A high-profile action/exploitation thriller set in the present, The Siege is really a fantasy that extrapolates from major terrorist attacks. Denzel Washington is FBI special agent Hubbard, "Hub" to his friends, whose anti-terrorist task force must track down the terrorist cells responsible for a spate of bombings in New York. His partner is an FBI agent of Arabian extraction (played convincingly by Tony Shalhoub), proving not all Arabs are bad guys--a point the film should be lauded for making again and again. Thrown into the mix is a CIA spy (played almost kittenish at times by Annette Bening), whose ties to the terrorists appear to be at the center of the conflicts. When the bombings escalate out of control, the President institutes martial law, sending in General Devereaux (played with impenetrable countenance by Bruce Willis) with tanks and troops to ferret out the terrorists. Echoes of Japanese-Americans in internment camps ring out as Arabs, including the son of the Arab-American FBI agent, are herded into a stadium. Periodic audio-montages of "man in the street" sentiments anchor the material in the present and show how serious and relevant the material is. But finally what we have is a taut and entertaining popcorn movie, giving itself the humanistic nod when it can. --Jim Gay

Steven Seagal can consider himself lucky if he ever makes a better movie than this one, which was appropriately dubbed "Die Hard on a battleship" when released in 1992. Seagal handles the heroic duties with his usual wooden efficiency, but the movie's greatest assets are a punchy script and the scene-stealing performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. The two play leaders of a terrorist group who take over the venerable battleship USS Missouri during its final commissioned voyage. They're crazed psychotics who seize control of the ship's nuclear arsenal, but they don't know that Seagal--as the ship's cook, no less--is a former Navy hero, lurking in the shadows and waiting to spoil their nefarious scheme. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) helms the action with skillful style, and as the cheesecake stripper who proves handy with a hand grenade, Playboy Playmate-turned-actress Erika Eleniak gives Seagal another reason to strut his macho stuff. Under Siege is hormonal hokum for gun-happy viewers, but as action movies go, this one's a definite guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

Under Seige.......2007-04-10
excellent action movie and the hero Steven Seagal is as always outstanding Keeps you on the edge of your seat.
A Tinge of DIE HARD but Definitely Seagal.......2007-02-07
UNDER SIEGE certainly could be a DIE HARD film if you change the lead character but this film works just fine is one of Seagal's best. Steven Seagal's stoic performance works to his advantage against the over-the-top performances of villains Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. Seagal uses everything but the kitchen sink to save the day aboard the Battleship Missouri. This is a good one.
Definitely Seagal's best movie so far.......2007-02-07
Steven Seagal is finally coming to Scotland, Edinburgh specifically, to play with his band Thunderbox. Although he has a few more chins than he used to, my boyfriend is thinking of going to see him in concert, so what better way to celebrate the fact a major star is coming to Edinburgh, than to watch a movie?
I'm normally not that fussed about Mr Seagal. I own one of his movies (Marked For Death), but I've discovered, since watching this, that I have so much more respect for him when he doesn't have that ponytail. Which just looks silly on a guy that big anyway. I knew I was going to be watching this, as it was "reserved" for watching on the brand new, HD DVD player that now resides in my boyfriend's sitting room. It was my first viewing of a HD DVD and overall, I was very impressed.
Shock horror, you do actually get to see Steven SMILE in this film, which made me start to like him even more. Normally, he's all serious. It did look like he was going to start dancing at one point, which would have left me cringing, but thankfully, he didn't. Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones join him in this movie, including some female nudity from Erika Eleniak, who proves she can handle a gun that looks bigger than her. This is a very stereotypical action movie of the nineties, where terrorists take over whatever it is. In this case, it's a very big naval battleship. Tommy Lee Jones looks like he came straight from the sixties to this point in time. There's not much to the story, but Seagal saves the day, leading everybody along in the process to believe that he's nothing but a lowly cook.
The HD is very impressive, looks great on a 50 inch big screen (some guys have cars - my boyfriend has all his TV stuff and DVDs), the picture has been remastered, and is brighter and sharper than you can possibly imagine. There's no extras on this unfortunately, just a trailer, but some other HDs boast of in movie experiences etc. Shame they couldn't have brought back Steven for a "look back on..." or a commentary, I'm sure it would have been worthwhile.
Definitely the best Seagal movie in my eyes. Get it, watch it!
Under Siege.......2007-01-31
This moive is packed with great actions. It is the one of the best Steven Seagal movie. The storyline may be a bit silly but it is great entertainment.
Best Seagal's movie.......2007-01-28
Seagal plays Casey Ryback - a cook (yup, that's right, a cook) who, by the way, is also a trained Navy SEAL trained in unarmed combat, explosives, weapons usage, tactical weapons etc etc etc. Due to some incident in his past he's working as a cook on board a US warship.
Then the bad guys arrive and hijack the ship. A curious plot, but there you go. Naturally they take out all officers ranking higher than the traitor who lets them in but conveniently don't know that Ryback has skills beyond pie-making.
So begins the carnage, as this now somewhat annoyed Navy SEAL decides to take back the ship. With a little help from Miss July 1989 and a few crew members he finds locked in a room somewhere he not only kills the entire army of bad guys but also manages to take out the Korean submarine that wanted to buy the nuclear missiles on board the ship.
If you like a bit of all-action quasi-comedy with disbelief then just go and buy this movie.

