Three years after Lawrence of Arabia, the largely impressive Lord Jim (1965) finds Peter O'Toole again essaying a self-doubting but remarkable, white Englishman who leads a foreign people against their oppressor. Based on the Joseph Conrad novel, Lord Jim is the story of a British maritime officer, Jim (O'Toole), who takes a brief post on a tramp steamer and flees in terror during a storm at sea. Dogged by a reputation for cowardice, Jim attempts to reinvent himself in his own eyes, commanding an attack against a feudal warlord (Eli Wallach) in a distant, Southeast Asian village and basking in god-like glory afterward. A sinister plot by a gentleman pirate (James Mason) sets the stage for Jim's confrontation with his true destiny. Simplified and adapted by writer-director Richard Brooks (In Cold Blood), Lord Jim sometimes feels rushed and obvious, but O'Toole's golden performance and legendary cinematographer Freddie Young's 70mm footage are outstanding. --Tom Keogh

Gangs of New York may achieve greatness with the passage of time. Mixed reviews were inevitable for a production this grand (and this troubled behind the scenes), but it's as distinguished as any of director Martin Scorsese's more celebrated New York stories. From its astonishing 1846 prologue to the city's infernal draft riots of 1863, the film aspires to erase the decorum of textbooks and chronicle 19th-century New York as a cauldron of street warfare. The hostility is embodied in a tale of primal vengeance between Irish American son Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his father's ruthless killer and "Nativist" gang leader Bill "the Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis, brutally inspired), so named for his lethal talent with knives. Vallon's vengeance is only marginally compelling; DiCaprio is arguably miscast, and Cameron Diaz (as Vallon's pickpocket lover) is adrift in a film with little use for women. Despite these weaknesses, Scorsese's mastery blossoms in his expert melding of personal and political trajectories; this is American history written in blood, unflinching, authentic, and utterly spectacular. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Gangs of Sound Stage 6 .......2007-06-25

I agree with those reviewers who've seen through this movie. Under the period costumes and the periodic bursts of graphic violence, "Gangs of New York" is a set-bound bore. Bad dialogue, worse accents, and a cliched, spaghetti-Western plot. But, Gogol, if you're going to diss "Once Upon a TIme in America," as innovative a gangster movie as "The Godfather," at least blame the guy who did make it -- Sergio Leone -- not a guy who didn't -- Scorsese.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Entertainment.......2007-06-07

I was surprised by how enjoyable this movie is. It's just fun and if you're looking for a history lesson from a Hollywood movie, then you obviously know nothing about the American entertainment industry. Read a book. I held off watching this for a long time because I'm not terribly fond of Day-Lewis or DiCaprio. Also, I was wary of watching Cameron Diaz try to act. Finally, the movie bombed at the box office to a chorus of boos and some scathing reviews. Admittedly, this isn't Scorsese's best. The movie is too long, the script is a mess as it sags in spots and jumps around in others and DiCaprio is dubiously cast but he performs well enough. Diaz can't act but she is easy on the eyes. The dialogue lacks the resonance of better epics. In the end, Gangs is just a typical period piece revenge story with the emphasis on costumes, mayhem, and cheerfully swaggering overacted performances. Sort of Braveheart and Gladiator go to NYC in the mid 1800's.

1 out of 5 stars Yawn!.......2007-04-23

Has nobody seen through Scorseses weak plots yet? He makes one exellent gangster film (Goodfellas which after all was based on a book) then repeats the same formula for almost every other film. So we have the Italian mafia in Goodfellas, the Jewish mafia in Once upon a time, back to the Italians but change location for Casino and now we have the Irish and 'native' mafia. So what next for Scorsese when he runs out of ethnic groups for his mafia films?

This film lacks everything. Loosely based on historical facts its slow, dull and only made vaguely interesting by the odd input of horrific violence (just as all of his gangster films are, the start of Goodfellas, the baseball bat scene in Casino etc)

Sorry but this film lacks everything.

