Truly quirky, this mock documentary is part musical, part farce, and completely, oddly innocent. This is a one-man-band job for David Byrne (lead singer of the Talking Heads), who writes, stars, and directs, It's ostensibly about the sesquicentennial celebration of a small Texas town, but it's really about strange characters and strange attitudes. Byrne is our guide, driving us around and giving tour information about Texas in an innocuous patter, frequently running into Louis Fyne (John Goodman), a lonely man looking for love. At various times, and with little provocation, the film swoons into a Talking Heads number with preachers and bar patrons belting out tunes. If you make room for it, however, True Stories can surprise and delight with its inventiveness and its unconventional treatment of the residents. A scene in which a construction worker launches into an aria, on a makeshift stage when no one else is around, is but one example of numerous such moments in this bizarre, delightful, and benign film. Any Talking Heads fan who doesn't own it should. --Keith Simanton

Disney continues to "sequelize" its classic features. With smart foresight, the filmmakers choose to go with three snappy short films to comprise this 73-minute feature with the Fairy Godmother granting wishes to various characters. In the opening short, Cinderella must pursue life as queen. Several feathers are ruffled as she brings her down-home ways to the castle (bring the commoners in and open those darn curtains). In the other tales, one of Cinderella's animal pals receives a chance to see the world quite differently, and finally, Anastasia, Cinderella's formerly evil stepsister, finds love with a little help. As with the other sequels, the look of the film helps bridge the distance between the original and the sequel (here over 50 years) and it comes together seamlessly. Little ones from ages 4 to 9 should be entertained while purists may be a bit aghast. --Doug Thomas

cinderella II.......2007-06-28
i have only see this on tv, but do plan to buy it-having numbers 1 and 3 without #2 is really weird. i don't get why people think it's bad, but of course, nothing can top the oraginal; and e veryone is intitled to their own opinions. i personally think that at any age, disney has great movies.
Painfully boring.......2007-06-27
I've watched this movie on Disney Channel a couple of times and it's just an awful movie. Slow, boring, nothing interesting. The only thing I liked was the story where Anastacia falls in love.
The animation is awful, just look at those flowers in the garden. What did they use = crayons and moved them up and down 3 times?
What happened here?!.......2007-02-12
Oh Disney! You make some true jewels, and then there's Cinderella II. Plastic, short- sighted, half-hearted. My friend and I, big Disney fans, were excited to see this, but by the end were incredibly embarrassed that we had watched it, and for the people who made this thing. Dismal stories, so-so animation, and shameless exploitation of a classic with a few poorly-done silly antics scenes to brainwash the kids into liking it. Cinderella's voice sounded stiff and fake, like the actor was trying to hard, not sweet and genuine heart- of- gold like the first.
They should have cut the first two stories and put more effort into developing a decent story out of the third, about Anastasia falling in love. AND, learned from their omission in the first Cinderella and made the Prince a more 3-d character!
Come on Disney! Your adult fans should be celebrating your works, not feeling ashamed of them!
It's good, why is everyone saying it's bad?.......2007-02-11
I have to admit Cinderella 2 is not as good as the first one but good. The one thing about this movie that did anoy me is there isn't really a bad person. Prudence takes place of the stepmother but she really isn't bad just...I can't explain it. She's not bad but she has a very, not bad temper but she's kind of pushy. Gus,Jaq and Cinderella's little friends make a book. It's from Cinderella 2 that Anastaisia starts to be nicer. I've seen Cinderella 3 today it's a bit dissapionting compared to the second one and a bit more dissapointing compared to the first one. Five and a half stars for the first one five stars for the second one and four stars for the third one. It's good, why is everyone saying it's bad? Cinderella 2 is split up into three stories. One story Cinderella is trying to be a princess. In the second one Jaq or Gus I think it was Jaq got to be a human. In the third one Anastaisia fell in love with the baker. I recomend this to ages eleven and under.
Absolutely horrible.......2007-01-14
Many of the Disney sequels are quite tolerable, if not as great as the original shows. Cinderella II, however, does not even deserve to be called a sequel. The idea of a sequel to Cinderella had good potential, but in Cinderella II, a coherent storyline is replaced by three uninteresting tales; it's blaringly obvious that Disney is simply out to make more money.
