Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
The disaster-movie trend of the early and mid-1970s was starting to wear out its welcome when Earthquake was released in 1974. It's another one of those enjoyably mindless all-star marathons, and the title tells you all you need to know about the plot. Charlton Heston offers his trademark brand of macho courage as the citizens of Los Angeles brace for the Big One--an earthquake that rattles the city to its crumbling foundation. It's got all the sophistication of a Love Boat episode, but the movie's momentum scores high marks (at least on the Richter scale), and the Oscar-winning sound design and special visual effects are still impressive, especially when you consider that advanced computer-graphics effects were still two decades in the future. Genevieve Bujold adds a touch of class to the all-star ensemble, and of course, what self-respecting disaster flick would be complete without a role for George Kennedy? In more ways than one, this cheesy movie rocks! (If you want to re-create the movie's original sound process known as "Sensurround," you'll just have to crank up the bass and subwoofer on your home theater system until plaster cracks and windows shatter!) --Jeff Shannon

This 1988 animated feature from Don Bluth (An American Tail) focuses on an orphaned young dinosaur, Littlefoot, who has to make his way to the paradise of the Great Valley in order to survive a plague. Along the way, he meets up with some other dinos from different species, and they all bond and travel together. On the way, they have plenty of adventures. Even with elements of suspense, this is a pretty relaxed movie that isn't in a particular hurry to roll out its story. Kids will like the originality of the concept, and the themes of friendship and cooperation are well woven into the fabric of the entertainment, plus the music is great. Bluth's artwork looks good, though--as always--he never seems to quite catch up with the quality of the Disney machine. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Land Before Time DVD.......2007-05-20

As cute and charming as it was when it was first released in the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars Touching movie snif snif.........2007-05-14

Well this movie is exellent for kids and for grown ups like me, very touching teaching the values of frienship, honesty etc. Although it says subtitles only in spanish and french, as a sourprise.. it came with english subtitles also.
Now, talking about quality.. no 5 stars there, it has the same exact quality as the original VHS one.. meaning.. VERY POOR! You can tell miles away that it is a movie from the 80's as this is an Anniversary edition i thought they were going to renew some scenes and make it more "new" but nothing.. same bad quality

5 out of 5 stars my girls can't get enough of Little Foot! .......2007-03-31

My (almost)3 and 5 yr old girls love these movies. this is the favorite of course, being the first one. I don't mind watching it again and again with them. good lessons.

5 out of 5 stars The Land Before Time.......2007-03-24

My son is just getting into dinosaurs, he loves the movie Land Before Time. The part where the mother dies made him sad though, he related it to me and told me he did not want me to go away! We have not watched it as much as other DVD's he has, but it may be a little too mature for him. I do like how he has learned a few of the terms and names of the types of dinosaurs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2007-03-23

Must see this original movie that started it all first. My three year old son loves this movie. He wanted to keep watching it over and over again. He loves the sing-a-long songs!

Amazon.com essential video

Kurt Russell reprises his role as Snake Plissken, of the near-future thriller Escape from New York, in this reworking of that film's basic premise. Instead of New York being a maximum-security prison, this time it's L.A., which through the agency of earthquakes has become an island of the damned. This penal colony is where the film's future rulers, something very like the Moral Majority, send those deemed guilty of "moral crimes." But something has gone wrong in this new moral order, because the President's daughter has absconded to L.A. with a detonation device, and Snake is commandeered to retrieve it. The film's dark dystopia, with its satrical elements taking aim at our dwindling freedoms, and the eclipsing of democracy by narrow interests, are more the subject this time. As a result the action suffers, and the plot devices are sometimes weak and predictable. But just below the surface there is a coiled Snake ready to strike. Steve Buscemi's performance as a weasely hawker of L.A. tour maps is a standout, and the presence of Peter Fonda and Pam Grier adds to the fun. In fact, just the sight of Fonda surfing down the flooded corridor of Sunset Boulevard is reason enough to check this movie out. --Jim Gay

1 out of 5 stars THE REDUX.......2007-06-19

A REGRETTABLE FILM,WE NEED TO FORGET IT !AND PRETEND THIS ONE WAS A BAD DREAM.

2 out of 5 stars Remake, not a sequel........2007-05-18

Although it was very entertaining seeing Russell reprise his Plissken character, the movie itself was a letdown. Same scenario: Snake captured, injected w/ life-threatening drug, forced to perform for the president, infiltrating former US metropolis that now houses the country's undesirables, escapes just in time, mission accomplished, gets last word, the end. The only thing that was different from its predecessor was the addition of cheesy special effects and campy scenes (Snake on a surfboard, anyone ? Gimme a break!) If this was meant to be some kind of parody of the first film (which is, obviously, farrrrr superior), then Carpenter and Russell succeeded. What were they thinking ??

2 out of 5 stars The Snake Man Cometh............2007-01-08

Okay, the rating above is not going to be liked but I have to be truthful.

The only good thing going for this movie was the return of "Snake Plissken".

This film's plot was essentially a rehash of the original "Escape From New York"...A bit more special effects (which in fact, did not make this a better movie)...

When I go to a sequel I expect to get what I paid for a totally new adventure with the same character / characters.

Kurt Russell's character is older and even more in the know of what the rewards are before he is offered them.

Obviously the movie doesn't really know where it's going as it takes two scenes (15 minutes of the film) (1st scene - President, Commandant, and Lackey give Snake the mission) (2nd scene - Commandant and Lackey brief Snake before he leaves for the mission) to explan to the audience what's the basic conflict.

I guess either Carpenter or Russell are just getting too old to take a GREAT leap and recount either an earlier Snake Plissken adventure or an adventure well worth telling..

I also wish to comment that this disc has no special features besides a movie trailer...
"Carpenter....Russell! " Please don't tell me "money" caused you to revisit a "cult figure"!

Some redeeming qualities are the acting performances of Cliff Robertson, Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, and Pam Grier. Robertson, Keach, and Grier may be old but they can sure make you believe in their characters!

Sorry, Snake...."I don't love L.A."

