Editorial Review:

Lurid thrillers don't get much more shameless than this movie, in which Robert De Niro plays a pathological baseball fan whose obsession is focused on a San Francisco Giants all-star outfielder (Wesley Snipes). While the newly signed baseball star is having trouble getting his favorite uniform number from a competitive teammate (Benicio Del Toro), De Niro is having career troubles at the knife company his father founded, and you can bet that his proximity to high-quality stainless-steel blades will be a factor in the suspenseful plot. Recycling parts of his maniacal roles in Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, and Cape Fear, De Niro takes his idolatry to violent extremes, eliminating any obstacle to Snipes's stardom until the baseball hero is forced to confront his most terrifying devotee. Directed with brutal excess and souped-up style by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide), this manipulative nail-biter pulls all the right strings in predictable fashion, but it does have moments that are effectively intense. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

When the coach of Vince Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time--no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale--a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy--moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

Walt Disney Pictures scored a surprise box-office hit with Invincible, and the movie deserved its good reviews as a fine example of how above-average writing, direction, and casting can turn formulaic material into something special. And make no mistake, this is a formulaic movie, with its real-life story embellished with Rocky-like enthusiasm, and lovingly crafted with the same quality of working-class humanism that made The Rookie a similarly popular Disney hit. This time, the inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale, a down-on-his-luck substitute teacher in Philadelphia (played by Mark Wahlberg in a nicely understated performance) who was 30 years old, out of work, abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976. Going with his gut instinct, new coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) rewards Papale's diligent efforts with a place on the team, and Invincible combines gridiron guts, low-key romance (as Papale meets his future wife-to-be, played by Elizabeth Banks) and blue-collar friendship in an underdog story that moves, with casual charm and abundant appeal, toward a rousing feel-good finish. Making good use of digital visual effects to recreate Philly's now-demolished Veterans Stadium, director Erickson Core (also serving as his own cinematographer) tackles this heartwarming assignment with intelligence and flair, spinning gold from what could have been just another routine sports movie. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Great family fare.......2007-06-22

This is a wonderful film that the entire family can enjoy (without watching a cartoon). It has the further benefit of being based on a real person's life and experience. In some ways it is Dick Vermeil's story as well as Vince Papale's. Both are embarking on long-shot careers. The fact that we know how Vermeil's will turn out provides reassurance that Vince's will turn out well also. A sweet and engaging film about individual aspiration, family, neighborhood, and friendship. Watch it with your kids without any fear of embarrassment. How often can you say that today?

5 out of 5 stars a real good movie.......2007-05-14

this is very serious and true movie. i really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie.......2007-04-11

This movie will really touch your heart. The scenery, the acting, and the music are all on point. What a great story!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the usual sports saga.......2007-04-02

"Invincible" is a cut above the usual "downtrodden young man achieves the impossible" sports saga. It's the true story of a Philadelphia Eagles fan who responds to the coach's publicity stunt of holding tryouts for his beleagured team. No one expects anything to come of it, but Vince proves to be incredibly fast on his feet, and makes the first cut--and the second, and the third, and eventually the team. He's ostracized by regular team members, and even by some of his buddies back in the neighborhood, who fear they'll lose him to the big time. In his first big play, he blows it--but then makes an incredible play in a later game that wins it for the Eagles. My husband says Vince played for 3 years on Philadelphia's special teams.
This movie paints a real life gritty picture of working class Philadelphia, almost like the first Rocky film. Very suitable for kids without being sappy sweet--my 8 year old grandson thought it was great. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A feel good movie.......2007-03-31

This movie was well done, it builds the problem (a depressed era) and a lack of confidence and shows how one man handles that struggle with the help of his friends and family. A must watch and one that I would recommend purchasing. Then do a look up on Wikpedia to learn more about the man.

Description

The 1975 cinema vérité classic Grey Gardens, which captured in remarkable close-up the lives of the eccentric recluses and cousins to Jackie Onassis, Big and Little Edie Beale, in their decrepit East Hampton mansion, has spawned everything from a midnight-movie cult following to a Broadway musical remake an upcoming Hollywood adaptation. Now, Albert and David Maysles have revisited their landmark documentary with a sequel of sorts, culled from hours of never-before-seen footage recently found in the filmmakers' vaults.

2 out of 5 stars Assault on Reason.......2007-06-24

Showing up 30 years after the original, and undoubtedly here to capitalize on the smash Broadway play and upcoming fictional feature film, "The Beales of Grey Gardens" scoops up whatever was left on the editing room floor, puts them together like links of sausage and calls itself a movie. That's fine, they have some decent material here, but still this experiment of filming Jackie O's reclusive, deranged relatives is nothing more than a prehistoric "Osbournes". To its credit it feels much more organic as it is not burdened by MTV style editing or staged feuds with their neighbors. We just sit around and watch crazy people sink further and further into their own messed up world. Of course it is entertaining, but as a movie it doesn't really work. For a comedy it just isn't funny enough and for a tragedy it just isn't sad enough. How can we feel sad for these people, ignorance is bliss, as they say, and Big Edie and Little Edie are both more than stocked up in both departments.

