4 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing (no matter your sexual orientation).......2007-06-17

As a straight married man I found this movie to be so moving as to be heart-rendingly painful. I fully understand Paulie's frustration and rejection. I experienced something similar when I was twenty. My best friend(a girl)and I started to become a lot closer so I told her how I truly felt. Big mistake! The entire relationship unravelled instantly and I made an absolute fool of myself for the next six months trying to "win" her love. I was a neurotic wreck for two years afterwards not letting another woman get that close to me until I eventually met the woman that became my wife (and I thank God for her everyday!).

As a father of two daughters I realize that I can't control who they love, that's up to them. This movie has shown me not to be too judgmental about sexual issues. Like Paulie said - love just is.

I highly recommend this movie as an average straight joe because anyone with a heart that has ever been broken into a million pieces will fully understand this movie and have flashbacks during every heart-tugging scene between Paulie and Tori. Yes,I'm man enough to admit I cried at the end! It hit me that hard and profoundly.

This is not a purely lesbian love story/film by any means. This is a story about love and being loved. It's very powerful to say the least. There have been very few films to ever leave a mark on me, this is definitely one of them.

What an amazing piece of film!

5 out of 5 stars strange..........2007-06-12

Sometimes there's a movie that gives you a feeling that no other movie has ever made you feel. This movie did that for me. I don't know if it was having felt a similar situation, but I felt more empathy towards these characters than I ever have for any in a film.
This movie was beautiful and painful to watch, not because it was bad, but because it made me feel so much for the girls.
I got this feeling that I can't quite name, but this movie struck me as unique and moving, a beautiful piece that I completely recommend.

3 out of 5 stars girls in school.......2007-06-03

I wish Misha Barton had a more active part in the affair. Piper is yummy

3 out of 5 stars Saved by the cast.......2007-04-25

This film about various forms of rejection is strange even by Canadian standards. It begins to fall apart about the time the boarding-school lesbian relationship falls apart. By then the writer(s) has resorted to melodramatic use of Shakespeare to demonstrate the crazed intensity of lost love -- a sign that the writer had exhausted her own resources.

There is a nude scene with the pretty and very-well-endowed Jessica Paré to recommend it to guys, and the school has a bucolic setting. However, the best thing about the film for me are the sightings of some amazing American and Candian actresses early in their careers. Besides Piper Perabo (American) and Jessica Paré (Canadian), the story's central character is played by a very young Mischa Barton -- already a willowy beauty. Also in the cast in a few scenes each are Canadian actresses Emily Van Camp and Caroline Dhavernas (she is especially pretty here, and is already speaking English without an accent).

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2007-03-13

The story is a bit far-fetched at best, but Piper Perabo delivers a solid performance following up Coyote Ugly. She is believable as the lovesick heroine in this film, and I found myself really feeling sorry for her as I watched her unravel emotionally and physically.

Reunited for the first time since "Victor/Victoria", Academy Award winner Julie Andrews and Emmy Award winner James Garner portray two strangers who take refuge in a small cabin during a stormy winter night and, despite their differences, or perhaps because of them, they are undeniably drawn to one another in this holiday classic that demonstrates once again the charisma that has made them two of the world's most beloved stars.

If the title It Happened One Night hadn't already been taken for Frank Capra's romantic comedy classic, it would've worked just as well for this holiday charmer. Catherine (Julie Andrews) is a widowed pediatric physician (with no children of her own) and Robert (James Garner) is a contractor with a wife suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Due to an accident of fate (a winter storm), they end up spending Thanksgiving together in an abandoned cabin, away from their family and friends. The two initially wary strangers soon find they have more in common than either could have anticipated. The subplot concerning Robert's adult daughters is fairly extraneous (and predictable) but doesn't distract from the tender relationship at the heart of this made-for-TV movie. Andrews and Garner have worked together before, in The Americanization of Emily and Victor/Victoria, and it shows in the chemistry generated by their sympathetic, believable performances. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Sentimental.......2007-03-11

I really like the pairing of Julie Andrews and James Garner in their older years. Give me the tenderness of a love story, even if the plot is a bit contrived, over the violence in many of today's award-winning movies.