The success of Under Siege made a sequel mandatory according to Hollywood's rules of maximum revenue, and as sequels go, this one's not half bad. Steven Seagal returns as former Navy SEAL and skilled chef Casey Ryback, who's trying to spend quality time with his niece on a cross-country train trip. But as luck and action-movie formulas would have it, the train has been hijacked by a demented genius (Eric Bogosian) who is using the train as a moving platform to seize computerized control of a top-secret U.S. satellite that is capable of causing earthquakes from space. Seagal has to stop the train or the villain (whichever comes first), and the action is fast and furious on its way to a high-speed climax. He's not as wacky as Tommy Lee Jones in the first Under Siege, but Bogosian has got a delirious quality that serves the comic-book plot, and action fans get more than their fill of dazzling stunts and special effects. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Best Seagal's movie.......2007-01-28
Steven Seagal plays Casey Ryback in the sequel to film of 1992. The simple yet slightly unbelievable plot is that some terrorists have hijacked a luxurious train and our using it as a base for their ugly plan.
They have stolen the control codes to a lethal laser weapon satellite system in space that has the capability to wipe out a destination anywhere in the world. If the Americans do not pay up, then the passengers on the train will die and the US Eastern Seaboard will go up in smoke. Little do they know that a certain ex-Navy SEAL is on the train on vacation with his niece and is prepared to fight!
The action scenes are brilliant, right from the beginning. The fight on the side of the cliff, the cocktail bomb scene, and the finale on the helicopter are all brilliant and exciting. There is nothing to the acting, Seagal portays Ryback's tough character as the knowing hero excellently.
R rating is not strong enough.......2007-01-28
I truly enjoyed watching the movie on TV and in the theater, but on the DVD... that's a whole different story. Almost every other word that comes out of "bad guys" mouth is an f... word. Was this really necessary for the plot of the movie? Good thing that I bought this movie used, because after one time watching it, it's going straight in the trash. It's a great action movie with very distasteful dialogs. I wish I knew where I could get PG version of it.
'Nobody beats me in the kitchen!".......2007-01-16
Steven Seagal reprises his role as a one time SEAL team captain, a counter-terrorist expert who had to rely only on his personal skills in order to survive, and protect the hostages... He happens to be on the Grand Continental passenger train traveling from Denver to L.A... Seagal joins the only family he has, a 'cute kid' named Sarah (Katherine Heigl) after her parents died in a plane crash...
Seagal has an electrifying screen presence... Seeing him in action is similar to appreciating modern art...
The train is hijacked by a team of 'ugly men' with guns... Their chief, Travis Dane (Eric Bogosian), is a high-tech mastermind, who fakes his own death in order to gain control of a top-secret nuclear satellite... For this crazy technical genius, technology can be used for beauty or debasement, and 'until you plug it in, you just can't tell.'
Dane's henchman Penn (Everett McGill) is a soldier of fortune freak, whose relationship with his boss resurfaced during Desert Storm...
Morris Chestnut's focus is on humor and breath-taking sequences...
Geoff Murphy's film is incredibly entertaining, combining action, martial arts, and dark sense of humor...
Under Siege 2.......2006-06-15
Saw a part of this movie and it is awesome.Rated R for strong violence and language.Canada:R[Ontario].

In need of some good old-fashioned gore? You'll find it by the bucketload in the low-budget monsterfest Feast, which arrives on DVD in an even bloodier unrated edition. The winning entry in the third season of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's reality series/talent contest Project Greenlight (Wes Craven is also on board as an advisor/producer), Feast is a wall-to-wall splatterthon that operates on an agreeably simple premise: A crew of motley characters is trapped in a remote location (in this case, a desert bar) by ravenous, flesh-eating monsters (here, a quartet of toothy and astoundingly fecund humanoids). The result? Lots of gruesome deaths and plenty of manic action, delivered with kinetic style by first-time feature director John Gulager. Not everything about Feast works--Gulager's drive is thwarted by the unfocused script, which favors smarmy dialogue over substance--but the effects are impressive, given the film's price tag, and the cast is incredibly game for the gory goings-on, with Krista Allen (Entourage), Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Balthazar Getty (Alias), and Gulager's father, veteran actor Clu Gulager, among the stand-outs. The DVD includes a smattering of outtakes and deleted scenes (including an alternate ending); commentary by Gulager, the screenwriters, and two of the film's numerous producers; and a making-of featurette, which Project Greenlight viewers should find interesting solely for producers Chris Moore and Michael Leahy's attitudes towards Gulager (both were a hair's breath away from firing him throughout the production, but here, amusingly suggest unconditional support). -- Paul Gaita

