rafael Hernandez Colon, and destroyed the statehood party's reputation forever.

This film, directed by Brazilian director, Bruno Bareto, stars Amy Irving, as Kate, an investigative reporter working for a local newspaper. After uncovering the truth behind the massive cover-up by the governor, Kate is determined to uncover the truth even more so than before. However, danger lurks around, as both FBI and the governor's allies monitor her moves.

Based on actual events, "A Show of Force" is partly-fictional, however it does open the viewer's eyes that injustice, oppression, and corruption can exist even in a democratic free country as the United States. Although some of the film seems to be outdated and/or inaccurate (clothes, economic development, etc..) other parts of the film remain interesting enough to retain the viewer in a suspenseful state.

Amy Irving, who later married Bareto (after her divorce from Stephen Spielberg, she began filming in Puerto Rico) is an excellent actress, and her role is believable. Lou Diamond Phillips is excellent as a villain you will love to hate, and Andy Garcia's role is indeed a "glorified cameo". While the film ends on a different note (the film has Kate capturing the police chief's confession on tape, when in fact it took more than 15 years of senate hearings and investigations by human rights groups to finally reveal the truth about the cover-up) the film will allow many who have little or no knowledge about Puerto Rico's complex colonial situation with the United States to gain a broader understanding.

Filmed in San Juan, Puerto Rico and neighboring suburbs, this film should be watched by all who support human rights throughout the world.

3 out of 5 stars Kinda corny..........2000-07-16

The only thing that actually made this movie watchable was that Kevin Spacey was in it. Any movie he's in is watchable. The plot is cheesy, and there are about 50 million other movies like it, but if you're a Spacey fan, go for it. Lou Diamond and Irving fans could probably watch this too.

4 out of 5 stars BASED ON A TRUE STORY.......1999-05-28

Shots shatter the silence a top a foggy mountain in the tropical island, as the two dead bodies fall to the ground...Government conspiracy, political cover up, spies and corruption are the ingredients of this film based on the true story of the events that happened back in the 70'S, about the murder of two puertorrican students that were in favor of Puerto Rico's independence, in a time where people who favored this political view were being black listed and harrassed, by the government. One of the students was the son of a well known writer. Having been in Puerto Rico when all of this took place, and when the movie was shown in theaters there, I have to say that this movie is only a brief portrayal of the much more complex true story. The film is based on the book Murder under two flags, by Anne Nelson. Interesting to watch , even with it's geographical and cultural inaccuracies. In one scene, we see the students taking a cab to the Cerro Maravilla which is deep in the country side, however the cab is going in the wrong direction towards Old San Juan( Old San juan sits in a peninsula/island conected to the larger island by one bridge, which they had left behind). Also, they show the locals wearing clothes from the 40's, and make the island look like a banana republic which I thought was ridiculous. They show old trucks hauling chickens, people wearing straw hats, and a third world kind of atmosphere that even for that time, is inaccurate. Andy Garcia wears a hat, and dresses like Orvil Reddenbucker, bow tie and all! Needless to say we all laughed outloud in the theater,it was insulting and funny at the same time. The real life Rivera Cruz-the prosecutor- actually wore designer suits, and no hat! I guess Hollywood will never let a latin american country be shown as a modern city with well dressed, clean cut, educated people. We need Latin directors and producers who know the culture, to start pointing out this things to the big studios, because the people who do the research on culture for set and fashion design are way off, believe me,I know, I'm puertorrican, born and raised. The director, Bruno Barreto, is brazilian, and probably meant well by trying to show us a 70's Puerto Rico.Next time they should first contact the Instituto de cultura de Puertorriqueño(Cultural institute of Puerto Rico)and they gladly will provide the historical and cultural background needed for this type of movie. The movie is good although I didn't like the ending, it was too cliché. The movie features great puertorrican actors like, Tony Chiroldes, Michelle Corbiere, and Claribel Medina to name a few. These three are fully bilingual and I wonder why they haven't appear in more films, because I know there is a shortage of well train bilingual spanish/english speaking actors in the industry. All in all is a movie that shouldn't be missed. I bought it.