Even for you die-hard fans, Cinderella II is not worth seeing. Buy something else. (Cinderella III, for instance, actually looks good.)

Abuse Is Not To Be Taken Lightly.......2006-12-18
That's the message here; and this is what can happen if action is not taken. Candace Cameron and Fred Savage leave their days as child stars behind in this 1996 NBC television movie, based on a true story. Stacy Collins (Cameron) is a junior in high school who is shy and uncertain, but when she begins dating handsome senior and star of the school wrestling team, Bobby Tennison (Savage), she feels loved and protected. But behind his charming exterior, Bobby's sweet behavior (leaving her flowers in her locker, giving her gifts, etc.), is a controlling, possessive nature which Stacy tries to dismiss. But he closely monitors her every move and feels threatened if she spends time away from him. Physical violence is commonly introduced. Their friends suspect that things are not as rosy as they seem, but only Stacy's best pal Nicky (Heather McComb) tries to persuade her to end the relationship. Trapped in the feelings of isolation and blaming herself for his inexcusable actions, Stacy lives in fear. Bobby's cousin informs Nicky that he had also mistreated his previous girlfriend (who transferred to to get away from him), and after yet another public fight (during a great school dance, where the nifty 50s is the theme), Stacy, encouraged by Nicky, tells Bobby that it's over. A truly unnerving moment in the hallway after she breaks it off, when he tells her he will never give her up. Through the wired glass of the classroom door his face is like cold, evil granite, his gaze like the black coals of hell. Bobby, under the guise of wanting to stay friends, asks her to come over to his house to give him a haircut. Inevitably, another spat occurs, and, instead of taking her home, he takes her out to a nearby lake where they had their first date. Only Bobby returns to the truck, to the horror of his friend Vince (Eric Balfour), and with blood on his hands. "If I can't have her, no one's gonna," Bobby chillingly states. Stacy is missing; her frantic mother Laura (Michelle Phillips), and friends search for clues, along with the local police; Stacy's ex-boyfriend is strangely calm. Vince, riddled with guilt, makes an anonymous call to the cops, telling them to go look out by the lake. He is eventually brought in for questioning, while Nicky informs Laura of Bobby's abusive tendencies. Vince tells what he knows, and then the investigation moves to Bobby, who finally cracks under the pressure. When Stacy refused to go back to him, he had slit her throat and dumped her body in the lake. Sally Jessy Raphael makes a special appearance as the judge who hands down the life sentence to a stone cold Bobby. She then admonishes all others involved for not speaking up - this is what can happen if you don't.
Those who remember Savage as the wholesome Kevin Arnold on "The Wonder Years" will be surprised at how effective he is - romantic and attractive one minute, angry and obsessive the next. The way Bobby treats his mother, his abusive father's past, and his anger in the wrestling ring are subtle hints of things to come (as is the moment when Stacy takes a shower at Nicky's house - it's pretty obvious that she is being watched). Cameron, who has always excelled at playing kind, naive, gentle characters, does a great job, as always. Heather McComb is the best friend every girl should have, while Michelle Phillips gives just the right amount of balance as the caring but distracted mother who is too busy with work and her own lowlife boyfriend (whom Stacy despises), to realize the dangerous situation her daughter is in.
Hopefully, stories like this will raise more awareness - too many people have looked the other way.
The DVD: This version is slightly different than the one that aired on television. Two Belinda Carlisle songs have been replaced with more current music. The only extras are trailers for direct to video films.
A message that never gets old.......2006-06-22
Candace Cameron and Fred Savage shake off the goody-goody images associated with the roles that brought them teen stardom on Full House and The Wonder Years. Cameron plays Stacy Collins, a normal high school girl full of insecurities who happens to land the class hunk. Savage is Bobby Tennyson, high school wrestler and all-around popular guy. When these two get together, Stacy finally knows what it feels like to be a part of the in-crowd and is so grateful she's willing to look past Bobby's numerous faults.
Their relationship starts off normal enough with Bobby wooing Stacy with flowers and love poems, but he gets progressively more possessive and jealous. Stacy initially thinks it's cute that Bobby is so protective until it gets to the point where he becomes overbearing and irrational. Even when he starts hitting her, she defends him to her friends telling them that you stick by the people you love. "Everything's fine" becomes her mantra even though those closest to her can plainly see that it's not the case.
