3 out of 5 stars Let's play hockey!.......2006-08-08

I've never been a big fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme, and as of last night, had never watched a film of his before. Although I did feel like watching Street Fighter a few years back, but I was really into Kylie Minogue at the time. And I was young. That's an excuse right?

I was ended up pleasantly surprised by his acting - for some reason, I'd got it into my head that he's not that good an actor. OK, he was alright, but that doesn't mean I'm going to go rushing out to buy all his films.

There's nothing new about this film, but it'll grab your attention the whole time it's on the screen. It's a clone of many other movies, and and it itself, has probably been cloned over the years. What's terrific is the build up to the finale. It's one of those movies, where just when you think surely it's finished now, it brings out another twist, or another explosion, and you're swept along.

There's a few silly moments included in the film - Van Damme fighting a woman in a penguin suit for example, it's so funny to see and must have been embarrassing to film! :) But it ended up with the woman in the penguin suit someone that could be easily killed off and no one worries about her.

Three quarters of the way through the movie Van Damme decides to take a quick break from all the hard work - and play some hockey! At first I totally did not realise it was Van Damme, for some reason, I thought it was one of the bad guys. It wasn't until the over done "I love you" moment, that I realised who it was.

Unfortunately, Van Damme is far overshadowed by bigger, better action heroes, despite his best attempts at an impression of Bruce Willis throughout. Arnie & Sly obviously have the bigger muscles, and dare I say it, Mr Seagull has the overall size. Who would win in a punch up?

What I was most looking forward to about this was seeing little Ross Malinger again, who I best knew from Sleepless In Seattle. He doesn't play a different character, or look any older (who else wanted him to stand up & shout out "I preferred my daddy in Sleepless In Seattle!")

Overall, it's a pretty good action movie, doesn't test the braincells too much, and is pretty good fun.

3 out of 5 stars Alright kids, you stay here while I go and save the 20,000 people in this stadium ok. And I have to save the vice president too.......2006-07-23

And then he goes and plays hockey!

Overall I have to say that this flick was one of the stupidest movies ever but the production values are high and the acting is pretty good. Very unusual for a Jean Claude movie. I even remember some classic lines from the hockey announcer. I wouldn't rate this as one of Damme's better movies, but then again, it is really not far off. All in all, this was a fun movie, if you are not over the age of 13.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-07-04

Again, this product was really new like you always say it and there was no defect whatsoever. Also, the picture quality was clear as well as the sound and I really want to thank you guys once again for the good job you do in reminding people for their
orders with you.In conclusion,I look forward to doing more business
with you in the future and thank you for being one of earth's biggest selection on the planet.

