Sean Connery leads a team of asteroid-battling astronomers in Meteor, one of the last and most unusual examples of the disaster movie craze of the 1970s. In this one, a killer asteroid named Orpheus threatens to collide with the Earth, and Connery must come up with a plan to stop it. Cold war politics date the picture a bit, but they also add some weight to the impending doom facing humanity. Like any good disaster flick, it's populated by an all-star cast, including Karl Malden, Martin Landau, Natalie Wood, Richard Dysart, Henry Fonda, and Trevor Howard. Brian Keith plays Connery's opposite number in the U.S.S.R. While the pacing and special effects are weak compared to similar celestial menaces depicted in Armageddon and Deep Impact, Meteor displays all the benefits of its more powerful cast… not to mention Hank Fonda as President. --Mark Savary

With laughs and gross-outs aplenty, Slither is the best horror comedy since Shaun of the Dead. Having written for the jubilant trash-mongers at Troma Films before scripting 2004's well-received remake of Dawn of the Dead, writer-director James Gunn crafted this hilarious splatter-fest as an homage to the comically violent horror films of the 1970s and '80s, and he gets it just right with a low-budget look, perfect casting, grisly make-up effects and judicious use of CGI gore. The story's a deliberate monster-mash, borrowing from a dozen other movies with its plot about an invasion of slithery slug-like parasites from outer space, arriving (via meteorite) in the redneck town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, where they turn most of the local yokels into flesh-eating zombies. The first victim (played by Michael Rooker) turns into a squid-like, multi-tentacled host monster (kill him and you kill 'em all), and his terrified wife (Elizabeth Banks) teams up with Wheelsy's sheriff (Nathan Fillion, from Firefly and Serenity) and mayor (comedic scene-stealer Gregg Henry) to eradicate the alien threat before Wheelsy turns into Slugville. Gunn handles comedy and horror with exuberant flair, and Slither's greatest strength is that it never aspires to be anything more than it is: 96 minutes of good laughs and gruesomeness, served up with the kind of gleeful abandon that only true horror buffs can fully appreciate.--Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars HORROR/COMEDY AT IT'S BEST!.......2007-07-02

THIS MOVIE IS AS FUNNY AND SICK AS A FILM CAN GET!
AS VILE AS IT MAY BE..IT IS FUN TO WATCH!
IT KEEPS YOU INTERESTED THROGHOUT AND HOLDS IT'S OWN AS BOTH A COMEDY AND A HORROR PICTURE!
IT'S LIKE AN OLD STYLE MONSTER MOVIE MIXED WITH AN INSANE COMEDY!
MICHAEL ROOKER GIVES A GREAT PERFORMANCE!
ALL IN ALL... A GREAT WAY TO PASS 90 MINS!

5 out of 5 stars A funny scary movie!.......2007-06-27

If your a scary movie person like me you will get a kick out of this movie. It is so scary at times and predictable that it gives you a laugh! Definitely would recommend it if you are watching it with friends! Bring the popcorn but be careful... it will end up on the floor and in between the couch.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, bloody, and fun..........2007-05-23

Having grown up with such gems as Invaders from Mars (NOT!) Night of the Comet (Again, NOT!) and a whole host of Nightmare on Elmstreets and Friday the 13ths, I found this movie to be a breath of fresh air. Along the lines of such cult classics as The Toxic Avenger and Nuke 'em High, this film is fun and funny.

The cast is great. Unlike so many movies, horror and otherwise, they seemed natural, and not like a bunch of people acting like other people. Nathan Fillion is one of the rare actors who seems to be this way in everything he does, and it's such a pleasure to watch, from Firefly to Slither. The director, Mr. Gunn seems to be really good with people who can work this way, and I say Kudos!

Not for young kids, and not for people who prefer nothing but hack & slash gore. It's a pretty good story, well done on the visual effects and creature creation, only, they forgot the slime trails....tsk, tsk... But overall, a pleasure to have in my collection.

I would highly recommend this to other people, like me, who have squeamish friends who stay too long.... and besides, you cna watch it over and over and catch some of the in jokes.

4 out of 5 stars I'll order my steak well done from now on.......2007-05-21

Actually, forget about eating meat, I'll just have a salad. This has got to be the most absurd, gross-out, need multiple barf bags film of all time. It's also funny enough not to take too seriously, so it was very entertaining. Just don't watch it right before dinner.
Some slimy alien thingy hitches a ride to Earth on a fallen meteor. It's not really interested in coexisting peacefully with the human race, instead it prefers more of the whole parasitic takeover deal with rampant chaos and destruction. This infection doesn't waste any time spreading throughout the town, the effects are pretty twisted.
Like when one lady's body inflates to the size of a hot air balloon, she exclaims "something's wrong with me!" She looks 10times worse than Veruca Salt at the Wonka chocolate factory.
This movie is over-filled with other slimy grotesque moments with blood and puss and unspeakable filth that goes WAAAAY over the top. You gotta love it!

