William Friedkin's taut direction highlights The Hunted, a bloodsport thriller that works best without dialogue. It's a prime vehicle for costars Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro, whose rugged screen personas are perfectly matched in a manhunt between a military assassin and the man who trained him to kill. Traumatized by atrocities in Kosovo four years earlier (the site of an action-packed prologue), Hallam (Del Toro) is seemingly psychotic and now killing in the forests of Oregon; Bonham (Jones) is lured out of retirement by a tenacious FBI agent (Connie Nielsen) to end Hallam's murder spree. The hackneyed plot is derivative to a fault (no surprise from the screenwriters of Collateral Damage), and the whole movie's a foregone conclusion, but Friedkin inspires fine work from his well-trained stars while exploring the ambiguity of Hallam's character. Lushly photographed by Caleb Deschanel, The Hunted is a survivalist's dream, militarily authentic and most effective when its primal instincts are cinematically expressed. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Gory, Brutal Jones/Del Toro Film.......2007-04-12

The Hunted is one of those films that might not be defensible. It might no practical, ethical, moral reason to exist. Except, of course, that it is thrilling, involving, brutal, gory, and highly entertaining.

The Hunted involves a Special Forces assassin, played by Benicio Del Toro, who begins to kill people in the Oregon woods using his highly evolved knife fighting and tracking skills. The FBI calls a former Special Forces tracker/knife fighting trainer, played by Tommy Lee Jones to help find the assassin. He meets up with the assassin, and discovers that it's one of his old students.

From here, the movies involves into a classic cat-and-house game between the two men with the FBI in the middle. The knife fighting is realistic and intense. Yes, this film is full of machismo and violence. But it's also full of heavy-duty emotions connected to issues of service, guilt, and betrayal.

The Hunted is certainly not for everyone, but many will find it appealing and engrossing.

4 out of 5 stars 'First Blood', crossed with 'The Fugitive'.......2007-02-10

It's not hard to see how this movie got made.. a director known for gritty streetwise thrillers (The French Connection), about a soldier who was trained to kill, but now can't turn it off due to battle scarring (First Blood, anyone?), starring Tommy lee Jones reprising his role in the Fugitive, but with a twist..
Tommy Lee Jones is just the right casting for the role of the 'Tracker' - a man whose father was a soldier, but trained his son how to kill, and survive in the wilderness, be stealthy - in order that he would never have to kill. Now one of his proteges has gone rogue, and TLJ is brought out of retirement to track him down, meeting along the way the FBI agent played by Connie Nielsen.
The concept is a good one, if unoriginal. The idea of the tracker is fascinating, and as the extras on the DVD show, not without basis in fact - but the execution is a mixed bag.
On the plus side, the knife fighting scenes have a gritty fast moving realism to them that has rarely been seen. This is one of the movies big attractions. On the minus side, the movie feels like it has been chopped up, and pieces gone missing. Even the deleted scenes only give a hint to some of the directions the movie was going. There is a cynicism about Americas military here, similar to Friedkins last movie Rules of Engagement, but whatever message comes along with that has thinned out along the way. The roles the actors play do not leave the actors room to flesh out and inhabit their characters. Connie Nielsen does her best, which is pretty darn good, in a woefully underwritten role which seems in the end to serve little useful purpose.
On the whole though this is an edge of the seat chase movie, set in breathtaking, if chilly, scenery in Oregon and British Columbia, and should not disappoint. Just dont expect to remember much about it in a month or two.
3 and a half stars! I rounded up to 4 for the great fight choreagraphy..

5 out of 5 stars The perfect movie that makes guns useless........2007-01-21

This movie has the realistic arts of violence with knives (not guns). LT bonham (tommy lee jones) who is a military instructor who trained Aaron hallam (benicio del toro) very well to become a killing machine. after the war experience aaron goes through in kosovo aaron cannot seem to turn off his deadly technique skills of killing. Now aaron gets out of control the cops can't stop him & opening fire at him won't help at all it just ends up with more casualties of cops and the only one who can stop him is LT which becomes a deadly cat mouse game and a gruesom battle between a teacher and a student which was a really good fight. This movie deserves 5/5 stars for good actors and A good storyline too.

5 out of 5 stars Short, Intense, Fun To Watch.......2006-04-24

Three facts about this film help to make it highly-rated in my book: it's very entertaining, moves fast and lasts only 90 minutes.

So, if in the mood for a combination Fugitive/Rambo story with two very intense lead actors, this is a convenient diversion to play numerous times.

Tommy Lee Jones was the mentor who trained Benico Del Toro on the art of killing and now the ex-student has gone out of control and Jones must hunt him down, something the police can't seem to do. That's the story, simple as that. The only thing was a little implausible is that old man chasing down a kid for miles. Tommy Lee might be in shape, but he isn't young enough to do what he does here. However, both men are fun to watch and the action scenes are well done. You don't get bored watching this movie.

