As unflinching and bleak as it is beautiful, Tim Roth's directorial debut, The War Zone, is remarkably accomplished filmmaking. Adapted by Alexander Stuart from his own novel, the film centers on a family that has just moved from London to the wind-swept English seaside during winter. The relative isolation soon reveals an ongoing incestuous relationship between the working-class father (Ray Winstone) and his 17-year-old-daughter, Jessie. The middle-class mother (Tilda Swinton) has just given birth to their third child and desperately avoids knowing the truth, leaving Tom, the younger brother, with the horrific responsibility of exposing the family secret. Fearless in its hard-fought depiction of incest, The War Zone pulls no punches; this vivid portrayal of abuse within a family and the scathed consciousness that results is not for the faint of heart. True to his theater background, Roth doesn't explain how or where such brutal choices were first taken, choosing rather to let the actors bear the ambiguities and anguish of a terrible knowledge in the their body language. --Fionn Meade

Description
Hermann Goering's Secret State Police were tasked to arrest and torture confessions and information from supposed enemies of the Reich. All the powers of the Judiciary were taken into its hands and the courts rendered superfluous. A compelling account of one of the true horror stories of the century.
Customer Reviews:
Must have for history buffs.......2007-01-05
Interesting to say the least. The documentary on the Gestapo was informative to a tee. The only fault I found was that some emphasis could have been placed on the more dubious characters that made up the Secret State Police such as Klaus Barbie ( The Buthcher of Lyon) etc.. Otherwise well worth it. A must have for those who are interested in the goings on in the Third Reich.

Hitler's War.......2006-03-16
A correct account of Hitler's raise to power and fall to disgrace
Most of the stock footage I have seen before but there's only so much film to go around. The dialog was eloquent and flawless.
There was rare footage that was excellent that I have not seen before.
I watch Hitler's War every week and see and hear new accounts of the Wars.
I definately have a new view on Hitler and the Nazi's after watching this gripping documentary.
It gets to the heart of Hitlers chronic inability to comprehend the realities of war
Hitler's use of past Germanic War History did not help him when the reality of Barbarossa fell on its Head. Hitler's use of time and space lost the war that he had already won. Thank God for that.

This video is not new and is not representative of good documentary work on the history of special forces. This video is a poor compilation of footage of different special forces. Save your money and watch the History Channel.
Save your money.......2005-12-29
If you are looking for some decent *narration* on WWII special operations, this is a fair *audio* track. But for a DVD this is a very poor and tired rendition of primarily foreign special operations during WWII overlaid on old conventional force war footage. At one point the narration was covering saboteurs in France while showing footage of the USS Arizona burning at Pearl Harbor! The narration seems factually adequate, covering a number of WWII foreign special operations, but the video includes virtually no footage of foreign or US Special Forces (USSF). The little footage present is primarily still photos that are displayed for a few seconds with narration that is rarely about the particular photo. Much of the commentary on USSF was based upon the Vietnam experience and the problems suffered by USSF because of the lack of understanding of unconventional forces by conventional commanders. In fact, it seems that the very small portion on USSF was added early in the DVD simply to allow the makers of the DVD to claim the disk included a history of the Green Berets. Following that pathetic check-in-the-block, the narration turned to WWII effectively disrupting any sense of chronology. Much better buy: the National Geographic "Inside Special Forces". That DVD is up to date and "the real deal".
I am a retired US Army Special Forces officer.