3 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!.......2007-05-21

This movie was a hilarious parody of the horror genre. The use of effects, over the top acting, everything, combined to make it silly, but very watchable, adventure. It was gross, violent, odd, and probably not worth repeated viewing. But it was fun, and well worth seeing once!

Based on the evidence in Evolution, one thing is perfectly clear: special effects have evolved, but director Ivan Reitman has reverted to primitive pandering. Equally obvious is the fact that Evolution is a de facto rip-off of Reitman's 1984 classic Ghostbusters, but this time there's no Bill Murray to deliver the best punch lines (we have to settle for fellow ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd in a broad supporting role), and the comedy has devolved into a grossfest including deep-rectal extraction of alien insects, fire-hose enemas into a giant alien sphincter, and a full-moon display of David Duchovny's naked posterior. Whereas Ghostbusters was a shrewd, irreverent mainstream comedy that combined gooey spectral ectoplasm with something resembling genuine wit, Evolution is a crude, juvenile romp in which all things slimy are elevated to comedic supremacy.

Granted, that's not always a bad thing. As latter-day ghostbuster equivalents, Duchovny, Orlando Jones, and Seann William Scott make a fine comedic trio, and Julianne Moore is equally amusing as a clumsy scientist and Duchovny's obligatory love interest. Despite the meddling of clueless military buffoons, they join forces to eradicate a wild variety of rapidly evolving alien creatures that arrived on Earth via meteor impact, and the extraterrestrial beasties (courtesy of effects wizard Phil Tippet and crew) are outrageously designed and marvelously convincing. For anyone who prefers lowbrow humor, Evolution will prove as entertaining as Ghostbusters (or at least Galaxy Quest), while others may lament Reitman's shameless embrace of crudeness. One thing's for certain: after seeing this movie, you'll gain a whole new appreciation for Head & Shoulders shampoo. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Much more fun than its reputation suggests.......2007-05-20

Evolution is a lot more fun that its busted summer would-be blockbuster status implies, although like most Ivan Reitman comedies the concept is funnier than the script. For the first half David Duchovny and Orlando Jones have more exposition than jokes to deal with and Julianne Moore is game but is no natural comedienne, especially when it comes to pratfalls, while Ted Levine's clichéd general is a villain too far. But once it hits its stride and the constantly evolving critters that are the real stars of the show start multiplying and threatening mankind with extinction, it's an enjoyable monster mash that even manages to make a joke of its product placement for Head and Shoulders. Like the aliens it's no world-beater, but it's a brisk and enjoyable romp. Nice score from John Powell too.

DreamWorks DVD has a good selection of extras, including audio commentary, deleted scenes and alternate ending.

    5 out of 5 stars hilariously funny.......2007-04-01

This movie was a blast thanks to the director and the cast. The comedic talents of the cast helped make this movie stand out from the more serious invasion movies that have been done before and since.

    5 out of 5 stars Monkey's Uncle Darwin.......2007-03-09

This movie is awesome! It may be no Oscar winner but the characters a lovable, the comedy hilarious and the movie teaches you at the same time. It's one of those movies you have to watch with your friends and family.

    4 out of 5 stars Comedy? I don't think so.......2007-01-16

Well I want to say just one thing. This movie was funny and damn good Science Fiction.

It seemed to fail in the box office because they labeled it a comedy. It was that but more than anything else and most importantly it was DAMN GOOD SCIFI!

If you missed this one, go back and make amends to yourself and see it NOT as a comedy but as some darn good SciFi.

    4 out of 5 stars pleasent surprise.......2007-01-05

never herd of this movie when it was in the theater (mabe it never was i'm not sure). i know it's Not exactly oscar worthy but it's far from a flop too. it has a very good storyline, excellant originality, great choices for cast members, exceptional imagination (creature animation), blended with decent comedy.
a few scenes were somewhat crude for young kids (but that's why it's pg13). overall i realy liked it

Earth is a desolate wasteland in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Humanity has been decimated by an invasion of Phantoms, insubstantial aliens that extract and devour the spirits of living things. The few remaining humans have retreated to a handful of cities that are protected by massive bio-energy shields. The beautiful Dr. Aki Ross (voiced by Ming-Na) and her mentor Dr. Sid (Donald Sutherland) have discovered that the energy signatures of eight key Earth spirits can cancel out and destroy the Phantoms. With the help of Captain Edwards (Alec Baldwin) and his band of marines, they must scour the globe for the last two remaining spirits before General Hein (James Woods) manipulates the refugee government into attacking the aliens with an orbital laser that may also destroy the Earth.

