Pam Grier is Friday Foster, a photographer's assistant at a glamour magazine assigned to cover the secret arrival of a reclusive black millionaire (Thalmus Rasula). "Just get your cute little behind out there and take your little pictures and goddammit don't get involved!" Of course she does: The scene erupts into an attempted assassination, and Friday digs up a conspiracy that reaches to Washington, D.C., and involves sassy, flamboyant fashion designer Eartha Kitt, lascivious but good-at-heart minister Scatman Crothers, and a powerful black congressman. Yaphet Kotto costars as a good-natured P.I. she tags along as a sidekick and bodyguard, and Carl Weathers makes a strong impression as a silent but deadly hit man systematically silencing potential witnesses. The script feels more like a comic book than a movie (it was inspired by a newspaper comic strip), with Grier playing Friday as a plucky, resourceful amateur, stealing cars and stalking killers armed with nothing but a fully loaded camera. She's better as the street-smart pistol-packin' mamas of Coffy and Foxy Brown, but still commands the screen every minute she's on. Arthur Marks fills the film with shootouts and (rather bland) car chases, but the highlights are an assassination by garbage truck and a free-for-all firefight at a religious retreat. Jim Backus costars as a wheelchair-ridden racist millionaire, Godfrey Cambridge plays a flamingly gay conspirator, and Ted Lange is a flashy, fast-talking pimp in two comic scenes. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great, but remake is funnier.......2007-04-08

This is a great movie, and my interest in it was rekindled after seeing the remake with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. While this has a quaint 70s charm to it, the remake is, in my opinion, a funnier and better-made movie. Production value is higher in the remake, certainly, and the jokes are more over the top. I think the original was the best movie they could make on this subject some 25-30 years ago, but they were able to bring more to bear later. I would give this 4.5 stars if the system allowed it -- just a hair below the remake. If you are only going to own one of them, go with the other version.

5 out of 5 stars Great, classic Disney fun!.......2007-03-03

The original Disney smash Freaky Friday features a clever storyline, stellar production and extremely talented cast, including a young Jodie Foster (always a brilliant actress in whatever she's in) in a role which proves she can portray a suburban mother in mind convincingly. An over-the-top performance of the mother by Barbara Harris is executed almost as convincingly. The latest version rivals this because both contain many comedic elements and brilliant acting. A classic for Disney which can be enjoyed by all!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it when I was a kid .. love it still.......2007-01-10

This movie I remember from when I was younger. It's just a feel good funny movie with alot of funny situations. Jodi Foster does a great job and I love the mom ..I love seeing the old decor and clothes they wear.....This beats the updated version anyday in my book!

5 out of 5 stars Outshines the remake!.......2006-01-21

The latest remake of Freaky Friday is actually quite good. However, what it lacks is the wonderful sense of innocence in the 13 year old Jodie Foster suddenly transformed into her stay-at-home mom. The older I get, the more I enjoy this classic comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Jodie Foster becomes Barbara Harris and vice versa.......2005-12-23

The theory in films, as in television, is everyone is gone for the summer. So do not release any heavyweight films until fall. This left summer wide open for Disney. They used to release a new film every other week during the summer.

Then came Jaws, the first major summer hit. Studios realized that summer was time to make money. Therefore, Disney lost their stranglehold using cheap frothy films. Freaky Friday was one of Disney's attempts to recapture this market and this film performed.

Disney kept their family friendly format but upped the ante with better actors and better scripts. Instead of going for big stars, Disney looked for proven actors on their way up. They found Barbara Harris. Jodie Foster had already done Menace on the Mountain, Napoleon & Samantha, One Little Indian and Candleshoe for Disney. She considered Disney as a family. (Remember that this was the old Disney).

Annabel Andrews is your typical fifteen year old. She has a mom (Barbara Harris), dad (John Astin) and pesky younger brother (Sparky Marcus). She admits that at her age she may still love her mother but she can't stand being with her. Her mother has similar feelings.

