This first sequel to Dirty Harry was written by a couple of strong voices, writer-directors Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter) and John Milius (Farewell to the King). But that doesn't mean the film is particularly good. After Don Siegel's ferociously dark style in the first movie, Ted Post's blocky, television-ish direction in Magnum Force is a huge letdown. The story doesn't win any prizes, either. Eastwood's San Francisco detective Harry Callahan (apparently having retrieved his badge after throwing it away at the end of Dirty Harry) takes on a vigilante squad within the city's police force. David Soul is pretty convincing as the major spokesman for these right-wing avengers. Eastwood, on the other hand, had already turned Callahan from fascinating outsider in Siegel's film to purveyor of tough-guy shtick in this one. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars It's "Classic Clint!!!!!" Enough said!.......2007-07-01

The movies sell themselves. However, they are not the first in the "Dirty Harry" series I was trying to find as a set. It was as close as I could come to it. I had a hard time finding these the way it was. I'll have to purchase "Sudden Impact" seperately.
This was also the best price I could find on the web from a reputable source. Fast delivery. Very Satisfied.

Thanks Amazon!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A good deal.......2007-04-23

When you figure that all these movies go for about 13-15 dollars each elsewhere, it's a good deal. Individually, the choice of movies is odd. While the first two Dirty Harry movies are the better of the series, and entertaining, the psychological horror of tightrope almost feels misplaced. Perhaps Dirty Harry, tightrope, and another non-dirty harry copy movie would have been better. Regardless, the movies themselves are all good, and worthy of purchase.

If you are a "Dirty Harry" fan this set is a must. wonderful. I wish more of the movies were on DVD.

When a mysterious wave of killings sweeps the Mafia underworld, it's Inspector "Dirty Harry" Callahan who answers with Magnum Force. Despite a demotion by Lt. Neil Briggs for his questionable methods, Harry will stop at nothing to find the killers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Eastwood is the conventional tough-guy par excellence..........2007-01-08

A racketeer, Carmine Ricca, has been cleared of murder, due to the usual and frustrating court technicality... He leaves, a happy and free man... Not for long... A motorcycle cop pulls his car over, seemingly for a traffic violation and ruthlessly slaughters him and the other three occupants...

Harry is soon on the scene, this time with a new black partner, Early Smith (Felton Perry). It transpires that Harry is no longer in the homicide squad, he's been demoted to a stake-out squad by Detective Briggs (Hal Holbrook) because of his previous unconventional methods... Nevertheless he soon demonstrates that he has lost none of his considerable skills... Enjoying a hamburger at San Francisco Airport he becomes involved in a hijack...

Harry meets an old colleague Charlie McCoy (Mitch Ryan) who seems unnaturally upset about the ineffectiveness of the courts and Harry fears that he may be the killer cop...

Later, in the police firing range, he meets four young traffic cops who are more than impressed by his former lethal methods... With a wave of underworld killings on the increase, Harry is eventually told to work with Briggs to solve them... He still suspects the murderer is McCoy until the latter is killed and, by setting a clever trap to check the bullets in the guns of the four young motorcycle cops, Harry finds that they are the guilty persons...

"Magnum .44" is much bloodier than "Dirty Harry." The lack of emotion emerges in Harry's character... He is a powerful and dominating figure who shoots first and asks questions later... Director Ted Post takes him from below to imprint his stature on the piece...

Eastwood is solid enough but not as penetrating as it was in "Dirty Harry." He even have sex... Inevitably, as is usual with his persona, the initiative has to come from the female, unsuccessfully from McCoy's widow and extremely directly from the pretty little Japanese girl who lives downstairs... She gazes up at Eastwood and says: "What does a girl have to do to go to bed with you?" He replies: "Try knocking at the door." They've only known each other for about half a minute, making it one of the swiftest screen seductions on record, and it illustrates the fact that Eastwood's sex appeal is instant and uncomplicated... He is the conventional tough-guy par excellence - handsome, laconic, cynical, determined and independent; clearly a man to be idolized by other men and worshiped by women...

3 out of 5 stars Clint Eastwood in his second Dirty Harry Outing.......2006-09-10

In the first movie in this series, "Dirty Harry," Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) hunted a serial killer. In this sequel, Detective Callahan goes after a group of vigilante cops. Clint's first outing as Harry Callahan received a lot of criticism. Harry was called a vigilante and all sorts of other names. So in this movie, Harry shows that he is actually a law-abiding citizen. We also get to see genuine vigilantes in comparison to kind, gentle, Harry Callahan.

This movie does do a fair amount of mis-direction to keep you from figuring out all the details. Sharp-eyed viewers have a good chance to spot all the bad-guys before the movie reveals them. I was not so sharp-eyed the first time I saw this movie; I failed to spot the leader of the pack until the end.