This relationship closely mirrors the one in which Stacy's mother is involved. Her mother is too absorbed in her own dating situation to understand and acknowledge what's going on with Stacy. Stacy assumes the maternal role, in fact, berating her mother for allowing her boyfriend to treat her badly though she's willing to overlook Bobby's abusive nature. In fact, when her mother confronts her about the abuse, Stacy says "That's your story, not mine." That Stacy's mother backs off at this point is a disgrace and this film strives to point out that in any situation no one should let abuse slide.
This film came out in the early 1990's and was one of those Sunday Night movies aimed at letting teenagers know the ills that will befall them if they're not careful. It's stuck with me all these years because the message is delivered without a scolding undertone, but instead as a reminder of what can go horribly wrong if you let things spiral out of hand. Sally Jessy Raphael has a guest role as the judge in Bobby's trial and she reminds those present who witnessed Stacy's abuse that we have a responsibility to the people who we care about. It's a foolish and dangerous practice to simply shake off abuse with the adage "Love Hurts." It shouldn't.
a powerful made for TV drama.......2006-06-12
I've only seen this movie once on TV back when it first aired like 10 years ago. It was an intriguing drama that drew me in until the credits. It is very well done and the acting is top notch. It was refreshing to see Fred Savage and Candice Cameron in dramatic roles. After watching it I wanted to see it again. When I found out it was coming out on DVD I was really excited. If you haven't seen it I recommend you do if you like dramas. Don't let the made for TV fact scare you. It could have easily been in the theatre in the 80's even though it is not an 80's movies. I'm just saying it is top notch quality. If you can get your hands on a copy of this you won't be disappointed.

The first gymnast to ever score a perfect 10 at the Olympics was Nadia Comaneci. From a small town in Romania, Nadia (Leslie Weiner, in her only feature film role) rose to international stardom. Under the coaching guidance of Bela Karoli, she pushed herself with the will of a champion. This movie does a wonderful job of showing how hard gymnasts must work as well as showing how much they must give up in their personal lives in order to achieve success. After winning three gold medals at the 1976 Olympics, her life spins out of control when Bela is removed as her coach. For the first time in her life she is on her own, she is the object of jealousy from her teammates, and her weight is out of control. She seeks out her former coach and asks for his help. Together they put Nadia back on the winning track. A family film with a lot to offer, Nadia shows in a credible way the highs and lows of celebrity. The gymnastics portions are terrific. A must if there's a budding gymnast or gymnastic enthusiast in your home. Made in 1984 for television. (Ages 5 to adult) --Peggy Maltby-Etra
Description
Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci is profiled in this heart-warming family film. Nadia began training competitively at the age of six, with the now world-famous coach, Bela Karolyi and his wife Marta. At fourteen, she became the first Olympic gymnast to score a perfect 10 and walked away with five gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze at the 1976 Olympics. The petite gymnast from Romania was now an overnight media sensation, inspiring a whole new generation of future Nadias. But, fame came with a high price. As Nadia grew into a young woman she struggled with isolation, weight gain that threatened her career and the fear of exceeding increasingly high standards.
Nadia captures the hard work and determination of a young girl driven to success. The film stars Oscar® nominee Carrie Snodgrass (Diary of A Mad Housewife), Talia Balsam (Without A Trace), two-time Emmy® nominee Conchata Ferrell and Johann Carlo (Quiz Show).

Childhood Memories.......2007-06-27
I love this movie. I have been waiting forever for it to come out on DVD.
Probably my all time favorite movie as a kid!.......2007-06-03
When I was about 8 my mom recorded this off TV, and I used to watch it every day, I had all of it memorized, including the commercials. I started taking gymnsatics after seeing this, and Nadia and Teodora were my idols. They did a pretty good job of getting alot of details.
We loved Nadia!.......2006-08-02
My daughters have grown up watching this video, sometimes every day! Grandma said that if she never had to watch it again it would be fine with her...guess we overdid it. When I hear the music of the competitions I stop what I'm doing to watch that part again. Truly a classic and family favorite.
