I am amazed that with all the new and glossy DVDs we own, that The White Seal is such a huge hit with my 4 year old daughter. She's never asked to watch the new computer animated Care Bears movie or the colorful My Little Pony movie over and over like this one. She loves the white seal and is interested in the story. I originally bought this, Mowgli's Brothers, and Rikki Tikki Tavi because Rikki was a HUGE favorite with my 1st grade class decades ago when I was little. So when my daughter, wanting something new, went through my DVD collection and asked to watch these stories, I was curious how they'd hold up next to all the new kid stuff. But it is facinating how classics never die and will be forever loved by children no matter how out of date they look. This is definitely old style animation and not shiny and glossy like some of the Disney clean ups, but it is is clear enough and a joy to watch-- great story and narration. No sarcasm or crazy weird animated segments-- just a good straight forward story.

Kotick is a Winner!!.......2005-12-22

Of the three half-hour Jungle Book adaptations that Chuck Jones did in the 1980s, this is undoubtedly the best, the story of Kotick, the white seal who learns about the world, including man's hunting of his brethren, and searches for a place where the seals can live unmolested. This has Jones' signature style about it, but is immensely true to the Kipling story, which is narrated by Roddy McDowall, and a highlight of the production is Dean Elliot's beautiful score, adapted from Beethoven's Sixth Symphony.

Along with Kotick's story, included on this disk is Jones' The Cricket in Times Square, a faithful adaptation of the George Selden children's novel that has not been out of print since its original publication. It's the charming story of Chester, a country cricket who finds a new home in the Times Square subway station in NYC and who discovers he can play any musical piece he hears once. Violinist Israel Baker provides Chester's unique "voice."

This DVD is practically perfect. There are some dust specks and flecks visible; however the colors and lines are bright and clean and the sound is good. The only downside to this DVD is the interminable previews that you are automatically subjected to. Hint: pressing the menu button on your DVD remote won't help, but once the previews start, you CAN skip through them by pressing the chapter button until you get to the actual menu.

Chuck Jones brings to life to classic tales that are sure to be loved by the entire family. The stories incorporate exciting elements that both engage children and entertain adults much like its Looney Tunes roots while also focusing on more substansive themes that will teach and develop young minds. Traditionally animated in the classic style that was pioneered by Jones, the vibrant colors and sheer beauty capture the true spirit of his animation genius. From the early 1960s right up to the death-blow wielded by The Meese Commission, anything went on 42nd Street in New York City. Porno guys got cheap multi-year leases on most of " The Deuce" and surrounding blocks. Formerly unrentable retail stores became "storefront theaters." A plywood partition was built to house the projector, the back wall was painted white or a sheet hung up, a few dozen folding chairs were lined up, and the windows were blacked out. Usually a window had something on it to entice you in - a painted silhouette of a naked woman or a glaring cheap sign, framed out in yellow light bulbs, proclaiming "XXX Movies." Now, After Hours Cinema and yours truly, 42nd Street Pete, are going to give you the storefront theater viewing experience. But we can only show you this collection of classic films, painfully restored from their original grimy elements.

Times Square revisited.......2006-07-13

I saw this film as a teenager and loved it. I bought it hoping it would be as good as I remembered and though some would consider it dated, I still really enjoyed it and had lots of laughs watching it. It still has an excellent thumping soundtrack.

ah, c'mon guys! whomever the powers that be, release the soundtrack already! it's been 25 yrs now, finally got the dvd, and the music was a big part of the film. so much other stuff has been put out that never should have been, but this surely deserves a release.

I Love This Film.......2005-08-16

I must confess up front to a favorable bias toward "Times Square". Just before its release I recall seeing the trailer and being won over by the scene in the hospital where Nikki begins eating the flowers. Since this was only about 10 seconds into the trailer it is fair to say that I immediately connected with the film. The same trailer is included with the DVD and I was happy to see that my memory of the event was accurate. After seeing the actual feature I went out and bought the double album, which I still own.