2 out of 5 stars Overblown melodrama.......2007-02-17

When this film came out, I knew it was going to be in deep trouble because of the hype connected to it and director Martin Scorsese's almost endless appearances on the talk show circuit.
The problem isn't in the sets or costuming, both of which are excellent, but rather lies mainly in the almost incoherent, plotless script the actors were saddled with. Historically about as accurate as a Ritz Brothers film, it confabulates various New York events and characters into a hopeless mishmash of misbegotten melodrama.
Special notice should be taken of Daniel Day-Lewis' scenery-chewing performance, which was uniformly terrible. Perhaps I being a bit harsh considering the odiousness of the script, yet the other actors at least managed to rise above the high school play level that marked Day-Lewis' effort.
As to this 2 DVD set, it annoyed me that I had to change DVDs to see the entire film.
The extras included contain all the frenzied hype that surrounded the pre-release of the film and are enjoyable, if you like that sort of thing.
The quality of the digital transfer to DVD was excellent.
Someday there will be a great movie about this turbulent era in New York City but this, unfortunately, isn't it.

4 out of 5 stars looking for capoeira? this is the movie.......2007-05-30

Amongst the thousands of martial arts films in circulation, it is near impossible to find one that focuses on Capoeira fighting. And among a few films that contain tournaments, such as the Bloodsport series, you can find a Capoeira fighter in the tournament. But if you are looking for a fighting style used throughout an entire film, Only The Strong is the only movie I know of.

In addition to a Capoeira treat, the movie stars Marc Dacascos, a fan favorite by many who has been in several notable films such as Drive, Cradle 2 The Grave, and American Samurai. Though not a true Capoeira fighter, Dacascos did a pretty good job of learning it for this film. Though the fights look unrealistic because of all the flash of the moves, nevertheless it is beautiful choreography that is quite original and never gets old. This is why we watch movies after all, to see fantasy fights that look sweet.

As for the story, though somewhat cheesy, I thought it too was quite original. The Mark Dacascos character returns to his old high school in Miami, Florida and begins a program to teach the absolute worst kids there the art of Capoeira. Unfortunately, one of the student's cousins, Silverio (played by Paco Christian Prieto - Street Law, Champions), tries to put an end to it, leading up to a big confrontation and fight between Dacascos and Prieto. I loved the fight scene. It lasted 4 minutes, about average length, and took place on a sgement of Miami beach at night. The choreography for this fight was amazing to watch.
You might even like the soundtrack for this film, which incorporates a lot of rhythm and beat for the fighting. Songs like "Bananawe" may stick in your head for hours and hours after watching.
I highly recommend Only The Strong if you want to see a lot of Capoeira fighting, or just something different in a martial arts movie. I also recommend Tony Jaa's newest movie "The Protector" if you want to see a really flashly fight involving Capoeira.

5 out of 5 stars Martial arts to a dance.......2007-05-15

I love this Brazilain technique looks imposible. this is one of my all time favourite movie. good thing is it actually has a story line to it, it doesn't go straight to fighting. As a kid going to a bad schooll with a bad attitude a teacher straightens him out then ships off to the navy in brazil were he learns the deadily art of capoeira.

3 out of 5 stars If you like Capoeira you have seen this already.......2007-01-03

So only the strong is not a great movie. Poor acting, formulaic plot, cheesy....everything but it is one of the only movies in the U.S. that has a lot of Capoeira. As a capoeirista myself I found the actual demonstration of the art to be very limited and the writers understanding of the art to be somewhat lacking. Mark Dacascos is not a Capoeirista but trained in a style of kung fu, explaining why his skill in Capoeira is less than desireable but his basic fighting knowledge pretty good. He trained for six months in capoeira for this movie which is not enought to really get any good. In response to one of the other posts, Capoeira is Brazilian. It is based on an African fighting style but does not currently , nor has it since the slaves modified it so much, resembled the lost African art it originated from. OTS is a campy movie that has a lot of flaws to it.

All that being said I have to say that I really liked. Admittedly it has so many things wrong with it that I could not list them all here but I didn't care when watching it. It is fun, and easy to get into. As a capoeirista I felt that they showed a good effort in displaying all the art in many parts, even if the writers really didn't understand on a higher level what it is about. The movie was memorable and entertaining. I recomend watching it but I just can't give it more than three stars because of huge cheese factor. If you like movies such as the last dragon you will like this. If you haven't seen TLD then buy them both, get a few friends together and watch them both. Great fun and a lot of memorable, cheesy quotes that will last you a lifetime.