A Great Movie!.......2005-12-31
I had this tape on VHS a long time ago and lent it to someone who did not return it. I want to purchase it again and wanted to buy one of the used ones - can't believe that someone would have the nerve to try and sell a VHS tape for $199.00 though - is the case solid gold or something??? - shame on you!!
I wish that someone would make a new movie about Nadia's life up to this point - this movie ends with the ('79?) world championships in Texas - her life is so much more exciting after that- with the Karolyis defecting shortly thereafter, her life in Romania under the Ciauczescu regime and her eventual defection to Canada and marriage to Bart Connor.
A must see !! Nadia is Great !!.......2005-04-17
Nadia has been my favorite movie (and her my idol) since the 1st time I saw it at the age of 6. In reference to the other comment about the movie being edited, it's not. I have the original tv broadcast on tape that I recorded, and a copy I bought here on Amazon.com. They are both the same. The VHS version does have Nadia and Teodora doing their friendship routine when they first meet. This movie is an inspiration to anybody, even if they're not in gymnastics. My favorite part of the movie is that they actually show Nadia's uneven bar routine from the Montreal Olympics (in slow motion)so you can see just how perfect it was! This movie is a must have. I just wish it was on DVD. My tape is really getting worn out.

Excellent message, but so-so acting.......2007-06-20
I think Tori Spelling is way better suited for roles like Donna Martin in 90210. She's spunky and hilarious in real life, and so was Donna. I don't think she's good at the dramatic bitch character. Regardless, if you can overlook the iffy acting on her part, the movie is very good. So many girls are teased mercilessly in high school, and just want to belong. Angela, the self-tortured student played by Kellie Martin (who does a much better job acting) decides that she will go to any lengths to be included in the popular crowd, resorting to murder. Despite this being a true story and probably a rare occurrence, the message is clear: kids need to be nicer to each other and just let people be who they are. Cliques and stereotypes tear people down and make school years miserable. Tweens and teens should see this movie.
Ra Ra Ra... M.U.R.D.E.R spells murder..........2007-01-23
This story is about being popular in school and being in the IT club. Both Tori Spelling and Kellie Martin do a fantastic job in this movie. I remember high school and the in-crowd and wanting to be in it. This movie brings you back to that time and makes you wonder. Some people are willing to do anything to become popular, and in this movie... murder may be the key:(
Tragic Permanent Solution to a Temporary Problem.......2006-11-21
I remember reading Randall Sullivan's 1985 article which served as the basis for this 1994 TV drama.
Interestingly, I was close to quite a few people who were threatened with knives during my pre-and early teen years, and the year before the real-life murder depicted in this story took place, survived a near-stabbing at the hands of two girls in my unsupervised science class, who thought it was a lark to play with the rusty knife the science teacher used to cut minerals, and aim it at the necks of unsuspecting classmates. While my would-be assailants were apprehended quickly, and did not return to that school after that year, this is a story about a teenage girl who was able to hide from authorities for six months after committing a fatal stabbing.
Based on the 1984 murder of a beautiful, dark-haired, olive-skinned cheerleader named Kirsten Costas by a less-affluent blonde classmate named Bernadette Protti, the film stars Kellie Martin as Angela Del Vecchio, the youngest daughter of a pious, lower-middle-class family as its "Bernadette".
A kind, sweet-tempered, introspective girl, who recently transfered from a Catholic school, Angela suffers from low self-esteem. Spurred by the school Principal's (Terry O'Quinn's) speech on "being the best", given an assembly at the beginning of the year, Angela sets her sights on joining the elite social service group, the Meadowlarks (or just Larks), becoming the school yearbook editor, becoming a cheerleader, and getting the Queen Bee student who embodies all that she desires to be to incorporate her into her social circle.
Tori Spelling plays Stacy Lockwood, the Golden Girl, who unwittingly and unfortunately becomes the object of Angela's admiration and envy.
In reality, the victim and perpetrator had very little contact with each other, which is one major innaccuracy of the film, although Stacy did slight her killer-to-be about her skiing attire.
The incident where Stacy illicitly reads another girl's diary was also portrayed inaccurately. It was mentioned by an acquaintance of the victim in Sullivan's article. But presumably, that incident and many others in the film were staged that way to give insight, if not into the victim's character, than definitely insight into the way she was perceived by the girl who would eventually take her life.