I know more about films now than I did 25 years ago and thanks to the DVD commentary (by Director Allen Moyle and Robin Johnson-who played Nikki) I now know a lot about what went into the making of "Times Square". Unfortunately Robin's co-star Trini Alvarado (Pammy) was not available for the commentary. Although most viewers consider Nikki the central character, Nikki really needs Pammy to play off (much like Charlize Theron needs Christina Ricci's reaction shots in "Monster"), yet Pammy's scenes without Nikki are some of the best in the film so you can't really say one character is more important than the other.

"Times Square" suffered the same fate that Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons" did 40 years earlier. The producers took control of the final cut, re-shot some scenes, deleted others, and released a version that did not reflect the director's vision. Apparently no one has ever been able to find the deleted footage for either film. Although "Times Square" was butchered even more than "Ambersons", it seems to have been less damaged. In part that is because the originally intended version would never have approached the perfection of the original "Amberson's". Perhaps more importantly, "Times Square" has a Haskel Wexler gritty documentary style that simply transcends the narrative elements of the story. So changes to the storyline could not take away from its basic ambiance nor from its preservation of the look of 1979 Times Square-something that was even then a ghost world.

Moyle now wishes he had not left the production after a dispute over including additional songs (so they could have a double album) because his continued presence would have had some damage control value. Producer Robert Stigwood ("Saturday Night Fever", "Saying Alive", "Jesus Christ Superstar", Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" ) was determined to release yet another of his musical exploitation films designed to make a lot of money on the soundtrack. This accounts for the inclusion of the completely inappropriate "Help Me" (The Bee Gees), the movie actually goes out on that song although they switch to something more appropriate midway through the credits.

The commercialization of the film also included dropping all obvious hints of a lesbian relationship between the two girls. This was probably a commercial mistake because a public controversy might have actually increased attendance. Ironically, if the lesbian angle had remained Moyle would have been accused of exploitation because it is really unnecessary for the storyline. Likewise the script changes needed when Alvarado refused to dance topless saved Moyle from looking like an exploiter.

While what survives has major continuity and character development issues, the core of the story may actually work better. Two emotionally damaged girls-polar opposites- bond and help each other. It ends with Altman's cool "Kansas City" twist where the seemingly weaker girl becomes protective of the tough girl.

I like the way that Pamela's father finally gets it and backs away, letting her continue to help Nikki until she feels that Nikki can continue without her. You first realize how strong and together Nikki has made Pammy by the end of my favorite montage sequence. After ordering her out, Nikki trashes their room, tries unsuccessfully to commit suicide, and completely breaks down at the radio station. Inter-cut with this is a shot of Pammy standing outside her father's home. At the station Nikki is screaming "Pammy" over and over as they agreed to do earlier in the film in moments of total despair. The audio of these screams is extended into the morning after establishing shot of their dock building. Johnny comes into the seemingly empty room and lifts the blanket revealing a peacefully sleeping Pammy sucking her thumb-she has returned to help Nikki.

Another highlight is the scene I already mentioned of Nikki eating the flowers in their hospital room. What makes this work is its point-of-view dynamic. Moyle artfully connects us to Pammy for the first time by allowing us to see Nikki from her POV. Later he places us back into Pammy's POV as Nikki non-verbally convinces Pammy to leave the hospital with her. The hospital exit scene only works credibility-wise because the first scene set us up for it.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

After all these years...what a disappointment!.......2005-08-12

I remember getting the soundtrack to TIMES SQUARE when it came out in 1980, but I never could see the movie cause I was too young - oh well, now on DVD, I can finally watch it after all these years and...what a huge disappointment. While the soundtrack and NYC locations are worth noting, the film itself is an amateur, flat, maudlin mess. All the performances (save for the dependable Tim Curry) are way over the top and shrill. And the "songs" that Robin Johnson "sings" the less said the better - "DAMN DOG"? "TIME BOMB"? And what's with that catchy chorus that goes "N**ger, F*ggot" etc?! HELLO?!! Really awful stuff. Ironically, the COMMMENTARY for the film is actually more entertaining than the movie itself - so watch this DVD with director MOYLE and actress JOHNSON chatting the whole time, fillig in the blanks and explaining just WHY and HOW good intentions didn't add up to a great flick, but rather tedious, tired dreck. I think this was more the fault of soundtrack-hungry producer ROBERT STIGWOOD than anyone else?