3 out of 5 stars gREAT SHOWCASE FOR mARK DACASCAS, don't expect that good of a movie.......2006-03-07

This is oen of your favorite movies from back when you were 10, you probably remember it. Most of the characters seemed like they are dubbed even though this is an American movie. No real great fight scenes, but if you are one of those people who like Jet Li's the Master, then you will probably like this.

4 out of 5 stars A strong movie.......2006-02-01

Mark Darascos is a great martial-artist and "Only the Strong" is where he shines. This film is an under-rated flick that is a must own for any fan of martial-art movies.

The Thief Lord is a blend of Dickensian adventure and Harry Potter magic, an exciting adaptation of a popular novel by Cornelia Funke. A pair of orphaned and separated brothers, Prosper (Aaron Johnson) and Bo (Jasper Harris), escape their dreary homes in England and flee to Venice, Italy. On their first, frightening night there, they find sanctuary with the Thief Lord (Rollo Weeks), a masked, 16-year-old boy who gives them, along with a gaggle of other orphans, shelter in a shuttered movie theater. Living on the spoils of the Thief Lord's nightly raids of the rich, the kids become a happy, self-sufficient family that only has to stay out of the clutches of police and a nosy private detective (Jim Carter). But things change when a strange, elderly pair ask the kids to steal a strange object--a hunk of wood carved into the shape of a wing--for a lot of cash. What follows is completely unexpected, wildly imaginative, mysterious, and a lot of fun. The story has a way of sticking with one long after the film is over. With a cameo by Vanessa Redgrave, and loads of gorgeous exteriors of sunny Venice. Directed by Richard Claus, producer of The Little Vampire. --Tom Keogh

The thief lord is a realy good adventure/family movie. i read the book and since then i'd been begging my mum to get the Thief Lord on DVD. then when i saw it in the library i thought. well now this is cool i can take it out whenever i want. so i took it out todays ago and since then ive watched it twice. I really enjoyed it and i have to say that Aaron Johnson and Rollo Weeks are well hot and i'd really like to meet them and ask them some questions about the movie. the way Prosper and Bo seemed to hav a connection that was really special and the way scipio was actually a very rich boy but hung out with the orphans and thieves. I really enjoyed it and if i could actually just meet Aaron Johnson or Rollo Weeks i'd be really excited. im just about 12 and i wont be able to write here much longer so kids listen here. the theif lords a good 'un and u better watch it!

2 out of 5 stars Why Watch a Movie About a Rich Kid Thief?.......2007-02-26

Why this movie is an award winner I don't know, and can't imagine. Its production quality is first rate, but the values in it are horrible from a traditional values point of view. The Thief Lord is a son of a wealthy family that steals. In a way, he is a fifteen year old Robin Hood. It isn't made clear what he does with the money, except that he seems to support a bunch or orphans and runaway kids. There is a bit of fantasy in the story as a magical merry-go-around turns kids into adults and adults into kids. If parents show this movie to their kids, there is much to discuss. I sometimes say that nobody is completely useless; they can always be used as a bad example. I'd say the same about this movie - it isn't completely useless, parents can point out all these kids are doing wrong or immorally. However, there are so many great movies with good traditional values that it seems pointless to waste time on one such as this. There are even a few swear words in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars The theif Lord.......2007-01-24

The novel The Thief Lord was my favorite book. The setting of this book is Venice, Italy. The main characters are Scipio, Prosper, Bo, and Hornet. Prosper and Bo ran away from their home to Italy. In Italy they meet new friends. To find out more you will have to read the book.

David Mamet's Heist is--not unlike many of his previous films--amusing, manicured, and fraught with an awkward tension. If you've seen The Spanish Prisoner or House of Games, you're by now familiar with the plot-subverting gambit of the double-cross turned triple- and then quadruple-cross. Heist sticks to the formula. Likewise, the quips and laconic wit that adorn what can most accurately be called "Mametspeak" are again on display: "Cute as a pail full of kittens," for instance, and "Everybody needs money; that's why they call it money." What you haven't yet seen in a Mamet film is the magisterial charm of Gene Hackman. In the role of Joe Moore, an aging criminal out for one final score before cashing in, Hackman shows us all (Mamet included) how it's done, embodying tough-but-clever effortlessly. Delroy Lindo, as Joe's partner Bobby, picks up on Hackman's ultra-cool and gives plenty in return. While the script and the remaining cast (Danny Devito, Rebecca Pidgeon, Sam Rockwell) are serviceable, Heist is entirely Hackman's show to steal. --Fionn Meade