Hironobu Sakaguchi's film is taken from the popular Final Fantasy video game franchise, which is particularly well suited to film adaptation with its series of original stories, but the movie features entirely new characters and settings. And like Toy Story and Shrek, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is completely computer generated. Unlike those cartoon comedies, though, The Spirits Within is a serious science fiction drama with astonishingly human digital actors. Aki, the female lead, appeared in a full-page spread in Maxim magazine's Hot 100 list--and was indistinguishable from the real-life models. The setting and conflict make for incredible action, but it's the larger issues, character interaction, and human elements that really make the movie shine. The Spirits Within is not simply a science fiction movie, in the same way that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is not simply a kung fu flick. The result is a fantastic summer movie with better action and more emotion than Pearl Harbor, and actors more lifelike than those in that other video game movie, Tomb Raider. --Mike Fehlauer

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I would have preferred a live action version of one of the games..........2007-06-21

I will admit, I don't own this DVD. This review is based on having seen it in the theaters.

I was excited to hear about this movie being released, because I enjoyed the games, I had played up through FF8(I don't even remember if 9 was out yet) and I was excited to see my favorite games on the screen. I asked myself, "This is going to be cool! What storyline are they going to come up with this time?"

Unfortunately, I didn't get any indication from any of the reviews in the papers. They all preferred to focus on the novelty of taking computer animated characters and making them all look perfectly real like this was going to be the end of live acting in Hollywood once and for all. Movie reviewers now were debating the pros and cons of computer animated "actors," and I'm sitting there going, "Oh, to hell with that! What's the story about?" Because that's what I loved about the games.

Finally, I saw the movie. And for someone expecting to see a new Final Fantasy-esque storyline on the silver screen, my expectations were not met. First off, after being taken to such places as Baron and Figaro and Midgar and Balamb, why does the movie start off in New York City? Don't get me wrong, I love New York-it's just not Final Fantasy.

Next, the movie is literally all dialogue. Nowhere do you have the random battles, the strengthening of characters in battle, and the preparation for the final face-to-face showdown at the end of the movie. In fact, there was no final face-to-face showdown. The good guys are all on Earth while the bad guy is up in the space station, and he blows himself up.

Square got so hopped up on using the technology that they neglected the plot. They should have started out by creating a storyline using their familiar formula, and then if they wanted to use computer actors to make it, then great. Or if anything, they should have majorly polished the plot they had before handing it to the animators(and if they had done that, they should have used a title other than Final Fantasy).

5 out of 5 stars Final Fantasy is a Must Own SciFi/Fantasy/CG Lovers Classic.......2007-06-16

This is a must-buy! I saw this film at the theaters in 2000/2001 and loved it! I knew I would have to own it one day and having just watched it again for the first time in almost 7 years, I have to say the CG is still impressive, the story line is still top-notch, and anything with Steve Buscemi's (sp?) voice in it still makes me happy! This DVD set is an especially excellent purchase, as it comes with many fun little collector's edition items - added bonuses indeed! So, for anyone who loves SciFi, Fantasy, video games, and/or anything with impressive CG then I say this DVD is a must-own!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, but doesn't follow the video games at all.......2007-06-05

This movie was pretty good on a level of graphics and original storyline. If you are a big fan of the Final Fantasy games though, do not see this movie. It doesn't follow the games at all and you will be wondering why they even call this movie Final Fantasy. It has no relevence at all to the video games and fans of them will be wondering the whole time, What the heck is this?!?! It is all new characters and none of them have ever been seen before from the video games. The storyline isn't anything like the video games at all either. It is pretty much a whole different movie that just happens to have the name Final Fantasy in it.

So, if you haven't played the Final Fantasy video games, then this movie might be pretty good. If you have played the video games before and are a fan of them, then this movie will seem really bad, because it is not at all like the video games and is not what you are looking for in a Final Fantasy movie that is supposed to be based on them. If you are looking for a good Final Fantasy movie based on the games, rent Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Stephan King movie.......2007-03-26

I liked this movie for it's "classic" quality that it delivers in the horror genre. I thought that it was very well done for the 80s and is also a classic of the 80s as well. I had always wanted to see this movie but never got the chance until now. I am very glad that I did and I also added it to my horror collections as well. I highly recommend this movie to anyone that likes the "classic" horror flicks of the 80s.

3 out of 5 stars I love Stephen King-- But the movie does not do his work any justice........2007-03-26

Its almost always better to read the book than to watch a movie especially when it is something written by the master of horror, Stephen King.