Valerie Harper was great as Angela's kind, religious mother, who is supportive of her daughter, but perhaps not fully aware of how devastating the failure to reach certain goals, and the rejection of certain peer group members will really be for her.
Marley Shelton plays Jamie, a friend of Angela's who joins in Stacy's mocking of the punk rocker girl (Kathryn Morris)--later a prime suspect in Stacy's slaying--only because she was afraid of Stacy. Margaret Langslide is Angela's other best friend, Jill.
The film exaggerates the trendiness of the elite girls to a fault, depicting them wearing obscenely long strands of pearls, but does not exaggerate their clannishness and exclusivity.
We see how Stacy makes more of an impression on the School Principal than Angela when both of the young office workers tell him they are going to try out for cheerleading, and we see how Stacy gets away with flouting certain school rules.
Words of wisdom from her priest(Eugene Roche) and her sister Theresa(Christa Miller) do little to console her as she fails to reach most of her goals.
Angela does become a Lark, and a candystriper. I have observed how teens who work as candystripers are often resentful towards peer group members who don't have that responsibility, perceiving them as people who don't take life seriously enough whether it's true or not.
Within a few year's time and with a little more maturity and hindsight, the real killer may have come to realize that the object of her fixation had no real obligation to pay her any attention or to justify her life to her if she didn't want to, and she may ultimately have come to realize that a relationship with her wasn't really all that important.
Among the things teens should be made to realize is that in most cases, their peer group members are no more responsible for the success of failure of their families' financial situation than anyone else their age, and to try to make that less of an issue. But Santa Mira (in real life, Orinda, California) is a competitive and goal-oriented community, where it is easy for anyone that age to lose sight of that fact.
Shortly after the end of that school year, when Stacy wins a place on the cheerleading squad and Angela doesn't, and Angela's desperation for acceptance by the "In Crowd" reaches an all-time high, she places a call to Stacy's mother, identifying herself only as a member of the Larks, and inviting her to a dinner on behalf of the Larks when no such event is to take place, in order to have time alone with Stacy to try to befriend her. Angela illegally takes the family car out and picks up a reluctant Stacy from her family home.
True to Bernadette Protti's actual testimony, Stacy is enraged when she learns there is no dinner for the Larks, and refuses to go to a party with Angela. They drive into a church parking lot where Stacy begins to smoke pot, and Stacy denounces Angela when she refuses to do the same.
Stacy hurries over to a nearby residence to ask a couple for a ride home, explaining the precarious situation with her friend in the shadows.
Angela tails the car as Stacy is driven home by someone else, and her mind process--in which she fears what Stacy will tell everyone the following day--is revealed to the audience.
In hindsight, one would say it is better to be slighted for being weird for a brief time than to have the world call you a murderer for the rest of your life.Angela fatally stabs Stacy as she stands at the front door of a residence, and the heartbreak of the community is deeply felt.
For nearly six months, the wrong girl is accused, although in reality there were two girls accused, and one did not return to that school the following year.
But using descriptions from witnesses, and psychological profiling, FBI agents, led by James Avery, find the killer, and the community is forced to come to terms with some painful truths about itself in Bernadette's church, and in the trial that follows.
The class with which the victim and perpetrator would have graduated just celebrated its 20th year reunion. Surely those marred by this tragedy have a different perspective on it now that many are undoubtably parents themselves, and while the victim could have been a nicer person, she might have at least had a chance to live and outgrow that phase of her life.
The killer was released from prison on June 10, 1992 despite the objections of the victim's parents (who moved to Hawaii), and can never return to Orinda as a condition of her release.
About the only positive aspect of all this is that the real-life social service group to which both girls belonged became more inclusive, and at too great a cost, many of the young who were affected by this tragedy began to redefine their values.
High School=ugly!.......2006-10-26
How many people went through this in High School? The need to be popular, the mean girl who everyone is scared of and in awe of at the same time, and adults involved who think that winning is everything. This story is so real. As a teacher, I would like to create a curriculum around itto help others learn how to think for themselves and how to develop self worth. The casting was perfect. Tori played a good heifer and Kellie has pathetic down pact.