The-Big-Green-Pointy-Eared-One!

1 out of 5 stars wrong. .......2007-01-06

Peter Fonda and Kurt Russell surfing a wave down a Los Angeles reservoir is not cool, does not make this movie worth a look, good God, that scene stinks. P-U. Campy. This movie is a mess. A horribly made sequel. So bad it actually tarnishes the reputation of the original.

In Search of the Castaways was Hayley Mills's third feature for Disney, an agreeable adventure--loosely based on a Jules Verne story--with enough derring-do to make kids happy and with the right touch of self-conscious silliness to keep adults smiling. Mills plays Mary Grant, a missing freighter captain's daughter convinced her father is still alive somewhere in Earth's southern hemisphere. With the help of her brother (Keith Hamshire) and a veteran seaman (an extremely unlikely if charming Maurice Chevalier), Mary convinces a shipping magnate, Lord Glenarvan (Wilfrid Hyde-White), to set sail and find the missing Captain Grant. The team survives freezing weather, avalanches, a menacing condor, an active volcano, Maori captors, and a plot by a slick George Sanders to steal a ship. Meanwhile, Mary and Glenarvan's rakish son, John (Michael Anderson Jr.), engage in flirtatious feuding. The many memorable action sequences are wildly improbable (all the more so watching the nonchalant Chevalier have a go at Indiana Jones-like heroics) and liberally employ old-fashioned process shots, mattes, paintings, and other pre-digital special effects. The incomparable Hyde-White looks as if he's having fun alternately harrumphing and encouraging good old British resolve, while Sanders effortlessly portrays, for the umpteenth time, his brand of enchanting villainy. Directed by Robert Stevenson (Mary Poppins). In Search of the Castaways is presented here in its original, full-screen format. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A classic adventure story.......2007-03-26

This film is not the greatest of the Disney live action, but it does stand out in it's own way. It is also the movie where Disney realized that Haley Mills was beginning to grow up. Based on a story by Robert Louis Stevenson, In Search of the Castaways is full of comedy, giant birds, crazed seaman, and Maurice Chevalier.

1 out of 5 stars Gypped with Glee.......2007-01-03

They very happily sold me a DVD that would not work in our "region." I see that I am not the first to be cheated either.
They would not even consider trading the item for one that would work in the U.S. What jerks. I will never buy from them again.

4 out of 5 stars "I'll Be A Castaway. . no more. . ".......2006-11-12

Fairly decent Disney flick that for the most part I have found no bad feelings for other than the fact I think this movie on a whole should be remade with todays newest special effects technology. That wintery snowy descent from the side of the mountain on loosened cliff cries for a breezier special effect showcase. OK, so some of the effects in this movie appear adlibbed and trifle, but I've by far seen worse in other movies that didn't sink into the sea. I could follow the story quite well and it certainly amused me from beginning to end, so it couldn't have as bad as one reviewer claims. I can not stand stupid insipid movies myself without giving them the heave ho or channel check.
The sum of this action adventure movie garnered a higher mark than a one star, and I'm glad that other reviewers appreciated it, as I.

1 out of 5 stars worst film I have ever seen.......2006-08-06

The only reason to rent this film is so that you can laugh at the stupidity of it. The writing was terrible, the plot so unrealistic, and the "special effects" horrible. This is by far the cheesiest and dumbest film ever made. Why Haley Mills agreed to star in it is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars In Search of the Castaways.......2006-07-21

If you're a Hayley Mills fan and a child of the 60s and 70s, then you will love this movie. It has great action, comedy, and sweet romance.

Brendan Fraser made his film debut in this 1992 comedy that never quite discovers its audience constituency. On the one hand, it features Pauly Shore, which would seem to define the picture's tone and identity accordingly. On the other hand, the film's other leading man is Sean Astin, the earnest star of Rudy, suggesting that Encino Man will have a lot of heart despite its silly premise. But none of that turns out to be true. Fraser plays an unfrozen caveman discovered by a pair of California high school outcasts (Shore and Astin). As the grunting newcomer becomes popular with the other kids, Shore and Astin try to bask in his reflected glow. Fraser, beginning a long movie career playing cartoonish goofballs, works entirely on instinct and earns his laughs. Shore, however, relies on his familiar verbal shtick, and Astin makes a great overgrown puppy pining after a lost girlfriend. Directed by Les Mayfield, who came to this project from his acclaimed documentary, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. --Tom Keogh

Description

Starring Pauly Shore, Encino Man unearths the biggest laughs in 2 million years! The fun kicks off when two high school buddies dig up a frozen caveman in their backyard! Once the living fossil thaws out, the friends figure he's their ticket to being cool. But the plan backfires when the newcomer turns everyday life upside down, generating pre-hysterical craziness wherever he roams! Co-starring Sean Astin (Bulworth) and Brendan Fraser (The Mummy), you'll definitely dig Encino Man-- the totally irreverent, totally awesome comedy that shows just how hilariously out-of-control things evolve once the stone age meets the rock age head-on!

5 out of 5 stars Most excellent, but quick question for other fans out there..........2007-05-28

Loved this movie since it came out, so I've had both the vhs tape and the dvd of it. Has anyone else noticed that on the dvd version, a part is missing? When Dave and Stoney are trying to teach Link how to fight to defend himself - at the end of that scene - you don't hear Stoney's wonderful line, 'Ow, my pancreas!'

What's up with that?

Oh, and I'd just like to point out that the movie Clueless (another great flick) owes a good part of its linguistic brilliance to Encino Man.

5 out of 5 stars Stone Age and Cavemen.......2007-04-13

I brought this movie based on the fact that I watched it when I was younger and that I love it to pieces. I had to have it in my collection. I found the movie quite entertaining and funny as heck.

4 out of 5 stars Goofy, funny, silly but BIG FUN.......2007-01-09

This is not great art, this is only great fun. I typically never watch anything more than twice, once at the theater and then once again at home if it's really good. I watched this at my 8 year old nephew's house, laughed till my sides hurt and promptly ordered the dvd for myself. I've now watched it at least 6 times. Every time I need a good laugh, in goes Encino Man. My wife likes it just as much as I do. Good clean fun.

