This documentary features two programs. First, "St. Clare of Assisi" reveals the extraordinary life of St. Clare, a woman who reached the highest summits of Christian mysticism, who knew how to defend her decisions alone and who built a social reality that still challenges the centuries.Along with medieval harmonies composed by Oscar-winning musicians, the exquisite photography explores all of the sacred places in and around Assisi that characterize the life of Clare and that of Francis. The testimony of a Poor Clare in the 40-minute documentary, moreover, exemplifies the figure of Clare in today's world.
The second program, included as a bonus, is "Poor Clares: A Hidden Presence." More than twenty thousand woman today follow the example of Clare of Assisi in monasteries scattered throughout the world--the cloistered convent, a city in prayer and a hidden presence with a love without reserve for all of humanity. The Poor Clares present in this 30-minute documentary speak of their realization as women, mothers and sisters inside the closed walls of a monastery.

Description
In this unique film, viewers are given a guided tour of the town of Assisi by Saint Francis himself. St. Francis's "narration" is rendered by Christopher Jones.Francis was born in the late 12th Century, the son of a rich merchant. He was raised as a young Assisian nobleman, but grew dissatisfied with his life, and in his twenties he publicly renounced his father's wealth and turned to prayer and service to the poor. Francis began to live as a hermit and preached the necessity of a poor, simple lifestyle based on the ideals of the Gospels. Later in life he received the Stigmata, and composed his famous poem, the Canticle of Brother Sun. He died on October 3, 1226 and was canonized in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX.
The tour visits all the sites in Assisi that played a significant role in the life of Saint Francis. Assisi's spiritual and mystical dimension, and its artistic and cultural heritage are explored, including its winding medieval streets, its squares, and its festivals. The video is a rich source of information for anyone planning to visit Assisi.

During the Second World War, racist laws in Italy forced thousands of Jews to flee their cities in search of safe haven. A few hundred of these refugees, facing dangerous obstacles along the way, reached Assisi, the city of St. Francis. Even with the city under German occupation, all of those who came to Assisi were saved. Under secret orders by Pope Pius XII to do all that was humanly possible to save the Jews, the Bishop of Assisi, Mons. Giuseppe Placido Nicolini, began the operation that would open up monasteries and convents to hide the persecuted. Priests, nuns, the town's mayor, and many of Assisi's citizens all worked together in this hidden network. With interviews of some of those directly involved, historical footage of the era, and Pope John Paul II's message from Assisi to "walk the paths of peace," this inspirational story is told.