I think a main theme here is taking yourself out of civilized society and entering an alternate reality. My hatred of people is well documented, but I am at least smart enough to surround myself with them for the sake of my own mental health. And so while I admit that I had a lot of fun at their expense I must emphasize the point that I am not judging them. How could I considering that my apartment looks like the Unabomber lives there, and that I eat ice cream out of the carton, and that I sit around prattling off conspiracy theories. Then again, I never danced around in front of my mother singing show tunes. And I certainly never burned a hole in my house and then had a raccoon come and take up residence within it. So like that trip to see the crazy old aunt nobody talks to anymore this trip begins to wear thin about an hour in.

With very few people around to stop their wild-eyed pontifications they just went on believing their own version of the truth. This becomes painfully apparent when Little Edie begins equating alcohol to "orgies" and "exploding livers". Later she rails against private and public property in the same rant, quite obviously not knowing the difference. It is my theory that when men go crazy they direct it outward, but when women go crazy everything is directed inward, and this is a perfect example. Little Edie means and does no harm to anybody else, but you listen to her talk for five minutes and you realize that this is one lost little girl. The film fails because, like Spike lee's "Next Movement", you really can't turn deleted scenes into a movie. They were deleted for a reason, not to mention that it is near impossible to create a narrative structure out of leftovers. **1/2

5 out of 5 stars I adored this movie, absolutely mad about it........2007-06-11

Everyone else has already said how wonderful the "new" footage, how beautiful the scenery, how in-depth the exploration...I agree with them all. I adore this film and am so grateful it has been made available (I would have taken it as raw footage). I just wanted to mention that the subtitles are way off in many, many places. I'm from Long Island, a native speaker of the LI accent, and I've seen Grey Gardens probably around 500 times. I know what they're saying and it is not what is printed in the subtitles much of the time. Perhaps whoever did the subtitles is not a LI native. It's not really a complaint, but if you really want to know what they're saying you just have to listen closely and let your ear guide you, because if you take your info from the subtitles, it sometimes alters the actual meaning of what they're saying. I hope this helps someone--it's my good deed for the day.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the 32 year wait.......2007-06-09

Though I had watched "Grey Gardens" at least 2000 times since 1975, last fall, I went to the Castro Theater in San Francisco to see the new print of it with an audience for the first time since the Bouvier-Beales were introduced to me in '75.

That night, an appearance by Jerry Torre was incentive for me to see "Grey Gardens" on the big screen. I had just purchased the Broadway cast album and the song "Jerry loves the way I do my corn" was repeating in my brain as I waited in the long line to get into the theater.

Over 30 years of viewing, the Maysles film had made the Beales virtual friends of mine. Once upon a time, when I said that "Grey Gardens" was my favorite film, nobody had heard of it.

I did not know that a second feature would follow the interview with the "Marble Fawn".

As Ms. Beale pranced through the yard singing "You Ought to be in Pictures," my heart felt as though I was visiting an old friend.

As true today as it was in 1975, you'll either be fascinated or repelled by "The Beales of Grey Gardens." I now have two favorite films.

One thing is certain: you'll never forget them.

Al, if you're reading this - thank you!

4 out of 5 stars Still making money off of Big Edie & Little Edie?.......2007-05-22

As a great fan of Big Edie & Little Edie I was naturally delighted to see the new footage. However, after reading Lois Wright's book about the 13 months that she actually lived with the Beales' in which she reveals that the Maysles agreed to give them 40% of the profits, but yet they were starving during the Premiere and while it was showing at theaters. The Maysles promised to pay their grocery bill, which they did not, and soon after the grocer cut off their credit. At Big Edie's funeral, Little Edie was upset that they were even there - they were made to stand at the back of the funeral service & denied permission to attend the graveside service. I do not know what the ultimate outcome was & if indeed they honored their agreement to give the Beales their 40%. But, back to "The Beales of Grey Gardens" I was as captivated as much, if not more so, than the first film. I think the footage was more revealing and showed a more unvarnished version of the Beales, which endeared me even more to these two incredible entertaining, intelligent, witty & enchanting ladies.

5 out of 5 stars The Beales revealed.......2007-03-08

The "Beales of Grey Gardens" brings home the story of Big Edie and Little Edie as introduced in the original "Greygardens". It is very helpful to view "Greygardens" first because it provides the background for the more in-depth presentation of their relationship and history.

