For people who've discovered Jackie Chan through his American hit Rush Hour and want to learn what his Hong Kong movies are like, Project A is an excellent place to start. Chan plays a sailor in 19th-century Hong Kong; pirates have been terrorizing the seas for months, and all efforts to combat them have been sabotaged by the corrupt chief of police and a criminal gang, who are in cahoots with the pirates. But the plot is hardly the point--a Jackie Chan movie is about astonishingly acrobatic action sequences and breathtaking stunts, and Project A has plenty. Of particular interest is a bicycle chase that is more suspenseful than any car chase you've ever seen. Chan is joined by Sammo Hung (star of TV's Martial Law) as a shifty con man who comes through when the chips are down. Project A also features Yuen Biao, a frequent costar in Chan's movies, who's yet another astounding martial artist. But what separates Jackie Chan movies from other kung fu flicks is his sense of humor; every fight scene is punctuated by something--a clever use of a prop or sudden reversal of your expectations--that will make you bark with laughter. Sometimes it's just so exquisitely choreographed that the entire movie seems to float on a cloud of giddy delight. Purists may object to the movie being dubbed, but given the overall hamminess of the acting, it's not particularly intrusive. Jackie Chan is often compared to the classic silent comedians for his grace and timing--he lives up to it. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Great action, bad acting.......2007-04-02

I know not to expect great dialogue or Academy-worthy performances from Jackie's Hong Kong movies, and this one meets expectations. The story is not bad but the original acting is pretty bad, even before it was dubbed. That said, it still is a worthwhile view. The action scenes are top-notch, and Jackie's humor is evident throughout. Sammo Hung puts in a good performance and the chemistry between him and Jackie works. The final fight scene is very entertaining. If you like Jackie's Chinese movies, you'll appreciate this one. If you've only seen him in his American releases, you may be disappointed in the acting and production.

1 out of 5 stars Review of New Media/CineVu release.......2007-03-07

This is a review of the New Media/Cinevu release, not the dubbed Dimension one.

Do not buy this movie - this product should be pulled immediately as it seems to be an incomplete bootleg not even containing the whole movie. That should be sufficient warning there, but if you must know why, read on.

I was hesitant at first to buy this DVD, as all other reviews - both good and bad - seem to be of the Deimnsion version. I'm not sure why these two seperate products are linked to the same page for comments, but they are.

In short, this DVD is horrible. The only good thing is that it is in the original language - unfortunately, the subtitles - both Chinese and English - are hard coded into the screen, so you have to deal with both subtitles being up there. Secondly, the transfer is atrocious - so bad, in fact, that the hardcoded subtitles are so blurred its virtually impossible to read them (that's not even including the very small font used). The bad transfer also applies to the picture in general, giving it a low quality that makes the worst of TV show DVDs look like painted masterpieces.

There are no bonuses, sound options, or in fact any menus. The set up is bare minimum and the presentation so horrid that I feel as if I paid 15$ for a bootleg from Amazon, and I would not be surprised if in fact this IS a bootleg, as I can find no information on this New Media company or even this release of the DVD outside of Amazon.

But somehow, for some reason, I bore through this to continue on with the movie. Taking great effort I could make out the subtitles and grimey picture enough just to realize that the movie ends at 47 minutes - in an hour and a half movie. So not only is the transfer horrible, but it is incomplete, literally cutting off in the middle of the movie. This isn't a criticism about the editing, mind you, but the DVD actually just suddenly ends as if they didn't bother to burn the entire movie onto the DVD.

I will be emailing Amazon about this shortly, but I must urge all people to avoid this DVD, the reasons being clear - you aren't even getting the movie you paid for, its literally not all the way on the disc.

4 out of 5 stars DVD isn't a total loss, but it is still bad.......2006-10-03

So Dimension films was really at their peak of releasing some of the worst DVD's ever at this time. The problem with Dimension home videe is that they NEVER put an original language track on their DVD's. So the dubbing is bad enough but they put in some stupid freaking music replacing the original soundtrack. So obviously seek out an original verison of this because the only thing going for this DVD is the pictue quality. It is also nicely widscreened. Also listen for the Jack Hawkins sound alike.