Great B Horror flick.......2007-06-17
This horror film has both the "scarey" and the "humorous" mixed all into one. What I found most funny is the monster's babies mate and then they eat what they have mated with. I just about fell off my chair laughing at this one. It also has a very scarey side and the feeling of being "trapped" in this film. Yes, there is alot of gore, the monsters look very good and the acting was excellent for this B horror flick. I recommend anyone that loves horror movies with a little humor.
Wow, pretty damn good!.......2007-06-12
Funny, gorey as hell with beautiful women and non stop action! Worth the buy, difinetly one to see again.
Underrated horror movie.......2007-05-23
I was pleasantly surprised by "Feast." After seeing a few episodes of "Project Greenlight," I expected this movie to be a mess. But it succeeds as an enthusiastic horror movie despite (or perhaps because of) the severe lack of money and time available, and the constant presence of "Project Greenlight" camera crews. Gulager put together a product that is definitely a B movie, but one that's head and shoulders above much higher-budgeted studio horror fare. It helps that the script, while imperfect, has some great moments, and that the actors are generally at least competent.
One real virtue of "Feast" is that it just keeps moving. At 85 minutes, you don't have time to stop and think about the plot holes too much. It's a rocket on rails from start to finish. One way "Feast" keeps moving is the unique way in which we "meet the meat." Some viewers will hate it. I liked it, myself; but that's purely a matter of taste. The first few minutes are entertaining and get a lot of the exposition out of the way fast.
"Feast" is at least worth a rent by horror fans.

Despite a troubled production history including a switch in directors, budget overruns, and delayed release dates, The Alamo turned out to be a remarkably intelligent mini-epic of corrective historical biography. Dispensing with the grandiose myth-making of previous films on this subject (including John Wayne's gung-ho 1960 version), this well-written film breathes new, credibly dimensional life into the stodgy legends of Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), Jim Bowie (Jason Patric), and Lt. Col. William Travis (Patrick Wilson), who fought with 185 Anglo-"Texican" settlers (some historians claim their numbers were closer to 250) during the bloody 13-day siege by 5,000 Mexican soldiers at the titular San Antonio mission-turned-fortress in 1836. While Gen. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) anguishes over military strategy and reluctantly withholds much-needed support, the Alamo defenders face the unbeatable multitudes commanded by Mexican Gen. Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarria), and the screenplay (on which John Sayles was an early contributor, when Ron Howard was slated to direct) allows the central heroes to reveal a richer, more substantial humanity beneath their mythic reputations. Tackling his biggest production to date, director John Lee Hancock (who previously worked with Quaid on The Rookie) reportedly shot 100 hours of footage, so it's almost miraculous that this 135-minute battle drama is so evenly balanced in telling its oft-told tale. Thornton was deservedly singled out for his fine performance, and Dean Semler's cinematography is Oscar-worthy throughout. Of course, any film about the Alamo necessarily includes speculative history, and this one's no exception, but it's got a ring of truth that previous versions conspicuously lacked. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From the studio that brought you PEARL HARBOR ... Academy Award(R) winner Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE, Best Adapted Screenplay, 1996; BAD SANTA), Dennis Quaid (THE ROOKIE), and Jason Patric (RUSH) team up for the acclaimed action epic about one of the most important events in American history! It's the heroic tale of the 200 brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom defending a small Texas fort for 13 days against an entire army! Commanded by three men -- Lt. Col. William Travis (Patrick Wilson), James Bowie (Patric), and David Crockett (Thornton) -- their against-all-odds courage at the Alamo would forever live on as a rallying cry for liberty and independence!