Description

Gene Hackman plays the veteran ringleader of a gang of theives (Delroy Lindo, Ricky Jay and Rebecca Pigeon as Hackman's youngish wife) that pulls off complex heists for a despicable fence (Danny DeVito). After stiffing the gang on a jewelry robbery, DeVito forces the gang to go after a Swiss gold shipment and to use his son (Sam Rockwell) in the crime. Mistrust runs rampant as double-crosses threaten the split-second operation.

5 out of 5 stars Gene Hackman at his best in a.......2007-01-11

taught, clever and never dull thriller about a series of robberies staged brilliantly by David Mamet. Aces all the way. Hang on till the last 10 seconds or you won't understand the entire film. Who's good, who's bad and who's on who's side?

4 out of 5 stars If you are a smart thief don't ever overawe or overlook another one!.......2006-04-03

David Mamet is a winner scriptwriter He has always those hidden aces bellow the sleeve to surprise us with his enigmatic twists and turns.
In this opportunity, two hard to die and smart thieves will confront themselves in the elusive sands of the smartness and perspicacious. Each one is looking for something and this intriguing cat and mouse clash will lead us to a a puzzle game of double crossing, betrayal and well known of the thriller, but so finely articulated and meticulously well made that will become an increasing tension war between two outlaws.

All the cast worked out toweringly. Since its immediate release has deservedly won a cult movie status.

Watch it without hesitation.

5 out of 5 stars Love of Gold...and Gene Hackman in Heist!.......2006-03-12

Heist great Movie. If you enjoy Danny Devito and Gene Hackman there is no doubt in my mind that you will enjoy watching Heist, a con movie about a gold heist big enough to retire the crew for life. There twists and side plots that will keep you completely engulfed in this movie. If you liked con (heist) movies like "Ocean's 11" or the more recent release "Criminal"( <---Another Good One), this is a must buy/rent.

2 out of 5 stars One double cross too many..........2005-07-08

Mamet does not write reality in my opinion. You hear some of the quotes and you tend to think: "Who talks like that?"

However, it is intriguing to hear it come from this ensemble cast. With an inferior cast (like the one in Spanish Prisoner, which I still liked the first time I saw it) it would have been wasted, but the three leads (Gene Hackman, Delroy Lindo and Danny DeVito) give it a crisp take that I found to be refreshing (even if the script was contrived).

Joe Moore is an old master thief who thought he did his last job (I guess he doesn't realize the "rule" that a last job for a thief usually involves killing your boss in a double cross), but is lured into another one by Mobster Bergman. He has a crew, including long term partners Bobby Blane (Delroy Lindo), Pinky (Ricky Jay) and wife Fran (Rebbecca Pidgeon). Their job this time around is the robbing of a shipment leaving an undisclosed airport bound for Switzerland. However, there is a problem. Bergman wants his nephew Jimmy Silk (Rockwell) involved, maybe to get his feet wet, or to watch that they are not doublecrossed. He is reckless and without patience. He is not eager to learn and thinks he is wise beyond his years, but he is not as stupid as he appears to be. This wildcard is the reason that the crew begin their double crosses.

Mamet intrigued us with his take on the con-world with his excellent House of Games. He also did a very good job with The Spanish Prisoner. But this plot seems to be tired, especially since I saw "The Score" with Robert DeNiro and Ed Norton a month earlier. They have similar plotlines and while Heist is superior in terms of Dialogue, the Score had more of a payoff and better pacing. There are also things about the movie that bother me. The first is the yet again Hollywood obsession about placing a young woman with an old guy. Yes, Hackman doesn't always look his years, but he's past 70 and Pidgeon looks more like his daughter. It's creepy to see them together. The other is that Joe Moore is a skilled thief who must have spent decades as a thief. He has nothing to show for it. I don't think so...

Sam Rockwell also does a good job. He is the straight man, he is the observer and is always overshadowed by the leads but he does hold his own. The disappointing characters are Pinky (they double cross their mobster boss and he doesn't run?) and Fran. They also bothered me in the Spanish Prisoner. Their static talk drive me up the wall and the last thing Ricky Jay looks like is a thief of any sort.