It's Friday the 13th (before Jason made it famous). It's an important day for both of them. Annabel has a field hockey championship and is to perform at the Aquacade. And mom has the rug cleaner and caterers for a party. So this is a perfect day for them to switch bodies.

Now this may sound as silly as some of the films that ripped off this idea. But this film is no way silly. It really deals with the generation gap when it is at its peak.

This is a tour de farce performance by Barbara Harris. For two thirds of the film, Harris plays a grown woman possessed by a 15 year old. She does this convincingly. (She received a Golden Globe nomination).

Jodie Foster has no simple role either playing a 15 year old being inhabited by a 40 year old. But it is a bit simpler.

This is a must see film for all teenagers and their parents. This is superior to the two remakes.

DVD EXTRAS:

A Look Back with Jodie Foster - Jodie reminisces about her time at Disney and the movie Freaky Friday. You can tell she has a fondness for tenure at the old Disney Studio.

Freaky Friday Interactive Memory Game - This would not entertain even a 2 year old. There are 8 cards and you must match the pairs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars [3.5]- "Is she crazy or something?" - "No, she's just all woman".......2006-11-14

In 'Friday Foster' Grier is getting even closer to 'Cleopatra Jones' territory, but without the fun and style of that movie or its sequel. I was slightly disappointed when I saw it because it didn't deliver the typical kick a** madness you normally get from a Pam Grier movie! The storyline is tame, the forced political correctness is only pesky and the whole stuff lacks in violence and sex, so prepare for blaxploitation in its mildest form!

In here we have Pam Grier, as Friday- a magazine photographer, who is given the assignment of covering the airport arrival of the richest black man in America. But Friday gets more than she bargained for as this routine assignment turns into an assassination attempt. Because Friday was able to get some shots of the would be killers, her life is in danger. Soon, everywhere she goes, people end up dead. Friday's investigations lead her to corrupt government officials, a renowned preacher with an eye for more than the Bible, and something called The Black Widow.

Pam Grier is convincing in the lead, but not as tough as "Coffy" or "Foxy Brown"! This movie actually has one of the best supporting casts of any blaxploitation film, but fails to hold up on its end. If you want to be entertained somehow watch out for the performances of genre greats like Yaphet Kotto plays Grier's detective buddy, and Julius Harris is her boss. Plus there's Scatman Crothers ('Black Belt Jones'), Thalmus Rasulala ('Blacula'), Godfrey Cambridge ('Cotton Comes To Harlem'), Paul Benjamin ('Across 110th Street') and Carl Weathers ('Rocky'), as well as Eartha Kitt who is a hoot as a flamboyant fashion designer, Isaac the bartender from 'The Love Boat' (Ted Lange) and even inexplicably 'Gilligan's Island's Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus)!

This film does have some lighthearted tone in comparison to her other films. That's not to say there aren't plenty of killings, but it never feels as depressing, downbeat, or serious as something like "Coffy." It's a nice change of pace to see Grier laughing and joking with Kotto in many of the film's scenes. The action scenes are good and funny at the same time. One of my personal favorites is the rooftop chase with Kotto and Weathers and the second being the fashion show. The fashion line up was just as crazy because the models showed no form of expression going down the runway while doing a form a vogue-dance that sort of scared me a bit while maintaining a zombie like expression across their face, you have to see it in order to understand it.

I'm a fan of 70s Blaxplotation because it reminds me of my parents era and fashion sense, gotta love them. As I stated before "Friday Foster" may not be a spectacular film but it's still welcome in my movie collection.

3 out of 5 stars Friday Foster.......2006-11-10

Wasn't her best movie but if you're as big a fan of Pam Grier as I am it's a must own to fill out your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Still a Whole Lotta Woman!!!.......2006-02-27

Pam Grier is smokin hot in this blaxploitation classic...and enough "Jive" dialect to keep you laughing for days!!!