HAD THE PLEASURE TO MEET BUCK TAYLOR THAT WAS IN THIS MOVIE...AND ALSO A BIG STAR FROM GUNSMOKE...FANTASTIC
Dennis!!!!!!.......2007-05-13
Anything Dennis Quaid will generally grab at least some of my attention. He is fun to look at and there were points in his career that totally plugged me in.
people have expectations.......2007-03-24
The actual events that led to the siege of the Alamo and the establishment of the short-lived country called Texas lie shrouded in the fog of contested legends. Like the Middle East today, two peoples necessarily tell the story of the same land in far different ways. It is often said by Texans today that Mexico is achieving through immigration and fecundity what Santa Ana could not.
Under such circumstances, there is room for a dramatic retelling of one side's story. THE ALAMO does that, and superbly. Jettisoning the attempt to see events from the Mexican point of view - it would have made for more textured history but a failed film - this movie simply tells the story of a heroic stand that many of its heros must have known was doomed from the start.
In the end, Mexican General Santa Ana's Napoleonic ambitions die in an eighteen-minute battle at a place of Sam Houston's choosing.
I work with leaders. Successful leaders usually have far more opportunity to draw on patience and fortitude than heroism. Yet in the heroism of this film *and* in Houston's patience, there are many lessons.
David (or was he Davey?) Crockett wearing his legend lightly. Houston refusing to be drawn in to battle when blood and anger were running hot. A young Lieutenant Coronel being told that 'sometimes it's just the *way* you say things' and discovering that stooping to burn his own hands on a hot cannon ball that someone else could have carried provided the elevation that had eluded him by command.
These are the film's enduring lessons. They can be told even when the history is sketchy, because somewhere, right now, some human being whose knees are shaking is becoming a hero in just this way.
A brilliant film, well shot, cunningly told, sincerely acted. Even Santa Ana would have admitted that much.
Spectacular.......2007-03-17
"The Alamo", I found, was a wonderful movie, even though it did have some historical errors. The acting was superb (to me Patrick Wilson stole the movie with his portrayal of William Barret Travis), and it kept me interested the whole time, so much so that after renting it, I bought a copy for myself from Amazon. Great movie!
Can there be any worse"Alamo"film than this one?.......2006-11-22
I doubt it...Even "The Last Command",a 1950s effort from Republic pictures, and starring Sterling Hayden(yes,Sterling Hayden, the corrupt police captain in the original"Godfather"film)is,overall, more entertaining than this revisionist twaddle..Hey!If you want"realism"(or political correctness)GO READ A BOOK !If you want history rather than entertainment, there's A&E,the History Channel and PBS...If you want a good story, robust performances, good music and award nominated film-making see the John Wyane version...
What is essentially wrong with this version is EVERYTHING...First of all it is revisionist political correctness taken to absurd lengths..Davey Crockett, played by Billy Bob Thornton(the only real reason to see this picture)is less than heroic but is portrayed instead as an opportunist ex-politician who has come to Texas thinking that the fighting is already over, and that he,as an ex-tennessee senator, might be able to renew his career in the new Texas republic..He is surprised that the fighting ISN'T over, and just the least bit annoyed that now he is in a position where his heroic manufactured image is in direct conflict with his real, opportunistic self..Jim Bowie is portrayed as a bigot, and Bill Travis is even more of an opportunist than ole Davey, and an adulterer to boot..Sam Houston ,likewise is not shown to be much more than an alcoholic who happens to be given command of an army that does nothing to help the defenders of the Alamo...
Claiming to give equal time to the other side in this conflict, the producers of this mess portray Santa Anna as a brutal tyrant, much like he has been portrayed in every previous"Alamo"film(indeed, the very BEST portrayal of the mexican general was by Raoul Julia in"13 DAYS TO GLORY",a made for teevee film, which was very well done, given the obvious budget restrictions..Julia's Santa Anna, while still a tyrant, was shown to be a much more complex individual than as portrayed in this film)...
Sure, the saga of the alamo,as history,is not written in strictly hero and villian terms, but the mission of our entertainment industry has been TO ENTERTAIN..teaching a strictly accurate rendering of any historical tale is not the same as providing entertainment,or,for that matter, providing charecters one can either root for or against..
This film wants to have it both ways...It wants to come across as a "great"american epic while at the same time attempting to straddle the fence of political correctness..Crockett,while certainly not the unabashed patriot of the John Wyane classic was also not the almost craven coward that one mexican after-battle account has him being...indeed,save for this one Mexican account, all other surviving firsthand accounts(most notably that of Mrs Dickinson)say that, like most of the other defenders,he fell in battle..This film ,determined to be in conflict with the facts, chose the account written by a mexican army officer(and which was as much a propaganda effort as any subsequent gringo account)to portray a crockett who surrendered and was executed by the victorious mexicans...
The final battle was, admittedly, fought just before dawn, but in terms of the cinema, such an epic scene filmed in near-total darkness(as it has been here)JUST DOES NOT WORK...a bunch of silhouetted figures running about, who are from time to time illuminated by weak light is not my idea of an exciting climax..add to this the god-awful dirge-like flapdoodle music, provided by Carter Burwell, and what you have is one really BAD scene, which is ironic, inasmuchas in every otheralamo film this last battle was the visual highlight...
The filmakers here extend thier storyline beyond the fall of the alamo(and the death of ALL of the main gringo players)and show us the Sam Houston victory over Santa Anna..But Randy Quaid's Houston is a marginal part of the movie, the battle scene is one-sided in the extreme, and the film ends, abruptly, with the defeat of the mexican army..Nothing heroic here either, with all of the mexicans appearing as cowards, and most of the americans looking like blood-thirsty louts...
This film is not entertainment..John Wyane's film is,even if it isn't historically accurate(and even if some of the dialouge is stilted)..What we have, instead,is revisionism that neither entertains nor informs..

