After the drudgery of Sudden Impact, the fourth and worst sequel to Dirty Harry, no one could have expected the fifth to have any signs of life. But The Dead Pool is fairly inspired, even playful--check out a "chase" scene between Clint Eastwood's Harry Callahan character and a remote-controlled toy car wielding a bomb--and it ended the long-running series on an unexpectedly positive note. This time, Callahan investigates a series of murders that appears to be on a "death list," while becoming romantically involved with a television reporter (Patricia Clarkson). Jim Carrey has a small but memorable part as a doped-up rock star, and Liam Neeson is on board, too. Directed by Eastwood surrogate Buddy Van Horn (Any Which Way You Can). --Tom Keogh

Magnum Finale.......2006-12-08
Clint Eastwood has a little pop-culture fun in this somewhat cartoonish Dirty Harry outing. "The Dead Pool" (1988) is a slight improvement over the unpleasantness of "The Enforcer" and "Sudden Impact," but Inspector Harry Callahan no longer resembles the cinematic icon depicted in director Don Siegel's 1971 classic. Still, we get an inventive car chase, a few memorable Clint one-liners, and a stronger-than-average cast (Liam Neeson, Patricia Clarkson, Evan C. Kim, Jim Carrey). Running only 91 minutes, the film moves at a good clip until stumbling at the finish line. It's a ludicrous climax as Harry blows away his final psychopath with a hand-held harpoon gun. Though a commercial success, "The Dead Pool" lacked the box-office firepower of its predecessors and Eastwood wisely bid adieu to his most famous character.
Average Eastwood.......2006-07-13
This is an alright Dirty Harry flick. It is good for at least one viewing if you like Clint as Harry and it also has Liam Neeson, with a short cameo by Jim Carry as a druggie rockstar that is kind of amusing.
Last good Eastwood / Dirty Harry / Clint cop flick of his career (really 3.5 stars on a mormal 4 star scale).......2006-03-28
In Dirty Harry Five, Eastwood is hot
on the trail of movie buff who is pretend-
ing to be Director 'Peter Swan', a schlock-
horror flick producer, running out of ideas.
Evan C.Kim as Al Kwan is the best partner
Dirty Harry has ever had! Patricia Clarkson
is fine here too. Good effort!
Time to retire the role........2006-03-11
I am a big Eastwood fan and like the Dirty Harry series, however, the fifth one should not have been made. Clint is very old and he looks very tired of playing the role. He was in his prime during the 70s! But Dirty Harry in the 80s just doesn't match up right? The plot of the story is that he is investigating a bunch of murders and finds out that he is in this game called the Dead Pool and his name is on the list. Jim Carrey plays a Herion addict which that I can believe. But the over all movie was just plain boring. It seems like they have lighten up the character sine Eastwood is older.
HARRY AND THE MINI-CAR CHASE.......2005-11-02
This fifth and last entry in the Dirty Harry series has some crackling good scenes and an above-average plot, making it one of the best in the series. Clint Eastwood brings his square-jawed hero to life once again, this time paired with a Chinese-American, effectively underplayed by Evan Kim. He also finds himself somewhat enamored with a hot shot tv reporter (the talented Patricia Clarkson) in this case which involves a "dead pool", a list of celebrities who are predicted to die within the year. Harry is not too happy to find he's on the list, which was instigated by a movie crew as a game. Liam Neeson in one of his earlier roles plays the egocentric, deadly director who is one of the game's players and a suspect once several of the list's celebrities meet untimely deaths.
The movie is tightly wound, and you can even spot Jim Carrey in a small role as a drug-addled singer. The movie's highlight is an incredible chase scene between Harry and a deadly bomb-rigged electonically controlled car. It's a great parody of Harry's previous movies and it works well.
THE DEAD POOL let Harry go out in style and it's a fun ride.

Five--count 'em, five--chances to wallow in the shoot-first, ask-questions-later ethos of San Francisco cop Harry Callahan, who became a signature character for actor Clint Eastwood. The first one, Dirty Harry, is the best, a Don Siegel film in which Harry flouts rules about police brutality to capture a serial killer. In Magnum Force he tracks rogue cops and utters his "Do you feel lucky, punk?" speech. In The Enforcer he gets a female partner (future Cagney and Lacy star Tyne Daly). Sudden Impact featured him tracking a female serial killer and offered a new catch phrase: "Go ahead. Make my day." And The Dead Pool, aside from offering a smart little chase involving a radio-controlled model car, brought him face to face with Liam Neeson. You can't ask for much more firepower in one box than this. --Marshall Fine

70s Gold.......2007-06-24
I love films like these.Only have the first two though. Hoping for a new box set in the near future with more features.
Husband loved it!.......2007-05-07
They just don't make cop movies like they used to. My favorite part were the 'making of' films for the first three movies. They were narrated by the guy from Dragnet.
Do yourself a favor -- you may find this set cheaper someplace else on the web. But you should buy it here. This was originally my hubbie's Valentine's Day gift. He didn't get it until a month later because I was trying to be cheap. Two other online vendors couldn't deliver (and getting refunds was a nightmare). I ordered it here and three business days later I had it in hand.
Magnificent "CLINT".......2007-01-10
Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan has style. All 5 movies watched in a sequence are a treat for action fans. Plots are well set & keep you gripped throughout. Never a dull moment. A must buy for action lovers.
Great collection and gift idea.......2007-01-09
This Dirty Harry collection is a great gift idea. I gave it to my husband for Christmas and he loved it!
Dirty Harry does Iraq.......2007-01-09
This was a gift for a soldier in Iraq. He appreciated a touch of home.

Product Description
"Dirty" Harry Callahan was one of the first screen characters to embody contemporary fears about crime--and the uncompromising response to it that much of the audience would liked to have seen. Clint Eastwood's laconic rogue cop became an instant screen icon; his catchphrases ("Do you feel lucky?", "Make my day") were and still are endlessly quoted, and he even inspired a futuristic comic-strip counterpart in the person of Judge Dredd. Made at the time when the real "Zodiac" serial killer was terrorising San Francisco, the original Dirty Harry struck a frighteningly realistic note in 1971: aside from Eastwood, director Don Siegel's taught, pacey direction, Lalo Schifrin's nervy jazz score and Andrew Robinson's cackling psycopath "Scorpio" all make a strong impact. Such was the film's success that it gave rise to no less than four sequels, none of which are its equal but all of which get by on the charisma of Eastwood's anti-hero, even when he's increasingly trapped by the character's one-dimensional persona.
This five-disc box set contains all the "Harry" movies: Dirty Harry (1971); Magnum Force (1973, with David Soul as a vigilante bike cop); The Enforcer (1976, with Tyne "Lacey" Daly as Harry's new and reluctant partner); Sudden Impact (1983, the weakest of the lot costarring Eastwood's then-partner Sondra Locke) and The Dead Pool (1988, a surprisingly upbeat end to the series).