So if you can get past all if the horrible voices and inferior music that Dimension has put in, get ready to see the greatest stunt movie ever. For it's time there is no doubt this was the greatest but even 23 years later this is possibly still the best.

Jackie plays an officer of the coastguard and has to deal with pirates in this movie. This is proabbly the best movie from the 3 brothers- Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, and Sammo Hung. The chemistry between the 3 is awesome and their great peking opera skills are in full display. The final fight is by far Dick Wei's finest hour and with the 3 brothers fighting him, this is just a dream match that you can see where the final fight in a movie like Eastern Condors came from.

Also watch for maybe the most dangerous stunt ever. Jackie falls off of a clock tower and drops at least 50 feet to the ground. If you watch it when they show the replay, it is actually a diffrerent take! Jackie wanted to make sure he had 2 shots of his fall so that he could have as many camera angles as possible and insisted on doing this death defying stunt twice!!! You can see in the movie that they actually show us both landings. Name me another actor that is willing to die for his audience. How can you not love Jackie?

4 out of 5 stars great!!!.......2005-09-22

another good movie by jackie chan.. great stunts and fighting..
look for the scene where jackie falls off a clock tower!! damn the man is crazy.. the movie may be outdated..but this is one jackie chan was at his best..he could literally almost do anything..i mean the man throws himself everywhere in this movie!

4 out of 5 stars one of his best..but not the best.......2005-08-08

I guess this movie is really dated..and looks really old,,but still the action in this is amazing,,from the gangsters joint..to the bycycle chase..and all the way to the pirates hide out..u should check out the last scene..where JC fights the main villain in the Pirate hide out...dang!! i gotta tell u..thats one of the best fights ever captured on film..jus amazing..the fights seems swift, flawless..really fast paced...another scene that was great was the gangsters crib..that was amazing too..Jackie literally throws himself in this scene..well enuff wit tha braggn jus chek it out urself..and ifu can buy the Hong Kong version..its less cheesy and it has more scenes..anyway great buy as long as u keep this movie under $10 ur alright...its not as good as other JC films like the best.. "DRUNKEN MASTER. THE LEGEND OF DRUNKEN MASTER, POLICE STORY 1 & 2..WHO AM I? ...but still its a must have,,,anyways im out....peace

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great follow up to Project A.......2007-04-29

David Lam stars as a crooked cop and Jackie is sent in to work alongside him so he can eventually take him down. He has a lot of cleaning up to do in his new district and starts with Chan Wei Man and his gang. The movie is slow going, but there are tons of hilarious scenes that keep things moving along. The plot finally kicks into gear when we find out Maggie Cheung and Rosamund Kwan's plans. This movie is your standard Jackie vs. everybody scenario. There is also a gang of pirates after Jackie because he killed their leader at the end of Project A.

While there are no lengthy 1 on 1 matches, the action is all very good and also has a big emphasis on comedy. There are a couple of very long drawn out comic sequences, but it always ends in a big payoff. Thanks to the comedy, the movie moves along at a good pace. Make sure not to blink early on because there is a 5 second exchange between Jackie Chan and Chan Wei Man that is amazing. The stuntwork is superb. Just don't go into this expecting anything that comes close to matching the 3 on 1 final fight or the clocktower stunt from the first Project A. There is a nice 10 minute sequence towards the end that is filled with crazy stunts and also a few fights. Not his best, but definitely one of Jackie Chan's better movies.

On top of the names already given, the cast also includes Mars, Bill Tung, Fan Mei-Sheng, Ken Lo, Ben Lam, John Chiang, Lee Hoi San and Tiet Wo Chu. Ken Lo and Ben Lam unfortunately don't get in on the action.

4/5

The DVD from Dimension Video is not cut very much and the original music is intact, but the British dubbing gets extremely annoying. Picture quality is very good and perfectly widescreened.