This story about a day in the life of an independent record store, truly a threatened species, screeches with the sound of teenagers falling apart emotionally every five minutes. The script, which feels like an old guy's idea of how kids talk and think, concerns the young employees of a Delaware music shop faced with imminent extinction. While the ship is sinking, the staff indulge in tantrums, depressions, and run-ins with low self-esteem. There's a lot of noise in this thing, but not a lot is really said. Rory Cochrane has the best part as a secretive guy who loses the store's proceeds one night while gambling, Anthony LaPaglia is the adult boss and unofficial dad to the others, Renée Zellweger plays a promiscuous girl, and Liv Tyler is OK as a lovestruck sweet thing trying to get up the nerve to express her feelings to a fellow employee. --Tom Keogh

A little bit crazy. But over all an excellent movie. I have watched it several times.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Teen Movie.......2007-05-02

Empire Records is one of those movies that never gets "played out". It has a fresh, youthful, captivating flow. Set to great music from a mix of genres. This is definitely not just a music video. It deals with a lot of basic life issues, that are part of growing up and growing old. From the little miss perfect, who secretly pops pills to keep up. And is holding onto a teen fantasy of losing her virginity in romance novel style to her heart throb. The weird girl working through depression and thoughts of suicide. A wanna be thug and miserably bad shoplifter that just needs to belong to something. To the washed up old pop star that tries to pathetically hold onto his youth and career. And a wealth of other colorful characters, that are all trying to find themselves, and where they fit into the world. Empire is a great light hearted movie. It doesn't go overboard with drama, romance, or silliness. But it does have a little bit of all those things.

5 out of 5 stars A Movie to Resist Time!!!.......2007-04-28

Fantastic movie that will last through the ages! I can watch this movie any time of the day or night over and over again, I have actually watched it probably about a hundred times. It never gets old and it's one of those movies that you can just put on just to have something to watch. I guess it is more directed at a younger group of people but it can last through the ages.

Amazon.com essential video

Michael Jordan, the greatest player in the history of team sports, gets an appropriate showcase with Ultimate Jordan, a two-disc set that's the most feature-packed sports DVD to date. It includes five programs previously available on VHS--some of the most spectacular footage is on Come Fly with Me (1989), which covers Jordan's youth, college years, and early NBA career. Michael Jordan's Playground (1991) is, as the title suggests, more fanciful, combining highlight footage with a fictional story line and a music video, while Air Time (1993) takes us into the championship and Dream Team years. The more sobering Above and Beyond (1996) covers the death of Jordan's father, his first retirement, and his baseball endeavors, and His Airness (1999) summarizes his career up through the famous final shot against the Utah Jazz. The numerous extra features collect various clips and highlights, but the best section is "Michael's Great 8," which provides 2.5- to 6-minute segments about significant Jordan games, including his 63 points against Boston in the 1986 playoffs and the 1997 "flu game" against Utah. Ultimate Jordan's release in the fall of 2001 coincided with Jordan's not-unexpected return from his second retirement, making it clear that there's another chapter in the Jordan legacy yet to be written. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Jordan...For 3!...YESSSS!.......2007-05-07

For someone who grew up in the Chicago area during the 90's, pairing this with the Chicago Bulls: The 90's is as good as it gets. Not only does this DVD bring back all of the classic videos we bought as kids back in the day, but also puts together loads of highlights, and of course, the best feature which is the full length games. The only complaint that I have is that three of the games on this are also the same on the Bulls DVD set I mentioned above. Otherwise, if you're a Jordan fan (which unless you're a Knicks or Craig Ehlo fan, you are) you need to pick this up.

Michael Jordan is simply awesome. I love the fact that he emerged as the greatest basketball player of all time. Nonetheless, he had to prove himself over the years. Michael not making the high school team just woke up a sleeping giant. This edition is a must buy!!It includes Michael's greatest games, highlights and comments from Michael's teammates and the other players he tortured during his magnificient 14-year career.