4 out of 5 stars Andrews and Garner are great together!.......2007-03-09

I love Julie Andrews and James Garner. They are both such consumate actors, and the chemistry between them was wonderful in this. If you love romance, you will definitely want to add this one to your collection--and you can't beat the price...less than $6! Garner and Andrews are strangers that come together during a heavy snowstorm and end up spending the night together in a remote cabin. Their initial impressions of one another are softened as they get to know one another. Similar to the "An Affair to Remember" plot, they agree to meet, not at the Empire State Building, but at a local cafe for chocolate chip pancakes to celebrate their "survival" and continue their acquaintance. It would ruin your viewing pleasure to say more.

5 out of 5 stars A little treasure, perfect for a snowy winter day!.......2007-02-25

What an unexpected little gem of a film. Julie Andrews took my breath away in her first scene when she walks out of her house with a winter hat on... she really is a beautiful woman. G-d certainly gave to Julie with both hands & a basket. Andrews' performance was right on target playing Katherine the widowed pediatric cardiolist. The storyline, not unique, but different because of their situations, was really cute & fun with a few unexpected delights.

James Garner, whom I LOVED, in THE NOTEBOOK, was fabulous as the husband of an alzheimers patient in hospice & then a widower. Their chemistry is undeniable.
I remember being about 20 when VICTOR/VICTORIA came out and it was one of my favorite movies! Garner & Andrews still bring life to the screen separately and together. I am a "renewed" fan of them both.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic movie between a Widow (Julie Andrews) & Widower (James Garner).......2007-01-09

Wholeome family movie with interesting romantic story set in beautiful winter scenery. Fun and lighthearted for all to enjoy. This is a real keeper and you can't beat the amazing acting along with a splash of humor of Julie Andrews and James Garner ! Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Holiday Romance.......2007-01-03

This is a great holiday romance with lots of old fashioned sentiment. I have seen it many times, but my parents had not. I bought it to send to them and they said that they loved it and will watch it every year around Christmas time.

    Description

ARMISTEAD MAUPIN'S FURTHER TALES OF THE CITY is the third installment of Maupin's classic saga of San Francisco life. Set in 1981, the four-hour miniseries involves the residents of 28 Barbary Lane in a racy and rollicking adventure/mystery that leaps from Golden Gate Park to the home of a Hollywood icon to a remote island in the Alaskan wilderness. As usual in Maupin's world, romantic entanglements abound. Landlady Anna Madrigal (OLYMPIA DUKAKIS) is stunned by her mother's sudden arrival. Mother Mucca (JACKIE BURROUGHS) who runs a bordello in Nevada is in town to take care of personal business and meets a man from her past, Royal Reichenbach (JOHN MCMARTIN). When Mother Mucca introduces Anna to Royal, they find themselves in a rivalry over him. Madrigal's tenants have their own stories from the past to unravel. Michael Tolliver (PAUL HOPKINS) is working at a nursery called "Best Laid Plants." He tries to get over being dumped by his former lover Dr. Jon Fielding (BILLY CAMPBELL) who went off to work on a cruise ship.

Exploring his sexuality full tilt, Michael embarks on a series of sexual escapades involving cowboys, cops and Cage Tyler (JOHN ROBINSON) a closeted movie star. Michael's friend and neighbor Mary Ann Singleton (LAURA LINNEY) is challenged with a relationship problem of a different kind. Her boyfriend and upstairs neighbor, Brian Hawkins (WHIP HUBLEY) who has spent most of his adult life as a womanizer, comes to the realization that he wants to marry her. She, however, is hesitant to take the next step as she is focused on her career. Longing to become a serious reporter, but not given a chance by her station manager, she is forced to work as a daytime host of the "Bargain Matinee" show. Mary Ann's late boss' widow, socialite Frannie Halcyon (DIANA LEBLANC) is tormented by her daughter DeDe's (BARBARA GARRICK) apparent demise in the Jonestown Massacre. Living on Mai Tais and sleeping pills, she refuses to accept that DeDe and her children, Little Anna and Edgar were killed. She seeks advice from psychics to help her find her missing daughter. When a fortune-teller convinces her that DeDe is indeed alive, she asks for the support of society columnist Prue Giroux (MARY KAY PLACE) to make her story public. When Prue refuses to get involved, Frannie calls Mary Ann to share her secret. Since Mary Ann is always searching for a good story, she is eager to meet in hopes of finally getting a break on the evening news.