No, the film isn't high-grade mentality but it isn't totally stupid, either. It doesn't get carried and is pretty believable until the final chase scene. Along the way, we are treated the Portland cityscape and Northwest woods, both of which are nicely filmed and look great on this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty and Utterly Realistic Fights.......2005-11-28

"The Hunted" is a fantastically gritty, pulse-pounding chase film with refreshing realism, and is a fine return to form for the occasionally brilliant Friedkin, who has not been this on top of things since "To Live and Die in L.A." I will not here attempt to offer a synopsis of the film, as that has been done to death in this forum, but will instead offer some commentary.

First, those complaining that this film does not really have much of a plot, or that the plot of this film is confusing and messy, have entirely missed the point. William Friedkin was not here trying to make a story-driven film, at all. As for the second complaint, Friedkin has stated that he purposefully wanted much of the film to remain ambiguous. The viewer, for instance IS NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW whether the del Toro character is crazy or not. Those complaining that they can't figure out whether he's right in his suspicions or not have entirely missed the point of the film. Friedkin here was trying to develop an intense, gritty, extended, mano-y-mano conflict between two men who are clearly more dangerous than anyone else in their environment. Jones' character, fearing he's found himself in a Dr. Frankensteinian scenario, having created a monster only he can stop, feels both responsible to bring in del Toro and guilty for hunting a man he essentially feels fatherly towards. Jones' character could train del Toro's to kill, but, after having done so, he is unable (or unwilling) to help him psychologically. This is insufficient training, an insufficient initiation into manhood, resulting in the playing out of the Abraham/Isaac mythos. Unsophisticated viewers insisting on a "good guy"/"bad guy" take on the film will likely not enjoy this movie. Jones' character is not the "good guy" and del Toro's is not the "bad guy"; they are just both tormented men. Some viewers have interpreted Jones' character as the good guy, but just as many will see del Toro's character as a good guy being hunted down by his own government which he has just finished serving. This ambiguity of not having a clear cut "good guy" and "bad guy" is exactly what Friedkin was going for. Life is not black and white. In fact such Hollywoodian portrayals are naive and absurd.

Those complaining that Jones' character is unrealistic should watch the film with the commentary turned on, and learn about the real man that Jones' character is based on. Was it unrealistic that the two characters quickly fashioned knives out of raw materials in the wilderness? ...Not when the actors were trained to be able to do such themselves in real life.

What "The Hunted" has to offer the viewer is an absolutely enthralling action film harkening back to the grittier days of action movies (such as The French Connection or Bullitt). The main character is fascinating to watch. He's full of nervous energy that he is constantly shaking out. He can't stay still; he's twitchy. Something is clearly bothering him. He knows how utterly dangerous his adversary is, and feels responsible for teaching him the destructive maneuvers he knows. The army trains men to be cold-blooded killers. This changes some men. It's a door you can't walk back through. The army does not train them to reenter society. That's left to them, and not all of them can effectively pull it off. Benecio del Toro's character thinks the government is stalking him, spying on him. We don't know if this is true or if he's merely snapped. What we do know is that he is an extraordinarily dangerous man who is out on the loose.

Martial arts fans should take special note: this movie has the absolute best and most realistic hand-to-hand fight scenes this critic has ever scene (I say this having studied many martial arts in real life). The art on display is Kali knife fighting. Both Tommy Lee Jones and Benecio del Toro trained in the art and did the fighting in the film. It shows. (Allegedly Jones broke del Toro's wrist in one of their fights!) These are the most gritty and breathtaking fight scenes you'll ever see (the first of which I would pick as the best fight scene in film history). They are utterly realistic, and look very much the way a real martial arts fight looks (i.e. brutal and short). No nonsense wires or high-flying kicks here, just deadly street fighting.

The tracking scenes in this film are wonderful, relishing the details. The cinematography is downright breathtaking, and the soundtrack is one of the greatest and most effective in years. Friedkin makes the viewer feel that even after the antagonist is brought into the city that he's still in a wilderness...a wilderness of concrete blocks instead of trees and moss. Once the chase is on, it doesn't stop until the end of this wonderfully fun movie. Ignore the negative reviews and check this one out!

Christopher Lambert, the imposing French actor with the nasal whine best known to American audiences as Scottish swordsman Highlander, plays a rank amateur in The Hunted. He's an American businessman in Japan who lucks into a one-night stand with slinky Joan Chen and winds up a witness to her murder by a mysterious band of black-clad ninjas. Escaping not one but two attempts on his life by a little quick thinking and a lot of dumb luck, he winds up on a harrowing bullet train ride. As swarms of masked assassins decimate passengers in search of the elusive eyewitness, Lambert's laconic protector, rough-edged samurai Yoshio Harada, unleashes a martial arts frenzy of flashing swords in close quarters. His savior is not as altruistic as he seems, however. He just wants to lure mysterious ninja overlord John Lone out of hiding and into a fight to the death on Harada's island fortress, and Lambert is little more than live bait. Though it made few ripples at the box office, The Hunted is a slick and surprisingly smart thriller. Lone and Harada cut striking figures as the warriors following ancient codes in the modern world, and writer-director J.F. Lawton (screenwriter of Pretty Woman and Under Siege) gives them almost as much screen time as ostensible hero Lambert. The action scenes are furious and fast paced, lacking the grace and precision of real Japanese samurai adventures but full of clever flourishes. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars A "lost" film.......2007-01-27

The Hunted was the type of movie that briefly appeared in theaters and then quickly vanished. I didn't get to see it until it aired on HBO. This was a film that I regret not seeing on the big screen. After it aired on cable for a short time, it vanished again. Why do such great films often get "lost"? This film is a must-see for fans of the genre or fans of Christopher Lambert.