Hungry for a laugh? The BBC serves up more than a few chuckles in this engaging sitcom about imperious chef Gareth Blackstock (Lenny Henry), a stern taskmaster who runs his kitchen with an iron fist, a lightning tongue, and a silver palate. The show combines some of the best elements of episodic drama and zany comedy, generously seasoned with sensual splashes of fine French cuisine. (Picture Julia Child crossed with Fawlty Towers' John Cleese following a script by the creators of thirtysomething and you get the general idea.) Blackstock is a brilliant, egotistical black chef running an all-white kitchen--until, that is, his wife maneuvers him into hiring an old school chum. Challenges mount as the restaurant faces bankruptcy and Blackstock decides to risk everything to buy it. Could fulfilling his dream wind up costing the king of the kitchen his home and savings? Supported by a talented ensemble cast, the dramatic story arc develops gradually enough to keep viewers wanting more, while individual episodes rest on more traditional sitcom gags--like when the new apprentice chef loses a Band-Aid somewhere in the kitchen but can't tell which gourmet dish it landed in. Later, Blackstock, the ultimate perfectionist, devises his most perfect mouthwatering meal and scours the shady underside of England's green and pleasant countryside for the perfect closer... the king of cheeses, an illegal unpasteurized stilton. Gradually the supporting characters are given more room to grow--especially charming young Everton (Roger Griffiths), the bumbling, insecure prep cook. When Blackstock's boorish Jamaican father (Oliver Samuels) browbeats the "serious professional" into abandoning haute cuisine for a night featuring Caribbean food, it's Everton's legendary dumplings that save the day. (Watching him carefully prepare his Guinness punch might be worth the price of the set alone.) Those expecting the surreal hysteria of Monty Python or similar classic British comedies might not care for Chef's subtleties, but those interested in quality television mixed with fine food and sprinkled with a few decent laughs will be more than satisfied by what this show has to offer. --Grant Balfour

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!.......2007-06-25

I AM A BIG FAN OF BRITISH COMEDIES AND THIS SHOW IS ONE OF THE BEST! LENNY HENRY IS AMAZING IN THIS SHOW. IF YOU LOVE GREAT COMEDY THIS IS THE DVD FOR YOU. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!

5 out of 5 stars A very true to life depiction of an actual chef....and it's hilarious..........2007-04-08

This is a masterful comedy, especially the first two seasons. It's probably the only comedy to really ever present a chef as they really are (at least the good ones). The culinary arts are just like any other art forms, and the better the chefs are, the more difficult they can be. It's like working for a great filmmaker, great writer, etc., etc.. Lenny Henry is brilliant as Gareth, the fantastic, yet incredibly tempremental chef. The writing here is first rate, and the best thing about this series is that the lead character is not likeable, yet you enjoy watching him anyway. This is actually a very realistic depiction of what an actual chef would go through. Gareth hardly sleeps, he has little or no social life, he insults his customers as well as his staff, but he knows food, and he's in his kitchen 12-16 hours a day. You can constrast this series with the godawful American sitcom Freddie (with Freddie Prinze, Jr.). He played a chef as well, but in the few episodes that actually made it to air, all he ever did was go to bars and hit on women with his business partner Brian Austin-Green, and spent most of his time in his apartment with his wise cracking grandma and bratty sister. The writers of Freddie didn't do an ounce of research, and it shows. In Chef, they actually did research. It's nice to see a realistic depiction of a chef, and it's still damn funny. The first two seasons are the best in my opinion. The third one isn't as bad, but the first two had better writing, and were shot on film. The third one was shot on video, and Gareth was a little too nice to others in it, like they tried to make the character likeable, which doesn't work. Still, this is still brilliant television.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-04-02

One of the best BBC series; certainly the most enjoyable. Third season lacks a bit of the comedy genius of the first, but the entire series is worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-03-14

Excellent British comedy? Yes. Excellent writing and acting? Yes, most definitely! But for me, these stories and/or the series I LIVED for 14 years!! These shows (along with Anthony Bourdain or Michael Ruhlman writings) are the most accurate description of what it is REALLY like to work a fine dining restaurant. There is little, in my opinion, that is over-exaggerated. It's funny, yet brilliant and real! Lenny Henry was on his game in this, and I am glad he brought these out so we could all enjoy over and again.

5 out of 5 stars Chef! is absolutely delicious.......2007-01-10

I love to watch these over and over. And, it's the entire series--every episode. Each time I watch them, I hear something I missed the time before. Lenny Henry is brilliant. Many of the lines are worth repeating. When arguing with my husband, I often steal Chef's quote: "Your silence is disturbing eloquent". Five stars!

You can say this about D.E.B.S.: director Angela Robinson's 2005 feature isn't very good, but it is surprisingly entertaining. The premise, which bears a passing resemblance to any number of previous films (from Heathers and Clueless to Charlie's Angels and the Austin Powers franchise), involves a secret government agency recruiting young women as spies, based on their smarts, their ability to lie convincingly, and the fact that they look fetching in ultra-miniskirts. Four of the D.E.B.S. are then charged with collaring "criminal mastermind" Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster), who has returned to the States after hatching all manner of nefarious plots overseas. Then comes the twist: Diamond is gay, and one of our heroines, Amy Bradshaw (Sara Foster), unexpectedly finds herself falling in love with her. Out goes the espionage element; in comes the love story, and therein lies the surprise, as this burgeoning lesbian relationship is handled with unexpected sympathy, even tenderness. Sure, the acting, even by veteran grownups like Holland Taylor and Michael Clarke Duncan, is almost uniformly lame, and the script is silly; overall, the film would have to put on considerable weight to even be considered frothy. Still, D.E.B.S. isn't a bad way to kill a couple of hours. DVD bonus features include a making-of featurette and commentary by Robinson and the cast. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-06-15

I have to say that I wasnt expecting a lot from the movie but I ended up loving it! It was laugh out loud funny and always entertaining with good plot. Like others said, its not oscar worthy but it was an hour and a half well spent. I watch it all the time when I get bored and now my friends love it too. Well worth watching; it may not look promising at first but after 10 min. you'll be addicted.