BURNT OUT .......2007-01-14
This would be an exciting film for children. For adults: Cheesy script, poor acting and campy stuntwork/camerawork/special effects.
Cheesy yet enjoyable..........2006-11-03
I first saw this movie on the Sci-Fi Channel when they were showing 'marathon' of movies featuring dragons. The subject of review says it all 'Cheesy yet enjoyable'. There are parts that are unintentionally funny: Silas' groomed hair, Princess' attire (lingerie and black pants), Girl who yells "Fire!" when operating the catapult (even though she is the one pulling the device). The movie does has its own charm and it is enjoyable (if you can take it for what it's worth -- Sci-Fi Weekend Movie).
I liked the movie so much that I bought from Amazon. Recommended if you like these kind of movies. =)
Ever seen a made at home movie? Nows your chance! .......2006-03-30
... Now how do you start a review of this kind of movie. Was it a movie? When all of a DOZEN towns people at the gate are waving farewell and sending the would be heros into battle against the (wonderfully computer rendered)dragons doesn't that just somehow seem sad. We six Heros will die so that the dragons won't eat the rest of you! Thats right all 11 of...oh Im sorry didn't see you there, ALL TWELVE of you. I especially like how in this town of twelve+heros there happens to be a traveling deadly martial arts guy, a beautiful girl with a huge crossbow on wheels,(talk about envy) and the robin hood guy, except he's actually from outside the town. So I'm going to stop now before I cry... Yes it was that bad. But as always watch it for the Heck of it and try not to be upset about time lost in a vigilant attempt to make sense out of the dragon storm movie thing..experience thing.
Well-Done Fun!.......2006-01-17
This movie is just a bit of fun! The acting, directing and production values are very good. Maxwell Caulfield makes an excellent reluctant hero and John Rhys Davies injects humor into his villanous role. The medieval setting is more convincing and less glamorous than in many movies I've seen. The script is pretty good, as dragon eggs land like comets on the earth, but we aren't sure at first (and neither are the characters) what they are. Even though the movie is not a bloodfest, it is too scary for children. The dragons do kill people, there is a fair amount of suspense, and the dragons are frightening.
It just doesn't get any worse than this!.......2005-11-28
Oh my, this movie was God-awful. It has the feel throughout of a group of first time actors playing medieval dress-up and dragons for the camera. The special effects consist of computer-generated dragons and an extreme overuse of people's backs getting set on fire... that's pretty much it. The plot is also very weak and so typical. The fighting scenes are horribly choreographed and the acting is so bad that it looks like first time efforts for every actor except for the two kings and Theldag. Picture Ben Stiller with a slight beard, medieval clothes, and a wig. That's the hero in this calamity of a movie. There's also the typical trite and very poor attempt at humor spattered throughout also. This is definitely a low budget title. It's also in 4:3 full screen only. I consider this movie purchase one of the worst I have ever made, but it was cheap. You get what you pay for.

--Jim Gay
Description
When a crowded city bus blows up in Brooklyn and a campaign of terror begins to make it's bloody mark on the streets of New York, it's up to FBI special agent Anthony "Hub" Hubbard (Washington) and U.S. Army General William Devereaux (Willis) to find out who's responsible and put an end to the destruction. Together, they face explosive danger at every turn when they team up towage an all-out war against a ruthless band of terrorists.

Description
On August 22, 1992, 400 Federal agents armed with rifles, choppers and tanks, surrounded the Ruby Ridge, Idaho, cabin of White Supremacist Randy Weaver (Randy Quaid, Independence Day). When Weaver resists a Federal arrest warrant, the U.S. Government declared war on the separatist and his family. Following an 11-day standoff that left his wife (Laura Dern, Wild at Heart) and son (Bradley Pierce, Jumanji) dead, Weaver surrendered and inexplicably was brought to trial on trumped-up murder and conspiracy charges, in this Emmy© nominated docudrama based on the real-life events that shocked a nation. Co-starring Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man) and Diane Ladd (TV's Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital).