5 out of 5 stars Manhunt in Tokyo: Bloody sword-play!.......2007-01-27

After a night with a mysterious lady, New York businessman, Mr. Racine, found himself in the middle of a Tokyo under-world assassination. The assassin: none other than the fanatical Kinjo, leader of a radical cult of Ninja assassins. The trouble began when Mr. Racine saw Kinjo's face, and Kinjo's henchmen failed to kill Mr. Racine.
The hunt is on! Racine finds he is now the target of the assassin cult, but uses his wits to evade them until he is taken in by a modern Samurai, Takeda, who is equally fanatical about hunting Kinjo to settle a multi-generational feud. Takeda cares nothing about Racine, he is merely useful as a means to identify Kinjo. The chase through Tokyo climaxes in a savage and bloody assault on the Shinkansen commuter train, where Takeda and his wife dispatch the murderous cult-members in classic Samurai style!
Temporarily safe in Takeda's fortress, Racine befriends the clan swordsmith, Oshima, (played by a real-life famous Karate instructor, Tak Kubota) a clownish, heavy-drinking, but highly-skilled craftsman of weapons.
The final battle ensues, when Kinjo launches an all-out assault on Takeda's island fortress...and the the vendetta is settled by a duel.

Ignore the negative reviews. Its just an action-movie! Although it follows many common themes in a martial-arts film, this one is slightly different from the norm. Of course, real Ninjutsu and Bujutsu is far more interesting and complex than the stereotypes seen in most movies of this category. But again, its just an action-movie! I believe this is Christopher Lambert's best film since The Highlander!

4 out of 5 stars Not Great, But A Very Decent Film: Entertaining!.......2006-10-19

Now, I can understand some reviewers not liking this film. But this happens to be one of those guilty pleasures that I enjoyed immensely. Is it a classic samurai/ninja film? No. However, I found the cinematography to be outstanding, and although the plot is a little far-fetched, it was refreshingly fun. In fact, the entire film was fun. I like samurai films, and especially films from the far east [mainly Japan] And while I can understand purists looking for perfection to be disappointed, if you just sit back and enjoy the film, you will find it much better than many reviewers have stated. They are entitled to their opinion, and I respect that. Some have made very good and vaild points, and since I never give out negative marks on others, I understand and respect their complaints.

However, for me the film was an enjoyable film. I am not a fan of Christopher Lambert [This is the only one of his I own]. But, his portrayal was pretty good [not great]. The strong points of the film for me dealt with the antagonist portrayed by John Lone [head of the Ninja clan] and his nemesis Yoshio Harada [a somewhat protagonist: who also portrayed the sensei in the first Azumi film] When Lambert, and American businessman, witnesses the killing of a woman (Joan Chen) by John Lone, he barely survives the attack himself. Since he is the only one to ever see the face of this Ninja, they seek him out in order to kill him. What ensues is the clan of Harada tries to protect him. Or does Harada use him? There is a great scene of a ninja attack on a bullet train. The film is well worth the watch. Rent it first if you are not sure, I own it, and I am pleasantly happy with the film. Don't take it too seriously, it is a fun watch.

2 out of 5 stars Ninja Flick from the Writer of 'Pretty Woman' (I'm Not Kidding): Poor Actions And Laughable Story .......2006-07-23

Not to be confused with `The Hunted' (2003) directed by William Friedkin.

`The Hunted' (1995) stars French actor Christopher Lambert as Paul Racine, American businessman on trip to modern-day Nagoya, third-largest city of Japan, who happens to witness the killing of a woman by black-masked ninjas. The cult ninja group is actually led by a charismatic leader, Japanese named `Kinjo' who is played by a Chinese actor John Lone, and they begin to search Paul to kill. At the end of the film Paul, an ordinary businessman, proves to be an equal match when fighting against martial arts master Kinjo with a Japanese sword. If you can believe this ridiculous story, you can believe anything.

I can happily ignore all the cultural inaccuracy in films as long as they give me something entertaining, but unfortunately it was not the case with `The Hunted,' of which story slowly follows a beaten path of the genre to the unexciting climax. Moreover, to handle a Japanese sword you need certain kind of gracefulness, which Tom Cruise in `The Last Samurai' managed to acquire after many months' hard training. Lambert et al. show no such thing. He and other ninjas just use them fast and furious, but with no grace and consequently, impact at all. Instead the film substituted the grace of Japanese sword fighting for needless bloody violence, and its pinnacle is the pointless terrorism of the ninjas in the bullet train. This is an insult to Japanese culture, for a ninja could be a spy or an assassin, but he is never a terrorist who would kill innocent passengers.