4 out of 5 stars Just plain fun.......2007-05-31

I agree that this movie is not oscar-worthy, but it was a fun way to spend an hour or so as it was funny and entertaining. Isn't that what movies are supposed to do - entertain us? Well, this one does. As long as you don't take this one too seriously, it's worth a bag of popcorn.

4 out of 5 stars D.E.B.S........2007-05-25

A great movie to have fun with. The best satorical comment on lesbian coming out and dating. A film that can make anyone laugh at that first chance meeting. One that can be watched more than once and still laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasently Suprised!.......2007-05-23

Ill admit I completely misjudged this movie...It was greeat! Granted you'll have to have a certain sense of humor (Just as the others said, if you liked Austin Powers or Clueless type movies) to like it. Very entertaining and the pacing was fantastic. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!!

The Farrelly brothers continue their good-natured winning streak with Fever Pitch, a romantic comedy charmed by fate and last-minute improvisation. The movie was originally written with a bittersweet ending, but something unexpected happened (kismet, or perhaps divine intervention?) when the Boston Red Sox scored miraculous victories in the 2004 playoffs and World Series, and Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon were there, in character, to celebrate love and baseball as a pair of amiable lovers who learn to share their lives while accommodating Fallon's life-long passion for the Red Sox. You really have to love baseball to forgive the formulaic romance by veteran Hollywood screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (who also wrote A League of Their Own, and could write this stuff in their sleep), but the codirecting Farrellys make it work, along with the easygoing chemistry of Barrymore and Fallon. The movie bears little resemblance to Nick Hornby's source novel (which was more faithfully adapted as a 1997 British comedy starring Colin Firth), but anyone who enjoyed High Fidelity or About a Boy will recognize Hornby's keen understanding of men and women, and the hazards we all endure when playing the game of love. --Jeff Shannon

Description

According to Red Sox super-fan Ben Wrightman (Jimmy Fallon), finding romance is about as likely as his beloved team winning the World Series. But when Ben scores a beautiful new girlfriend (Drew Barrymore), suddenly anything is possible. Now the two passions in his life have a chance to go all the way... if he doesn't strike out first.

5 out of 5 stars To all Red Sox Fans!.......2007-05-08

If you're a true blue New Englander, you'll love this light romantic comedy. Jimmy Fallon is hilarious in his depiction of an overly zealous Red sox fan witnessing the demise of the "curse of the bambino" and the winning of the world series.

4 out of 5 stars FUNNY ROMANTIC COMEDY WORTH WATCHING.......2007-04-10

Barrymore and Fallon work well together in this sports nut romantic comedy. One of the better ones I've seen in a while. A good DVD transfer and some funny extras make this a good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Funny Movie...just a bit harsh in some ways........2007-03-11

I really like the Red Sox Trivia and memorabilia found in this movie. It was so fun to see so many of my favorite Red Sox Memories on a movie screen. I thought that Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore did a great job. There was a great chemistry bewteen them. That is to say...I was convinced that they were in love. The ending of the movie was great. I liked the drama of watching Lindsay run across Fenway Park just to get back together with Ben before he sells his tickets. I think the best word to use when describing this movie is "cute."

However, I'm just tired of watching movies that make men look like idiots. Clearly, the main focus of this film is the stupidity of men and how they need women to teach them how to act appropriatly. I mean, in many ways, Ben is no more mature than an eight year old. That is an extreme and unfair portrayal of male baseball fans in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Baseball Obsession Becomes a Relationship Hurdle in a Genial Rom-Com.......2007-02-05

At the core of this genial, by-the-numbers 2005 rom-com is a great idea - can a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan find a loving relationship with anything but his season tickets at Fenway Park? The Farrelly Brothers, Bobby and Peter, seem like the ideal choice for the potential comic hi-jinks, but it turns out to be a much softer, more predictable film than I hoped it would be. The plot focuses on Ben, a high school geometry teacher whose lifelong obsession with the Red Sox has obscured other aspects of his life. Through a field trip with a group of his students, he meets Lindsey, a successful executive at a firm that appears to specialize in statistical information. Given that Ben is a man-child and Lindsey has exalted expectations about men that need to be cut down a few pegs, they hit it off, especially after he nurses her through a strenuous bout with food poisoning. But things start to go rather awry when spring training begins. The rest is pretty formulaic until it hits a crisis point just before the Red Sox turn it around and become play-off contenders. Real-life events intrude upon the plot as we know the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series.