Sudden Death

I got this movie because I was a Powers Boothe fan, and came to like the film for itself. It's gotten a lot of poor reviews, but I disagree and I think the film has a lot of value mainly because of the chemistry between the actors. My favorite parts of the film are those with interaction between Emily and Joshua Foss (Powers Boothe's character, never mentioned by name except in ending credits.) The duel of wits between these two is priceless and this is the best character (Emily) Powers Boothe ever plays against in my opinion. I believe it bears much more resemblance to the two `Under Seige' films than `Die Hard' as its critics claim. The children make this film so unique, they are a big part of why the characters are where they are, when they are; and why the plot unfolds the way it does. There is violence, and probably young children shouldn't watch it, but older mature teens might like it because of Emily and Tyler. This film deals, at least on a surface level, with many issues such as government ineptitude, job-related disability, divorce/marriage/child custody, and more. Powers Boothe, Dorian Harewood, and Colm Meaney are terrific villains. Powers Boothe especially plays a great sociopath, with the low baseline mood, superficial charm and emotional distance---although more insight than most. Whittni Wright plays Emily McCord, with nothing listed on IMDB for her after this film---a pity really I would love to see more of her. Ross Malinger plays Tyler McCord and he was terrific, I'm happy to see he's moved on to good things since. The film was scored by John Debney, and it's his worse piece of work; subdued especially for an action film, unoriginal, not outstanding in any way although believe me I've sat through far worse. There is an official soundtrack release but good luck finding a decent-priced copy. Debney went on to do a wonderful job on `Passion of the Christ', whodathunkit and he got a well-deserved Oscar nomination for it. My gripes: This is the tenth anniversary can we PLEASE have a widescreen release I think we've waited long enough, and a Collector's Edition with a Powers Boothe commentary would be nice but I won't hold my breath...Not a lot of extras on the DVD, but a few good behind-the-scenes items... the idea that NOONE needed to go inside or outside the stadium during the game, or that noone would have a cellphone or that there would be a media blackout for something like this REALLY stretches credulity. It is worth a $10.00 price just to have a good piece of cinema history. I would like to see a prequel or a sequel, say, with Emily and Joshua Foss meeting up someday but now I guess thanks to `Deadwood' Powers Boothe is too famous to do a sequel (and Foss seemed QUITE dead at the film's end, but this is Hollywood after all). Finally: Recently an audio book of `Sudden Death' was released on audiotape narrated by Powers Boothe, it is terrific and worth the price if you can find it. If you disliked the movie you might like this audiobook, if you liked the movie you'll LOVE this audiobook.

4 out of 5 stars useful and concise.......2007-06-27

While I wouldn't advocate relying on a DVD to replace Red Cross CPR training, it was a perfect refresher for me (trained <5 years ago) and enough to make me feel more comfortable with babysitters after they viewed it. It gives all the necessary steps in a clear (if not a little cheesy) way and is concise enough not to bore you to tears.

1 out of 5 stars Outdated info.......2007-03-30

This video has outdated information on the correct ratio for CPR. Needs to be updated!

1 out of 5 stars not very good.......2006-11-10

take a class; I did after watching this video and learned much more hands on. I think any video alone won't work at all

5 out of 5 stars Gets to the point.......2006-09-16

I thought this video was good. It gets to the point and lets you stop and rewatch things. I don't need lenghty explanations on how and why, I just want to know how to save a life if I need to. I am buying this for myself and my children's grandparents because I think the video is to the point enough to keep the grandparents interested in watching it all. Not too long and boring.

5 out of 5 stars Be prepared to save a childs life .......2006-08-10

I highly reccommend that you take the time to review this video. In as little as 15 minutes you can obtain the skills necessary to save a childs life. Can you imagine what this would mean to you if you were ever in that situation and needed to do CPR on a child. The instructor does a great job demonstrating all the skills needed to preform CPR on a child. Don't take a chance and find yourself in a situation without these CPR skills. As a grandparent I know I am better prepared, having reviewed this video, to do CPR on a child if I ever need to.

Sudden Fear is one of those noir gems about a love-hate relationship between a husband and wife that's doomed from the very beginning. Jack Palance plays an ambitious actor rebuffed by playwright and heiress Joan Crawford. He later romances and marries her before falling under the dark spell of ex-girlfriend Gloria Grahame. When Palance and Grahame plot to get her fortune, the evil scheme backfires with ironically twisted results. Palance has no idea how much his wife truly loves him, and she has no idea how sinister he truly is. It's a fascinating if contrived film, with wonderful nuances and sensitive performances by the three leads. --Bill Desowitz

Description

Joan Crawford turns in one of the most emotionally charged performances of her career as a playwright who must use her plotting skills to save her own life, in this beautifully crafted film noir thriller. Nominated for four Academy Awards, "Sudden Fear" is an unbeatable combination of lush melodrama and drop-dead suspense.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sudden Fear.......2007-06-26

Miller's Oscar-nominated "Sudden Fear" pairs queen of melodrama Crawford with dashing villain Palance, while Grahame sizzles as his greedy, scheming mistress. With its atmospheric lighting and stark cinematography, the film is exemplary of noir-thrillers of the time, but screenwriter Lenore J. Coffee gives the plot an extra twist by having Crawford discover the murder plan via Dictaphone-and then orchestrate her revenge. The resulting game of cat and mouse, which ends with a climactic nighttime chase, is the heart-pounding fun of "Fear."