But the most damaging is the way how the film treats women, who are there to be used for sex scenes. Watching Joan Chen in a Japanese bathtub with Christopher Lambert was something I never expected to see, and it surely represents the attitudes of some (if not all) Hollywood films towards women. And it is not surprising to see the film's director is J. F. Lawton, whose biggest hit is Julia Roberts' `Pretty Woman' (as a writer).

By some distributors (who must have been shocked to know the film's awful content after buying the right) really released this Universal film theatrically in Japan. Since then it has been a cult film for avid Japanese film fans, who take this film as sort of comedy. Really. In addition to the ridiculous casting and the laughable scene where Chris and Joan make love in Japanese bathtub that looks as if made 200 years ago, it has plenty of things that make us laugh - a sweet little girl in pachinko parlor, a kind of gambling place (What is she doing there?); a flight attendant-like female assassin in the bullet train (Come on, it's a train, not an airplane!), and the banging Japanese taiko (drum) concert in the garden of a Nagoya hotel (You just cannot sleep!). Even though this is an action flick, it needs some degree of plausibility, which it totally disregards. And there are poorly done actions, which is another reason that makes me regard `The Hunted' as the Universal Pictures have temporarily stepped into the Ed Wood's Grade-Z territory.

2 out of 5 stars Ok....but ............2006-02-15

I agree with R. Eastwood on mostly of what he says.

Despite that, I have to say that I enjoyed it, since this is one of the few western movies in the genre. Or at least with some decency.

It's a strange movie. It seems that it was written in a hurry, without a real plot purpose. What did it conveyed?

Mr. Lambert really shows his lack of minimun skills in martial arts (And I thought I had seen the worst with David Carradine!)

It's a movie without a main character. It is not Kijo, not Takeda, not even Racine.

I was expecting Takeda to be the real deal, the guy with knowledge and values, but in the end was the real bastard, even more than Kijo.

If we talk about performances, ufff.. Lambert doesn't make it at all, not even the guy who plays Takeda. Whoever, Kijo was excellent !

They introduce this swordsmith character, which is completely out of line. He's a drunkard, at the same time a teaser and an swordsman, who actually teaches Racine a few ninja moves (he knows some ninja style but he's the swordsmith of a samurai???....). The end is a very sad moment because all of these guys in the island die, even Takeda, and Kijo, BUT.....the drunkard comes in a samurai gear, ready for action, and Racine, as nothing had happened, give him a stupid/funny comment.....What was that??????????

On the positive side ....I have to say that the swords choreography wasn't that bad, the kendo fight was alright, and this guy John Long (Kijo) seems to have real knowledge of swordsmanship.

As a conscientious student of Kendo and Iaido, my real delight was the master piece The Last Samurai. One of my top three movies. From every angle, the movie really made it. The performances, the casting, the fight scenes, the narratives, dialogues, photograpies, costumes, the story, the depth of the characters .... so perfect and beautiful I can't believe it. A real gift for us practioners of the japanese sword.

Just like the movie says, bullets, bombs and babes!

5 out of 5 stars good old 90's action flicks.......2006-03-12

I'm giving the three combination of the movies in this disk 5 stars but for one movie that I'm going to be review is "Day of the Warrior", I rated it 4/10.

It was poor but funny. It has become a classic among me and my friends because it is so bad. There are moments when you can't help bursting out with awkward dialogue and gratuitous clothes changing. Elvis Fu is a virtual bevy of ethnic jokes.

The guy says Texas is so flat when your dog runs away you can see him for three days. He hasen't been to Winnsboro,Louisiana.

4 out of 5 stars Three Of Andy's Best Movies.......2006-03-05

DO OR DIE (1991). Pat Morita plays the international crime boss known as Kane. He hires six teams of assassins to kill federal agents Donna Hamilton (Playboy Playmate Dona Speir) and Nicole Justin (Playboy Playmate Roberta Vasquez). Playing against type, Pat makes for a very convincing villain. Also playing against character is the gorgeous Ava Cadell, who normally works on the side of the federal agents. In this film, she plays the hottest assassin of them all, who makes putting on her clothes sexier than most strippers taking off their clothes! Erik Estrada plays agent Richard Estaban in the finest acting performance of his career. Playboy Playmate Cynthia Brimhall plays agent Edy Stark, while the super sexy Carolyn Liu is Silk, Kane's lover and partner in crime. The majority of this movie involves the successive teams of killers, as they track the agents from Hawaii, to the desert outside of Las Vegas, to bayou country in Louisiana. The agents successfully thwart each team of assassins, leaving only Kane and Silk alive at the end of the film. This is my favorite Andy Sidaris movie.

HARD HUNTED (1992). Inexplicably, R.J. Moore (Roger Moore's son) has taken over the role of the international crime boss known as Kane. After smuggling a nuclear trigger from China, Kane offers it to a Middle Eastern leader. Before the sale is final, a female secret agent goes undercover and steals it away. Unfortunately, she's killed when giving it to her fellow agents. Then it's up to Donna Hamilton (Dona Speir), Nicole Justin (Roberta Vasquez), Edy Stark (Cynthia Brimhall), and Ava (Ava Cadell) to once again save the day. The action culminates with Kane on the verge of getting the nuclear trigger back, only to have it destroyed in an attempt to kill the L.E.T.H.A.L. (Legion to Ensure Total Harmony And Law) agents. When will these villains ever learn, business before pleasure!