Although he is convincing as a baseball fanatic, Jimmy Fallon is a bit too herky-jerky a screen persona to be entirely comfortable as a romantic lead. As Lindsey, Drew Barrymore, however, appears to be maturing into a fine comic actress. At her most idiosyncratic moments, she reminds me a bit of Jean Arthur. The rest of the cast is made up of ensembles of actors representing his and her friends and his Sox-based family in his ticket section at Fenway. Even with welcome faces like Ione Skye (where has she been since ""Say Anything"?) and Marissa Jaret Winokur of Broadway's "Hairspray" as two of Lindsey's friends and even JoBeth Williams as her mother, the characters remain pretty much generic filler. The predictable elements should come as no surprise since Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, the team behind Billy Crystal's generic 1990's comedies, wrote the screenplay. Regardless, there is a certain charm that persists through the whole venture. The 2005 DVD has the usual assortment of extras - insightful though sometimes random commentary by the Farrellys on an alternate track, an eight-minute making-of short produced for the FOX network, two-minute featurettes on the love story angle and the Red Sox's comeback over the Yankees, thirteen deleted scenes of varying interest, a so-so gag reel and the theatrical trailer.

The plot line may sound familiar: Two mismatched cops are assigned as reluctant partners to solve a crime. Culturally they are complete opposites, and they quickly realize they can't stand each other. One (Jackie Chan) believes in doing things by the book. He is a man with integrity and nerves of steel. The other (Chris Tucker) is an amiable rebel who can't stand authority figures. He's a man who has to do everything on his own, much to the displeasure of his superior officer, who in turn thinks this cop is a loose cannon but tolerates him because he gets the job done. Directed by Brett Ratner, Rush Hour doesn't break any new ground in terms of story, stunts, or direction. It rehashes just about every "buddy" movie ever made--in fact, it makes films such as Tango and Cash seem utterly original and clever by comparison. So, why did this uninspired movie make over $120 million at the box office? Was the whole world suffering from temporary insanity? Hardly. The explanation for the success of Rush Hour is quite simple: chemistry. The casting of veteran action maestro Jackie Chan with the charming and often hilarious Chris Tucker was a serendipitous stroke of genius. Fans of Jackie Chan may be slightly disappointed by the lack of action set pieces that emphasize his kung-fu craft. On the other hand, those who know the history of this seasoned Hong Kong actor will be able to appreciate that Rush Hour was the mainstream breakthrough that Chan had deserved for years. Coupled with the charismatic scene-stealer Tucker, Chan gets to flex his comic muscles to great effect. From their first scenes together to the trademark Chan outtakes during the end credits, their ability to play off of one another is a joy to behold, and this mischievous interaction is what saves the film from slipping into the depths of pitiful mediocrity. --Jeremy Storey

4 out of 5 stars Rush Hour is one of best buddy-cop movies.......2007-03-13

I get a kick out of this movie. The way Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker interact and play off each other is so hilarious. Jackie Chan's Hollywood career got a second break with Rush Hour and the plot has more substance than most Jackie Chan movies.

We got James Carter, played by Chris Tucker, who is an LAPD detective with a penchant for dancing Michael Jackson-style while blowing up blocks of buildings. This gets him into trouble with his sergeant who, at the request of the FBI, assigns him to a case where he ends up being a nurse maid to Lee (Chan), a Chinese detective who has just broken up a huge smuggling ring in Hong Kong. The FBI want Carter and Lee to not interfere with the investigation of the kidnapping of the Chinese Consul's daughter, but Lee and Carter do anyway, in their own charismatic manner and triumph where the FBI fail.

The martial arts expertise of Jackie Chan is fantastic and shows that his truly a master in what he does. Chris Tucker does a terrific job of playing the off the wall LAPD officer who trys to keep Chan's character out of the way of an investigation. Chris Tucker is an extremely well disciplined actor, and seems to go very smoothly with the styles of Jackie Chan. Not only is the action part of the movie good, the now common jokes in martial arts movies are all there, including many racial/cultural difference jokes not necessarily making fun of races, but the cultural differences. Rush Hour is nothing to take seriously, but it is fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies!.......2007-03-07

Detective Carter (Chris Tucker) who has the fastest mouth in the L.A. police force has an assignment to track down a Chinese Consular's daughter with the help of Hong Kong detective Lee (Jackie Chan). The Two aren't getting along quite well for Carter thinks everything is his way, for Lee the mission is important but eventually along the way they become friends and must stop the international criminal mastermind behind this.