As in House of Games and Spanish Prisoner, there are twists and turns everywhere, but many of them are fairly predictable. There are no "ooohs" and "aaahs" from the audience as if they are fooled. Maybe we are just too use to seeing Mamet films that the shock of a double cross wore off a long time ago. Without this surprise factor, the Heist becomes a flat film with no real interest....Rating: C

4 out of 5 stars Good, but predictable.......2005-04-28

Once you get over the fact that Heist is going to be a movie easy to figure out, you can let the healing begin and enjoy this film.

Like many movies of its genre, Heist sports the basic plot of planning the biggest theft of the century, a con, and the dilemma of getting away with it. Fortunatly, Heist manages to accomplish this without seeming to rerunnish or boring. Although some of the actors fall flat, both Danny DeVito and Gene Hackman manage to salvage the severed threads and carry them to new heights. Especially DeVito, playing the aggravating and somewhat usual role of the bad guy. Maybe its his height that makes him a rather comical enemy, he kind of has to glower up when making a daunting impression.

Although Heist has its downfalls, its enjoyable movie that leaves you feeling rather satisfied when the credits begin to roll.

Just what the world needs: an all-musical roach revue. What worked as an MTV short film does not work as a feature-length movie. Intelligent cockroaches with lives of their own may seem outré and amusing on the small screen, but are disgusting and eventually boring when we have to spend 80 long minutes with them. Scruffy Jerry O'Connell is the Iowa farm boy who moves to the Big Apple and rents a filthy, bug-infested flat. Turns out those bugs are his only friends. Also turns out that the animated vermin are a whole lot more interesting than the human cast. This is just silly and gross enough for adolescent boys, or those with adolescent tastes. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

Fresh off the bus from iowa, Joe (Jerry O'Connell) is just trying to make it in New York, but he's got no job, no girl and no place to live. But life changes for Joe as he finds an apartment, along with 50,000 singing, dancing roach roommates who teach

4 out of 5 stars a blast from the past.......2007-05-09

i really forgot just how much i loved this movie, this was MTV's first movie and they did a very great job in creating this! this was a cult classic movie, and one i really had to add to my collection!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-04-02

From back when Mtv was till about the music and sick humor! LOved it then and now.

4 out of 5 stars Possibly unique.......2006-05-19

I agree with Alex Meyer's earlier review that there is no other movie quite like "Joe's Apartment." The roaches sing and dance, and engage in dialogue with Joe. In fact, the most important roach characters, the ones with the biggest speaking parts, and so on, get mentioned in the credits. I don't know of another film where an insect gets an actual film credit. :-)

So if you're squeamish about cockroaches, this movie isn't for you, as they're quite realistically done, there are literally thousands of them scurrying around a lot of the time (can you spell Raid?), and they're really the stars of the whole movie. The fun-loving roaches that infest Joe's New York apartment are the biggest (or littlest) party animals in the Big Apple, and their musical numbers and speaking parts and antics are a major part of the movie. The more "advanced" humans definitely take a back seat. :-) The roach animation is very convincing.

I note Robert Vaughn has a little role and it's good to see he's still working. I remember him from a one-man stage performance he did a couple of decades ago where he played Abraham Lincoln for which he received some well-deserved accolades. And Don Ho, of "Little Bubbles" song fame, plays the local gangster. I almost didn't recognize Don as it had probably been 20 years since I'd seen him on screen. Jerry O'Connell as Joe and Megan Ward as the beautiful girl he carries the torch for are perfect choices for their parts, and both turn in fine performances. All in all a fun movie with a possibly unique concept. My hat's off to Geffen for taking a chance with what was probably a very risky movie.

5 out of 5 stars best MTV movie ever.......2006-03-20

IF you ever had ROACH PHOBIA this is the movie to get rid of yur fear, thnks alot i watch this movie every week .....really good movie

1 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars? What are you guys on?!.......2006-01-20

This movie was represented best by roaches because it's about as vile and annoying as that bug.

If you're looking for side-splitting laughs and even a little T&A you've come to the wrong place. I think I chuckled twice through the whole movie. That's it. Those roaches were d**m annoying. I would have torched the entire apartment building just to kill those sons of b**ches.