3 out of 5 stars The Weasel Interprets Unfrozen Caveman Adolescents.......2006-08-06

Though not as amusing as "In The Army Now" nor as conceptually satisfying as "Pauly Shore is Dead" (though mercifully less painful than "Bio-Dome,") "Encino Man" is typical lighthearted buffoonery not intended for anyone not in the demographic of males aged eight to twenty. Surprisingly, given his evident onscreen cranial development, Shore does not play the Encino Man, a role that goes to Brendan Fraser.

In essence, Shore and company find a caveman adolescent while digging a pool in the yard and take him to high school. Of course there is a whole competition for the pretty girl (which concludes with some prom related mayhem and cake defiling) with much of the plot about fitting in. Needless to say the caveman, "Link," becomes very popular, and learns to do many complex tasks (like driving a car on two wheels, and dancing to an absolutely wretched song apparently called "She Likes to Feed The Monkey") easily, while indirectly winning the Prom Queen amongst much drama. In the end there is an earthquake that sends Link's true love, a teenage cavewoman back from the Neolithic era for him to drool over, in what may be the single most contrived plot point in movie history.

Be sure to watch for the "hilarious" cultural interactions in the Latino bar (the subtitles about cheese are amusing) which served only to make me wish that the INS was that effective in real life. For some reason this also gives Shore the excuse to start his trademark "weasel" bit in an odd mix of English and Spanish.

This is ultra-light entertainment, yet has some modestly funny moments. This will be a hit with most teenage males, but won't convert anyone outside that demographic. The movie is essentially clean: it was rated "PG" in the US, the UK, Australia, and Singapore, rated "T" in Spain, rated "7" in Sweden, and received the desirable rating of "L" in Iceland.

5 out of 5 stars Super fun movie!!! Infectious Grooves is in the house........2006-03-03

This is such a fun movie to watch. It is so goofy and ridicualous and you never get tired of watching it. Encino Man and Pauly Shore is one of the reasons why the early 90s ruled. There are so many cool scenes in this like when Stoney takes Link to 7-11 and they cruise the aisles looking for some grindeage to munch on. And when they go to the Mountian and ride the Viper in reverse. And the drivers ed scene when Link thinks it is Rad Mobile and he puts it up on two wheels and they end up at the bar with all the Mexicans. "You see that girl muchacho. Dont look at her!" The prom scene was cool to, it had Infectious Grooves in it. They are a real band but that song was made for the movie. The singer and bass player are in Suicidal Tendencies and the bass player plays for Metallica now. But anyways... Yeah , this movie is totally radical. Daves room is really cool to. I wish my room was that rad. The school looks cool too. I wish my high school was like that. I notice that whenever i watch something like this that was filmed in the early 90s everything seemed real bright and cheerful. Am i crazy or has anyone else noticed this? Pauly Shores punch lines and phrases never get old. They age like a fine wine... Bud-dy.

Raquel Welch in a two-piece fur bikini. That and the title is pretty much all anyone needs to know. If that indeed isn't enough, there are the dinosaurs of technician-artist Ray Harryhausen (along with some superimposed iguanas), and a prologue that tells you all you want to know about this "brutal world." Want more? There are volcanoes, barehanded wrestling with warthogs, and rival, subhuman, cannibalistic tribes--Lord, the list goes on and on! The portrait of humankind isn't the most flattering: we're petty, greedy, we grunt a lot, and we don't play well with others. Welch portrays a cavewoman from the tribe of the Blondes trying to make a life for herself with an outcast from the tribe of the Brunettes, which doesn't sit well with anybody. --Keith Simanton

Description

In this vivid view of prehistoric life, a man from the mean-spirited Rock People (John Richardson) is banished from his home. He soon finds himself among the kind, gentle Shell People and falls in love with one of their loving tribeswomen (Raquel Welch). The twosome decide to face the world together, cut off from all tribal support, alone in a deadly world of hideous beast and earthshattering volcanic eruptions. The film's pioneering special effects have made it a true science-fiction classic.

3 out of 5 stars Cute babes in furry bikinys.......2007-06-11

This is the one that made Raquel Welch a star, no dialog hokey mosters and furry 2 part swimsutes. This was/is/will be a drive in classic. So have a few beers and just let this work of art flow over you. If you are a fan of Raquel this is a must have or if you and your mates and haveing a party in your dorm room this is the movie for you.

2 out of 5 stars One Million Years B.C. the complete version please!.......2007-06-04

When "One Million Years B.C." was released on dvd I couldn't wait to get a copy! Just think, a Ray Harryhuusen and Raquel Welch interview, commentaries, isolated score, making of documentary, boy was I dreaming! Not only did it not have any of those features, which I could sadly accept, the print they used was the CUT VERSION!!! Why the studio would cut any Harryhausen footage in the first place was ridiculous! The picture quality on the dvd is sharp and colorful but it's a shame because it could have been great. I recently purchsed Fox's special editions of "Fantastic Voyage" and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", they are super! I just hope Fox reissues "One Million Years B.C. with the same bells and whistles and with the COMPLETE version!

1 out of 5 stars RUN AWAY (from this version).......2007-05-19

I completely concur with cameron-vale's and shonner's reviews : this version is : 1/ edited and 2/ mutilated at top and bottom of screen to make it look widescreen. Among the edited pieces (I can tell because I have both DVDs, though I do plan to get rid of this one...) : Tumak's erring through the desert ; the feast/dance/ceremony at the tribe's cave ; the fight between two apemen and impaling of the loser's skull ; and quite a lot of isolated shots either shortened or deleted. Worse (if at all possible) : top and bottom of screen missing entirely, which is made all the worse yet by the bonus about the restoration process, that compares an admittedly badly scratched but full screen 1993 film version with the truncated 1996 laserdisc version used for this DVD (as regards the 2002 "restored film version" and "restored video version", I can see absolutely no difference between the two). And to make things complete and irrevocable, there is a bad technical problem : on my player and projector at least, I keep getting blurred lines every couple of frames (every time someone moves, actually...). What is "better" about this version, then ? Well, maybe the fact that you get a couple more languages and a lot of subtitles for the 3 or 4 only sentences of the film (at the very beginning) - including the "English for hearing impaired" that is actually quite fun : "HISSES", "ROAR", that kind of thing all the time ! Or the short demonstration of the restoration process (including its shortcomings, then...). This stops mighty short of being worth the buy. So sorry for the extra bucks, folks, but if you do plan to buy this film (if, like me, you are a Ray Harryhausen fan, for instance, and want to own every picture he ever made - which is now possible at relatively low cost -), go by all means for the British version on amazon.co.uk while it lasts, I promise it's worth every extra penny.