Meanwhile, Prue meets a mysterious homeless man, Luke (HENRY CZERNY) in Golden Gate Park. Immediately drawn to his intense charm, she falls madly in love with him. Little does she know that she's opening Pandora's Box when she attempts to bring him back to society with the help of flamboyant celebrity priest Father Paddy Star (BRUCE MCCULLOCH). Luke's past is far more sinister than Prue could ever imagine. Then it's revealed that DeDe Halcyon Day has spent three years in Cuba with her lover Dorothea (FRANÇOISE ROBERTSON) after escaping the massacre in Guyana. She ends up in a camp for gay Cuban refugees in Fort Chafee, Arkansas and finally calls her mother Frannie in San Francisco to tell her that she wants to come home. Through DeDe's unexpected reappearance and a twist of fate, the storylines begin to intertwine and all of the characters in Maupin's tales find themselves in the midst of an unpredictable adventure.

I just love this series! Since it had to end sometime, this had a good ending.

4 out of 5 stars The Third Installment.......2007-04-15

    "Further Tales of the City"

    The Third Installment

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Here we go again. "Further Tales of the City" is the third mini series based on the books of Armistad Maupin. It s a bit shorter than the two prior series but doesn't mean it is not as good. None will be as the first but the third is wonderful on its own. It has a great storyline and it is lots of fun. There is a lot of mystery and a lot of romance (and more frontal male nudity). Maupin was one of the first authors to integrate gay and straight characters into a novel and then we watched them mature and grow throughout six books. If you have lived in the real world, you know that Maupin has recreated the story of our lives and has done so beautifully. He writes about normal, everyday people who become our extended family and the mini series do for us on the screen what Maupin did on the printed page.
This series strays a bit from the books but the added storyline--that of Mother Mucca is great. I knew I did not have to worry about being disappointed in the screen adaptations of Maupin's books from the moment I started watching. Every nuance of every character is caught.
"Further Tales" begins some four years later than "More Tales of the City". The "ME" decade of the 80's is beginning and this is obvious throughout.
Maupin has stated that the main influence upon him when he writes is Alfred Hitchcock and as you watch the series you will see that. The stories and the characters overlap one another and the participants do not seem to notice this at all, Like Hitchcock, Maupin appears in a cameo.
Mary Ann has begun to notice love in her neighborhood. He has also landed a very hot news story and is waiting to spring it on her boss. As she and DeDe Halcyon-Day go through some great twists and turns, there is a wonderful comedy of errors. But have no fear. Anna Madrigal and Michael have their own subplots and their own twists and turns but it is Mary Ann that has the spotlight this time.
I have heard complaints that the ending is too happy. I think those that feel that way have forgotten just how many stories and subplots we have and how long all of this has been going on. The series is meant to entertain and we have all kids of entertainment here--a chase to Alaska, a kidnapping, a born again Christian wielding a gun and blowing someone away.
The third installment is darker than the others but that makes it even more fun. We must also remember that the 80's marked the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and one of the characters has signs that he has the disease. There is also the Jim Jones storyline which gives the conspiracy theorists something to consider.
Laura Linney as Mary Ann knows her character and is great Dukakis is always wonderful. The new storyline, as far-fetched as it is, works and the entire series is a wonderful look at the way we live. I can't say enough good things about the entire series.

5 out of 5 stars The newspaper, the books and the TV show.......2007-03-08

When you think that Tales of the City led to national outrage in the US when it first aired on PBS in 1994, you almost don't believe it. Much has changed since then and part of that change must be credited to Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City; indeed, it paved the way for Ellen, for Will & Grace, for Queer as Folk, the L Word, Six Feet Under... you name it.
When you read the books, you become a prisoner of Armistead's wit and you can't stop reading. The short chapter structure, inherited from its daily serial early life in the San Francisco Chronicle, makes these books the perfect companion for short underground (subway) or bus journeys. The only problem is that as soon as you're done reading one chapter, you simply want to read further. With the exception of a few "one night stands", characters in the Tales are recurrent and they come and go into the lives of the main characters in such way that the only omnipresent and omniscient person is the reader. This helplessness of the characters and the inevitability of what you suspect is going to happen keeps you reading.
The TV series shares these exact same characteristics except that each episode (lasting for about 1,5 h) keeps you seated in front of your screen while you follow the lives of those living at 28 Barbary Lane.
Forget your prejudices. The Tales are actually about sharing your life with others and being good. It's about friendship and being open to it in the most unlikely places.
Further Tales of the City is the 3rd DVD of this most watchable TV series.