If you like Lifetime TV's movies, you'll like this one too.......2006-05-13
Kellie Martin plays unpopular high schooler Angela Delveccio, who longs to be part of the "in" crowd. She joins as many activities as she can, including The Larks, which is an afterschool service club. Many of the popular girls are Larks, including the nasty Stacy Lockwood (Tori Spelling) who delights in humiliating the lone goth chick at school.
One night, Stacy and Angela get into a fight and Anglea blurts out an embarassing litany of reasons why she's so obsessed with Stacy. Unsurprisingly, Stacy is creeped out and mocks Angela, saying she's going to tell everyone at school about how weird Angela is. The idea of public humiliation pushes Angela over the edge and she stabs Stacy to death. The last part of the movie deals with Angela trying to keep her crime a secret from the police while the poor goth chick gets blamed by students for Stacy's death.
I saw this on Lifetime a couple years ago and have been waiting for it to be released on DVD! Kellie really nails the character of the desperate, plain-jane Angela and Tori is perfect as the rich bitch Stacy.

"Memorable."
- The Los Angeles Times
Oscar® nominee James Earl Jones stars as controversial pastor Vernon Johns, one of the earliest voices of civil rights. In 1948, Johns served as the outspoken spiritual leader of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Incensed at the racial injustice that pervaded the South, he was determined to fight for equality for all African Americans.
His refusal to accept segregation incited anger amongst local law enforcement and caused his family to fear for their lives. Johns held strong to his beliefs and encouraged his congregation to join him. But, the church council deemed him a troublemaker and he was voted out as pastor
only to be replaced by future civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr.

Customer Reviews:
A quirky but fun film.......2007-05-09
I first saw this film on cable back in the early 1990's and taped it and it's one of those films that I watch from time to time over the years.
It helps to be a fan of the Talking Heads as it's essentially a T.H. film due to the fact that their music is featured within it and they are featured in a video montage of various "commercials" in the middle of it and David Burns plays the lead.
Based on a virtual town in Texas named Virgil and it's celebration of specialness, that is, showcasing one's unique talents in this small community, the film takes us through the days leading to the parade and show that is held in a field at the end of the week. We see various quirky characters like Lewis Fine, a large panda shaped guy who is basically a nice guy at heart but really wants a wife and spends his time in the film trying to get one. Lewis is superbly played by John Goodman and by the end, ends up marrying the laziest woman in the town, a well to do gal played by Swoozie Kurtz. She spends her days in bed eating, watching TV, reading and what not and she never lifts a fork but has a machine turn her pages, feed her etc - that's how lazy she is.
The match making is done through mystical powers of prayer by an African American man in a modest little house with his family who does a ritual in a special room he created for such a purpose and it's that and a chance viewing of Lewis singing at the show from the lazy woman that sparks the relationship and marriage of the two.
What I love about this film is it's offbeat characters during the mid 80's when that part of Texas is booming as people move down there for the semi conductor industry that sprang up down in those parts. I love how it portrays some of the characters, the mayor, Earl Culver, played by the late Spalding Gray, was almost evangelical in his zest for things such as the semi conductor industry, he's rich, the mayor and the emcee of the talent show and seems somewhat at odds with his family as they are presented in a stiff fashion.
There is the lying girl, who works at the semi conductor plant who is always telling tall tales of she doing this and that and people listen to her sceptically. Then there is a scene at a Fundimentalist church where the preacher is discussing through a song about things he fears in the song, "Puzzling Evidence".
All in all, a cute, quirky film that is well worth a viewing, or more.
True Stories-David Byrne.......2007-01-15
I love this movie, and David Byrne is great in this role, "poking" fun in his own way. Even the music that was written and used for the movie was perfect. I was elated that this movie is still available to purchase. It's a different sense of humor that some people may not enjoy, but if you can see it before you buy it, you'll know what I mean. (Gotta love John Goodman as "Louis the Dancing Bear", he was the right guy for that role).
Not the widescreen version of an amazing film. Dvd -* Film - *****.......2006-12-29
Film - 5 stars
Dvd - 1 star
I am choosing to leave the review of the film itself to others. This review focuses on the mediocre dvd issue by Warner.