Anyway, this movie is boring, stupid, not funny and the roaches were lame. Oh, yeah, the "acting" sucked too. I'm glad Jerry Connelly is actually doing something worthwhile now. I might have given this movie more stars if the girl actually got naked but nope.

Three Gangsters vie for the control of Philadelphia

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Makes Superfly look like the Godfather .......2007-02-07

I don't know if this is a movie or a minstrel show.
I would say that it's two things Beanie Siegel and Dame Dash pride themselves on when making these retarded hood movies. One is "keeping it straight hood" another is sterotypes.

There's no need for me say what hasn't already been said about this movie because quite honestly, the horrible quality of this movie speaks for itself.

This isn't black cinema it's black death.

anyone with the intellect that's over 12 years old will let the "State" keep this "Property".

P.S. What's up with the horrible muti-shot scenes( a bunch of scenes in one shot) near the end of the movie where they are attempting to tie up the loose ends the story( if you wanna call it a story). I guess Damon Dash is the next Quentin Taratino(sarcasm).

3 out of 5 stars Orginal is better........2006-09-19

When I first heard that they were making a State Property 2, I was so excited. That is until I got it. This movie wasn't gangsta at all. As a matter of fact, it didn't even have a plot. Damon Dash's performance was horrible. He should stick to producing records. Even though the orignal is low-budget, is was way better than this movie. They should have got the guy who directed the first movie. This movie was straight garbage.

1 out of 5 stars damn.......2005-10-26

i dont know if it was intended to be a comedy or action, cause either way it came out wrong, poor acting and unrealistic events. if you luv the ROC. don't see this movie cause it was definately a mistake

4 out of 5 stars Its a Thug-shoot-em-up movie with a comedic twist........2005-07-24

Damon Dash returns to bring us "state property 2" a more light-hearted sequel than it's gritty original.

Beans(beanie sigel)after running from block to block and taking over most of philly in the original is now serving a 15 year sentence in prison and his crew back home in phily is messing up.Their getting robbed, busted by feds, drugdeals are going sour and they are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
when D-nice visits beans in prison and tells him whats going on,
Beans gets pissed and tells them no more "surprise parties"(watch the film and you know what i mean by that)but he really can't do anything because locked up.Untill he meets "El pollo Loco"(N.O.R.E) and he tells beans when he gets out of prison in one month he will give his crew work and work means that beans crew will be making money.BUT when El pollo and his partner in crime Biggs turn their back on beans and give beans's crew jobs that involve stealing from another crew(dame dash crew)a 3 way crew battle begins.

Now Unlike it's original movie which was dark, gritty, very street and thug, this sequel plays like a thug-comedy.
From The interactive words and designs flying on the screen, to funny lines from all 3 crew's members, to the violent humour(for Example Beans Imagining he's hitting Dame repeately with a shovel)TO El Pollo telling us how he has a diffrent chick to have sex with for everyday of the week and we are shown him in action with these chicks. It's light-hearted humor comedy and i commend Damon Dash for not just rehashing it's gangsta image from the original but for trying to be different and humorous.

The people you will see in this movie are
Beanie sigel, N.O.R.E, damon dash, camron, ol dirty bastard, kanye west, M.O.P, freeway, bernard hopkins, winky wright, oschino, omillio sparks, young gunz, loon, juelz santana, jimmy jones, and mariah carey.

I suggest you rent this movie and you will have a pretty good time watching it. It's a thug movie blended in as a comedy and if your a fan of "Roc-A-Fella" you will love it.

The Opinionated One has Spoken

5 out of 5 stars STATE PROPERTY 2.......2005-07-24

STATE PROPERTY-2 WAS A VERY GOOD MOVIE. BEANIE SIEGEL WAS ABSOLUTLEY GREAT,BUT DAMON DASH CAN'T ACT HIS WAY OUT OF A PAPER BAG. THE MOVIE KEPT YOU LAUGHING AND EVEN WONDERING WHAT BEANS WAS GOING TO DO NEXT. ANYTHING MOVIE THAT COMES OUT WITH BEANIE SIEGEL IN IT I WOULD BUY. THIS GUY IS A TRIP. I HAVE BOTH MOVIES AND WOULD NOT LEND THEM OUT TO ANYONE, THEY GOT TO GO AND GET THEIR OWN. GET THIS MOVIE, BELIEVE ME YOU WOULD NOT BE DISSAPOINTED.