5 out of 5 stars Still a fun "tale" to watch........2007-02-22

I hadn't watched this miniseries since its debut on Showtime back in 2001; I'm happy to say it's just as engaging as ever. While more condensed than its previous two miniseries, it still grabs you & sucks you into the "City" of yesterday, the early 80's, more than ever. It's also the mark of a good author such as Armistead Maupin and the skill of the actors who bring these quirky & diverse but "extended family" of characters who populate 28 Barbary Lane, to wonderful life.
The first two miniseries were good, full of surprising twists & turns, suspense, and frank sexual freedom, and "Further.." is no exception. Here's hoping for number 4!

5 out of 5 stars don't be a dink and miss this fatabulous series!.......2007-01-10

The only thing wrong with this series is all of the books are not on tape . Loved the books .Loved the movies.

3 out of 5 stars Sheena still has sheen.......2007-06-16

When Sheena The Queen of the Jungle (Tanya Roberts) clashes with unscrupulous big city types, she calls on her animal friends -- Marika the zebra, Kima the jaguar, Katula and Keibar the lions, and Tiki and Chiki the chimps -- to help her rumble in the jungle. With the exception of a replica rhino head and some phony flamingoes, the carnivorous animals in Sheena are real and usually just a hair's breadth away from the actors. Marika the zebra is portrayed by an Arabian horse adorned with artistically painted stripes.

The movie's definitely dated, but it's a true guilty pleasure and anyone who enjoys an old-style jungle adventure won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars And the jungle reeked for days..........2007-02-07

Tanya can't act her way out of a - well, anything, but she can get out of any clothing whatever, and the gratuitous shots from below as she climbs trees and swings from ropes are great good fare for pubescent teenage boys without much of a social life. Fred Wass does what he does best, wanders around on cue and collects a paycheck for no obvious reason. Any one over the age of eighteen will want to drink a lot of beer while wasting time with this.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF AFRICAN WORLD.......2007-01-10

I love this film, I think Tanya Roberts is an excellent actress, and the rest of the cast have made a good roll too; I really liked the work of France Zobda (Jeena's spiritual guide), she and Tanya are a very special pair in the film; Ted Wass made very good work as Sheena's boyfriend; I like all of the scenes, the film is completely: a lot of drama, romance, action and comedy too, the story is excellent (a mad prince kills his brother the king and accuse the zambulli's spiritual woman guide, and Sheena had to protect her and the zambulli people who was going to be killed); the film also has a wonderful shots of the African paradise, enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Tanya, my love.......2006-08-23

Worth it for Tanya's 2 bathing scenes. I knew the girl had talent.

While it pales in comparison to the outstanding animation of its predecessor, Don Bluth's imaginative if somewhat graceless All Dogs Go to Heaven, this 1995 sequel has some nice moments of its own. Charlie Sheen replaces Burt Reynolds as the voice of Charlie Barkin, the afterlife-stranded pooch who sought vengeance against his killer in the previous film but instead discovered the joys of earthly love and community. This time, a bored Charlie, looking for a little adventure, reteams with his old pal Itchy (voiced by Dom DeLuise) to retrieve Gabriel's Horn after it's stolen. Dropping down from Dog Heaven to take on his old nemesis (and killer), Carface (Ernest Borgnine), Charlie falls for a sexy Irish setter (Sheena Easton) and helps a boy caught in a jam. Featuring grand pop songs by the legendary songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 provides kids with a simpler story than Bluth's original film, as well as less unsettling violence. On the downside, director Paul Sabella, a Hanna-Barbera veteran who produced television's The Smurfs, either can't or won't stretch much as an artist here. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars ALL DOGS... is a very good series in general.......2007-03-13

Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.

I would recommend this for young children. It does have quite a few concepts that are not appropriate, but are presented in a way that is way over the heads of children adn does have a few scenes that very concervative parents may term violent.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved Both!.......2006-05-06

Now, I grew up watching All Dogs Go To Heaven. I probably watched it twice a week! Even though the storyline was pretty confusing, it was by far the "best movie ever!" And when I heard about All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, i was so excited! As soon as the library got it we rushed and got it. And you know what, I fell in love with Charlie and Itchy all over again. It was just like being a little kid again! And I like how they made the "devil" not as scary. The devil, known in this movie as Red, is actually somewhat likeable. In the original, I had to prety much close my eyes when they showed Charlie's dream about...h***! He was like this big dinosaur! In the second He was cat. Which makes sense in a movie where dogs are the good guys...Dogs go to heaven, and cats, well, don't.