3 out of 5 stars Raquel Welsh 1 Million A.D........2007-03-19

Before Tanya Roberts wore loin cloth in "Sheena" 1984 there was Raquel Welsh and the only thing worth remembering in this picture is Raquel Welsh. There is nothing else. You will not learn any sociological aspects on primitive man like you would from watching "Quest For Fire" 1981 nor will you enjoy the special effects because they suck. "Jason and the Argonauts" 1963 had better effects. Raquel Welsh is the only reason to watch this film. If you are not interested in watching Raquel Welsh than you can watch that other caveman movie starting Ringo Star and Barbara Bach.

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to people who complain about the DVD. just buy it. it's good.......2007-02-13

Although european vversion is longer, but it's a very good release at cost of 5 dollars. It's a dual-layer DVD with good quality, 2 trailers and 10 exciting previws. movie itself is awsome. It's not a B movie. It's one of the best science/fiction classics I've ever seen!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars sinking to the Bottom Of The Sea.......2007-06-22

...has all the earmarks of a classic 'good bad' movie but just doesn't pull it of. Simply not bad enough to be funny, but is rather dull. Poor, old Walter Pidgeon and his sad little neckerchief, looking best to be sincere. Professional cocky sourpuss Ben Gazzara stars as well, along with sweaty Ernest Borgnine. Expect little and maybe be mildly amused.

4 out of 5 stars "Undersea Odyssey" in Your Own Aquarium!!.......2007-05-24

This Canadian-made film had a huge ad campaign back in the day(1973) with a poster sporting more than was delivered. A seaquake sends a rather cheap-looking model "Oceanlab II" into an unknown abyss and only the high-tech "Neptune", piloted by Ben Gazzara can rescue(begrudgingly) any survivors. All-star cast, but sub(no pun!)par FX work that appears to have been shot in a large aquarium! The giant sea monsters are...gasp... sea bass, eels, sand sharks all filmed close-up and "giant" in very sandy bottomed aquariums with a toy-model of the Neptune occasionally buffeted about and attacked by them. One shot has some animatronic(for the time) sea monsters but they look incredibly badly done. At once point the sub gets caught in a "river of sand". Some bad continuity topside does not help the film(sunny from outside the ship, cloudy from inside). However, good performances salvage some of this and it's good for laughs and, 70's nostalgia. You know it's a "Sea" movie with Walter Pigeon and Ernest Borgnine in it!

3 out of 5 stars I Remember It As Better.......2007-05-03

When I first saw this film as a kid in a theater, I remember it scared the hell out of me. As an adult, when I saw a vhs copy, I realized there wasn't much to be afraid of here, other than a reality check. Still, it is a favorite from my childhood, and I'm lucky enough as an adult to be able to slip back into that child long enough to ignore the bad miniatures, and magnified fish, and the anti-climactic ending. When this movie is compared to a classic like Fantastic Voyage, it can't hold a candle; but it is still a fun little adventure movie, with a very good cast. I'm looking forward to seeing it in it's widescreen format for the first time since it was in the theater.

5 out of 5 stars NEPTUNE FACTOR- DVD.......2004-08-18

I loved this movie and would be wonderful in DVD. It was filmed in 2.35 and would be great to come out in widescreen.

Please vote for this movie. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Deep sea adventure in an aquarium.......2003-07-28

I saw this as a kid when it was first in theaters. It was disappointing back then (as far as living up to the ads), but it has always maintained a special place in my heart as one of the great bad movies. It even has a good cast; Ernest Borgnine, Walter Pidgeon to name a few.

A venture is building an underwater research facility with an eye towards undersea colonization. At the heart is a habitat called Oceanlab II. They were hoping to discover something about how earthquakes are caused when they experience one and fall into the depths (about 1,000 feet). If all is well, they only have a limited number of days of life support.

After a sub can find no traces, a special sub, the Neptune, is brought in. This is a funny sub. It is all bright white and orange and very limited batteries. It looks like a toy. I guess that helps when a toy is maneuvered through a fish tank as part of the special effects.

As one can see from the box, the crew encounter big fish. Really big fish.

What's so bad? Well, how about a highly specialized sub where the Captain doesn't use a proper crew? He uses some of the divers from the venture and they seem to know all about operating the sub.
How about a deep-sea sub that runs out of power and gives up before they go as deep as the conventional sub?
How about a Captain who keeps trying to call off the rescue mission (until the very end when he gives in)?
How about Ernest Borgnine constantly leaving the sub to check things out instead of using the sub?
How about laughable sound effects meant to be the sounds of big fish?
How about aerial shots of a calm ocean with clear skies that always turns to heavy haze when seen from shipdeck?
How about the crew of a science ship using their eyes to see if the sub is returning instead of using the sonar?

All this adds up to a wonderfully bad movie that fits in with the idea that many film greats end their careers in mediocre movies. Such is the case with Pidgeon (this was not quite his last film), another example is Orson Wells who ended with Transformers: The Movie (he played a big fat planet).

So bad you just have to watch this one.