Italian-American Danny Aiello gives
heartfelt performance, but those of
us who have done any research into
Jack Ruby, JFK, et, al know, he was
nowhere near like man portrayed in
here! And Aiello is about 6'2", 260
lbs., and the real Jakob Rubenstein
was about 5'8" and 185! Also, this
movie and publishers squib on back
cover make out like Oswald REALLY
DID kill JFK, which anybody knows
DIDN'T happen! Plus, there is no
such person as 'stripper' Candy
Kane! Movie made by Hollywood
Khazars to exonerate Zionist
and Masonic connection to JFK's
killing, with willing dupes play-
ing supporting roles. This Revis-
ionist Reviewer was not fooled!

3 out of 5 stars Maybe they should have called it "Sapphire".......2005-07-11

Jack Ruby was the owner of a nightclub in Dallas, Texas who gunned down Lee Harvey Oswald as the local police attempted to transfer Oswald to the County Jail.

This film has little to do with any of the facts of the situation, Danny Aiello plays Jack Ruby, or as the movie should have reported, "A Jack Ruby-like character." In the film Ruby encounters most all the characters that were even on the furthest fringes of most conspiracy theories that populate the landscape of the JFK assassination sub-culture. As if that wasn't enough the writers invent a few characters as well.

All that being said, if you are prepared to go into the viewing of this film by laying aside a historical perspective, you can have quite a bit of fun. Rather good performances, pretty solid production values and some smart writing make for good entertainment. The scenes that really shine take place between Ruby and a CIA agent named Maxwell played by Arliss Howard - the dailogue is marvelous.

If you are looking for a docudrama regarding the actions of Jack Ruby see the 1978 production, "Ruby and Oswald" in which Michael Lerner does a much better job as Jack Ruby and Jim Leavelle, the police officer handcuffed to Oswald when Oswald was shot actually plays himself.

2 out of 5 stars I am curious Rubenstein.......2004-06-23

since one-half of my lineage is undoubtedly related to Jack, I am curious about all things Rubenstein, and this just came on The Box so I'm cking it out...but I have a beef...why does Hollywood persist in casting non-Jewish actors as Jewish characters, esp. Danny Aiello (in this and at least one other, which title I dis-remember, it's about Jewish widows in Pittsburgh(?)) are there NO jewish actors available to do this schlock and who can bring to the role, at the very least, an authentic rendering of "schmuck" and "schlmiel"? Aw schucks, this whole thing schux! Aiello is just not believable when he says "I'm Jewish"!

4 out of 5 stars muddled but fascinating.......2003-08-14

There are spoilers in this review, but you should already know the historical details anyway.

"Ruby" isn't a good movie, but it *almost* was, and long stretches of the movie show us glimpses of the great movie it could have been. These portions of the movie are good enough to be worth owning the DVD for (especially if you enjoyed Oliver Stone's "JFK" for the look and feel of it rather than factual analysis).

The story takes what little is known about Ruby's shady life - that he was a burlesque club owner who had connections to organized crime and the CIA - and riffs on this entertainingly. However, the idea that Ruby's motive for shooting Oswald was "to expose the whole thing" makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, especially knowing that he made no great revelations about the conspiracy after he thrust himself into the public eye. How do you expose a conspiracy by silencing a key conspirator?

For some reason, the director chose to portray the mobster Santos Trafficante under the transparent guise of a character named Alicante. The fictional character of Candy Cane is rather pointless, especially since she seems to be a total fabrication and not based on any of Ruby's actual strippers. The infamous Jada is nowhere to be seen in the film, which is one of the biggest disappointments for me.

The look and feel of the film is great, though. It's an enjoyable immersion in gangsters, burlesque, spies, and politics, in late-50s-early-60s surroundings. Their period portrayal of Cuba is extremely well done, but rather than recreate Las Vegas, they simply pillaged stock footage from Elvis Presley's "Viva Las Vegas". This perfectly illustrates the film's uneven level of quality.