Also, in the original, it was music-based and I love that they kept the entertaining music alive in the 2nd. And in the 1st ADGTH, it seemed like there were scenes added without any explaination, and it was kind of hard to follow. So, I'm glad that ADGTH2 has a straight forward storyline. Well, to rap it all up, i think both movies deserve 2 thumbs up.

What is the deal. Cant Hollywood leave well enough alone. How many classic animated movies are they going to ruin with sequels? Let me think, their was Balto 2, Little Mermaid 2, Aladdin 2 and three, Secret of Nimh 2, Land before time 2,3,4,5,6,7 etc. enough already. Next thing you know they'll be making a Lion King 2, and a Buity and the Beast 2. O wait, they already did that didn't they. All the movies I have named were great originals but God awful sequels. ADGTH 2 is just as bad. If you loved the original, STAY AWAY FROM ITS SEQUAL.

Paul Schrader's Affliction, adapted from the novel by Russell Banks (The Sweet Hereafter), charts the slow descent of small-town sheriff Wade Whitehouse (a raspy, gruffly restrained Nick Nolte) into violence, the legacy of the corrupt love of an abusive, alcoholic father. The story ostensibly centers on a hunting death on the outskirts of town, but as Wade digs into what may or not be a conspiracy, his personal life spirals out of control. James Coburn, who deservedly won an Oscar for his mocking, sneering performance, is Wade's father, who jumps back into the cycle of abuse when Wade moves in to care for the aging man. Chronicling the story in distant, dispassionate tones is Willem Dafoe as Wade's younger brother Rolfe, who "escaped" his father's legacy in a world of books. Schrader has made his reputation revealing the scarred psyches of American men trying to reconcile the contradictions of masculine fantasy and social reality, as in his screenplays for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, and in Affliction he creates his most poignant and powerful work. The quiet beauty of the snow-blanketed New Hampshire setting (using Canadian locations) and Schrader's restrained yet intimate cinematic style builds the underlying emotional tensions until they explode in startling close-ups, revealing the repressed fear, rage, and helplessness cracking through Wade's carefully maintained façade. As Rolfe's narration coolly analyzes his brother's affliction, he reveals his own: an emotional remove so complete that he's edited himself out of his family history. The legacy of abuse leaves no one untouched. --Sean Axmaker

2 out of 5 stars UGH!...I lived this and still was bored to tears!!!!!!.......2007-06-20

AFFLICTION is about one thing alone; how abuse affects future generations and those that are in the path of the abuser. That said, having come from the this background myself, all I could think of is "Yes this is all sadly true. I know that. I have experienced it first hand. Why did someone feel compelled to make a film about it?" If this film was to enlighten those who lived the idyllic childhood with great parents, perhaps then that audience will be the one most affected by their own disbelief that something could be so tragic. I lived through all that this movie presented, and personally was bored with the entire plot. I knew from moment one where this film was going and NOTHING shocked me or moved me in the least...not even the ending.

AFFLICTION presents an absolute hopeless and nonredeeming story of the legacy of abuse as if there is no escape and nothing but misery and aimlessness for those that lived through it. I cannot disagree more, and this is why I found the movie dull and arriving at a wrong conclusion as far as I am concerned. True, many do not rise above these unfortunate circumstances...granted. There are just as many that do,though! This film presented the "victim" side of abuse and not the "victorious". These people in this New Hampshire town just walked about in a mindless fog, victims simply carrying out their fate. Not for me! Sorry.

Despite James Coburn playing the drunk and violent father, I still believe that his Oscar win was a sympathy nod due to his age.I have seen this role done better and with more force from Dicken's adaptations. Nolte was nothing special and neither was Sissy Spacek. Willem Dafoe has little screen time and does deadpan narration. This film is as bleak as they come and nothing special...especially for those who broke the "affliction" of violence in their own lives.

As important a subject as abuse and violence is, that does not mean that with an assemblage of Oscar winning actors makes it at all a great, watchable or even necessary film.

Films such as the French A LOVING FATHER handled this subject with alot more panache and evenhandedness.

Okay....you can come after me now!!! Let's see where the violence is lurking in you!

