TV chef Jackie Chan is involuntarily involved in a gang war between stereotypical Italians and punkers right out of A Clockwork Orange. Most of the cast is in a coma, and the plot is stupid, stupid, stupid. The reason to watch this is for Chan's gravity-defying stunts as he is chased through the streets of Melbourne by Aussie thugs trying to relocate missing cocaine. Chan is so innovative with his tricks that it is a shame he doesn't work with more intelligent material. Still, his fans should enjoy this slight adventure, as Chan's carefully choreographed martial art moves are as awesome as ever. Watch for a stunt involving a horse-drawn carriage, as it almost compensates for the lackluster story line. --Rochelle O'Gorman

As with many of his films, Jackie Chan relies more on stunts and action than story in Mr. Nice Guy. The movie contains mostly stunts like Rumble in The Bronx & First Strike and not so much in the way of one on one fights such as Who Am I and Legend of Drunken Master.

Jackie Chan plays "Jackie Chan", famous tv chef located in Melbourne, Australia, where the movie pretty much all takes place in. He becomes the "Nice Guy" by helping out a female reporter escape from Gene Carter (Richard Norton) and his gang of goons. She accidentally leaves her videotape of one of Gene's illegal business deals with Jackie, and that's when Jackie becomes entangled in the mess throughout the rest of the movie.

Several highlights in this film include Richard Norton, who plays the bad guy boss, like in many of his movies. There is a funny cameo from Sammo Hung, who also directed Mr. Nice Guy. There are tons and tons of chase/stunt scenes featuring Jackie. The best is one of the last scene at a construction sight. Another good but small one is on the street. A Pepsi truck overturns, looses all the cans of soda, and Jackie and a goon are fighting it out in thousands of exploding cans of soda. The final scene in the movie involves Jackie driving a MASSIVE construction vehicle through Gene's "cheap-looking" mansion. Really cool, though you can kinda tell its a cardboard set. Oh yeah, and his sports car collection gets crushed too. Oh, and the dubbing on the film is rather done well too.

I miss a really good fight scene the most from this movie, but the stunts make up for it. If you enjoy Rumble In The Bronx, First Strike or Supercop, Mr. Nice Guy needs to be added to the collection.

Not Jackie's best movie.......2007-01-31

So, why is this tv chef such a tough guy anyway? I enjoyed this movie, but the plot wasn't that interesting, and none of the bad guys seemed to be all that tough, so the fights were just all Jackie. Even with Jackie's hands and legs tied, the big boss presents no challenge to Jackie. Stunts were okay, like Jackie hanging from a doorknob at a construction site. Overall, though, this movie doesn't have anything that would make me say it was anywhere near his best movie.

ORIGINAL IS BETTER.......2006-02-05

If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL

Great humor and acting!!.......2005-12-23

Ow, of all the Jackie Chan movies I own, this is certainly one of the best. The way he fights always is very funny, and ofcourse, Richard Norton does a great job on this one playing Giancarlo. Giancarlo is the coolest and funniest mafia boss I've ever seen in a movie. I'll tell you what the story is about:
It's about gangs which have a problem with business, and then they see people filming them. Ofcourse they don't like that, and they start chasing them. The man was shot, the girl ran away with the tape, and then she ran to Jackie, and then he gets in trouble. It's very funny, it's not longwinded although it's more than 50% chasing and fighting. Jackie plays a very skilled cook, and the funniest thing is, he doesn't know anything about why the gangs want him.
I really like this movie. I shall say, if you want to have a good laugh, buy Mr. NiceGuy, sit back, and most importantly, enjoy.
Keep On Rocking!!!!!!!!!

Worth it just to see Chan almost get buzzsawed........2005-06-10

This isn't Chan's best film, but he's made so many, that's not really saying anything. Nearly every film he's ever made is worth seeing if only to enjoy his acrobatic madness.

The plot for Mr. Nice Guy would fill a postage stamp, but who watches these for plot? They're always just a thinly veiled excuse for some brilliant action sequences. And this movie is full of them. They're not exceptionally creative by Chan's standards, but they're still lovingly executed and a joy to behold. I just wish there was one last fight instead of the dumptruck ending, though it is kind of cool to watch stuff getting crushed.