The Dead Zone.......2007-04-04
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
"The War Zone" directed by Tim Roth fully confirms its reputation as extremely dark, pessimistic tragic, and highly admirable given the deeply disturbing nature of its subject. Performances are fantastic - natural and honest. As a director, the first-timer Tim Roth is very impressive - he created the atmosphere that makes a viewer suffocated, uncomfortable, and hurt which is appropriate for this type of film. The most talked about scene in a bunker between a father and his teenage daughter as seen by the eyes of their son and brother, Tom is handled with such incredible array of quietly screaming emotions and pain that it almost overpowers the similar scene in "Irreversible" (believe it or not). It is very powerful piece of film-making and deserves all its praise and awards. There is a little "but", though. One of the reasons I wanted to see the film was to compare it to the Alexander Stuart's novel of the same title which the film was based on. With all respect and admiration for what Tim Roth has done, Stuart's book is much darker, more open and goes far deeper in its attempt to understand and explain the tragedy which ruined and destroyed a seemingly happy and loving family.
Fantastic movie if you can get past "the scene.".......2007-03-16
There were two things that made this movie: the directing and the father character.
There's a lot that we don't know about this family. The movie is a tale about emotion and coming to grips with it. There are deeper problems than the incest that goes on between the daughter and father. That is only a symptom. Unfortunately, as the movie underscores, the incest ruins everyone elses lives as well.
Visually it is a beautiful film, filled with drab water-color images. The entire movie you do not know what the hero/intercedory brother is thinking; which is normal for a 15 year old young man.
I think the best thing about the movie is that although everyone outwardly acts in a similar fashion, the characters are all so different, making for a wonderful conflict and climax (please don't read into that!).
Many sexual-phobes are afraid to watch this movie because they're afraid they'll get turned on by watching the one infamous incestual scene. To that I say, "Its just a movie." Yes its a hard scene to watch. I'll leave it at that. Do what you think is right. Anything normally taboo excites strange conflicting emotions in people. Ironically, I think the director knew this and was trying to get us into the head of the son (who was watching it).
All in all a great movie. Very contemplative. (and British)
Incest under the grey sky........2006-07-31
Excellent movie, but I can't give the DVD five stars because there's no optional subtitles and you really need one because all of the characters speak in hushed tones with thick accents. I had to crank the volume and rewind a few times to understand what was being said. Very annoying.
The movie itself though is a minor masterpiece. Set in a bleak two story house near the crashing ocean waves a outwardly devoted father has quit being the protector of his children and instead become the destroyer of generations when he starts anally raping his daughter. By accident the teenage boy sees his older teenage sister and his father in a sexual encounter. He confronts the sister but she denies that anything is happening. He investigates and it's much worse than he imagined.
Not for the faint of heart, would make a good double feature with superior MYSTERIOUS SKIN.
Another Movie You Will Hate To Love!.......2006-07-02
Lara Belmont gives the best debut performance by a teenage girl ever!! Totally unafraid of the camera, and the perfect dollop of real teen marginality on screen. I am also not so secretly in love with Tilda Swinton. This is arguably her best performance as well. There have been many movies with incest as a plot development, ( notably "The Sweet Hereafter.") "The War Zone" is the first movie to DEAL with incest in all its horror. The rape scene is one of the most terrifying sequences ever put on screen. If that scene does not shock you, see your shrink asap!! Serious tip. The commentary track and the interviews help tremendously in your appreciation of the movie. This is in the top five of the social commentary genre. This couldn't be submitted to the MPAA, obviously, so its release was usually ignored, or did not exist.
Disturbing and Horrifying.......2006-02-24
Truly disturbing, but Lara Belmont is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.

Air Wars - Fighter Aircraft of World War II.......2006-08-27
As an avid reader - film viewer of this period of history anything available as long preserved as this is invaluable.
It is surprosong that so much is yet to be learned form this era however, the expose of the engineering and development behind these fighter aircraft realises that, unfortunately, war necessitates the rapid developement in egineering to give an edge to its exponents in the "mechanisation" of war. These DVD's provide an insight that is unavailable from other film in my collection. For those who share an interest in this period of history this DVD is a requirement and should be included in one's collection.
dissapointing.......2006-01-30
I am a big fan of these aircraft and have a collection of DVD's on the subject of World War 2 Fighter Planes. This is a very dissapointing set. I based my purchase on the review I read on this sight, so when I saw this copy I was amazed. The film is of course grainy (although the previous review says it's not!). It's lod it's bound to be grainey! 3 Hours yes but did the person who wrote the review actually watch them? I wonder. Because there is a hell of a lot of repetition across the four featured aircraft, of interviews, of flying footage and even V/O coverage of aspects of the wars these craft featured in. And when the famous German Figther ace Eric Hartman is talking the editor cuts away from him to show more footage of aircraft in action. WHY? I would rather have had a chance to see this quite rare footage of the pilot talking and the sound quality is quite poor so it is very difficult to catch what he is saying which is compounded by the fact that we cant see him talking. I had hoped for more indepth knowlege of the different types and factual information rather than all this repetition.
Definitely nice tro see the interviews with these ighter ace's but that not what it sais on the tin!
Great buy.......2006-01-11
The package contains 2 DVD's, which covers 4 aircraft, for a total of 3 hours. The Hurricane, The Spitfite, The 109, and the 110 are all coverd in depth. The footage on the videos is of good quality, and not grainy. It shows not only historical footage of each aircraft, but also numerous flights of newly restored aircraft. The narration is easy to understand and follow. This is a great buy for any aviation fan, and I can see someone watching this a few times and not allowing it to collect dust on a shelf. I bought it used, so I deffinitly got my moneys worth on this one.