    2 out of 5 stars Crap.......2007-06-09

Just because a movie is "indie" and isn't "Hollywood" does not in itself mean that it's good. Based on the evidence of this and The Sweet Hereafter I feel pretty sure that Russell Banks' books, while they may make for acceptable fiction, are not suited for the screen.

The performances are good, particularly Coburn. It's so nice to see Sissy Spacek in ANYTHING, and Nolte was fine, but his performance in The Thin Red Line was much more intense and said much more (to me) about male pride and violence that this entire movie did.

First of all, are we really all shocked to learn that violent and abusive parents beget violent and abusive children? Is that news? Is there anything else this movie has to say? I left the theater feeling that the performances and direction were fine, it's just that what this film had to say just wasn't very interesting. I can see why actors wanted to be in it, since there are so few characters these days, but why make this movie? What does it really have to offer anyone? And why see it?

This is actually one of the movies that was most instrumental in my decision to sharply reduce the amount of movies I see in the theaters, and to stop seeing all these crappy "acclaimed indie" movies of the week. Paul Schrader, if you ever read this, please know that your film put at least me not just off that film, but off of watching movies forever! You know, if you can reach just one person...

3 out of 5 stars Powerful Acting, Powerful Movie.......2007-05-21

Affliction has a great cast, including Nick Nolte, James Coburn, Sissy Spaceck, and Willem Dafoe. It does an excellent job of portraying the dead end lives that can accompany certain small towns. The murder mystery aspect of the movie takes a back seat to the drama of Nolte's past, and how it has affected him. This was a wise move, as I cared more about Nolte anyway. Certainly not a feel good movie, it is worth watching, if not for the plot, than for the vast array of talent on display.

4 out of 5 stars Tour De Force, a bit chaotic.......2006-05-31

Excellent idea, nolte, coburn, and spacek carry this movie through a somewhat chaotic script. Different, deep and thought provoking, unlike most mindless dribble comeing out of hollywood.

    5 out of 5 stars Disturbing.......2005-05-27

I saw this outstanding yet very disturbing movie shortly after it came out. It staid with me and, as I had a chance to see it again tonight, it still makes a very strong impression.

The premise of the movie sounds like the old Biblical proverb that the sins of the fathers are visited upon the sons. Most of us have seen a lot of truth in that adage. Likewise most of us never had a father like Wade did in "Affliction". This is an extreme lesson in that Wade's father (played excellently by James Coburn) is an alcoholic, abusive, #%@**&$.

The movie develops the theme extremely well. We start out with seemingly but tellingly innocent glimpses of Wade's incompetance as a father. He is divorced, his young daughter is with him for Halloween, he can't think of much to say to her and keeps finding ways to leave her to go out and gab with the guys. The movie gets our attention with the emergance of a somewhat interesting plot. However, all along we become a bit more uncomfortable with the character of Wade. Yet, if we think Wade is weird, we KNOW that his father is psychotic. Coburn won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his brilliant and haunting preformance an the evil father. Events create the need for Wade to move back home with his father and that's when things really go downhill for him. Enough about the plot! The power of "Affliction" is in the characters of the father and son. This movie will disturb you and some may want to challenge the message. Fair enough. I certainly can't complain about my upbringing so I don't have a point of comparison. However, I have noticed, over the years, little picadillos that confuse me until I remember their origen im my childhood. I believe that the basic premise is true and the auther, to make a point, picked a extreme example.

Watch "Affliction" for its' excellence in acting, writing, and directing. But be sure and hug your son afterwards.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde DVD Review.......2004-11-14

    The Story
Dr. Jacks is a perfume scent maker. But he's also a scientist. One day he discovers that one of his long lost relatives was the infamous Dr. Jekyll. When he tries the formula to try to perfect it, he unleashes his alter ego, Ms. Hyde. Now he must try to find a way to reverse the curse before its too late and she takes his body and his job.

    My Review
I had seen this a while back on tv. Not completely in full, but most of the film. So recently i found the DVD at my local best buy for 5.99. I bought it with 2 other 5.99 dvds (being The Great White Hype, and The Adventures of Pinnochio). So today i watched it and i rediscovered why i enjoyed the movie so much. Its not a horror film, its a comedy. The acting i thought was pretty good and the effects while not the best were decent enough to get the job done. The young woman who plays Helen Hyde, actress Sean Young, is attractive and quite the evil lady. The movie starts as Jacks goes to a relative's will reading. He inherrits his great grandfather's scientifit journals. It is here that he discovers that he's not a Jacks at all, but a Jekyll.