I was quite surprised and dissapointed that Warner Brothers chose to release this dvd only in a full screen 'pan-and-scan' version, with absolutely no extras. I have seen the original wide-screen version of the film, at an art-house theatre in San Francisco - the best way to appreciate this film is to be lucky enough to see it on the big screen. Byrne used many artistically-framed wide-screen still compositions to set the tone throughout the film, which are broken up into 'pan-and-scan' segments to fit the tv screen on this version. It is not unlike trying to watch a Kubrick film on cable or video - it doesn't really capture the essence of the original film. The video quality on this dvd is not up really to current dvd standards. Also, having seen a short documentary about the making of this film, many years ago, and the photography book that was made to accompany the film, I know there is worthy material that could have been included as extras. Warner chose a no-frills dvd release.
This is such an under appreciated film, and fans and new viewers deserve a far better treatment of it on dvd. Having viewed it, I chose not to purchase this full-screen dvd until a superior version is made available, and urge others to consider this before purchasing.
Funny Characters.......2006-08-18
This movie cracked me up. The characters involved are all hilarious. The plot is bizarre. The movie was made in the mid 1980's, but it seems very conscious of everything that made the '80s weird and laughable. Extremely enjoyable. And it has John Goodman.
Close to Home!.......2006-05-31
I live in Collin County, Texas. Yep, the setting for most of this movie. Although the towns in the story are all grown and established, civilization continues to expand outward from Dallas, so new towns experience similar issues to "Virgil". David Byrne put his finger squarely on the issue of urban sprawl and suburban development in the most excellent location to showcase it all, and it continues to this day. David, please come back and do a sequel!

Katie Liner (Kellie Martin) is a teenaged girl with a bright future who is swept off her feet by an attractive, but dubious young man, Jimmy Pettit (Ivan Sergei). The two soon marry and live a storybook life on the outside. But, on the inside they live with a terrible secret - he's physically abusive and she's too afraid to confide in anyone, especially her domineering father (Kevin Dobson), a police detective. When their son is born, the beatings increase in frequency due to Jimmy's jealousy over the baby. Yet, each time he apologizes and promises it will never happen again. Upon the impending birth of their second child, Katie realizes the situation will only get worse and makes an earnest attempt to leave her husband. When he threatens to kill her, she turns the tables and murders him in self defense. Faced with a life sentence, will a jury believe Katie's story and find her not guilty?
Customer Reviews:
If Someone Had Known (True Stories Collection).......2007-04-12
This is a very good movie. It arrived quickly and in excellent condition. I recommend this movie to those who, like myself, enjoy true stories.
A powerful, gripping tragedy.......2005-12-08
A pampered daughter of a police chief (Kellie Martin) finds romance with an attractive, polite young man who seems to give her a wonderful home and child - but beneath their perfect surface lies abuse, and when Jimmy gets more violent as time goes on, Katie finds herself with no future at all. Part of the 'True Stories Collection', If Someone Had Known is a powerful, gripping tragedy. Keith is an oversized child unready to become a father even though he's married to Kim, who has always longed for children and is determined to adopt. When baby Brittany arrives in their lives Keith finds not only his carefree ways challenged, but a newfound love for his new daughter - a love shaken by the death of his wife from cancer, and by a court system determined to take away his baby before the adoption is complete. Teri Polo provides a gripping, believable protagonist as a young woman determined to have a child, and Andrew McCarthy as Keith is the perfect vision of a young father unprepared for the challenges of parenthood.
educational film.......2005-07-31
I remember seeing this on tv about 10 years ago. It was well written and Kellie Martin was perfect for the role of the people pleasing young girl. It was based on a true story of a girl who marries young and winds up being physically and verbally abused by her spouse. It is a very violent movie. I don't think anyone under 13 should watch it, but it is so realistic. Abuse can happen to anyone, even a policeman's daughter. The way to help prevent abuse is to realize that it can happen to anyone and to pay attention to the warning signs. I think parents should watch this movie with their kids once they start dating. My thanks to Kellie Martin who is so passionate about doing movies that are able to impact lives for the better. I am glad she is so wise and caring, she really has made a difference in my life.
P.S. For Kellie Martin fans...I just found out that Life Goes On will be released on dvd in the summer of 2006! It's about time!!!!!! I hope they will eventually release all four seasons of LGO, the most wonderful tv show ever.