Phenomenal and entertaining action-comedy that has the right ingredients to make one of 1998's most popular movies! Chan and Tucker make a great team together. The movie has a perfect mix of action, laughs, and stunts from Chan, it's the best work Brett Ratner has done and the sequel is even better.

The DVD has crisp picture and sound with cool extras like audio commentary, isolated score, Deleted scenes, featurette, a short film, the theatrical trailer, DVD-Rom extras and music video by Dru Hill.

While hardcore Trekkers may not find a lot of new material in Star Trek Collective: Borg, newcomers experiencing 16 action-packed, fan-selected episodes of the Federation's greatest villains may have to prepare to be assimilated. All the episodes have been previously released on DVD, but there are new text commentaries on three of the episodes, and the per-disc price is significantly less expensive than the full-season Trek sets. It's a great entry point for novices, or for budget-minded fans.

The episodes are presented in Stardate order, which means starting with Enterprise, the latest series but also the earliest in chronological order. In "Regeneration," an exploration team finds a pair of apparently dead humanoid-mechanical hybrids that turn out to be members of the Borg, a nearly invincible race whose simple goal is to absorb--"assimilate"--every individual organism it encounters into its collective being. Because the Borg has the ability to adapt itself to resist any threat, resistance is futile. Shift ahead to The Next Generation and a visit by the quirky god Q turns out to have deadly implications when, in a pouty mood, he throws the Enterprise into their first encounter with the Borg. That's followed by the classic two-part cliffhanger (bridging seasons 3 and 4) "The Best of Both Worlds," in which Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) is assimilated into the Borg and a frustrated Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) has to make a fateful decision. "I, Borg" attempts to give the Borg a humanized aspect, and the two-parter "Descent" has some interesting developments for Data (Brent Spiner). Skip Deep Space Nine in favor of Voyager, the series in which Captain Janeway's (Kate Mulgrew) ship is stranded far from home in the Delta Quadrant. That happens to be home turf for the Borg, so they had a number of run-ins. The first two-parter (which bridged seasons 3 and 4) is "Scorpion," which introduces the Borg's nemesis, Species 8472. By the time of "Drone," the ship had its first Borg crew member, the sexy Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), but her loyalties are tempted by the Borg Queen (Susanna Thompson) in the double-length "Dark Frontier." In the "Unimatrix Zero" two-parter, which bridged seasons 6 and 7, Seven discovers an idyllic haven for members of the Collective that the Queen is determined to find and destroy. That eventually leads to an ultimate confrontation with the Queen (now played by Alice Krige, repeating her role from Star Trek: First Contact) in the series finale, "Endgame." --David Horiuchi

Product Description

The Borg Fan Collection has the top ten most popular Borg episodes as picked by the fans! Witness all the characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Enterprise and Voyager as they defend their ships, galaxies, and their own kind. For thousands of years the Borg have been spreading throughout the galaxy, conquering, assimilating and thus destroying countless civilizations. Following every encounter, the Borg catalogue each new species with a numerical designation instead of a proper name. The goal of the Borg, in most cases, is to completely assimilate each species by incorporating their knowledge and technology into the unified Borg Collective. One by one, each living being is converted into Borg Drones. In many cases, all that remains of an assimilated civilization is the memory of its unique contributions that now resides only within the accumulated knowledge of the Borg. That and the numerical species designation. Often even the name is lost, forgotten or deleted as irrelevant. Conversely, the species designations give a sense of the long and terrible history of the Borg and the thousands of species they have encountered and absorbed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Star Trek.......2007-05-16

This is a pretty good sample of the Borg on the different Star Trek Shows. I would like to have seen some others included, but it it still a very enjoyable piece of Star Trek entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best Star Trek Collection!.......2007-05-12

This really is a great collection! You can actually have both parts of 'The Best of Both Worlds' (as well as several other great season cliffhangers) on dvd without buying 2 seasons! It would probably be a good idea for them to make a 'Cliffhangers' collection just for that purpose.

Anyway, if you love to hate the borg, I highly recommend buying this set. I won't bore you with episode details (as they're already listed elsewhere), but suffice it to say, these are really good! Once you have this, you just have to assimilate the movie 'First Contact,' to complete the borg collective.

5 out of 5 stars The Borg rules.......2007-04-09

I'm not a Trekkie (I have a couple of friends who are), and there is nothing wrong being one. The fact is, I'm more of a casual fan. I think the "Star Trek" franchise is not bad, and there are some great intriguing ideas explored in the stories, but I could never get that engaged into most of them. Then I saw the film "Star Trek-First Contact", and I was stunned. The Borg is, without a doubt, the most jacked-up antagonist the Federation ever had to face. I also saw a "Voyager" episode involving the Borg (it's on this collection), and I was hooked. Again, I'm still not a total fan. I don't really plan on getting the other collections, but the Borg is SCARY - in an awesome way. I did enough "research" so I was up to snuff on other storylines so I was able to enjoy this more.