3 out of 5 stars So-So Pam Grier Vehicle.......2005-12-27

Pam Grier is fine as the spunky photo-journalist title character and Yaphet Kotto is amusing as her P.I. sidekick helping her ferret out the "black widow" conspiracy. Their efforts are essentially for naught in this sluggishly directed actioner that has the substance of your average Spelling-Goldberg production. Lots of prominent African-American talent on hand(Eartha Kitt, Godfrey Cambridge, Scatman Crothers, etc.) but their impact is marginal. What this film needed was Sid Haig!

4 out of 5 stars Hey, Whatcha Doin' Girl?.......2005-12-24

Friday Foster may not be Foxy Brown, but it's well worth your time if you're into this genre. It does have a catchy little theme song! It doesn't have alot of the action and violence of other Grier films, it's more about unravelling a conspiracy. Jim Backus is given high billing, but only appears in one scene. Carl Weathers is at the bottom of the billing, but appears in most of the film-But that's a good thing, coz who doesn't like Carl Weathers? Yaphet Koto, as usual, is a joy, and actually gets a few laughs. For those like myself who occasionally fantasize coming home from work to find a naked Pam Grier in the kitchen making goulash, will enjoy the two topless scenes. Foster sure has no problem jumping into the sack with people in this one. Basically all I can say about Friday Foster is that it's a sure bet if you dig Pam Grier and/or blaxploitation movies. I know I dig.

In the wonderfully entertaining Freaky Friday, teenager Anna (Lindsay Lohan) and her forty-something psychiatrist mom Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) have sunk into a rut of frustrated bickering--until a magic spell causes them to switch bodies. Suddenly Tess finds herself faced with petty teachers, vicious rivals, and a hunky boy, while Anna has to cope with her mother's neurotic patients as well as her befuddled fiance (Mark Harmon), who doesn't understand why his bride-to-be is suddenly recoiling from his embrace on the eve of their wedding. Both Lohan and Curtis turn in deft, delightful performances, with Curtis showing a surprising flair for physical comedy. The movie even manages to explore serious issues about fractured families, new parents, and adolescent sexuality with honesty and empathy--and without making the story stop dead in its tracks. It's a mother-daughter film that fathers and sons can enjoy just as much. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars An extremely dumb movie!.......2007-05-21

I can't stand these ignorant teenage girly movies with an igorant mother daughter feud where girls nagging that they need privacy with a cel phone and mommy saying oh you think my life is perfect and everything. I don't know if anyone realizes but movies like this are making teens look even more dumb than ever. About this movie mother and daughter swap bodies and experience their lives and issues completely annoying and unfunny. I hate this movie and by the way lindsay lohan sucks.

This product is no longer available in stores, so I was happy to see that I could purchase it from Amazon. It arrived at my home in just a few days and in perfect condition. I have found Amazon a very convenient way to purchase items and am extremely pleased with the excellent service.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it........2007-02-07

I watched this movie with my 13 year old son. We'd been bickering one afternoon, and he went to his room to get away from me. This movie came on the TV. I watched the first 5 minutes and thought it was so perfectly humorous, I called my son in to watch it. We both loved it. The themes between a teenage girl & her mom can apply in some respects to what a teenage son and his mom experience. My son & I both have to see good acting for a movie to truly appeal to us, this has it. Lindsay Lohan's partying ways in her personal life overshadow her acting abilities, but with the right roles, she's great, and she flawlessly pulls this role off. Jamie Lee offers the perfect portrayal of a teenager in an adult body. Two pivotal characters who appear for only a brief time are the mother & daughter who run the Chinese restaurant. They couldn't be better at these small but important parts in this story. One of my favorite movies.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing freaky movie!.......2007-02-06

This is really great film! Starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, 'Freaky Friday' is a magical film about a teenager and her mother who swap lives. They inherit each other's bodies and have got to live as each other for the day. This includes being the bride at a wedding rehersal and being the lead guitarist in a rock band.

This movie has got the best soundtrack ever! Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) is in a rock band called 'Pink Slip' which plays such great music. Some of their songs are played throughout the film, meaning you can watch a brilliant film and listen to the best music at the same time!
This film is a must-buy for all the family.

5 out of 5 stars Freaky Friday, an awesome movie!.......2007-01-09