This 2001 Godzilla feature from Japan's Toho Studios, released as part of the mighty monster's 50th anniversary, is a visually impressive and action-packed entry in the long-running franchise, but also one with a fast and loose re-interpretation of its history that may displease some stalwart fans. Writer-director Shusuke Kaneko (who previously revitalized the Gamera series) erases everything that occurred after 1954's Godzilla and re-imagines the beast as a mythical creature harboring the souls of the Japanese victims of World War II; its attack is challenged by three "Guardian Monsters": Mothra, perennial villain King Ghidorah (here reinvented as hero) and B-list player Baragon (from Frankenstein Challenges the World). The retooling, while imaginative, is supported by spectacular special effects, but the monsters' brawls (a core reason for enjoying these films) seem abbreviated, and Kaneko's script experiences awkward seismic shifts from comedy to grim drama that may befuddle longtime G-fans. Columbia-Tri-Star's DVD is widescreen and offers Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and a Japanese language track (with English subtitles) that should please viewers with an aversion to dubbing. Trailers for other Sony/Columbia sci-fi titles like the American Godzilla feature are also included. --Paul Gaita

Description

After 50 years since his attack on Tokyo in 1954, the destructive monster Godzilla has somehow returned to life to destroy the city again. Now the religious cult must call upon the three monsters, King Ghidorah, Mothra and Baragon to protect Japan from Godzilla!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Godzilla ROCKS in this movie!.......2007-06-12

My 5 year old son has been watching Godilla movies with me for some time now, and this movie recently appeared on cable. I had never seen it before , and WOW - Gozilla ROCKS! He is certainly more agressive, and with his milky eyes seems far more sinister. Having King Ghidorah as a good guy was a little wierd, but seemed to work OK.
The special effects were excellent. The miniature work was above par in comparison to earlier Godzilla movies. And this lizard is MEAN.
There are no annoying "faries" sining songs on miniature Mothras, just an excellent movie overall.

3 out of 5 stars Best G-Film of the Millenium series...Bare bones release.......2007-03-21

Despite the creative controls forced by Toho, Shusuke Kaneko delivers a fantastic entry to the Godzilla series, perhaps the best since Biollante in '89. Although there are a few plot elements that could have been better explained, GMK has a strong story and features memorable characters performing some of the most heroic acts since the golden age of the '60s. The effects are top notch, with very few "cringe" moments that often plague tokusatsu eiga. I can only dream of what could have been if Shinji Higuchi was at the spfx director's helm. But that's only a fanboy wish. In the end, while certainly nowhere near the masterpiece that is Gamera 3, GMK is a slice above the rest of the Godzilla series and we have Kaneko to thank for it.

The DVD by Tristar unfortunately suffers from the same minimalist approach as most of their other Godzilla releases. The film presentation is superb (and it should be...the movie was only 3 years old at the time of it's release). The 5.1 surround is fantastic and sounds great. The English dub is horrendous as usual, so don't bother listening to it. However, be forewarned: the subtitles on this disc are taken from the English dub and NOT from the original Japanese dialog. Therefore, expect a great deal of "loose" translations that may confuse you or even give the wrong information. In other words, those often idiotic phrases you will see do not come from the original script. Believe me, the Japanese acting is great and does not suffer from bad dialog (I've seen this movie with proper subtitles).

Extras are non-existent, which is a real shame seeing as the R2 release by Toho is filled to the brim with behind the scenes footage and documentaries. Why Tristar doesn't just use those is completely beyond me.

In the end, this is a worthwhile release and if you don't care about how they made it (which is too bad seeing as how suitmation BTS are fantastic to watch...more interesting than a bunch of people sitting at a computer rendering effects) then this is for you. If you are a geek like me and willing to spend a little more money, get a region-free player and buy Toho's disc (I plan on doing that soon).

3 out of 5 stars The fat Godzilla.......2007-02-17

The big G is back and fatter than ever. The story is different in this movie, and I'm annoyed how they just push all the other godzilla movies out of the way. The three monsters who fight Godzilla, who are called Guardian monsters, are called Beragon, the newcomer, Mothra, the peacemaker and Ghidorah, the villian that has now turned hero. Godzilla's cool, his attitude being one of the crappiest I've ever seen, but they make him way too fat in this movie; and he's walks too upright to me. I think it's good, and Godzilla has done it again.

5 out of 5 stars Now this is a Kaiju film!.......2006-07-21

This is the darkest Gojira film since the original from 1954. Thanks to the director of the awesome "Gamera: Advent of Legion", Shusuke Kaneko. He has a knack for making dark, sinister, awesome Kaiju films. This is what Gojira is suppose to be: a wicked, unstoppable force. Gojira shows no mercy towards anyone or anything. Gojira purposely takes human life. Look for a scene with a girl in a hospital as Gojira approaches. Grant it, Ryuhei Kitamura's "Godzilla: Final Wars" is good, but it is nothing like this film. One of the great aspects of this film is that Gojira has all white eyes; being that he is possessed by the souls of dead soldiers. King Ghidorah being a savior of man is something different. He was always a destroyer of mankind. Overall, the finest Kaiju film in decades. MUST BUY!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, wow, wow! Best Godzilla movie ever!.......2006-07-16

Outstanding Godzilla movie! This is the most well directed, well put together Godzilla movie that I have ever seen. Excellent quality here. The effects are truly incredible. The acting is superb. Godzilla looks better than he has ever looked.

This movie is intense and terrifying in many parts. You will be blown away by how great this movie is. Even for people who are not really Godzilla fans will enjoy this. This is the kind of movie that will just leave you saying, "wow". It's my all time favorite Gozilla film and anyone even slightly interested in Gozilla would surely enjoy this wonderful movie!

Attempting to do for Westerns what his Guns of Navarone had done for World War II action epics, director J. Lee Thompson crafted Mackenna's Gold as a lavish, absurdly ambitious variation on Erich Von Stroheim's Greed, resulting in a last-gasp Western so eager to encompass the genre's traditions that it turns into a big, silly, wildly entertaining mess. Gregory Peck surely had more serious intentions when he signed on, and he brings prestigious gravitas to his glum role as Marshall Mackenna, who gets shanghaied into searching for the gold-filled canyon of an elusive Apache legend. The rest of the 1969 film labors to undermine Peck's respectable demeanor; how else to explain Omar Sharif as a Mexican villain, Julie Newmar as a hot-blooded Apache temptress (with underwater nude scenes that were celebrated in Playboy magazine), and a jaw-dropping finale that's so ridiculous it's impressive in spite of itself?