DAY OF THE WARRIOR (1996). Professional wrestler Marcus 'Buff' Bagwell plays the criminal mastermind known as the Warrior. Really good at multitasking, the Warrior runs diamond smuggling, priceless art theft, and bootleg porno movie operations. Things really heat up when a mole cracks the L.E.T.H.A.L. computer database and steals the files that reveal the true identities and locations of the L.E.T.H.A.L. agents. Julie Strain, who previously played villains, plays L.E.T.H.A.L. agent Willow Black. In two of the film's funniest scenes, Willow's breasts really pack a punch! Cobra (Penthouse Pet Julie K. Smith), Tiger (Playboy Playmate Shae Marks), and Scorpion (B-movie babe Tammy Parks) discover the L.E.T.H.A.L. mole and help defeat the Warrior.

Unfortunately, the three discs come in a cheap case that normally only fits two discs. It's designed so that two discs fit on one side, one of top of the other. In addition, the case is so tight in the box it comes in, I almost ripped the box trying to get the case out of it. There's no detailed booklet for each movie, only an insert with each movie's name and the titles of the chapters. There's a very brief description of each movie on the back of the DVD box. I was expecting the release of "The Andy Sidaris Collection, Volume Two," with six movies in separate cases, to match the Volume One Collection. Taking all of that into consideration, I have to deduct one star from what would have been a five star review.

5 out of 5 stars Classic B Movies.......2006-02-04

If your looking for movies that feature "acting" or "good writing" or other similar highbrow features, these movies arent for you. IF, however, you enjoy those movies that come on late at night and dont take themselves too seriously, then these are for you.

They feature memorable lines you will find yourself repeating to your buddies for weeks. Beautiful woman, guns, completely pointless nudity, and explosions. If the movies were music videos - think 80's hair band. Excellent Excellent guy entertainment.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars boring!! .......2006-07-23

Benji runs and then runs some more- back and forth. Very Boring but the kids loved it. I remember Benji in the city being a little more exciting as a kid.

4 out of 5 stars Boring but cute.......2006-04-22

I checked out this movie at the library. It was okay but boring. All that happened was Benji ran into a bunch of animals and they chased him (sometimes alone and sometimes with his cougar babies). Then finally at the very end a cougar comes adoptes the cougar babies.
It was cute to see Benji's emotions because he reminded me of my own toy dog Teddy (a big fan of the first Benji movie). I would recommend this movie to dog lovers only. If I didn't love dogs as much as I do I probably would have been more inclined to flip the switch on this movie.

5 out of 5 stars So what if there is no features!.......2006-03-30

At least your owning the DVD with the movie on it which is a lot better than watching the crappy video because the DVD has better pic than what you got on video. This is one of my favorite disney movies and I would recommened to get this on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Benji movie.......2006-03-26

I have seen it about 3 times now and still enjoyed it. Main theme of the movie is about humanity and survival. Benji had many chances to be rescued with his owner, but he had a good sense with task at hand first to bring the orphaned cubs to their "adopted" mother and putting his rescue with his owner on hold. The most impressive part on Benji's part is his courage to overcome the obstacle uphill the cliff bringing the cubs to their "adopted" mother. I loved every minute of it. This is a family movie and good for everyone of any age.

For people who wants to know if this DVD has caption or subtitle. It does have caption. The DVD cover doesn't show caption symbol on it, but the DVD itself does. I know Amazon.com listed it closed-captioned. But, they don't always list the info. correctly as it happened to me in the past. So, I double-checked the Disney website and they show the menu demo that this movie has caption before I decided to buy the DVD. If you have TV with caption on, then you can leave subtitle from menu off, otherwise, caption and subtitle will show up at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth About What Is On Benji the Hunted DVD.......2005-12-18

On January 17 all dog fans should be exited about a movie coming to DVD staring Benji, Mike Francis, Nancy Francis, Frank Inn and Red Steagall. Benji the Hunted is about a dog named Benji who is world's most popular canine actor and he is staring in a film with a dog that adopts little orphan cougar cubs. They run away from a man and a beast to avoid being eaten. There are no bonus features. The rating is G. The run time is an hour and twenty-nine minutes. The aspect ration is 1.33:1 fit for 4x3 TV screens. The sound is Dolby Digital 5.1. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Euro-horror.......2004-03-05

I desperately wanted to try one of these euro-horror films that are so highly regarded by many, so I decided to splurge and buy this set rather than just one or two of them(which cost a lot more individually than in this 3-pack). Trying to find reviews for these films were very difficult so I thought I'd try to help those out that are curious about these films too. All films are english subtitled, supposedly uncut, and in their original theatrical aspect ratios. So here we go:

Living Dead Girl--i've read this is considered Jean Rollin's best film. I can't vouch for that, but it is pretty good. Some girl comes back to life after a chemical accident and needs blood to stay 'alive' which her best friend provides for her. It has decent performances and decent pacing(it was kinda slow, but i didn't get really bored at any point), but it wasn't very scary or erotic(no major sex/love scene, the lesbian relationship is only hinted at). It is rather bloody but not really too gory. (trailer, filmography, mini-gallery)

Reincarnation of Isabel--Poorly made film about some girl being killed because she was accused of being a witch. She comes back later to seek vengeance on those that killed her(i think, it's slightly confusing). Anyway, there is a decent sleaze factor in this one, but again, no major sex scene(more like a few major 'tease' scenes). Also has very little atmosphere, no real scares or blood, gore, etc. In fact, if it weren't for the sleaze factor, this would be kinda hard to sit through(would make for a good MST3K episode though). (no extras worth mentioning)

Night of the Hunted--atmospherically surreal Jean Rollin film. Plot has something to do with some 'patients' in a high rise losing their memory due to some 'illness' and two of the girls trying to escape. I've read reviews complaining it's too confusing and extremely cheap looking. The sets are sparse, but it adds to the surreal nature of the proceedings(besides, who's to say these rooms don't naturally look this way). As for the confusion, it's not really confusing at all mainly because one character in the film explans almost everything at the end of the movie(if it's still confusing...it's because of the holes in the script). The film is not really scary, bloody(ok,one scene), or gory; disturbing, intriguing, and weird are more appropriate. As for the sex, there's an extended love scene, a rape scene, and a brief sex-turns-deadly scene. The extras say there is a trailer(there is), and two "strong, previously unseen sex scenes". These two must've been incorporated into the film, cause i saw no option to view them separately on the menu screen.

Overall, Living Dead Girl is arguably the best made of the 3 and can be considered a horror movie. Reincarnation of Isabel is arguably the poorest made but yet has the highest sleaze factor and falls under the witchcraft genre. But my personal favorite would have to be the sci-fi-ish, surreal nightmare Night of the Hunted(though none of these 3 could actually be considered zombie films, at least, in the Romero-sense anyway). As a package, it costs a lot less to buy than buying them individually. However, I really can't strongly recommend a purchase of any one of these titles. But if you are a fan of these types of films, it's still worth a late night rental for some cheap thrills. To be honest, I'm glad i saw them, but i'm not exactly glad i paid for all three of them(perhaps more extras would have helped...that or better films!). Btw, I'm not completely ignorant of this genre as i've seen Vampyres(check that one out), Daughters of Darkness, The Beast, Immoral Tales, and a few too many Jess Franco films by way of comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Hear Your Heart Go Thumpety Thump.......2005-08-21

It is said that life is the sum of one's decisions, and Lainie Wheeler made a lot of bad ones. After a failed marriage, she started using drugs, and her 2 children were placed in foster care. After work one rainy night, she takes a wrong turn while looking for a short-cut, and makes the worst choice of her life. The film starts as the police chase her car down to arrest her, and then retraces the previous 3 months that led to that moment. "A Woman Hunted" has some heart-stopping moments, and is well written and directed by Morrie Ruvinsky, with a taut script, good pacing, a great deal of plausibility, and a marvelous, unexpected resolution. Perhaps this could be labeled a "woman's movie," but it is easy to empathize with Lainie, and understand her plight.

Alexandra Paul gives a stupendous performance as Lainie, a woman who kills the man who rapes her. With a police record behind her, and fresh out of rehab, she does not think anyone will believe her story, and in her torment states "I just thought I could make everything un-happen." Others in the cast that are standouts are the 2 detectives, Linden Ashby (Det. Webster) and Dean Hagopian (Det. Fulton), and Jonathan Higgins as Harry Brewer, the baseball star with a predatory dark side. This is excellent made-for-TV entertainment, above average in quality, and for making the most of its low budget production, deserves 5 stars. I would rather see a small unpretentious film that tries hard and succeeds, than some of the multi-million $ rubbish that has been theatrically released in recent years. Total running time is 94 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Queen Alexandra .......2004-10-23

This is an excellent thriller, it holds your interest from start to finish and that's pretty rare in TV movies these days. It's in a whole different league than most other (predictable) Pierre David-produced thrillers, in fact, it's better than most recent theatrical thrillers. Several edge-of-your-seat scenes. It stars Alexandra Paul in what I consider to be her best performance to date, an accomplished actress who has clearly come into her own. Best known for that awful nonsense known as "Baywatch", Miss Paul actually is a very good actress indeed and it only takes one look at this movie to see that. And I like that in real life she's a vegetarian, as I am. (She may be a Kerry supporter, but I won't hold that against her.)-;) I've always enjoyed her movies, and you wouldn't think this is the same actress who appeared in so-so thrillers like "Piranhas" or "Fallen Angel" - but it is, that's how different and good she is here. The surprise ending for once really was a surprise and had me go "what ?", I never saw it coming. Do yourself a favor, check this one out. By the way, it's out in widescreen on R2 whereas this R1 release is full frame.