Interesting take on what the goverment does to its own people........2007-06-09
It is absolutely amazing how the Clinton administration killed so many innocent people and got away with it. (Including Waco and the Republic of Texans) If you watch Harry's War, a movie that is classified as comedy that was made a few years before Ruby Ridge, it is scary that Ruby Ridge and Waco Massacre were exactly carried out like this comedy. People complain about Iraq and the killing of innocent people and we do it right here in the good old USA! If they want to go after true cults how about the Children of God, The Mormons, The Jehovah's Witness and especially the Muslims.
a great movie.......2007-05-25
a great movie, it could have shown more about mr.weaver being a green and not a hate monger that he wasnt.he was not a member of the aryan nations, he thought they were ok people but it was not for him. but all in all being a production they want it to be more exciting and add there own ideas so i thought it was great just dont buy into all of it talk to randy weaver or write him hes easy to find if you have the net and make your own ideas,
No heroes, no villains, no political correctness. Outstanding........2007-01-01
Despite my revulsion at using such a phrase, the best summation I can give to this work is "Fair And Balanced." Director Rodger Young somehow manages to present a view of the escalating situation in Idaho that is not tainted, slanted, or driven by a politically correct agenda. There are no Bad Guys and no Good Guys in this docudrama. (Although I might stretch a point to name as a "bad guy" Deputy Director Stagg, the supervisory US Marshal who, upon seeing Weaver's name on the front page of the newspaper, demands that the stakes be raised and armed tactical units be brought in. This particular character gets all of 30 seconds' screen time, but I think it's far to say that, if Stagg's ego hadn't been so badly bruised by the thought of Weaver not being arrested for 18 months, that the situation could have stayed under control.)
Working with a script by Lionel Chetwind, which was developed from the book "Every Knee Shall Bow" by Jess Walter, Young does a frankly amazing job of portraying the Weavers' early life together, dropping hints of racism, separatism, and some decidedly unorthodox religious viewpoints along the way --but none of it in a condemning manner. Yes, Vicki and Randy were almost certainly not the sort of folks you'd want to associate with much, but for all the character flaws, NOTHING justifies what their situation came to. In truth, the triumphant scene in which the family finally "discovers" the spot of land that will become their home SHOULD have been the end of the story.
I've always been something of a Laura Dern fan, but my admiration for this actress's talent and professionalism is definitely raised a couple of notches by her portrayal of Vicki. You see in her eyes the fervent belief and complete assurances that, while perhaps misguided, are certainly NOT out to cause trouble or violence --indeed, in the end it is Vicki who asks Randy to stop associating with the skinheads, and he is more than happy to do so, clearly not having been very comfortable with the association all along. The disintegrating lines of communication between Vicki and the rest of her family is especially well performed and is particularly hard to watch. As for Quaid, he manages to deliver the soul of a truly conflicted man, even from behind the exhausted eyes of someone who finds himself the number-one subject of discussion across America when all he truly ever wanted was to be left alone to raise his family. Bradley Pierce puts across an absorbing combination of childhood innocence and hard-hearted bigotry into the role of 14 year-old Sammy Weaver, who, together with Jacob Davis as the younger version of Sammy, turn the character into an audience favorite by the time the Marshals open fire.
It is when the family starts associating with area Neo-Nazis and Aryan Nations members that Kirsten Dunst really starts to shine in the story, absorbing the hateful propaganda and neatly tying it into the religious views in which her mother has diligently raised her. The end result is both compelling and disturbing. Darren Burrows also delivers a first-rate performance as Weaver family friend Kevin Harris, who manages to anchor Weaver to reality even as he lies bleeding and delirious.Another particularly compelling performance is brought to life by Bruce Locke, who plays FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi, who killed Vicki even as she held her baby. Locke injects a sense of anger and naked revenge into the eyes of the sniper --this is a man who has chosen to interpret the already badly-explained Revised Rules of Engagement for himself, and all he can think about is getting even with the evil bastards who killed US Marshal William Degan. Also worth a look is Joe Don Baker as legal living legend Gerry Spence of "Silkwood" notoriety, who manages to switch on some desperately-welcomed humorous moments in the movie's coda. A few points of trivia: the works of Hal Lindsey ("Late Great Planet Earth") are referenced early on in the story as being a catalyst to the shaping of Vicki Weaver's beliefs. Longtime independent journalist J. Orlin Grabbe, one of the first to publicly denounce the FBI as domestic terrorists, appears as an extra in several scenes.
In short, the movie does not flinch: Weaver was a loving dad and devoted husband, but was also a bigot and a petty thief. The Feds framed him, botched the case, and overstepped their authority. There are no excuses. Nobody comes out of this story completely innocent and not a single tenet of Hollywood-style political correctness is observed. No single scene truly emerges as the pivotal "here's where it all went wrong" moment. Gary Graham's performance as a reluctant US Marshal is particularly convincing --here is a law enforcement figure that obviously doesn't want to follow up on this case and would happily let him be, but for the orders he is getting from above. The movie takes us from one sequence of bad decisions to the next, ultimately revealing the real "villain" of the piece to be miscommunication. The Marshals aren't listening to the local residents, Weaver's not listening to his neighbors, Vicki isn't listening to her parents (nor are they listening to her), the press isn't listening to the Marshals, the US Attorney isn't listening to the ATF case agent, and of course the FBI isn't listening to ANYONE. It is only at the end of the action when Bo Gritz (excellently played by Bob Gunton) delivers the horrifying news to an agitated crowd that the "villain" reveals itself --and in one deft move, Gritz defuses the miscommunication, states the simple truth, and even calms down an unruly ready-for-blood mob.
Did the Federal government learn its lesson from the tragedy at Ruby Ridge? Well, of course. You can just imagine the internal memos flying around: "Next time, punch holes in the walls with tanks, flood the place with flammable gas, and then shoot anyone who tries to escape the fire."
Hats off to Hollywood for this effort, particularly to Quaid, Dern, and Young for delivering a product that tells the story without apology and never slants audience sympathies too far to one side or the other. A clear warning trumpet that is very much worth renting or owning, regardless of your religious views, or where you think you fall on the political spectrum.
A total hatchet job on an innocent man attacked by the Feds!.......2006-11-08
Leave it to Hollyweird and the Zionist-
NAZIs to distort all that happens out
there to 'We the People'! This made
for TV garbage is as bad as the 'Man-
hunt in the Dakotas', which smears a
man murdered for his beliefs,e.g., the
Gordon Kahl story. A better video to
see would 'Tragety at Ruby Creek,
which is the correct name of the town
in which Randy Weaver and his late
bride had their cabin in, starring
Lt. Col. James 'Bo' Gritz, until now
unavavilable on amazon.com.
Not all is the truth.......2006-04-10
I live a few miles away from the cabin where this took place by Ruby Creek. I haven't seen this movie yet, suprisingly, but I frequent all of the stores where the Weaver's used to buy their supplies in Elmira and Sandpoint. I know many people who were good friends with these people, and Randy was tricked...hook, line, and sinker. He was pestered by a man who was posing as a white supremecist to convince Randy to sell him a sawed off shot gun. The man who bought the guns was offered clemency to set up Randy. Randy and many others claim that the barrels of the guns were of legal length when he sold them. Also, from all of the people I have spoken to that knew the family, they weren't "white supremecists". They attended 1 meeting. I drive by the "church" where this meeting supposedly happened every day. I don't believe it. There are more federal agents and cops lurking around in this county then you could imagine. I have had several FBI agents come to my business and ask me questions about other people that I have served food to. They have also asked questions about my husband, and we are only ski bums who own a small deli. We don't do ANYTHING illegal. We had a guy try to "set up" a drug deal with my husband, and we have never used an illegal drug once in our lives! I think the government needs to back off a little, and arrest people that are truly dangerous, not people who they are afraid of. The minute the government comes to your home to "disarm you", is the minute you may think you need to start shooting. We are afforded the right to own guns to protect ourselves "from our government". It's in our own constitution. I'm a 29 year old mother of two, and I am certaintly not a racist or fundamentalist. Description
It's not a job. It's an adventure! Steven Seagal comes aboard and comes on strong, combining humor and heroics in a fireball of a movie. The excitement starts when the USS Missouri welcomes aboard musicians and caterers set to provide entertainment during the famed battleship's last voyage. The visitors throw a party, all right. A war party. Led by a rogue CIA operative (JFK's Tommy Lee Jones) and a turncoat officer (Lethal Weapon's Gary Busey), they're really killer-elite commandos out to hijack the ship's nuclear arsenal. They overpower the crew. Except for one man. "I'm just a cook," that man says. But he's a cook with a recipe for action. He's ex-Navy SEAL and highly decorated combat operative Casey Ryback (Seagal). Relying on his slam-bang martial-arts skills and equipped with enough hardware to single-handedly wage World War III, Ryback turns the Missouri's deck and below deck areas into guerilla combat zones. All hands ready, action fans!