Formerly blacklisted screenwriter Carl Foreman and composer Dimitri Tiomkin joined up to coproduce the film, and one can only imagine how Anthony Mann or Howard Hawks might've handled Foreman's sensible script. Thompson goes for scenic splendor, heavy action, and heavier emotions, casting everything at a fever pitch that's wildly enjoyable without betraying his "serious" intentions. A stable of Hollywood veterans (Eli Wallach, Raymond Massey, Edward G. Robinson, and others) appear in lively supporting roles--they're all dispatched in a garish Apache ambush--and Camilla Sparv is an ingénue with plenty of fighting attitude. Gold fever reaches its peak, along with some awesome special effects, and divine intervention reaches new heights of intensity. Top it off with José Feliciano's theme song, and you'll be in zany Western heaven. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars I know this place. It's Shaking Rock..no gold around there.......2007-06-28

Gregory Peck and some of the biggest names in the movie industry saddle up in search of the 'Lost Adams' or 'Canyon del Oro' mine. This is one action packed western. Jose Feliciano's `Old Turkey Buzzard' plays background score to scenic desert cinematography as everyone rides off in search of gold. Just keep in mind that the film was shot in 1969 and so to my knowledge has no CGI's (Computer-generated imagery). There are some modeling and interesting editing in some of the action shots (crossing the bridge sequence, etc). Look past this and enjoy the adventure as gold fever strikes everyone in this very entertaining movie. Wonderful panoramic visual treats combined with a great story make this a must for action and western lovers. Well worth the ride to Shaking Rock.

5 out of 5 stars MacKenna's Gold.......2007-01-09

I advidly enjoy the classical movies made in the 60's,70's, and this one was a particular favorite of mine. I hope more classics will be put on DVD
to be enjoyed now.

3 out of 5 stars A curious serial-like Western melodrama packed with stars and pretensions above its situation..........2006-11-06

The film opens with a narration by Victor Jory about an Apache legend: a hidden canyon, guarded by the Apache gods and rich with gold... As long as the Apaches kept the canyon a secret and never touched the gold, they would be strong and powerful...

Marshal Mackenna (Gregory Peck) wasted three years chasing that wild goose... He immediately knew the place and identified it as 'Shaking Rock' but insisted to the old Apache dying chief who was keeping the map that there is no gold around there: "The only dust I found was prairie dust!"

Before the chief dies, Mackenna destroys the map, confident it is a myth...

When the ludicrous Mexican bandit Colorado (Omar Sharif) appears on the scene with his gang, and discovers the useless burned map, he took Mackenna--his living map--to his hideout in a little box canyon and forced him to lead him to the legendary canyon...

Colorado's gang includes Hesh-Ke (Julie Newmar), an attractively jealous Apache woman who was once involved with Mackenna, Hachita (Ted Cassidy), a strong and deadly Apache warrior, and a captive girl called Inga (Camilla Sparv), daughter of a murdered judge who put a price on Colorado's head...

Along the way, the group is joined by 'good' citizens, dirty scheming ambitious men, a lot of bronco Apaches on the prowl, and the U.S. Cavalry after anybody and everybody... Probably after the gold too...

"Mackenna's Gold" remains a curious serial-like Western melodrama packed with stars and pretensions above its situation... The script completely wastes the fine cast... On a lower level, it is quite enjoyable... Julie Newmar is a delight, a natural beauty and a distinct "presence" that immediately captivates the audience... There are scenic location shots of the vastness of the desert, exciting action scenes, pretty spectacular scenes of danger but all hampered by frustrating special effects...

This murky rumination on keeping faith in our troubled times was an early sign that writer-director Lawrence Kasdan (Silverado) was losing his once-powerful grasp on the art of storytelling. Set in modern Los Angeles--with all its random violence, venality, ubiquitous police presence, earthquakes, and dreams--the film concerns an unusual intersection of lives and chance occurrences that alter everyone's perspective on destiny. Kasdan, very understandably, is attempting to create an experience for viewers as intuitive as the undefined forces propelling his characters. But from the outside looking in, there isn't enough internal logic in the story to help us connect the dots. Steve Martin has an interesting part as a garish film producer who undergoes a change in priorities after being assaulted on the street. --Tom Keogh

Description

When a lawyer's (Kevin Kline) car breaks down in a dangerous Los Angeles neighborhood, a tow-truck driver (Danny Glover) arrives just in time to save his life. The two men begin a deep friendship that sets off a chain of unsettling and surprising events involving their families and friends for years to come. Lawrence Kasdan's powerful, uplifting film about the harsh realities of contemporary urban life co-stars Steve Martin, Mary McDonnell, Mary-Louise Parker and Alfre Woodard.

5 out of 5 stars Characters You CARE about in a Truly Thought-Provoking Drama.......2007-02-22

I'm not big on dramas, but I AM a fan of Lawrence Kasdan's 1991 film "Grand Canyon."

The film is essentially about the 'grand canyon' that exists between the races and the haves and have-nots in our country. It powerfully starts out with middle-aged husband/lawyer Kevin Kline taking an unwise detour in LA and breaking down on the bad side of town; the situation turns very threatening when a group of thugs harrass him, but he is ultimately saved by Danny Glover, a tow truck driver. Thus begins a relationship that positively impacts both of their lives and the lives of those connected to them.

One powerful subplot involves Kline's love/lust for women (like any red-blooded male). He and his wife (Mary McDonnell) are experiencing the empty nest syndrome; he naturally veers toward an affair at work. There's an early scene wherein the potential "other woman" (Mary-Louise Parker) comes into his office at work and puts her hand on his. It's a simple yet potent scene. Is it wrong for Kline to have feelings for this woman? And, if so, should he risk destroying his marriage by pursuing a more intimate relationship? And, if he does commit adultery, can he still change his mind before it's too late? Will he?