Euro-horror cult director Jean Rollin dives into science fiction with an ultra-low-budget picture that resembles nothing less than Sam Fuller's Shock Corridor by way of David Cronenberg. Though it starts out in classic horror fantasy fashion, with a beautiful young woman (Rollin regular Brigitte Lahaie) in a flimsy nightgown rushing breathlessly though a dark forest, the imagery quickly changes tone when she is returned to the mysterious, antiseptic skyscraper asylum known as "Black Tower." Blank-eyed inmates with dissipated memories wander through the featureless white hallways and empty rooms, helpfully making up stories for one another to stand in for their lost pasts. Like in most of Rollin's films, the story is more fascinating before the exposition and explanations, when the ambiguous conspiracies and the stark landscapes create an unsettling, alienated world out of time and place. The wooden acting is transformed into an asset, a dazed cast of shuffling living zombies somewhere between shock and stupor slowly losing their minds. In true Rollin fashion, he takes time out for gratuitous sex scenes and nudity and weaves a disconnected series of gory murders into a story that never really makes sense in the first place, but the ethereal, poetic imagery creates an enigmatic psychodrama more concerned with mood and texture than narrative. The new Redemption release restores two scenes cut by the producers for its theatrical release. The DVD features the theatrical trailer and a gallery of production stills. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Stylish, futuristically surreal and a departure from director Jean Rollin's familiar vampire territory, "The Night of the Hunted" features a mass of people suffering with insanity and collective amnesia. Bizarre, even by Rollin's standards, it still displays fairy tale qualities mixed with extremes of sadism, sex and violence. Restored from the original negative.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as Rollins' other works.......2006-05-28

At first, "The Night of The Hunted" seems to be nothing more than an excuse for a lot of skin and sex scenes; however, the film progresses to be truly eerie and unsettling in some instances, with a rather bittersweet, plaintative, and thoughtful ending.

As usual, there is prototypical cast of Rollin characters, with the talented Lahaie playing the protagonist very well. My only complaint is the inclusion of the female "patient" who becomes too quickly attached to Lahaie, as these types of leechlike women feature prominently in Rollins' films and often seem an unnecessary inclusion. Well, I don't want to give the plot away, but I would only recommend this film is you are a Rollin completist. Those who don't like "weird" or offbeat films are surely to dislike this one. To those who have never viewed a Rollin film, start with "Fascination."

2 out of 5 stars Fun, but silly........2006-03-13

Night of the Hunted (Jean Rollin,1980)

So I've had my first Jean Rollin experience. I have been told by a number of people that it's nowhere near his best film. I hope not, but I have to say, I didn't hate it that much; there's just not much to wrap one's head around here, so it comes out more like gory softcore than horror, thriller, or mystery. Rollin did, however, get the softcore aspect of it right.

Robert (Once Upon an Angel's Alain Duclos) is driving home one night when he spies a young woman, clad only in a nightgown, running alongside a dark road. She turns out to be Elysabeth (the stunning Brigitte Lahaie, probably best known in America for Henry and June). He takes her back to his apartment in Paris, and finds that she has no memory. He goes off to work, and just after he leaves, Elysabeth is taken off to a place called the Black Tower by Dr. Francis (Bernard Papineau of This Beast Must Die). Much of the rest of the movie deals with Elysabeth's stay in the tower, though Robert does put in a cameo towards the end of the film.

There is a decent amount of simulated sex, though the video box's boast that the movie features "two strong sex scenes presented here for the first time" makes me shudder to think how tame the movie must have been when it was released; there are, in fact, only three sex scenes that could be characterized as middling, much less strong. There is also a decent amount of violence. There is nothing at all else to recommend this film. One expects bad acting in a B movie, but this is atrocious. Lahaie manages a good line now and then, as does the even more beautiful Dominique Journet (later seen in La Traviata), but most of their performances are predictably wooden. Papineau plays like a stereotype of the evil doctor thinking he's doing God's work, but one in the middle of an asthma attack. The rest of the patients are such woodenly stereoptypical crazies that they make the infected folks in Cronenberg's Shivers look like complex, well-drawn characters.

Still, if all you're looking for is sex and inventive ways to kill people-- which is, really, what exploitation flicks are all about-- Night of the Hunted is an amusing little side journey. If you want substance, however, reach for a Dario Argento movie. **

4 out of 5 stars A poem of the pulp imagination.......2005-12-12

Set in the near future and taking place in an eerily desolate Paris, Night of the Hunted centers on Elisabeth (hauntingly played by Brigitte Lahaie), a young woman who is suffering from a bizarre form of amnesia; she can only remember the present and once an experience ends, it leaves her mind as well. As she herself explains it early on, Elisabeth is doomed to live eternally in the moment. However, she is not alone in her affliction. She lives in a "Black Tower" with several others also cursed to live continually in the moment. Though she is supposedly under the treatment of a coldly impersonal Doctor and his sinister aide, Solange, Elisabeth is really more of a prisoner than a patient. When Elisabeth finally manages to escape the tower, she is picked up by a young man named Robert and promptly forgets just where and from what she escaped. After spending the night with Robert, she is recaptured by the doctor and Solange and taken back to the tower. She promptly forgets Robert as well but Robert doesn't forget her and his attempts to find and rescue her eventually lead the film to its truly tragic conclusion.