This movie is not one of the best representations of Stephen's writing, but it is still good to watch.
    3 stars.

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Thriller/Horror Flick.......2007-02-05

Its a classic horror flick in my mind, i saw it years ago, when i was into the horror scene and it actually carried onto the years where im not so much into it anymore...so i definately give it a 4 star rating.

    2 out of 5 stars Pure cheese........2007-01-28

Back in 1986 this probably passed for good entertainment. We were nearing the end of a decade of glorious cheese TV (A-Team anyone?). It was just different back then. I remember seeing this for the first time in 1987 and actually being scared at some of the scenes, but now in 2007 I'm sitting here watching it and I'm extremely disappointed. If you want to hear ACDC just buy the albums. Skip this tripe.

This 1962 version of The Day of the Triffids has been a TV staple for many years, more probably because of a lasting affection for John Wyndham's original novel than any high regard for the film itself. The premise--a meteor shower blinds almost all of humanity, just as a space-borne strain of ambulatory killer plants begins to proliferate--is so strong that it's easy to overlook the frankly messy realization of it. The film opens well, sticking close to the book, as Howard Keel awakens in a London hospital after an eye operation and takes off the bandages to discover that he can see but most of the rest of the population can't. There are unsettling, effective bits with a plane literally flying blind and the beginnings of panic among the fumbling survivors, and one good Triffid encounter in a fog.

Then the film is strangely compelled to stray all over the map, with trips to France and Spain that have no discernible purpose. Director Steve Sekely's original cut was adjudged so disastrous that an uncredited Freddie Francis was brought in to shoot a whole new subplot, featuring Keiron Moore and Janette Scott in a vine-besieged lighthouse, to thread through the old footage. The results are less satisfying than the later BBC serial adaptation, but it still has some irresistible end-of-the-world and killer-plant material. --Kim Newman

    Description

The Triffids are coming! The Triffids are killing! A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. This chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people.

Note: I really liked this movie as a kid ..and i still love it now...but
I bought the Day of the Triffids, the version put out by a company called cheezy or something....Hey the movie looks great compared to other version, but the last 20 minutes there is no audio, i dont know if its only my copy that has the problem, but i was really dissapointed. If anybody else had that audio problem, please leave me a comment.

3 out of 5 stars crude, but this is the stuff of memories.......2007-05-29

I saw this as a memento to childhood delight, as I vividly recall seeing it with my best pal when it came out. There are wonderful images in it, of the greasy, mysteriously menacing plants striking blind beauties while society falls apart around them.

Of course, if your standard is not to re-live a wonderful time as a child in a cinema of screaming and laughing children, this film will probably do very little for you. Viewed more cooly from my vantage as a middle-aged film buff, it is pretty weak as sci-fi. Little is explained - the meteors somehow cause both blindness and a bizarre transformation in the triffids - and after the chaos of a society falling apart, the plot takes weird twists. One group that the narrative follows forms a kind of family and inexplicably heads to southern europe, where after much danger they escape. The other actors are a troubled couple of scientists, who miraculously discover that salt water dissolves the triffids after much failed study, again inexplicably. And the effects! Very bad compared to what is available today.

Recommended for purposes of nostalgia only, unless you are a connoisseur of clunky monster flicks over lots of beer.

4 out of 5 stars The Horror Classic "Day Of The Triffids" is ownworthy!.......2007-04-08

ok ive Just watched "day of the triffids" and it has been reformatted into anamorphic widescreen, but sadly they left in some of the graininess of the origional film. but to see this classic remastered and even with the few graphical errors, this IS, and always will be, a True Classic! until someone Remakes this movie and doesn't blow it! *waggles finger at tom cruse in war of the worlds* but overall this movie is for the fans of the oldies and the people whom saw this movie in theaters (yes you know who you are) and its worth every cent to go on an adventure like this. truly a rare gem! *a meteor shower blinds most of the humans on earth, leaving the few survivors to fend off the horrific Triffids! before Humanity os destroyed* not too many of the oldies are worth owning but, if you dont own this or like it if i was you i would avoid Golden Oldies like this and if your only happy with Tons of Extras and perfect imagry then this might not be to your liking at this point i suggest renting it to be sure its your thing.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie to watch .......2007-03-27

This is a movie that I enjoyed very much. I had seeing this movie when I was younger but was very hard to find until it came out on vhs and dvd.
I found the fact that it could happen to anyone who is suckered into watching some celestial show and wake up the next day with burned out eye retinas causing permanent blindness.