1 out of 5 stars Stick with Original.......2004-02-23

Why American production make HK movies look so cheap? First of all, they cut off so much scene, second of all ruin it by making look acting so dumb by English Dubb. ALWAYS stick with ORIGINAL LICENSED HK RELEASE. Be careful with cheap imports, boots though.

5 out of 5 stars Project A2 - twice as great!.......2004-01-20

I had seen Project A many times, so when, seeing Project A2 for the first time, was expecting more of the same (I also gave Project A five stars as well - how can anyone go wrong with a Jackie Chan film?!?!?!). But Project A2, IMHO, is much better, with more action and more amazing stunts (too bad I can't give it 6 stars!!). I have the subtitled version, and I've always liked those versions better, rather than the dubbed versions.

Don't think twice - get this movie (especially if you can find the subtitled version!!!).

4 out of 5 stars Better than I expected... the DVD, that is..........2003-05-24

Alright... I'm keeping myself anonymous as I've been against Dimension Films' treatment of pretty much all Hong Kong imports, yet this release wasn't as bad... First off, I'm not sure if the print was cut at all, but at least the run time was over 100 min. Yes, this version has a new dub created by Dimension, HOWEVER, it has retained the original Hong Kong score. I don't believe Dimension has ever done this. The only thing close to this was the opposite with "Iron Monkey" in which the Cantonese track had been retained, but the music had changed. Also, the score was blasting in 5.1 surround sound, no less. And even the original sound effects were kept and with very good bass coming from the subwoofer. As for the picture, it looked almost like a brand new film. It might not've hit the standards of the Region 2 company "Hong Kong Legends", but was still highly impressive. As for extras... this is where it falls flat on its face... NOTHING! Also, I had feared that Dimension would chop out the outtakes since Jackie is seen singing in Cantonese in the original version, yet it was left in! Unfortunately, Dimension was too lazy to get subtitles for it. Well, it looks like Dimension may be getting closer to getting things right... but not until they release a Hong Kong film on DVD UNCUT and with BOTH English and Cantonese/Mandarin audio tracks. If Disney/Miramax, can take Japanese anime films ("Spirited Away", "Castle in the Sky", etc.) and give them high-class two disc releases, then why not Hong Kong live action films? They'd sell better that way as well. All we can do is wait... but it's getting harder and harder to hold my breath. As for this DVD... if you can find it for a decent price or you have a gift card and can't find anything else, it's actually worth the purchase. But, if you want original language over video quality, I guess you'll have to find the Mega Star Hong Kong DVD... either way, IT'S UP TO YOU!!

5 out of 5 stars Project A 2 (1985).......2002-11-12

This film is just as good as it's previous one. A hialarious scene is when Jackie was fighting the bad guys he had to eat REAL red hot chillies, spit the juice into his hands and rub the juice onto the bad guys eyes'. The plot is quite simiar to the other one but don't worry it's still is a real treat!

Product Description

Jackie Chan as a Robbers, babysitter, a kidnapper with a randsom and headaches.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars (3.5 STARS) Jackie Chan's "Three Men and a Baby" with Several Very Good Stunts.......2007-04-09

"Rob-B-Hood" ("Bo bui gai wak") features the misadventures of three ne'er-do-wells Fong (Jackie Chan), Octopus (Louis Koo) and Landlord (Michael Hui), to whom a new job is assigned from a mobster on the worst day of their lives. That lucrative job involved kidnapping a baby, but because of their slight mistakes gambling bachelor Fong and lady's man Octopus are forced to take care of the baby on their own.

"Rob-B-Hood" is a Jackie Chan film, which means it contains actions. Though the film has several above-average action sequences, Chan and director Benny Chan (who helmed Jackie's "Who Am I?" and "New Police Story") is more interested in character-driven dramas. Consequently the film's middle part slows down considerably with subplots about Jackie Chan and Louis Koo's characters, both of whom act out of selfishness at first, and then begin to behave like mother and father to the kidnapped baby. The plot is predictable and overlong, and you may say these non-action sequences could be left out in the finished version, but the drama part is not bad as you may think. (By the way, the episode about the illness of Fong's father is part based on the real-life event that happened to Jackie's own mother, and this may explain his acting which is more intense than usual.