This deceptively low-key French film has been unjustly maligned by many critics over the years and, indeed, it is a flawed film. With the exception of Lahaie, the acting is uniformly wooden and the film's low budget is, at times, painfully apparent. However, underneath its undeniably crude and, at times, rather sleazy surface, Night of the Hunted boasts a wealth of treasure for the discriminating filmgoer. As directed by the great (if undeniably idiosyncratic) French filmmaker Jean Rollin, Night of the Hunted is a haunting meditation on the importance of memory and the horrors of living with no individual identity. In the scenes in which Elisabeth and her fellow patients/prisoners struggle to comprehend the few fragments of their past that they have left and basically create new fictional memories to replace the reality that they have left, Rollin manages to achieve a truly graceful sense of melancholy poignance. Those that have criticized this film for its occasionally graphic violence and sex tend to ignore the fact that, as opposed to other more acclaimed mainstream films, every one of those scenes can be seen as a logical result of the story Rollin weaves. It is proof of Rollin's talent that he takes scenes that could have easily been laughable and kitschy in the hands of other directors and manages to make them actually quite affecting. Indeed, the film's final sequence is probably one of the most truly sad (though not necessarily depressing) to have ever been captured on film and both the sequence and everything that it implies stays with the viewer long after the film has ended. Night of the Hunted stands as strong evidence that Jean Rollin is truly a poet of the pulp imagination. It is an underrated, uncommon film; one designed to be appreciated by the uncommon viewer.

5 out of 5 stars another great rollin masterpiece.......2003-09-16

if you're looking for something strange that will hold your attention & keep you glued to the screen until the living end, you just might be ready for night of the hunted. rollin's great masterpiece will leave you shaking your head in disbelief but never fails to amaze & excite. those of you gore hounds who just seek out some blood & guts, you will probably find more with his endeavor living dead girl. there is some blood here but the atmosphere is what will grab you & shake you. in the chilling tradition of eyes wide shut or memento, rollin gives you the full effect of paranoia & loss of memory. the film does make sense contrary to what many have wrote here but you have to view this film carefully & look for the hints. in the end, night of the hunted reveals it's dark secrets & the ending is sure to burn it's way into your thoughts for a long time. although we find no vampires here, it's evident that rollin is a serious director & treats his subject matter here with greatest of care. this film will not appeal to folks who tend to avoid pyschological horror or explicit sex. as with most rollin films, night of the hunted isn't intended for all audiences. the film start out with a young girl in a flimsy gown walking in the woods & then a flash of carlights stops her dead in her tracks. the guy naturally picks the girl up & offers to take her home but she can't remember who she is or where home is. in the next scenes, we see she's been taken back to this mysterious tower by a strange man & woman where it seems everyone has lost their mind or they are in the process of losing their minds. here we find a sad building of people struggling to make sense out of the world they are living in or their confusing lives. to provide comfort or security to one another, they invent stories to take the place of non-existent memories. eventually, our lead character tries to escape again & then things really start to get tangled. great rollin film that has nothing to do with the creatures of the night or the immortals.

5 out of 5 stars Static psychological horror........2001-11-10

This excellent film deviates from Rollin's vampire obsession in favour of a "parnanoid" tale of urban horror. There isn't much action, but the plot is unnerving.

At times, it seems like Rollin is doing a fine imitation of the early Cronenberg (RABID and SHIVERS come to mind).

As with other REDEMPTION DVD's, this lacks any interesting extras. But again, as with all the Rollin films in this series, the print is of the best quality.

A quirky film that should not be missed.

Description

Their music is made at the point where cool precision, passion and mechanical frenzy intersect. They synthesize elements of gothic, industrial, edgy electronica, darkwave, ethereal pop, modern rock, and trip-hop into a style that is uniquely theirs, soothing yet powerful, smooth yet dangerous. They are Collide: a Los Angeles duo with a knack for intriguing arrangements and compelling performances. Principals Statik and kaRIN, have over their decade together written some of the catchiest songs that will ever haunt you to distraction. Although Collide has won thousands of appreciators, and established a reputation for recording excellence, they'd never performed their music in concert until 2004. Like many electronic acts, Collide was a studio entity. They'd used their machinery, their voices, and their mixing board to generate a sound that's best described as extra-personal: suggestive not of a band playing in the back of a room, but of a dream playing in the back of your head. Transposing an experience this hallucinatory to the stage felt daunting to Statik and kaRIN. Could a group so dependent on electronics for their ferocity "even one this accomplished" manage to replicate the passion, the menace, and the magic of their music live? This DVD is proof that they can. Like The Hunted is documentation of the concert tour that brought Collide's dreams alive. Expanded to a six-piece, the live iteration of the electronica powerhouse brings new dimensions to familiar songs. Guitarists Scott Landes and Rogerio Silva weave alternately processed and raw riffs around Kai Kurosawa's percussive bass and Chaz Pease's thunderous d