Direct-to-video stylist Albert Pyun sets this plotless, gun-crazy frenzy to the mambo beat of Prez Prado and runs with it. Mobster Ice-T calls dozens of associates to a newly built prison the day before it's dedicated, locks them in, and pits them against one another for a prize of $10 million, which the last three survivors will split. Bleached blond Christopher Lambert is a grinning psycho having a little too much fun, while the soul of the group belongs to the craggy-faced Michael Halsey, a ruthless killer with an odd sense of purpose and a code of honor. The story is merely an excuse for unending gunplay and giddy violence and Pyun rises to the occasion, executing everything from riotous free-for-alls to elaborate chases to Western-style standoffs (complete with a haunting spaghetti Western style guitar and trumpet theme). The video titles, dingy lighting, and dusky color give away the low budget and ultimately the script doesn't make any sense, but Pyun wisely avoids the confusing plot (which he himself sometimes loses) and concentrates on his particular strength: wild, wicked, practically nonstop action driven by a restless camera and rat-a-tat editing. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good movie: No VAMPIRES.......2007-06-07

I really didnt want to comment on this film, especially since my kind have been called out earlier in these other reviews. Lambert fan. Check. B-Movie fan. Check. Mambo fan. Check.

So let me address some of the important issues first. I am so sorry its a violent film with no deep human meaning or understanding. And if that was your complaint then you better not own a copy of Hostel or any other Torture film.

Second, there isnt suppose to be an action hero in the film. If you want a meaning to the movie it is simple. Crime does not pay. In a world of crime and lawlessness eventually even your fellow criminals turn on you.

Why does Lou have his daughter at the prison? Did you watch the film. Lou is either a complete Nut Job or vengeance seeker. From the red flashbacks he either killed a child, kidnapped his own daughter and murdered her mother/father. Or he his doing what he says he is doing, trying to make good for him and his daughter.

Vampires? Vampires? you mean the guy with the fangs at the gate? Or the demon winged guy Lou sees on the building? The first guy is a bodyguard of Moon's who for some reason has custom made teeth in the shape of fangs. So what. He isnt a vampire, never even crossed my mind that way. He just fits in as a poser gang style thug. Very cyberpunkish. The "demonic image" on the roof is a hallauciantion of Lou's, similar to the boy in the hallway.

The movis is simply 90 minutes of action, set with decent music and fun editing. The characters are largely stereotypes, but no more then Spider-Man, Captain Jack Sparrow or Shreck. So relax, pop some pop corn, turn off your brain and enjoy it for what it is.

Or you can go rent Matilda.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is awesome to the MAX!.......2007-06-02

I don't know what any of these pretentious jerks are talking about. This wasn't meant to be a "great movie". It didn't set out to move you, or give you deeper insight into yourself or the world at large. This movie's purpose isn't to inspire, or to give a greater depth of understanding to the human condition... and if you watched it hoping for any of that hippie crap you are stupid.

This is an action movie. There is gratuitous violence, killing, and foul language. Of the Three things that can make a pulp movie good (Karate, Explosions, or Midieval Stuff) this movie scores a 2/3. Thats pretty good. I might be stretching it with the explosions bit, but when there is THIS much gun-fighting, I count it anyway.

There is tons of great action, even more great one liners. Christopher Lambert plays his role brilliantly, when you consider what he is supposed to be playing, and even Ice T does a good job.

If you don't like this movie, its because you are a snob, and you are expecting too much from a movie that is CLEARLY meant to entertain. If you liked this movie, it means you know what an Action movie is supposed to be about, and you are probably Hardcore as well.

2 out of 5 stars Dumb Guns...but great soundtrack.......2006-11-30

Christopher Lambert and Ice-T are supposed to be the stars here, but what little depth this movie has comes from Michael Halsey, who turns a professional killer into a sympathetic figure (and that ANYONE can earn any sympathy in this bit of video treacle is itself an achievement).

If you're not a big fan of bloodless, mindless gunplay, the only reason to buy this movie is for the soundtrack. Mambo fans will actually enoy it, as well as the Andean flute/guitar instrumental.