Jackie Chan finally conquered America with Rumble in the Bronx (1995). With his disarming smile and feline physicality, the compact Chan radiates star quality. But there's more to him than charisma: at his best, the actor combines the relentlessly escalating, hyperkinetic action set-pieces for which Hong Kong is famous; the rigorous martial arts training of his idol, Bruce Lee; and the grace and daring that distinguish Buster Keaton's physical comedy. Not that it matters, really, but the plot of Rumble in the Bronx has something to do with Chan helping the woman who has taken over his uncle's neighborhood market when she is harassed by local hoodlums. What really matters is Chan, and he's in fine form.

Chan does his best James Bond impression with First Strike (1996), an ecstatic sequel to the classic Supercop. The bare-bones plot has him in pursuit of international terrorists, but the narrative quickly gives way to an unceasing barrage of insane stunt work (including a nitro-fueled ski chase and a grandiose fight scene set inside a functioning shark tank). As with most of the aging star's recent films, there is more of an emphasis placed on big, impersonal (albeit impressive) stunts rather than the close-up combat that made him famous; but the end result is still a must-see rush for longtime fans, and a great introduction for newcomers eager to see what all the well-deserved fuss is about.

Mr. Nice Guy and First Strike are both excellent movies to watch and get at [local store] if you can't get it here!

This action pack could contain Shanghai Noon instead of Rumble in the Bronx. Opt-out for Rumble in the Bronx since it is Hong Kong style...meaning you will have to deal with foreign language spoken while someone in English interprets. Kind of weird if you ask me. It is like Drunken Master where you have to listen carefully.

A Great Look At Wrestling History..........2001-07-09

Wrestling Gold Collection 4: No More Mr. Nice Guy, part IV of a V part series, collects vintage wrestling matches from the 1970s and 1980s. This particular volume contains 12 matches.

The biggest sell of this DVD series is the optional "Insider Commentary" (from Select Audio screen) from series hosts Jim Cornette (noted wrestling manager/promoter) and Dave Meltzer (noted wrestling journalist) which can be turned on in lieu of the original match audio. The insider commentary offers great insights into wrestling history, the superstars and the world of wrestling in general.

Though this collection is referred to as "Wrestling Gold" perhaps a better name for this particularly volume would have been "The Best of Memphis Wrestling" which is where most of these matches were pulled from. Here's a rundown of the featured matches on this volume:

1. Randy "Macho Man" Savage (w/ Angelo Poffo) vs. Rick Rude (w/ Jimmy Hart): Early 80s Memphis. Both men went on to SUPER stardom as both are multi-time heavyweight champions. Okay match. Big stall-fest. King Kong Bundy run-in. 3 stars.

2. Andre the Giant vs. The Sheik (w/ Abdullah Farouk AKA The Grand Wizard): Toronto, 1974. Great seeing Andre in his prime. Both men were huge legends in this sport. The Sheik, in particular, was a legend in Toronto, known today as "Sabu's uncle." One-sided squash for Andre notable for the "fiery finish." 3 stars.

3. Pampero Firpo vs. Jeff Doney: Firpo was an Argentine also known as the "Wild Bull of the Pampas" who teamed up with the Sheik. Squash match. 3 stars.

4. Bruiser Brody and Scott Casey vs. Kelly Kiniski and the Spoiler: San Antonio, early 80s. Brody was the legendary Brawler. Casey and the Spoiler were mainstays in Texas wrestling. Casey went on to achieve VERY mild success in the late 80s WWF. Kiniski is the son of former NWA champion Gene Kiniski. Great mat classic in this match. 4 stars.

5. Jerry "The King" Lawler and Randy "Macho Man" Savage vs. King Kong Bundy and Rick Rude: Memphis, 1985. Star-studded tag match featuring 4 modern-day legends of the sport. AWESOME tag match showing Lawler and Savage at their best. 4 ¾ stars.

6. Chief Jay Strongbow vs. Don Kent: Early 70s. Shark Cage match. Strongbow was a legend throughout the Northeast in the 70s. Don Kent was one half of the Fabulous Kangaroos. Interesting match that took place in a VERY mobility limiting shark cage. Definitely NOT something you see everyday. Mark Lewin run-in. 5 stars just because it's something unique.