4 out of 5 stars An addition to the intrigue.......2003-07-01

In "Ruby", veteran actor Danny Aiello does a superb job of portraying the man who will forever be remembered for silencing the accused assassin of President Kennedy.
Aiello almost makes a better Jack Ruby than Jack Ruby himself.
Aiello gives a memorable performance and gives valuable insight as to why Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald. Hint: It wasnt why the Warren Commission said he did. There were much more conspiratorial and sinister reasons.
This movie will certainly add to the intrigue of the JFK Assassination conspiracy.
It paints Ruby as somewhat of a patsy himself, like Lee Oswald was.
Sherilyn Fenn does a great job as "Candy Cane" one of Ruby's strippers.
You really feel for Ruby and Cane at the end of this movie.
This movie also has a very stunning scene of the JFK Assassination, and it was filmed in Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy was killed.
If you are interested in the JFK assassination, the Mafia's vendetta against Castro, or the corruption of the Dallas Police at the time of the JFK murder, you will find this movie very interesting.
I hope you enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars One of dolphs best.......2003-04-27

To be clear this is definatly not dolphs best film, but it is nowhere near his worst. I would say its one of the better directed and produced movie he was in. His performance in the movie is probally in the top five of his career. The action scenes... Well they are very well staged and look real good. The director tried to make them resemble brotherhood of the wolf a little bit, and he didn't really succed. But the directors real weakness in the action was the gunfights. He did not stage them right and didn't do a job editing them. The real flaw of the movie was the last gunfight it was a major letdown. Still a solid movie with a some good action sequences 4 stars!!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Movie.......2003-04-06

Despite the fact that I'm a Dolph Lundgren fan, I hated this movie. It was hard to stay awake watching it. Boring! The movie is way too slow. In this movie he is a restaurateur with two computer experts working for him. There are two main women in the film who have a minor romantic connection with Dolph, but it fails to please, partly because these women aren't that attractive. In Dolph's films that were make before 1993 the ladies were always attractive and sexy. In this movie, all the woman are strong, but not sexy. Upon the first encounter with one of the women, she immediately starts trying to punch him. Then, there is a restaurant brawl, and of course, she beats up a man.
Dolph does have some fight scenes in this movie but you have to wait a long time to get to them, and they aren't that great.

1 out of 5 stars Dolph is a disgrace to his own IQ.......2003-03-21

This movie is a sad attempt to do an action movie. Dolph has stared in some good action movies, but this one is not one of them. The story is bad and the acting is even worse, Dolph get his ... kicked all the time but wins in the end.
He has an IQ of 140 but that doesnt help him to know which movies he should aviod starring in.

However all of you who want ot see, know you have a choice.
if you buy it, you will regret it, if you rent it you will wish you choosed another.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly Dolphs best ever!!.......2002-03-09

As a long time Dolph fan the last few years have not been kind. Dolph has churned out films irregularly and most have been bad. Nearly a year after my last "new Dolph film" Hidden Agenda has finally arrived in my mailbox. Dolphs last was the dire Agent Red. So the long awaited release of Hidden Agenda left me concerned and as I loaded up the DVD in excitment the rather blocky, crude and dull graphic that said lions gate entertainment popped up filling me with more concern.
I then started the movie and from minute 1 to the end the movie screamed class! it looks every inch an A movie, from the cinematography to the explosive action scenes and considering this was shot on a budget, most likely, no more than 10 million thats quite something. Of course the glossy overcoat of the movies visuals are thanks to cinematographer Sylvain Brault, who has been nominated for several awards in his field including an Emmy.
Anyway the plot is good and so is the dialogue. It also seems that research has gone into the various gadgets that these sort of agencies use. The direction is surprsingly first class from Marc S Grenier and I hope Dolph works with him again. His style is reminiscent of John Woo and the Wachowsky Brothers, from the slo-mo fight scenes and gun play to the subtle sound editing used. This is a well written thriller and it features more than enough action sequences for this type of flick. Dolph's martial arts are utilized to full effect thanks to the direction, editing and choreography and we also get the best out of Dolph in the acting department. If you prefer the more all out action approach for a Dolph flick then this will not float your boat in the same way as the Punisher but if you want Dolph in something more clever which also includes impressive action then you should definately purchase this. Whatever your Dolph preferance this is worthy of a rental. I personally think this was his best. It had a good mix of top acting, story and action as well as top draw cinematography and features some impressive explosions. The fight scenes remind me of those in Brotherhood of the Wolf, from the stylish tendancies to the bone crunching sound effects. The few gripes are that at times it gets a little overly complicated and occasionally some shots are quite dark. Also the ending was a minor let down especially compared to the brilliant opening. Still great film that was easily worthy of a theatrical release.