4 out of 5 stars Mean Guns.......2006-07-22

This movie is not for everyone. The story line is good but some parts of the movie are just to far fetched to make this a great movie. But if want something different like watching a solid 90 minutes of over a hundred people geting shot, stabbed ,and/or beaten to death. THIS IS A MUST SEE MOVIE!

4 out of 5 stars Lives up to its promise.......2006-06-02

"Mean Guns" is exactly what it promises to be: a violent gunfight fest with very little interference of a presumed plot. There are gunfights and comic relief aplenty and the action moves fast enough to keep you interested. The reviews are correct - if you are looking for an art film with clearly developed characters, this film is not for you. However, if you want a violent (albeit amazingly bloodless) shoot em up with some comic moments, this film succeeds. Put it in the same category as "The Replacement Killers" - no thinking required.

Actor Kiefer Sutherland makes his directorial debut with this ho-hum film about a threadbare subject: a drug heist that goes badly, resulting in the bad guys having to kidnap two people and the ensuing complications. A fine cast assures good performances all around, but it's hard to go down this narrative road for the umpteenth time in the '90s. One bonus is the presence of Kim Dickens, an interesting actress who started becoming more visible in movies in 1997 and 1998 (Zero Effect, Great Expectations). The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, optional French and Spanish soundtracks and subtitles, and theatrical trailer. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Kiefer.......2007-04-20

For anyone who likes Kiefer Sutherland this movie is a must to own. I was not only impressed with his character but equally impressed with his dirceting of this film. Actually, I feel this is one the best rolls I have seen him perform.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Movie With Some Great Music.......2006-09-01

Jude Cole's beautiful song Heaven's Last Attempt plays perfectly to the opening scene. Other great music by The Outlaws, Van Morrison, Vibrolush and The Allman Bros. to name a few. The movie itself doesn't always work though just to see the always great Kiefer Sutherland as "Curtis" let loose in a wild, drug-fueled dance to Foghat's Cheteau Lafitte '59 Boogie would make it worth viewing. Fortunatly Kiefer delivers more than just a dance. Though Curtis is a sociopath, you can't help but like him because of the perfectly delivered comedic moments that Kiefer gives him. Vincent Gallo, Kim Dickens and Kevin Pollak are all great as well.

4 out of 5 stars Cut this Movie Some Slack.......2006-07-22

Kiefer Sutherland (TV's "24") made his directorial debut with this crime film starring Vincent Gallo ('Buffalo 66' & 'The Brown Bunny'), Kim Dickens ('Palookaville' & 'Hollow Man'), Sutherland, Martin Sheen ('Apocalypse Now'), and Kevin Pollak ('The Whole Nine Yards'). The only reason I found out about this movie was because it starred Gallo (who wrote & directed Buffalo 66, one of my favorite movies) and he's a pretty good and underrated actor. In this film, Gallo plays Raymond; a petty criminal who we meet as he's getting out of prison. Next he's in a diner with his girlfriend Addy (Dickens), Curtis (Kiefer Sutherland, who plays these psychotic criminal roles perfectly), and Marcus (Mykelti Williams). The gang are planning to bust into a drug deal and take the drugs to sell themselves, but things go bad when they shoot an undercover cop. Now they're on the run from the cops and running out of options, so they take a young couple named Gordon and Donna (Pollak and Grace Phillips) hostage. After they kill a mob boss, hell is unleashed in the form of Sir (Sheen) an assassin guy for the mob. It's a weird movie that could easily be compared to a film called
"Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man." Both are crime movies and both have strange events occur, both films have the same mood...But, for the record, this movie is a lot better. Sutherland's directorial debut definitely has a first film-feel to it, it's no masterpiece. But it is an entertaining, intelligent, and well-acted movie that deserves more credit than some people give it. Gallo is a scene-stealer and the charisma with Dickens (who he also worked with on "Palookaville") is perfect. Kevin Pollak and Grace Phillips add some comedic relief to the story; Especially Pollak, who plays straight-shooting guy who's fascinated with the crooks. There's also a plot twist involving one of the main characters that could've worked nicely but is revealed way to early. Overall, 'Truth or Consequences, N.M.' is a film that can easily fill in an hour and a half of your night in better ways than some other movies can.