7. Randy "Macho Man" Savage vs. Austin Idol: Memphis, early 80s for the International title. Idol was a Memphis legend and a big star throughout the South. Savage at his finest. AWESOME match. 5 stars.

8. Terrible Ted the Wrestling Bear vs. Gene DuBois: from the 50s/60s. Wrestling bears (yes, REAL bears) were big draws during the 50s/60s/70s. This match is a special treat. While it is NOT a great classic, it is definitely a great novelty to see. The ref gets in on the action too!!! 5 stars.

9. Rick Rude (w/ Angel) vs. Tommy Rich (w/ Tojo Yamamoto): Memphis, early 80s for the Southern Heavyweight title. Tommy Rich was a former NWA Heavyweight champion and big star throughout the South. A pretty decent match notable for one HORRIBLY blown spot. Lawler run-in. 4 stars.

10. Jerry "The King" Lawler vs. Nick Bockwinkle (champ): Memphis 1983 for the AWA Heavyweight title. Another 5 star classic for Bockwinkle. AWESOME old-school match with great back and forth action. 5 stars.

11. Randy "Macho Man" Savage vs. Austin Idol: Memphis '84. Another great match with these two. Too bad it had a cheap finish. 4 stars.

12. Bobby Heenan (w/ Blackjack Mulligan and Lanza) vs. Cowboy Bob Ellis: Vintage Bobby Heenan trying to squeak out of a match. Ellis with the beat down on everyone. DUD.

Wrestling wise, this is a GREAT DVD. Here's my rundown:

Price of Admission Alone: The novelty of the Bear match and the GREAT action with Lawler/Bockwinkle and Savage/Idol and also seeing Andre in his prime.

Awesome: The "Insider Match Commentary." It's a fascinating listen/insight into the stars and the business. You'll learn a GREAT deal about the history of the business and the stars that made it. Also, many of the anecdotes that Cornette shares are PRICELESS.

Good: Seeing all the old-school superstars (Savage, Andre, Bundy, the Blackjacks, Heenan, etc).

Whoa: Where'd the biographies go????

Could Improve: The match intros by Cornette and Meltzer. They do a good job of introducing the matches and placing them in context of the feuds and time, BUT they neglect to mention important details (for most) such as the DATES of these contests. It's something they should mention, plus also put on the box. To get this basic info you'll have to listen with "Insider Commentary" turned on.

Unforgiveable: Misprint on the box. Match 9 (Funk/Putski vs. Hernandez/Blanchard) was NOT on this volume, but rather volume I.

Overall, this is a great DVD if you are into old-school style matches and stars. The matches in this volume are great!!! You'll get a good mix of scientific (Lawler/Bockwinkle), (Savage/Idol), hardcore (Strongbow/Kent), etc. There's something for everyone. Plus, you'll see legends like Andre the Giant, the wrestling bear, the Sheik, and Chief Jay Strongbow and even contemporary favorites who are no longer with us (Rude, Bruiser Brody, etc). If you are a wrestling nostalgist THIS IS FOR YOU. Definitely give this a watch. You'll see many of the older stars of today back in their prime or as rookies. Also, you'll get to see some of the legends that older fans always reminisce about. Plus, if you want a great lesson in wrestling history, listen to it in "Insider Commentary" mode. It's a fascinating listen.

These movies are great examples of why Jackie Chan films are so popular. They are short on plot and long on action. The fight sequences are amazing. The video and sound quality of the dvd are superb. These are very entertaining movies. Just right for sitting down on a Saturday night with a bowl of popcorn. You don't want to think too much and can just sit back and enjoy the show.

This is the only film that I've seen by the comedian Mike McDonald. His character's girlfriend finds out that he's a hit man and makes him promise to never use weapons again, so he must come up with creative ways to continue to do his job while keeping his promise. A must see for fans of off-beat humor and creativity.

Product Description

Melbourne, Australia. TV Journalist Diana tapes evidence against drug lord Giancarlo, but on her way away from the scene, she is spotted and has to run. In the street, she runs into TV cook Jackie, whose knowledge of martial arts helps her survive the threat.