Not only is the person blind, but the whole world is blind except for the people who did not watch the meteorite shower. Plants, called Triffids become active and unroot themselves and go killing and eating people. Now that is cool. Planes, ships, trains crashing because their pilots or conductors has become blind. A very good movie to watch. Good story and performance.

1 out of 5 stars This is the WRONG "Day of the Triffids". . . .......2007-02-17

Compared to the great 1981 version of the Day of the Triffids, this Howard Keel version is really pathetic.

The 1981 version for some crazy reason has not been made available for the USA. We need it! It is much closer to the great book by John Wyndham. It seems to me when it was first released it was shown both on USA and British TV.

The 1981 version was produced by David Maloney and starred John Duttine and Emma Relph. It really gives you the creeps in the same way the greatest horror movies of aliens wiping us out, such as 'Body Snatchers,' has you looking over your shoulder for weeks afterward. But this 1962, badly reproduced hollywood version? Forget about it.

A complete delight for fans of psychotronic cinema and the Saturday-afternoon creature feature. Writer-director Larry Blamire has distilled every cliché of the drive-in movie era of low-budget horror and put it into The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, 90 minutes of pitch-perfect spoofing. The dialogue is marvelously insipid, and the music (taken from a stock music library) cuts in and out of the action with breathtaking suddenness. It was even shot in Bronson Canyon, location of many a cheap B-picture (one knock: the black-and-white image, shot on video, wears the eye out after a while). Aliens from Mars crash-land, setting loose a mutant, while a mad scientist re-awakens a talking skeleton that could hold the key to world domination. And don't forget Animala, a half-woman, half-animal beatnik! Rowwwr! Blamire allows it all to run on too long, yet hardcore fans of this movie world will be hard-pressed to complain. --Robert Horton

It's hard to add much to the 70+ great reviews already on this site. Lost Skeleton was my favorite movie in years! If you haven't seen it on the big screen do so! If you haven't bought it on DVD, you MUST! If you don't find this movie funny, you seriously need a check-up. I just saw the premiere of their follow-up movie at the Seattle International Film Festival ("The Trail of the Screaming Forehead"), and it, too, was very, very funny! Look for it in your town (and on DVD soon, I hope!). In the meantime, fans can see shorts from Blamire et al. on Youtube (search "Tales from the Pub").

    5 out of 5 stars Cult Classic.......2007-06-02

An absolutely excellent sendoff of the campy science fiction films of the 1940s. What's amazing is how deadpan and serious the acting is: the mockery is done in a deliberate, serious manner without any laugh tracks or winking at the camera, giving the movie a truly authentic feel.

    4 out of 5 stars Intentionally ghastly!.......2007-05-30

Someone from work lent me her copy, and I showed it to a group of friends having only a vague idea what we were getting into. We sort of moaned at the first five or ten minutes. Then when the aliens visited the cabin and sat down, we all cracked up. We had to back it up and watch that scene again -- and then we didn't stop laughing for the whole rest of the movie. We're going to watch it again with a bigger crowd so more people will get the inside jokes.

It really is a B movie, in the tradition of sci-fi and horror from the 50s, just ever so slightly exaggerated. It's full of non-sequiters, recycled props, a cardboard rocket that lands in a broccoli forest, a walking skeleton that is obviously being held up by one of the actors, exaggerated acting, bad science, worse science, etc. It has all the required elements for a sci-fi-horror story: aliens, a space monster, the undead, mind control, a good scientist, his beautiful but ditzy wife (who wears the same June Cleaver outfit the whole way through), an evil scientist, and his sidekick. It takes place out in the middle of nowhere (just out of sight of the Hollywood sign). Characters do things and give reasons for their actions, but at some point you have to give up trying to make sense of any of that and just nod and laugh. That said, the plot hangs together surprisingly (disturbingly?) well, better than many actual B movies I vaguely remember.

    It's intentionally ghastly.

As far as I know, they don't advertise this movie, it just gets passed around by word of mouth.

The bonus features are great. Here's my favorite. The movie was made recently, but in the style of old-fashioned sci-fi horror flicks, they made mock ups of movie merchandise: a board game, a lunch box, paper dolls, halloween costumes... and pictures of all that are included on the dvd.

If you like Plan 9 From Outer Space, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Doctor Who, Galaxy Quest, Amazon Women on the Moon, and Isaac Asimov's elaborate puns, then you'll like this.

The same crew is supposed to be making a follow up movie called Trail of the Screaming Forehead, and we're eagerly awaiting it.

The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that you really have to have the right audience for this movie to be funny. I know plenty of people that don't appreciate this kind of humor like I do and just wouldn't get it.