A good buy.......2006-11-10
As a retired military officer and lifelong student of history, I like this look at these wars - it's useful to ID common themes and also unique aspects of each conflict.
This dvd was very helpful to me.......2005-02-17
I am familiar with World War II history, the Israeli Arab Wars, and recent American combat, but do not consider myself an expert on any of these areas. I was very pleased with this dvd with all of its detailed information (most particularly with its coverage of El Alamein 1942 which I enjoyed the most due to its interviews of both German and British veterans from the German English desert war itself) on the following battles: Gulf War 1991, Six Day War 1967, and The Battle of El Alamein 1942. For anyone wanting to learn a great deal about some major decisive battles in world history (particularly El Alamein in World War II) I would recommend this dvd heartily. It would work well as a class resource or as a personal primer on these key battles in history.
A line in the desert.......2004-04-30
For those of you that love history, its a DVD set you must have. The documentaries do not show (or talk about) every event that took place during the wars documented in the DVDs. But it is a good price for the quality, and is yet another interesting perspective from commentators who spoke about the wars in these DVDs.

Description
As the allies gathered their strength and resources for the invasion of mainland Europe, the V1 and V2 - Hitler's flying bomb and deadly long-range rocket - rained death and havoc on an already-devastated London. But the capital was not so easily intimidated as they failed to alter the course of the war.

Hitler's Secret Weapons.......2006-03-16
Another good account from the War Zone. I felt that there was not anything done about the Jetplane and Tiger Tanks.
A very excellent story of the Long-Range-Rocket that would have been sent to New York or Washington if Hitler had not lost the war.
If Hitler used these weapons againist military targets instead of civilians he might have had a fighting chance to win the war.
Thank God for Hitlers sick ego and his revenge for London that he did not use them properly.
A good account of V-1 and V-2 weapons from eagle media.

If it ain't the heat it's the humidity--and the humor--that makes Torrid Zone one of the funniest movies that James Cagney ever starred in. This one's a real treat, clocking in at a brisk 88 minutes with rapid-fire double-entendres, tropical banana-republic atmosphere (courtesy of the great cinematographer James Wong Howe), and a satirical send-up of just about every south-of-the-border stereotype that Hollywood ever perpetuated. Cagney borrowed Cesar Romero's mustache for his energetic role as Nick Butler, a smooth operator in Honduras (or rather, the Warner Bros. backlot version of Honduras) who's the best banana plantation foreman in the business. Big-shot plantation owner Steve Case (played by Cagney's favorite costar, Pat O'Brien) needs Nick's magic touch to deliver his crop on time, but there's a few complications: Not only is Nick trading gunfire with a local revolutionary (played to the hilt by George Tobias), but he's quite happily distracted by Lee Donley (Ann Sheridan), a savvy chanteuse who can hold her own--and a slick deck of cards--with the big boys. Add some generous comic support from Andy Devine as an incompetent plantation-hand, and additional mischief from Helen Vinson as a sultry seductress (is their any other kind?), and you've got a hot date for fun in the sun.
Cagney's clearly having a blast with his frequent director William Keighley, and Sheridan keeps her costars on their toes, performing a zesty nightclub routine and effortlessly earning her title as Hollywood's "Oomph Girl," a nickname that originated with Warner's well-orchestrated 1939 publicity campaign that made her a star. Available separately or as part of the James Cagney Signature Collection, this first-rate comedy comes with a variety of Warner Bros.' "Night at the Movies 1940" short subjects, recreating the 1940 moviegoing experience with musical short featuring Ozzie Nelson and his Orchestra, the historical short "Pony Express Days," and the Oscar-nominated Bugs Bunny cartoon "A Wild Hare." Two 1940 movie trailers are also included, for The Torrid Zone (which critics compared favorably to the comedy classic The Front Page) and the Errol Flynn warped-history adventure Santa Fe Trail. --Jeff Shannon