5 out of 5 stars Where are the reviews?!?!.......2002-03-05

Wow Dolph's new movie is here, and it [is great]. A worthy action packed thrill ride, not non stop like some of his movies, but very suspenseful and it has all the right moves. People can say what they want abt. Dolph but he in my opinion is a great actor, and for a Swedish guy, he speaks english like it was a first language. He is very realistic in his movies with his fighting style, and he does some great fight scenes in this. Of course he was a kick boxing champ, so he knows his stuff...B-movie or not, it is still an awesome movie with plenty of excitement and splendid acting. Keep it up Dolph, direct to video or hopefully one day theatrical again. Actually I believe this film was released in theatres in Europe as alot of other Dolphs films are. Anyway, action fans alike, definitely add this to your collection. Enjoy!!!

Description

John McWhirter is a hard-drinking reporter whose award-winning career is slipping away. But he's just been handed the story of a lifetime and his editor wants the scoop. A group of radicals want McWhirter to protect a beautiful fugitive who is actually a Palestinian operative on the run from the FBI and an assassin. As the pulse-pounding action builds to an astonishing climax, McWhirter must fight for both the woman he loves and the story of a lifetime--and hope he doesn't have to choose between them.

3 out of 5 stars UNFORTUNATELY, THE SCREENPLAY WINS OUT........2004-09-29

Fred Ward enjoys a rare starring assignment in this Canadian made melodrama, cast as an award winning New York City reporter who has seen palmier days, yet has decided, when given an opportunity, to write the most significant story of his career, one in which his private past forms a critical chapter. John McWhirter (Ward) had belonged to a radical left-wing organization during the 1960s that attempted to bomb an R.O.T.C. building, but his identity was not disclosed by those who were arrested and sentenced to substantial prison sentences. Shortly after two of the bombers are released, they pressure McWhirter to provide a safe house wherein a Peruvian refugee (Rachel Ticotin) may hide, and when he agrees to the task as payment for his moral debt, he quickly finds himself enmeshed in dealings with such as the C.I.A., the F.B.I. and Palestinian terrorists (although strangely the subsequent murderous proceedings apparently occur without involvement by the New York City Police Department). Director John Bradshaw is notably competent with use of extras, therewith smoothing the flow of action, and his oversight of editing and other post-production processes assist in keeping the film interesting, but the storyline, and chiefly its rushed and logic bereft ending, largely jettisons his endeavours. There are curious casting choices, with Virginia Madsen rather uncomfortable as a metropolitan area newspaper editor, while Penelope Ann Miller thoroughly revels in her eccentric turn as a C.I.A. contract killer, while sterling actors Christopher Plummer and Kim Coates are too lightly used as F.B.I. agents; Ticotin garners the performing laurels, creating her part as an ambiguously actuated fugitive. Cinematographer Barry Stone provides well-composed scenes despite ineffective utilization of flashbacks; in a final analysis the script is what most matters here and a coherent narrative structure requisite for such an ambitious plot as this is simply not forthcoming.