    5 out of 5 stars Animala!.......2007-05-24

As an admirer of schlock cinema, you would think I spend most of my time revisiting the golden age of bad movies. No, I'm not talking about the 1970s. I watch scads of films released during the Age of Nixon and Carter, most of them appallingly awful, but this decade does not really define bad movie making. We need to look further back, back to the 1950s, to appreciate the truly dreadful potential of b-movie filmmaking. The Red Scare and the Soviet Union's acquisition of the atomic bomb threw America into a fearful tizzy. So did the space race. And what better way to capitalize on people's fears than to incorporate nuclear war and alien invasions into movies. What followed became the real golden age of the bad movies. I don't often go there, not yet anyway, but I know that the 1950s offer a cornucopia of cringe inducing cinema. Movies like "Them!," "The Day the World Ended," and of course "Plan 9 From Outer Space". These films achieve such heights of ridiculousness that it was only a matter of time before someone came along and viciously spoofed them. Enter Larry Blamire's "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra".

We have three important story arcs snaking their way through "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra". The first involves Dr. Paul Armstrong (Larry Blamire) and his wife Betty (Fay Masterson) on an expedition to discover a recently fallen to earth meteorite. Armstrong wants to locate the space debris because he believes the rock contains the rare element atmospherium. What's that, you say? Can't remember seeing that one on the chart back in science class? That's because it doesn't exist outside of this movie. We soon learn, aside from how the discovery and use of this element will benefit the field of science, that just a trace amount of atmospherium would allow a person to travel to the moon and back at least a half dozen times. That's the first plot thread, and Blamire could have made a fun film just by following these two dolts around. He decided to throw in two more ideas. The second arc involves the arrival of a spacecraft--populated by the aliens Kro-Bar (Andrew Parks) and Lattis (Susan McConnell)--in need of repair. Unfortunately, their pet, a hideous beast, accidentally escapes from the ship. They need to capture the creature before it attacks the locals. Too, they need some atmospherium to power their ship.

A third arc tells the tale of the infernal Dr. Roger Fleming (Brian Howe) and his plans to resurrect an ancient skeleton located in, not surprisingly, the Cadavra Cave. Fleming figures out that if he can only find some atmospherium, he can use the element to resurrect the skeleton and conquer the world. Or something like that. It doesn't matter what's going on, however, as the plot soon gives way to comedic antics executed so brilliantly that I sat in front of the television with mouth open in wonder. Blamire took great pains to make sure that his script, especially the dialogue, meshed with the 1950s cinematic atrocities so many people know and love. He succeeds beyond all expectation. Nearly every word, every phrase these characters utter, is stupid on a cosmic scale. Armstrong's fascination with the field of science. Kro-Bar and Lattis assuming the guise of humans and trying to navigate their way through a world alien to them. These things are as stupid as they are brilliant, if that makes any sense. The dinner scenes involving these losers rank as one of the most hilarious sequences I've ever seen in a film.

A few other elements of the film really hit the mark. Primarily, I'm talking about Animala (Jennifer Blaire). A whole separate review could discuss the merits of this odd creature, thrown into the movie just to rev up the camp factor. Created by Dr. Fleming thanks to his illicit use of Kro-Bar's transmutatron, Animala is part woman and four parts of different woodland creatures. Her behavior closely resembles that of a house cat. She purrs, drinks milk, and performs a dance number that truly is a marvel to behold. Honestly folks, you haven't lived until you've seen Animala go through her motions. I'd like to see Blamire make a sequel based around this oddball. This marvelous character aside, everything else mirrors perfectly a bad 1950s movie. The cheesy props obviously picked up at a hardware store, out of someone's garbage can, or on the side of the road work marvelously to recreate the atmosphere of a film only Ed Wood, Jr. could love. The costumes worn by the characters and the silly looking monsters are sublime in their awfulness. I also loved the actors' facial expressions and monotone delivery; they give the term "wooden" a whole new meaning. It's all intentional, of course, but it doesn't seem like it on the screen. It would be easy to think these really are terrible actors working for a terrible director.

The DVD version of "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra," which I suggest you pick up immediately at the nearest retailer, contains several worthy extras that heighten the viewer's enjoyment of the movie. Two commentary tracks--one with Blamire and other crew members and one with the cast--tell you just about everything you would want to know about every aspect of the picture's production. If you're not satisfied, a featurette called "Obey the Lost Skeleton" provides additional details. We also get a trailer for the film, previews for schlock classics from the 1950s, a blooper reel, a cartoon, and a Q&A with the cast and crew filmed at the American Cinematheque a few years ago. Run, don't walk, to get a copy of this five star effort. If this movie is any indication, Blamire's next feature (also a satire) ought to be another classic. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars REAL B-movie made in the style of yesteryear.......2007-04-02

This is an INCREDIBLY amusing movie, made in the style of the mid-20th century when people would get a few actors, a couple cameras and go out into the desert and film a movie. Reminiscent of many of the best sci-fi B-movies, "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" is a nostalgic romp for those who love this type of movie. Do not miss it!