excellent, I like this movie
high tension

clean scenes, when treated.......2007-03-25
I would say 90% of the whole movie was cleaned and sharpened for HD. Other 10% of random scenes exhibited alot of grain and snow. Still a major improvement over the DVD release that I have viewed multiple times. Only wished they cleaned the whole movie. You won't miss the untreated scenes, extremely grainy. Otherwise, still a great movie in my opinion.
Under Siege (Steven Seagal).......2006-12-10
What a fantastic revival of an all time ripper yarn. This movie has been one of my favourites and the Blu-ray version has been remastered and digitalized to an unbelievable standard. The picture is astounding,(although you must have a Hi-def panel to appreciate the difference, and you must use the very best HDMI input cables), the sound superb, (use optic cable) and you will be hard put to find a better presentation of a 20 year old movie.
HDD will be hard put to beat this technology.

--Jim Gay

Customer Reviews:
Amazing this came out just 3 years before 9/11.......2007-05-07
-Back when this movie came out a lot of people including myself regarded the events in the movie as being a bit too far fetched. I mean there's no way that some terrorist attacks could put everyone in fear and strip away our civil rights. Sadly that's the case we have here and this movie gets it right on every level. It's as if the writers went into the future and saw what was happening and wrote about it back when they first made this movie. It's a very real story about fictional events that hits very close to home. Not to mention that the terror attack that takes place in the movie happens in New York.
-Director Edward Zwick and writers Lawrence Wright and Menno Meyjes did a great job capturing what happens to a city that has a such a tragedy falls on their lap. They never for a second try to milk or anything, or make anyone out to seem like the bad guy but rather just tell the story from a god's eye view point. Each of the characters believe that they are doing what's right. From the over zealous General who sees nothing wrong with killing a prisoner if he feels it's right for the country, to the FBI agent that tries his best to put an end to the horrible ordeal that has befallen his city. Before 9/11 I didn't pay attention to the movie, I certainly enjoyed it and thought it was good, but after those events I now have a newfound respect for the movie and what it was trying to do. It's not a mere piece of entertainment, but a very powerful story of what happens when fear gets the better of us.
-The power house cast in the movie is without a doubt it's greatest strength. We get A list actors playing regular people trying to make sense of the whole madness of the situation and they pull it off wonderfully. The cast is made up of Denzel Washington, Annette Benning, Bruce Willis, and Tony Shaloub. Washington plays the FBI agent that does his job perfectly and always catches the bad guy. Benning plays Sharon who is a lot more complex than she appears to be. Tony Shaloub is known for his great quirky stuff but in this movie he's as serious as it gets and he does a wonderful job of it. Bruce Willis is also great as the General who is loyal to a fault. All the actors and also the supporting actors all inhabit their roles with great believability and work really well in the movie.
-The only slight problem I have with the movie is that it does get a wee bit too preachy at times. Some the speeches by Washington does get close to being pretentious as hell but it's not too bad. It's not like they have heroic brass backing him up or anything but it does get a bit cheesy at times. The music does get a bit distracting too. Revell does a fantastic job with the score that's for sure, but the more ethnic stuff does get a bit old though. It's like every movie that has a Middle Eastern character in it must have some wailing female vocals and ethnic woodwinds. It gets really old really fast.
-It's really creepy how similar the events in this movie are to how things really are now, but even if you put all that aside what you have is a very solid movie with a great cast and a great message.