That's just one subplot amongst many. Some reviewers obviously feel there are TOO many stories going on. I suggest they stick to lighter fare, like maybe "RV" (giggle).

Anyway, some themes explored include:

-- Miraculous life-saving encounters/opportunities.
-- White/black relations.
-- The rich/working class/poor "divide"
-- Homelessness.
-- Why do kids join gangs/become hoodlums?
-- The challenges of a 20-year nigh romanceless marriage.
-- The drive to improve one's living standards.
-- Does violence in film escalate violence or is it simply a reflection of society? Does a filmmaker have a moral responsibility to society?
-- Life-changing experiences that aren't so life-changing after all.
-- How many split seconds do you have to make a left turn in downtown traffic?
-- What do you do after miraculously finding/saving an infant?
-- Divine intervention.
-- Matchmaking, blind dates and finding Mr. or Ms. "right."
-- The ripple-effect each person's actions have on others, revealing humanity's significance, which is contrasted by the idea that humanity is inconsequential compared to the Earth & universe's timeless marvels, like the Grand Canyon itself.

The picture obviously bites off a LOT, but it is well able to chew it. It bespeaks of REAL LIFE and doesn't come off contrived at all. Take for example the teenager's driving lesson: He makes a serious mistake and then pulls over. After his father explains a few things he attempts to start the vehicle which is ALREADY running. We've all done that. Another example would be Steve Martin's incredibly beautiful redhead girlfriend Vanessa (Sarah Trigger): She's calm, happy and pleasant one moment but then suddenly starts crying (obviously provoked by a statement or word). A rambling and uncomfortable emotional rant ensues. It's REAL. Another example would be Mary Mcdonnell's reaction when her son asks if she and Kline are getting a divorce. Completely shocked, she asks, "Why would you ask that?! Do we seem like a couple on the verge of divorce?" She KNOWS that her son wouldn't ask such a question unless he sensed there were problems in the marriage on some instinctual level. These are just three MINOR examples off the top of my head, there's numerous more prominent examples throughout the film.

I've heard some complain that there's no humor. Huh? Did we see the same movie? There's actually quite a bit of humor or, at least, amusing and light-hearted moments. (How could there not be with Steve Martin in the cast?). Even though the picture is essentially a serious drama I busted out laughing, snickering ar smiling on quite a few occasions. The film truly delivers in this department. Plus it's realistic humor, not contrived.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Scanning through the reviews you'll note that "Grand Canyon" is a love it or hate it piece. I happen to love it. The acting is, for the most part, great and you really come to care for the characters; you CARE about the outcome of each of the many storylines. One reviewer commented that "Grand Canyon" is a depressing film; he couldn't be more wrong (Did he even finish the picture?). Yes, there are some highly disconcerting story elements, but [minor SPOILER ALERT!] the film wraps up on a very positive note [END ALERT]. Other reviewers ridiculously criticize Steve Martin, who has a beard and plays a filmmaker. These people need to get a life; Martin was perfect for the role.

A couple things I love about "Grand Canyon" is that it respects the intelligence of the viewer; it's not dumbed-down, nor is everything spelled out. Some things you simply have to read inbetween-the-lines, others are left to the imagination. It also provokes you to ponder the numerous issues it addresses for DAYS afterward. Few movies have this effect. In fact, there's so much to "Grand Canyon" that you'll get something new from the picture with each viewing. You could easily watch the film twice a year for the rest of your life and STILL derive new nuggets from its wealth of ideas with each viewing.

Oh, about the New York Times critic that lambasted "Grand Canyon" as the worst movie ever made (yeah right, 1991 was the same year "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" was released!): First of all, who cares what some moron at the NY Times says? The very fact that he writes for the NY Times tells you that his artistic judgment shouldn't be taken too seriously. Secondly, his favorite films are likely "Jackass: The Movie" and "The Dukes of Hazzard," what's that tell ya?

Quite a few negative reviewers here at Amazon mentioned this critics insane bashing of the picture. They obviously give WAY, WAY too much creedance to this guy's opinion, proving the power of suggestion: These not-too-smart, mindless, sheepy followers watched the film with this man's ultra-negative criticisms in mind and it naturally compelled them to view the picture with a ridiculous nitpicky, fault-finding attitude. My experience was different: I caught the film on TV about 7 years ago and enjoyed it with a completely untainted, unbiased mindset (I never even heard of the picture before). I liked it so much I eventually bought the DVD circa 2002. I've watched it on average about once a year since that time and have been enlightened to a greater degree (so to speak) with each viewing, not to mention I enjoyed it period (in other words, it's enjoyable simply AS IS without the burdern of looking for some message).

Make no mistake, "Grand Canyon" is a film of the most eminent order -- a masterpiece, in fact.

1 out of 5 stars Complete Boredom........2007-01-21

This movie consists of a bunch of unrelated tragedies in Los Angeles, having nothing at all to do with the Grand Canyon.

The dialog consists of people exchanging meaningless comments at cross purposes. Nothing happens. Nothing is decided.

Steve Martin is totally miscast in trying to be a serious character.
he is better off just standing in front of a tv camera and telling jokes.

It seemed as if this movie took about 12 hours.

There is no observable plot.

After a while the screen says "The End."

5 out of 5 stars Crash from an easier time.......2006-04-08

This brilliant movie was thought to be too severe a review about LA living. It is actually more optimistic than Crash with more real fun, optimism and spirituality.

4 out of 5 stars Grand Canyon.......2006-03-27

This film was recommended to me by a friend. I was hesitant after reading reviews of the film, as it had received marginal ratings. I don't agree with those who have rated this film poorly. I enjoyed the deep emotion displayed in this film by the cast, who I might add, were excellent in their roles. This story takes place in Los Angeles and has many similarities to "Crash", as it deals with issues of race and prejudices. I believe this film was fairly innovative in 1991, which might be the reason it was not well received. The story does have weeknesses in the fact that I was constantly expecting something bad to happen and then all worked out at the last minute before impending disaster. In Crash, the bad things happen which gives that story more depth and tears at your emotions. This film deals with issues that most of us can relate to. That being, we don't always take the time to really explore our feelings and emotions. We don't always take time to explore how our actions affect those people we love or care for. I liked those aspects of the film. My husband was not as affected this way and would probably agree with those who rated this film with low to medium ratings.