The Front Page goes South of the Border.......2007-06-17
Torrid Zone pretty much IS The Front Page with a smattering of Red Dust for added flavor, with Pat O'Brien (who played Walter Burns in the original Broadway production and Hildy Johnson in the 1931 film of the newspaper classic) the unscrupulous banana exporter trying to trick Jimmy Cagney's plantation manager back into his old job in a corrupt South American hellhole, with Ann Sheridan's singer-cum-card-sharp providing the romantic sparks and George Tobias' loveable revolutionary making things difficult at the workplace. Familiarity rather than originality is on the menu, but it's served up with panache and pace and the best production values Warner Bros. can offer. Helen Vinson doesn't exactly offer much competition for Sheridan, Andy Devine provides the comic relief, Jerome Cowan, Bogart's ill-fated partner in The Maltese Falcon, is still having wife troubles as Cagney's intended replacement and TV's original ill-fated Superman, George Reeves, turns up as a treacherous plantation worker. The biggest surprise is the year of production - despite having a classic mid-Thirties look, it was actually made in 1940, although that's probably more of a plus than a minus.
George Reeves also turns up in the color two-reeler 'Pony Express Days' as Buffalo Bill, part of another goodselection of Warner Bros. Night at the Movies short subjects that also includes Bugs Bunny cartoon 'A Wild Hare,' and trailers for Santa Fe Trail and Torrid Zone itself. Warners' DVD also boasts an excellent transfer.
Great movie, great DVD........2007-06-08
Torrid Zone, starring James Cagney, Ann Sheridan and Pat O'Brien, is a movie from 1940, that is full of humor, adventure, action and great characters. Everybody in the movie is perfect for their parts, the timing of the jokes and lines are right on target and the ending makes you feel good. This is the eighth movie that Cagney and O'Brien teamed up for and it shows. They really know how to work together.
Cagney plays a banana plantation foreman who wants to get out of the business but is offered a large amount of cash if he will stay just a little loner. The plantation is having troubles and Steve Case, played by O'Brien, needs help fast. Add Lee Donley, played by Sheridan, who is both singer and card shark and you have a hot, funny, film just begging to be watched again and again.
The DVD is also great. It has, as extras, a vintage newsreel, a musical short, a historical short about the Pony Express Days, the first Bugs Bunny cartoon and some trailers. You can play them all, giving you the feeling of being in a movie theater in the 1940s. Just dim the lights and get some pop corn. Enjoy!
Waiting a Long Time for This Movie.......2007-03-24
This is one of my favorite Cagney movies. Then again, Cagney was my favorite actor of all-time, so there are quite a number of "favorites". I won't go into describing the movie because someone else has already done an excellent job of that. Cagney and Sheridan were paired up in several movies, most notably, Torrid Zone, Angels With Dirty Faces (my favorite Cagney film) and City For Conquest (another favorite). He was paired up with Pat O'Brien even more. O'Brien was also in Angels...
Of course, it helps that Cagney and O'Brien were real life best friends. They sort of had a kind of fraternity among Irish actors, which also included Spencer Tracy and Frank McHugh (who was in a ton of Cagney movies).
At any rate, this is a first rate movie which old movie buffs will love. It's Cagney at his best, Sheridan at her sexiest and good supporting acting from O'Brien and George Tobias.
A really funny film with Sheridan turning on the oomph.......2007-02-10
Warner Brothers was always a studio which did not hesitate to copy the output of others. This hilarious film, made in 1940, is a cocktail of "The Front Page", "Red Dust", "Only Angels have Wings" and others with a showcase role for the very special Ann Sheridan who had been nicknamed "The Oomph Girl" after a major publicity build up in 1939.
The film is set on a banana plantation run by Pat O'Brien who employs James Cagney to help get the crop out on time. Cagney is playing around with the manager's wife, Helen Vinson, and Sheridan arrives, falls for Cagney and the fur flies as the wife and Sheridan spar. There is a subplot with bandits and George Tobias is very funny as their leader.
Cagney sports an absurd moustache and the rapid dialogue between him and O'Brien is excellent. This must be one of the few times when Cagney had a film stolen from him for Sheridan wears one immaculate outfit, tosses off wisecracks particularly towards Vinson and never loses her cool in the heat. This is a first rate comedy performance, even if the circumstances are cliched. She sings a song too in a bar in her usual irresistable flirty style - not a great contralto voice but great delivery. This woman was seriously attractive. It is obvious that no-one was taking the film seriously and the leads were having a ball. Outtakes on a blooper reel from another Warners' DVD verify this.
The print of the film is excellent preserving the crisp black and white photography. The film was produced by Hall Wallis so the production values are very good. The DVD includes an enjoyable "Warner's Night at the Movies" with short film, cartoon etc which add considerable enjoyment to the package. Don't miss this forgotten treasure.

Description
The simple event to describe the outbreak that became World War I was the 1914 assassination of Austria-Hungary's Archduke Ferdinand, the heir to that country's throne, by Serbian rebels. However, when Serbia rejected an ultimatum by Austria-Hungary to bring justice for the killing, what was thought to be a simple one-on-one battle turned into a massive campaign involving numerous countries with alliances to both sides that lasted until 1919.

Good documentary, poor sound........2007-03-14
It's a good documentary, well organized, but the sound is dreadful. The added (and unnecessary) sound effects are so loud that they often drown out the narrator's voice, and the distortion in some places is very bad. I know that it is a bargain-priced item, but the producers should have done a better job.

Description
On July 11, 1798, a body of less than 1,000 men was formally established as a United States Marine Corps. Over the next 100 years, although still relatively few in number, they were frequently dispatched overseas in a key role when U.S. interests were threatened. The Marines saw action in many places. Using some remarkable archive footage, this program develops the valiant story of the U.S. Marines through World War 2 to Korea and Vietnam.