Robert Townsend has managed to build an entire career on the basis of one funny movie (The Hollywood Shuffle)--even though he hasn't had one that was anywhere near as funny since. Case in point: This would-be comedy about an unwilling black superhero. Townsend plays a schoolteacher in a bad Washington, D.C., neighborhood that is controlled by a vicious drug gang (recognizable by their blonde-dyed hair). Then he is hit by a meteor and suddenly finds that he has super strength and can fly (and can read the minds of dogs). But Townsend's writing is surprisingly weak and, despite a cast that includes a mugging Bill Cosby, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume, and sadly miscast James Earl Jones, this movie is never able to get off the ground. --Marshall Fine

    Description

Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle) leads an all-star cast including Marla Gibbs, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume, James Earl Jones and Bill Cosby in this laugh-out-loud, feel-good comic fantasy about a reluctant superhero on a crusade to save his neighborhood. And when a gang led by a powerful drug lord begins terrorizing his family and neighbors, Jefferson has no choice but to don his homemade spandex suitand take it on in a war of cunning, wit and super-powered, super-modeling prowess'to save his 'hood!

If it weren't for such a large array of a very talented all-star cast this movie would have no hope whatsoever. I do admit, as stupid Meteor Man was I actually enjoyed some parts of it very much.

Character development is a major crapfest in this movie. Our hero in my opinion takes way too long to figure out what he has to do and ends up dragging the movie because of it. The villains are major stupids in their entire 'coolness' splendor. What's the deal with the gold Slinky? Pretty much all the characters are pretty one-dimensional and simple minded. That's not to say the acting was the same way. As a matter of fact the acting was superb all things considered. With such big names like Rob Townsend, Bill Cosby, James Earl Jones, Sinbad, and whole mess of others I'm not surprised the acting came up aces. As a matter of fact that's probably the only thing that saved this movie.

Being a superhero movie the special effects are pretty standard for things like flying, laser eyes and of course a crashing meteor (that seems to home in on our hero). In other words the special effects are functional. The things to look for are a few scenes that do shine above all the crap in the rest of the movie. The final fight scene, by the way, is not one of them. For one it's painfully long. I was begging for the final scene to be over it was taking so long. Plus, like much of the writing, it ends up being very, very stupid.

If only a condensed version of this movie was made to squeeze out the lame parts and leave in the good stuff I can recommend it. As it stands you would have to sit through some dumb scenes to get to the good stuff. If you have nothing better to do then give The Meteor Man a chance. Just keep in mind it will be a waiting game here and there until you get to the truly fun scenes.

5 out of 5 stars A funny and sincere classic .......2006-01-15

Meteor Man is sort of a comedy but it teaches you lessons as well. This is a great movie to show to older kids. While trying to be funny it puts across messages that should be taken in and followed. Now maybe people hate the movie because of Robert Townsend's attempt of a wacky super hero or maybe it's just because they have no imagination and can't get on his level.
The story is original and deals with the problems on the streets and Townsend gave what everyone wanted in a neighborhood being harassed by crime, he gave them a super hero. There's a lot of funny scenes in this movie but it took on problems that needed to be dealt with and if Robert Townsend gets low ratings for Meteor Man then maybe nothing will ever change.

3 out of 5 stars Funny Cult Classic.......2006-01-15

I thought it was funny when I first saw it back in the 90's and I baught it two weeks ago. RT reminds me of Eddie Murphy in his role as Meteor Man. You have to be open to this kind of humor to enjoy it. The special effects are good as well. Worth a look.

This direct-to-video sequel (the second) to The Land Before Time suffers from less ambitious animation, but the story is superior to the last film. This time, a meteorite has cut off the water supply to the Great Valley, causing inhabitants to bicker and bully among themselves. By contrast, Littlefoot and his friends are getting along just fine, and they leave the valley to go in search of a new water source. Directed by Roy Allen Smith, who made the The Land Before Time II. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie and series for children of any age!!.......2006-09-13

The entire LBT series, and this movie in particular, deals with issues that all kids, parents and families are faced with on a daily basis (love, friendship, trust, just to name a few). The family issues include single parenting and adoption (both touch my family) and it is a great way for my son to learn that each family is different. In this particular movie, Littlefoot and his friends are dealing with "bullies" and it is a perfect chance for parents and children to discuss how to deal with other children who may not be as nice as they are. My son, who is almost 5, names all dinosaurs after the LBT characters, we have the CD playing in the car most of the time and he watches both of the Singa-a-Long tapes constantly. I know he learns something new each time he watches one of the movies because of the discussions we have. I cannot praise this series enough!!