I truly enjoyed this film. It may not be for everybody, but I would recommend it and I would enjoy watching it again.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the ignorant jibes...this film is truly outstanding........2006-03-26

I've just endured an unpleasant half hour trawling through the myriad reviews of "Grand Canyon", that are so misinformed as to be laughable.

Aside from the fact that the New York Times may have awarded this the "worst film of all time" (in a year that "Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves" was released?? - please!) I find these attitude of such reviewers quite lamentable. Grand Canyon is a magnificent film - and absolutlely NOT just the purview of "New Agers"! Anyone who has studied film to even a marginal degree will recognise the greatness in Grand Canyon. No, it's not "The Godfather"... yet it is still one of the finest films of its time. To those it touches (and there are many), it is unforgettable.

Kasdan had a vision that was unfortunately ahead of its time (and still appears to be in 2006, judging from some of the reviews here!). Certainly not "The Big Chill", Grand Canyon is a far more nuanced work - to those who understand its subtleties, it is sublime - to those still struggling to comprehend the mysteries, magic and meaning of our existance here, I can see how it might appear impenetrable or pretentious. That is no fault of the film itself - just as "Deuce Bigalow" is speaking to its chosen audience of prepubertal adolescents, so is Grand Canyon attempting to connect with those humans who choose to delve beneath the flimsy facade of modern existance. To the opinion-makers, it will naturally slip under their radar; don't let that be a reason for you missing this unmissable film.

To anyone considering this film, I implore you - do not be distracted by the inane ramblings of posters who wouldn't understand a truly meaningful film if they fell over it. Grand Canyon is for a select audience - it will never be widely popular; as if that were any true marker of what is important! Grand Canyon stands tall as one of the great achievements of the 1990s - watch it, and be moved. Watch it, and see a reflection of the world we currently find ourselves in - striving for answers, yearning for meaning... and looking all the while for the magic that defines our existance.

Dismissed by seismologists and roasted by critics, 10.5 offers everything you'd expect from a cheesy camp-classic disaster flick. Originally broadcast on May 2 and 3, 2004, this $20 million NBC sweeps-week miniseries achieved its ratings goal (20 million viewers) by promising a respectable cast and spectacular digital effects to simulate "the Big One"--a series of fault-ripping earthquakes that re-shape the entire West Coast of the United States. The first quake hits Seattle, toppling the Space Needle in a ridiculous opening sequence, and within minutes deep-fault expert Kim Delaney (no doubt regretting her departure from NYPD Blue) is busy convincing the President (Beau Bridges) and his geological advisor (Fred Ward) that only a series of nuclear blasts will "heal the rift" in the shifting tectonic plates. With John Schneider and The West Wing's Dulé Hill in thankless supporting roles, 10.5 deliberately strives for supreme badness, leaving no cliché unturned and cursing its cast with the worst dialogue in miniseries history. It's gloriously awful and uproariously entertaining. 10.5 may not rock your world, but natural disasters were never this much fun. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Except for the Model Train.......2007-03-10

This is a good, sort of plausible movie. My wife and I did had to chuckle at two of the train scenes - can you say "HO"? I knew you could....

But on the whole a good job - and having the ocean pour into the fault eliminated the tsunami issue. Robert Heinlein did the same thing in a story called "Water is for Washing" many years ago.

On the whole, I do recommend the movie. Put in in the player, grab the popcorn and enjoy. ; )

PS: If this looks familiar.....I attached it originally to "10.5 Apocalypse" by mistake. My Bad.

    5 out of 5 stars 10.5.......2007-02-08

Really like this movie and its sequeal 10.5 apocalypse.
One of the best earthquake movies I've seen

1 out of 5 stars It's like a train wreck. Yet I cannot look away...........2006-12-26

So full of predictable characters & stupid dialogue, and chock full of so many scientific errors that even a dumb nuclear physicist like myself can spot and laugh at.

    1 out of 5 stars Unbelievably BAD!.......2006-12-25

This is among the ten WORST films I've ever seen! It's really sad this movie could have been made far better, at least 3 or even 4 stars, with only minor tweaking. As it is, 10.5 is ridiculous and extremely laughable in many scenes, and the overall plot struggles with credibility. An episode of the Flintstones is more scientifically factual.

1 out of 5 stars Let's not try for any accuracy.......2006-11-29

I know that in most natural disaster flicks they don't always get all of the technical details right, or they push the boundaries of reality a bit in order to tell a better story. I liked "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak" despite their taking of artistic license. They seemed to have consulted a scientist to at least learn the basics. But this made-for-TV tripe goes beyond belief into the realm of laughable drivel.

Indeed, the only redeeming quality of the movie is that it is SO ridiculously wrong that you start laughing in disbelief at its stupidity.

Here are some of the technical wrongs:
~In each earthquake, for some reason the richter scale is a variable number that increases as the earthquake progresses and then decreases as the earthquake comes to an end. In reality, the richter scale measures the total energy released through the entire event. It can only be determined after the fact.
    ~If I remember my geology classes correctly, a 10.5 earthquake isn't possible.
~When a fault line "breaks" it does not create a sinkhole that follows train tracks around curves and only stops when it finally swallows the train that it has been chasing. Get real.
~In the opening sequence, a cyclist outruns the earthquake waves. No way anyone could ride a bike that fast. The waves of an earthquake travel probably hundreds or thousands of miles an hour. I don't know the exact number, but it's much faster than the 10 mph that a biker could go.
~Setting off a nuclear explosion wouldn't seal an earthquake fault. It would create thousands more.

Anyway, this is just a taste of the inaccuracies that were inserted solely for theatrical effect. Unfortunately I was not on the edge of my seat out of suspense. I lost all interest in the movie after the first 10 seconds, but kept watching because I was given extra credit in geology for writing an essay about how terrible the movie was.