There are several actors in this movie that went on to significantly greater fame. Suzanne Sommers appears briefly, and without briefs, or a top, at least, in a pool scene. Suzanne's appearance is really short, because moments after her top comes off, she gets a bullet in the chest. David Soul plays a rookie cop in this film. Though Soul had been acting since the 1960's, he would soon be very famous as Hutch of Starsky and Hutch. Tim Matheson plays another cop. Matheson has been in dozens of movies, including "Animal House," and has had dozens of television appearances. Robert Urich plays another cop. This movie marks Urich's first movie appearance. Soon Urich would be on S.W.A.T. and then Vegas. This movie was also Paul D'Amato's first appearance on television or in the movies. D'Amato would later appear in "The Deer Hunter" and a number of episodes of "Law & Order."

This movie is generally hokey. There are too many coincidences and the killer cops are too obvious. In real life they would have been caught quickly. However, if you can look past the inconsistencies, this movie has good steady action and is generally one of the better films in this genre. This movie fails to live up to the first movie in the series, but Eastwood fans and action movie fans will likely find it generally enjoyable.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Eastwood and Siegel continue their winning partnership........2006-08-15

Magnum Force (1973) My favorite of the Dirty Harry films. Clint Eastwood is at his peak here as an avenging supercop out to defeat a cabal of vigilantes who make him look like the Easter Bunny. Longtime Eastwood associate Don Siegel directs. Hal Holbrook provides an excellent foil for Clint, and the final line, ("man's got to know his limitations") is priceless.

Dirty Harry is back and a strange thing

the first Dirty Harry, Gonzalez hangs
it up after getting shot a few times.
And before that partner(s) Fanducci
gets killed and Dietrick has bullet

(and I don't mean Charlie Sheen!) Third
best Dirty Harry after original and Dead

4 out of 5 stars FACILE , DUBIOUS, PHASE OF THE SFDP (1970s era).......2005-10-23

Having finally seen this movie in its DVD inconvation, I am glad that my initial views and opinions were reinforced.

This is a powerful movie of the insidious and evil corruption of police everywhere and it was a wake-up call to corruption and evil all over the world - not in the USA singularly - but seems to be endemic worldwise. How very, very sad.

Five--count 'em, five--chances to wallow in the shoot-first, ask-questions-later ethos of San Francisco cop Harry Callahan, who became a signature character for actor Clint Eastwood. The first one, Dirty Harry, is the best, a Don Siegel film in which Harry flouts rules about police brutality to capture a serial killer. In Magnum Force he tracks rogue cops and utters his "Do you feel lucky, punk?" speech. In The Enforcer he gets a female partner (future Cagney and Lacy star Tyne Daly). Sudden Impact featured him tracking a female serial killer and offered a new catch phrase: "Go ahead. Make my day." And The Dead Pool, aside from offering a smart little chase involving a radio-controlled model car, brought him face to face with Liam Neeson. You can't ask for much more firepower in one box than this. --Marshall Fine

They just don't make cop movies like they used to. My favorite part were the 'making of' films for the first three movies. They were narrated by the guy from Dragnet.
Do yourself a favor -- you may find this set cheaper someplace else on the web. But you should buy it here. This was originally my hubbie's Valentine's Day gift. He didn't get it until a month later because I was trying to be cheap. Two other online vendors couldn't deliver (and getting refunds was a nightmare). I ordered it here and three business days later I had it in hand.

    Product Description

"Dirty" Harry Callahan was one of the first screen characters to embody contemporary fears about crime--and the uncompromising response to it that much of the audience would liked to have seen. Clint Eastwood's laconic rogue cop became an instant screen icon; his catchphrases ("Do you feel lucky?", "Make my day") were and still are endlessly quoted, and he even inspired a futuristic comic-strip counterpart in the person of Judge Dredd. Made at the time when the real "Zodiac" serial killer was terrorising San Francisco, the original Dirty Harry struck a frighteningly realistic note in 1971: aside from Eastwood, director Don Siegel's taught, pacey direction, Lalo Schifrin's nervy jazz score and Andrew Robinson's cackling psycopath "Scorpio" all make a strong impact. Such was the film's success that it gave rise to no less than four sequels, none of which are its equal but all of which get by on the charisma of Eastwood's anti-hero, even when he's increasingly trapped by the character's one-dimensional persona. This five-disc box set contains all the "Harry" movies: Dirty Harry (1971); Magnum Force (1973, with David Soul as a vigilante bike cop); The Enforcer (1976, with Tyne "Lacey" Daly as Harry's new and reluctant partner); Sudden Impact (1983, the weakest of the lot costarring Eastwood's then-partner Sondra Locke) and The Dead Pool (1988, a surprisingly upbeat end to the series).