if only we could turn back the clock...........2007-04-06
A prophetic movie that I have seen 3 times since September 11, 2001. I was in NYC on 9/11 and volunteered as a nurse at ground zero. I had not yet seen "The Siege, " but ironically, when I walked right up to the wreckage that was the Twin Towers in the cover of darkness with flood lights all around, I remember saying to the person standing next to me: "If it weren't for the smell, I would think this wasn't real. It looks like a movie set." About a year later, my now husband and I saw "The Siege" and I was stunned. Forget White House Memos that were ignored, perhaps our government officials should have occasional field trips to the movies. I only hope that camps detaining Muslim Americans on their home soil and true Martial Law are the parts of the movie that are not prophetic, but only Hollywood. My fingers are crossed...
when plot is overcome.......2007-03-26
the idea behind the story as well as the acting of the three main characters both overcome the actual plot of this movie. It recieved a higher grade then i would have given it because of the acting, and i almost wished that i could have seen it pre 9/11 as well as post 9/11, just to see how i would react differently. last night was the first time i've seen The Seige, and it was surprising. maybe not great, but surprising.
i think what got me the most was how the terrorists didn't care about their lives, just as they don't over in Iraq. as long as the message is clear and the word got out, they will continue doing what they are doing until the message is listened to. in the movie, it was amazing to see Hollywood's depiction of the chaos that would ensue after such an act. especially since this was before a real incident that happened just about the same way.
at parts, i was wishing for less unnecessary plot points, as well as some of them to come together better, but as for a whole, The Seige did it's job.
One of the Effects of Cinematic Media: Reaction.......2007-01-24
Watching the 1998 THE SIEGE in 2007 and then rolling through all the reviews of this film from the time of release to the present is a lesson in the power of the cinema. The obvious initial response was less about the film as a film than about the manner in which the FBI, CIA, Military, Terrorists, and public responded to the unimaginable: shouts of protests about 'glorification of occult terrorists', the Hollywood idea of the impossible happening, and the criticism of the fine cast of actors who steeped into roles 'beyond swallowing' are all here in these reviews.
Now, six years after 9/11 reviewers are taking a different view, though most still find the film pompous and obnoxious. Offensive versus defensive. And after viewing the movie as a movie it is gratifying to know that people feel strongly and are vocal about the depiction of the 'war against terrorism' we continue to lose. Movies that make people think and talk are valuable, and in that light the film is more successful than initially considered.
Yes, there are gaping holes in the script and the plot and the concept, but as a little thriller it maintains our attention throughout and offers some fine moments from actors such as Denzel Washington, Annette Bening, Tony Shalhoub, Bruce Willis, Sami Bouajila, Ahmed Ben Larby, Aasif Mandvi among others. And then there are the panoramas of New York City under siege with the Twin Towers standing mightily in the cityscape... It begs the question: if scriptwriter Lawrence Wright and director Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Courage Under Fire, Glory, Leaving Normal, Legends of the Fall, etc) were thinking along these lines and finding flaws in our intelligence forces, why weren't the leaders in Washington, DC in tune with 'absurd possibilities'? It makes one think - and that is the best thing about this film. Grady Harp, January 07
A "terrorists come to Brooklyn" movie..........2006-12-30
The Siege is basically a "terrorists come to Brooklyn" movie. It stars Denzel Washington as leader of a FBI team investigating terrorist cells in NYC, Annette Bening as a sly and shifty CIA agent. Bruce Willis as the two-star Army general who brings his troops to town, and Tony Shalhoub as Washington's Arab-American partner (nice job, Tony).
So what happens WHEN things start blowing up? The FBI works flat out in stopping the bad guys. There are jurisdictional issues with other agencies. Shadowy folk remain shadowy. There are power plays. People want the ear of the president. And there are victims, heros, and villains. This movie has them all.
The plot had a convincing build-up, but the conclusion was a bit anti-climatic. The final cell was a bit too Hollywood, with everybody showing up at just the right time... and in the unoccupied public baths?
However, this movie is worth viewing for those first 80 minutes.