The negative reviews in this forum are way too serious.

This is the best teen movie I have ever seen. I saw it 15 years ago and have searched for it in vain in video stores since. Once the internet was born, searches came up with it being deleted. Now there is the DVD.

The performances of the leads are inspired. Nicky must have been the inspiration for Courtney Love!! The music (played at full volume and used as a centerpiece not as background noise) is amazing. The shots of NYC before its disneyfication are haunting.

Suspend your disbelief, and forget what Ebert and others say. This movie is a classic! See it for yourself and decide.

Im a HUGE Johnny Winter fan! iv got a stack of his cd's 6 feet tall! thats why i spent 60 something bucks plus tax and expedited shipping on this disc, i thought for SURE this was going to be a concert from the 70's featuring Johnny at his best, i put the thing on and thats when the NIGHTMARE began..... i swear to god Johnny looked, sounded, and moved, like he was a hundred and fifteen years old, he could NOT play the guitar, and he could NOT sing, i have no idea why he accepted to do that show in the condition he was in, here's what you cant really make out by looking at the cover... he's sitting on a chair... iv NEVER seen him sit at his shows!!! I CURSE THE PEOPLE WHO FIGURED.... "well we can take some great 70's footage and put it on this dvd, or....... we can put THIS show on.......they must of smoked more crack than u can shake a d--k at!!! after i watched this dvd i KNEW being the Johnny fan i am, that i can NEVER watch this again! it is now where it belongs, in the L A city dump! that being said...... if you guys wanna here johnny at his best, BUY A CD CALLED JOHNNY WINTER, GUITAR SLINGER. the BEST guitar power blues album EVER made! I saw Johnny recently in concert. Although his health is not all that great and he walked stooped over and very slow there is nothing wrong with his fingers or his voice. This recording was obviously made when he wasnot feeling well and possibly heavily medicated. Other musicians had to carry the load for him. When I saw him he was with a bass player and drummer and Johnny carried himslf just fine. Don't buy this DVD. Go to his show instead. And "yes" he is still touring!!

Still Alive and Well.......2006-09-11

I am shocked by a few of the other reviews blasting one of the greatest blues guitarest ever, becasue he is old now and has had many health problams. I seen Johnny 9-10-06 at a blues fest, and it was sad to see that he was as crippled up as he is, broken hip, going blind,and quite frail, but he still played the hell out of that ol guitar, and his slide work is better than anyones out there. He is a Blues man so if you are looking for footage of his rock days, don't get this, Johnny was a rocker by default, his real core is that of a bluesman. to state that you should dispose of anyone because of age is crappy at best. Johnny still commands the stage and respect of a veteran bluesman. His newest alblum has been nomanated for a grammy. So those neg. reviews are way off the mark. I have been a fan of his for over 30 years now. He is one of the greatest blues guitarist ever, and can still play circles around most of the guys out there today. If you are looking for rock stuff of his don't by this dvd, but if you are a blues fan, you will really enjoy it. It is sad that he is as crippled up as he is, albino's do not usally fair well in the health area, but as a guitarist and a blues man, he is still a power to be recconded with

i can't understand how anyone who has johnny winters best interest at heart would release a concert that does not show johnny in a good light. his longtime health problems become more of a focus on this dvd than the music which is a shame.

I've just visited a friend of mine who told me he'd got this Johnny Winter DVD as a birthday present. Although having been a fan since 1969, when listening to Johnny B. Goode on German radio had blown me away, I had been reluctant to watch this one, due to the fact that in 2003 he hadn't appeared on a scheduled show in Ulm in Southern Germany, and the newspapers revealed he had "taken the money and run". But watching this DVD was one of the saddest experiences in my life. My anger had given way to indescribable pity. His catastrophic health situation made me feel awfully sad, nothing left anymore, his voice gone, his guitar playing on an amateur level, with a shaking right hand and knee. Who are those contemptible vultures making money out of this? If you're a Johnny Winter fan, don't watch this DVD, and certainly don't buy it! It will make you feel sick. Instead, watch his 1980 appearance on German Rockpalast and remember him as one of the greatest blues virtuosos ever. THIS DVD is completely superfluous!