2 out of 5 stars American Kabuki.......2007-05-14

The first half of David Miller's noirish melodrama proceeds like a variant of the standard heiress-marries-murderous-cad film, such as SUSPICION, BORN TO KILL, and THE HOUSE ON TELEGRAPH HILL. Though the film is especially well shot, the acting is very strange. Jack Palance tries gallantly as the cad, but Gloria Grahame purses her mouth too much in evil prissiness; Joan Crawford, as an heiress-playwright (how many of those do you suppose there are in the world?), does her usual post-MGM routine of alternately shrilling orders at people and then using her peculiar irritating whimper to cozy up to her new husband Palance, whom she foolishly believes is wildly in love with her. Then, halfway through the film, everything changes when Crawford listens to an accidental recording of Palance and Grahame plotting her murder: as she listens, she rolls her eyes in terror and bites her knuckles and strides up and down her well-appointed study in anguish. As in POSSESSED (1947), the director seems to be taking advantage of Crawford's background in silent film. The acting becomes more and more gestural and stylized as both words and naturalism go right out the window. The rest of the film is almost all done in pantomime`as Crawford weaves her own counterplot against Palance's and Grahame's murderous schemes.

The stylization of gestures and movement only directs your attention more to her outlandish makeup and hairdo and his equally bizarre facial features; as a result the second half seems like an American version of Kabuki theatre. But for all the praise the film has garnered it's really not much fun. Crawford was incapable of being likeable in this latter half of her career, and outside from a few choice moments where she imagines how Palance might do her in (including a wonderfully hilarious shot of her falling in terror to her death from a skycraper), this is the rare later films of hers that is not much relieved by camp humor. The film has its own odd brand of ingenuity, but it's ultimately not much fun.

4 out of 5 stars Crawford has great moments.......2007-05-11

We all know how famous Crawford was for the melodramas' and the often overacting (think of Queen Bee). However, in Suddent Fear she is truly convincing as the wife who has just discovered her husband is out to kill her, hence the title.

Some very tense scenes in this classic film noir. Crawford herself disputed the choice of Jack Palance as the leading man saying he was not attractive enough for the lead. She was right, he looked very odd, almost plastic. That aside, Jack still puts in a good performance.

The DVD is heavily overpriced. Why it needs to be so expensive is anyone's guess. Especially considering the dismal transfer to DVD. Yes, it is as bad as you have read about in other reviews. No Restoration whatsoever. No extras. Should really be alot cheaper than it is. You are paying for Joan Crawford really.

4 out of 5 stars Stylish Thriller With Crawford at Her Best.......2007-02-25

Joan Crawford delivers one of her finest performances in this 1952 suspense thriller. "Sudden Fear" has all the classic noir trappings, with enough plot twists to keep you on edge. Jack Palance and Gloria Grahame are a perfect match for Crawford's cat-and-mouse theatrics -- guided by David Miller's razor-sharp direction and Charles B. Lang's Oscar-nominated cinematography. Despite a less-than-stellar print and no extras, this Kino DVD is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I'm sooo happy.......2007-01-31

I am sooo happy now that I finally have this DVD - rarely recognized fantastic film noir - Joan's best and Jack Palance's first movie break. Riveting. Arrived on time and in perfect condition!

Gantz is an anime for a more teen to adult audience. killing, fowl language and sexual situations (everything we americans are lacking in in our own tv shows) fill every episode of gantz. while the first dvds only contain 2 episodes each the later dvds make up for it with 3 or 4 episodes. if you love pokemon you might wanna skip gantz. but if you have good taste then i strongly urge you to get hooked on this series.