For those who don't know, but if you're reading this you probably already do, the original "Star Trek" is not featured because the writers didn't come up with the Borg idea yet. "Deep Space Nine" is also omitted, but the other three shows are present. The episodes are presented in star date order. I'm not going to go into who or what the Borg is - if you're reading this, you already know. Besides, the less said the better, you have to experience it as it plays out.

I don't know too much about "Enterprise" with Scott Bakula, but it seems to be a real good quality show (except I feel it has one of the worst opening theme songs ever). This episode is great though, and it gives a good explanation about the Borg for the unintiated. Next, there are six "TNG" episodes, two of them are two-parters. "Q Who?" is, I believe, the first show to introduce the Borg. Although the Borg's appearance was not fully realized yet, "Q Who?" (scary & suspenseful) and "I Borg" (touching & endearing) are incredible, the best shows from "TNG". The others are good too, but they had a tendency to paint themselves into a corner, and they went on a tad too long.

Next, there are seven episodes of "Voyager". Two of them, "Scorpion" & "Unimatrix Zero", are two-parters; another one, "Dark Frontier", is a two-hour season finale, and "Endgame" is the two-hour series finale. Even though I felt "Voyager" was inferior to "TNG"; "Scorpion" (which introduced the character Seven of Nine) and "Endgame" (which got the actress who played the Borg Queen in the movie to reprise her role) are absolutely amazing. The other episodes are, of course, good, especially "Drone", but like "TNG" two-parters, they painted themselves into a corner (so to speak) and seemed reeeaaal long. However, "Voyager" really defined the Borg. Now, I'm a casual fan, and I loved this. If you're a Trekkie, you should be ashamed of yourselves if you don't own this. The fans have spoken, and they picked winners. Buy it, NOW!

Over the course of 15 hours on four double-sided DVDs, Chicago Bulls: The 1990s documents the Bulls' incredible run of six NBA championships in eight years led by the game's greatest-ever player, Michael Jordan. Like the earlier DVD release Ultimate Jordan, it collects a number of programs originally released on VHS, in this case the yearly highlight videos that summarized each of the six championship seasons, plus a five-minute introduction that covers the franchise starting in the 1960s and ending with its drafting of Jordan.

Where the NBA Dynasty series (the other initial entry is the slightly meatier Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete History) outdoes Ultimate Jordan is in the six playoff games--one for each year--as they were originally broadcast, minus halftime and commercials. Having the nearly complete game (usually running 90-100 minutes, from the TV introductions to post-game interviews) means you can skip straight to John Paxson's clutch basket or what was expected to be the final shot of Jordan's career. Or you can savor each game in its entirety, all the better to appreciate the artistry of Jordan in his three-pointer barrage against Portland or his "flu game" against Utah. You can see other great players too, of course, including Jordan's teammates--Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman--and those opponents unfortunate enough to face the Bulls--Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone, and others. Because these are all NBA Finals games, you won't see Jordan's shot over Craig Ehlo or his 63-point coming-out party against Boston, but the 1990s Chicago Bulls were a team for the ages, and merely having their games--some of them all-time classics--available for home viewing is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars The Best of The Bulls.......2007-01-28

I suggest this to anybody who is interested in the Era that was the early 90's...When Jordan was in his prime dominating the league and winning 6 NBA Titles. I recommend this to anybody who is a fan of basketball. It is a great buy and includes the bulls best games in their entirety.

5 out of 5 stars Everything is there........2006-08-03

I'm an italian fan of NBA. My favourite team is LA Lakers and I thought there would be no such a period like the 80s with Lakers-Celtics finals!
Well maybe there is: it's the 90s with the Bulls domination and MJ show. The DVD collection is complete and the bonus games are well choosen.

3 out of 5 stars Bulls teams were better than this set.......2006-07-05

First of all, each of the 6 Chicago Bulls championship teams were great teams. The DVDs are perfect for lazy evenings or age-group team barbecues, but I do have two complaints:
1) The games are not in fact "complete" or "as it happened" - significant chunks are cut out of the games, especially 1998 game six. Several minutes are skipped. (On the other hand, I really appreciate the lack of commercials during the time-outs.)
2) These may be Jordan's best games of each series (I'm not even sure about that), but they are not the team's defining games. For instance, from the Lakers series I would have preferred game 2, where the Bulls found the answer to Magic Johnson won their first finals game; from the Blazers series, game 6, where Pippen lead the reserves in a great 4th quarter comeback to win the series. On the other hand, the 1993 (Paxson's 3) and 1998 (Jordan on Russell) selections are spot-on.
Nice set but I'm docking two stars for these issues.
