When the evil magician Sokurah (Torin Thatcher) shrinks Princess Parisa (Kathryn Grant) to roughly half the size of a Barbie doll, only one thing can restore her: the egg of a Roc. The Roc, of course, is a gigantic bird that lives on the remote island of Colossa. Sinbad (Kerwin Mathews) hires a crew of mutiny-minded convicts and sets sail, Sokurah in tow, but runs afoul of a fire-breathing dragon, a very ticked off Cyclops, and an equally crabby two-headed mutant Roc. This swashbuckling adventure was the first installment of the Sinbad films, and decades later it still has the power to hold viewers spellbound. Thatcher is terrific as the sinister, shaven-headed Sokurah, mugging perfectly for the camera, and Mathews is suitably dashing as Sinbad.

As in all Sinbad films, though, the real stars are the Dynamation creations of Ray Harryhausen. The art of cinematic special effects has taken quantum leaps since 1958, which makes it so amazing that his work still looks as fine as it does. Harryhausen creates a world of fantasy where dragons and grotesque one-eyed humanoids battle to the death, one where it's very easy for adults to suspend their disbelief and watch the action with the wonder of a child. Seventh Voyage not only set the stage for further Sinbad adventures, but was a landmark film in the fantasy genre, opening doors for sword-and-sandal Hercules epics and countless other excursions. Few films, though, have the artistry that Ray Harryhausen's effects display in this movie. For great escapist fare for kids and adults alike, look no further than the first Sinbad film. --Jerry Renshaw

A skeleton grabs a sword and slashes viciously at Sinbad. A 9-foot-tall Neanderthal man fights to the death with a saber-toothed tiger. All the while, the boys and girls in the fourth row forget about their popcorn and are hypnotized by the images on the screen. It's hard to believe so many years have passed since the last Sinbad movie held kids spellbound at Saturday matinees. The movies were never perfect, with stories that were sometimes little more than frameworks to drape Ray Harryhausen's special effects over. The performances left a bit to be desired at times, and the direction could be a bit choppy. What they did accomplish, however, was to give countless 8- and 10-year-olds their first taste of the magic that motion pictures were really capable of. Those grade-schoolers, of course, took with them an appreciation of that movie mojo that would extend to films like 2001, Star Wars, and countless other movies in the sci-fi and fantasy genres.

Ray Harryhausen was the preeminent special effects wizard in Hollywood for decades. With credits that date back to 1949's King Kong remake Mighty Joe Young, Harryhausen brought his creatures to life with painstaking stop-motion animation, with a realism that no one else's work could touch. Computers now do all the heavy lifting for cinematic special effects, and although the techniques of CGI are often time-consuming and tedious, they can't match the artistry and warmth of a Harryhausen Cyclops or troglodyte creature. Too often it's tempting to see beyond the eyeball-dislodging effects of a CGI dinosaur and picture a technician toiling away in front of a computer. Considering the tedious frame-by-frame repositioning of stop-motion figures, something like the six-armed Kali figure in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad is astonishing in the untold hours of labor that went into giving it life. Even more mind-boggling is the fact that it comes alive with grace and fluidity, without a trace of abruptness or jerkiness.

It's always a good time to revisit the Sinbad series, for all its imperfections and flaws. The movies are still tremendously entertaining escapist fare, still capable of inspiring new generations of budding movie buffs to create imaginary worlds with the magic of movies. --Jerry Renshaw

4 out of 5 stars A Harryhausen hat trick.......2007-07-04

For a little over twenty bucks you get three movies featuring two of the Doctors from Doctor Who, some beautiful women, the son of The Duke, and a whole bunch of creatures conjured up, by Ray Harryhausen with all of the charm and emotion he always brings to his works. And in the end it really is Harryhausens stop-motion magic that makes these films worth watching. I grew up on this sort of stuff, and even after all these years I still get a kick out of them. While most films today shoot for realism, what you get here is a true feeling of fantasy. The scripts are pretty much interchangable, the acting isn't always great, but in the end they manage to rise above their flaws and deliver a whole lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Sinbad Collection.......2007-06-27

What a great collection. I bought these to share with my children and they love them.

5 out of 5 stars HARRYHAUSEN TAKES THE TORCH FROM O'BRIEN WITH THESE CLASSICS!.......2007-03-08

If I think of a Cyclops, there is only one that comes to mind(I know there were two in this movie). It is the Cyclops in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. If I think of a fire breathing Dragon, it is from this great movie I see the definative Dragon! Ray Harryhausen has created so many incredible creatures it is amazing that there are some people out there that just don't know what they are missing. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad is another classic included in this set. The least of the three movies included in this set is Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, it is a good installment showing what a master craftsmen Harryhausen had become! The DVD set has great transfers and some nice extras. This is essential Harryhausen.

good stories!

5 out of 5 stars HARRYHAUSEN IS THE MASTER OF STOP MOTION!.......2007-03-25

This is probably Ray Harryhausen's crown jewel! I love all of his work and the Ymir(from 20 Million Miles to Earth) is my favorite RH creature, but the Cyclops and Dragon are the definitive versions for me in movie history! This is a great fantasy adventure film, with marvelous special effects. If you are young and are not familiar with Ray Harryhausen's work, long before there were CGI creatures they had to create these monster's 3 dimensionally and no one did it better than Mr. Harryhausen! Willis O'Brien may get the credit for creating Stop Motion, but Ray(having been influenced greatly by seeing King Kong)perfected it! There is a quality that is lost with CGI that Ray acheived with his creatures. These films may seem dated to some now,but they are treasured by those of us that grew up with them! I can't tell you how many of our great actors and directors have been influenced by this man. This is a classic and deserves it's due!

5 out of 5 stars Five golden stars for Ray Harryhausen.......2007-02-17

In case you're new to the planet, this is a must "welcome to the world of Ray Harryhausen" flick. This movie is legendary. . .in more ways than one.
They headlined this movie on cable channels TNT monster-vision marathon, using the cyclops as the prime promo monster! Without a doubt, the cyclops is classic in every way, only to be competed with by the finale cave imprisoned fire-breathing dragon, and of course, the woman turned into snake sequence. All are top-notch throughout! Kerwin Matthews is the most believable Sinbad in any movie ever made, and the villain is corrupt, evil, two-faced as they come. Colorful images will have you fine tune the shades of your TV set. Great for the kiddies, and fun loving adults alike.

3 out of 5 stars Classic Creature Animation.......2007-01-12

This was my favorite movie when I was a small child. I hadn't seen it since the 50s when it was in theaters. I still found it enjoyable if somewhat lacking in quality of both acting and writing. The scenes with the monsters still remain wonderful examples of the time and were what I remembered most. The story is much simpler than I recalled, the plot thinner and the acting mostly awful, but I still liked it because of the fond memories it brought back.

5 out of 5 stars Great Escapist Fantasy.......2006-12-02

I love nearly all films that feature Ray's Special effects, but Im also a big fan of any story featuring Sinbad, yet the SInabd trilogy are by far the greatest movies based on that character. You need to see these films, they are fun, filled adventures filled with some impressive StopAnimation.

4 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2006-11-10

This film enchanted me as a kid, and guess what? It still holds up. It's a landmark in Ray Harryhausen's career, but Bernard Herrmann's inventive and infectious score is what keeps the film resonating in your mind for days afterward.