Jacks starts to study the formula closely and discovers that maybe certain things had to be upped before the formula could actually work. What he does is up the estrogine that's inside by 160%. What ends up happening is that its too much, and now instead of turning into an evil hyde man, he becomes a female. Now his life is thrown into chaos as he tries to keep his job going with the perfume place trying to make a new scent, keeping his love life together, and trying to get rid of Hyde. It only gets more difficult when Hyde herself tries to work up a scent and try to take over his life and his job. Funny things happen, and in the end the guy has the last laugh.

Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde is rated PG-13 for slight nudity and sexual inuendo.

    DVD Featurs
This is the only bad thing about the dvd. THERE ARE NO FEATURES WHAT SO EVER! Not even a trailer! Its almost like a simple transfer of a widescreen VHS version of the movie onto a DVD-R.

    The bottom Line
If your into laughs and just want a good comedy, this one's for you. Just don't expect anything extra other than a decent widescreen transfer of the film.

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't this great movie on DVD?.......2003-05-05

I won't tell you the story because the other reviews already did. Just know that, though this isn't the best movie ever made, it's not that bad either. The other people who reviewed this movie as poor are way too critical. Relax and have fun. A wacky comedy that's enjoyable and weird. Hopefully, it will be released on DVD.

    4 out of 5 stars The Movie.......2001-10-28

I first saw this movie on cable and liked it. A friend of mine had this movie and we watched it. It was great. A remake of the original and ten times better. It starts off when Dr. J canges into Ms. H. Well lets just say she reveales some great parts of her body to us. This is a deffinate buy.

3 out of 5 stars Delightfully campy spoof on the horror book.......2001-05-24

This 1995 spoof of the famous "Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde," is disappointing in its comedy, mostly focusing on body references and sexual humor to only produce chuckles and groans.

Tim Daly (Dr. Jacks) tries to find a potion to cure the source of human evil by adding estrogen to the potion. By doing this, he transforms into sexy (and annoying) seductress Helen Hyde (Sean Young) on occasions. Helpless to stop this process of man to woman and woman to man, Dr. Jacks tries to convince his fiancee, Sarah (sexy and always watchable Lysette Anthony) to help him find a cure for taking Helen out for good.

The movie is delightfully campy in the beginning, but in the last 15 to 30 minutes, suddenly turns somewhat suspenseful, hilarious, and romantic. A hilariously campy movie with a satisfying ending. Rated PG-13 for crude sex-related scenes and humor, sexual innueudo, nudity and language.

1 out of 5 stars Poor, bad, horrible, painful to watch, take a pick.......2001-02-03

A young doctor transforms into a psychotic woman on a regular basis. If this plotline excites you, than you might find something you like in this movie. I didn't. I actually found it to be one of the worst movies I have ever watched. Sean Young is a strong contender for being the most annoying actress there ever was, back to back with Melanie Griffith. This film is unfunny to the extreme and I strongly suggest that people beware of it.

4 out of 5 stars stunning period drama.......2001-05-10

Based on Danielle Steel's bestseller, VANISHED is a fine piece of frothy drama.

Marielle Delauney (Lisa Rinna), and her adoring husband Charles are savouring the delights of Paris in the 20's. But an accident that ends in the tragic death of their young son tears them apart.

Marielle moves to New York, under the employ of the dashing Malcolm Patterson (George Hamilton). Soon courtship and marriage follow, but the past still remains to haunt Marielle.

When Marielle falls pregnant, her estranged first husband is shocked and digusted at her, for having a second chance, still blaming her for their son's death.

When her infant son is kidnapped, Marielle learns that her ex has been arrested of the crime. In disbelief she searches for the answer to the disappearance with FBI agent John Taylor (Robert Hayes).

Fine romance, mystery and intrigue, with Lisa Rinna a richly glowing heroine.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting and very touching !.......2000-01-16

Here you can enjoy Lisa Rinna (known as Taylor from Melrose Place) as the main character and George Hamilton in one of the most exciting and touching novel by Danielle Steel. Lisa Rinna is a very romantic and lovable character who loses her first child by a teribble accident. She can't get over it and so her marriage gets destroyed. She finds another man she falls in love with and she gets pregnant again. But her past seems to repeat... Watch it and enjoy "Vanished" and you'll find out that you better trust nobody !