2 out of 5 stars The Time of Great Confusion.......2006-01-23

I couldn't understand if they were speaking language or else not. Sometimes I lay awake at night and wonder if this is how those graceful creatures spoke to each other. Although this movie was a bit too artsy for me, I still thought it was pretty good even though I couldn't understand what they were saying. Overall, this is my third favorite Land Before Time movie, only the seventh and the ninth are much better. Littlefoot still rules the Jurassic Period.

1 out of 5 stars Kids will enjoy it, but might get the wrong message..........2005-10-10

I did not like this movie at all, and I have taken it out of our collection and put it in the trash. The only reason that I didn't like this movie is because of the bullies in it that pester Little Foot and his friends. It is negative, and have found my two year old son starting to act out some of the behaviours that the bullies do in this movie.
Get it if you wish, but I don't recommend it.

    3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good........2007-06-27

I like a good zombie movie. The ending was an interesting twist, honestly didn't see it coming. It does take a little while to get there, and it's a little confusing with the whole alien and zombie thing. It's a little slow at times, but overall i like it. Good for first-timers, and i look forward to their next one.

1 out of 5 stars They should have called it "DEAD".......2007-05-06

This movie was terrible. Whoever called this film a classic must be very easily entertained. What's with the people hanging in mid-air? What's with the rain? What's with the aliens? Where did the zombies come from? Why were the zombies still there after the aliens left?

This is a classic 'the editor should have been fired' film.

4 out of 5 stars Post structuralism meets Dawn of the Dead . . ........2007-04-05

I usually enjoy 'over-the-top' movies that play with a straight face(Think "Bruce Campbell"), and this is one of the better ones. It is a fun movie from people that obviously like the genre--they're not making fun OF it--but are having fun WITH it.

Definitely NOT predictable. I'm watching it a second time to sort out some of the twists. In addition, this is a case where not knowing the actors helps, because you have no idea who is going to survive. Well, you have some idea, but not entirely, and that adds to the fun.

The movies has the gore and the usual sort of thing one expects in the genre, but it is not creepy. When I watched it I thought of "Shawn of the Dead," in the sense that it is written/directed in a very similar spirit.

I'm glad I bought it and will probably watch it again every few years.

4 out of 5 stars This is fun.......2007-04-01

The actor Mongo whatever, is a trip to watch!! The gore is funny as hell! The shovel scene makes me cringe every time I see it. Also the cops or constables are funny as well with their shorts!. Not one to take serious. This is very much like Dead Alive among others but not as goofy.

    4 out of 5 stars Unconventional........2007-01-26

    Undead (The Speirig Brothers, 2003)

The last thing I was expecting from the surprisingly-heavily-promoted (and unsurprisingly-narrowly-released-in-America) Undead, based on the big, murky promo posters, was comedy. But that's exactly what I got. Better yet, we got a zombie flick that has pretensions of being a fifties sci-fi B movie-- imagine crossing Night of the Living Dead with The Day the Earth Stood Still with the script being written by Broken Lizard and you've got a good idea of where the Speirig Brothers are coming from here.

Rene (the stunning Felicity Mason, recently of Hollywood) is a small-town beauty queen who'll do anything to get out. She is, in fact, on the verge of doing just that when things go horribly, horribly wrong-- a meteor shower bombards the town, killing hundreds of people, all of whom rise as zombies and start attacking the other townspeople (as zombies, of course, are wont to do), turning them into zombies as well. Rene flees into the home of Marion (Inspector Gadget 2's Mungo McKay), a reclusive fisherman with a taste for weaponry. Other survivors congregate in the house, and the stage is set for a protracted siege between man and zombie. Except those aren't the only two species coming to the party...

The surprising thing about Undead is that it doesn't play its comedy straight, the way Slither or Return of the Living Dead do; there's always something slimy and uncomfortable just beneath the surface making you feel dirty as you're laughing at this. You know you're not supposed to be laughing at the stuff you're laughing at. If the Spierig Brothers, who are also responsible for the twisted, twisted script here, were attempting to simulate the unintentionally-hysterical factor of fifties B movies, they have succeeded in such a way that Undead may end up being remembered as one of the great satires of all time; a lot of movies have poked fun at the genre (and at themselves) by parodying that brand of humor, but few, if any, picked up on the ugliness that often lies beneath it. Here it is in spades.

The more I think about it, the better this movie was. You want to see this. ****