It is amazing to see Jackie Chan (52 years old, remember?) is still nimble and doing stunts himself, but at the same time the obvious use of special effects in some actions may be disappointing to some fans. This is not to say his stunts are not dangerous - see the end credit bloopers, and you know it - but well-choreographed as they are, action sequences could have been much better with new ideas like more original use of props.

Comic thesp Michael Hui is always funny, and Louis Koo shows some wonderful action stunts. "Rob-B-Hood" also stars familiar faces in Hong-Kong films such as Yuen Biao, cute Charlene Choi, plus lovely Yuanyuan Gao from mainland China. Many cameo appearances from Hong Kong film industry would also delight the fans, but the greatest scene stealer of the film is of course, Matthew Medvedev or Baby Matthew, who actually is nominated as Hong Kong Film Award's Best New Performer.

"Rob-B-Hood" is a quite entertaining popcorn movie with great set-pieces. There is nothing new storywise, but it delivers with its real stars, thrilling actions and the adorable baby

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-02-21

If you're expecting tons of fights and crazy stunts then you probably won't like this movie. It's toned down alot compared to his movies from the 80's and 90's and there is some noticable wire-work (which is common in alot of his new movies) but he is getting up there, pushing 53. I think he's earned the right to use wires because alot of the stuff that's done with the wires is stuff that he could have easily done when he was younger and less-injuried.
Anyways, the movie itself is very refreshing compared to hollywood movies which populate north america. I know that the whole "men taking care of baby" act has been done before and I'm sure you're thinking this is just another one of those movies, but I was surprised to find that it isn't. It's unique and the story has surprising depth to it. The advertising for this movie is kind of misleading with the baby dressed up in different outfits and styles for the cute factor but in reality the movie isn't as crazy as the cover art and posters portray it to be. It is a more of an upbeat movie, but it isn't over the top silly.
The movie has a bunch of emotional scenes that I thought, made the movie stand out from the average baby-comedies out there.
It's a long movie (the extended cut at 2 hours and 15 minutes) but it didn't really seem to drag on at all. I'd recommend this to any Jackie Chan fan that isn't expecting insane action from his past, but don't worry there are a few fight scenes and stunts to satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars I like this movie!!.......2007-02-05

Jackie Chen's movie always make me happy. this movie make my family laugh, even my 2 years old daughter.

2 out of 5 stars A big step back for Jackie Chan.......2007-01-21

After regaining some of the ground he lost in Hollywood with his last couple of Hong Kong films, Jackie Chan takes a big step backwards with the overlong Rob-B-Hood, a downmarket three bad men and a baby romp that offers limp gay jokes, comic relief mental illness, family bonding and child endangerment for all the family. There is one fairly good action sequence at the halfway point as well as a neat stunt that sees him jumping down a building via the air conditioning units, but you definitely get the feeling that Chan's no longer pushing himself but is just doing what he knows he can still do while Yuen Biao is mostly wasted in a nothing bit part. He's made worse, but that's hardly a recommendation.

The 2-disc set includes both the theatrical and extended festival cut of the film, both with audio commentary subtitled in English. There's also a huge variety of deleted scenes, trailers, featurettes and music videos (mostly subtitled in English), but the film is such heavy going you quite possibly won't want to spend any longer on it once you've seen it.

        4 out of 5 stars great!!!.......2005-09-22

another good movie by jackie chan.. great stunts and fighting..
look for the scene where jackie falls off a clock tower!! damn the man is crazy.. the movie may be outdated..but this is one jackie chan was at his best..he could literally almost do anything..i mean the man throws himself everywhere in this movie!

also look out for project A 2 and police story 1 and 2..
